  1. All right, let's go ahead and take your Bibles this morning to Luke chapter 18.

    Luke 18 chapter mention

  2. Luke chapter 18 this morning is where we're going to kick off here.

    Luke 18 chapter mention

  3. We're going to be looking at more than a name.

  4. And we've been looking at unnamed people in Scripture who left an impact in eternity

  5. and then left those things.

  6. This morning is going to be a little different because we're going to talk about two people

  7. that we don't have a name, but we're going to talk about some opposites with no name.

  8. But this is one of the few that is an actual parable.

  9. But I think oftentimes Jesus, when he spoke in parables,

  10. was looking at things that actually had happened or things that had actually taken place.

  11. And I think that as we're going to look here this morning at these two individuals

  12. with no name and the impact and the things we can learn from it here.

  13. So Luke chapter 18, let's look here in verse 9 here this morning.

    Luke 18 chapter mention

  14. And it tells us this, it says,

  15. He spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves

  16. that they were righteous and despised others.

  17. You know, I think we can all agree that that happens sometimes.

  18. You know, sometimes there's people who think they're righteous and despise other people.

  19. And so let's look here, it says in verse 10,

  20. And two men went up into the temple to pray, and one a Pharisee and the other a publican.

  21. And the Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself,

  22. God, I thank thee that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers,

  23. or even as this publican.

  24. I fast twice in a week.

  25. I give tithes of all I possess.

  26. And the publican standing far off would not lift up so much his eyes into heaven,

  27. but smote upon his breast, saying, God, be merciful to me, a sinner.

  28. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other.

  29. For everyone that exalted himself shall be abased,

  30. and he that humbles himself shall be exalted.

  31. Let's pray.

  32. Heavenly Fathers, we just take a few moments here as we look at the two people

  33. represented in this passage this morning, Lord,

  34. of just the impact that they even have for us today.

  35. Lord, to have the right understanding and the right mindset towards you.

  36. And Lord, we pray that you just would stir our hearts and minds towards you

  37. even here this morning.

  38. And so let's give you all the praise and thanks and glory in Jesus' name.

  39. Amen.

  40. You know, the interesting thing is there's only one of you.

  41. Now, some of you might think that's a good thing.

  42. But God has made each of us unique.

  43. He's created us different.

  44. We look different.

  45. Our personalities are different.

  46. Our abilities are different.

  47. Our capacities are different.

  48. You know, even identical twins are really different in many ways.

  49. There's things and traits about them that are unique to them as an individual.

  50. And so each of us is very unique.

  51. And in this account here, Jesus tells about two unnamed men who were very different.

  52. You know?

  53. We could say that they were opposites.

  54. They were opposites in their approach to God.

  55. And as a result, their spiritual states were also opposite.

  56. Where they stood before God were total opposite because of how they came and presented themselves to Him.

  57. So we find first here this morning the contrasting motive.

  58. You know?

  59. The motives were different.

  60. You know?

  61. The contrasting motive.

  62. On the surface, this story begins.

  63. And we cannot judge the motives of the two men.

  64. They're just two unnamed men.

  65. And they were going to do the same thing.

  66. They were going down to the temple.

  67. They were headed there to do the same thing.

  68. And that's to pray.

  69. But while, you know, those watching that day would have known they were not the same occupation or religious stripe or indeed different,

  70. no one would be able to judge their motive initially.

  71. You know, think about what it says there.

  72. Look at verse 10 in our text.

  73. It says,

  74. Two men went up into the temple to pray, the one a Pharisee and the other a publican.

  75. You know?

  76. The reality is, as these two men entered the temple that day,

  77. they might have had outward appearances slightly different.

  78. But considering this, was there any way of knowing their motive?

  79. You know?

  80. It's just like this morning.

  81. There's people who come to church this morning.

  82. And, you know, people come for all sorts of different reasons.

  83. They can come in with a smile on their face.

  84. But you know what?

  85. The one thing we can't is understand the motive of a heart.

  86. Why does somebody do something?

  87. People do things for a lot of different reasons.

  88. You know, God's Word talks a lot about that.

  89. You know, how God looks upon the heart of an individual.

  90. God knows who you are inside.

  91. We can look on the outside.

  92. We can take some guesses.

  93. But you never truly understand the motive of a person.

  94. But God does.

  95. God looks upon the heart of an individual.

  96. Jesus here is revealing, not the outward.

  97. He's telling us that they're different.

  98. But this text that Jesus, this parable Jesus gives us, talks about two men.

  99. And he looks at not the outward.

  100. He looks at the motive.

  101. He looks behind the why.

  102. Why were they doing what they did?

  103. Because they were opposite in many ways.

  104. You know, one, there was a religious display that went on when they came.

  105. You know?

  106. The Pharisees of Jesus' day were known for their outward display of spirituality.

  107. So when it talks about the Pharisee coming in, everybody would have known who the Pharisee was.

  108. He would have had the right attire on.

  109. He would have been dressed looking the way that everybody expected.

  110. Everybody looked at him.

  111. And I guarantee you, when people judged on the outside, they said,

  112. there's a guy who has it all together before God.

  113. Looking on the outside, they thought everything was together.

  114. But the reality is, is that Jesus points out the inward deadness of the individual.

  115. Jesus calls them hypocrites.

  116. You know, take a look over in the Matthew for a moment.

  117. Look over to Matthew chapter 23.

    Matthew 23 chapter mention

  118. Matthew 23, look down at verse 25.

  119. Jesus looks at the Pharisees and he says this,

  120. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites,

  121. for you make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter,

  122. but within they are full of extortion and excess.

  123. Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup

  124. and platter that the outside of them may be clean also.

  125. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites,

  126. for you are like unto white sepulchers,

  127. which indeed appear beautiful outward,

  128. but are within full of dead men's bones and of uncleanness.

  129. Even so, ye also outward appearance,

  130. appear righteous unto men,

  131. but within you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

  132. You know, think about the reality of what Jesus is describing.

  133. He's basically describing something that is just hollow and empty.

  134. You know, there's nothing there.

  135. They look good,

  136. but when closely examined is not what it appears.

  137. You know, I remember a few years ago,

  138. I went to look at a vehicle,

  139. and you know, the thing about Nebraska and the Midwest,

  140. you know, you can go look at a vehicle

  141. and you start looking around on it

  142. and it looks pretty good.

  143. You know, especially, like,

  144. you can have a paint that looks really good.

  145. Have you ever went to look at a used vehicle

  146. and it looks really good,

  147. then you start poking on it?

  148. The paint looks good and then the paint goes in.

  149. Why is that?

  150. Because it may look good on the outside,

  151. but what's happened on the inside?

  152. The rust has gotten in there

  153. and decayed it from the inside going out.

  154. It still looks good on the outside,

  155. but there's no substance or nothing on the inside.

  156. You know, Jesus is giving that same illustration.

  157. You can have things that look good,

  158. but it doesn't mean they are.

  159. And tell it when we begin to examine.

  160. Because today, many work hard to try to cover up

  161. what's going on on the inside.

  162. You know, there's a lot of people who work hard

  163. to look good on the outside.

  164. Just as this Pharisee wanted,

  165. spent a lot of time trying to look good.

  166. Trying to make sure he measured up

  167. to all the things that were expected.

  168. But the reality is,

  169. is that Jeremiah the prophet described it this way.

  170. He says,

  171. The heart is deceitful above all things,

  172. and desperately wicked.

  173. Who can know it?

  174. There's a religious display from one that happened.

  175. And then we have the opposite.

  176. We have a repentant desire of the other individual.

  177. You know, whenever we find the word publican in Scripture,

  178. it's almost always linked with the word sinner.

  179. You know, it's one of those words

  180. that is always tied together in that.

  181. You know, publicans were the tax collectors.

  182. You know, everybody's favorite.

  183. You know?

  184. It's funny how certain things pass the test of time.

  185. Whenever you hear somebody,

  186. I'm a tax collector,

  187. no matter what they are,

  188. nobody seems to like them.

  189. You know?

  190. It's kind of like,

  191. you have a job that people don't like.

  192. You know?

  193. Because you're the person you don't want to see.

  194. You know?

  195. Today we have a fancy thing.

  196. We call them assessors, you know?

  197. But really what they're doing is assessing things

  198. so they can collect money, you know?

  199. And you get that little slip in the mail every year

  200. of somebody where somebody's come around, you know?

  201. And so we all have that same thought

  202. when it comes to tax collectors, don't we?

  203. You know?

  204. Even today, because,

  205. but even in Jesus' day,

  206. they were known for their deception

  207. and their thievery.

  208. They generally,

  209. many of them would cheat the people

  210. to pad their own pocket.

  211. In other words,

  212. they would overtax to be able to get

  213. their own pockets lined.

  214. They were there.

  215. They were despised and hated

  216. by the people.

  217. They were considered the worst

  218. of the worst.

  219. And now we find this unnamed publican

  220. was not going to the temple

  221. to show off his religious zeal.

  222. You know,

  223. his only possible motive

  224. would have been to repent

  225. of his wickedness.

  226. You know,

  227. we see these two that walked in that day,

  228. these two unnamed individuals,

  229. totally different, don't we?

  230. Their purpose

  231. and their reasoning

  232. for being there

  233. were two totally

  234. opposite ends of the spectrum.

  235. It's not what people

  236. perceived them being there,

  237. but it's what God saw

  238. when they were there.

  239. Because this unnamed publican,

  240. this unnamed tax collector,

  241. was not there in the temple

  242. trying to impress somebody.

  243. You know,

  244. the Pharisee came

  245. with all the right religious garb,

  246. all the right language,

  247. all the right things.

  248. He was there to let everybody know,

  249. I'm religious.

  250. But this publican,

  251. this unnamed publican,

  252. this unnamed tax collector

  253. came that day.

  254. He wasn't concerned

  255. with what other people saw.

  256. Matter of fact,

  257. most people probably avoided him

  258. as he walked in.

  259. You know the routine.

  260. It's like,

  261. okay,

  262. there they are.

  263. I'm going to go this way.

  264. We find this individual

  265. came,

  266. his motive was there

  267. because he was there

  268. to confess who he was

  269. before God who already knew.

  270. You know,

  271. he wasn't trying to cover up

  272. his faults

  273. or make himself look better,

  274. but he knew

  275. that he needed forgiveness.

  276. You know,

  277. another unnamed person

  278. in Scripture

  279. was one that was

  280. a rich young ruler

  281. who came to Jesus

  282. in Mark chapter 10.

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  283. It says this

  284. in verse 17 of Mark 10.

  285. It says,

  286. And when he had gone forth

  287. into the way,

  288. there came one running

  289. and kneeled down

  290. and asked him,

  291. Good Master,

  292. what shall I do

  293. that I may inherit

  294. eternal life?

  295. You know,

  296. this young man

  297. wanted to go to heaven.

  298. He wanted to add

  299. some religion

  300. to his life.

  301. He ended up,

  302. however,

  303. walking away sad

  304. and grieved in his heart

  305. because he was unwilling

  306. to turn from himself

  307. to the Lord.

  308. He said,

  309. I want this,

  310. but I want it on my terms.

  311. Motive makes a difference

  312. because I want you

  313. to understand

  314. that Christianity

  315. is not just a religion

  316. of regimen or rules.

  317. It's a relationship

  318. with the Savior.

  319. You know,

  320. the inside of an individual

  321. makes a difference

  322. in what's taking place.

  323. You know,

  324. look over to Romans chapter 8

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  325. for a moment

  326. because when you get saved,

  327. there's something

  328. that takes place

  329. in an individual.

  330. The Bible tells us

  331. that the Spirit

  332. of God

  333. comes and dwells

  334. within us.

  335. Romans 8,

    Romans 8:15

  336. verse 15 says,

  337. For you have not received

  338. the spirit of bondage

  339. again to fear,

  340. but you have received

  341. the spirit of adoption

  342. where we cry,

  343. Abba, Father.

  344. The Spirit itself

  345. bears witness

  346. with our spirit,

  347. and we are the children

  348. of God

  349. and if children

  350. then heirs,

  351. heirs of God

  352. and joint heirs

  353. with Christ.

  354. You know,

  355. that's a whole different

  356. dynamic, isn't it?

  357. And we see that

  358. being played out.

  359. We see the comparison

  360. mistake.

  361. We have that contrasting motive

  362. but also

  363. a comparison mistake

  364. because as we see

  365. the Pharisee

  366. comes and compares

  367. himself

  368. to the publican.

  369. You know,

  370. it's not hard

  371. to see ourselves,

  372. our own tendency

  373. to compare ourselves

  374. with others,

  375. is it?

  376. You know,

  377. Peter also struggled

  378. with comparing himself

  379. with others

  380. after Jesus told him

  381. that if he loved him

  382. he'd be willing

  383. to commit his life

  384. to serving him.

  385. It would cost

  386. Peter's suffering.

  387. It would cost him

  388. something in his life.

  389. You know,

  390. John 21,

    John 21:19

  391. verse 19

  392. says this,

  393. And he spake,

  394. he signifying

  395. by what death

  396. he should glorify God

  397. and when he had spoken this

  398. he said unto him

  399. follow me.

  400. Then Peter turned about

  401. seeing the disciple

  402. whom Jesus loved following

  403. which also leaned

  404. on his breast

  405. at supper

  406. and said,

  407. Lord,

  408. which is he

  409. that betrayeth thee?

  410. And Peter seeing him

  411. saith to Jesus,

  412. Lord,

  413. what shall this man do?

  414. You know,

  415. here Peter is,

  416. he's not concerned

  417. with where he is.

  418. He's worried about

  419. what John's going to be,

  420. happened to John too.

  421. You know,

  422. he's comparing,

  423. you know,

  424. is mine going to be

  425. better than his?

  426. You know,

  427. we're easy to get caught up

  428. in comparison

  429. of these things

  430. and we find here

  431. that Peter makes

  432. no argument

  433. and seems to understand

  434. and agree with Jesus

  435. that he is willing

  436. to die for the Lord

  437. and you know,

  438. history records

  439. that he did,

  440. but immediately

  441. upon hearing Christ's word

  442. predicting his martyrdom

  443. he falls to the temptation

  444. and comparison.

  445. Well,

  446. if I'm going to have

  447. this happen,

  448. what's going to happen

  449. to them?

  450. You know,

  451. we need to understand,

  452. we need to know

  453. where we are

  454. with God.

  455. The response

  456. of Jesus here

  457. is classic

  458. and well-heeded

  459. for us today.

  460. You know,

  461. we need to quit

  462. comparing,

  463. you know.

  464. John 21

    John 21:22

  465. verse 22

  466. says this,

  467. and it said,

  468. Jesus answered Peter

  469. this way,

  470. if I will

  471. that he tarry

  472. till I come,

  473. what is that to thee?

  474. Follow thou me.

  475. In other words,

  476. he says,

  477. what I'm doing

  478. in their life

  479. is between me

  480. and them.

  481. What's it to you

  482. with what's going on?

  483. It's not your decision.

  484. It's not your impact.

  485. It's who are you

  486. between you

  487. and me?

  488. You know,

  489. we find here

  490. that the first comes up,

  491. you know,

  492. the Pharisee

  493. has a very self-centered prayer.

  494. You know?

  495. Now notice something,

  496. and look back in our text,

  497. look in chapter 18,

  498. look at verse 11.

  499. Because I think

  500. this is important

  501. as you read the scripture,

  502. this is there

  503. with them little phrases

  504. that I think are important.

  505. Because sometimes

  506. we can get to reading

  507. and just kind of

  508. flow through.

  509. It says,

  510. the Pharisee stood

  511. and prayed thus

  512. with who?

  513. Himself.

  514. He's in the temple.

  515. He's all dressed up

  516. looking religious,

  517. trying to sell everybody

  518. how close he is to God.

  519. Remember,

  520. Jesus looks at the motive.

  521. Jesus gives us

  522. an insight.

  523. He gives us a snapshot

  524. of what's inside

  525. of this unnamed individual.

  526. He said he prayed

  527. thus with himself.

  528. You know,

  529. here's this man

  530. saying a prayer,

  531. but God hasn't showed up.

  532. He's in the place

  533. that God's there,

  534. God's available.

  535. Everything is there,

  536. but it says he prayed

  537. himself.

  538. You know,

  539. sometimes we have to be careful

  540. that we're not just praying

  541. with ourselves.

  542. You know,

  543. when we try to make

  544. ourselves feel better

  545. as we attempt

  546. to convince God

  547. who we are.

  548. You know,

  549. sometimes we can think

  550. about what we've accomplished

  551. or what we've sacrificed.

  552. You know,

  553. when we let him know

  554. that we're unappreciative

  555. and take advantage

  556. of things,

  557. or how tired

  558. and exhausted

  559. you are laboring

  560. for him.

  561. You know,

  562. that happens oftentimes.

  563. We get so focused

  564. on ourselves,

  565. we have to be careful.

  566. And he gives us

  567. this picture,

  568. we're praying

  569. thus with ourselves.

  570. God isn't anywhere

  571. near our prayers.

  572. Because I want you

  573. to understand,

  574. prayer is not getting

  575. God to do what we want.

  576. You know,

  577. oftentimes people

  578. look at prayer saying,

  579. I can use prayer

  580. to manipulate God.

  581. I want you to understand,

  582. your prayers

  583. don't manipulate God.

  584. Prayer isn't us

  585. trying to get God

  586. to do what we want.

  587. It's getting God

  588. to become,

  589. it's getting us

  590. to become like him

  591. and doing what he wants.

  592. Because the reality is,

  593. it's his will,

  594. not our will.

  595. You know,

  596. part of the problem

  597. with prayer sometimes

  598. is what do I want?

  599. What makes me comfortable?

  600. What's going to benefit me?

  601. You know,

  602. you think about

  603. when Jesus taught

  604. his disciples to pray,

  605. when they asked him to pray,

  606. you couldn't get

  607. a greater contrast

  608. in the Pharisees' prayer

  609. and how Jesus taught

  610. his disciples to pray.

  611. Because the prayer

  612. was all about

  613. who God is,

  614. what God has done,

  615. and what God is going to do.

  616. The right focus.

  617. You know,

  618. we can easily be caught up

  619. in the things

  620. of this life

  621. and miss what Christ

  622. has for us.

  623. To be focused

  624. upon what he desires.

  625. You know,

  626. we had that

  627. self-centered prayer

  628. of the publican.

  629. He stood and prayed

  630. thus with himself.

  631. Let's look quick

  632. at his prayer

  633. just so we understand

  634. what he says.

  635. He says,

  636. God,

  637. I thank thee

  638. that I am not

  639. as other men are.

  640. Extortioners,

  641. unjust,

  642. adulterers,

  643. or even as this publican.

  644. You know?

  645. And then he starts

  646. listing the things

  647. that he did.

  648. You know,

  649. I fast twice a week.

  650. I give tithes

  651. of all I possess.

  652. You know,

  653. all the things that,

  654. Lord,

  655. Lord,

  656. you better take note of me.

  657. Lord,

  658. you know I do a lot.

  659. You know,

  660. one of the things

  661. that gets us in trouble

  662. when we get our eyes

  663. on ourselves,

  664. because sometimes

  665. we get our eyes

  666. on ourselves

  667. and we get our own

  668. pity party going.

  669. Well,

  670. I didn't get what I want.

  671. You know,

  672. the reality is

  673. as a believer

  674. in what Christ

  675. has done for you,

  676. it says we're to be

  677. a living sacrifice.

  678. And that means

  679. if you're going to

  680. sacrifice something,

  681. that means you're giving

  682. voluntarily something

  683. that you may possess,

  684. that you may control,

  685. but you're saying,

  686. Lord,

  687. you use it

  688. how you see fit.

  689. The problem with that

  690. oftentimes with us,

  691. that makes us uncomfortable.

  692. That makes us anxious

  693. because we want

  694. what we want

  695. instead of what God wants.

  696. You know,

  697. today oftentimes

  698. when we get so caught up

  699. in ourselves

  700. is when you start

  701. having the pity party,

  702. isn't it?

  703. A pity party

  704. is no different

  705. than what the Pharisees

  706. praying.

  707. It's me,

  708. me,

  709. me,

  710. me,

  711. me,

  712. me,

  713. me,

  714. Lord,

  715. look at me.

  716. It's empty.

  717. He stood there

  718. with this supreme

  719. positioning,

  720. lording over,

  721. you know.

  722. Think about that.

  723. It says,

  724. he stood there

  725. and prayed thus

  726. with himself,

  727. God,

  728. I thank thee

  729. that I am not

  730. as other men are.

  731. He had a supreme

  732. mindset to say,

  733. you know,

  734. I get to make

  735. the decisions

  736. when we compare

  737. our life

  738. with our neighbors

  739. and those at work

  740. or the average person

  741. on the street.

  742. You know,

  743. we may appear

  744. to be doing great,

  745. but it's God

  746. who is the standard.

  747. We need to hold

  748. our life up

  749. next to him.

  750. You know,

  751. I want you to understand

  752. the Bible tells us

  753. that we're not

  754. going to measure up.

  755. Matter of fact,

  756. totally the opposite.

  757. You know,

  758. Romans tells us

  759. that there is none

  760. righteous,

  761. no,

  762. not one.

  763. This man says,

  764. Lord,

  765. look at me,

  766. I'm righteous.

  767. And God looks back

  768. at him and says,

  769. no,

  770. you're not.

  771. You know,

  772. if you use the wrong

  773. measuring stick,

  774. you'll get the wrong

  775. length every time.

  776. I'll give you

  777. a good example.

  778. You know,

  779. it's like we compare

  780. a lot of things,

  781. especially like in

  782. track and field.

  783. They have two different

  784. standards that go

  785. because you have

  786. a time for yards

  787. that are run

  788. and time for meters

  789. that are run.

  790. You know what?

  791. There's a difference

  792. between a yard

  793. and a meter.

  794. It might not be much,

  795. but you know what?

  796. When you start multiplying,

  797. it makes a big difference

  798. on the outcome.

  799. You know,

  800. if you grabbed a,

  801. I remember they used

  802. to make meter sticks.

  803. You know,

  804. I'm old enough to remember

  805. when all that was

  806. starting to come out.

  807. I don't see them

  808. around much anymore.

  809. You know,

  810. those have kind of

  811. faded away.

  812. But you know,

  813. the problem with that,

  814. the 39 and a half

  815. inches tall was a problem

  816. when you thought

  817. it was 36.

  818. Why is that?

  819. Because you're measuring

  820. with the wrong assumption.

  821. This man was measuring

  822. with the wrong assumption.

  823. He thought he was good

  824. and it was about him

  825. and Jesus says,

  826. no,

  827. it's about me.

  828. To measure up

  829. those things,

  830. all have sinned

  831. and come short

  832. of the glory

  833. of God.

  834. You know,

  835. the reality is

  836. is what we measure

  837. against is important.

  838. You know?

  839. It's kind of like

  840. when you're doing work,

  841. you know,

  842. one of the most

  843. important things,

  844. you have two important

  845. things in building

  846. a building.

  847. One is level

  848. and the other is plumb.

  849. The difference,

  850. level goes this way,

  851. plumb goes this way.

  852. Both are critical

  853. and to know

  854. how to measure it

  855. is critical

  856. because a plumb line

  857. will give you

  858. a truly accurate

  859. picture of where

  860. something is.

  861. You know?

  862. A level sometimes

  863. you can get off

  864. a little bit.

  865. You know about

  866. a plumb line though?

  867. A plumb line

  868. will always be accurate.

  869. When a plumb line

  870. hangs,

  871. the end of that point

  872. is perfectly

  873. 90 degrees,

  874. perfectly straight down

  875. from the point

  876. it hangs from.

  877. There's no hiding it.

  878. There's no deception.

  879. If you put it

  880. against there,

  881. it will show

  882. and reveal exactly

  883. the plumb line.

  884. Matter of fact,

  885. you know,

  886. turn back in the Old Testament,

  887. go to Amos chapter 7.

    Amos 7 chapter mention

  888. Because it's interesting

  889. that God doesn't

  890. tell us to be level,

  891. He tells us to be plumb.

  892. I didn't say plump,

  893. I said plumb.

  894. Amos chapter 7

    Amos 7 chapter mention

  895. and verse 8,

  896. notice what it says,

  897. And the Lord said unto me,

  898. Amos,

  899. What seest thou?

  900. And I said,

  901. a plumb line.

  902. Then said the Lord,

  903. Behold,

  904. I will set a plumb line

  905. in the midst

  906. of my people Israel,

  907. and I will not again

  908. pass by them anymore.

  909. It's interesting

  910. that God uses

  911. a plumb line

  912. as a picture.

  913. Why?

  914. Because there's no deviation

  915. of a plumb line.

  916. It will be true.

  917. The reality

  918. is proven out.

  919. The truth is,

  920. God gives us

  921. a plumb line today.

  922. It's called His Word.

  923. He gives us His Word.

  924. He is not interested

  925. in negotiation

  926. or compromise.

  927. He has forever

  928. settled His Word,

  929. and He's not going to

  930. bend the standard

  931. to make us look straight.

  932. You know,

  933. the problem is,

  934. we like things

  935. we can maneuver.

  936. But we need to understand

  937. that God gives us

  938. His standard.

  939. Look back in the New Testament.

  940. John chapter 12,

    John 12 chapter mention

  941. in verse 48,

  942. it says,

  943. And he that rejecteth me

  944. and receiveth not my words

  945. hath one that judges him,

  946. and the word that I have spoken,

  947. the same shall judge him

  948. in the last day.

  949. You know,

  950. I want you to see here,

  951. the Word of God

  952. is our plumb line of life.

  953. Are we lining up

  954. with what God's Word says?

  955. You know,

  956. this man,

  957. the interesting thing

  958. about the Pharisee

  959. that we're looking at,

  960. he had a soothing portrayal

  961. of himself.

  962. He prays with himself

  963. and he feels better

  964. about his conscience

  965. because he attempts

  966. to remind God

  967. of how spiritual he is.

  968. Lord, look,

  969. I go through

  970. all the right things.

  971. I fast twice a week.

  972. I give tithes

  973. of all I possess.

  974. You know,

  975. like the Pharisee,

  976. sometimes we get caught up

  977. in ourselves

  978. instead of caught up

  979. in what God has.

  980. to say,

  981. God,

  982. I'm willing to do

  983. what you want me to do.

  984. It's not about me

  985. or how it makes me feel.

  986. It's about what's my responsibility

  987. before you.

  988. How am I measuring

  989. to your plumb line?

  990. When we pray to God

  991. and he sees us as we are,

  992. are we saying,

  993. God,

  994. look at me?

  995. Are we saying,

  996. Lord,

  997. I need you

  998. to assess me?

  999. You know,

  1000. think about Isaiah

  1001. in chapter 6

  1002. and verse 5

  1003. when he says,

  1004. Woe is me

  1005. for I am undone

  1006. because I'm a man

  1007. of unclean lips

1008. and I dwell in the midst

1009. of people of unclean lips

  1010. for my eyes

  1011. have seen the King,

  1012. the Lord of hosts.

1013. When we get our eyes

  1014. on the Lord,

  1015. it changes the perspective

  1016. of ourselves.

1017. But we see next quickly here,

1018. we see not only the motive

  1019. in the mistake,

1020. but we see a very contrite man

  1021. that's the counter.

  1022. Because if we're going

  1023. to look here,

1024. we see the other unnamed,

  1025. the publican.

  1026. The opposite is unfolding.

  1027. Now these two things

  1028. are happening simultaneously,

  1029. I think.

1030. I think when Jesus talks

  1031. in this parable,

  1032. he's talking about

1033. two men that walk in.

1034. One goes to do his thing,

  1035. the Pharisee,

1036. and wants everybody to see,

  1037. you know,

  1038. and everybody to know.

1039. And I think you have

1040. the publican that kind of

  1041. sneaks in behind

  1042. and says,

  1043. I have to focus

  1044. on what God has.

1045. Notice here in verse 13

  1046. back in our text,

  1047. it says this,

  1048. it says,

  1049. and the publican

  1050. standing afar off

  1051. would not so much

  1052. as eyes,

1053. lift so much as eyes

  1054. unto heaven,

  1055. but smowed his breast.

  1056. In other words,

  1057. you know,

1058. I want you to see here,

  1059. there's a common thread

1060. in those who are used of God.

  1061. This man was willing

  1062. to humble himself.

  1063. He caught the first

  1064. important thing.

1065. If you're going to catch

  1066. God's ear,

  1067. it's to humble yourself.

  1068. To say,

  1069. Lord,

  1070. it's not about me.

  1071. You know,

  1072. by nature,

  1073. we like ourselves.

  1074. Ultimately,

1075. we look out for ourselves.

  1076. We are by nature

  1077. selfish people.

  1078. People will even do

  1079. good things

  1080. to help themselves.

  1081. Think about the Pharisee.

1082. What was he pointing to?

  1083. He says,

  1084. I do these things

1085. so everybody thinks I'm good.

  1086. But he missed

1087. what it was before God.

  1088. But here we have

  1089. this publican

  1090. that comes in,

  1091. this tax collector,

  1092. and he comes

  1093. and he humbly

  1094. comes before God.

  1095. Because look at

  1096. how he humbles himself.

  1097. Look at his cry

  1098. for help.

  1099. Verse 13 says,

  1100. saying,

  1101. God,

  1102. be merciful to me,

  1103. a sinner.

  1104. You know what?

  1105. When Jesus went

  1106. to the cross,

  1107. he went for sinners.

  1108. He went because

  1109. of our sin.

  1110. He didn't go

1111. so we could be proud

  1112. or boastful.

  1113. He didn't say,

  1114. I'm going to go

  1115. to the cross.

  1116. My body's going

  1117. to be crushed

  1118. and bruised.

  1119. I'm going to bleed

1120. for those to be prideful.

  1121. Exact opposite,

  1122. wasn't it?

  1123. To realize we're a sinner

  1124. that needs a Savior.

  1125. You know,

  1126. the more we depend

  1127. on ourselves,

  1128. our goodness,

  1129. our merit,

  1130. our abilities,

  1131. the more we're going

  1132. to fall.

  1133. You cannot get rid

  1134. of your own sin.

  1135. You know,

  1136. we need to grab

1137. a hold of the fact

  1138. that we need

  1139. to humble ourselves

  1140. before God.

  1141. Be willing to say,

  1142. Lord,

  1143. what would you have

  1144. for me to do?

  1145. Where would you

1146. have me to be faithful?

  1147. Where would you

1148. have me do my part?

  1149. You know,

  1150. oftentimes I think

  1151. we get caught up

  1152. in what's in it

  1153. for me instead of,

  1154. Lord,

  1155. what would you

  1156. have me to do?

  1157. Because we cannot

  1158. live for Christ

  1159. on our own.

  1160. We need to be

  1161. dependent upon Him.

  1162. You know,

  1163. 2 Corinthians chapter 3

    2 Corinthians 3 chapter mention

  1164. says this,

  1165. it says,

  1166. not that we are

  1167. sufficient of ourselves

  1168. to think anything

  1169. as ourselves,

  1170. but our sufficiency

  1171. is of God.

  1172. You know,

  1173. sometimes we need

  1174. to get our eyes

  1175. off ourselves

  1176. and get them

  1177. back on God.

1178. Because even as a believer,

  1179. you know what,

  1180. we can become

  1181. like the Pharisee.

  1182. You can become

  1183. like the one

  1184. that gets our eyes

  1185. on ourselves

  1186. instead of having

  1187. our eyes

  1188. on the Savior.

  1189. To keep our eyes

  1190. upon Him

  1191. because our sin

  1192. and our miserable

  1193. condition in ourselves,

  1194. we may think

1195. that our cry to God

  1196. will be in vain,

  1197. but you know,

  1198. the reality is

  1199. when we come

  1200. humbly before Him,

  1201. God will hear

  1202. and God will answer.

  1203. Think about what

  1204. Micah says

  1205. in Micah 7 verse 18.

    Micah 7:18

  1206. It says,

  1207. Who is a God

  1208. like unto thee

  1209. that pardoneth iniquity

  1210. and passes by

  1211. the transgression

  1212. of the remnant

  1213. of His heritage?

  1214. He retaineth not

  1215. His anger forever

  1216. because He delighteth

  1217. in mercy.

  1218. You know,

  1219. the one thing

  1220. you can know

  1221. about God

  1222. is God delights

  1223. in those who

  1224. humbly come before Him

  1225. because God delights

  1226. in being merciful.

  1227. He'll not turn

  1228. a deaf ear.

  1229. God will hear

  1230. the merciful.

  1231. He will be merciful

  1232. to those who have

  1233. humbled themselves

  1234. because we see

  1235. also a clear measurement.

  1236. You know,

  1237. the Pharisee

  1238. had a false measurement

  1239. by his assessing

  1240. of himself

  1241. with another human being.

  1242. You know,

  1243. when we compare

  1244. ourselves to others,

  1245. it's always easy

  1246. to find somebody

  1247. who will make us

  1248. feel good.

  1249. Have you ever noticed

  1250. that?

  1251. Don't take long

  1252. looking around

  1253. to find somebody

  1254. worse than you.

  1255. It's just amazing,

  1256. you know.

  1257. It's like you can

  1258. always find,

  1259. you know,

1260. no matter who it is,

  1261. I could take you

  1262. down here

  1263. to the worst ward

1264. down here at the jail

  1265. and you know

  1266. what the person's

  1267. going to do?

  1268. Well,

  1269. that guy over there

  1270. is worse than me.

  1271. I only killed

  1272. 22 people.

  1273. He killed 24.

  1274. He's worse.

  1275. I mean,

  1276. the measurement

  1277. is just insane,

  1278. really.

  1279. Well,

  1280. he said,

  1281. I didn't kill

  1282. anybody,

  1283. but you know

  1284. what?

  1285. Sometimes we look

  1286. at our own sin

  1287. and say,

  1288. hey,

  1289. they've sinned

  1290. worse than me,

  1291. so therefore

  1292. I must be okay.

  1293. A humble person

  1294. says it doesn't

  1295. matter what

  1296. the other person

  1297. did.

  1298. One of humility

  1299. says I only

  1300. understand that

  1301. I'm accountable

  1302. to God.

  1303. I'm accountable

  1304. for what He's done.

  1305. You know,

  1306. a false measurement,

  1307. one that was

  1308. inaccurate.

  1309. You know,

  1310. one of the things

  1311. you'll find

  1312. in the Old Testament

  1313. is people would

  1314. use scales

  1315. to cheat people

  1316. and God would

  1317. call them on it.

  1318. You know,

  1319. the Lord condemns

  1320. improper measurement.

  1321. You know,

  1322. Proverbs 20,

    Proverbs 20:10

  1323. verse 10

  1324. says,

  1325. divers weights

  1326. and divers measures.

  1327. Both of them

  1328. are alike,

  1329. abomination to the Lord.

  1330. You know,

  1331. the funny part is

  1332. they've actually found

  1333. weights that are off

  1334. in archaeology.

  1335. They'll be marked

  1336. for one thing

  1337. and when they

  1338. actually weigh them,

  1339. they weigh different

  1340. than what they're marked.

  1341. You know what

  1342. that tells them?

  1343. Hey,

  1344. there was people

  1345. cheating people.

  1346. Today,

  1347. oftentimes,

  1348. we cheat ourselves

  1349. by measuring

  1350. with the wrong things.

  1351. Just like a weight

  1352. on a scale

  1353. can be inaccurate

  1354. when we judge

  1355. with the wrong thing

  1356. ourself before God,

  1357. it becomes inaccurate.

1358. I want you to understand

  1359. that sometimes

1360. this is good and bad

  1361. because sometimes

  1362. we think God

  1363. can't do something

  1364. and we have

  1365. an inaccurate

  1366. measurement of God

  1367. because God says,

1368. I can if you trust me.

  1369. It works both ways.

  1370. God says that we

  1371. ought to have

  1372. a right measurement

  1373. because notice here quick

  1374. the justification

  1375. that was pronounced

  1376. by Christ.

  1377. Verse 14,

  1378. Jesus looks at him

  1379. and says,

  1380. I tell you this,

  1381. man went down

  1382. to his house

  1383. justified

  1384. rather than the other.

  1385. You know?

  1386. Boy,

  1387. that's a pretty harsh

  1388. assessment,

  1389. isn't it?

1390. Jesus looks at the Pharisee

1391. that everybody would have said,

  1392. man,

1393. that guy has it together.

  1394. And everybody looks

  1395. at the public

1396. and it says he's over there

1397. just crying out to God.

  1398. The Bible says

  1399. just being,

  1400. it's just saying,

  1401. God,

  1402. I'm the sinner.

  1403. I imagine everybody

  1404. was looking at him

  1405. like,

  1406. look at him.

  1407. He's right.

1408. He needs to get right.

  1409. But Jesus says

  1410. he went down

  1411. to his house

  1412. justified

  1413. because he humbled himself

  1414. and said,

  1415. Lord,

  1416. be merciful to me,

  1417. a sinner.

  1418. What a picture

  1419. that we have.

  1420. You know,

  1421. you think even when

1422. Jesus was on the cross,

  1423. consider the two thieves.

  1424. You know,

  1425. the two thieves

  1426. were comparing themselves

  1427. one to another

  1428. and comparing themselves

  1429. to Christ too,

  1430. weren't they?

  1431. You know?

  1432. And their perception

  1433. of who Jesus is

  1434. made a difference.

  1435. They both deserved

  1436. a cruel death

1437. that were hanging beside him.

  1438. One ridiculed him

  1439. but the other thief

  1440. cried out to God.

  1441. The Bible says

  1442. that he cried out

  1443. and said,

  1444. Lord,

  1445. remember me

  1446. when thou comest

  1447. into thy kingdom.

  1448. He looked at Jesus

  1449. and said,

1450. I believe that you are

1451. who you said you are.

1452. There was no good thief

  1453. that would merit heaven.

1454. He could not come off the cross

  1455. and reform his life

1456. or start going to church.

  1457. His only hope

  1458. was in the Savior.

1459. His eyes was only on Christ.

  1460. Jesus said,

1461. today thou shalt be with me

  1462. in paradise.

  1463. The picture

  1464. of simple faith

  1465. and the proper judgment

  1466. of saying,

  1467. Lord,

  1468. I'm a sinner.

  1469. Have merciful.

  1470. Be merciful to me.

  1471. You know,

1472. today I think we have

  1473. a lot of people

  1474. who call themselves Christian

  1475. but the real question

  1476. we ought to ask

1477. is God call you one.

  1478. All that will matter

  1479. on judgment day

  1480. is judgment day

  1481. when you stand

  1482. before the Lord

  1483. is what Jesus

  1484. is assessment of you

  1485. because it will either

  1486. be assessed

  1487. by the shed blood

  1488. of Jesus Christ

1489. and how it's been applied

  1490. to your life

  1491. or it won't.

1492. We need to grab a hold

  1493. of the justification

  1494. Jesus pronounced

  1495. one justified.

  1496. But we find also

  1497. a jarring paradox

  1498. here because notice here

  1499. in verse 14

  1500. it says,

1501. for the one that exalted

  1502. himself shall be abased

1503. and he that humbled himself

  1504. shall be exalted.

  1505. You know,

  1506. Jesus is again

1507. teaching a very simple reality.

1508. He says to humble yourselves

  1509. before God.

  1510. The Bible says

1511. that he will lift you up.

  1512. Not ourselves

  1513. but him.

  1514. You know,

  1515. the Pharisee exalted himself

  1516. and the publican

  1517. humbled himself.

  1518. Now,

  1519. 2,000 years after

  1520. we're still

  1521. reading and speaking

  1522. about what took place.

  1523. These two unnamed men

  1524. and what took place.

  1525. Now,

  1526. don't get caught

  1527. in your own self-conceit

  1528. or by comparing yourself

  1529. the wrong way.

1530. I want to encourage you

  1531. to always see yourself

  1532. as God sees you.

  1533. That starts with

  1534. understanding that God

1535. sees you as a sinner

  1536. who needs a Savior.

1537. But the other side of that

1538. is a very positive thing too

  1539. because once you're saved

1540. God sees you as his child.

  1541. He's there.

  1542. He's with you.

  1543. He protects you.

  1544. He looks over you.

  1545. The same is true

  1546. if you're his child.

1547. If you've called upon him

  1548. as your Savior.

  1549. If you've been born

  1550. into his family.

  1551. God looks at you

  1552. and not just

  1553. as a sinner

  1554. but a sinner

  1555. that's been saved

  1556. by grace.

1557. make sure you see yourself

  1558. and understand

  1559. how God sees you.

  1560. We can learn that

  1561. from these two men.

  1562. These two people

  1563. with no name

  1564. that Christ mentions.

  1565. Let's pray.

  1566. Heavenly Father

1567. as we come before you

  1568. this morning

1569. Lord we just thank you.
