  1. I was just going to go over to Mark chapter 14, Mark chapter 14 this morning as we continue on through the book of Mark here,

Mark 14 chapter mention Mark 14 chapter mention

  2. as we see that reality of who Jesus is.

  3. And the Gospels reveal to us all those things about Jesus, who he is,

  4. and more importantly, or just as importantly, what he has done for us.

  5. You know, it's important to realize what Jesus has done,

  6. and as Mark continues to record these days in this last week of Jesus' life,

  7. we find here that it's now come to Wednesday morning as Jesus and his disciples once again begin to head towards Jerusalem.

  8. And we know that it was the day of preparation for the Passover meal,

  9. and the disciples began to wonder where they were going to celebrate it.

  10. You know, it was one of those things, it was not if, it was the when.

  11. They understood that Jesus was going to celebrate the Passover because it was his custom.

  12. It's just what he did, and as we understand, as we've seen him walk through this last week,

  13. we've come to this day that's very critical because we see that transition

  14. between what we talked about last week with Judas and the chief priests and the scribes doing the plot to kill Jesus,

  15. and how all that went together, the different motivations that people have in that,

  16. and even how we have to watch our motivations about things.

  17. And then we're going to see here today,

  18. Jesus, as he begins talking about here the last Passover,

  19. Passover is what we're going to kind of call it,

  20. because this is the last one that he celebrates before he goes to the cross.

  21. And there's some important things that happen at this event.

  22. But we need to understand the things surrounding it and the things going on with it,

  23. because we know that from last week had been just the right time for everything to come together

  24. and to understand how this was happening there.

  25. And we know that Judas was looking for that convenient time to turn Jesus over to the scribes and the chief priests.

  26. That convenient time.

  27. And all this was working and doing and coming together,

  28. and now we find it was the day of preparation to celebrate such a key event in Jewish history,

  29. because oftentimes we just talk about the Passover.

  30. But, you know, when we look and understand,

  31. we're going to talk this morning a little bit,

  32. because the Passover was a key memorial in Jewish history.

  33. It was key to everything that they did.

  34. It happened at the beginning of the year.

  35. It was the religious festival that kicked off everything of their calendar.

  36. It was the one that focused upon what God had done for them as they came out of Egypt.

  37. Because remember, it was instituted the night that the Israelites left out of Egypt

  38. after they had had the death angel pass over them because of the blood of the Lamb.

  39. And we'll talk more about that as we get into the message here this morning.

  40. But we find here that as Jesus is doing this,

  41. let's pick up in our account here on chapter 14.

  42. If you found chapter 14 in your Bible, let's stand together

  43. in honor of reading of the Word of God here this morning.

  44. And we'll pick up in verse 12 here this morning.

  45. And it says,

  46. And he said,

  47. And he senteth forth two of his disciples, and saith unto them,

  48. Go ye into the city, and there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water.

  49. Follow him.

  50. And wheresoever he shall go in, you shall say to the good men of the house,

  51. The master saith, Where is the guest chamber where I shall eat the Passover with my disciples?

  52. And he will show you a large upper room, furnished and prepared.

  53. There make ready for us.

  54. And his disciples went forth and came into the city,

  55. and found as he had said unto them, and they made ready the Passover.

  56. Let's pray.

  57. Heavenly Fathers, we come before you this morning.

  58. Lord, we're thankful for your Word.

  59. Lord, we're thankful for even the picture that we see here within the Passover,

  60. the picture of your redemption for us.

  61. Lord, help us to see and to understand,

  62. and to grab a hold of and to make personal the reality of what it declares to us.

  63. And Lord, as we pray you just have your hand upon each heart, each life here today.

  64. Lord, just help us to focus upon your Word and what you would have for us

  65. as we prepare for the message here today.

  66. Lord, and we just give you all the praise in Jesus' name.

  67. Amen.

  68. May be seated.

  69. Amen.

  70. You know, we see here that the time of this happening was the 14th day of the month.

  71. And we know that because it was the day that the Passover was to be killed.

  72. We know from a Jewish history that the calendar was laid out.

  73. It was Wednesday that this was taking place in that the 14th day of the month.

  74. And when they were ready to kill the Passover,

  75. Passover, and they were going to kill the Passover lamb to make ready for the meal

  76. that was a part of the celebration.

  77. You know, and this was the main feast of the religious year for the children of Israel.

  78. Because we see here, as we begin here, it says the first day of unleavened bread

  79. when they killed the Passover.

  80. Now, we see here, and we talked about this last week,

  81. the Feast of Unleavened Bread was a time here.

  82. It's talking about here this period of time from the time that they chose the lamb,

  83. how they observed the lamb, how the lamb was slain,

  84. and then the feast that followed the seven days afterwards

  85. where they would not eat of any leavened bread.

  86. All this was the Feast of Unleavened Bread.

  87. When they talk about that, each one of those is a separate thing,

  88. but they talk about it because it all happens in sequence.

  89. It all happened in a flow and set and calendared out every year.

  90. These things took place,

  91. and we see these things coming together with the Passover being prepared,

  92. but we see the focus of the Passover because notice here

  93. that the lamb was the important part where they killed the Passover.

  94. The Passover, what they killed was a lamb,

  95. and we're going to look at what those things were here in just a little bit,

  96. but the Passover lamb was slain.

  97. It was a meal, and that required preparation.

  98. And we see here that just as the meal, that preparation was required,

  99. so the disciples said,

  100. Hey, Jesus, we know you haven't said anything about where we're going to eat the meal this year

  101. because the way this is asked, it's like it was an expectation.

  102. In other words, they said, you know, before we knew what was going on,

  103. this year we don't seem to know.

  104. You know, but we know that you got this in store,

  105. and so the disciples come and ask,

  106. and we know from Luke 22,

  107. it tells us specifically that it was Peter and John

  108. that were the specific ones heading this up,

  109. and they were the ones that inquired about the need for the meal,

  110. and they knew it was the day that the Passover lamb was to be killed

  111. because it commemorated something very important,

  112. because it commemorated the night that God,

  113. the death angel of judgment in Egypt,

  114. passed over all those that had blood applied upon their doorposts.

  115. You know, we understand that that was the tenth plague there in Egypt,

  116. and we find that Exodus 12 tells us about that preparation

  117. of what the disciples and Jesus were considering and looking at there.

  118. And so I encourage you to go over to Exodus chapter 12 here this morning for a moment,

    Exodus 12 chapter mention

  119. because if we're going to talk about the feast of the Passover,

  120. one thing we need to understand, what are we talking about?

  121. You know, it gets talked about a lot.

  122. You know, you hear the term Passover,

  123. but what does it mean?

  124. What was involved in it?

  125. Because it's important to see the picture of what's taking place here,

  126. to know what was in it.

  127. And it's important to see how it applies,

  128. and the picture that we see here applies for us even today.

  129. Because here in Exodus 12,

  130. it declares for them all the requirements for the preparation.

  131. It talks about the preparation.

  132. It talks about the participants.

  133. It talks about the process.

  134. The preparation of the meal and the purpose of the meal.

  135. And we see here it was the beginning of another feast that lasted seven days,

  136. the feast of unleavened bread,

  137. where leaven would be removed from the household during the duration of the feast.

  138. Now we understand as we look at leaven in the Old Testament,

  139. and even in the New,

  140. you'll find it equates to sin.

  141. It's a picture of how it impacts the whole of the person.

  142. You know, when we understand that sin doesn't just impact one part,

  143. it impacts all.

  144. Just like leaven or yeast,

  145. when you put yeast in a loaf of bread,

  146. there's none of it exempt.

  147. It affects all of it.

  148. It's that picture that we see here.

  149. But the regulations here for the Passover are found here in Exodus 12.

  150. Let's just take a glimpse at what's going on here,

  151. because as we look here in verse 3 of chapter 12,

  152. it says,

  153. And then in verse 5 we find,

  154. And so we see here that the first thing they had to do was choose a lamb.

  155. You know, they had to choose a lamb,

  156. and then they had to prepare the lamb by watching and observing

  157. to make sure it was without blemish.

  158. You know, they had to make sure it met the requirements.

  159. You know, to know that everything was in order.

  160. And then on the 14th day they would kill it in the evening.

  161. And they would do so, we see here in verse 7,

  162. back in Exodus it says,

  163. And so we see here they would take some of that blood

  164. when they were preparing the lamb,

  165. and they would take,

  166. and the Bible says that they would dip it in hyssop,

  167. and they would put it on the doorposts,

  168. and put it over,

  169. and they had that blood on the outside of the doorpost.

  170. And we're going to see that picture,

  171. and what that did for them here in just a moment.

  172. But we find here that then they're supposed to take the lamb

  173. and roast it with fire.

  174. Verse 8 tells us here of that.

  175. Look here in verse 8,

  176. it says,

  177. And they shall eat the flesh in that night,

  178. roast with fire,

  179. and unleavened bread,

  180. and with bitter herbs they shall eat it.

  181. You know,

  182. and so we see here there's some things that they have.

  183. They roast with fire,

  184. and they serve it with unleavened bread,

  185. and the bitter herb.

  186. Now,

  187. the bitter herb,

  188. how many like horseradish?

  189. That's the bitter herb,

  190. you know.

  191. It does have a different twang to it than most,

  192. you know.

  193. People like hot things,

  194. but horseradish has a distinct taste.

  195. And it's a bitter root.

  196. But we're going to see here,

  197. that also represents the bitterness that they had

  198. as they were captive there in Israel.

  199. Or in Egypt,

  200. and as Israel was preparing to come out.

  201. And we see here that there was a way

  202. they were supposed to eat it.

  203. Watch this,

  204. because this is unique,

  205. because here's the evening meal.

  206. Most of the time you think about the evening meal,

  207. it's like you kind of are winding down,

  208. you're kind of settling in,

  209. but it tells them that they're supposed to eat it.

  210. Look here in verse 11,

  211. how they're supposed to eat.

  212. They're supposed to eat it prepared.

  213. It says,

  214. And thus shall you eat it with your loins girded,

  215. your shoes on your feet,

  216. and your staff in your hand,

  217. and you shall eat it in haste.

  218. You know?

  219. So in other words,

  220. you're not going to get in trouble for eating fast.

  221. You know?

  222. Yeah.

  223. Ever growing up,

  224. have kids come to the table

  225. and they're like scarfing it down

  226. and mom's going,

  227. slow down!

  228. You know,

  229. it was the one time a year

  230. that you got to eat all the lamb they wanted

  231. and nobody told them to slow down.

  232. Because they're to eat it in haste.

  233. And there was a reason for that

  234. because they were supposed to be ready to go.

  235. They were supposed to be ready for what was to come

  236. and ready to be and prepared for that.

  237. But I want you to see one quick note here.

  238. We'll get back to this in a moment.

  239. But at the end of verse 11,

  240. I want you to see here

  241. that even though God gave the Passover

  242. to Israel to celebrate,

  243. there's an important phrase

  244. because it is the Lord's Passover.

  245. It's not ours.

  246. It's not yours.

  247. It belongs to the Lord.

  248. Because it's the Lord's picture

  249. that He puts into it.

  250. It's what God is going to do for us

  251. because this is the Lord's Passover.

  252. But let's break this down just a moment

  253. because let's explain here

  254. what's happening.

  255. Let's stop here for a moment

  256. and look at the importance

  257. of what's happening with this meal.

  258. Because it's easy to see the details

  259. and the ritual of the event.

  260. You know,

  261. sometimes people get caught up

  262. in ritual and detail

  263. and we miss what's involved in it.

  264. You know,

  265. we are people that like repetition.

  266. Now most people,

  267. I don't like things to be...

  268. You like things the same.

  269. You know,

  270. people feel comfortable

  271. when they know what's going to happen.

  272. When there's consistency,

  273. there's comfort that comes.

  274. We like that consistency.

  275. We like the fact that,

  276. hey, I know pretty much

  277. what's going to happen.

  278. You know,

  279. a surprise now and then is fine,

  280. but most of the time we like

  281. when we know and have stability.

  282. And part of that is in our ritual

  283. and even our worship sometimes.

  284. It can become just stiff

  285. and it becomes just something you do.

  286. You know,

  287. it's like coming to church

  288. on Sunday morning.

  289. Well,

  290. we're going to come

  291. and Brother Miles

  292. is going to lead us

  293. in some songs.

  294. You know,

  295. you'll sing them.

  296. You might belt them out.

  297. You might just sit there

  298. and mumble to yourself

  299. whatever level you're at.

  300. You know,

  301. it's like,

  302. just to remind you,

  303. you're supposed to take

  304. a joyful noise

  305. unto the Lord.

  306. Amen?

  307. Everybody sings well?

  308. You know,

  309. joyful noise is a requirement

  310. because that joyful noise

  311. is something that ought to come

  312. from the heart out.

  313. When we sing,

  314. it's not just process.

  315. When we sing songs

  316. to begin with,

  317. but you know,

  318. it's easy for that

  319. to become process,

  320. become ritual.

  321. And we get caught up,

  322. this is my expectation

  323. of church.

  324. This is the expectation

  325. that we think.

  326. But I want you to know

  327. that it has more involved

  328. than just the expectation

  329. of the repetition.

  330. The children of Israel

  331. were to do this

  332. every year.

  333. And very easily,

  334. it could become

  335. just something we do

  336. instead of something

  337. that has a meaning,

  338. something that has an impact.

  339. Because God didn't give this

  340. to the children of Israel

  341. for no reason.

  342. It was a memorial,

  343. it was to remind them

  344. to slow down

  345. and to consider

  346. what God has done.

  347. And even today,

  348. I think we need to be careful

  349. we don't fall into ritual.

  350. Now there's nothing wrong

  351. with having order

  352. and things put together,

  353. but we've got to be careful

  354. that in our mind

  355. it isn't just something we do,

  356. but it's something

  357. that we come to honor

  358. the one who came

  359. and died for our sin.

  360. Because the Passover

  361. was reminding them

  362. that there was a Redeemer.

  363. That God cared.

  364. And we're going to see here

  365. in this,

  366. even in this,

  367. the picture that is there

  368. because it's not just

  369. a ritual of the event,

  370. it was so much more.

  371. Because it is a picture

  372. of what was about to happen

  373. before their eyes

  374. just hours from then.

  375. Israel back in

  376. Exodus chapter 12,

    Exodus 12 chapter mention

  377. when they celebrated

  378. the Passover,

  379. there was going to be

  380. some major things

  381. happening in just a few hours.

  382. They were going to be set free.

  383. When we consider this event

  384. from Mark chapter 14,

    Mark 14 chapter mention

  385. in a matter of a few hours,

  386. there was going to be

  387. some major changes.

  388. Things were going to

  389. alter history.

  390. Because when Jesus

  391. went to the cross,

  392. He set us free from sin.

  393. There was a big thing

  394. going to take place.

  395. The Passover pictures

  396. those things,

  397. but notice this feast,

  398. there was a focus

  399. about this feast.

  400. The focus was centered

  401. about the Lamb.

  402. The Lamb was the central picture

  403. of the Passover.

  404. Everything we read here

  405. in Exodus focuses on it.

  406. You know, look at verse 3

  407. for a moment.

  408. Because as we look here

  409. in verse 3,

  410. I want you to see

  411. and grab a hold of this

  412. this morning.

  413. Because here in verse 3,

  414. right at the end of the verse,

  415. it says,

  416. a Lamb for a house.

  417. I want you to see

  418. this progression.

  419. It goes from a Lamb.

  420. Then we find in verse 4

  421. it goes to the Lamb.

  422. And then you go on down

  423. into verse 5,

  424. and it makes it

  425. a little different

  426. because it says,

  427. your Lamb.

  428. Your Lamb.

  429. It moves from,

  430. you might say,

  431. a generic idea

  432. of a Savior

  433. to the identification

  434. of a Savior

  435. to the reality

  436. that you need

  437. a personal relationship

  438. with the Savior.

  439. You know,

  440. that's a progression

  441. we even make today

  442. when it comes to

  443. our relationship with God

  444. because we first have

  445. to recognize that He is.

  446. To recognize that God

  447. and God is there

  448. and not just that

  449. Jesus is the Savior.

  450. You know,

  451. there's many people today

  452. that would tell you

  453. that yes,

  454. Jesus is the Savior.

  455. But if you stop there,

  456. you stop short

  457. because Jesus

  458. isn't just the Savior.

  459. He needs to be

  460. your Savior.

  461. Just as when they

  462. celebrated the Passover,

  463. it had to be

  464. your Lamb.

  465. The benefits

  466. didn't happen

  467. because your neighbors

  468. did it.

  469. The benefit happened

  470. because

  471. you did it.

  472. your participation

  473. in that.

  474. It would have been kept,

  475. this Lamb was kept

  476. for four days

  477. before it was killed

  478. and it was intentional

  479. because also you'll find

  480. that,

  481. I don't know about you,

  482. but it's pretty clear

  483. that this is something

  484. that the family kept,

  485. the Lamb,

  486. close to them

  487. to observe it

  488. for four days.

  489. Now,

  490. I don't know about you,

  491. but when something

  492. hangs out at your house,

  493. especially,

  494. you know,

  495. like a one-year-old Lamb,

  496. everybody thinks

  497. it looks kind of cute,

  498. you know,

  499. and it's kind of cuddly

  500. and, you know,

  501. everything looks

  502. kind of good,

  503. but the problem is here

  504. that it begins

  505. to form an attachment.

  506. It's amazing.

  507. Have you ever taken,

  508. brought a pet home

  509. and how quick

  510. do you attach

  511. to something?

  512. An animal

  513. around the house?

  514. I mean,

  515. you attach to it,

  516. especially the children.

  517. And here they have

  518. this Lamb

  519. that's close

  520. and they're observing

  521. and it becomes

  522. real personal

  523. on the fourth day

  524. when the Lamb

  525. had to be slain.

  526. It became very personal,

  527. the reality

  528. of what was happening

  529. because this Lamb

  530. was important.

  531. It pictured for us

  532. a personal Savior.

  533. Jesus Christ

  534. is not just a Savior.

  535. He's not just

  536. one among many.

  537. He is the Savior

  538. and His work

  539. is only accomplished

  540. in your life

  541. when He is your Savior.

  542. Today,

  543. I encourage you

  544. to make sure

  545. that He is your Savior.

  546. not a ritual Savior,

  547. not one that just

  548. goes through process

  549. of salvation,

  550. but one that's

  551. a reality

  552. that says

  553. He is my salvation.

  554. He is the one

  555. that paid the price

  556. for my sin.

  557. Because we see here

  558. that the Lamb

  559. also in Exodus

    Exodus 12:5

  560. chapter 12,

  561. verse 5,

  562. speaks specifically

  563. about this Lamb

  564. being without blemish.

  565. You know,

  566. this Lamb here

  567. that we're going to

  568. look at

  569. as a celebration

  570. as they prepare,

  571. everything was pointing

  572. to the one

  573. they were going

  574. to celebrate it with.

  575. When the disciples

  576. said,

  577. where are we going

  578. to make that

  579. we can celebrate

  580. their Passover

  581. with you,

  582. your Passover,

  583. you know,

  584. the one that is there

  585. at points to Christ.

  586. You know,

  587. we see here

  588. that Jesus

  589. was without blemish.

  590. 1 John chapter 3

    1 John 3 chapter mention

  591. and verse 5

  592. it says,

  593. and you know

  594. that He was manifest

  595. to take away our sins

  596. and in Him is

  597. no sin.

  598. I want you to understand

  599. Jesus was without sin.

  600. He paid a price

  601. for you and I

  602. that He did not deserve.

  603. The picture of the Lamb

  604. in the Passover,

  605. the Passover Lamb

  606. took something

  607. that it did not deserve.

  608. It was a substitute

  609. for you.

  610. The Lamb was not guilty

  611. of anything,

  612. but yet the Lamb

  613. paid the price.

  614. They were to take

  615. the blood of this slain Lamb

  616. and it was to be placed

  617. on the doorposts

  618. of the house.

  619. The family was to eat

  620. the meal

  621. and remain in the house

  622. until morning.

  623. What a wonderful depiction

  624. of what the shed blood

  625. of Jesus Christ does.

  626. You know,

  627. the only thing

  628. that will keep you

  629. from the judgment of God

  630. is the blood

  631. of Jesus Christ.

  632. When they put the blood

  633. on the doorpost,

  634. the Bible tells us

  635. that the death angel

  636. passed over.

  637. That death angel

  638. was God's judgment.

  639. The plagues in Egypt

  640. were God's judgment

  641. upon the gods of Egypt.

  642. That was that final judgment

  643. where they lost

  644. the firstborn.

  645. That firstborn

  646. would be killed

  647. if they did not have blood

  648. on the doorpost.

  649. You know,

  650. we see here

  651. that it was the judgment

  652. of God.

  653. You know,

  654. look over into Romans

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  655. chapter 5 for a moment.

  656. Romans 5 and verse 9

  657. says,

  658. As much more than

  659. being now justified

  660. by what?

  661. His blood.

  662. We shall be saved

  663. from what?

  664. Wrath

  665. through Him.

  666. God's wrath

  667. is God's judgment.

  668. If He is your Savior,

  669. His shed blood

  670. now allows God

  671. to move His judgment

  672. from you.

  673. He literally

  674. passes over

  675. your sin

  676. because your sin

  677. has been covered

  678. under the blood

  679. of Jesus Christ.

  680. Because notice here,

  681. the lamb is to be

  682. roasted with fire.

  683. Fire here represents

  684. God's judgment.

  685. Just as God's judgment

  686. was poured out

  687. upon Egypt,

  688. God's judgment

  689. was taken upon

  690. the lamb.

  691. God's judgment

  692. was upon the lamb.

  693. And while we could

  694. speak so much more

  695. about this Passover lamb,

  696. it's a clear reminder

  697. that only by what

  698. Jesus Christ did for you

  699. that God's judgment

  700. can be turned away.

  701. You know,

  702. we see this picture

  703. of the lamb

  704. that God's judgment

  705. was there.

  706. You know,

  707. look over to 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  708. chapter 5.

  709. 2 Corinthians chapter 5

    2 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  710. and verse 21

  711. says,

  712. So He hath made Him

  713. to be sin for us

  714. who knew no sin

  715. that we may be made

  716. the righteousness

  717. of God

  718. in Him.

  719. You know,

  720. it's only by what

  721. the lamb represents

  722. and what the lamb did,

  723. what the lamb took,

  724. and we see this picture

  725. from the Old Testament

  726. now being moved

  727. literally

  728. into the new

  729. because it now changes

  730. because the lamb

  731. is no longer

  732. the little critter

  733. that runs around.

  734. The lamb was walking

  735. among them.

  736. John chapter 1

    John 1 chapter mention

  737. talks about John the Baptist

  738. when he saw Jesus

  739. and said,

  740. Behold,

  741. what?

  742. The lamb of God

  743. that taketh away

  744. the sin

  745. of the world.

  746. Jesus

  747. is the lamb

  748. in the Passover.

  749. And we're going to see

  750. this play through

  751. as we begin looking here.

  752. So as the disciples

  753. asked Jesus

  754. about this very important event,

  755. look back into Mark chapter 14

    Mark 14 chapter mention

  756. as we get back

  757. where we started this morning

  758. because let's look at this again

  759. in light of that.

  760. It says,

  761. In the first day of unleavened bread,

  762. when they killed the Passover,

  763. His disciples said unto Him,

  764. Where wilt thou that we go

  765. and prepare that thou mayest

  766. eat the Passover?

  767. You know,

  768. they understood this Passover,

  769. this last Passover

  770. that was going to be celebrated.

  771. And you say,

  772. Well, there's been people

  773. that have celebrated

  774. the Passover since then,

  775. but you know,

  776. the Passover since then

  777. have not had the meaning.

  778. Because everything

  779. in the Passover

  780. has been fulfilled.

  781. Jews continue to celebrate

  782. the Passover today.

  783. You know what they do?

  784. They miss the obvious.

  785. They miss the picture

  786. of who Jesus Christ is,

  787. that He was the Lamb.

  788. And we're going to find here

  789. as we go through this

  790. in the coming weeks

  791. that Jesus takes this feast

  792. to the Passover memorial

  793. and takes it

  794. and refocuses it

  795. to a different,

  796. slightly different memorial.

  797. It's really kind of

  798. the same memorial.

  799. It's just you're looking at it

  800. from a different perspective.

  801. Because Jesus takes

  802. and changes it

  803. because it's His.

  804. Because it moves

  805. from looking forward,

  806. because here,

  807. we're going to talk

  808. about this next week

  809. as He institutes

  810. the Lord's Supper.

  811. The Lord's Supper

  812. is not about looking back.

  813. The Lord's Supper

  814. is about looking forward.

  815. It's a memorial

  816. for what's been accomplished

  817. but what He's going to do.

  818. It helps keep us focused

  819. and reminded.

  820. Just like the Passover

  821. kept the Jews focused

  822. on the Messiah

  823. that was to come.

  824. The Lord's Supper

  825. to a believer

  826. is a time that we stop

  827. and we reflect

  828. and consider

  829. what Christ has done for you.

  830. It's the reason

  831. we don't take it

  832. just flippantly.

  833. We'll talk about that

  834. in the coming weeks.

  835. That's a whole other

  836. one to get into here

  837. on that.

  838. I want you to understand

  839. that God's judgment

  840. required that the lamb

  841. be killed

  842. in order for Him

  843. to pass over.

  844. Look back over

  845. into Hebrews chapter 9.

    Hebrews 9 chapter mention

  846. Hebrews chapter 9

    Hebrews 9 chapter mention

  847. and we see here

  848. this.

  849. It says,

  850. And almost all things

  851. are by the law

  852. purged with blood.

  853. Without shedding of blood

  854. is no remission.

  855. I want you to understand

  856. that the blood required

  857. the blood was required

  858. in the sacrifice.

  859. Everything they did

  860. pictured what Jesus Christ

  861. did for us.

  862. When we see this picture here

  863. that the shedding of blood

  864. was required,

  865. you know,

  866. people today

  867. don't like the idea

  868. the blood is needed.

  869. You know,

  870. we sang about the blood

  871. this morning,

  872. you know,

  873. and you think about

  874. those words,

  875. you know,

  876. hopefully you can look back

  877. at what you sang this morning

  878. and said,

  879. you know,

  880. that holds a little

  881. different punch

  882. because the blood of Jesus

  883. was essential

  884. for our salvation.

  885. But let's look here

  886. at the rest of this.

  887. Let's see what happens here.

  888. Notice in verse 13,

  889. And He sendeth forth

  890. two of His disciples,

  891. and we already know

  892. that that was John and Peter.

  893. But look at the lodging problem

  894. and how He's going to solve this.

  895. Because look at what

  896. Jesus tells them here

  897. because this is one

  898. of those passages

  899. is it's like,

  900. why did Jesus

  901. so coy about

  902. His statement here?

  903. Because this is really

  904. kind of ambiguous.

  905. I mean,

  906. this is worse

  907. than getting directions

  908. from some people

  909. where they tell you,

  910. well,

  911. if you go down here

  912. to the stop sign

  913. and you go right

  914. and then you turn left

  915. at the big tree

  916. and then that'll take you

  917. down the street

  918. where you'll see

  919. the gas station

  920. and then you turn right

  921. at the gas station,

  922. that takes you down

  923. to the mall

  924. you know.

  925. I always love telling people,

  926. well, you go west

  927. and they'll look at you

  928. like, what?

  929. You know.

  930. But I want you to see here

  931. that Jesus could have gave

  932. very specific

  933. directions to this house.

  934. But I want you to see

  935. what He did in its place.

  936. And I think there's a reason

  937. we can discern from Scripture

  938. why Jesus

  939. presented it to His disciples

  940. this way.

  941. But notice what happens here.

  942. And He saith in them,

  943. notice He says

  944. in verse 13,

  945. Go ye into the city.

  946. I'm pretty sure

  947. John and Peter

  948. were probably like,

  949. okay,

  950. we're heading

  951. that direction.

  952. And then Jesus,

  953. look what Jesus tells them.

  954. He says,

  955. And there shall you meet

  956. a man bearing

  957. a pitcher of water.

  958. Follow him.

  959. Now this is one of those,

  960. I guarantee you,

  961. that we kind of miss

  962. this cultural element here.

  963. Because understanding

  964. some Jewish culture

  965. here is critical.

  966. Because to us,

  967. how would He figure out

  968. which guy it was?

  969. You know,

  970. how many people

  971. in a city the size

  972. of Jerusalem at the time

  973. would be carrying water?

  974. You know?

  975. I mean,

  976. you could think,

  977. man,

  978. there could be lots and lots.

  979. It would be like

  980. going downtown

  981. and then Lincoln

  982. and saying,

  983. you know,

  984. in our minds,

  985. you know,

  986. go downtown

  987. and find somebody

  988. carrying a water bottle

  989. and follow them.

  990. you would look at them

  991. like you are crazy.

  992. But when we understand

  993. culturally here

  994. what Jesus is telling them,

  995. the uniqueness

  996. of what He's saying,

  997. it helps us grasp

  998. because in the day

  999. of Jesus,

  1000. there was something

  1001. that happened.

  1002. Number one,

  1003. men didn't carry

  1004. pitchers of water.

  1005. Women carried

  1006. pitchers of water.

  1007. If a man

  1008. was to carry water,

  1009. it would be

  1010. in a skin.

  1011. You know,

  1012. kind of like

  1013. a soft-sided

  1014. water jug.

  1015. That was the normal

1016. for a man to carry.

  1017. A woman would carry

  1018. a pitcher of water.

  1019. Now,

  1020. so when Jesus said,

  1021. you're going to,

1022. when you enter the city,

  1023. you're going to see

  1024. a man,

1025. a servant in this case,

  1026. carrying a pitcher

  1027. of water.

  1028. So,

  1029. understanding that

  1030. changes what Jesus

  1031. is telling them,

  1032. isn't it?

  1033. Because this man,

  1034. even though he's

  1035. going to be one

  1036. among many,

  1037. is going to have

  1038. something unique

  1039. that would have

  1040. stood out in the

  1041. crowd to them.

  1042. It was something

  1043. that they would have

  1044. looked at and said,

  1045. yep,

  1046. I'm pretty sure

  1047. he's it

  1048. because he's

  1049. carrying a pitcher

  1050. of water.

  1051. But we see here,

  1052. Jesus tells them

  1053. to follow this man

1054. with a pitcher of water

  1055. to the place,

  1056. he says,

  1057. wherever he goes,

  1058. ye shall go in

  1059. and say to the

1060. good men of the house.

  1061. You know,

  1062. we see here

1063. as Jesus is telling them,

  1064. he says,

  1065. follow the servant

  1066. and then go on

  1067. into the house

  1068. and we have to

  1069. understand this

  1070. is the house

  1071. of the day.

  1072. You would have

  1073. the outer court

  1074. and you had

  1075. the different areas

  1076. of the house

  1077. and this man

  1078. having a large

  1079. upper room

  1080. that was fully

  1081. furnished.

  1082. We know some things.

  1083. He probably has

  1084. a man of resource

  1085. so it probably

  1086. wasn't a small

  1087. house.

  1088. Number one,

  1089. he had servants.

  1090. He had all these

  1091. different things

  1092. taking place.

  1093. But we see here

  1094. that they're supposed

  1095. to go in

  1096. and ask

  1097. or almost

  1098. instruct the man.

  1099. It says,

  1100. the master

  1101. say it there

  1102. in verse 14,

  1103. where is the guest

  1104. chamber

  1105. where I shall

  1106. eat the Passover

  1107. with my disciples?

  1108. In verse 15,

  1109. he will show you

  1110. a large upper room

  1111. furnished and prepared

  1112. there make ready

  1113. for us.

  1114. You know,

  1115. here Jesus gives

  1116. these instructions

  1117. to his disciples.

  1118. He says,

  1119. hey guys,

  1120. take this

  1121. and go into town

  1122. and follow this guy

  1123. holding a pitcher

  1124. of water

  1125. and you follow him

  1126. to whatever house

  1127. he goes to.

  1128. Go in,

  1129. talk to the master

  1130. and say,

  1131. hey,

  1132. Jesus said

  1133. that you have

  1134. a room for him.

  1135. You know,

  1136. and we're going

  1137. to see here

  1138. because I believe

  1139. Jesus already

  1140. had this all prepared

  1141. and arranged

  1142. with this man.

  1143. But why would

  1144. Jesus be so vague

  1145. in his instruction?

  1146. You know,

  1147. it relates to what

  1148. we talked about

  1149. last week.

  1150. What was Judas

  1151. up to?

  1152. Judas was looking

  1153. for a convenient

  1154. time

  1155. to sell Jesus out.

  1156. Jesus didn't,

  1157. who was standing

  1158. there when Jesus

  1159. gave the disciples

  1160. the instruction.

  1161. Judas was.

  1162. So Jesus looks

  1163. at Peter and John

  1164. and says,

  1165. go into the city,

  1166. follow the guy

  1167. with the pitcher

  1168. on his head,

1169. follow him to his house,

1170. and then we'll meet you

  1171. there a little later.

  1172. Judas would have had

  1173. no clue

  1174. where that was.

  1175. Because let's face it,

  1176. Jesus reveals

  1177. his knowing

  1178. of those things,

  1179. his omniscience,

  1180. for he knew

  1181. what was taking place.

  1182. He knew the heart

  1183. of Judas.

  1184. He knew what was

  1185. already put in place

  1186. over here.

  1187. He knew that

  1188. this man's servant

  1189. was going to be

  1190. carrying a pitcher

  1191. of water,

1192. which is one of those

  1193. that's just kind of,

  1194. I think,

  1195. just sort of,

  1196. it's what took place.

  1197. And Jesus said,

  1198. hey,

  1199. this is what's

  1200. taking place,

1201. I'll take and use that

  1202. because it's unique

  1203. to get my disciples

  1204. to his house.

  1205. You know,

  1206. I think as I read this,

1207. one thing I was thinking

  1208. about is the disciples

1209. and the amount of faith

  1210. that they had

  1211. in his instruction.

  1212. I mean,

  1213. most of the time

  1214. we find that

  1215. when Jesus,

1216. if somebody would tell you

  1217. something like this,

1218. I think most of us

1219. would just look at him

  1220. strange.

1221. But we have no record,

  1222. this wasn't a test

  1223. of their faith,

  1224. but Jesus told them

  1225. and they just followed.

  1226. Their faith was already

  1227. in Christ.

1228. We asked him where to go

  1229. and he told us,

  1230. so let's go.

  1231. You know,

  1232. let's get busy,

  1233. let's do what we're

  1234. supposed to do.

  1235. You know,

  1236. they played,

1237. they had a lot of faith

  1238. in the instructions

  1239. as they went,

  1240. even though Jesus

  1241. didn't reveal

  1242. all the details,

  1243. but what he did

  1244. is he gave them

  1245. exactly what they needed

  1246. to accomplish the task.

  1247. He gave them

  1248. exactly what was needed

  1249. to that.

  1250. You know,

1251. and I think this applies

  1252. in our lives today.

1253. Because if you ever know,

  1254. sometimes people say,

  1255. well,

  1256. I'll serve the Lord

  1257. if God gives me

  1258. all the details.

  1259. If God lays everything

  1260. out in detail,

  1261. I'll serve him.

  1262. I want everything

  1263. laid out.

  1264. I don't want

  1265. any unknowns.

  1266. But you know what?

  1267. Some days we need

  1268. to trust God

  1269. just like Peter

  1270. and John did

  1271. to say Jesus

  1272. has given us

  1273. what we need

  1274. to accomplish

1275. what he set us out

  1276. to do.

  1277. And that Jesus

1278. will fill in the difference.

  1279. You know,

1280. over the course of my life,

  1281. I've learned one thing.

1282. Sometimes as I look back,

  1283. I'm glad I didn't know

1284. what was going to happen

  1285. beforehand.

1286. Because what we think is,

  1287. well,

  1288. if it's bad,

  1289. I won't do it.

  1290. If it's good,

  1291. we'll do it.

  1292. It's like,

  1293. that's not the way

  1294. life works.

  1295. You know,

1296. the same is true today.

  1297. We don't always know

  1298. all the details,

1299. but we have to trust

1300. him with what we know.

  1301. We confidently know

  1302. that he's already

  1303. has the details

  1304. worked out.

  1305. I mean,

  1306. what an amazing thing

  1307. to realize that Jesus,

1308. when he told the disciples,

  1309. he said,

  1310. guys,

  1311. I already have

  1312. all the details

  1313. worked out.

  1314. Look how all that

  1315. came together.

  1316. Jesus said,

  1317. I have a place.

  1318. It's already prepared.

  1319. It's furnished.

1320. All they had to do

1321. was finish preparing the meal.

1322. They had all the furniture

  1323. set up.

  1324. They had everything ready.

  1325. God already had

  1326. the rest of it

  1327. in place.

1328. What they had to do

1329. was trust him by faith

  1330. to take action

  1331. on what they knew

1332. they were supposed to do.

  1333. Now,

  1334. we often quote

  1335. a very familiar passage

1336. back in Proverbs chapter 3.

    Proverbs 3 chapter mention

  1337. You know,

  1338. Proverbs 3,

1339. and it tells us this

  1340. in verses 5 and 6.

  1341. It says,

  1342. Trust in the Lord

  1343. with all thine heart

  1344. and lean not

  1345. on thine own understanding

  1346. and all thy ways

  1347. acknowledge him.

  1348. And now look at

  1349. that last part.

1350. And he shall do what?

  1351. Direct thy paths.

  1352. We hear it,

  1353. but sometimes

  1354. we don't process it.

  1355. Peter and John

  1356. were living this verse.

  1357. Consider what they did.

  1358. They weren't leaning

  1359. on their own understanding.

  1360. Their own understanding

  1361. is Jesus,

  1362. you know,

  1363. you could have

  1364. given us an address.

1365. It would be a little easier.

  1366. They said,

  1367. No,

  1368. Jesus gave us

  1369. what we needed

  1370. to accomplish the task

  1371. according to what

  1372. he has set out

  1373. and he's going to

  1374. direct our path.

  1375. Think of how God

  1376. directed the path

  1377. of Peter

  1378. and John

  1379. that day.

  1380. they found

  1381. the man

  1382. with the picture

  1383. and he took

  1384. them directly

  1385. to where they

  1386. needed to be.

  1387. Why were they

  1388. where they were

  1389. supposed to be?

  1390. Because they were

  1391. obedient to what

  1392. they knew.

  1393. They were obedient

  1394. to what God

  1395. had told them.

1396. They went to the place

  1397. where everything

  1398. was furnished

  1399. and prepared.

  1400. You know,

  1401. this implies

  1402. that Jesus

  1403. had already arranged

  1404. to meet there

  1405. even though

  1406. he hadn't disclosed

  1407. it to his disciples.

  1408. That's another

  1409. important thing

  1410. to realize

  1411. that God

  1412. is working

  1413. in circles

  1414. and things

  1415. bigger than yourself.

  1416. God's got

  1417. details worked

  1418. out that are

  1419. beyond us.

  1420. But he's got

  1421. things fitting

  1422. into place

  1423. that's going

  1424. to benefit us.

  1425. God works

  1426. through those

  1427. details.

  1428. It was furnished

  1429. and prepared.

  1430. You know,

  1431. but why would

  1432. Jesus keep this

  1433. from the disciples?

  1434. You know,

  1435. and we understood

  1436. what was happening

  1437. here.

  1438. That Jesus

  1439. wanted to eat

  1440. the Passover

  1441. with his disciples

  1442. and where it

  1443. was going to be

  1444. where I shall

  1445. eat the Passover

  1446. with my disciples.

  1447. Look down

  1448. in verse 14

  1449. here in our text.

  1450. It says,

  1451. well,

  1452. it's what Jesus

  1453. says,

  1454. where the guest

  1455. chamber,

  1456. where I shall

  1457. eat the Passover

  1458. with my disciples.

  1459. You know,

  1460. we see here

  1461. Peter and John

  1462. went to Jerusalem

  1463. expecting

  1464. to find

  1465. what Jesus

  1466. had told them.

  1467. Seeing a man

  1468. with a water pitcher

  1469. followed him

  1470. to his house,

  1471. inquired to the

  1472. owner of the room,

  1473. finding it furnished

  1474. and prepared

  1475. and then making

  1476. the Passover

  1477. ready.

  1478. So I want you

  1479. to understand

  1480. they had some

  1481. things to do

  1482. other than just

  1483. having a prepared

  1484. and furnished room.

  1485. Their job

  1486. was to prepare

  1487. the meal

  1488. that was to come.

  1489. Part of that

  1490. preparation

  1491. was to kill

  1492. the lamb,

  1493. to roast it

  1494. with fire.

  1495. There were some

  1496. things that were

  1497. laid out for them.

  1498. The plan that

  1499. God had established

  1500. came to pass.

  1501. I want you to

  1502. understand this

  1503. morning that

  1504. God's plan

  1505. always

  1506. is fulfilled.

  1507. People may

  1508. try to thwart,

  1509. people might

  1510. try to ignore

  1511. God's plan

  1512. and what God's

  1513. purpose is,

  1514. but you know

  1515. what?

  1516. God is above

  1517. those things.

  1518. God says

  1519. what He promises

  1520. will come to pass.

  1521. He sets forth

  1522. the course

  1523. of history.

  1524. He sets forth

  1525. those things

  1526. in a way

  1527. that will be

  1528. beneficial

  1529. in the long

  1530. term

  1531. for us

  1532. and for those

  1533. who call upon

  1534. Him.

  1535. You know,

  1536. the plan that

  1537. God has established

  1538. is for our benefit

  1539. just like His

  1540. plan of salvation.

  1541. The Passover

  1542. was a picture

  1543. of His plan

  1544. of salvation

  1545. for me

  1546. and for you.

  1547. His plan

  1548. was about to

  1549. come to fruition.

  1550. As the disciples

  1551. were there

  1552. getting ready

  1553. to eat

  1554. the last

  1555. Passover,

  1556. His perfect

  1557. plan was

  1558. coming together.

  1559. You know,

  1560. look what the

  1561. apostle Paul

  1562. says.

  1563. Look over to

  1564. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  1565. chapter 5

  1566. for a moment.

  1567. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  1568. chapter 5.

  1569. You know,

  1570. here Paul's

  1571. talking about

  1572. some issues

  1573. of sin

  1574. in the church

  1575. and notice

  1576. what he says

  1577. as a believer

  1578. what we ought

  1579. to purge out.

  1580. He says,

  1581. Purge out

  1582. therefore the

  1583. old leaven

  1584. that ye may

  1585. be a new lump

  1586. as ye are

  1587. unleavened

  1588. for even

  1589. Christ our

  1590. Passover

  1591. is sacrificed

  1592. for us.

1593. in the old testament they had a lamb that took god's judgment upon him because of the shed blood

1594. of the lamb and today we have the lamb of god who shed his blood for you and me

1595. jesus is literally the fulfillment and is our passover lamb his shed blood allows god's

1596. judgment to pass over us it's by his sacrifice the blood that was shed for you that you

1597. and i can be saved when he's not just a lamb or he's not just the lamb but when he's your lamb

1598. you know first peter tells us this first peter chapter one says this but with the precious

1599. blood of christ as the lamb without blemish and without spot who verily fordain before the

1600. foundation of the world but was manifest in these last times for you

1601. who by him to believe in god that raised him up from the dead and gave him glory

1602. that your faith and hope might be in god you know the disciples were preparing the last passover that

1603. was going to picture the ultimate passover as we're going to look in the coming weeks

1604. about what takes place here at this passover but today just as that blood was applied for god's

1605. judgment to pass over in egypt it passed over those that acted in faith sometimes we miss the fact that

1606. it took a lot of faith to take a lamb something that had never been done before like this and put the

1607. blood and apply it on the doorpost of your house they had to act in faith that god's judgment was going to

1608. pass over them just like when we accept christ by faith when we trust in what he has done god's judgment

1609. then can pass over you and that's by no other than faith in what christ has done look at the end of

1610. that verse up there it says that your faith and hope might be where in god not in ritual

1611. not in form and function not in liturgies

1612. not even in history but that our faith is in god this morning the same is true

  1613. for you and i

1614. has there been a point in time when he moved from the reality of just being

1615. a savior to the savior

1616. but most importantly has he become

1617. your savior that's the critical part

  1618. to realize the need

  1619. to be your savior

1620. as heads are bowed and eyes are closed this morning i encourage you to consider

1621. what is jesus to you is he your savior if not i encourage you today this might be the day you

1622. call upon him as your savior if you've never

1623. understood never comprehended what was needed

1624. it's not by works of righteousness which we have done but it's by what he has accomplished

1625. and by putting our faith in him what about you today heavenly fathers we come before you this

1626. morning lord we just thank you and praise you for the picture and the reality that we can understand

1627. what you've done for us lord i pray if there's one here today

1628. that has not called upon you as their savior

1629. lord we can know about you but there's a difference when we have a connection with you as our savior

1630. lord i pray just work mightily upon each heart each life here today

1631. maybe we just need to slow down and really consider the reality and just to be thankful

1632. thankful for what you've done for us and lord we just ask it all in your precious name

1633. amen as heads are bowed and eyes are closed what about you today

  1634. you
