  1. Go ahead and take your Bibles tonight, turn over to 1 Kings chapter 20, 1 Kings chapter 20,

1 Kings 20 chapter mention 1 Kings 20 chapter mention

  2. as we get a few handouts here this evening on that.

  3. We can get some help with that as we turn to 1 Kings chapter 20.

    1 Kings 20 chapter mention

  4. Thank you, John. Appreciate that.

  5. You know, we've been looking through here at the kings of Israel and of Judah,

  6. as we've been looking here at the divided kingdom there,

  7. as we've gone through the different kings.

  8. We've come to Ahab, and we've been looking at Ahab in Judah.

  9. Right now is Jehoshaphat, and we'll come back to Jehoshaphat here.

  10. I think, Lord willing, next week we'll come back as these two tie together once again.

  11. But we looked last week here in 1 Kings chapters 18 and 19

    1 Kings 18 chapter mention

  12. at the spiritual battle that had taken place on Mount Carmel.

  13. And once again it revealed to Israel that the same Lord that brought them out of Egypt

  14. is the same God that came down with fire from heaven

  15. and consumed the sacrifice from the prophet Elijah.

  16. And the victory really brought about a clear picture of who they had to choose,

  17. whether they were going to serve Baal or whether they were going to serve God.

  18. And we saw that Elijah the prophet and the others that were with him there

  19. killed the prophets of Baal.

  20. And the winner was declared, but Ahab, as we're going to see here,

  21. still had to go back and tell Jezebel, you know,

  22. and tell her what had happened.

  23. And Baal and his prophets had been decisively crushed up on Mount Carmel.

  24. And we know here that this brought about a price on the head of Elijah

  25. that he fled to Beersheba and currently possessed by Judah.

  26. Beersheba had been taken there.

  27. But Israel had been facing a drought, if you remember.

  28. And after the conflict up on the Mount and the sacrifice that the rains had came,

  29. but Elijah went in the power of the Lord through that.

  30. But also after that, we know that Elijah went

  31. and we find that he hid down at Beersheba because of Jezebel's threat to kill him.

  32. And we're going to see here that God already had a plan for that

  33. because as we're going to look here tonight,

  34. Elijah once again kind of disappears from the scene for a while.

  35. And we're not going to dig into Elijah since we're focusing on the kings,

  36. but I want you to see here just to know that what happens here,

  37. God takes and uses even to protect Elijah

  38. because it distracts or takes away from the focus they had

  39. wanting to get back at Elijah for what happened out up on Mount Carmel.

  40. It also brings about a different direction that they had to take

  41. because the Syrians come and invade Israel.

  42. And sometimes we need to look at, we're going to see here tonight,

  43. that God is above everyone and everything as he works through the defeat of Syria.

  44. Because even though God is using an enemy that comes in,

  45. we're going to see that God also used it to protect.

  46. And in the same time, God's also working in the heart of Ahab and in the children of Israel.

  47. You know, and the wonderful thing is I was thinking through this

  48. and preparing the one thing that came to mind,

  49. you know, I'm glad we have a God that can chew gum and walk at the same time.

  50. Amen.

  51. I mean, he can do multiple things all simultaneously.

  52. You know, he can take care, provide, he can protect,

  53. he can do all these things above and beyond what we could even comprehend.

  54. And so I'm thankful that, you know, we don't serve a God that's limited in time or space or means.

  55. We serve a God that supersedes all those things.

  56. All those things, or he supersedes them.

  57. And we're going to see here that as Elijah passes from the scene here for a few years once again,

  58. we're going to see the focus becomes upon Ahab and his posterity.

  59. And we're going to look at that here in a little bit.

  60. But there's a lot of things happening here in the interim.

  61. We find Ben-Hadad, along with 32 other kings, arrive with Syria in his sight.

  62. So let's pick up here in 1 Kings chapter 20.

    1 Kings 20 chapter mention

  63. As we're going to look here tonight in verse 1, it says,

  64. And Ben-Hadad, the king of Syria, gathered all his hosts together.

  65. And there were thirty and two kings with him, and the horses and chariots.

  66. And he went up and besieged Samaria and warred against it.

  67. And he sent messengers to Ahab, king of Israel, into the city and said unto him,

  68. Thus saith Ben-Hadad, and thy silver and thy gold is mine, the wives also, and thy children, even the goodliest, are mine.

  69. And the king of Israel answered and said,

  70. My lord, O king, according to thy saying, I am thine and all that I have.

  71. And the messengers came again and said,

  72. Thus speaketh Ben-Hadad, saying,

  73. Although I have sent unto thee, saying,

  74. Thou shalt deliver me thy silver and thy gold and thy wives and thy children,

  75. yet I will send my servants unto thee tomorrow about this time.

  76. And they shall search thine house and the houses of thy servants.

  77. And it shall be that whatsoever is pleasant in thine eyes,

  78. thou shalt put it in their hand and take it away.

  79. And the king of Israel called all the elders of the land and said,

  80. Mark, I pray you, then see how this man seeketh mischief.

  81. For he sent unto me for my wives and for my children and for my silver and for my gold.

  82. And I denied him not.

  83. And all the elders and the people said unto him,

  84. Hearken not unto him, nor consent.

  85. Wherefore he said unto the messengers of Ben-Hadad,

  86. Tell my lord the king,

  87. All that thou didst send forth to thy servant at the first I will do.

  88. But this thing I may not do.

  89. And the messengers departed and brought him word again.

  90. And Ben-Hadad said unto him and said to the gods,

  91. So do unto me, and more so,

  92. If the dust of Samaria shall suffice for handfuls of all the people that follow me.

  93. And the king of Israel answered and said,

  94. Tell him,

  95. Let not him that girdeth on his harness boast himself as he that putteth it off.

  96. And it came to pass,

  97. And Ben-Hadad heard this message as he was drinking,

  98. He and the kings in the pavilions.

  99. And he said unto his servants,

  100. Let's set yourselves in array and set themselves,

  101. And they set themselves in array against the city.

  102. So let's pray.

  103. Heavenly fathers, we come before you tonight, Lord.

  104. We just thank you for your word.

  105. We're thankful for the pictures and the things that we can understand

  106. and even apply to our lives, Lord,

  107. practical realities of who you are,

  108. what you've done, Lord.

  109. the importance even tonight of turning to you

  110. and trusting you in even the difficulties of life,

  111. not to turn our back upon who you are.

  112. Lord, help us to learn as we walk through the life of Ahab

  113. and the things and the children of Israel,

  114. here that we might see you not only there,

  115. but, Lord, see you working even in our own lives in these areas.

  116. And, Lord, we just ask it all in your precious name.

  117. Amen.

  118. You know, as we see here,

  119. the Lord had just revealed himself to Ahab

  120. through Elijah the Tishbite up on Mount Carmel.

  121. And now we see that the Lord puts Ahab to the test.

  122. Because, remember, Ahab had seen,

  123. and they had to make a choice.

  124. Remember, Elijah's message was pretty simple.

  125. One that he made a very declarative

  126. that you have to decide who are you going to serve.

  127. You know, why halt you between two opinions?

  128. You know, how long are you going to try to serve Baal and to serve God?

  129. You know, you have to make a choice.

  130. And we saw that and put to the test

  131. and how God here, we're going to see,

  132. protects Elijah from the fury of Jezebel.

  133. And so we're going to see how God quickly redirects the enemy

  134. on the doorstep Syria

  135. and uses this series of confrontations

  136. between Ahab and Benedad

  137. to draw God's attention even more

  138. to Ahab and to his relationship with him.

  139. Because we saw last week

  140. that God always extends mercy and grace

  141. as much as possible.

  142. You know, it's amazing to see how God,

  143. even Ahab, the most wicked king to date,

  144. we saw God still extend

  145. out to him an opportunity to turn to him.

  146. You know, the wonderful thing is,

  147. no matter where somebody is in life,

  148. we learn one very clear factor

  149. that no matter what's happened

  150. or where people are,

  151. no matter what they've done,

  152. while you're still drawing breath,

  153. somebody has an opportunity to repent

  154. and come to God.

  155. Nothing limits us

  156. from being able to turn to him

  157. in this life except our own selves.

  158. You know, our sin is separated,

  159. but Jesus took care of everything, didn't he?

  160. There's nothing else needed

  161. but the blood of Christ

  162. to cover any sin

  163. to be able to be right with God.

  164. And so we're going to look here tonight,

  165. the confrontation of the kings.

  166. You know, the confrontation of kings here

  167. is Ben-Hadad and his colleagues invade Israel

  168. and besiege the city of Samaria

  169. as we just read here.

  170. And, you know, he sends forth

  171. the first negotiation

  172. as he has 32 kings with him.

  173. In other words, I want you to understand

  174. that the number of people

  175. that came with the king of Syria

  176. was like an insurmountable number of people.

  177. I mean, it was just a massive army

  178. that had gathered and besieged Samaria.

  179. And he sends in the first negotiation

  180. and he says,

  181. Hey, Ahab, the first thing you're going to do

  182. is you're going to surrender all your silver.

  183. You're going to surrender all your gold.

  184. You're along with your wives and your children.

  185. All those things I'm going to take.

  186. And, you know, we see here

  187. that really Ahab

  188. really surrenders this out pretty quickly.

  189. You know, the Bible doesn't tell us why,

  190. but look in verse 4.

  191. Look at his first initial response

  192. to what's happening.

  193. Here it says,

  194. And the king of Israel answered and said,

  195. My lord, O king,

  196. according to thy saying,

  197. I am thine and all that I have.

  198. I mean, he capitulates very quickly

  199. to this demand.

  200. I mean, it's like he just very quickly turns

  201. and says,

  202. Hey, you can have my wives.

  203. You can have my children.

  204. You can have my gold.

  205. You can have my silver.

  206. You just need to depart.

  207. You know, he gives them

  208. and tells them they can have all these things.

  209. You know, we don't know.

  210. All the Bible doesn't give us

  211. an insight into the back.

  212. Thinking of Ahab here, you know,

  213. I imagine that he might have been

  214. feeling outnumbered.

  215. He might have been feeling hopeless

  216. and helpless in the midst of things.

  217. Because remember,

  218. Israel had just suffered a great famine.

  219. The land was devastated.

  220. There was a lot of problems

  221. associated with that.

  222. We're going to see,

  223. even as God works through

  224. this moment in the life of Ahab

  225. and the children of Israel,

  226. you know,

  227. but we find here that Ahab

  228. would send forth these things

  229. to Benadad

  230. and he would take what was requested

  231. and depart.

  232. But Benadad instead

  233. makes an additional demand.

  234. I think it's one of those things

  235. that, you know,

  236. hey, this was too easy.

  237. Let's see what else we can get.

  238. You know,

  239. one of those things

  240. where if I can get,

  241. if he'll give us this,

  242. this easily,

  243. what else can we get from him?

  244. And so he sends forth the next

  245. seeking to ransack the palace

  246. and the houses of the people there,

  247. the officials,

  248. and for everything

  249. that they thought would be of value.

  250. You know,

  251. he raised the stakes

  252. just from what Ahab had

  253. to what everybody had.

  254. Because I want you to see here,

  255. what did he tell them?

  256. Whatsoever,

  257. look in verse 6,

  258. whatsoever is pleasant to thine eye.

  259. I mean,

  260. you think about that.

  261. You imagine somebody

  262. being able to walk through your house

  263. and say,

  264. that looks what I want to take

  265. and they can just take it.

  266. I mean,

  267. you think about

  268. whatever looks good to them,

  269. you know,

  270. it's like,

  271. that's a pretty open door.

  272. You know,

  273. that's a broad spectrum of stuff

  274. and broad spectrum of things

  275. that they could take

  276. and we see this coming about

  277. because the eye is something

  278. that's never satisfied.

  279. You know,

  280. you think about the door

  281. that you open,

  282. you know,

  283. think about what Solomon says

  284. in Ecclesiastes chapter 1

    Ecclesiastes 1 chapter mention

  285. and verse 8.

  286. It says,

  287. all things are full of labor,

  288. man cannot utter it.

  289. The eye is not satisfied

  290. with seeing

  291. nor the ear filled with hearing.

  292. In other words,

  293. you know,

  294. you can never quit looking at things.

  295. I mean,

  296. as long as you have sight,

  297. you're always consuming.

  298. Your eye is an all-consuming thing

  299. that draws in.

  300. I mean,

  301. it's continually there

  302. and the desire that is there.

  303. You know,

  304. how many times do you get something,

  305. want something

  306. because you see it first?

  307. You know,

  308. our sight is something

  309. that draws us in.

  310. You know,

  311. and we see here

  312. that this,

  313. whatever their eye

  314. was pleasant to them

  315. and this sparks,

  316. for some reason,

  317. we find it gets a little backbone

  318. in Ahab

  319. because now he calls

  320. for a meeting

  321. of the officials

  322. and the elders in the land,

  323. you know.

  324. And so we find here

  325. that Ahab is meeting

  326. with the elders of the land

  327. and the response

  328. is they responded

  329. by encouraging Ahab

  330. not to listen

  331. to the threat

  332. nor consent

  333. to the increased demands.

  334. I mean,

  335. look here at verse 8

  336. as we read earlier

  337. and it says,

  338. and all the elders

  339. and all the people

  340. said unto him,

  341. hearken not unto him

  342. nor consent.

  343. In other words,

  344. hey,

  345. what are you thinking?

  346. You know,

  347. what are you doing?

  348. Don't just concede

  349. everything that he wants

  350. and to give that to him.

  351. So the message

  352. is returned

  353. to Benadad

  354. who is drinking

  355. and relaxing

  356. in his pavilion.

  357. I mean,

  358. you think about

  359. Benadad here,

  360. he's so confident

  361. that he's just

  362. hanging out.

  363. He's like,

  364. I'm so overwhelming

  365. number of these guys

  366. that I'm not even concerned

  367. with what's going on.

  368. I am so powerful,

  369. so mighty,

  370. so comfortable

  371. in all those

  372. that I've conquered

  373. that I'm just

  374. basically chilling out

  375. in his pavilion.

  376. He's sitting in the shade

  377. just relaxing

  378. and we find

  379. that they're drinking

  380. and in the pavilion,

  381. you know,

  382. they're getting drunk,

  383. they're just having

  384. a good time,

  385. they're not taking it

  386. seriously,

  387. you might say,

  388. in this.

  389. And so we find here

  390. the return message

  391. that he comes

  392. and the messengers

  393. come back from Ahab

  394. and we find

  395. that he was shocked

  396. at what was said.

  397. Notice in verse 10

  398. what he tells him here

  399. in reply.

  400. And Ben-Hadad

  401. sent unto him

  402. and said,

  403. The gods do so unto me

  404. and more so

  405. if the dust of Samaria

  406. shall suffice

  407. for handfuls

  408. of all the people

  409. that follow me.

  410. Now,

  411. I want you to see

  412. the picture here

  413. for a moment.

  414. What he's saying is,

  415. he says,

  416. you can go round up

  417. and sweep the dust

  418. off the streets

  419. and if that were soldiers

  420. wouldn't be enough

  421. to defeat us.

  422. Think about the arrogance

  423. in the statement.

  424. He basically says,

  425. you can sweep up

  426. the dust of the streets

  427. and if every piece of dust

  428. was a soldier,

  429. you still wouldn't

  430. stand a chance.

  431. He's pretty arrogant

  432. in his statement.

  433. And we're going to see here

  434. as Ahab,

  435. a reply is pretty classic.

  436. Notice what he tells him here.

  437. He says,

  438. Let not him that girdeth

  439. on his harness

  440. boast himself

  441. as he putteth it off,

  442. Now,

  443. you know,

  444. to us,

  445. that phrase doesn't mean much

  446. but it really simply

  447. is this,

  448. you know,

  449. don't mark your victory

  450. before you've actually

  451. fought the battle.

  452. You know,

  453. don't say,

  454. I'm one

  455. before you even

  456. got on the field.

  457. You know,

  458. we might phrase it

  459. a different way today.

  460. Don't count your chickens

  461. before they hatch.

  462. You know,

  463. if you've ever raised

  464. chickens and had eggs,

  465. an egg can look good

  466. but it doesn't mean

  467. it's going to have anything.

  468. You know,

  469. I want you to understand

  470. that that's the reply

  471. that he's sending back

  472. to him.

  473. But he's replying back

  474. and saying,

  475. don't be taking off

  476. your uniform

  477. and your weapon

  478. before the battle

  479. even begins

  480. thinking it's going

  481. to be so easy.

  482. You know,

  483. he tells him here

  484. and you know,

  485. it's important

  486. because we see

  487. the arrogance

  488. that's somewhat

  489. being exchanged here.

  490. You know,

  491. we see a lot of people

  492. today exchange

  493. that same idea

  494. of arrogance,

  495. don't they?

  496. And a lot of pride

  497. that's brought in.

  498. You know,

  499. look over to Proverbs

    Proverbs 27 chapter mention

  500. chapter 27

  501. for a moment.

  502. Proverbs chapter 27

    Proverbs 27 chapter mention

  503. because as we see

  504. Ahab here

  505. and God dealing

  506. with him,

  507. pride

  508. is a core issue

  509. in the life of Ahab.

  510. You know,

  511. the reality is

  512. pride can be

  513. a core issue

  514. in our life.

  515. Pride can hinder

  516. us a lot.

  517. Pride gets a hold

  518. of us

  519. because notice here

  520. in Proverbs 27

    Proverbs 27:1

  521. verse 1

  522. he says,

  523. Boast not thyself

  524. of tomorrow

  525. for thou knowest

  526. not what the day

  527. may bring forth.

  528. You know,

  529. I want you to understand

  530. you don't always

  531. have a guarantee

  532. of tomorrow.

  533. You know,

  534. you might have

  535. a lot today

  536. and you'd have

  537. nothing tomorrow.

  538. You know,

  539. the Bible makes

  540. that very clear.

  541. If you read through

  542. and you look

  543. at the book of Job,

  544. Job was wealthy

  545. among

  546. men

  547. one day

  548. and by the end

  549. of the following day

  550. he had no

  551. animals,

  552. he had no workers,

  553. he had no family.

  554. Everything he had

  555. of value was gone.

  556. You know,

  557. those things

  558. come and go

  559. but we need

  560. to remember here

  561. that Benadad

  562. was in the midst

  563. of the other kings

  564. and he was drinking

  565. and boasting

  566. of the victory.

  567. You know,

  568. I can just imagine

  569. this scenario

  570. because if you can

  571. look at people

  572. and think about

  573. people today,

  574. imagine people

  575. hanging out

  576. and he makes

  577. a threat

  578. to Ahab

  579. and all the other

  580. 32 kings

  581. are sitting there.

  582. He makes a threat

  583. to Ahab

  584. and says,

  585. this is what

  586. you're going to do,

  587. this is what

  588. you're going to

  589. give me.

  590. And Ahab

  591. comes back out

  592. and says,

  593. okay,

  594. well now I want

  595. more.

  596. The king's here

  597. that he wants

  598. more.

  599. Now Ahab

  600. comes out

  601. and says,

  602. no.

  603. I don't know

  604. about you

  605. but the reality

  606. is what's going

  607. to happen there?

  608. What's going

  609. to be the reaction?

  610. Bandad's going

  611. to have a lot

  612. of pride

  613. because his pride

  614. is on the line

  615. now.

  616. You know,

  617. how dare you

  618. come out

  619. because it's

  620. almost like

  621. embarrassing him

  622. in front of

  623. all the other

  624. kings that he's

  625. conquered.

  626. I mean,

  627. I want you to

  628. see the picture

  629. here because,

  630. you know,

  631. oftentimes we can

  632. react the same

  633. way.

  634. When something

  635. doesn't go

  636. or we get a

  637. response the way

  638. we don't,

  639. we can rear up

  640. our pride

  641. and get ahead

  642. of ourselves.

  643. You know,

  644. his reply

  645. was getting

  646. ahead of himself

  647. in that

  648. because we're

  649. going to see

  650. here that he

  651. was just trying

  652. to save faith

  653. so he responds

  654. by readying

  655. the army

  656. to conquer

  657. the city.

  658. I mean,

  659. everybody's

  660. hanging out

  661. and all of a

  662. sudden he

  663. says,

  664. hey guys,

  665. get in place.

  666. I'm upset.

  667. You know,

  668. Ahab has just

  669. mocked me

  670. in front of

  671. everybody.

  672. But we're

  673. going to see

  674. here that God

  675. takes a

  676. confrontation

  677. and God's

  678. going to turn

  679. it into a

  680. crushing defeat.

  681. You know,

  682. a crushing

  683. defeat.

  684. Look here at

  685. verse 13.

  686. And behold,

  687. there came a

  688. prophet unto Ahab,

  689. king of Israel,

  690. saying,

  691. Thus saith the

  692. Lord,

  693. Hast thou seen

  694. all this great

  695. multitude?

  696. Behold,

  697. I will deliver

  698. it into thine

  699. hand this day,

  700. and thou shalt

  701. know that I

  702. am the Lord.

  703. Now we know

  704. why God

  705. allowed this.

  706. You know,

  707. we have a

  708. picture of why

  709. God allowed it.

  710. Why?

  711. So Ahab and

  712. the children of

  713. Israel could see

  714. once again.

  715. Remember,

  716. he already

  717. showed him

  718. he was God

  719. up on the

  720. mount with

  721. Elijah.

  722. Now he's

  723. back here

  724. facing the

  725. Syrians and

  726. the others

  727. with him.

  728. And God

  729. says,

  730. I'm allowing

  731. this and I'm

  732. going to give

  733. you victory

  734. to show you,

  735. to reveal

  736. fully to you

  737. that I am

  738. the Lord

  739. God of

  740. Israel.

  741. I am the

  742. one.

  743. And it was

  744. not just

  745. Ahab that

  746. heard that

  747. prideful

  748. reply

  749. of

  750. Anad

  751. but the

  752. Lord

  753. did also.

  754. I want you

  755. to see

  756. here,

  757. we're going

  758. to look

  759. here,

  760. the Lord

  761. deals

  762. with the

  763. king of

  764. Syria

  765. and his

  766. pride too.

  767. God's

  768. going to

  769. deal with

  770. it in a

  771. very crushing

  772. way,

  773. but the

  774. Lord is

  775. going to

  776. do that.

  777. You know,

  778. we need

  779. to understand

  780. that the

  781. Lord is,

  782. pride is

  783. something that

  784. keeps us

  785. from God.

  786. Pride is one

  787. of the things

  788. that keeps

  789. people from

  790. salvation.

  791. Pride keeps

  792. people from

  793. repentance.

  794. You say,

  795. how does

  796. pride work?

  797. Well,

  798. they're more

  799. worried about

  800. what somebody

  801. else thinks

  802. than what

  803. God thinks.

  804. And I

  805. want you to

  806. see here,

  807. people try to

  808. exalt themselves

  809. in that.

  810. Look to,

  811. in the Old

  812. Testament,

  813. turn to

  814. Obadiah,

  815. look down

  816. at verse

  817. four.

  818. Here,

  819. Obadiah is

  820. writing about

  821. a similar

  822. situation of

  823. pride.

  824. Notice what

  825. he says in

  826. Obadiah

  827. chapter one,

  828. verse four.

  829. If you have

  830. chapter two in

  831. Obadiah,

  832. you need a

  833. different Bible.

  834. Not a very

  835. big book,

  836. but notice what

  837. he says there.

  838. He says,

  839. though thou

  840. exalt thyself

  841. as the eagle,

  842. and though thou

  843. set thy nest

  844. among the stars,

  845. hence I will

  846. bring thee down,

  847. sayeth the Lord.

  848. Now,

  849. I want you to

  850. understand,

  851. God has a way

  852. of humbling an

  853. individual,

  854. to realize that

  855. you are not

  856. more powerful

  857. or greater

  858. than God.

  859. You know,

  860. we live in a

  861. generation that

  862. thinks they

  863. exceed God.

  864. God.

  865. You're in

  866. trouble when

  867. you think you

  868. are more

  869. powerful than

  870. God.

  871. God will

  872. humble people

  873. who declare

  874. that.

  875. Bible tells us

  876. one day every

  877. knee will bow.

  878. People may

  879. think they're

  880. going to get

  881. away with it

  882. for a while,

  883. but one day

  884. accountability is

  885. coming.

  886. They will face

  887. accountability,

  888. accountability.

  889. And while we

  890. don't know who

  891. this mystery

  892. prophet is,

  893. we know it's

  894. not Elijah,

  895. because where's

  896. Elijah?

  897. He's down in

  898. Beersheba,

  899. and we know

  900. God's dealing

  901. with him and

  902. some of the

  903. things going on

  904. in his life.

  905. We see a whole

  906. different perspective

  907. of things happening

  908. down there,

  909. and these things

  910. even still interlace

  911. with one another

  912. as we're going to

  913. see here.

  914. We don't know

  915. who this prophet

  916. was, but he came

  917. with authority.

  918. Look at verse 13.

  919. Notice the authority

  920. he came with.

  921. He says this,

  922. saying, what?

  923. Thus said the

  924. Lord.

  925. You know, there

  926. are some things

  927. in life we need

  928. to understand that

  929. God just says,

  930. thus saith the

  931. Lord.

  932. It's just the way

  933. it is.

  934. It's not open

  935. for discussion.

  936. It's not debatable.

  937. It's not, how do

  938. I feel about it?

  939. It's, no, God

  940. says, thus saith

  941. the Lord.

  942. There are things

  943. that are unchangeable.

  944. It has nothing to

  945. do with what we

  946. think about it.

  947. You know, as God

  948. is working through

  949. this authority,

  950. he's telling Ahab,

  951. he says, you've

  952. seen the multitude.

  953. You've seen Syrians

  954. taking positions

  955. around you,

  956. getting ready to

  957. crush you.

  958. And that's what it

  959. looks like.

  960. I mean, the numbers

  961. were astronomical.

  962. And what does God

  963. tell him?

  964. Look at the end

  965. of verse 13.

  966. He says, thus saith

  967. the Lord, I will

  968. deliver you, deliver

  969. it into thine

  970. hand this day, and

  971. thou shalt know

  972. that I am the

  973. Lord.

  974. You know, here's a

  975. prophet of God

  976. comes to Ahab and

  977. says, Ahab, let me

  978. tell you something.

  979. If you listen to the

  980. prophet, I'm going

  981. to deliver them into

  982. your hand in a

  983. mighty way.

  984. And we're going to

  985. see God do that very

  986. clearly here in just a

  987. little bit.

  988. So Ahab, remember,

  989. just witnessed fire

  990. come down from

  991. heaven, and now God

  992. sends another prophet

  993. and tells him, hey,

  994. I'm going to show

  995. you, once again, I'm

  996. God, even in this

  997. situation.

  998. That I'm above all

  999. the pride, I'm above

  1000. all the arrogance, I'm

  1001. above everything that

  1002. people think, that

  1003. they have all the

  1004. power and might, and

  1005. God says, I'm above

  1006. all that.

  1007. Because notice, as we

  1008. look down through here,

  1009. what takes place.

  1010. I love the next

  1011. phrase there in verse

  1012. 14.

  1013. Ahab looks at the

  1014. prophet, and by

  1015. whom?

  1016. You know, here's a

  1017. guy that's very

  1018. prideful and wants to

  1019. make decisions, and

  1020. suddenly God says, hey,

1021. I'm going to send you

1022. out to do that, and he

1023. looks at him and says,

  1024. who, me?

  1025. You know, there's a lot

  1026. we could cover there.

  1027. Because even as

  1028. Christians, as

  1029. believers today,

  1030. sometimes God says,

1031. hey, I'm going to give

  1032. something great, and we

1033. look at him and say,

  1034. who, me?

  1035. By whom?

1036. You know, God looks at

1037. him and says, by you.

1038. Notice what he tells him

  1039. here.

1040. He says that even by the

1041. young men of the princes of

  1042. the providence, then he

1043. said, who shall order the

  1044. battle?

  1045. And he answered, thou.

1046. You know, he says, hey,

1047. I've got an army for you,

1048. and you're going to lead

  1049. them.

1050. You're going to be in

  1051. charge of this.

1052. Now, I want you to see

1053. here, because as we read

1054. through this, verses 14 and

1055. 15, revealed here that he

1056. numbered the young men of

  1057. the princes of the

  1058. providence, and they were

  1059. 232.

1060. So how many people do we

1061. have so far in his army?

  1062. 232.

  1063. You know?

1064. I can just imagine Ahab.

1065. You got the, talk about the

  1066. dust of the street.

1067. If you gathered them up, you

  1068. wouldn't have enough

  1069. soldiers.

1070. And he says, 232 people.

  1071. You know?

1072. But I want you to see

  1073. something else here, because

1074. notice who else that he

  1075. brings forth.

1076. And he says, and after them,

1077. he numbered all the people,

1078. all the children of Israel,

  1079. being 7,000.

1080. Now, 7,000 is an interesting

  1081. number here.

1082. Because I want you to see

  1083. something here.

1084. Here's Israel, who had large

1085. armies, but now he's down to

  1086. 232 princes.

  1087. churches and leaders of

  1088. people and 7,000 people.

1089. You say, well, what's so

  1090. interesting about 7,000?

1091. Turn back over to chapter

  1092. 19 for a moment.

1093. Now, the Bible doesn't make

1094. this direct connection, but I

  1095. think it's interesting God's

  1096. reply in chapter 19.

  1097. Because notice, who's willing

1098. to trust God to go out?

  1099. You know?

  1100. I don't think they found a

1101. whole lot of volunteers except

  1102. for 7,000.

  1103. Who are these 7,000?

  1104. Look in verse 18.

1105. It says, yet have I left me

1106. 7,000 in Israel, all the knees

1107. which have not bowed unto Baal,

1108. and every mouth which hath not

  1109. kissed him.

1110. In other words, he says, I got

1111. 7,000 guys that are willing to

1112. go out to battle because they

  1113. trust me.

  1114. Ahab is down.

1115. He can't find all his friends he

  1116. did have.

1117. But when the prophet comes, he's

1118. got 7,000 that trust the Lord, and

1119. the Lord said, hey, we're supposed

1120. to follow Ahab into battle.

  1121. Ahab into battle.

1122. And they said, hey, if God said it's

1123. going to give us victory, we're going

  1124. to trust God.

  1125. It looked insurmountable.

1126. You know, all the things that they

  1127. do.

1128. You know, we always need to remember

1129. that God doesn't look at numbers to

  1130. accomplish his things.

1131. You know, look back a little

  1132. earlier.

1133. Go back to 1 Samuel chapter 14.

    1 Samuel 14 chapter mention

1134. We find another man here earlier by

  1135. the name of Jonathan.

1136. If you ever want a good study of

1137. character, study the life of

  1138. Jonathan.

1139. Because Jonathan was a humble

1140. individual, but yet a bold

  1141. individual.

1142. He did not run scared of anything,

1143. but yet never looked at himself as

1144. above where God put him.

1145. But notice what he says here.

  1146. Here's Jonathan in 1 Samuel 14

    1 Samuel 14:6

  1147. verse 6.

1148. And Jonathan said to the young man

  1149. that bear his armor.

1150. So here's Jonathan and his armor

  1151. bearer.

1152. And he says, come, let us go over

1153. into the garrison of these

  1154. uncircumcised.

1155. He's talking about the Philistines.

1156. Now notice what Jonathan says.

1157. It may be that the Lord will work

1158. for us, for there is no restraint

1159. to the Lord to save by many or by

  1160. few.

1161. You know, he wasn't being prideful to

  1162. say, I'm so great.

1163. He says, let's go see what God's

  1164. going to do.

1165. Because I want you to understand,

1166. you can read through a little later

1167. there in 1 Samuel, you'll see God

1168. gave him a great victory.

1169. Even though it looked hopeless.

1170. Even here it looked hopeless.

1171. Ahab would have to trust the Lord

  1172. for the victory.

1173. Now, it's interesting here too

1174. in strategy because they leave

  1175. the city at noon.

1176. That was not the time of day

1177. for an army to come out of the city.

  1178. You know?

1179. I want you to understand,

1180. they had a lot of things that they

  1181. practiced very meticulously

  1182. in ancient warfare.

1183. And it was that way for a reason.

  1184. You know?

  1185. You didn't get into a battle

  1186. in the late afternoon.

  1187. That wasn't a good time

1188. to get into the battle, you know?

1189. The heat of the day.

  1190. Because remember,

1191. where was the Syrian king

  1192. and all his friends?

1193. They're sitting in the pavilion

  1194. in the shade,

  1195. hanging out.

  1196. They're drunk.

1197. They're making fun of Ahab.

1198. And here Ahab comes out

  1199. and Benadad says,

  1200. hey, he hears news,

  1201. hey, there's some men

1202. come out of the city.

1203. He's figuring that this is the people

  1204. that surrendered to him.

1205. So he sends his troops in

  1206. and says, hey,

  1207. capture these guys alive.

  1208. Whether they come out

1209. with ill will or good will,

  1210. no matter what,

1211. I want you to bring them back alive.

1212. Now, I want you to understand,

  1213. Benadad put his guys

  1214. in a bad situation

1215. because his rules of engagement

  1216. got him in trouble.

  1217. You know?

  1218. Because he says,

1219. hey, you're not supposed to kill him.

  1220. You know what?

  1221. The 7,232 that came,

1222. they had one thing in mind.

1223. We're going to get rid of you.

1224. That's not good rules of engagement

  1225. for first contact.

  1226. You know?

  1227. Try to capture them

1228. to somebody who wants to kill you.

  1229. That's not a good combination,

1230. just let me tell you.

1231. But we're going to find here

  1232. that they slew

  1233. those that came

  1234. to confront them.

1235. Look down at verse 20.

  1236. It says this,

  1237. and they slew

  1238. every one his man

  1239. and the Syrians fled

1240. and the Israel pursued them

  1241. and Benadad,

  1242. the king of Syria,

  1243. escaped on a horse

  1244. with the horsemen.

1245. And the king of Israel

  1246. went out

  1247. and smote the horses

  1248. and chariots

  1249. and slew the Syrians

  1250. with a great slaughter.

  1251. You know,

  1252. the results

  1253. were a great defeat.

  1254. They conquered them.

1255. But we're going to see here next

  1256. the conquest

  1257. that takes place.

1258. Look here at verse 22.

  1259. And the prophet came

1260. to the king of Israel

  1261. and said unto him,

  1262. Go strengthen thyself

  1263. and mark and see

  1264. what thou doest

1265. for the return of the year

  1266. the king of Syria

1267. will come up against thee.

1268. Now I want you to see

  1269. what's happening here

  1270. because God had given

  1271. a great victory.

1272. He had chased them away,

  1273. destroying the chariots

1274. and all the ground forces

  1275. of the Syrians.

  1276. But it wasn't long

  1277. before the prophet

  1278. shows up again

  1279. and tells Ahab,

  1280. Hey, don't rest

  1281. on your laurels.

  1282. Don't sit back.

  1283. You know,

1284. the one thing I can tell you there,

  1285. sometimes we'll get a victory

  1286. for the Lord

1287. and we get in trouble

  1288. because we sit back.

  1289. Instead of holding

  1290. and continuing,

  1291. we step back.

  1292. Sometimes in conflict

1293. you have to push forward

  1294. even when you're victorious.

  1295. Spiritually

  1296. it's true the same.

  1297. sometimes you get

  1298. a great spiritual victory.

  1299. It's not time

1300. to sit back and relax.

  1301. It's still time

  1302. to be focused

  1303. and you have to

  1304. be prepared

  1305. because he's telling them,

1306. Hey, he's going to be back

  1307. in the spring

  1308. and God continues here

  1309. to reveal himself

  1310. to Ahab

  1311. a desire

  1312. that he and Israel

  1313. would turn

  1314. from their evil ways

  1315. and return

  1316. to worshiping

  1317. God alone.

  1318. You know,

  1319. all throughout Ahab,

  1320. even though he's marked

1321. as one of the most

  1322. wicked kings,

  1323. isn't it amazing

  1324. that you see God

  1325. still

  1326. extending out there

  1327. Ahab,

1328. repent and come to me.

  1329. You know,

  1330. God's a merciful God.

  1331. He wants people

  1332. to have an opportunity.

  1333. He gives such grace

  1334. to us

  1335. and mercy.

  1336. You know,

  1337. the warning alone

  1338. should have caused

  1339. Ahab to repent

1340. when you think about it.

  1341. Hey, God says,

  1342. Hey, I gave you

  1343. a great victory

1344. that you know I'm Lord.

  1345. Now they're going

1346. to return in the spring

  1347. and you need

  1348. to be prepared.

  1349. God sends the prophet

  1350. to him

  1351. and tells him

  1352. what's going to happen.

  1353. You know,

  1354. he says to prepare

  1355. for that spring offensive

  1356. and this new conquest

  1357. into Israel

1358. would bring a massive army

  1359. that would fill

  1360. the country.

  1361. You know,

  1362. Benadad had returned

  1363. to crush Ahab

  1364. and Israel.

  1365. He was set.

  1366. He wasn't going

  1367. to be defeated.

  1368. Matter of fact,

  1369. he had cheered

  1370. his people up.

  1371. He made an excuse

  1372. for the loss.

  1373. Now,

  1374. take a look here

  1375. and this is

  1376. in verse 23.

  1377. And the servants

1378. of the king of Syria

  1379. said unto him,

  1380. Their gods

  1381. are the god

  1382. of the hills.

  1383. Therefore,

  1384. they were stronger

  1385. than we,

  1386. but let us fight

  1387. against them

  1388. in the plain

  1389. and surely

  1390. we shall be

  1391. stronger than they.

  1392. And do this thing,

  1393. take the kings away

  1394. and every man

  1395. out of his place

  1396. and put captains

  1397. in their rooms

  1398. and number thee

  1399. an army

  1400. like the army

  1401. that thou hast lost

  1402. horse for horse,

  1403. chariot for chariot

  1404. and we will fight

  1405. against them

  1406. in the plain

  1407. and surely

  1408. we will be stronger

  1409. than they.

  1410. And he hearkened

  1411. unto their voice

  1412. and did so.

  1413. Now,

  1414. you need to understand

  1415. a little something

  1416. about geography

  1417. and battle

  1418. to understand

  1419. what's happening here

  1420. because in the hills

  1421. and valleys

  1422. in the sharp hills

  1423. and valleys

  1424. a chariot

  1425. becomes less effective.

  1426. Chariots are effective

1427. warfare out on open plains.

  1428. You know?

1429. Because the area is open

  1430. and they become

  1431. more maneuverable

  1432. and effective

  1433. in what they do.

1434. So what did the Syrians say?

  1435. We got defeated

1436. because we were in the hills

  1437. around Samaria

1438. so we're going to get them

  1439. out into the plains

1440. and we're going to crush them

  1441. because our god

1442. is the god of the plains.

1443. Theirs is the god of the hills

1444. because they had victory there.

1445. We're going to get them out

1446. where our god can get victory.

1447. Now they're going to find out

  1448. that that doesn't matter

1449. but that's the way people think.

  1450. So he puts together

  1451. a great army

  1452. and he comes down

  1453. to Apek

  1454. there

1455. which is on the plains

  1456. in northern Israel

1457. and it was this declaration

  1458. that the Lord used

  1459. to reveal his power

  1460. was not restrained

  1461. to the hills

  1462. or the valleys.

  1463. God says

  1464. I can

  1465. my ability

  1466. is not limited

  1467. by geographic location.

1468. I want you to see here

  1469. what happens here.

1470. It says in verse 27

  1471. the children of Israel

  1472. were numbered

1473. and they were all present

  1474. and went against them

1475. and the children of Israel

  1476. pitched before them

  1477. like two little flocks

  1478. of kids

  1479. but the Syrians

  1480. filled the country

  1481. you know

1482. and the man of God

  1483. and there came

  1484. a man of God

1485. and spake unto the king

  1486. of Israel

  1487. and said

  1488. thus saith the Lord

  1489. because the Syrians

  1490. have said

  1491. the Lord is God

  1492. of the hills

  1493. but he's not God

  1494. of the valleys

  1495. there where I deliver

  1496. all this great multitude

  1497. into thy hand

  1498. and ye shall know

1499. that I am the Lord.

  1500. Here's God once again

  1501. saying

  1502. guys trust me

1503. I'm going to show you

  1504. who I am.

  1505. They've mocked me

1506. and I'm going to show them

  1507. what that results in.

  1508. Because remember here

1509. this had nothing to do

  1510. directly with Israel

  1511. God said

  1512. I'm going to judge

  1513. Syria for their pride.

1514. I'm going to judge them

1515. and hold them to account

  1516. you know

  1517. to understand

  1518. who God is

  1519. it was for them

  1520. and also

  1521. those

  1522. in us

  1523. that came

  1524. with the Syrians.

  1525. You know

  1526. the arrogance

  1527. of the Syrians

  1528. they came with

  1529. crushing force.

  1530. You notice here

  1531. as we read

  1532. what Israel

  1533. looked like

  1534. two little flocks

  1535. of sheep

  1536. gathered on the hillside

  1537. compared to the Syrians

  1538. that consumed

  1539. all the valley

  1540. and the area around.

  1541. They looked like

  1542. two little flocks

  1543. of sheep

  1544. among them.

  1545. You know

  1546. but I want you

  1547. to understand

  1548. God had told Israel

  1549. before

  1550. turn back to

  1551. Deuteronomy chapter 4

    Deuteronomy 4 chapter mention

  1552. for a moment

  1553. Deuteronomy chapter 4

    Deuteronomy 4 chapter mention

1554. look here in verse 39

  1555. because God wanted

1556. to reveal who he is

  1557. not who they thought

  1558. he was

  1559. you know

  1560. that's one of the

  1561. other problems

  1562. that we see today

  1563. is people like

  1564. to make a God

  1565. to their own image

  1566. of who they think.

  1567. What were the Syrians

  1568. doing?

  1569. They made a God

  1570. to say hey

  1571. he's the God

  1572. of the hills

1573. but we have a God

  1574. of a valley

  1575. that's more powerful.

1576. I want you to understand

  1577. God looks at him

  1578. and says

  1579. I'm not constrained

  1580. by either.

  1581. Notice what it says

  1582. here in verse 39

  1583. he says

  1584. know therefore

  1585. this day

  1586. and consider

  1587. where

  1588. in thine heart

  1589. that the Lord

  1590. he is God

  1591. in heaven above

  1592. and upon the earth

  1593. beneath

  1594. and there is

  1595. none else.

  1596. You know

  1597. one of the things

1598. to always keep in mind

  1599. is to realize

  1600. we serve a God

  1601. that's above

  1602. everything else.

  1603. We walk on

  1604. his creation.

  1605. We walk on

  1606. what he holds together.

  1607. You know

  1608. the psalmist

  1609. in Psalm 47

    Psalms 47:2

  1610. verse 2

  1611. says

  1612. for the Lord

  1613. most high

  1614. is terrible

  1615. he is a great

  1616. king over

  1617. all

  1618. the earth.

  1619. You know

1620. I want you to understand

  1621. we serve a God

  1622. that's greater

  1623. than any location.

  1624. God says

  1625. that I am God

  1626. of all of it.

1627. Not just some of it

  1628. but all.

  1629. And so

  1630. the prophet here

  1631. reveals to Ahab

  1632. that the Lord

  1633. is not doing this

  1634. for him

  1635. instead he's

  1636. presenting a great

  1637. truth that everyone

  1638. that he

  1639. is the Lord.

  1640. Notice what he says

  1641. there in verse 28

  1642. he says

  1643. that ye may know

  1644. that I

  1645. am

  1646. the Lord.

  1647. That you might know

  1648. not have to question

  1649. to clear it up

  1650. in your mind

  1651. remember

  1652. up on the mount

  1653. what was Elijah's

  1654. challenge?

  1655. Why halt you

  1656. between two opinions?

  1657. Let's put it

  1658. a different way.

  1659. Elijah looks at him

  1660. and says

  1661. why are you

  1662. acting confused?

  1663. Why are you

  1664. confused who God is?

  1665. God says

  1666. I have revealed

  1667. myself

  1668. I have shown you

  1669. I have shown myself

  1670. more powerful

  1671. than anything else

  1672. and you need

  1673. to trust me

  1674. Israel's out

  1675. on the

  1676. camping

  1677. out there

  1678. with their troops

  1679. that look like

  1680. two little flocks

  1681. of kids

  1682. they're out

  1683. there for seven days

  1684. waiting for the battle

  1685. to begin

  1686. and we're going to

  1687. see what takes

  1688. place here

  1689. look at the

  1690. verse 28

  1691. excuse me

  1692. verse 29

  1693. and they pitched

  1694. one over against

  1695. the other seven days

  1696. and so it was

  1697. on the seventh day

  1698. the battle was joined

  1699. and the children

  1700. of Israel

  1701. slew the Syrians

  1702. a hundred thousand

  1703. footmen

  1704. in one day

  1705. but the rest

  1706. to Affleck

  1707. into the city

  1708. and their wall

  1709. fell upon

  1710. twenty seven thousand

  1711. of the men

  1712. that were left

  1713. and Benedad

  1714. fled and came

  1715. into the city

  1716. into the inner chamber

  1717. you know

  1718. talk about a crushing

  1719. defeat

  1720. here they are

  1721. they look like

  1722. two little burps

  1723. of people

  1724. amongst all the others

  1725. God says

  1726. he wipe out

  1727. a hundred thousand

  1728. you know

  1729. and then to add

  1730. injury to insult

  1731. you're on the run

  1732. you get inside

  1733. the city walls

  1734. and the Bible

  1735. says God

  1736. knocked the wall

  1737. over and killed

  1738. twenty seven thousand

  1739. more

  1740. that's more

  1741. demoralizing

  1742. than you think

  1743. the wall

  1744. was their defense

  1745. the very thing

  1746. that they were

  1747. looking for

  1748. for defense

  1749. fell over

  1750. and killed them

  1751. opened the city

  1752. up

  1753. to Israel

  1754. Benedad's hiding

  1755. here with the

  1756. inner parts

  1757. of the city

  1758. but we're going

  1759. to see here

  1760. that Ahab

  1761. let pride

  1762. get in the way

  1763. again

  1764. and missed

  1765. the very thing

  1766. God was trying

  1767. to show him

  1768. remember

  1769. God said

  1770. I want you

  1771. to know

  1772. that I am

  1773. Lord

  1774. that I am

  1775. the one

  1776. that you ought

  1777. to be

  1778. heeding

  1779. and paying

  1780. attention to

  1781. but we're

  1782. going to

  1783. see that

  1784. instead

  1785. Ahab

  1786. takes his

  1787. pride

  1788. and makes

  1789. compromise

  1790. his compromise

  1791. with evil

  1792. look here

  1793. at verse

  1794. thirty one

  1795. and the

  1796. servants

  1797. said unto

  1798. him

  1799. behold

  1800. now

  1801. we have

  1802. heard

  1803. that the

  1804. king

  1805. of Israel

  1806. are the

  1807. kings

  1808. of the

  1809. house

  1810. of Israel

  1811. are merciful

  1812. kings

  1813. let us

  1814. I pray

  1815. thee

  1816. put on

  1817. sackcloth

  1818. on our

  1819. loins

  1820. and ropes

  1821. upon our

  1822. heads

  1823. and go

  1824. out to

  1825. the king

  1826. of Israel

  1827. per

  1828. adventure

  1829. he will

  1830. save thy

  1831. life

  1832. and so

  1833. they

  1834. girded

  1835. sackcloth

  1836. on their

  1837. loins

  1838. and put

  1839. ropes

  1840. on their

  1841. heads

  1842. and came

  1843. to the

  1844. king

  1845. of Israel

  1846. and said

  1847. thy

  1848. servant

  1849. !

  1850. Now that's

  1851. an interesting

  1852. statement

  1853. because he's

  1854. making

  1855. connection

  1856. with him

  1857. and what

  1858. this

  1859. connection

  1860. of brotherhood

  1861. is is

  1862. one king

  1863. to another

  1864. one person

  1865. in authority

  1866. to another

  1867. person in

  1868. authority

  1869. the Syrian

  1870. officials

  1871. come out

  1872. and Ahab

  1873. says hey

  1874. it'll be okay

  1875. you know

  1876. as they secure

  1877. and they come

  1878. out humbly

  1879. you know

  1880. are you

  1881. going to

  1882. let

  1883. Mahadad

  1884. live

  1885. and you

  1886. know

  1887. Ahab

  1888. quickly forgot

  1889. that it was

  1890. the Lord

  1891. that had

  1892. given the

  1893. victory

  1894. you know

  1895. pride gets

  1896. in the way

  1897. when we

  1898. have victory

  1899. sometimes

  1900. I mean

  1901. it's how

  1902. fast do

  1903. you get

  1904. your eyes

  1905. off what

  1906. happens

  1907. I mean

  1908. you think

  1909. about the

  1910. deliverance

  1911. God gave

  1912. to him

  1913. and right

  1914. away

  1915. he turns

  1916. away

  1917. our hearts

  1918. can be

  1919. and pride

  1920. can really

  1921. reveals the

  1922. wickedness

  1923. that lies

  1924. within

  1925. how we

  1926. can focus

  1927. on ourselves

  1928. you know

  1929. we see here

  1930. instead

  1931. pridefully

  1932. accepts

  1933. the

  1934. terms

  1935. of

  1936. surrender

  1937. you know

  1938. Ben-Hadad

  1939. had offered

  1940. to return

  1941. all the

  1942. cities

  1943. that had

  1944. been

  1945. captured

  1946. by his

  1947. father

  1948. years

  1949. earlier

  1950. we found

  1951. that along

  1952. with

  1953. providing

  1954. markets

  1955. in Damascus

  1956. I mean

  1957. you think

  1958. about that

  1959. hey you

  1960. can come

  1961. trade in

  1962. Damascus

  1963. and we'll

  1964. give you

  1965. all your

  1966. cities

  1967. back

  1968. if you

  1969. just

  1970. let me

  1971. live

  1972. he never

  1973. considered

  1974. something

  1975. very

  1976. important

  1977. the Bible

  1978. says

  1979. as a matter

  1980. of fact

  1981. that Ahab

  1982. made a

  1983. covenant

  1984. with Ben-Hadadad

  1985. all this

  1986. the prophet

  1987. of God

  1988. had said

  1989. thus saith the

  1990. Lord

  1991. and Ahab

  1992. never even

  1993. considered

  1994. to look back

  1995. what does

  1996. God have

  1997. to say

  1998. about it

  1999. you know

  2000. there's times

  2001. in life

  2002. we get a

  2003. victory

  2004. or God

  2005. delivers us

  2006. and we never

  2007. stop to say

  2008. what does

  2009. God have

  2010. to say

  2011. about where

  2012. I am

  2013. right now

  2014. what's

  2015. God's

  2016. guidance

  2017. for where

  2018. I am

  2019. right now

  2020. how does

  2021. God want

  2022. me to go

  2023. forward

  2024. what does

  2025. God want

  2026. for me

  2027. to do

  2028. because I

  2029. want you

  2030. to see

  2031. here

  2032. this leads

  2033. to the

  2034. next thing

  2035. we're going

  2036. to see

  2037. here

  2038. quick

  2039. is that

  2040. it's the

  2041. condemnation

  2042. of Ahab

  2043. you know

  2044. we don't

  2045. have time

  2046. here to

  2047. read everything

  2048. but we'll

  2049. talk about

  2050. this just

  2051. a little bit

  2052. verses 35

  2053. through 43

  2054. you know

  2055. Ahab had

  2056. failed to

  2057. seek the

  2058. Lord's

  2059. will

  2060. for the

  2061. resolution

  2062. of the

  2063. battle

  2064. with Syria

  2065. he would

  2066. face

  2067. the

  2068. condemnation

  2069. of the

  2070. Lord

  2071. the Lord

  2072. once again

  2073. sends a

  2074. prophet

  2075. and the

  2076. prophet

  2077. disguises

  2078. himself

  2079. he has

  2080. somebody

  2081. smite him

  2082. with the

  2083. sword

  2084. so he

  2085. looks like

  2086. he's been

  2087. out in

  2088. battle

  2089. he puts

  2090. ashes

  2091. on

  2092. his face

  2093. and he

  2094. comes to

  2095. him

  2096. and he

  2097. tells

  2098. him

  2099. very

  2100. clearly

  2101. that

  2102. God

  2103. is

  2104. not

  2105. pleased

  2106. with

  2107. what

  2108. his

  2109. decision

  2110. was

  2111. you know

  2112. he speaks

  2113. to him

  2114. look down

  2115. at verse

  2116. 42

  2117. and we'll

  2118. finish up

  2119. here this

  2120. evening

  2121. but notice

  2122. this

  2123. and he

  2124. said

  2125. unto him

  2126. the prophet

  2127. unto Ahab

  2128. thus

  2129. saith

  2130. the

  2131. Lord

  2132. hey

  2133. you know

  2134. what the

  2135. prophet

  2136. comes

  2137. and says

  2138. hey

  2139. you didn't

  2140. inquire

  2141. about what

  2142. God

  2143. said

  2144. but I'm

  2145. going to

  2146. tell you

  2147. what God

  2148. said

  2149. about

  2150. where

  2151. you're

  2152. at

  2153. right

  2154. now

  2155. notice

  2156. what he

  2157. says

  2158. thus

  2159. saith

  2160. Lord

  2161. because

  2162. thou

  2163. hast

  2164. let

  2165. go

  2166. out

  2167. of

  2168. thy

  2169. hand

  2170. a

  2171. man

  2172. whom

  2173. I

  2174. appointed

  2175. to utter

  2176. destruction

  2177. therefore

  2178. thy life

  2179. shall go

  2180. for his

  2181. life

  2182. and thy

  2183. people

  2184. for his

  2185. people

  2186. and the

  2187. king

  2188. of

  2189. Israel

  2190. went

  2191. to his

  2192. house

  2193. heavy

  2194. and

  2195. displeased

  2196. and came

  2197. to Samaria

  2198. you know

  2199. we don't

  2200. have time

  2201. tonight

  2202. but you

  2203. know

  2204. it's

  2205. amazing

  2206. how often

  2207. we get

  2208. upset

  2209. with

  2210. God

  2211. when we

  2212. don't

  2213. do

  2214. things

  2215. God's

  2216. way

  2217. and then

  2218. upset

  2219. it

  2220. doesn't

  2221. turn out

  2222. the way

  2223. we want

  2224. you know

  2225. we can

  2226. get our

  2227. eyes

  2228. on the

  2229. wrong

  2230. thing

  2231. when we

  2232. let

  2233. pride

  2234. get in

  2235. the way

  2236. Ahab

  2237. we can

  2238. learn a lot

  2239. from Ahab

  2240. of how

  2241. pride

  2242. hinders

  2243. our
