  1. Go ahead and take your Bibles this morning and throw it over to Mark chapter 14, Mark chapter 14 this morning.

Mark 14 chapter mention Mark 14 chapter mention

  2. You know, as we had began, or as we continue here, of Jesus and His disciples, we know,

  3. had enjoyed a very special celebration of the Passover together,

  4. and they had ended the meal and had sung a hymn and went out towards the Garden of Gethsemane.

  5. And as they'd enjoyed those things there in the upper room, as that meal had been transformed,

  6. that memorial, from what it had focused on, what went back to Egypt and God passing over them,

  7. to what it now was focused upon, because it was upon Jesus and what He was going to do.

  8. It became a different focus. The picture of the Lamb changed.

  9. It's now focused upon the true Lamb of God, the one who truly could take away the sin of the world.

  10. But as we see here, as we begin today, we're going to begin looking as they depart the upper room,

  11. we're going to see the in route, you might say, out to the garden as they walk through the city.

  12. And John's Gospel gives us the most complete picture of this conversation as he goes.

  13. But as we look here in Mark, Mark records for us some very specific things and very specific elements.

  14. And this is recorded in all four of the Gospels, this incident we're going to look at today.

  15. And as we're going to begin looking at this,

  16. because Jesus continues to prepare His men for what was to come.

  17. And they've been through a great thing and great opportunity and a real blessing.

  18. I mean, I can't imagine being there that night with Jesus as Jesus walked them through this transformation of the Passover meal.

  19. And so I imagine the disciples are kind of, you might say, on an emotional and spiritual high of all the things going on.

  20. You know, they're excited about what's happening.

  21. But also Jesus brings them back to the reality of why He was there.

  22. What did it picture?

  23. And that picture was His death, His burial and His resurrection, the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

  24. And Jesus brings them back.

  25. And as they walk through the city, Jesus presents something to them that's going to take place that causes them to be offended.

  26. You know, today we're going to talk about not me.

  27. You know, because you ever notice you always think somebody else is the one that will do that, but not me.

  28. Jesus is going to deal with His disciples today, and we're going to deal with one specifically, Peter,

  29. who was one, Lord, no, that might be others, but not me.

  30. Lord, that might be what others would do, but not me.

  31. You know, and that's a dangerous place to be.

  32. As we're going to look here this morning in this account.

  33. So if you found Mark chapter 14, let's stand together in honor of the reading of the Word of God.

    Mark 14 chapter mention

  34. We'll pick up here in verse 26, and read down through verse 31 here this morning.

  35. And it says this,

  36. And when they had sung a hymn, they went out into the Mount of Olives.

  37. And Jesus saith unto them,

  38. All ye shall be offended because of me this night.

  39. For it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.

  40. But after that I am risen, I will go before you into Galilee.

  41. But Peter said unto him,

  42. Although all shall be offended, yet will not I.

  43. And Jesus saith unto him,

  44. Verily I say unto thee this day,

  45. Even in this night, before the cock crow twice,

  46. Thou shalt deny me thrice.

  47. But he spake the more vehemently,

  48. And if I should die with thee, I will not deny thee in any wise.

  49. Likewise also said they all.

  50. Let's pray.

  51. Heavenly Father, as we come before you this morning,

  52. Lord, we're just,

  53. Lord, as we look at this reality of not me,

  54. Lord, a reality of sometimes we can miss what you've said,

  55. of what you've presented to us.

  56. Lord, sometimes we catch apart and become offended at those things.

  57. And Lord, we pray that you would just work here in our hearts and minds here this morning,

  58. Lord, that we might draw close to you and understand the truth of what you're presenting here to us.

  59. And Lord, that we be not offended, but faithful.

  60. Lord, not just faithful of ourselves,

  61. but in you and the power of your spirit to walk forward in the challenges and the days and the things that lie each hour of each day.

  62. Lord, we pray we might rely upon you, realizing that your word is truth.

  63. And Lord, that we need to rely upon it and not ourselves.

  64. And Lord, we ask it all in your precious name.

  65. Amen.

  66. May be seated.

  67. Amen.

  68. You know, as we look here, the disciples had been walking with Jesus for three years,

  69. over three years at this point.

  70. They'd followed him.

  71. They'd made a decision consciously to follow him, prioritizing everything around Jesus.

  72. I mean, as a believer, that's how we ought to prioritize.

  73. We ought to prioritize around what does God say?

  74. What does God desire?

  75. What does God want from us?

  76. And we see the disciples had prioritized their life.

  77. They'd given up fishing.

  78. They'd given up other means of income.

  79. They had trusted Jesus, not only as their Savior, but just in their following of him.

  80. I mean, their focus was upon him.

  81. And these three years and everything had been centered around that.

  82. And the evening had been one to remember as they realized that Jesus was about to fulfill.

  83. Fulfill all that he came to accomplish.

  84. You know, Jesus here, as he tells him he's going to die, it's the fifth time in the book of Mark,

  85. Jesus says, I'm going to go and I'm going to be killed.

  86. I'm going to rise again.

  87. You know, one thing you can always, I took note of as I read through the Gospels,

  88. whenever you see Jesus saying, hey, I'm going to go and I'm going to die,

  89. it's always attached to I'm rising again.

  90. In other words, he doesn't separate those things because both are important.

  91. It's not secondary, but primary, the reality that he died for our sins,

  92. but resurrection is the victory that he gives us.

  93. He gives us something far more.

  94. You know, knowing that Jesus would soon be killed, they heard it.

  95. But you know, just like us today, sometimes we can, the word of God can present something to us,

  96. and we catch a hold of a part of it, but not all of it.

  97. We grab a hold of a part, and we're going to see here today that Peter became offended

  98. because he caught part of what Jesus said.

  99. And we can do the same thing.

  100. Sometimes we get caught up because it's what stuck out to us.

  101. But you know, I want you to understand one very important thing.

  102. When you're understanding Scripture, look at the whole picture.

  103. Slow down.

  104. If something offends you, take a look at the big picture.

  105. How does it fit together?

  106. What's he telling us?

  107. And how do I need to apply it into my life?

  108. Because when they heard it, they didn't fully grasp it.

  109. You know, that's part of the problem.

  110. Oftentimes we get caught up on one, and we miss something else very important

  111. that Jesus has for us.

  112. And so when Jesus reveals some details of what was to come,

  113. I mean, we could spend a lot of time here in this passage

  114. looking at this of all the elements involved,

  115. that Jesus is lovingly telling them something very important.

  116. You know, we could grab a hold of one thing very quickly here this morning.

  117. And this isn't in the slide, so don't get to...

  118. This is the rabbit trail for the preacher this morning.

  119. I want you to understand that Jesus is declaring something very important to them

  120. that he knows what they're going to do.

  121. He knows that soon they're going to depart and they're going to run away.

  122. But you know what?

  123. I want you to see in here, Jesus, even though he knows who you are,

  124. Jesus still loves you,

  125. and Jesus still makes a plan to reconcile with you.

  126. That's a wonderful truth to keep in mind,

  127. that you are never too far for you to come back to him,

  128. to be reconciled to him.

  129. Jesus knew how the disciples were going to respond.

  130. But yet he lovingly said,

  131. Hey, I'll see you soon.

  132. And we're going to see that pictured here this morning.

  133. And because along the way to the garden,

  134. I mean, there's so much conversation here.

  135. I mean, consider, look over to John chapter 15 for a moment.

    John 15 chapter mention

  136. As Jesus is walking to the garden,

  137. this is one of the statements that he makes to his disciples.

  138. He says this,

  139. Greater love hath no man than this,

  140. that he lay down his life for his friends.

  141. Ye are my friends, if you do whatsoever I command you.

  142. Henceforth I call you not servants,

  143. for servants know not what the Lord doeth,

  144. but I have called you friends.

  145. For all things that I have heard of my Father,

  146. I have made known unto you.

  147. That's a powerful truth that Jesus told him.

  148. He says, Hey guys,

  149. you're not just a servant,

  150. you're a friend.

  151. I'm telling you what's going to happen.

  152. That you might be prepared for what's going to happen.

  153. Of what's going to be accomplished.

  154. You know, that's a different status

  155. than just being commanded to go do something.

  156. When you consider Jesus here,

  157. even this morning,

  158. as we look at this passage,

  159. Jesus is telling him,

  160. Guys, what's going to happen

  161. has been foretold what's going to happen,

  162. but it doesn't change the fact of who you are

  163. and what I'm going to do through you.

  164. And we're going to see Jesus,

  165. he wants them to know,

  166. he says,

  167. You're not just my servant,

  168. but you're my friend,

  169. because I'm letting you know these things.

  170. But you know,

  171. the problem is,

  172. sometimes when you're blunt and truthful

  173. with people,

  174. they get offended.

  175. You ever notice that?

  176. I mean,

  177. I want you to understand,

  178. truth always needs to be wrapped in love.

  179. People need to know,

  180. if you're going to speak hard truths,

  181. you have to have a relationship of love.

  182. Because you know what happens

  183. when there's not a relationship there?

  184. It's taken the wrong way.

  185. You know,

  186. I'll tell you,

  187. you need people who can speak truth into your life,

  188. and you know you love them.

  189. That you know they love you,

  190. and be able to speak hard things.

  191. You know,

  192. as a parent,

  193. sometimes you've got to speak hard things to your kids.

  194. You know what gives credibility as a parent?

  195. When you speak hard truths,

  196. because they know that you love them.

  197. They know that you're seeking what's best for them.

  198. You know?

  199. Those things,

  200. you don't have to like it,

  201. but you do have to understand it.

  202. You have to put it in perspective,

  203. because notice here,

  204. the offended in this passage.

  205. Look at verse 27.

  206. And Jesus saith unto them,

  207. All ye shall be offended,

  208. because of me this night.

  209. You know?

  210. It's funny that Jesus is talking about what's about to happen,

  211. and Peter takes offense to what Jesus said.

  212. He got offended at something that Jesus told him

  213. that he was going to be offended later at.

  214. It kind of has a little irony in it,

  215. and it really connects to how we react oftentimes too, doesn't it?

  216. We can grab a hold of things wrongly,

  217. and Jesus here is revealing to his disciples

  218. what was about to happen,

  219. and he backs it up with Scripture.

  220. In other words,

  221. Jesus says,

  222. Hey guys,

  223. I want you to understand

  224. that what's about to happen,

  225. I already knew it.

  226. I already knew how you were going to respond.

  227. You know,

  228. in the Old Testament,

  229. we find Zechariah chapter 13.

    Zechariah 13 chapter mention

  230. We find in verse 7,

  231. because the passage Jesus is referring to here

  232. is right here.

  233. Zechariah said this,

  234. he said,

  235. Awake, O sword,

  236. against my shepherd,

  237. and against the man that is my fellow,

  238. saith the Lord of hosts.

  239. Smite the shepherd,

  240. and the sheep shall be scattered,

  241. and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones.

  242. And we see here that Jesus is referring back here to Zechariah.

  243. In other words,

  244. I want you to know that Jesus knows your heart,

  245. he knows who you are,

  246. and he loves you anyways.

  247. You know,

  248. that's one of the things that I stood out in this passage,

  249. is the fact that Jesus knows who you are,

  250. what you're going to do,

  251. the decisions you're going to make,

  252. and he loves you anyways.

  253. That's a powerful reality to grab a hold of.

  254. That your performance in life does not matter how much God loves you.

  255. That God loves you in spite of yourself sometimes.

  256. You know,

  257. not because of,

  258. but in spite of,

  259. you might say.

  260. It's like an amazing thing that he would love me,

  261. and that he would love you.

  262. And we see this because as they get involved in these things,

  263. it would involve all of them.

  264. You know,

  265. consider that just a few minutes earlier,

  266. Judas,

  267. who betrayed him.

  268. Well,

  269. you know,

  270. they were looking at that.

  271. Judas had walked out,

  272. and Jesus said,

  273. one was going to betray him.

  274. And we're going to look at that a little bit too,

  275. because it's funny,

  276. because just a few minutes earlier than this,

  277. Jesus tells them,

  278. one's going to betray him,

  279. and they're all like,

  280. who is it,

  281. me?

  282. And now they're,

  283. and Peter's looking at Jesus here in this passage,

  284. and saying,

  285. not me,

  286. I'll never leave you.

  287. You know,

  288. it's amazing how fickle we can be as people.

  289. But we see that he applies it to all,

  290. the plural,

  291. all involves all 11,

  292. there that night,

  293. just as the promise was for each of them,

  294. because I want you to see something here.

  295. Look at verse 28,

  296. because they get caught up on the fact that Jesus said,

  297. hey,

  298. you're going to be offended.

  299. You're going to run away.

  300. You're going to leave me alone.

  301. But look at verse 28.

  302. This is where,

  303. sometimes I think we do the same thing as Peter did here.

  304. We get caught up on the first thing that catches our mind,

  305. and we don't slow down and consider what else is being said.

  306. Because notice what Jesus says in verse 28.

  307. He says,

  308. but after that,

  309. I am risen,

  310. I will go before you into Galilee.

  311. You know,

  312. I want you to think about the implication of what Jesus is saying here.

  313. Jesus is telling them,

  314. he goes,

  315. guys,

  316. I want to let you know,

  317. you're all going to disperse when this goes down.

  318. You're all going to go for fear,

  319. and you're going to depart from me.

  320. But he says,

  321. when I'm risen,

  322. he's giving them a marker.

  323. He says,

  324. hey guys,

  325. when I've risen again,

  326. I'll meet you in Galilee.

  327. You know,

  328. that's interesting.

  329. He says,

  330. I know you're going to depart,

  331. but he says,

  332. I know I've already got a plan to restore you.

  333. God already had things in place.

  334. It didn't catch him off guard.

  335. You know,

  336. the reality is the same when it comes to our salvation.

  337. When Adam and Eve fell in the garden,

  338. it didn't catch God off guard.

  339. Ephesians says,

  340. from the very foundation of the world,

  341. God had a plan to redeem us.

  342. That's love when you say,

  343. I'm going to do everything it takes.

  344. I'm going to provide.

  345. He says,

  346. he's going to rise again and meet them in Galilee.

  347. You know,

  348. but he says,

  349. first you're going to be offended.

  350. You know,

  351. this word offended

  352. is the same word that we get our English word scandalized from.

  353. In other words,

  354. they would look at Jesus as a scandal.

  355. They would rethink their association

  356. that night.

  357. You know,

  358. and really that's kind of what happened

  359. when everything went down

  360. and Jesus was arrested.

  361. They were rethinking their association here.

  362. You know,

  363. they were rethinking,

  364. hey,

  365. what have we invested three plus years in?

  366. Even though Jesus had already told them

  367. all that was going to happen.

  368. This word offended

  369. is a reality that happens.

  370. It should be just a little while

  371. and they would flee for their lives.

  372. You know,

  373. just a little later here in Mark chapter 14,

    Mark 14 chapter mention

  374. we find in verse 50,

  375. it says,

  376. and they all forsook him and fled.

  377. It's a matter of minutes

  378. as we walk through this

  379. of people going,

  380. I'll serve you forever.

  381. I'm running the other direction.

  382. It's the reality of life

  383. and this very evening

  384. in just a little while,

  385. they'll be fleeing from him.

  386. You know,

  387. have you ever considered that

  388. if you would have been asked that night,

  389. do you think you would ever fail the Lord?

  390. You know,

  391. I think most of us would probably

  392. think of ourselves

  393. kind of like Peter sometimes.

  394. Not I, Lord.

  395. Not me.

  396. Others might,

  397. but not me.

  398. You know,

  399. Peter's saying,

  400. I'll be faithful to the end.

  401. But I want to caution you

  402. because it's a dangerous place

  403. to think that you are following the Lord

  404. so close

  405. that you'll never be offended

  406. and turn away.

  407. Because it's a wrong understanding

  408. because that's a place

  409. of self-righteousness saying,

  410. in my power,

  411. I can hold on to Jesus

  412. and we need to realize

  413. that you're not holding on,

  414. he's holding on to you.

  415. We can be self-righteous,

  416. we can be hypocrisy,

  417. we can lack spiritual understanding.

  418. But Jesus shows us

  419. that we need to live our lives

  420. understanding our true condition.

  421. Not one of the disciples

  422. were exempt from it.

  423. It was something

  424. they needed to take personally.

  425. Because notice the personal element

  426. of this here.

  427. Look at verse 29.

  428. But Peter said unto him,

  429. Although all shall be offended,

  430. yet will not I.

  431. What's Peter saying?

  432. He says,

  433. You know, Lord,

  434. I know them other shady people

  435. over there.

  436. They'll let go.

  437. They'll go the other direction.

  438. But you can trust me.

  439. I've got enough.

  440. I have what it takes

  441. to stick with it.

  442. Not I.

  443. You know,

  444. the irony here I find

  445. as I read through this passage,

  446. it wasn't,

  447. but just a few minutes earlier

  448. at the dinner,

  449. in verse 19,

  450. if you look up there,

  451. it's interesting.

  452. When Jesus said

  453. one was going to betray him,

  454. and Peter's one of them

  455. saying,

  456. Is it I?

  457. He goes from,

  458. Is it I?

  459. to not I?

  460. To here in a little bit.

  461. Before the morning comes,

  462. having denied Jesus three times.

  463. Back and forth.

  464. See,

  465. the problem was here,

  466. Peter was sure of himself.

  467. He was strong enough to follow.

  468. The fact is that we really,

  469. that we do not really

  470. even know ourselves,

  471. but Jesus does.

  472. You know,

  473. I want you to understand,

  474. Jesus knew what Peter

  475. was going to do,

  476. as we're going to see here.

  477. Jesus even tells Peter

  478. what he's going to do

  479. when he denies him.

  480. And Peter's still saying,

  481. No, Lord,

  482. you're mistaken.

  483. You don't know me.

  484. You know,

  485. considering the scripture,

  486. you know,

  487. recorded,

  488. you know,

  489. in Luke,

  490. you know,

  491. it talks about in Luke 5,

  492. 22,

  493. it says where Jesus

  494. perceives our thoughts.

  495. He perceived the very thoughts

  496. of the people around him.

  497. Chapter 6 in Luke

  498. talks about his words,

  499. even discern,

  500. not only our thoughts,

  501. but our tense.

  502. He knows our thoughts,

  503. it tells us in Hebrews,

  504. and he knows even the intent

  505. of our hearts.

  506. You know,

  507. think about Hebrews chapter 4

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  508. in verse 12.

  509. At the end of the verse,

  510. it says,

  511. He is the center of the thoughts,

  512. and then he takes it up a notch.

  513. The intents.

  514. I want you to understand

  515. when he says,

  516. to know what somebody's thinking

  517. is one thing,

  518. but to know the intent

  519. behind the thought

  520. is like taking it

  521. a whole step up.

  522. Because oftentimes,

  523. we spend a lot of time

  524. trying to judge people's intents.

  525. Why did they do it?

  526. I'm going to try to judge you

  527. on why did they do that?

  528. And they're just doing that

  529. because they're mean,

  530. or they're doing it for this,

  531. or they're doing it for that.

  532. But you know what?

  533. We really have no clue

  534. of the intent

  535. of somebody's thoughts.

  536. You might be able

  537. to get a big picture,

  538. but you don't have

  539. the detailed picture.

  540. Jesus wants us to know.

  541. He says,

  542. Peter,

  543. I don't just know your thoughts.

  544. I know the intent

  545. behind those thoughts.

  546. What's in your heart?

  547. Where's your relationship

  548. with me?

  549. When Jesus quotes

  550. Zachariah's prophecy,

  551. it revealed that he knew

  552. their thoughts

  553. and intents better

  554. than they did.

  555. Jesus knew Peter,

  556. but he also knew

  557. what Peter would do,

  558. yet with understanding.

  559. Because I want you

  560. to see another part.

  561. Luke records a different

  562. portion of this conversation.

  563. We'll turn to Luke 22

  564. for a moment.

  565. Because I want you

  566. to understand here,

  567. Jesus was not being harsh

  568. with him,

  569. but he was being loving

  570. with him.

  571. This is that same dynamic

  572. and part of this conversation.

  573. Luke chapter 22

    Luke 22 chapter mention

  574. and verse 31 says,

  575. And the Lord said,

  576. Simon, Simon,

  577. behold,

  578. Satan hath desire

  579. to have you,

  580. that he may sift you

  581. as wheat.

  582. Consider,

  583. this is that same part

  584. of this conversation

  585. given to us.

  586. As Peter saying,

  587. no, Lord,

  588. I'll be with you.

  589. And Jesus says,

  590. Peter, slow down.

  591. The devil's going to put

  592. some temptations in place

  593. to sift you as wheat.

  594. He wants to take you down.

  595. But the next part's

  596. something we need

  597. to keep in mind.

  598. Because the devil

  599. wants to take you down,

  600. but you know what?

  601. This is the good part.

  602. Notice what Jesus says,

  603. but I have prayed for thee,

  604. that thy faith fail not.

  605. And when thou art converted,

  606. strengthen thy brethren.

  607. We could spend a lot

  608. of time right here,

  609. but I'm just going to give you

  610. the cliff notes here quick.

  611. Jesus is telling him,

  612. Peter,

  613. when you come

  614. and understand

  615. what's really took place,

  616. when you look back

  617. and say,

  618. I need to come back

  619. to Jesus

  620. when I'm converted,

  621. when I change

  622. my direction,

  623. after he denied Jesus,

  624. he changed his direction.

  625. And Peter is reminded,

  626. Jesus looks at him

  627. and says,

  628. strengthen others

  629. with what you learn,

  630. what you've come through.

  631. It was needful.

  632. Jesus is telling them here

  633. something very important.

  634. Because the same

  635. is true with us.

  636. He knows us better

  637. than we know ourselves.

  638. He knows what we are capable of.

  639. He knows the depths of sin

  640. that even resides

  641. within your heart.

  642. You know,

  643. I think sometimes

  644. we can deceive ourselves

  645. into thinking that

  646. because we're saved,

  647. we have reached a place

  648. where we're no longer

  649. tempted to fail

  650. or can fail.

  651. You know,

  652. we seem to think

  653. that others may fail

  654. but will never fail.

  655. You know,

  656. Peter comes into that place.

  657. I want you to understand,

  658. nobody,

  659. nobody is more

  660. than a decision away

  661. from walking away

  662. from God

  663. when you try to do it

  664. in your own power.

  665. When you try to do it,

  666. I can do it.

  667. You know,

  668. as human beings,

  669. that's one of the things

  670. that we like to do.

  671. I,

  672. I,

  673. I,

  674. I can do it.

  675. I can overcome.

  676. We live in a self-generation

  677. that says,

  678. you have self-willpower

  679. to accomplish.

  680. I want to tell you,

  681. there's certain things

  682. that willpower

  683. is not going to get you through.

  684. Fortitude is good.

  685. All those things are good

  686. but unless you're hanging on

  687. to the Lord,

  688. sooner or later,

  689. you're going to slip.

  690. You know,

  691. look what Peter later writes.

  692. Look up 2 Peter 3,

    2 Peter 3:17

  693. verse 17.

  694. He says,

  695. You know what Peter's saying?

  696. Hey,

  697. you better guard everything

  698. and rely upon the Lord.

  699. Trust Him

  700. in all that's happening.

  701. Don't get upset

  702. over little things.

  703. Keep your eyes

  704. on the Lord.

  705. Because we find ourselves

  706. just like Peter

  707. thinking that we can

  708. serve the Lord

  709. in our own strength,

  710. not relying on Him

  711. to strengthen us

  712. and settle us

  713. just as Paul later writes.

  714. You know,

  715. look over to Philippians chapter 3.

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  716. Philippians chapter 3

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  717. and verse 9.

  718. This is just the same principle

  719. being laid out for us

  720. because Paul says,

  721. How did I endure these things?

  722. I want you to see here.

  723. Paul didn't say,

  724. I endured them

  725. because I'm strong.

  726. I want you to see here,

  727. Peter,

  728. or Paul says,

  729. I endured

  730. and served the Lord

  731. and God used me mightily

  732. not because I'm strong

  733. but because He's strong.

  734. Verse 9 says,

  735. And be found in Him

  736. not having mine own righteousness

  737. which is of the law

  738. but that which is through faith of Christ,

  739. the righteousness

  740. which is of God by faith,

  741. that I may know Him

  742. and the power of His resurrection

  743. and the fellowship

  744. of His sufferings

  745. being made conformable

  746. unto His death

  747. if by any means

  748. I might attain

  749. unto the resurrection

  750. of the dead.

  751. You know,

  752. I want you to see here,

  753. Paul's saying,

  754. hey,

  755. it has nothing to do with me,

  756. it has everything to do with Him.

  757. To have the right focus.

  758. While the disciples

  759. were focused

  760. on the immediate

  761. where it touched them,

  762. the focus was not upon them

  763. but what was possible.

  764. I mean,

  765. they took offense

  766. because Jesus said,

  767. hey,

  768. you're going to all run away tonight

  769. and they're all like,

  770. stop,

  771. tap the brakes.

  772. We're going to get upset

  773. right here

  774. because you're saying

  775. we're not going to be faithful.

  776. And Jesus is telling them,

  777. hey,

  778. guys,

  779. you're missing the point

  780. because He says,

  781. I know what's going to happen.

  782. Scripture is going to be fulfilled

  783. but I'm going to rise again.

  784. Meet me in Galilee.

  785. You know?

  786. As I was studying this,

  787. one commentator

  788. made an interesting point.

  789. He says,

  790. like,

  791. Jesus made a calendar appointment

  792. with His disciples afterwards.

  793. He already put it

  794. on the calendar form.

  795. You know,

  796. oftentimes,

  797. you know,

  798. today we operate by calendar.

  799. Peter,

  800. this you might say

  801. is Jesus' calendar appointment.

  802. He says,

  803. guys,

  804. I'm going to rise again.

  805. Meet me in Galilee.

  806. He says,

  807. I know you're all going to run away

  808. but He says,

  809. meet me in Galilee.

  810. He says,

  811. that after I'm risen,

  812. I will go before you

  813. into Galilee.

  814. You know,

  815. we see this being played out

  816. and the observation

  817. that is there

  818. as Peter is declaring

  819. his loyalty,

  820. Jesus gives him

  821. the details

  822. of what He's going to do.

  823. You know,

  824. I think we need to know

  825. something important

  826. that's shown here.

  827. Jesus knows you

  828. and still made a way

  829. for you to be reconciled

  830. to Him.

  831. Jesus told the same men

  832. that would deny Him

  833. to meet Him in Galilee.

  834. You know,

  835. think about that.

  836. Jesus says,

  837. after I rise again,

  838. I already know

  839. what's going to take place

  840. next too

  841. because these men

  842. are going to have

  843. a moment

  844. when they understand,

  845. when they see

  846. the risen Savior

  847. that changes everything.

  848. I mean,

  849. think about even Thomas.

  850. You know,

  851. Thomas missed church

  852. and missed out.

  853. You know,

  854. and then when he comes

  855. the next time

  856. and he says,

  857. only if I see His hands.

  858. You know,

  859. if I see the scars,

  860. if I see His side.

  861. You know,

  862. I think more of us

  863. relate to Thomas

  864. than we think.

  865. But you know what?

  866. It transformed Thomas

  867. when he realized

  868. Jesus was risen again.

  869. It transformed everything.

  870. When we understand

  871. what Jesus did,

  872. Jesus tells him

  873. that though you're

  874. going to deny me,

  875. meet me in Galilee.

  876. And so,

  877. he looks at Peter

  878. and he deals with Peter

  879. very directly.

  880. Notice verse 30

  881. and he says,

  882. and Jesus saith unto him,

  883. Verily I say unto thee

  884. that this day,

  885. even in this night,

  886. before the cock crow twice,

  887. thou shalt deny me thrice.

  888. Now,

  889. sometimes I like to sit

  890. and think of just reality

  891. of personality.

  892. and people of,

  893. just this conversation

  894. going on.

  895. As Peter gets offended

  896. and says,

  897. not me,

  898. he's denying,

  899. Lord,

  900. all the others

  901. but not me.

  902. And Peter looks,

  903. Jesus looks at Peter

  904. and says,

  905. hey Peter,

  906. the devil wants

  907. to sift you as wheat,

  908. but I've prayed for you

  909. that your faith fail not.

  910. And Peter

  911. is confronted

  912. with the next part

  913. where Jesus says,

  914. Peter,

  915. before the cock

  916. crows twice

  917. tomorrow morning,

  918. you're going to deny me

  919. three times.

  920. It's quite a contrast

  921. of conversation.

  922. But it reveals us

  923. of a loving Savior

  924. that says,

  925. I know you.

  926. I know what's going to,

  927. decisions.

  928. But Peter,

  929. when thou art converted,

  930. strengthen thy brethren.

  931. when they realize

  932. what really is taking place.

  933. When your life

  934. is transformed

  935. by the truth

  936. of the resurrection

  937. of Jesus Christ,

  938. the victory

  939. that we have in Him,

  940. that things are different.

  941. That Peter,

  942. you're not being counted out.

  943. I want you to understand

  944. as Peter is here,

  945. as he responds to this,

  946. notice what it says

  947. in verse 31,

  948. but he spake

  949. the more vehemently,

  950. if I should die with thee,

  951. I will not deny thee

  952. in any wise.

  953. Peter was declaring

  954. his loyalty.

  955. You know,

  956. sometimes we have

  957. to be careful

  958. because we can be

  959. just like Peter.

  960. We get so caught up

  961. in what we're doing

  962. instead of getting focused

  963. upon what Jesus is doing.

  964. Focus upon what

  965. He would have for us.

  966. The declaration here,

  967. Jesus exposes the truth

  968. about the matter,

  969. but also reveals to Peter

  970. that restoration

  971. is possible.

  972. Peter,

  973. in his typical fashion though,

  974. I mean,

  975. Peter's one that many people

  976. can relate to.

  977. You know,

  978. they only hear

  979. what they want to hear.

  980. Peter was the one

  981. of the crowd

  982. that always spoke out

  983. and said the things

  984. that everybody else

  985. was probably thinking

  986. but didn't want to.

  987. You know,

  988. they're a little more reserved

  989. and maybe a little smarter

  990. saying,

  991. let's see how this plays out.

  992. Peter will say something.

  993. We'll let Peter

  994. take the heat.

  995. But I think that's the reason

  996. Peter in the Gospels

  997. becomes very relatable to us

  998. because he says

  999. what we're thinking anyways.

  1000. Peter says

1001. what the others were thinking.

  1002. He refuses to listen

  1003. and he's relying

  1004. on his own strength,

  1005. his own fortitude

  1006. to be faithful

  1007. because notice

  1008. how the focus is

  1009. in this

1010. and notice what he says here.

1011. I will not deny thee

  1012. in any wise.

  1013. He says,

1014. I will die with thee.

  1015. You know,

  1016. one of the things

1017. we need to realize here

1018. that Peter gets in trouble

1019. and I think we get

  1020. in trouble with

  1021. because the Scripture

  1022. has declared

1023. what was going to happen.

  1024. The Scripture

  1025. already determined

  1026. how Jesus

1027. was going to go to the cross

1028. and die for our sin.

1029. That on the third day

1030. he was going to rise again.

1031. That we can have victory.

  1032. That salvation is free.

  1033. It's given by faith

  1034. as you trust Christ

  1035. that realize you're a sinner

  1036. that can't save yourself.

1037. That's all set in Scripture.

  1038. From the Old Testament

  1039. you can lead somebody

  1040. to Christ.

  1041. The reality

1042. that they need a Savior

1043. that God had a plan

  1044. from the very beginning

  1045. to provide

  1046. what was needed.

  1047. We can't rely upon

  1048. our own strength

  1049. in salvation

1050. and we can't rely upon

  1051. our own strength

  1052. to be faithful.

1053. We need to have our focus

  1054. upon the Savior.

1055. We need to be drawn to Him.

  1056. Likewise, the reasons

1057. that Peter's and the others

1058. failed is the same for us.

1059. I want you to see here

  1060. as you look down

1061. at the end of that verse

  1062. as we see here

  1063. in verse 31

1064. it's just one of those

  1065. little add-on sentences

  1066. you might say.

1067. Likewise, also said they all.

  1068. So in other words

  1069. all the other ten

1070. are listening to the conversation

  1071. because remember

  1072. Judas has departed

  1073. to go betray Jesus

  1074. so there's only eleven

1075. and so you've got Peter

  1076. and Jesus in conversation

  1077. the other ten

  1078. are gathered around

  1079. and Peter says

  1080. I'll die with you

1081. and the rest of them go

  1082. yeah!

  1083. Not realizing

1084. what was about to happen

  1085. because they took offense

  1086. at Jesus saying

  1087. they would take offense

  1088. and Jesus said

1089. no, you've got your eyes

  1090. on the wrong thing

  1091. because ultimately

  1092. through this passage

  1093. He points them back

1094. to the Word of God.

  1095. He said what does

1096. the Word of God tell?

  1097. The Word of God

  1098. reveals who we are

  1099. it reveals the thoughts

1100. and intents of our hearts

1101. it reveals where we stand

  1102. before God

  1103. it reveals everything

  1104. about us

1105. I think we can fall

  1106. into the same problem

  1107. very easily

  1108. as the disciples

  1109. because you know

  1110. the root cause

  1111. of the problem here

  1112. are very simple

  1113. some of the problems

  1114. that they face

  1115. are the same problems

  1116. we faced here

  1117. why would Peter respond

  1118. not I Lord?

1119. I think in the Scripture

  1120. you find very clearly

  1121. it's probably pride

1122. pride gets us in trouble

  1123. they never thought

  1124. they could fail

1125. you know what it says

1126. when I in my own power

  1127. that's pride saying

  1128. I can, I can, I can

1129. if you notice in this passage

1130. Peter looks nothing at Jesus

  1131. but he says

  1132. I can, I can, I can

  1133. not I

  1134. pride

1135. it was an inward focus

  1136. they believed

  1137. that they were above

  1138. all that

  1139. you know

  1140. Proverbs 16, 18

  1141. says

  1142. pride goeth before destruction

  1143. and a haughty spirit

  1144. before fall

  1145. Jesus even in this

  1146. is revealing to Peter

  1147. and the disciples

1148. you've got to be careful

  1149. of the pride

  1150. because what we think

  1151. we might do

  1152. doesn't mean that's

  1153. what you will do

  1154. when pride gets involved

  1155. secondly

  1156. self-deception

  1157. the disciples

  1158. had convinced themselves

  1159. that they loved Jesus

  1160. more than anything

  1161. in life

  1162. the irony is

1163. they're about to find out

  1164. that they still

  1165. loved themselves

1166. more than they loved him

  1167. when they all fled

  1168. what did that say?

  1169. it says

  1170. I still love myself

  1171. I'm willing to die

1172. but when the moment comes

  1173. they're running

  1174. the other direction

1175. Lord I love you enough

  1176. I'll die for you

  1177. but they're running

  1178. the other direction

  1179. they deceived themselves

  1180. you know

  1181. Galatians tells us this

1182. if a man think himself

  1183. to be something

  1184. when he is nothing

  1185. he deceiveth

  1186. himself

  1187. you know

1188. we've got to be careful

  1189. of pride

1190. we need to be careful

  1191. of self-deception

  1192. you know

  1193. we need to measure

  1194. ourselves according

  1195. to scripture

  1196. but also

  1197. fear

  1198. you know

  1199. these men

  1200. were confident

  1201. they would go

  1202. with Jesus

  1203. even unto death

  1204. they were about

  1205. to be brought

  1206. face to face

  1207. with the power

  1208. that fear presents

  1209. in our life

  1210. because you know

  1211. what

  1212. fear has caused

  1213. many of God's children

  1214. to back away

  1215. from their testimony

  1216. you know

1217. fear is a major thing

  1218. in our life

  1219. isn't it

  1220. even the strongest

  1221. deal with fear

  1222. fear is something

  1223. that everybody

  1224. deals with

  1225. I'll give you a clue

  1226. if you're not scared

1227. go back to point two

  1228. and point one

  1229. because fear is real

  1230. but how we deal

  1231. with that fear

  1232. is important

  1233. because fear

  1234. has magnified

  1235. the power

  1236. of Satan

  1237. and minimized

  1238. the power

  1239. of Almighty God

  1240. you know

  1241. I want you

  1242. to never underestimate

  1243. the power

  1244. that fear can have

  1245. because fear

  1246. is a motivator

  1247. however we should

  1248. not fear people

  1249. or Satan

  1250. or the things

  1251. of this life

1252. I want you to understand

  1253. the Bible says

  1254. that we're going

  1255. to have fear

  1256. it matters

  1257. where you're going

  1258. to focus that fear

  1259. because if that fear

  1260. is an awe

  1261. and respect for God

  1262. and understand

  1263. he's over all those

  1264. other things

  1265. that scare you

  1266. all those other things

  1267. that scare us

  1268. are under submission

  1269. of God

  1270. you know

  1271. often times

  1272. we get in trouble

  1273. because our fear

  1274. of God

1275. is not what it ought to be

1276. you know what that says

  1277. it means we're not

  1278. having the right respect

  1279. the right honor

  1280. the right focus

  1281. think about what

  1282. Ecclesiastes says

  1283. Ecclesiastes chapter 12

    Ecclesiastes 12 chapter mention

  1284. and verse 13

  1285. says this

  1286. you know Solomon

  1287. comes down

  1288. to this conclusion

  1289. you know

  1290. and if you read

  1291. through Ecclesiastes

  1292. you'll find

  1293. Solomon

  1294. you know

  1295. he went all sorts

  1296. of different directions

  1297. seeking for these things

  1298. and at the end

  1299. of Ecclesiastes

  1300. Solomon makes

  1301. a summary statement

  1302. he says

  1303. let me give you

  1304. the cliff notes

  1305. of this whole thing

  1306. he says

1307. let me sum it up

  1308. for you

  1309. he says

  1310. let us hear

  1311. the conclusion

  1312. of the whole matter

  1313. fear God

  1314. and keep his commandments

1315. for this is the whole

  1316. duty of man

  1317. he said

  1318. you better keep

  1319. your eyes on God

  1320. to understand

  1321. who God is

  1322. but you know

1323. what we get in trouble

1324. when we get our eyes

  1325. off a true

  1326. fear of awe

  1327. and respect

  1328. because we'll either

  1329. fear God

  1330. knowing everything else

  1331. that we fear

  1332. is under him

  1333. or we'll let

  1334. all the things

  1335. we fear

  1336. all the things

  1337. that control us

  1338. dominate our

  1339. perception of God

  1340. you know

  1341. Romans 3

  1342. tells us

  1343. one of the big

  1344. problems

  1345. is there's no

  1346. fear of God

  1347. before their eyes

  1348. but I want you

  1349. to understand

  1350. the other problem

  1351. is ignorance

  1352. the disciples

  1353. were ignorant

  1354. of the power

  1355. of Satan

  1356. and their own

  1357. weakness

  1358. Satan was behind

  1359. the failure

  1360. you know

  1361. think about that

  1362. Luke 22

  1363. Jesus says

  1364. hey Peter

  1365. Satan hath a desire

  1366. to sift you

  1367. as wheat

  1368. he wants to

  1369. draw you

  1370. distract you

  1371. get your eyes

  1372. on everything else

  1373. but God

  1374. he wants to try

  1375. to build a separation

  1376. they thought

  1377. they could stand

  1378. on their own

  1379. power

  1380. self-confidence

  1381. is a deadly

  1382. thing

  1383. 1 Corinthians

  1384. 10 12

  1385. says

  1386. wherefore let

  1387. him that

  1388. thinketh

  1389. he standeth

  1390. take heed

  1391. lest he fall

  1392. you know

1393. we need to be able

  1394. to stand

  1395. in the day

  1396. in which we have

  1397. and that's by

  1398. keeping our eyes

  1399. upon the Lord

  1400. you know

  1401. we don't have time

  1402. this morning

  1403. but write down

  1404. Ephesians 6

    Ephesians 6:10–13

  1405. verses 10

  1406. through 13

  1407. and read that

  1408. a little later

  1409. because if you're

  1410. going to stand

  1411. for the Lord

  1412. I want you to

  1413. understand you need

  1414. to stand

  1415. in his equipment

  1416. in his power

  1417. focused on the

  1418. right thing

  1419. because a not me

  1420. attitude is a

  1421. dangerous place

  1422. to be

  1423. each of us

  1424. must rely

  1425. upon the Lord

  1426. not ourselves

  1427. each day

  1428. you know

  1429. you might find

  1430. yourself like

  1431. Peter and others

  1432. who have never

  1433. thought they would

  1434. be offended

  1435. only to stumble

  1436. and fall away

  1437. because of

  1438. something that

  1439. took place

  1440. that they

  1441. didn't want

  1442. or desire

  1443. but maybe

  1444. you're here

  1445. this morning

  1446. and you've

  1447. never trusted

  1448. Christ as

  1449. your Savior

  1450. the one

  1451. that died

  1452. for you

  1453. and rose

  1454. again

  1455. in victory

  1456. you know

  1457. the wonderful

  1458. thing about

  1459. turning to God

  1460. is it's a

  1461. whosoever will

  1462. nothing in

  1463. your life

  1464. hinders you

  1465. from turning

  1466. to God

  1467. but yourself

  1468. it's open

  1469. to whosoever

  1470. will

  1471. today

  1472. will you

  1473. come to

  1474. him

  1475. because

  1476. he will

  1477. fulfill

  1478. all

  1479. that he

  1480. said

  1481. his heads

  1482. are bowed

  1483. and eyes

  1484. are closed

  1485. this morning

  1486. what about

  1487. you today

  1488. maybe the

  1489. Lord spoke

  1490. to you

  1491. maybe it's

  1492. just one of

  1493. the problems

  1494. we talked

  1495. about

  1496. maybe it's

  1497. just getting

  1498. your eyes

  1499. on the

  1500. right things

  1501. getting your

  1502. eyes on

  1503. the Lord

  1504. keeping your

  1505. eyes on

  1506. the Lord

  1507. even in

  1508. the midst

  1509. of all

  1510. the things

  1511. happening

  1512. to say

  1513. Lord

  1514. all these

  1515. other things

  1516. might be

  1517. disrupted

  1518. but Lord

  1519. I'm going

  1520. to keep

  1521. my eyes

  1522. on you

  1523. you're

  1524. the one

  1525. that's

  1526. above

  1527. my fears

  1528. Lord

  1529. you're

  1530. the one

  1531. that's

  1532. above

  1533. everything

  1534. else

  1535. I'm going

  1536. to serve

  1537. you

  1538. faithfully

  1539. not because

  1540. of who

  1541. I am

  1542. but because

  1543. of who

  1544. you are

  1545. Heavenly

  1546. Fathers

  1547. we just

  1548. come before

  1549. you this

  1550. morning

  1551. Lord

  1552. you know

  1553. each heart

  1554. each life

  1555. here today

  1556. Lord

  1557. I pray

  1558. just have

  1559. your hand

  1560. upon each

  1561. one

  1562. Lord

  1563. you know

  1564. the needs

  1565. you know

  1566. everything

  1567. that's

  1568. taking place

  1569. and Lord

  1570. we pray

  1571. you just

  1572. work in a

  1573. mighty way

  1574. Lord

  1575. if there's

  1576. one here

  1577. today

  1578. that doesn't

  1579. know you

  1580. as Savior

  1581. that they

  1582. might call

  1583. upon you

  1584. Lord

  1585. if there's

  1586. things to be

  1587. dealt with

  1588. in lives

  1589. Lord

  1590. as points

  1591. of surrender

  1592. to say

  1593. Lord I'm

  1594. going to

  1595. trust your

  1596. word above

  1597. how I

  1598. feel

  1599. or how I

  1600. perceive

  1601. Lord

  1602. I'm

  1603. not going

  1604. to be

  1605. offended

  1606. at what

  1607. you

  1608. have

  1609. declared

  1610. but I'm

  1611. going to

  1612. trust

  1613. to this

  1614. truth

  1615. Lord

  1616. you know

  1617. each one

  1618. as we

  1619. have an

  1620. opportunity

  1621. to respond

  1622. today

  1623. Lord

  1624. I pray

  1625. that your

  1626. spirit

  1627. work in a

  1628. mighty way

  1629. and we

  1630. give you

  1631. all the

  1632. praise

  1633. in Jesus

  1634. name

  1635. as the

  1636. piano plays

  1637. what about

  1638. you

  1639. through
