  1. All right.

  2. Good morning, everybody.

  3. We'll go ahead and get started here this morning.

  4. In our Sunday school hour, we're going to start in a new series.

  5. And I would tell you who we're going to talk about,

  6. but we're basically going to talk about people in Scripture that had no name.

  7. No name that was mentioned in the impact that they have.

  8. Because, you know, sometimes we think about all those big names,

  9. you might say in Scripture.

  10. You know, when you think about names in Scripture,

  11. what are some of the names that jump out to you?

  12. Moses.

  13. What's that?

  14. Abraham.

  15. Paul.

  16. I mean, you've got a lot that really stand out.

  17. But, you know, the reality is, is God speaks a lot about those that were not given their name,

  18. but made a difference.

  19. I think it's important to realize that you don't have to have a big name to make a difference for God.

  20. And as we're going to look here this morning and talk a little bit about this,

  21. let's go ahead and open with a word of prayer,

  22. and then we'll get into the lesson here this morning.

  23. So, Heavenly Father, if we just come before you today, Lord,

  24. we just thank you for the day, for the opportunity.

  25. Pray for those who are ill and the others that didn't feel safe traveling, Lord.

  26. Pray just that this would be a blessing this morning as they listen online.

  27. Lord, just thank you for what you've given to us, Lord.

  28. Help us to be mindful that a life lived for you is the most important.

  29. And, Lord, we just give you all the praise and glory here today.

  30. In Jesus' name, amen.

  31. You know, as we begin looking here at a name,

  32. because, you know, we talk about, you know,

  33. the importance of a name in Scripture is also there.

  34. You know, you think about the name of Jesus.

  35. You know, we hear a few weeks ago on Christmas,

  36. we talked about the name of Jesus and what it means,

  37. a name above all other names.

  38. But, you know, Jesus also makes mention in his word about those who had no name given.

  39. It's not that they didn't have a name,

  40. because all of them have a name.

  41. You know, we all are given a name.

  42. It's that name itself is a reality because our name identifies us through our life and even beyond.

  43. You know, none of us.

  44. The funny thing is, is none of you get to choose your name.

  45. Not normally anyways.

  46. You know, nowadays you can legally change your name and you do things.

  47. But, you know, but normally speaking, you get your name from your parents when you're born.

  48. It's a name that you have and sometimes people don't like their name.

  49. And other times, you know, they wish they had a different name or other things.

  50. But the reality is you don't get to choose our name.

  51. But we do choose what we do every day and what kind of name that we have.

  52. You might not be able to choose your name,

  53. but you definitely choose what is associated with your name.

  54. What's associated with those things?

  55. Because when people hear our name, what do they think about?

  56. You know, when somebody hears your name in a conversation, what comes to mind?

  57. That could be a good question to ask ourselves.

  58. Because what it is, it represents what others perceive or understand about us.

  59. In our name, the reputation that is built behind our name is important and it has value.

  60. You know, consider, look over to Proverbs chapter 22 for a moment.

    Proverbs 22 chapter mention

  61. Proverbs 22 in verse 1.

  62. The Word of God tells us here something very important.

  63. Here in Proverbs 22 in verse 1.

  64. It says, a good name is rather to be chosen than great riches and loving favor rather than silver and gold.

  65. You know, a good name is rather to be chosen than great riches.

  66. You know, that verse, we could spend some time just unpacking what's in there.

  67. But the reality is, is you choose.

  68. You have some choices that impact the reputation associated with your name.

  69. Those things are clear.

  70. You know, Ecclesiastes 7 says a good name is better than precious ointment.

  71. You know, Proverbs 10, 7 says, the memory of the jest is blessed, but the name of the wicked shall rot.

  72. You know, the Bible goes on.

  73. There's many places in reference it speaks about your name and what it's talking about.

  74. Is it just how you sign something, you know, or what the bank says ownership of something is?

  75. When it's talking about a name, it has that reputation of what people think about when it's associated.

  76. What comes with your name?

  77. You know, because your name doesn't mean near as much as what the reputation is.

  78. You know, really, Shakespeare spoke to this fact about what you call something when he said,

  79. a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.

  80. In other words, a rose, you could change its name to whatever you want to change it to,

  81. but it's not going to change what it is.

  82. The same with our name.

  83. What your name is isn't as important as the reputation and what's attached to it.

  84. The things attached to your name.

  85. No matter your name, it's secondary to the testimony that you have.

  86. And we're going to look here, because this is the case with many of the characters here in Scripture,

  87. that we don't know their names, but God, for some reason, has withheld their names from his record.

  88. But the lessons they taught in their life are still living and instructing us today.

  89. You know, the choices they make, you know.

  90. So consider what Hebrews 11, 4 says.

  91. Speaking of Abel, he says,

  92. In being dead, yet speaketh.

  93. You know, here's Abel, one of the first people on the earth that says,

  94. Though he's dead, he still speaks.

  95. The reputation, the things said about him, continue even today.

  96. Many people know your name, or perhaps just a few,

  97. but anything from your life will continue to speak long after your name is etched on a tombstone.

  98. You know, you think about, we consider a lot of those from the past and what they have associated with them.

  99. You know, think about the names that we have.

  100. I mean, you have names and even history of our nation.

  101. You know, when you mention the name of Abraham Lincoln, is there things associated with him?

  102. I mean, he's dead and gone, but there's still things that speak about his life.

  103. Or George Washington, or you could have a name, a number of, infinite number of people, you might say,

  104. whose name still has an impact after it's on a tombstone.

  105. Now, we need to realize sometimes that's a good name and sometimes it's a bad name.

  106. You know, because both happen, don't they?

  107. But we're going to look here at these ideas of a name,

  108. because the first unnamed individual we're going to consider here is just a boy, just a lad, the Bible calls him.

  109. His name's not given to us, but what he did, his generosity touched the lives of thousands of people.

  110. Because we're going to talk about a boy who brought a lunch.

  111. You know?

  112. You know, and we don't know, you know, whether his mom made the lunch, or you don't know a lot.

  113. We don't, we're not told anything about the lunch.

  114. You know?

  115. Maybe you remember in school, how many packed the lunch to school?

  116. You know?

  117. I mean, I think we can all do it.

  118. You know, you remember you have a lunchbox or a bag, and your mom would write your name on it.

  119. You know, to make sure it was identified as yours, you know?

  120. And you had that name associated with that lunch.

  121. And so nobody else would be mistaken about whose lunch it is.

  122. But, you know, we understand the importance of a name.

  123. But this lad here, even though he's not named, made a difference.

  124. Because this lad here in John chapter 6 was carrying his five loaves and two small fishes, you know?

    John 6 chapter mention

  125. And we understand that he was probably carrying it in something that he had brought with him.

  126. And God used this unnamed boy to display a miraculous power associated.

  127. Because this young man, this event here, is one of the few recorded in all four Gospels.

  128. You know?

  129. That's kind of like making the highlight reel, you know?

  130. It's like when you're mentioned in all of them.

  131. You know, here's this man with no name, this young man with no name that's mentioned in all of them.

  132. And the multitudes went home that day full and satisfied, never even knowing the boy's name.

  133. I mean, there's nothing about his name that we know, but there's much that we can talk about his character.

  134. Because let's take a look here this morning in John chapter 6, here this morning.

    John 6 chapter mention

  135. Because as we look here in John chapter 6, we'll pick up here in verse 1.

    John 6 chapter mention

  136. It says,

  137. You know, consider here as Jesus puts this, and we find something here about this little boy.

  138. Anyway, his character, the boy's character stands out because Scripture doesn't record anything about this boy

  139. other than the fact that he was there and he had a lunch.

  140. I mean, that's not a whole lot of detail about somebody.

  141. You know?

  142. When you say you don't even know their name, but all you know is they had a lunch.

  143. That's what they brought.

  144. They're known for what they brought.

  145. You know?

  146. Now, when it comes to a potluck, sometimes that's good.

  147. You know?

  148. Some people make things, everybody wants to know who made it, you know?

  149. And then they can pick that out.

  150. But, you know, we see here he's looked here at, and he has a lunch.

  151. But we're going to see something.

  152. What he did here has something to do with his character.

  153. Because we see the boy's character on display.

  154. Because the choices he made reveal his character.

  155. Because we see first thing that we find about his character that I think we can learn from

  156. is that he had a right preparation.

  157. He was prepared.

  158. You know?

  159. He came with what he knew he was going to need, you know?

  160. That's the reason we, you know, he was a young lad.

  161. I mean, that's one of those things you know he wasn't going to leave home without food.

  162. If you've been around young boys, I guarantee you, they don't want to get very far from food.

  163. You know?

  164. That's just kind of a natural thing, isn't it?

  165. You know?

  166. They want to stay close to where the food is.

  167. But he brings these five barley loaves and two small fishes.

  168. And 5,000 men, plus the women and children, were sitting on that hillside for a good portion of the day.

  169. And only one person still has food left.

  170. You know, that's interesting.

  171. Because I want you to understand what's going on here.

  172. Because this one little boy in this entire crowd had a meal.

  173. Now, I think we'll find there's a reason for that as you read through the Scripture.

  174. God always answers the question of why these things are so.

  175. And I think it was pretty logical why other people didn't have a meal left.

  176. You know, when you read the account, you'll find those details.

  177. But often we look forward to those moments that are kind of performance moments in life.

  178. But there's been very little time preparing for moments.

  179. We find this young man was prepared for the moment that he was going to be in.

  180. He was prepared for those things.

  181. He didn't even know what it was.

  182. But yet he was prepared.

  183. He didn't know why he had prepared.

  184. You know, we don't know.

  185. Maybe he left home with ten barley loaves and four fishes that morning and ate half of it.

  186. You know, we don't know.

  187. Like I said, there's a lot of things we're not told about this situation except for the fact that he had it.

  188. That he was there.

  189. He had a preparation.

  190. And, you know, we understand that we want sometimes for God to use us.

  191. But yet we don't come prepared.

  192. You know, if you're not prepared, you're generally not going to be available to make things come about.

  193. Preparation makes a big part in those things.

  194. And when we neglect to prepare, especially even like today,

  195. have you ever heard people come and I've heard this complaint about church sometimes?

  196. Well, I just don't get anything out of it.

  197. You know, part of the problem is preparation.

  198. You know, sometimes people don't serve the Lord because they weren't prepared to serve the Lord.

  199. They weren't prepared for those things, you know.

  200. Think about Ezra in the Old Testament.

  201. God used him to stir the people to revival.

  202. But God didn't use a man who just lived his life wandering through it.

  203. Look in the Old Testament.

  204. Go over to Ezra chapter 7 for a moment.

    Ezra 7 chapter mention

  205. Because Ezra chapter 7 gives us a good example here of this.

    Ezra 7 chapter mention

  206. Ezra chapter 7.

    Ezra 7 chapter mention

  207. And we find here in verse 10, it says,

  208. For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the Lord and to do it and to teach in Israel statutes and judgments.

  209. So in other words, we see Ezra did what?

  210. He prepared his heart.

  211. Now, you might say, well, that's just for the exceptional.

  212. Let's look at the opposite.

  213. You know, because God also speaks exactly the opposite of this.

  214. Look over to 2 Chronicles chapter 12 for a moment.

    2 Chronicles 12 chapter mention

  215. 2 Chronicles chapter 12.

    2 Chronicles 12 chapter mention

  216. We find an individual here by the name of Rehoboam.

  217. King of Israel.

  218. Verse 14 of chapter 12 of 2 Chronicles says,

  219. What a contrast.

  220. You have Ezra that God used mightily because he had prepared his heart.

  221. You have Rehoboam who did evil in the sight of God because why?

  222. He didn't prepare.

  223. Being prepared is important.

  224. Because how we do is only as good as our preparation.

  225. You know, when you consider the reality of preparation, you know,

  226. we need to look at what ways do you want God to use you in your life,

  227. both over the course of your lifetime and even this week.

  228. And you need to ask, what do I need to be prepared for?

  229. Because in order to be used, you have to be prepared.

  230. You know, it's interesting.

  231. There's a story about President Nixon talking to Winston Churchill.

  232. If you know anything of history, Churchill was known for his speeches.

  233. He would make these great speeches that seemed just like off the cuff.

  234. But there's a record about Nixon asking Churchill's son,

  235. and he told him how much he admired the prime minister's great ability at giving

  236. experitaneous speeches.

  237. And so Churchill's son replied, oh yes, I've watched my father work for hours preparing those.

  238. You know?

  239. In other words, what people thought was off the cuff

  240. was actually what people thought was exceptional because he was prepared.

  241. Nobody knew it, but few.

  242. But he was prepared for what was going to happen.

  243. He had the right preparation, but he was also in the right place.

  244. Look at our text there in verse 9.

  245. Look what it says.

  246. It says, there is a lad here.

  247. You know, to be in the right place.

  248. You know, the Bible doesn't indicate that this boy was with anybody.

  249. It doesn't say he was with his friends or his parents.

  250. He appears to be there almost by himself

  251. because there was many things he could have chosen to do,

  252. but he found his way to where Jesus is.

  253. I don't know about you, but young lads,

  254. here's a young boy, basically when they're calling him a lad,

  255. he's probably between 10 and 14 years old.

  256. And I don't know about you, 10 and 14 year old boys

  257. have a tendency to wander to places.

  258. You know?

  259. They kind of want to go and do,

  260. but this boy thought it was important to be where Jesus was.

  261. You know, to be where he needed to be

  262. that was going to make a difference.

  263. You know?

  264. He had chosen to do the very thing

  265. that was going to be beneficial.

  266. You know?

  267. Nobody drug him there.

  268. You know, the Bible doesn't say anything,

  269. but it says he was there.

  270. He was here.

  271. He was present where he was available.

  272. You know, he didn't need to be drugged there.

  273. He chose to be there.

  274. You know, Joshua made a great example of this

  275. in Joshua 24 and verse 15,

  276. where it says,

  277. If it seemed evil unto you to serve the Lord,

  278. choose you this day whom you will serve.

  279. You know, think about the reality.

  280. This boy made a choice of where he was going to be.

  281. I'm glad you made a choice this morning

  282. to be here at church.

  283. You know?

  284. Being here makes a difference, you know?

  285. We shouldn't take something to keep us away.

  286. We ought to measure how much does it take

  287. to keep us away from something.

  288. It puts a priority on it.

  289. You know?

  290. Because sometimes it doesn't take much

  291. to keep us from doing something.

  292. You know?

  293. And what's that tell us?

  294. It's not very important.

  295. The priority you put makes a difference

  296. in that, in the choices that you make.

  297. And so the best way to be a testimony

  298. to those around you is to always be

  299. where you should be on the Lord's day.

  300. You know?

  301. You know, it's funny.

  302. I guarantee you this morning

  303. your neighbors noted that you

  304. shoveled the driveway and left.

  305. Amen?

  306. They make a note.

  307. They may not say something,

  308. but they made a note that you

  309. got up

  310. and left this morning.

  311. That it was a Sunday morning.

  312. It's something that they see you do

  313. all the time.

  314. You know, that makes a statement

  315. of being where you ought to be.

  316. It's fulfilling what God tells us

  317. in Hebrews chapter 10,

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  318. not forsaking the assembling

  319. of ourselves together

  320. as the manner of some ends,

  321. but exhorting one another

  322. and so much more

  323. as you see the day approaching.

  324. You know, to be in the right place,

  325. to have the right preparation,

  326. but also the right people.

  327. You know, look here at verse 8

  328. here in our text.

  329. Notice what it says.

  330. And one of his disciples, Andrew,

  331. Simon Peter's brother,

  332. said unto him,

  333. There is a lad here.

  334. You know?

  335. When Jesus asked the disciples

  336. to get food to feed the hungry people,

  337. it just so happened

  338. that the only person with food

  339. was standing next to Andrew.

  340. You think that was coincidence?

  341. You know?

  342. We find here that it tells us

  343. that Jesus already knew

  344. what he was going to do.

  345. The Lord would have known

  346. long before anyone got hungry

  347. that the only food available

  348. was that little boy's lunch,

  349. and he was going to use it

  350. to make the need.

  351. He was going to use it

  352. to provide what was needed,

  353. and Jesus knew

  354. the boy with the lunch

  355. wouldn't get lost in the crowd.

  356. He knew the boy wasn't just

  357. looking for friends or activities

  358. or trouble to get into.

  359. The boy was there

  360. looking to hear Jesus,

  361. and Jesus knew the boy

  362. was going to get as close

  363. to someone

  364. who was already close to Jesus.

  365. You know?

  366. When we associate ourselves

  367. with the right kind of people,

  368. we put ourselves in positions

  369. where God can use us.

  370. You know, who you associate with

  371. makes a difference.

  372. Here's this young lad

  373. wanted to associate

  374. with Andrew.

  375. He wanted to be close

  376. to one that was close to Jesus.

  377. You know, the friends

  378. that we make

  379. make a difference.

  380. You know, the Bible,

  381. consider what Proverbs tells us.

  382. Proverbs 13, 20,

  383. says,

  384. He that walketh with wise men

  385. shall be wise,

  386. but a companion of fools

  387. shall be destroyed.

  388. You know?

  389. Who you choose

  390. to hang out with

  391. makes a difference.

  392. It influences us

  393. and influences others

  394. also.

  395. You know, God isn't looking

  396. for people

  397. who are sleeping in

  398. on Sunday

  399. or wasting their time

  400. on the internet

  401. to use it

  402. for His work.

  403. You know, people,

  404. God uses people

  405. who are willing

  406. to be available

  407. to be used,

  408. that are looking

  409. to be used,

  410. that are in the right place,

  411. prepared to do

  412. the right things.

  413. You know,

  414. consider Psalm 1

  415. in verse 1,

  416. it says,

  417. Blessed is the man

  418. that walketh not

  419. in the counsel

  420. of the ungodly,

  421. nor standeth

  422. in the way of sinners,

  423. nor sitteth

  424. in the seat

  425. of the scornful,

  426. but his delight

  427. is in the law

  428. of the Lord,

  429. and in His law

  430. doth he meditate

  431. day and night.

  432. You know?

  433. Being prepared

  434. and being around

  435. the right people

  436. walketh not

  437. after the counsel

  438. of the ungodly.

  439. You know?

  440. You know,

  441. when you're raising

  442. your kids,

  443. what's one thing

  444. you tell them?

  445. You need to be careful

  446. with your friends

  447. that you keep.

  448. You know,

  449. your friends

  450. can get you in trouble.

  451. You know?

  452. I can tell you,

  453. I've seen many people

  454. who've gotten lives

  455. messed up

  456. because somebody

  457. they hung out with

  458. chose to do.

  459. You could go down here

  460. to the county jail

  461. or the state jail

  462. and they're going

  463. to find people

  464. in there

  465. that are there

  466. because of the people

  467. they chose

  468. to hang out with.

  469. Because the people

  470. they hung out with

  471. did something

  472. and they got put in jail

  473. because they were

  474. an accomplice to something.

  475. because of the people

  476. they hung out with.

  477. I know people

  478. personally who have

  479. had jail issues

  480. because of that.

  481. Somebody they were with

  482. stole something.

  483. It was big enough

  484. it was on a trailer

  485. and they took

  486. the whole trailer

  487. and the guy said,

  488. well,

  489. they told me to pick it up

  490. so he didn't think

  491. anything about it

  492. and he found out later

  493. the guy stole it.

  494. But since he was present,

  495. guess what?

  496. Accomplice.

  497. The friends you keep

  498. can have an impact.

  499. If you want to have

  500. an impact for God,

  501. you need to hang around

  502. people who are going

  503. to have a godly impact.

  504. To do those things.

  505. You know,

  506. he had the right patience.

  507. You know,

  508. as a kid,

  509. do you ever eat your lunch

  510. before lunchtime?

  511. You know?

  512. Yeah,

  513. as a kid.

  514. Jared's like,

  515. glad mom's not here.

  516. You know?

  517. This miracle appears

  518. to take place

  519. sometime here

  520. in the late afternoon

  521. just before the people

  522. were making their way home.

  523. You know,

  524. Matthew 14

  525. tells us that

  526. it was evening.

  527. Luke 9 says

  528. the day was wearing away.

  529. In other words,

  530. this is not lunchtime.

  531. It's at the end of the day.

  532. You know,

  533. I think the reason

  534. a lot of people

  535. didn't have much left to eat

  536. because they were there

  537. all day

  538. and what'd they do at lunch?

  539. They ate their

  540. lunch.

  541. You know?

  542. They'd already eaten

  543. what they'd brought.

  544. So now,

  545. if the day is weary,

  546. it's dragging on

  547. and now they don't

  548. have anything.

  549. You know,

  550. it's possible

  551. there were other people

  552. that day

  553. who had brought food

  554. and they'd already

  555. eaten it

  556. earlier in the day

  557. which would make

  558. logical sense

  559. that that would happen.

  560. You know,

  561. as you're sitting there

  562. and Jesus is speaking,

  563. I imagine people

  564. were munching,

  565. you know,

  566. it's just something

  567. that people naturally do

  568. especially if you're

  569. someplace for a long time.

  570. You know?

  571. It comes natural.

  572. It's just like us

  573. when we hang out

  574. we do what?

  575. We eat.

  576. You know?

  577. Food is associated

  578. with fellowship.

  579. The two seem to tie together.

  580. I don't care

  581. who or what,

  582. it's a human thing,

  583. isn't it?

  584. That those things

  585. tie together

  586. in what we do.

  587. And so we realize,

  588. you've probably noticed

  589. in Scripture

  590. and no doubt

  591. in your own life,

  592. that God's timing here

  593. though is always perfect

  594. because the boy

  595. waited for the right time

  596. and everyone experienced

  597. the benefits

  598. of him being

  599. in the right place

  600. at the right time

  601. ready to serve

  602. the Lord.

  603. Because we understand

  604. that God's timing

  605. is always perfect.

  606. He's never early

  607. and he's certainly

  608. never late.

  609. God always provides

  610. at the right time.

  611. You know,

  612. Ecclesiastes 3.1 says,

  613. for everything there is

  614. a season and a time

  615. to every purpose

  616. under heaven.

  617. You know,

  618. when we realize

  619. that God's timing

  620. is definitely different

  621. from our timing.

  622. You know,

  623. that's one of the things

  624. as a Christian,

  625. as one that follows Christ,

  626. you need to keep in mind

  627. that God's timing

  628. is not always our timing.

  629. Or should I say,

  630. our timing is not always

  631. God's timing.

  632. Might be a better way

  633. of putting it.

  634. We want to be on our time.

  635. You know,

  636. we want everything centered

  637. about how we think

  638. and what we want

  639. and want to get

  640. that accomplished.

  641. You know,

  642. but consider what Isaiah 55

  643. tells us.

  644. It says,

  645. for my thoughts

  646. are not your thoughts,

  647. neither are your ways

  648. my ways,

  649. saith the Lord.

  650. As for the heavens

  651. are higher than the earth,

  652. so are my ways

  653. higher than your ways

  654. and my thoughts

  655. than your thoughts.

  656. You know,

  657. waiting on God

  658. is important.

  659. To know God's timing

  660. and to wait

  661. and to see God work

  662. because when we prepare

  663. yourself

  664. for what God would have,

  665. you know,

  666. that's preparing

  667. by spending time

  668. with Him,

  669. being in the right place,

  670. staying faithful

  671. in your home

  672. and in church,

  673. fellowship with the right people,

  674. make good and godly friends

  675. who will encourage you

  676. spiritually

  677. and then let God work

  678. because those things

  679. play out

  680. and you know,

  681. we see here

  682. that these four priorities

  683. are part

  684. of your character.

  685. God's going to use you.

  686. You know,

  687. when you see the character

  688. of this young man,

  689. when you have

  690. that same character,

  691. God can use you.

  692. When you're prepared

  693. in the right place,

  694. ready for the right things

  695. and have the patience

  696. to wait upon God

  697. to do it.

  698. You know,

  699. Psalm 37, 7 says,

  700. rest in the Lord

  701. and wait patiently

  702. for Him.

  703. So we see the boy's character

  704. but we also

  705. see the boy's charity.

  706. See the boy's charity.

  707. when they say

  708. that the weight

  709. of a man's heart

  710. is through his stomach,

  711. I would add

  712. the way to know

  713. a little boy's heart

  714. is to see what he does

  715. with his lunch.

  716. You know,

  717. because think about this,

  718. here's a young boy

  719. that was just as hungry

  720. as everybody else

  721. but he was willing

  722. to give it.

  723. That makes an interesting

  724. statement, doesn't it?

  725. Because this young man,

  726. Jesus used

  727. the little boy's generosity

  728. to reach the hearts

  729. and minds

  730. of 5,000 men

  731. plus women and children

  732. as they got their

  733. stomachs filled

  734. from what Jesus made

  735. from a small meal.

  736. I want you to notice here

  737. he gave willingly.

  738. You know,

  739. that's important.

  740. The willingness

  741. of giving.

  742. You know,

  743. we don't know

  744. if Andrew asked

  745. the boy for his lunch

  746. or if the boy

  747. offered it on his own

  748. but the very least

  749. we know

  750. there was no resistance

  751. on the part of this boy,

  752. no desire for negotiation,

  753. no what's-in-it-for-me attitude.

  754. The Bible says

  755. that he was willing

  756. to give.

  757. You know,

  758. think about how would

  759. this story have been different

  760. if the boy wouldn't

  761. have been willing to give?

  762. Would have turned

  763. the whole thing around,

  764. wouldn't it?

  765. His charity,

  766. his desire,

  767. his boy gave his lunch

  768. willing to see

  769. what God would do.

  770. You know,

  771. willing to say,

  772. hey,

  773. this is what I have.

  774. What can God do with it?

  775. You know,

  776. sometimes I think

  777. we begin to withhold

  778. from God

  779. things thinking

  780. what we want to do

  781. with it

  782. and saying,

  783. God,

  784. this is what I have.

  785. What can you do with it?

  786. This is what I have

  787. available

  788. for you to use.

  789. Because sometimes

  790. we hold back

  791. from God

  792. thinking we need it

  793. when God says,

  794. look what I can do

  795. if you're willing

  796. to give.

  797. What are you trying

  798. to negotiate?

  799. Have you ever

  800. tried to negotiate

  801. with God?

  802. I won't ask

  803. for a raise of hands.

  804. That seems to be

  805. something else.

  806. You know,

  807. well,

  808. Lord,

  809. if I give this,

  810. I expect this.

  811. You know,

  812. people do it often.

  813. I would venture

  814. to say we're probably

  815. all guilty

  816. at one point

  817. or another.

  818. That you try

  819. to negotiate

  820. with God.

  821. You say,

  822. well,

  823. what do people,

  824. I guarantee you,

  825. I've seen it

  826. over the years.

  827. I've seen people

  828. as soon as life

  829. gets turned upside down,

  830. they show back up

  831. at church saying,

  832. God,

  833. I'm going to get

  834. back in church.

  835. You just make

  836. everything right.

  837. Yeah,

  838. you might be doing

  839. something right,

  840. but you're not

  841. doing it for the

  842. right reason.

  843. You're not doing

  844. it because you

  845. love the Lord.

  846. You're doing it

  847. because you're

  848. trying to negotiate.

  849. You're trying

  850. to manipulate.

  851. That's not being

  852. willing to do

  853. what God's asked

  854. you to do.

  855. You know,

  856. we talk about

  857. people willing

  858. to give.

  859. I mean,

  860. when you consider

  861. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 8 chapter mention

  862. chapter 8

  863. where the apostle

  864. Paul talks about

  865. the churches

  866. of Macedonia

  867. and he makes

  868. a statement,

  869. he says,

  870. out of their

  871. deep poverty

  872. they were willing

  873. to give,

  874. it wasn't

  875. out of their

  876. abundance,

  877. it wasn't

  878. out of the

  879. fact that

  880. they had

  881. surplus.

  882. Paul makes

  883. a note

  884. there in

  885. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 8 chapter mention

  886. chapter 8,

  887. look over there

  888. in 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 8 chapter mention

  889. chapter 8

  890. and down in

  891. verse 1,

  892. it says,

  893. moreover,

  894. brethren,

  895. we do you

  896. to wit

  897. of the grace

  898. of God

  899. bestowed upon

  900. the churches

  901. of Macedonia

  902. how that in

  903. great trial

  904. of affliction

  905. the abundance

  906. of their joy

  907. and their deep

  908. poverty abounded

  909. under the riches

  910. of their liberality.

  911. For to their

  912. power I bear

  913. record,

  914. yea,

  915. and beyond

  916. their power

  917. they were

  918. willing of

  919. themselves.

  920. I mean,

  921. think about

  922. the reality

  923. of that passage

  924. when it says

  925. that they

  926. didn't give

  927. to the saints

  928. that were

  929. suffering in

  930. Jerusalem

  931. with full

  932. pockets,

  933. they gave

  934. knowing it

  935. was going

  936. to cost

  937. them something

  938. too.

  939. They were

  940. willing to

  941. give the

  942. goodness

  943. and the

  944. blessing

  945. of God

  946. awaits

  947. believers

  948. who have

  949. a willing

  950. heart.

  951. You know,

  952. stinginess

  953. and stubbornness

  954. always have

  955. a bitter

  956. end.

  957. You know,

  958. look at

  959. Isaiah chapter

    Isaiah 1 chapter mention

  960. 1 for a

  961. moment.

  962. Isaiah chapter

    Isaiah 1:19

  963. 1 verse 19

  964. tells us this,

  965. if you be

  966. willing and

  967. obedient you

  968. shall eat

  969. the good

  970. of the land

  971. but if you

  972. refuse and

  973. rebel you

  974. shall be

  975. devoured

  976. with the

  977. sword for

  978. the mouth

  979. of the

  980. Lord hath

  981. spoken it.

  982. But notice

  983. that if you

  984. be what?

  985. Willing

  986. and obedient.

  987. That's

  988. important.

  989. He gave

  990. willingly.

  991. He was

  992. willing and

  993. obedient but

  994. he also

  995. gave wholly

  996. or completely.

  997. This boy

  998. had given

  999. three loaves

  1000. and one

  1001. fish.

  1002. You know,

  1003. he very easily

  1004. could have

  1005. gave smaller

  1006. amount.

  1007. I mean,

  1008. you think about

  1009. that of what

  1010. was happening.

  1011. He said he

  1012. had five loaves

  1013. and two

  1014. fishes.

  1015. He could have

  1016. said,

  1017. hey,

  1018. I'll trade

  1019. this in here.

  1020. I'll give you

  1021. half of it

  1022. or at least

  1023. some of it.

  1024. You know,

  1025. that's pretty

  1026. generous.

  1027. You know,

  1028. but he

  1029. didn't,

  1030. even though I

  1031. believe the

  1032. Lord could have

  1033. fed them

  1034. all on

  1035. whatever the

  1036. boy gave.

  1037. Matter of

  1038. fact,

  1039. Jesus had

  1040. already proved

  1041. he could

  1042. feed them

  1043. without

  1044. anything.

  1045. I mean,

  1046. here's the

  1047. one that

  1048. spoke creation

  1049. in that the

  1050. process of

  1051. what he was

  1052. doing wasn't

  1053. the issue.

  1054. I mean,

  1055. Jesus could

  1056. have fed

  1057. the whole

  1058. crowd without

  1059. the boy,

  1060. but he

  1061. wanted to,

  1062. he already

  1063. knew what

  1064. he was going

  1065. to do and

  1066. there was a

  1067. purpose behind

  1068. it.

  1069. You know,

  1070. he wasn't

  1071. generous with

  1072. the lesser

  1073. amount.

  1074. He made

  1075. the entire

  1076. dynamic.

  1077. He was

  1078. willing to

  1079. give it

  1080. to the

  1081. Lord.

  1082. He's willing

  1083. to give

  1084. all.

  1085. You know,

  1086. sometimes I

  1087. think instead

  1088. of like this

  1089. boy,

  1090. we like to

  1091. hold things

  1092. back from

  1093. God.

  1094. To say,

  1095. God,

  1096. you can have

  1097. this part

  1098. and this

  1099. part,

  1100. but not

  1101. this part

  1102. of my

  1103. life.

  1104. We want

  1105. to hold

  1106. things back

  1107. instead of

  1108. God,

  1109. I want to

  1110. give it

  1111. all to

  1112. you.

  1113. So often

  1114. we focus

  1115. on what

  1116. we are

  1117. giving

  1118. God,

  1119. but God

  1120. really is

  1121. more focused

  1122. on what

  1123. we are

  1124. keeping.

  1125. What are

  1126. we holding

  1127. back?

  1128. What are

  1129. we keeping

  1130. from him?

  1131. You know,

  1132. consider the

  1133. importance of

  1134. this.

  1135. If you

  1136. remember back

  1137. in 1 Kings

    1 Kings 3 chapter mention

  1138. chapter 3,

  1139. a pretty

  1140. famous passage

  1141. of scripture

  1142. where you

  1143. have Solomon

  1144. has two

  1145. harlots who

  1146. lived in the

  1147. same house

  1148. and each

  1149. had given

  1150. birth to

  1151. a son.

  1152. And a few

  1153. days apart,

  1154. one of the

  1155. babies died

  1156. in the night.

  1157. So the

  1158. mother of the

  1159. dead baby

  1160. exchanged the

  1161. two children

  1162. when the

  1163. other mother

  1164. woke up

  1165. to feed

  1166. her son

  1167. and he

  1168. was dead

  1169. but upon

  1170. further

  1171. examination

  1172. she realized

  1173. that it

  1174. was not

  1175. her son

  1176. and there

  1177. was an

  1178. argument

  1179. and exchange

  1180. that took

  1181. place.

  1182. And so we

  1183. find here

  1184. that they

  1185. come before

  1186. King Solomon

  1187. and when

  1188. the matter

  1189. was brought

  1190. before King

  1191. Solomon he

  1192. declared divide

  1193. the living

  1194. child in two

  1195. and give

  1196. half to the

  1197. one and

  1198. half to the

  1199. other.

  1200. You know?

  1201. Now that

  1202. would have

  1203. been great

  1204. advice if you

  1205. were talking

  1206. about the

  1207. apple pie or

  1208. the gallon

  1209. of ice cream.

  1210. you know?

  1211. But I want

  1212. you to

  1213. understand

  1214. this was a

  1215. living human

  1216. being but

  1217. notice the

  1218. response.

  1219. The mother

  1220. was very

  1221. willing to

  1222. say I

  1223. would much

  1224. rather I

  1225. will give

  1226. him up

  1227. if he

  1228. lives.

  1229. She's willing

  1230. to give

  1231. everything for

  1232. the sake

  1233. of another.

  1234. You know?

  1235. Because a

  1236. divided baby

  1237. is no baby

  1238. and guess

  1239. what?

  1240. A divided

  1241. life is no

  1242. life.

  1243. God doesn't

  1244. desire just

  1245. to be part

  1246. of our

  1247. life or a

  1248. few hours

  1249. on Sunday.

  1250. He desires

  1251. our whole

  1252. self.

  1253. He desires

  1254. all of us.

  1255. You know?

  1256. Consider

  1257. Deuteronomy

  1258. 5 and

  1259. or excuse me

  1260. Deuteronomy

  1261. 6 and

  1262. verse 5

  1263. where it

  1264. says thou

  1265. shalt love

  1266. the Lord

  1267. thy God

  1268. with all

  1269. thy heart

  1270. with all

  1271. thy soul

  1272. and with

  1273. all thy

  1274. might.

  1275. The key

  1276. word there

  1277. is all.

  1278. Not

  1279. some

  1280. but all.

  1281. He gave

  1282. willingly,

  1283. he gave

  1284. wholly,

  1285. he gave

  1286. wisely.

  1287. You know?

  1288. Verse 12

  1289. there in

  1290. John chapter

    John 6 chapter mention

  1291. 6 says when

  1292. they were

  1293. filled.

  1294. You know,

  1295. what a great

  1296. decision this

  1297. turned out to

  1298. be for the

  1299. little boy.

  1300. You know,

  1301. in verse 12

  1302. certainly would

  1303. have included

  1304. the little

  1305. boy.

  1306. He was

  1307. filled right

  1308. along with

  1309. the rest

  1310. of the

  1311. multitude.

  1312. In other

  1313. words,

  1314. he was willing

  1315. to give

  1316. all and

  1317. still got

  1318. everything

  1319. he wanted.

  1320. You know?

  1321. Everything

  1322. for the meal

  1323. he left

  1324. full.

  1325. He didn't

  1326. lack

  1327. anything

  1328. by giving

  1329. all to

  1330. the Lord.

  1331. You know?

  1332. This little

  1333. boy

  1334. was willing

  1335. to give

  1336. to the

  1337. Lord and

  1338. was willing

  1339. and received

  1340. in return

  1341. his stomach

  1342. was full.

  1343. You know?

  1344. This is a

  1345. better deal

  1346. than the buffet.

  1347. He gave

  1348. what he had

  1349. and got

  1350. far more.

  1351. it's a

  1352. principle

  1353. that we

  1354. can realize

  1355. because God

  1356. will always

  1357. do more

  1358. with what

  1359. we give

  1360. him

  1361. than we

  1362. could have

  1363. done with

  1364. it ourselves.

  1365. God

  1366. promises to

  1367. give more

  1368. than we

  1369. give.

  1370. It's not

  1371. merely a

  1372. promise about

  1373. our money

  1374. but it's

  1375. a surety

  1376. with respect

  1377. to our

  1378. time,

  1379. our talents,

  1380. our treasures,

  1381. and everything

  1382. that we

  1383. possess.

  1384. You know,

  1385. look over

  1386. in Luke

    Luke 6 chapter mention

  1387. chapter 6.

  1388. Luke chapter 6

    Luke 6 chapter mention

  1389. in verse 38

  1390. tells us this.

  1391. It says,

  1392. give and it

  1393. shall be

  1394. given unto

  1395. you.

  1396. Good measure

  1397. pressed down,

  1398. shaken together,

  1399. and running

  1400. over shall men

  1401. give into your

  1402. bosom.

  1403. For with the

  1404. same measure

  1405. that you meet

  1406. with all,

  1407. it shall be

  1408. measured to

  1409. you again.

  1410. Now,

  1411. I like to

  1412. call this

  1413. verse the

  1414. scoop shovel

  1415. effect.

  1416. You know,

  1417. the size

  1418. shovel you

  1419. choose to

  1420. give to

  1421. God is

  1422. the same

  1423. size as

  1424. the shovel

  1425. he uses

  1426. to give

  1427. back.

  1428. Because,

  1429. you know,

  1430. sometimes,

  1431. you know,

  1432. it's kind of

  1433. like in the

  1434. kitchen,

  1435. you know,

  1436. certain things

  1437. you only want

  1438. a small bit

  1439. of.

  1440. You know,

  1441. have you ever

  1442. seen them

  1443. little grapefruit

  1444. spoons?

  1445. You know,

  1446. how many know

  1447. what a

  1448. grapefruit

  1449. spoon is?

  1450. It's that

  1451. little dinky

  1452. spoon with

  1453. the serrated

  1454. edges on

  1455. the side

  1456. of it,

  1457. and that's

  1458. so you can

  1459. dig the

  1460. grapefruit

  1461. out of

  1462. there.

  1463. You know,

  1464. then you

  1465. have a

  1466. tablespoon

  1467. and teaspoons

  1468. and what's

  1469. unique about

  1470. all the

  1471. different spoons,

  1472. there's what,

  1473. they're all

  1474. different sizes

  1475. for different

  1476. purposes.

  1477. you know,

  1478. now certain

  1479. things you

  1480. like,

  1481. you know,

  1482. when you're

  1483. eating ice

  1484. cream,

  1485. you don't

  1486. want to

  1487. have a

  1488. grapefruit

  1489. spoon.

  1490. You know,

  1491. most people,

  1492. I've seen

  1493. very few

  1494. people deal

  1495. out ice

  1496. cream with

  1497. a grapefruit

  1498. spoon.

  1499. Most of

  1500. them get

  1501. an ice

  1502. cream scoop.

  1503. Have you

  1504. ever noticed

  1505. that's one of

  1506. the biggest

  1507. spoons in

  1508. the drawer?

  1509. They're usually

  1510. broad and

  1511. wide and,

  1512. you know,

  1513. what this

  1514. verse is

  1515. saying,

  1516. what spoon

  1517. you want

  1518. to get

  1519. out,

  1520. to give

  1521. to God,

  1522. God's

  1523. going to

  1524. in turn

  1525. use that

  1526. same size

  1527. spoon.

  1528. You know,

  1529. if you use

  1530. a grapefruit

  1531. spoon,

  1532. you don't

  1533. get a

  1534. whole lot.

  1535. Use an

  1536. ice cream

  1537. scoop,

  1538. you have

  1539. a lot.

  1540. Very simple.

  1541. It's a

  1542. great picture.

  1543. You know,

  1544. when we

  1545. understand of

  1546. what we

  1547. have,

  1548. because in

  1549. our life,

  1550. our time,

  1551. our talents,

  1552. our treasures,

  1553. are really

  1554. caught up in

  1555. this little

  1556. boy's lunch

  1557. as a picture.

  1558. Because what

  1559. are we willing

  1560. to give

  1561. to the

  1562. Lord?

  1563. Because what

  1564. we have

  1565. there is a

  1566. decision,

  1567. are you

  1568. going to

  1569. keep it,

  1570. or are

  1571. you going

  1572. to give

  1573. it?

  1574. The question

  1575. is are we

  1576. going to

  1577. give it

  1578. to the

  1579. one who

  1580. provided it

  1581. in the first

  1582. place,

  1583. and watch

  1584. him multiply

  1585. and bless

  1586. it,

  1587. and not

  1588. only for

  1589. our benefit,

  1590. for the

  1591. benefit of

  1592. the multitude

  1593. around.

  1594. You know,

  1595. this young

  1596. boy,

  1597. we don't

  1598. even know

  1599. his name,

  1600. but he

  1601. benefited

  1602. thousands

  1603. of people,

  1604. because he

  1605. was willing

  1606. to give.

  1607. He was

  1608. willing to

  1609. give.

  1610. You know,

  1611. so if we

  1612. want to

  1613. reap those

  1614. blessings,

  1615. let us

  1616. take a

  1617. lesson from

  1618. this boy.

  1619. We need

  1620. to prepare

  1621. ourselves to

  1622. be used

  1623. of the

  1624. Lord,

  1625. you know,

  1626. to invest

  1627. our time

  1628. seeking him

  1629. through his

  1630. word and

  1631. spending time

  1632. in prayer.

  1633. You know,

  1634. we need to

  1635. be in the

  1636. right place.

  1637. We need to

  1638. be,

  1639. let's speak

  1640. of being

  1641. faithful in

  1642. our homes

  1643. and serving

  1644. the Lord

  1645. and being

  1646. in church,

  1647. being where

  1648. we ought

  1649. to be.

  1650. You know,

  1651. do we need

  1652. to seek

  1653. fellowship

  1654. with people

  1655. who are

  1656. already close

  1657. to the

  1658. Lord?

  1659. We need

  1660. to patiently

  1661. trust his

  1662. plan and

  1663. his timing,

  1664. and we need

  1665. to be prepared

  1666. ourselves in

  1667. the ways that

  1668. we will prepare

  1669. to give at

  1670. the right time.

  1671. Our heart

  1672. will be prepared

  1673. to give as

  1674. this boy did

  1675. willingly,

  1676. wholly,

  1677. and wisely

  1678. for the

  1679. Lord.

  1680. You know,

  1681. this morning

  1682. it's a good

  1683. time to ask

  1684. ourselves as we

  1685. enter into a

  1686. new year,

  1687. are you

  1688. withholding

  1689. something of

  1690. your life

  1691. from God?

  1692. Are you

  1693. willing to

  1694. trust that

  1695. he could do

  1696. more with

  1697. it than

  1698. you could?

  1699. You know,

  1700. we need to

  1701. consider,

  1702. will we

  1703. ask God

  1704. to take

  1705. what little

  1706. we have

  1707. and do

  1708. something

  1709. big?

  1710. So I

  1711. believe God

  1712. can take

  1713. little things

  1714. that we're

  1715. willing to

  1716. give and

  1717. do big

  1718. things that

  1719. not only

  1720. impact us,

  1721. but impact

  1722. thousands of

  1723. others.

  1724. This little

  1725. boy with

  1726. no name

  1727. brings forth

  1728. that very

  1729. principle.

  1730. Something to

  1731. consider as we

  1732. enter a new

  1733. year.

  1734. Is there

  1735. something you're

  1736. holding back

  1737. from God

  1738. that you need

  1739. to give?

  1740. Turn over to

  1741. him in your

  1742. life.

  1743. Let's pray.

  1744. Heavenly

  1745. Father,

  1746. as we

  1747. just

  1748. humbly

  1749. come before

  1750. you this

  1751. morning.

  1752. Amen.

  1753. Amen.
