  1. This is in 1 Kings, and so if you find 2 Kings, 1 Kings shouldn't be hard to find, especially

  2. ! the last chapter.

  3. And so as we're going to continue in our series here looking at the kings of Israel.

  4. And tonight we're going to be looking at Isaiah.

  5. And we're going to see here as we began and closed off with Jehoshaphat.

  6. This kind of crosses over a little bit with Jehoshaphat here tonight.

  7. Because he had interactions with him.

  8. And so we're going to, as we begin looking here, Ahab, if you remember, Isaiah's father

  9. there had been slain in battle against Syria.

  10. And Ahab, or Isaiah, took the throne even though Jehoshaphat escaped the same battle with his

  11. life.

  12. You know, if you remember all that dynamic that took place.

  13. Is that not on?

  14. We find that as Jehoshaphat, what's that?

  15. Need some batteries.

  16. We'll see how long it lasts.

  17. All right.

  18. Back to where we were.

  19. You know, if you remember though, that Jehoshaphat had made alliance with Ahab and went into battle.

  20. And God corrected him.

  21. He sent somebody, he sent the prophet to correct him and to say, what are you doing working

  22. with those that stand against God?

  23. And we saw how that ended, how he barely escaped with his life, but Ahab was killed.

  24. But in that, as he came back safely and got things straightened out a little bit with God

  25. and began to do what was right.

  26. Ahab, Isaiah took the throne there in Israel and Jehoshaphat continued to have interactions

  27. with him.

  28. Because you remember last week, we talked about that at the end of Jehoshaphat's reign that

  29. he had, they went, sent the ships to make a commercial partnership and the ships were destroyed.

  30. And he kind of broke off things from there.

  31. But, you know, sometimes, you know, we can learn a lot from Jehoshaphat too, because sometimes

  32. we can be hard headed.

  33. It takes more than one round of the lesson for us to get our attention.

  34. You know, and we see that with Jehoshaphat and his continued dynamic with the northern

  35. tribes of Israel there.

  36. And so, but we're going to look tonight specifically at Isaiah.

  37. He was a king that had a very short and troublesome time as king.

  38. You know, the Bible, excuse me, reveals to us that he died and didn't even have his kingdom

  39. two years.

  40. And it's really kind of a dramatic and tragic ending as we're going to look and see here

  41. as he walks through these couple of years.

  42. And we find here in 1 Kings 22, we see him introduced, look there in verse 41, it says,

  43. Isaiah, the son of Ahab, began to reign over Israel and Samaria, the 17th year of Jehoshaphat,

  44. king of Judah, and reigned two years over Israel.

  45. And so we see here, it's that he began to reign over Israel.

  46. And we see as he begins, we find him introduced in 1 Kings chapter 22.

    1 Kings 22 chapter mention

  47. Then we find the rest of the story in 2 Kings chapter 1.

    2 Kings 1 chapter mention

  48. And so I just want to talk just a little bit of stuff so people have a help understanding,

  49. because we separate these books, but to them, 1 and 2 Kings would be like two volumes of the

  50. same book.

  51. Okay?

  52. So in other words, in the Bible, 1 and 2 Kings is like one continuous book, but there was

  53. enough material, they had two volumes to it.

  54. You know?

  55. How many like books they have two volumes?

  56. Yeah?

  57. Yeah?

  58. Unless they're informational stuff, two volumes is probably too much most of the time, you

  59. know?

  60. I don't know of anybody that says, I want the novel that takes the second book.

  61. You know?

  62. But I want you to understand, these are together, and so you'll see this flow as we walk through,

  63. even though it's divided in your scripture here, it's a continuous flow, you might say,

  64. time-wise in this.

  65. And so, 1 Kings ends by a short introduction and overview, but 2 Kings gives us what you

  66. might say the old Paul Harvey rest of the story.

  67. You know?

  68. Gets the introduction, and then the rest of the story comes in 2 Kings, and describes what

  69. had happened.

  70. And so, we see here, as I had seen his father and mother reject the Lord.

  71. Remember?

  72. Because who was Uzziah's father and mother?

  73. Ahab, and who's his famous mom?

  74. Jezebel.

  75. And we know that they were wicked.

  76. They were very wicked individuals, and the Bible makes it clear here.

  77. Look here in verse 52 of chapter 1, or chapter 22 of 1 Kings.

  78. It says,

  79. And he did evil in the sight of the Lord, and walked in the way of his father, and the way

  80. of his mother, and the way of Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin.

  81. For he served Baal, and he worshipped him, and provoked to anger the Lord God of Israel,

  82. according all that his father had done.

  83. You know, he was walking in the footsteps of his parents.

  84. He was walking in the footsteps that his parents had established for him.

  85. You know, that he had seen displayed in how they responded, the priorities they put.

  86. You know, as a parent, the priorities you put in your life impacts your children.

  87. The places and the priority that you put on the things in life will impact your family.

  88. It makes a dramatic impact, and we see here directly, God ties it directly to his parents

  89. and the influence of the parents.

  90. You know, I want you to know that as a parent, as a Christian, even trying to raise godly children

  91. are a challenge.

  92. But you know what?

  93. If you're ungodly and totally against God, those children are set back at a great disadvantage

  94. sometimes.

  95. Because all they see is that which is against God.

  96. And so we need to understand the importance of what's taking place here and how God is

  97. describing these things.

  98. Because notice the footprints that he leaves.

  99. He says he did evil in the sight of the Lord.

  100. You know, did evil, followed in the way of his father and mother.

  101. He was like the kings before him.

  102. It goes back to the first king of the northern tribes, Jeroboam, that made Israel to sin.

  103. Remember, he set up a false worship within the nation to keep people from going to worship

  104. God in Jerusalem.

  105. You know, his allegiance was to Baal in both service and worship.

  106. His first thought was towards worshiping the god of the land, Baal.

  107. And we'll talk about that more in just a little bit.

  108. But I want you to understand that this stirred the Lord to anger.

  109. Look at the end of verse 53 here.

  110. It says, and provoked to anger the Lord God of Israel.

  111. You know, I want you to understand, God, some people think God is angry, but God is provoked.

  112. And I want you to understand why God is angry when he gets provoked.

  113. I want you to go back.

  114. If you wanted to spend time, you could read the beginning of this book up to this point.

  115. And consider how many things had God done for Israel.

  116. How he had protected them, how he had brought them through, how he provided for them into

  117. the land.

  118. You know, all those things.

  119. And Israel just basically thumbed their nose at him and said, we don't want you.

  120. I want you to understand that God is still even dealing now with Isaiah.

  121. In this passage, I want you to see, even though Isaiah had rejected God, God is still trying

  122. to deal with him.

  123. God's still trying to get his attention.

  124. You know, even today, people don't realize how much God's trying to get their attention

  125. that they might understand who he is or remember who he is.

  126. And we're going to see here that even in Isaiah, all the way to the end, he made a choice to

  127. reject God.

  128. And people sometimes, sadly, make a choice to reject God.

  129. But I want you to see here what took place.

  130. Because the injury of Isaiah, that's the first thing we're going to look at is his injury here.

  131. And we're going to see here as we get into chapter one of the second Kings, we find here in verse

  132. one, it says, then Moab rebelled against Israel after the death of Ahab.

  133. And Isaiah fell down through the lattice in his upper chamber that was in Samaria and was

  134. sick.

  135. And he sent messengers and said unto them, go inquire of Beelzebub, the God of Ekron, whether

  136. I shall recover of this disease.

  137. You know, I want you to see here, it wasn't long after Ahab, his father had died, that

  138. the king of Moab saw an opportunity to rebel.

  139. And this is something you have to keep in mind.

  140. And we'll talk about this a little more when we get into chapter three, some of the things

  141. that were taking place there.

  142. But Moab, when they heard Ahab was dead, they said, we're not going to give tribute anymore.

  143. We're not going to pay the tribute that went all the way back to David and Solomon, went

  144. all the way back through the United Kingdom.

  145. And we're going to see here that they refused because their tribute, we'll learn over in chapter

  146. three, was 200,000 animals a year.

  147. 100,000 lambs and 100,000 rams with their wool.

  148. Every year was what they were supposed to pay in tribute.

  149. And they quit wanting to pay the tribute.

  150. They rebelled against them.

  151. And so we might say his first injury here tonight was a political one because he seemed

  152. weak.

  153. And Moab rebelled and refused to give tribute.

  154. You know, even in the fact it doesn't give us an order of how these things happen.

  155. Maybe Ahab died and his son Haziah took the throne and he fell through the lattice and hurt

  156. himself and he's in bed.

  157. So now you have a new king that's injured and can't get up and do something.

  158. And the enemy's saying, hey, this is a good time.

  159. This is a good time to move forward.

  160. And, and, but we see here that second was a physical injury that occurred when he fell

  161. from the balcony in Samaria and sustained a grave injury.

  162. You'll notice what it tells us here.

  163. It says that he was sick and he sent messengers because he fell through the lattice in his

  164. upper chamber.

  165. In other words, he was on the second story or at least two stories up and fell off and

  166. sustained an injury.

  167. We know he fell from through the lattice and we don't know why he fell.

  168. You know, you, it's always funny reading commentators.

  169. They had all sorts of speculations, you know, that might have done it.

  170. But you know, the Lord doesn't tell us exactly why, but just says that it happened.

  171. You know, because sometimes the why doesn't matter the fact that it happened.

  172. And so I want you to see here tonight as he has fallen from the balcony and sustained this

  173. great grave injury.

  174. You know, he's not sure he's going to recover, but we find here that a few things, it's ironic

  175. that, you know, turn to Deuteronomy chapter 22 for a moment because he falls through the

    Deuteronomy 22 chapter mention

  176. lattice of the upper.

  177. And it's just ironic that you find that God had given him some specific instruction about

  178. second story and higher buildings.

  179. You know, here in Deuteronomy 22 and verse 8, as they're coming out of the land of Egypt,

  180. it says, when thou buildest a new house and thou shalt make a battlement for the roof and

  181. thou shalt not bring blood upon thine house if any man fall from thence.

  182. In other words, God says, make sure when you got a second story that it has secure railings

  183. so that the people don't fall.

  184. You know, when you read that and you read through Deuteronomy chapter 22, it's kind of an odd

    Deuteronomy 22 chapter mention

  185. place.

  186. It's one of them verses that just like, and then you look at this and it's like, well,

  187. if Isaiah would have been reading and understanding God's instruction, he would have said, hey,

  188. maybe I need to fix that.

  189. You know, I think sometimes we miss what God has instructed us to do and then wonder why

  190. it happened.

  191. And God gives him instruction, but we see here that he was not going to recover from the fall

  192. and Isaiah wanted to know what the future held for him.

  193. Would he recover?

  194. So what's he do?

  195. We find next, not only his injury, but we see the inquiry of Isaiah.

  196. Isaiah here is, he sends forth a messenger, not to find a prophet of God, but to go to Beelzebub.

  197. Now, you'll find this name throughout the scripture because he sends a messenger with a question

  198. about his future to a city called Ekron.

  199. Ekron is where the temple of Beelzebub was built.

  200. Now, Ekron should sound familiar.

  201. It's mentioned many times in the Old Testament.

  202. It's brought up and many things happened there.

  203. You know, if you remember, if you go back and think back to when they lost the Ark of the

  204. Covenant in battle under Saul.

  205. You remember that when they brought, they marched out the covenant and they were relying on the

  206. Ark of the Covenant that was going to save them?

  207. And they forgot the fact that it isn't the Ark of the Covenant that saved them, it's the

  208. God that's the one the Ark represented that saved them.

  209. You know, I mean, that's a whole nother lesson for another day, but people get foolish, you

  210. know, it's kind of like my Bible is going to protect me.

  211. I want you to understand that if you don't know the God of the Bible, this is just a bunch

  212. of pages.

  213. It's not supernatural because it's printed on paper.

  214. It's supernatural because it's the Word of God.

  215. You know, and I want you to see here, but, you know, if you think back, 1 Samuel chapter

    1 Samuel 5 chapter mention

  216. 5 and verse 10, Ekron was the last place the Ark of the Covenant departed before it went

  217. back into Israel.

  218. And it's funny because it didn't stay there very long.

  219. Ekron was ready to go, ready to get rid of it, you know.

  220. In verse 10 of 1 Samuel chapter 5, it says they brought about the Ark of the God of Israel

    1 Samuel 5 chapter mention

  221. to slay us and our people.

  222. In other words, at this point, they're looking and saying, Israel, let us take it because

  223. they want it to destroy us.

  224. You know, they're ready to get it out of town.

  225. If you can go back and read through all the things that happened when the Ark went from

  226. city to city, and when they put it in the temples that the Philistines had, and all the

  227. things that took place.

  228. But it was here that Uzziah sends his messenger to inquire of the God of the Philistines for

  229. an answer.

  230. You know, he should have known from, if he'd have read his Bible, that God already told

  231. him that God of the Philistines have no power.

  232. But you know what?

  233. We search a lot of things that have no power.

  234. He wanted to know the future.

  235. You know, a lot of people today do a lot of things trying to find out their future.

  236. There's a big rise in mysticism and astrological signs and all the things that people seek

  237. after to try to find the future.

  238. They worry about a future that they forget that God tells us the important part of your

  239. future.

  240. Because your future is only going to be one place or another.

  241. You know?

  242. I want you to understand that here he is.

  243. He's seeking a Philistine God for the answer.

  244. And so he sends out his messenger.

  245. Now notice here, as we find here, it says in verse 3, we find the instruction of Elijah.

  246. The instructions given to Elijah.

  247. Here's Elijah jumping back on the scene again.

  248. You know?

  249. I don't know what Elijah did in the meantime.

  250. The Bible doesn't tell us, but he always seems to show up for big events.

  251. You know, God always sends them out for the big events of things and to confront the kings.

  252. And we see this.

  253. It says, look at verse 3,

  254. But the angel of the Lord said to Elijah the Tishbite,

  255. Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria,

  256. and say unto them,

  257. Is it not because there is not a God in Israel that you go to inquire of Beelzebub, the god of Ekron?

  258. Now therefore, thus saith the Lord,

  259. Thou shalt not come down from that bed on which thou art gone up,

  260. but thou shalt surely die.

  261. And Elijah departed.

  262. You know?

  263. So here we find the Lord here once again is gracious

  264. because instead of allowing him to go first to require a false god,

  265. God intervenes and sends Elijah.

  266. God sends Elijah.

  267. You know, and sometimes we think, well, God is judging him.

  268. No, God's being merciful.

  269. Think about one more opportunity.

  270. One more opportunity to make a difference.

  271. He's there, and we find here what he,

  272. the receiving that he had, you know,

  273. basically the instruction he gave was a very clear message.

  274. You know?

  275. Elijah comes on the scene and says,

  276. Don't inquire of something else.

  277. You only need to be concerned about one thing.

  278. You know, just as Jesus spoke about in Luke 13, 3,

  279. where he says, I tell you, nay, but except you repent,

  280. you shall all likewise perish.

  281. He's telling them the truth.

  282. You know, we find here that Elijah arrives quickly on the scene

  283. and then departs again.

  284. You know?

  285. We're going to find him on the hillside and, you know,

  286. waiting here in just a little bit.

  287. But this greatly shortened the trip for Haziah's messenger

  288. because it was a 40-mile trip from Samaria to Ekron.

  289. But the messenger shows back up to Haziah right away.

  290. So basically, we can understand that it wasn't very far

  291. outside the city of Samaria that we find that his messengers

  292. were confronted by Elijah.

  293. That is, the messengers confronted him

  294. and arrives and gives him a message.

  295. He says, Go on back.

  296. You know?

  297. The multi-day trip was suddenly shorted

  298. as he returned to the king

  299. with Elijah's message of demise.

  300. He received Elijah's message.

  301. And he gets there.

  302. Look at verse 5.

  303. And when the messengers turned back unto him

  304. and said unto him,

  305. Why ye now turn back?

  306. You know?

  307. He's going, Why are you here so soon?

  308. You couldn't have went that fast.

  309. You know?

  310. You couldn't get to Ekron and back

  311. in the time you've been gone.

  312. What are you doing here?

  313. I sent you there.

  314. You know?

  315. And so they give the report to the king.

  316. You know?

  317. What they received, they reported.

  318. We see here in verse 6,

  319. And they said unto him,

  320. There came up a man to meet us,

  321. and said unto us,

  322. Go, turn again unto the king that sent you,

  323. and say unto him,

  324. Thus saith the Lord,

  325. Is it not because there's not a God in Israel

  326. that thou sendest to inquire Beelzeb of the God of Ekron?

  327. Therefore thou shalt not come down from that bed

  328. on which thou art gone up,

  329. but shalt surely die.

  330. Now I want you to see here the report

  331. that was given about a man

  332. that they met in the way

  333. with instruction from the Lord.

  334. The Lord God of Israel is asking a relevant question.

  335. The Lord was the one that established

  336. everything they had.

  337. He says,

  338. While you're searching someplace else,

  339. I'm still here.

  340. I haven't gone anyplace.

  341. You know?

  342. How true as it is today,

  343. people want to get rid of God,

  344. and God says,

  345. I haven't gone anyplace.

  346. I'm still here.

  347. I'm the same yesterday, today, and forever.

  348. He hasn't changed who he is,

  349. or what he does,

  350. and he hasn't changed the requirements

  351. to get into heaven.

  352. Everything is still the same.

  353. And he was the one that brought them up out of Egypt

  354. and gave them what they possessed.

  355. Is there not a God here you could ask?

  356. You know, basically that's what he's asking.

  357. He says,

  358. Don't you know there's a God here already

  359. that is far greater than any of the others?

  360. He gives them the instructions,

  361. and why do you seek another?

  362. And he's asking,

  363. he's seeking Beelzebub.

  364. Beelzebub.

  365. Now the name there is interesting

  366. when you study this a little bit,

  367. and I'll give you a little insight,

  368. because Beelzebub means this,

  369. Lord of the Flies.

  370. He was called the Dung God.

  371. Rather interesting,

  372. why would you go

  373. ask something that represents death about life?

  374. It's interesting that they would go

  375. and ask something

  376. that's associated with death,

  377. because you know who shows up first after you die?

  378. The flies.

  379. It doesn't matter whether you're rich or poor.

  380. Guess what's going to show up?

  381. The flies are going to show up.

  382. And we see here that in Ekron,

  383. God had already shown his dominion over their God.

  384. I mean, we talked about that in 1 Samuel.

  385. And we see here Beelzebub was the God they would go to,

  386. and this is interesting.

  387. They tell us they went for medical and health advice

  388. when they were seeking something.

  389. And it's like,

  390. makes you just shake your head, doesn't it,

  391. when you understand the picture?

  392. It's like,

  393. why would you go to the Lord of the flies

  394. to get an idea of whether you're going to live or die?

  395. Head in the wrong direction.

  396. They would inquire about,

  397. from the God of the flies,

  398. for health concerns.

  399. You know, today,

  400. it's kind of funny,

  401. because here they're asking,

  402. he's going to a God

  403. that represents something

  404. that's going to give nothing but cause your problems.

  405. And today,

  406. you know,

  407. many people do the same thing.

  408. They inquire for answer in places

  409. that just perpetuate their misery.

  410. They miss what they have,

  411. what God has given to us.

  412. And when you seek to the flies

  413. for an answer about death,

  414. instead of seeking to the God who gives life,

  415. it's important to see the picture here.

  416. He delivers here the rest of the story

  417. about what he said.

  418. The king and prophet said,

  419. you're going to not get out of that bed,

  420. and you're not long for this world.

  421. Now, it says messengers.

  422. I wonder which one drew that card.

  423. You know,

  424. you're the one that gets to tell the king that part.

  425. You know,

  426. you're not going to get up.

  427. You're going to die in that bed.

  428. And so what's Uzziah do?

  429. He goes,

  430. he asks a question.

  431. Look in verse 7,

  432. and he said unto them,

  433. what manner of man was he

  434. that came up to meet you

  435. and told you these words?

  436. He's like,

  437. I think I have a few ideas,

  438. but he was like,

  439. I want to know what he looked like.

  440. Who is this guy?

  441. Give me a report

  442. so we can put out the wanted poster.

  443. And when he gets the description,

  444. we're going to find out

  445. there was already a wanted poster

  446. because Uzziah's mom

  447. had put out a death warrant upon him

  448. before she died.

  449. And we see the identity

  450. of the prophet here in verse 7.

  451. And Uzziah was suspicious

  452. about the identity

  453. about the identity

  454. of the prophet

  455. there that had stopped them.

  456. And he had seen

  457. a bold prophet like this

  458. before in his life.

  459. You've got to remember,

  460. Uzziah was old enough,

  461. he would have most likely

  462. seen what took place

  463. on Mount Carmel.

  464. And his parents

  465. that were promoting Baal

  466. to worship him,

  467. I imagine they had him

  468. there on the mount that day

  469. and saw what Elijah did.

  470. I imagine he was very familiar

  471. with Elijah.

  472. Because he asked,

  473. what did he look like?

  474. Look at verse 8

  475. and it says,

  476. and they answered him,

  477. he was a hairy man

  478. and girt with a girdle of leather

  479. about his loins.

  480. So here he is,

  481. he gives this description.

  482. He's a hairy man

  483. with a leather belt

  484. and he looks kind of rough

  485. and he speaks kind of rough

  486. and you know what?

  487. Uzziah looks at it

  488. and hears that

  489. and he goes,

  490. you know what?

  491. Notice what he says

  492. in verse 8.

  493. He says,

  494. it is Elijah the Tishbite.

  495. He says,

  496. I've met him before.

  497. I know who you're talking about.

  498. He's one that's going to be

  499. bold enough to come,

  500. the prophet that caused

  501. the drought,

  502. that called down fire

  503. from heaven,

  504. the prophet that killed

  505. the 400 prophets of Baal

  506. on Mount Carmel,

  507. the one that mom and dad hated.

  508. You know,

  509. the one that already had

  510. a bounty on his head.

  511. He goes,

  512. yeah,

  513. I know Elijah.

  514. And so what's he do?

  515. Look at verse 9.

  516. We see here the instructions

  517. to capture Elijah.

  518. You know,

  519. look at verse 9 here.

  520. And then,

  521. the king sent unto him

  522. a captain of 50 with his 50.

  523. And he went up to him

  524. and beheld he sat

  525. on top of a hill

  526. and he spake unto him,

  527. thou man of God,

  528. the king has said,

  529. come down.

  530. Now,

  531. you know,

  532. the instructions

  533. to capture here.

  534. Here,

  535. Isaiah saw an opportunity

  536. to fulfill

  537. to fulfill his mother's wish

  538. to see this prophet killed.

  539. So what's he do?

  540. You know,

  541. like anybody would do,

  542. you know,

  543. you got one man

  544. sitting alone

  545. on the hillside

  546. and they send out

  547. 51 people

  548. to go get him.

  549. You know,

  550. here they send out

  551. 51 people.

  552. The captain

  553. with his 50.

  554. 51 armed men

  555. go out to get him.

  556. You know,

  557. while the Bible

  558. doesn't tell us,

  559. I imagine here

  560. this picture of Elijah

  561. sitting up on

  562. a hillside

  563. that was probably

  564. difficult to get up

  565. or even get behind

  566. because he's sitting

  567. there on the hilltop

  568. and the captain

  569. of the 50s comes up

  570. and looks up at him

  571. and says,

  572. come down here.

  573. Commands him

  574. to come down

  575. so he could arrest him.

  576. You know,

  577. let's read through

  578. this account

  579. of what happened

  580. and it tells us here,

  581. he went up unto him

  582. and behold,

  583. he sat on top

  584. of the hill

  585. and he spake unto him,

  586. thou man of God,

  587. the king has said,

  588. come down.

  589. Now that's interesting.

  590. He recognizes

  591. that he's a man of God

  592. but he says the king

  593. has more authority

  594. than your God

  595. and commands him

  596. to come down.

  597. Now this is a

  598. pretty famous happening.

  599. You'll find

  600. even the disciples

  601. referred to this

  602. later on

  603. in the New Testament.

  604. They say,

  605. Lord,

  606. they offended you.

  607. Call down fire

  608. from heaven

  609. like Elijah.

  610. You know,

  611. I imagine

  612. the Jewish boys

  613. really loved this passage.

  614. You know,

  615. they probably loved

  616. when the parents

  617. would read through this

  618. going,

  619. yeah,

  620. they got what

  621. they deserved.

  622. You know,

  623. they were probably

  624. excited about it.

  625. But I want you

  626. to see here

  627. what takes place

  628. and Elijah answered

  629. in verse 10

  630. and said to the

  631. captain of the 50,

  632. if I be a man of God

  633. then let fire

  634. come down from heaven

  635. and consume

  636. thee and thy 50.

  637. You know what,

  638. Elijah?

  639. He's not bragging.

  640. He's just saying,

  641. if God is on my side,

  642. this is what's

  643. going to happen.

  644. He's not saying

  645. by the power of Elijah,

  646. he says,

  647. by the power of my God,

  648. there's going to be fire

  649. come down from heaven.

  650. And look what happened

  651. here as he said

  652. that,

  653. and there came down

  654. fire from heaven

  655. and consumed him

  656. and his 50.

  657. So you have this 51 guys,

  658. one with his mouth open

  659. and trying to give commands

  660. that gets consumed.

  661. I imagine when it talks

  662. about this,

  663. I look back at earlier,

  664. if you remember,

  665. when Elijah was on

  666. Mount Carmel

  667. and the fire came down

  668. from heaven,

  669. what happened to the

  670. sacrifice in the altar

  671. that day?

  672. Even the stones were gone.

  673. I imagine this was

  674. the same fire.

  675. There probably wasn't

  676. nothing but the burn mark

  677. left,

  678. which makes it really

  679. irony when you see

  680. what happens next.

  681. You know,

  682. the ground is probably

  683. a little bit singed

  684. when that happens.

  685. So the word gets back

  686. that when these guys

  687. don't show back up,

  688. look at verse 11,

  689. again also he sent unto him

  690. another captain of 50

  691. with his 50.

  692. And he answered

  693. and said unto him,

  694. O man of God,

  695. thus hath the king said,

  696. come down quickly.

  697. You know,

  698. I want you to catch this

  699. for a moment.

  700. The first guy tried

  701. to be bold

  702. and instruct Elijah

  703. of what he was supposed

  704. to do,

  705. and the next guy

  706. gets even more arrogant.

  707. He says,

  708. if I've told you once,

  709. I'm not going to tell you again,

  710. get down here

  711. like a parent talks

  712. to a little kid.

  713. Come down quickly.

  714. Now,

  715. I want you to catch

  716. the irony of this

  717. because he's standing

  718. in the burn zone.

  719. I think Elijah was

  720. on the same spot

  721. on the same hill

  722. waiting for him.

  723. You march up there

  724. and you're all arrogant

  725. and you fail to look down

  726. to see what happened

  727. to the previous ones.

  728. And he gives them,

  729. get down here now,

  730. you know,

  731. even more demanding.

  732. To which,

  733. notice what Elijah answers.

  734. Verse 12,

  735. and Elijah answered

  736. a sin of them,

  737. if I be a man of God,

  738. let fire come down

  739. from heaven

  740. and consume thee

  741. in thy fifty

  742. and the fire of God

  743. came down from heaven

  744. and consumed him

  745. in his fifty.

  746. So now you have

  747. a hundred and two guys

  748. incinerated.

  749. I imagine it incinerated

  750. their gear,

  751. I imagine it incinerated

  752. everything about them.

  753. So what does Isaiah do?

  754. Let's try this

  755. a third time.

  756. That makes sense,

  757. you know.

  758. The sad part is

  759. we can be like Isaiah

  760. a lot of times.

  761. God makes it very clear

  762. what we ought to do

  763. and we still try

  764. to move forward

  765. even though God's

  766. made the answer

  767. pretty clear.

  768. But notice here,

  769. he sends out

  770. another fifty

  771. and look at verse 13.

  772. He sent again

  773. a captain of the

  774. third fifty

  775. and his fifty.

  776. And the third

  777. captain of the fifty

  778. went up and came

  779. and fell on his knees

  780. before Elijah

  781. and besought him

  782. and said unto him,

  783. O man of God,

  784. I pray thee,

  785. let my life

  786. and the life

  787. of these fifty

  788. thy servants

  789. be precious

  790. in thy sight.

  791. Now notice,

  792. we know that

  793. there was something

  794. that he understood

  795. what happened

  796. to the previous ones

  797. because look at

  798. the next verse.

  799. Behold,

  800. there was fire

  801. come down from heaven

  802. and burnt up

  803. the two captains

  804. of the former fifty

  805. and their fifties.

  806. Therefore,

  807. let my life

  808. now be precious

  809. in thy sight.

  810. You know what?

  811. You've got to have

  812. a lot of respect

  813. for this guy.

  814. Here's a guy

  815. doing his duty.

  816. He was doing

  817. what his duty

  818. told him he had to do.

  819. But he said,

  820. I'm not going to be

  821. disrespectful to God

  822. doing my duty.

  823. You know?

  824. You could probably

  825. preach a whole message

  826. about this guy

  827. right here.

  828. Because he understood

  829. the difference.

  830. He understood

  831. how those things

  832. interconnected.

  833. And you know what?

  834. I want you to see here.

  835. Elijah and God

  836. both respected

  837. this man

  838. for being

  839. an honorable

  840. individual.

  841. and requesting,

  842. not coming arrogantly,

  843. but respecting

  844. where he was

  845. and what was happening.

  846. This guy had

  847. some wisdom.

  848. He arrives

  849. with some humility.

  850. If he doesn't come

  851. looking at Elijah

  852. and say,

  853. get down here now

  854. or else,

  855. he arrives

  856. and it says

  857. he falls on his knees

  858. like he would

  859. before a king.

  860. He says,

  861. Elijah,

  862. let my life

  863. be precious

  864. in thy sight.

  865. he came humbly

  866. before him.

  867. He had a duty

  868. and responsibility

  869. but yet he was

  870. humble enough

  871. to realize

  872. who he was

  873. speaking with

  874. and who Elijah

  875. represented.

  876. We see here

  877. and he tells them

  878. all the things

  879. that happened.

  880. Look at verse 16.

  881. They say,

  882. and behold now,

  883. there be with thy servant

  884. fifty strong...

  885. Okay, that's verse 2.

  886. Get back over

  887. to the right one.

  888. Get used to this one.

  889. Verse 15.

  890. And the angel of the Lord

  891. said unto Elijah,

  892. go down with him

  893. and be not afraid.

  894. And he arose

  895. and went down with him

  896. unto the king.

  897. And he said unto him,

  898. thus saith the Lord.

  899. So here Elijah,

  900. God tells him

  901. after this man

  902. humbly comes

  903. before him

  904. and Elijah

  905. has some mercy

  906. upon him

  907. because God says,

  908. hey, no,

  909. we don't need fire

  910. in this case.

  911. He came humbly.

  912. You know what?

  913. It's amazing

  914. in the scripture

  915. you'll find

  916. that you humble yourself

  917. before the sight of God.

  918. God's a God of mercy.

  919. What a great picture.

  920. This guy came

  921. with the same job

  922. to do the same responsibility,

  923. but because he came humbly

  924. in the right spirit

  925. and the right attitude,

  926. God had mercy on him.

  927. There was nothing special

  928. between him

  929. and the other two

  930. except for the fact

  931. of the attitude

  932. that he represented.

  933. He was the same captain

  934. over the same type

  935. of people,

  936. group of 50,

  937. had the same authority

  938. but realized humility

  939. was beneficial.

  940. So we see here Elijah,

  941. it says in verse 15,

  942. the angel of the Lord

  943. said to Elijah,

  944. go down with him,

  945. be not afraid of him.

  946. And he arose

  947. and went down with him

  948. unto the king.

  949. You know what?

  950. God said,

  951. if this man's willing

  952. to be humble,

  953. you can trust him.

  954. God says,

  955. this man is one

  956. that you can,

  957. we know what,

  958. he's not going to

  959. just turn Elijah in

  960. or he's not going

  961. to harm him

  962. because of the spirit

  963. and the attitude

  964. that he had

  965. and God tells Elijah

  966. to go on down with him.

  967. So Elijah comes down

  968. and he goes with him

  969. and he comes before Hosea.

  970. Verse 16,

  971. and he said unto him,

  972. thus saith the Lord

  973. for as much as thou

  974. hast sent messengers

  975. to inquire Beelzebub,

  976. the God of Ekron,

  977. is it not because

  978. there is no God

  979. in Israel

  980. to inquire of his word?

  981. Therefore thou shalt

  982. not come down

  983. off that bed

  984. on which thou art

  985. gone up,

  986. but shalt surely die.

  987. You know,

  988. it's interesting

  989. that Isaiah wanted

  990. Elijah to come down

  991. so he could kill him.

  992. And Elijah says,

  993. you've gone up

  994. on your bed

  995. and you're never

  996. going to come down.

  997. Elijah arrives

  998. and personally delivers

  999. the same message.

  1000. You know,

  1001. it's kind of interesting

  1002. that God's message

  1003. didn't change

  1004. from the time

  1005. he sent it back

1006. to him with the messengers

  1007. to the time

  1008. that Elijah confronted

  1009. him.

  1010. It's the exact

  1011. same message.

  1012. There's no difference.

  1013. It's exactly the same

  1014. and why did,

  1015. when they're there,

  1016. Elijah arrives

  1017. and he personally

  1018. delivers that message

  1019. and asks him

  1020. very clearly,

  1021. why did you seek

  1022. information about life

  1023. from the Lord

  1024. of the flies

1025. instead of the living God?

  1026. What a very beneficial

  1027. for things

  1028. for us to consider.

  1029. You know,

  1030. this Beelzebub,

  1031. you'll find him

  1032. all the way up

  1033. through the scripture.

  1034. You'll find even Jesus

  1035. was accused

  1036. of serving him.

  1037. He's directly associated

  1038. with Satan

  1039. and the devil.

1040. As you'll find later on,

  1041. he's associated

1042. with some very wicked things.

  1043. Children being sacrificed.

  1044. There's a lot

  1045. of different elements

  1046. as we look through

  1047. the scripture

  1048. that he's tied to

  1049. and we find here,

  1050. he says,

  1051. your rejection,

  1052. why did Isaiah die?

  1053. Because he rejected God.

  1054. He rejected God's mercy.

  1055. He rejected all

  1056. that God stood for.

  1057. He rejected all

1058. that God had done for him.

  1059. All that God provided

  1060. all the way up

  1061. to the very end.

  1062. Here's Elijah the prophet

1063. and he had an opportunity

  1064. to make a choice

  1065. and he chose

  1066. to still deny God.

  1067. Thou shalt surely die.

  1068. You know,

  1069. the reality is

1070. is the wages of sin

  1071. is death.

  1072. When people reject God,

  1073. that's the reality.

1074. It always ends in death.

  1075. You know,

  1076. Isaiah's short,

  1077. tenuous king

  1078. ended when he died

  1079. just as Elijah

  1080. had spoken.

  1081. Notice in verse 17,

  1082. it says,

  1083. so he died

  1084. according to the word

  1085. of the Lord

  1086. which Elijah

  1087. had spoken.

1088. And then his younger brother,

  1089. Jehoram,

  1090. takes his place

1091. because he had no children

1092. or at least no son.

1093. And so we're going to

  1094. pick up here

  1095. next time

  1096. as we continue

  1097. looking through this

  1098. because this is still

  1099. as God is working

  1100. through two years,

  1101. less than two years,

  1102. his reign

1103. and he met his demise

  1104. and still did

  1105. great wickedness

1106. in the eyes of the Lord.

  1107. Let's pray.

  1108. Heavenly Father,

  1109. heavenly Father,
