  1. So as we see here, as he's there, and the Lamb without spot, without blemish was to be chosen.

  2. But on Palm Sunday, we see that the very Lamb of God entered the city of Jerusalem.

  3. The one that is the Passover Lamb.

  4. John the Baptist made this statement, the Lamb of God, the one that takes away the sin of the world.

  5. I mean, he made that declaration at the beginning of Jesus' ministry.

  6. And a few days before where we're looking here, we know that Jesus entered into the city of Jerusalem

  7. with a triumphal entry and all that was there.

  8. And it was for what lay ahead, it was Jesus' purpose for that he came into the world.

  9. You know, when he entered Jerusalem, he was there because he had his face set to go.

  10. Because he knew what was going to take place.

  11. You know, the one thing we always have to keep in mind is the crucifixion did not catch Jesus off guard.

  12. And Jesus knew.

  13. But if you found Mark chapter 15, let's look here this morning.

    Mark 15 chapter mention

  14. We'll read a couple of verses here.

  15. Then we'll get into our text for the sake of time here this morning.

  16. But you want to stand together for the honor of reading of the Word of God.

  17. And we'll look down at verses, let's read two verses this morning, verses 15 and 16.

  18. And then we'll cover some others as we go through the text here this morning.

  19. And it says,

  20. Let's pray.

  21. Heavenly Father, as we come before you this morning, Lord, as we look at this text,

  22. the reality of what you've done for us and how you were brought to that point.

  23. Lord, the events leading up to it.

  24. Lord, nothing that surprised you along the way.

  25. But Lord, you had a purpose.

  26. You had a direction and an intention when you went to the cross that day.

  27. You knew even the day you entered Jerusalem for that time,

  28. you knew what was going to take place from that point forward.

  29. Lord, we pray just to have your hand upon each heart, each life here today,

  30. that we might not take that for granted.

  31. We might not take it lightly.

  32. The reality of what you've done for us, that we might be redeemed.

  33. Lord, that we might become a child of God.

  34. And Lord, we ask it all in your precious name.

  35. Amen.

  36. May we be seated.

  37. You know, as we see here, as Jesus had entered in,

  38. and we know that he entered in Sunday, went back,

  39. and he came back on Monday,

  40. and we find that he cleansed the temple and all the things that were there.

  41. You know, he was purifying, getting the leaven out.

  42. You know, you see all the pictures of the Passover in this week.

  43. You see all those elements laying out as Jesus is then questioned.

  44. He's examined.

  45. You know, is he who he says he is?

  46. We know that he met many times every day in the temple,

  47. and he was conversing with them.

  48. But I want you to understand that Jesus knew exactly what was going to take place.

  49. You know, Mark chapter 10, on their way to Jerusalem this time,

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  50. they went every time in Jesus' ministry.

  51. Jesus didn't miss going to Jerusalem for the festivals.

  52. As a matter of fact, the Bible says it was his custom.

  53. It's something he always did.

  54. It was something that he never missed.

  55. And we find here, just again, he heads that same direction,

  56. but this time is different.

  57. And with his disciples, he says,

  58. saying, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem,

  59. and the Son of Man shall be what?

  60. Delivered unto the chief priests and unto the scribes.

  61. And they shall do what?

  62. Condemn him to death.

  63. And shall deliver him to the Gentiles.

  64. And they shall mock him.

  65. And they shall scourge him.

  66. And they shall spit on him.

  67. And they shall kill him.

  68. And the third day he shall rise again.

  69. I want you to see here,

  70. Jesus told his disciples exactly what was going to take place.

  71. There was nothing that Jesus didn't already know was going to take place,

  72. as we're going to look here this morning.

  73. As the horrible things that men did to him

  74. was nothing that caught him off guard.

  75. He knew exactly when he entered that day,

  76. what was going to take place.

  77. He knew what was needed.

  78. He knew what was required.

  79. But you know, the good part is,

  80. he knew what the outcome was going to be.

  81. He knew why he was there.

  82. He knew what he was going to do for others.

  83. Because it was nothing was a surprise.

  84. He knew those things.

  85. He knew.

  86. But you know, the most important thing is he chose to go.

  87. Have you ever noticed sometimes in life,

  88. if we know something,

  89. especially if something's bad,

  90. we kind of want to delay.

  91. We want to hold off and say,

  92. well, maybe somebody will change their mind.

  93. I want you to understand,

  94. Jesus didn't hesitate to go.

  95. The Bible tells us he set his face towards Jerusalem.

  96. That's a phrase that means he went with intention.

  97. In other words,

  98. even knowing what was going to happen,

  99. he went and said,

  100. I don't care.

  101. There's a purpose.

  102. There's a cause.

  103. There's a reason.

  104. Because there's people that I love that need a Savior.

  105. The Bible tells us that Jesus commended his love towards us,

  106. and while we're yet sinners,

  107. Christ died for us.

  108. When we see what takes place,

  109. and he knew what was going to happen there,

  110. and I want you to understand,

  111. it wasn't a death wish.

  112. Some people try to play it out like Jesus had a death wish,

  113. trying to do things.

  114. Sometimes people try to become famous different ways.

  115. I want you to understand,

  116. that's not what happened.

  117. This is something that was set in place

  118. from the foundation of the world.

  119. It tells us in Ephesians chapter 1.

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  120. And we understand what's happening,

  121. and even throughout the Scripture,

  122. you'll find that God foretold what was going to happen.

  123. One of the passages of Scripture in the Old Testament this morning,

  124. that this time of year is a good time to read through,

  125. is Isaiah 53.

  126. Isaiah 53, that whole chapter talks about Jesus.

  127. It's a chapter in the Bible you'll find Jews stumble over.

  128. Because they understand it's talking about their Messiah,

  129. but it's not the Messiah they were looking for.

  130. It's not the one that they wanted,

  131. but it's the one God foretold,

  132. and understood, wanted them to know.

  133. You know, in verse 5 of Isaiah 53,

  134. it says,

  135. I want you to understand,

  136. that's a powerful passage

  137. that describes exactly

  138. what Christ was doing.

  139. He understood the cost,

  140. and there was a great cost to go to the cross.

  141. As we're going to look here this morning,

  142. the brutality that Christ faced,

  143. it's hard to describe

  144. to understand what took place.

  145. And when we see this,

  146. you know, Peter describes it this way

  147. in 1 Peter 3,

  148. it says,

  149. Christ also hath once suffered for sins,

  150. the just for the unjust,

  151. that He might do what?

  152. Bring us to God,

  153. being put to death in the flesh,

  154. but quickened by the Spirit.

  155. You know, Jesus went there

  156. because He wanted to bring

  157. you and I to God.

  158. He wants to bring your neighbor to God.

  159. He wants to bring people

  160. on the other side of the world to Him.

  161. Everything He did

  162. was for the sake of people.

  163. That was His purpose.

  164. That was His intention.

  165. And here Jesus is,

  166. He's coming,

  167. He's about to finish

  168. what He had come to accomplish.

  169. You know,

  170. I want you to understand that.

  171. Of all the brutality,

  172. all the things you could describe

  173. when it comes to the cross

  174. and the death of Jesus,

  175. that Jesus did it

  176. because He went,

  177. because He knew

  178. what was required

  179. to accomplish what was needed.

  180. He gave His life

  181. that it might be

  182. a sacrifice for our sin.

  183. So as we look here this morning,

  184. I want you to see here

  185. that as Jesus was there,

  186. He came to accomplish those things,

  187. and that was to take sin

  188. upon Himself,

  189. my sin and your sin.

  190. And He knew

  191. that was going to take place

  192. on the way to the cross.

  193. But we're going to see this morning,

  194. Jesus has now taken

  195. those steps to the cross.

  196. Not just figuratively,

  197. but literally.

  198. As we're going to see here

  199. this morning

  200. as they put that beam

  201. upon His shoulders

  202. to carry,

  203. to walk to the place

  204. that He was going to be crucified.

  205. You know,

  206. we see here

  207. that Pilate had attempted,

  208. we learned last week,

  209. that Pilate didn't want Jesus.

  210. He didn't understand

  211. Jesus was innocent.

  212. You know,

  213. He declared

  214. that He found no fault in Him,

  215. which is the exact picture

  216. that we see

  217. as the Passover Lamb,

  218. the one without spot

  219. or blemish.

  220. The one whose blood

  221. was good to cover the death

  222. and to cover the price of sin.

  223. Pilate attempted

  224. to release Jesus

  225. to no avail.

  226. All they did was cry more.

  227. If you remember,

  228. crucify Him,

  229. crucify Him.

  230. So Pilate here this morning

  231. we're going to see

  232. condemns an innocent man to die.

  233. That's an atrocity to itself

  234. when you consider

  235. here's one that knows

  236. somebody's innocent

  237. and says,

  238. I'm going to condemn you

  239. to death anyway.

  240. We're going to see here

  241. He takes

  242. and condemns

  243. an innocent man.

  244. No valid charge

  245. against Him,

  246. but now Jesus

  247. is going to step

  248. towards the cross.

  249. Notice here

  250. in verse 15,

  251. and so Pilate

  252. willing to content

  253. the people

  254. released Barabbas

  255. Son to them

  256. and delivered Jesus

  257. when He had scourged

  258. Him to be crucified.

  259. Here we see

  260. the Savior is condemned.

  261. You know,

  262. I want you to see

  263. as Jesus

  264. was released

  265. into the custody

  266. of the soldiers

  267. who led Him away

  268. to the courtyard

  269. as the soldiers,

  270. the others,

  271. were called together

  272. because they were

  273. going to do something,

  274. they were going to play

  275. what we might think

  276. is a very cruel game.

  277. This is something

  278. the soldiers

  279. often would do.

  280. The historians tell us

  281. that they would take

  282. a condemned prisoner

  283. and they would do

  284. atrocities

  285. and brutality.

  286. But we're going to see here

  287. they mock,

  288. they're going to mock Him,

  289. they're going to beat Him,

  290. we're going to see

  291. all that takes place.

  292. They went into the courtyard

  293. and the scourging

  294. would have commenced.

  295. That alone

  296. would have been

  297. a brutal beating,

  298. ripping flesh

  299. and bone

  300. from your body.

  301. They complete the scourging

  302. and they take

  303. and they sit Him down

  304. and they put a robe

  305. upon Him.

  306. Here's some men

  307. that had no compassion

  308. for the one

  309. that stood before them.

  310. Here's Jesus' back

  311. is bloody

  312. and bleeding

  313. and His face

  314. is barely recognizable

  315. from the beating

  316. that He had taken

  317. as His blood

  318. runs under the floor

  319. from the scourging

  320. that had taken place.

  321. They confront

  322. the whole band

  323. that had gathered together

  324. so what do they do?

  325. They take off

  326. His clothes,

  327. put a purple robe

  328. upon Him

  329. which would have been

  330. a faded Roman garment.

  331. They take a crown

  332. of thorns

  333. and place it

  334. upon His head.

  335. Now I want you

  336. to understand

  337. that the thorns

  338. they're talking about

  339. are not the thorns

  340. that you find

  341. on your common rose bush

  342. in America.

  343. Those are bad enough.

  344. The thorns

  345. they would have had

  346. would have been

  347. well over an inch long.

  348. It would have been

  349. woven into a crown

  350. that would have been

  351. placed on His head

  352. and it says

  353. they took a reed

  354. and started to smack Him

  355. on the head

  356. driving Him in.

  357. Mocking Him.

  358. The soldiers could do

  359. what they desired.

  360. Their only limitation

  361. on the soldiers

  362. was Jesus had to be alive

  363. when they walked Him

  364. up the hill.

  365. They'd heard about

  366. the charge of Him

  367. being King

  368. so they wanted

  369. to mock Him

  370. about it.

  371. Hail,

  372. King of the Jews!

  373. You'll notice

  374. what it tells them

  375. here in verse 18.

  376. It says,

  377. And He began

  378. to salute Him.

  379. Hail,

  380. King of the Jews!

  381. And they smote Him

  382. on the head

  383. with a reed

  384. and did spit on Him

  385. and bow their knees

  386. and worshipped Him.

  387. And when they had

  388. mocked Him

  389. they took off

  390. the purple from Him

  391. and put on His own clothes

  392. on Him

  393. and led Him out

  394. to be crucified.

  395. I want you to see

  396. this picture this morning

  397. as Jesus is

  398. on His way

  399. to the cross.

  400. You have a group

  401. of people

  402. who mock

  403. worshipping Jesus.

  404. You might say

  405. they understood

  406. the actions

  407. that were supposed

  408. to be.

  409. They were saying

  410. the things

  411. that you might say

  412. were the right things.

  413. Hail,

  414. Jesus,

  415. King!

  416. But you know,

  417. you can say

  418. the right thing

  419. and have the wrong heart

  420. and it becomes mocking.

  421. The mocking

  422. of who Jesus is,

  423. you know,

  424. is something

  425. that still continues

  426. today

  427. because we have

  428. a world

  429. that speaks

  430. about Jesus.

  431. We have a world

  432. that says

  433. we openly

  434. want to worship

  435. Jesus

  436. but they do nothing

  437. towards really

  438. understanding

  439. who Jesus is.

  440. He is nothing

  441. but just a commodity

  442. that they use

  443. or they move.

  444. Something they can

  445. play a game

  446. because there's no love,

  447. there's no desire

  448. to live for Him.

  449. They don't care

  450. about His word,

  451. His will.

  452. They don't care

  453. about His ways.

  454. You know,

  455. the Bible talks

  456. about that very clearly.

  457. It says that they,

  458. it talks about their lips.

  459. Isaiah 29,

    Isaiah 29:13

  460. verse 13,

  461. it says,

  462. Wherefore the Lord

  463. said,

  464. For as much

  465. as this people

  466. draw near to me

  467. with their mouth

  468. and with their lips

  469. do honor me

  470. but have removed

  471. their heart

  472. far from me

  473. and their fear

  474. toward me

  475. is taught

  476. by the precept

  477. of men.

  478. In other words,

  479. it's artificial.

  480. Today we have a lot

  481. of artificial religion

  482. that put Jesus up

  483. and say,

  484. Jesus,

  485. yeah,

  486. we'll recognize Him

  487. but we want to do

  488. our own thing.

  489. We can come together

  490. and say all the right things

  491. but we don't care

  492. about Jesus

  493. when it comes

  494. to our life.

  495. You know what?

  496. People are no different

  497. than the soldiers.

  498. You know,

  499. there's people

  500. who come to church

  501. to claim that they know Him

  502. by their words

  503. but will not truly

  504. come to Him

  505. in faith.

  506. You know,

  507. people might feel

  508. the conviction

  509. of the Holy Spirit

  510. and say,

  511. I can't make that decision.

  512. They refuse

  513. to listen

  514. to what God

  515. is working

  516. in their heart.

  517. They know

  518. that they're

  519. far from God.

  520. They know their life,

  521. their heart

  522. testifies to them

  523. that there's a problem

  524. but yet they won't

  525. turn to Him.

  526. They come

  527. and they feel good

  528. because they've set

  529. their time in church.

  530. I've got my duty

  531. checked off

  532. for the week.

  533. It looks good

  534. to everybody.

  535. You know,

  536. we see that they

  537. fail to turn

  538. and submit

  539. to His will

  540. instead of their own.

  541. You know,

  542. the reality of that

  543. is so clear.

  544. When it comes

  545. to the soldiers

  546. and the treatment

  547. of Jesus,

  548. we can see

  549. something else

  550. very important though

  551. because even though

  552. they treated Him

  553. like this,

  554. we see a great picture

  555. through this

  556. that we could talk,

  557. spend much time

  558. but I want you

  559. to point out

  560. of God's grace

  561. and mercy.

  562. Here's the creator

  563. of the universe

  564. being beaten

  565. and bruised

  566. and mocked

  567. and spit on

  568. and hit

  569. and all He

  570. had to do

  571. was say,

  572. take them out.

  573. He had the authority

  574. to call 10,000 angels

  575. to just destroy

  576. everything.

  577. If you have any question

  578. what that might look like,

  579. you can read in the Old Testament,

  580. one angel's pretty

  581. good thing to contest with.

  582. 10,000 would be devastating.

  583. And here's Jesus

  584. and He's taking

  585. the onslaught

  586. of abuse

  587. not to make Himself

  588. look good

  589. but for my benefit

  590. and yours.

  591. Turn over to 2 Corinthians

  592. for a moment.

  593. 2 Corinthians chapter 5

    2 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  594. because

  595. I want you to understand

  596. what's happening here.

  597. 2 Corinthians chapter 5

    2 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  598. it says,

  599. For He hath made Him

  600. to be sin for us

  601. who knew no sin.

  602. That we might be made

  603. the righteousness

  604. of God in Him.

  605. I want you to understand

  606. this morning

  607. the wages of sin

  608. is death.

  609. Jesus took

  610. my sin

  611. and your sin

  612. that day.

  613. He did everything

  614. that was needed.

  615. He took our punishment

  616. upon Himself.

  617. He became sin

  618. for us.

  619. That literally means

  620. He took upon Himself

  621. the penalty

  622. associated with it.

  623. That day on the cross

  624. I want you to understand

  625. Jesus was there

  626. in your place.

  627. What we find here

  628. is all this is taking place

  629. the time has come

  630. as Jesus begins

  631. to walk

  632. towards Calvary.

  633. Look at the end

  634. of verse 20

  635. and it says

  636. and they led Him out

  637. to crucify Him.

  638. Now the gospel accounts

  639. really give us

  640. a very light glimpse

  641. into a lot of things

  642. according

  643. of what happened.

  644. I want you to understand

  645. there's a lot of details

  646. it leaves out

  647. but it's details

  648. that aren't

  649. the important part.

  650. It gives us

  651. the important parts.

  652. What's the important part

  653. of what Jesus

  654. was there to do?

  655. What did Jesus accomplish?

  656. Because we could spend

  657. a lot of time

  658. talking about the brutality

  659. talking about all the things

  660. that take place

  661. but that's not

  662. the main point.

  663. The main point

  664. is you have a Savior

  665. who loves you

  666. and God wants you

  667. to know

  668. what He's done for you.

  669. He says

  670. I want you to understand

  671. what took place.

  672. It wasn't the brutality

  673. that took place.

  674. It was that

  675. I became sin

  676. for you.

  677. I took your sin

  678. and put it upon

  679. Him.

  680. Jesus took it.

  681. He paid for it.

  682. He took the wages

  683. of death

  684. your wages

  685. and paid for you.

  686. That's the point

  687. of the cross.

  688. But the time

  689. has come

  690. for Him to go

  691. because it still

  692. needs to be accomplished.

  693. You know

  694. the weight of the cross

  695. was heavy

  696. as Jesus

  697. would have been

  698. exhausted.

  699. I mean a lot of

  700. this time

  701. we've got to go back

  702. and think about

  703. He hadn't slept.

  704. He's been up

  705. over 24 hours

  706. at this point.

  707. It's almost

  708. 9 o'clock

  709. the next morning.

  710. He was up

  711. all the day before

  712. did all those things.

  713. He walked.

  714. He moved.

  715. They had the last supper.

  716. He had prayed

  717. in the garden.

  718. They had been arrested.

  719. He had been beaten

  720. and abused all night.

  721. And now it's 9 a.m.

  722. the next morning.

  723. That doesn't sound

  724. too enticing does it?

  725. Just the fact

  726. you've been up all night.

  727. It used to not bother me

  728. as much but I tell you what

  729. I appreciate it more

  730. now as I get older.

  731. You know up all night

  732. is not as near

  733. what it was

  734. when you're 20 years old.

  735. You know 20

  736. you can kind of

  737. shrug it off

  738. but you know

  739. when you get to

  740. my point in life

  741. and above

  742. it's like

  743. this is hard.

  744. It's hard if we haven't

  745. had any of the things

  746. that took place.

  747. Jesus with the

  748. dynamics that had happened

  749. he came unto his own

  750. and his own received him not.

  751. Rejection.

  752. The very one that came

  753. to give life

  754. is now being put to death.

  755. It's interesting

  756. that you find

  757. in verse 21

  758. this little

  759. note in between

  760. that they make mention of.

  761. You have one Simon of Cyrene

  762. you know.

  763. What a person

  764. to get

  765. I mean

  766. we think it's random

  767. I don't think there's

  768. anything random about it.

  769. But I tell you what

  770. you know

  771. you find these individuals

  772. in scripture

  773. that suddenly just

  774. pop out

  775. that God makes note of.

  776. I encourage you to study

  777. some things with him

  778. and his children

  779. because notice

  780. what it says

  781. and they compel

  782. one Simon of Cyrenean

  783. who passed by

  784. coming out of the country

  785. the father of Alexander

  786. and Rufus

  787. to bear his cross.

  788. One Simon of Cyrene

  789. here's Jesus

  790. is too weak

  791. to carry the cross

  792. and the Roman soldiers

  793. compel him

  794. to carry the burden.

  795. Now I want you to understand

  796. you get a lot of things

  797. in our mind today

  798. and we think

  799. you know

  800. we look at a cross

  801. and we think of this picture.

  802. When Jesus went

  803. to the cross that day

  804. the part he bore

  805. was the beam

  806. that was upon his shoulders.

  807. That was the part

  808. that they would take

  809. and make the condemned

  810. carry out.

  811. It was a beam

  812. he was going to be hung from

  813. and here's this Simon

  814. from a Greek city

  815. in North Africa.

  816. He's at the city

  817. with his family

  818. you know what that tells us?

  819. Here's a man

  820. that had come

  821. why was he in Jerusalem?

  822. It was Passover.

  823. You know

  824. we can make some assessments

  825. the Bible doesn't tell us

  826. but you know

  827. everything points to the fact

  828. that Simon was a man

  829. who did love God.

  830. He wanted to honor God.

  831. He was there

  832. with his family.

  833. It wasn't just a trip

  834. across town.

  835. They'd left

  836. earlier

  837. to get there

  838. for the Passover

  839. and here he is

  840. he's coming out

  841. of the country

  842. you've got to remember

  843. this is early in the morning

  844. he's trying to figure out

  845. what's happening

  846. and a Roman soldier

  847. takes him

  848. and compels him.

  849. Now that's an important word

  850. in other words

  851. Simon didn't say

  852. hey Jesus

  853. let me help you

  854. I want you to understand

  855. he was pulled

  856. out of the crowd.

  857. Roman soldiers

  858. could compel anybody

  859. to carry something

  860. for at least a mile.

  861. Remember Jesus said

  862. if they ask you

  863. to go a mile

  864. to go two

  865. this is the same principle

  866. that Jesus

  867. is talking about.

  868. Simon didn't

  869. it wasn't like

  870. well I don't feel like it

  871. Simon had no choice

  872. if he wanted to live

  873. but the Bible tells us

  874. that he took that burden

  875. and helped Jesus

  876. up to the place

  877. he was to be crucified.

  878. That day he was there

  879. with two children

  880. it's interesting

  881. that Mark's gospel

  882. mentions them

  883. you know

  884. when the Bible

  885. mentions people

  886. by name

  887. it tells you

  888. that the people

  889. it was written to

  890. knew who they were.

  891. It wasn't just

  892. a stranger

  893. that they were familiar with

  894. when the Bible

  895. mentions a name

  896. it means the people

  897. that it was originally

  898. written to

  899. understood who it is

  900. because why would you

  901. just make them generic

  902. when people know him.

  903. We see his two sons

  904. Rufus and Alexander

  905. if you want to do

  906. a little interesting things

  907. you can take some time

  908. and notice it

  909. and look up this name

  910. Rufus

  911. it's mentioned a few

  912. other times in scripture

  913. and we find he's a man

  914. that grew up

  915. to serve God.

  916. You can make a lot

  917. of speculation

  918. out of what may have

  919. took in place

  920. but I want you to see

  921. that God used

  922. this event

  923. to change Simon

  924. and his family's

  925. trajectory forever.

  926. They came to the Passover

  927. and came face to face

  928. with the Passover Lamb.

  929. 1 Corinthians 5

  930. 7 says

  931. for even Christ

  932. our Passover

  933. is sacrificed

  934. for us.

  935. You know today

  936. have you ever come

  937. face to face

  938. with the Lamb

  939. that is your Passover Lamb?

  940. The one who took

  941. and spilt his blood

  942. for you.

  943. Have you ever been saved

  944. by grace

  945. and that you can come

  946. and call upon him

  947. as your Savior?

  948. To trust him

  949. for the salvation

  950. that your soul

  951. requires

  952. that it needs.

  953. He can change

  954. your life

  955. and forever

  956. alter eternity.

  957. I want you to understand

  958. the importance

  959. of that.

  960. This passage

  961. goes on

  962. and

  963. look here

  964. at verse 22

  965. here

  966. and it says

  967. they bring him

  968. unto the place

  969. of Golgotha

  970. which is being

  971. interpreted

  972. the place

  973. of the skull

  974. and they gave him

  975. to drink wine

  976. mingled with myrrh

  977. but he received it not

  978. and when they

  979. had crucified him

  980. they parted his garments

  981. casting lots

  982. upon them

  983. and every man

  984. should take

  985. and it was the third hour

  986. and they crucified him

  987. and the superscription

  988. of the accusation

  989. was written

  990. over the king

  991. of the Jews

  992. and with him

  993. they crucified

  994. two thieves

  995. the one on his right hand

  996. and the other

  997. on his left

  998. and the scripture

  999. was fulfilled

  1000. which saith

  1001. that he was numbered

  1002. with the transgressors

1003. I want you to see here

  1004. the site

  1005. of the one crucified

1006. with a label over it

  1007. that says

  1008. king of the Jews

  1009. all that's taking place

  1010. and we find here

  1011. is the place

  1012. of the skull

  1013. located outside the city

  1014. it was about

  1015. the third hour

  1016. of the day

  1017. about 9 a.m.

  1018. He's raised up

  1019. that all may see

  1020. him fulfilled

  1021. the Bible says

  1022. he fulfilled scripture

  1023. in Isaiah 53

  1024. where it tells us

  1025. he was crucified

  1026. between the malefactors

  1027. we see here

  1028. this picture

1029. it's all referring to it

1030. but I want you to see

  1031. something more important

  1032. that Jesus said

  1033. about this moment

1034. turn over to John chapter 3

    John 3 chapter mention

  1035. quick this morning

  1036. John 3

  1037. when Jesus

  1038. is speaking to Nicodemus

  1039. early in his ministry

  1040. it says

  1041. as Moses lifted up

  1042. the serpent

  1043. in the wilderness

  1044. even so

1045. must the son of man

  1046. be lifted up

  1047. you can go back

  1048. and read your

  1049. Old Testament account

1050. I encourage you to do so

1051. because you don't have time

  1052. to go over that

  1053. this morning

  1054. but the picture was

  1055. that they had

1056. the serpent on the pole

1057. and they had to look

  1058. and live

  1059. that's the picture

  1060. you see

  1061. because notice

  1062. what he says

  1063. the son of man

  1064. would be lifted up

  1065. that whosoever

  1066. believeth in him

  1067. should what

  1068. not perish

  1069. but have what

  1070. eternal life

  1071. Jesus was lifted up

  1072. that you might see

  1073. and recognize him

  1074. for who he is

  1075. we could go into

1076. a lot of other prophecies

  1077. that were fulfilled

  1078. that day

1079. you know when you realize

  1080. that that day

  1081. on that hill

  1082. the death of Jesus

  1083. of Nazareth

  1084. and between

  1085. the two seas

  1086. were just business

  1087. as usual

  1088. for the crowd

  1089. there was nothing

  1090. unique to them

  1091. it was a blip

  1092. on the Roman radar

  1093. they didn't see

  1094. the significance

  1095. in what was happening

  1096. that day

  1097. but you know what

1098. the news of Jesus' death

  1099. made news in heaven

  1100. the father

  1101. witnessed the death

  1102. of the son

  1103. and he was

  1104. satisfied

  1105. sin's penalty

  1106. had been paid

  1107. sinners could be

  1108. redeemed

  1109. Jesus Christ

  1110. opened the way

  1111. to God

  1112. that will never

  1113. be closed

  1114. now anyone

  1115. who comes to him

  1116. by faith

  1117. trusting his death

  1118. on the cross

  1119. his death

  1120. signifies our sin

  1121. our own responsibility

  1122. to our sin

  1123. that Jesus said

  1124. I will take

  1125. for you

  1126. if you recognize

  1127. that you're a sinner

  1128. that needs a savior

1129. I want you to understand

  1130. what Jesus did

  1131. that day

  1132. is sufficient

  1133. for everyone

1134. but I want you to understand

  1135. it's only efficient

  1136. if it's used

  1137. sufficient

  1138. is an outstanding thought

  1139. but unless it's applied

  1140. unless it's used

  1141. personally

  1142. it does no good

  1143. you know

  1144. it's like people

  1145. you could have food

  1146. in the refrigerator

  1147. and starve to death

  1148. if you choose

  1149. not to eat it

  1150. you know the reality

  1151. is Jesus

  1152. said I've satisfied

  1153. I've completed

  1154. everything that's required

  1155. it's sufficient

  1156. for all

  1157. but unless

  1158. you call upon him

  1159. unless you take

  1160. his salvation

  1161. to say I know

  1162. I'm a sinner

  1163. that deserve

  1164. what Jesus got

  1165. and ask by faith

  1166. to say

  1167. I trust

  1168. him

  1169. that what he did

  1170. that day

  1171. is applied

  1172. to me

  1173. that happens

  1174. in a moment

  1175. in an instant

  1176. John 3 36

  1177. and well

1178. I want you to see this

  1179. look at John 3 36

  1180. it says

  1181. he that believeth

  1182. on the son

  1183. hath everlasting life

  1184. and he that believeth

  1185. not the son

  1186. shall not see life

1187. I want you to understand

  1188. this points to something

  1189. very important

  1190. it's

  1191. who do you see

  1192. Jesus as

  1193. because there's a lot

  1194. of people who see

1195. Jesus as just a good

  1196. person

  1197. they see Jesus

  1198. as a good teacher

  1199. he may meet those

  1200. qualifications

  1201. but the qualification

  1202. that's most important

  1203. is far greater

  1204. those are just subnotes

  1205. unless you realize

  1206. who Jesus is

  1207. and that he died

  1208. for you

  1209. in your place

  1210. that that day

  1211. he took

  1212. your sin

  1213. upon it

  1214. he that believeth

  1215. not the son

  1216. if you don't believe

  1217. that Jesus

  1218. is the one

  1219. who died

  1220. for your sin

  1221. you miss everything

  1222. it's not just

  1223. believing that he is

  1224. but believing in

  1225. what he's done

  1226. for you

  1227. because notice

  1228. it says

1229. you shall not see life

1230. but the wrath of God

  1231. abideth on him

  1232. very simply

  1233. it's either

  1234. you have

  1235. God's judgment coming

  1236. or your judgment

  1237. covered under the blood

  1238. of Jesus Christ

  1239. this morning

  1240. his heads are bowed

  1241. and eyes are closed

  1242. for a moment

1243. I want you to consider

  1244. a few things here

  1245. this morning

  1246. even your own self

  1247. has there been

  1248. a moment in time

  1249. when you called

  1250. upon the Savior

  1251. not just saying

  1252. Jesus I believe

  1253. in you

  1254. I believe

  1255. about you

  1256. but saying

  1257. Lord

  1258. I know

  1259. that I'm a sinner

1260. and that what you did

  1261. was for me

  1262. to call upon him

  1263. just ask Christ

  1264. to save you

1265. if you've never done that

  1266. I encourage you

  1267. this morning

  1268. let's make today

  1269. the day of salvation

  1270. if God's working

  1271. on your heart

  1272. don't wait

  1273. there's no greater joy

  1274. than having it settled

  1275. but maybe you're here

  1276. this morning also

  1277. and you know

  1278. that you're saved

  1279. but you still struggle

  1280. with the reality

  1281. of what's happened

  1282. maybe there's some time

  1283. you need to spend

  1284. with the Lord

  1285. maybe there's some things

1286. you need to get right

  1287. with God

  1288. saying Lord

  1289. you covered so much

  1290. for me

  1291. can I not

  1292. take a moment

1293. to be right with you

  1294. what about you today

  1295. heavenly fathers

1296. we just come before you

  1297. this morning Lord

  1298. we thank you

  1299. and praise you

  1300. for the day

  1301. for the opportunity

  1302. Lord

  1303. as we understand

  1304. the reality

  1305. of who you are

  1306. and what you've done

  1307. Lord I pray

1308. just work in a mighty way

  1309. Lord I pray

  1310. that your spirit

  1311. would convict

  1312. where convictions needed

  1313. encourage

  1314. where encouragements needed

  1315. Lord I pray

  1316. that no one

  1317. would depart here today

1318. that doesn't have it settled

  1319. for sure with you

  1320. of where they stand

  1321. whether they're your child

  1322. or that your wrath

  1323. abides on them

  1324. Lord help them not

  1325. to abide

  1326. to leave today

  1327. with that wrath

  1328. abiding upon them

  1329. that they would look

  1330. to you

  1331. and live

1332. and Lord we ask it all

  1333. in your precious name

  1334. Amen

  1335. as heads are bowed
