  1. Dads, and you know, I want to understand that honoring is more than a gift, or even an expression of appreciation.

  2. ! It's great to be appreciated, but the respect for the responsibilities of dad is also needed.

  3. You know, it goes both ways in that to understand the roles and the things and needs of fatherhood,

  4. because fatherhood is a role that's both, I think we can all agree for all the dads, it's very challenging sometimes,

  5. but it's also very rewarding.

  6. You know, and the one thing, it doesn't take long to learn in life that things that have great challenge often come with great reward.

  7. You know, the accomplishment that we have there, and when we see those things taking place as our children grow and they mature in life,

  8. and you see them become even parents, you know, now as a grandparent, I look at some of those things differently, you know.

  9. You look and see that what you have invested in as a father, because fatherhood is not an investment in the present,

  10. it's an investment in the future.

  11. It's an investment in those things to come, both in this life and the next.

  12. The things we invest in as a father are important.

  13. But, you know, the role of fathers in society has definitely changed over time.

  14. You know, the expectation society does, they prioritize things sometimes, trying to get us to get things out of balance,

  15. and not balancing life correctly, and sometimes with work and family, or between protecting and providing,

  16. or even sometimes, you know, honestly, sometimes dads feel inadequate to accomplish the responsibilities.

  17. You know, sometimes you don't want to consider that, but oftentimes dads don't feel like,

  18. hey, I know what I need, I don't know how to handle this right now.

  19. I don't know what, how am I going to accomplish those things at this moment.

  20. And we can feel inadequate, or charting a path through those expectations that you have between work and family and church,

  21. and all these things that we're responsible for.

  22. You know, it's quite a job to navigate all those things and those relationships that we have.

  23. And oftentimes, I think these can lead to a dad being frustrated, or we find even lead to anger or impatience very easily.

  24. You know, you can become frustrated.

  25. But fatherhood, I want you to understand, is not without some help and guidance to accomplish it.

  26. You know, God never gives us a task that he doesn't give us instruction on how to walk through it.

  27. You know, that's the great thing about God.

  28. God doesn't just give us a lofty goal.

  29. He says, this is the objective, and now here's the tools to implement to make that happen.

  30. To put those things, but to use those tools is sometimes difficult.

  31. Because like anything, if you're building anything, balance of what tools to use at the right time is important.

  32. Because, you know, you can't use a saw to drive a nail.

  33. I mean, that's the reality of sometimes we feel frustrated,

  34. and sometimes we try to use the wrong tool to accomplish the task.

  35. And today we're going to look at fatherhood here a little bit,

  36. because God does give us information on leading your family,

  37. and you're raising your children.

  38. It requires wisdom and perseverance.

  39. And we're going to see here this morning, if you found Ephesians chapter 6,

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  40. we'll read the first four verses if you want to stand together and honor a reading of the Word of God this morning.

  41. As we find here, because this passage really lays out a balance here

  42. when it comes to fatherhood and our families.

  43. Because notice in verse 1 here, it says,

  44. Heavenly Father, as we come before you today, Lord, we just thank you for our dads,

  45. and Lord, for each dad here today.

  46. Lord, those that one day hope to be dads.

  47. Lord, it's just a role that doesn't begin at the moment that you become a dad,

  48. but Lord, it lays the groundwork even before in our life.

  49. The things we learn from our own fathers,

  50. and things that we learn from your Word, Lord, as we gather through.

  51. Lord, as we honor dads today, Lord,

  52. we just pray for each one for the challenges that life brings,

  53. and trying to balance these things.

  54. Even as we look at some things today, Lord,

  55. but Lord, we also just ask you to encourage dads today.

  56. Lord, we need to be encouraged, Lord,

  57. that you didn't give us a task that's impossible,

  58. but you gave us a task that may be challenging and difficult.

  59. But Lord, it's a task that can be accomplished through the guidance of your Word.

  60. And Lord, as we seek you and rely upon you for direction in those things.

  61. And Lord, we just give you all the praise in Jesus' name.

  62. Amen.

  63. May be seated.

  64. You know, as we look here this morning,

  65. because Ephesians does give us some guidance for children and parents,

  66. you know, the term used here for father,

  67. it has an implication of moms attached to it.

  68. And I think that's a natural inclination in Scripture,

  69. that dad and mom stand together.

  70. But as we read earlier last week in Ephesians 5,

  71. dads have a unique responsibility of headship and leadership within the family.

  72. And so when it talks about fathers,

  73. fathers, you need to oversight these things.

  74. But this is also, this morning, some of the things we talk about

  75. are something for moms to pay attention to also and to deal with.

  76. Because as a parent, we can all get caught up in these things.

  77. We can provoke our children

  78. and make it difficult for them to do their part in honoring their parents.

  79. To do those things.

  80. But these instructions to fathers

  81. divulge their unique role in shaping their children's spiritual and mental maturity.

  82. You know, I want you to understand,

  83. our role today as dads is not just to raise up kids and get them out of the house.

  84. Now, that might be an objective, but that's not the goal.

  85. You know, as a dad, I think every dad says,

  86. I want to see my kids grow up and mature and be able to step out on their own.

  87. That's a sign of maturity to be able to do that.

  88. But the goal is not just to leave, just not for them to leave the house.

  89. The goal is to equip them and train them for what they need when they are out on their own.

  90. To be able to navigate the challenges of life.

  91. And today we're going to take a few moments here this morning

  92. to even look at these things of encouragements to dad

  93. in their biblical responsibilities.

  94. Not only to know, but to fulfill what I really think is a very high calling in their lives.

  95. Because being a dad is important.

  96. You know, it doesn't take much looking at statistics

  97. to see the importance of dad's role in the life of children.

  98. The impact is great.

  99. It's lifelong impacts in the life of a child

  100. with the picture they have of their father.

  101. And we're going to see and look at this a little bit this morning.

  102. But look here in verse 4 in our text here.

  103. It says,

  104. And ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath.

  105. Provoke them not to wrath.

  106. You know, the challenge of being a parent,

  107. the constant expectations, the responsibilities.

  108. I mean, as a dad, you're supposed to care and provide for your children.

  109. You know, and sometimes the way kids act and all the things going on in life,

  110. you can get frustrated.

  111. I mean, life can be frustrating because you're trying to do what you know to do,

  112. but it's not working out the way you thought it would.

  113. You know, it can be frustrating.

  114. And kids, kids can be frustrating.

  115. You know, and it's not just when they're young.

  116. You know, I often tell parents, you know,

  117. they get, when they have little ones running around,

  118. it can be a lot of energy and a lot of consumption of physical energy.

  119. But, you know, as kids get older and you start training them up,

  120. sometimes you can get frustrated with just the reactions

  121. and their responses as they grow.

  122. You know, these are things that are naturally occurring.

  123. It's just, it's not just a one-time thing.

  124. Okay, I do this one thing, and they're going to turn out right.

  125. I want you to understand what we're talking about here is a long-term investment.

  126. It takes time.

  127. It takes energy.

  128. It takes consistency.

  129. It takes energy in our lives because sometimes I want you to understand,

  130. even if you're doing what's right,

  131. your kids are not going to be happy with it.

  132. Matter of fact, I'll put it this way.

  133. If your kids are always happy with your decisions as a parent,

  134. you're probably doing something wrong as a parent.

  135. If they're always happy with everything,

  136. there's probably something wrong because you're probably indulging them.

  137. And it's not our job to indulge our children.

  138. It's our job to train them and correct them and instruct them.

  139. To prepare them.

  140. To equip them.

  141. You know, sometimes you're not always happy with those that are trying to accomplish those goals

  142. because it pushes into your life in a way that challenges your children.

  143. You ought to be, your children ought to feel challenged from some things in life.

  144. But I want you to understand here that what he's talking about here,

  145. not provoking your children to wrath, we're not talking about a one-time event.

  146. Because like I said, parents are, your kids are sometimes not going to be happy with you.

  147. Because wrath is not just upset with a one-time thing.

  148. Wrath that it's speaking about here is anger mingled with contempt.

  149. That's a whole different thing.

  150. That's a long-term effect with many inputs impacting it.

  151. It has to do with a philosophy and a practice that a parent uses.

  152. And to grab a hold of that because, you know,

  153. the dynamics of this, sometimes this happens when we're being too harsh or even inconsistent.

  154. You know, it's easy for parents sometimes to be constantly nitpicking every fault

  155. to the point the child becomes frustrated and resentful.

  156. Because it's like, what can I do right?

  157. You know, that's what it's talking about here.

  158. We have to be careful what we're speaking of to understand how we need to address these things.

  159. Because as we understand that they can become resentful and wrathful, the Bible tells us,

  160. God tells us that that's not the way for your children to mature.

  161. You know, we find a lot of children that harbor a lot of things from their childhood.

  162. Now, I want you to understand one thing, especially for parents.

  163. I'll give you a clue.

  164. You're not going to do everything right.

  165. Okay?

  166. But, you know, God even makes provision for that.

  167. It's called confession and forgiveness.

  168. God gives us tools to deal with those things if they're used in the right way.

  169. But you know what part of the problem is?

  170. We leave those tools on the wayside because pride and other things get in the way.

  171. To be able to grab a hold of what we need to do in our life.

  172. And oftentimes we'll see things come to this point or even be driven to this point from one thing

  173. because we try to fix everything at one time instead of keeping perspective in the moment.

  174. You know?

  175. If there's an issue of disobedience or defiance or disregard,

  176. one of the things I'd encourage you is to take a moment to consider

  177. what's the one key thing I need to address?

  178. Because sometimes you can't fix it all at one time.

  179. But if you address the big issue,

  180. you'll find oftentimes the smaller issues take care of themselves.

  181. But that takes some intention on the part of the parent, doesn't it?

  182. It takes some intention on our part as the mature one.

  183. You know, let me say this.

  184. Parents, don't be surprised when your kids act immature.

  185. That's the reason you're supposed to equip them to mature.

  186. That's the reason the Bible says when you're a child,

  187. you do childish things.

  188. But when you grow up, you ought to put those things away.

  189. How do they put them away?

  190. They mature.

  191. They understand what's taking place.

  192. And we find here, you know,

  193. I'd encourage you if you're dealing with those things,

  194. look for what is the key lesson that needs dealt with.

  195. What's the most important thing at that moment

  196. and deal with the one thing.

  197. And that way it's not overwhelming to you

  198. and it's not overwhelming to your children.

  199. Try to deal with those things in perspective

  200. because secondly,

  201. first is perspective,

  202. second is timing.

  203. You know, I think sometimes as parents,

  204. we get in trouble because we don't understand

  205. when is the right time to deal with something.

  206. The right time is important.

  207. If you ask,

  208. this is the,

  209. you need to ask yourself,

  210. is this the time we need to address this issue

  211. or do I need to pause?

  212. Do I need to step back for a moment?

  213. That might be five minutes.

  214. It might be a day.

  215. Depending on the situation and the circumstance

  216. because you say,

  217. preacher, why should I just dive in?

  218. Because some things,

  219. yes, you need to dive in and deal with immediately.

  220. There's some things,

  221. if there's immediate danger,

  222. you better get after it right now.

  223. It's the same reason

  224. if there's a hot pot on the stove,

  225. you don't let your kids say,

  226. oh, let them grab ahold of it.

  227. They'll figure it out.

  228. We'll talk about it tomorrow.

  229. That's foolishness because why?

  230. There's an immediate danger

  231. that needs dealt with.

  232. An immediate dynamic that needs to be addressed

  233. and sometimes those things are,

  234. but sometimes it's important to know when to step back

  235. because you say,

  236. preacher, why do you need to step back?

  237. You know, sometimes as parents,

  238. we let our emotions and our feelings get in the way.

  239. One of the fastest ways to cause your children

  240. to provoke them to wrath

  241. is to discipline by emotion.

  242. You expect them to control their emotions

  243. when you can't control yours.

  244. Do you realize that's a training moment?

  245. You're displaying those things

  246. and understanding, you know,

  247. because sometimes through emotions

  248. or like sometimes parents will discipline

  249. or get upset or angry at their children

  250. because they feel embarrassed

  251. or frustrated.

  252. And they take things out of a proper perspective.

  253. You know, I want you to understand

  254. if you're not gonna provoke your children to wrath,

  255. you have to have understanding

  256. of not only yourself, but what God teaches.

  257. Because sometimes it's important to give things time

  258. and to deal with them.

  259. That's where understanding the circumstance

  260. or the situation,

  261. because provoking your children

  262. can also come through things like partiality

  263. or favoritism.

  264. Favoritism within a family,

  265. I'll say is probably one of the biggest reasons

  266. children get angry.

  267. Favoritism causes great disruption

  268. within a household.

  269. You know, look over to Genesis 37 for a moment.

  270. Because here's a,

  271. the book of Genesis is filled with family dynamics.

  272. You know, that's one thing about the book of Genesis.

  273. You have all sorts of reality

  274. of family dynamics happening.

  275. And here in Genesis 37,

  276. we'll find here that it's Jacob here

  277. dealing with his children.

  278. And if you know anything about Jacob,

  279. he had two wives, Rachel and Leah,

  280. and the two wives were at each other.

  281. And then here dad steps in

  282. and shows favoritism and partiality.

  283. And you know what?

  284. The Bible reveals exactly what happened

  285. and how those things came together

  286. in that context.

  287. Because as we look here at Genesis 37,

  288. I want you to see something very important

  289. here this morning.

  290. Look at verse three.

  291. And it says,

  292. Now Israel loved Joseph

  293. more than all his children.

  294. Because he was the son of his old age

  295. and he made him a coat of many colors.

  296. Now we don't have time to get into all the context here,

  297. but I want you to point out

  298. what was,

  299. what did Joseph do,

  300. or what did Jacob do?

  301. He let all the other children know

  302. that, hey,

  303. you're second place

  304. to Joseph.

  305. You hold second seat.

  306. You're less important.

  307. It's one of those things

  308. that Joseph can do no wrong.

  309. But you know,

  310. these other bum children I have,

  311. and I'll just say something there.

  312. If you have bum children,

  313. you know who to blame?

  314. You can go home and look in the mirror.

  315. But notice what happened here

  316. with his family.

  317. Look at verse four.

  318. And when his brethren saw

  319. that their father loved him more

  320. than all his brethren,

  321. they did what?

  322. They hated him

  323. and could not speak peaceably unto him.

  324. I think that's a good example

  325. of a parent provoking their children to wrath.

  326. Because think about,

  327. what did the brothers do?

  328. They wanted to kill him

  329. and they sold him into slavery.

  330. Told his dad that he died.

  331. Animal devoured him.

  332. And partiality provoked anger,

  333. didn't it?

  334. This partiality was also,

  335. let me just tell you,

  336. it was spurred by their moms,

  337. Leah and Rachel.

  338. There was envy and strife between them.

  339. And then when Joseph,

  340. there's already tension in the family

  341. and Joseph just puts the final nail in it

  342. by his choice.

  343. The son that he loved above others.

  344. You know, think about what it tells us

  345. also in Colossians 3.

  346. Colossians 3 in verse 21 says,

  347. Fathers, provoke not your children to anger,

  348. lest they be discouraged.

  349. You know, discouragement is the precursor to wrath.

  350. We need to be careful with this, dads.

  351. We need to be deliberate to foster a respectful

  352. and loving relationship with your children.

  353. You know, be careful about actions

  354. that will provoke them to anger

  355. because of a chosen offense.

  356. You know, sometimes we choose the offense.

  357. Joseph was singled out by his father.

  358. His father chose to do it.

  359. We got to be careful

  360. and not be driven by how we feel

  361. and think about what's the impact.

  362. That's teaching our children also

  363. to control their emotion.

  364. Now, I'm not saying to be cold.

  365. That's a whole different discussion

  366. because you can be warm and under control

  367. because, you know,

  368. you can get the other side of the thing.

  369. You can be so loving that you hurt your children.

  370. I'll use that term loving in a worldly concept

  371. because it's like, oh, I love them,

  372. so they need to be able to do this.

  373. You know, they can't do what,

  374. they need to be able to do

  375. what the other kids need to do

  376. because, you know, if Joey's doing that,

  377. Sam should be able to do this.

  378. And you have, parents, you need to be careful

  379. because that's a problem also.

  380. As we're going to look here

  381. in the next section here

  382. of the command that he gives,

  383. you know, we have to consider our actions

  384. as a father.

  385. Are they building up or tearing down?

  386. But here in Ephesians 6,

  387. we find that it's not just a don't do something.

  388. Now, the one thing I find in Scripture

  389. is God will tell you don't do something

  390. and then he also tells you to do something

  391. as a replacement for that.

  392. You know what?

  393. God never wants us to be empty.

  394. He says, hey, replace this,

  395. take this out and put this in.

  396. You think about through the Scripture

  397. in our life as a believer,

  398. he tells us to put off things and put on things.

  399. He tells us that if you get rid of this,

  400. you need to put this in.

  401. Because you know what the problem is?

  402. There's not room for both.

  403. Something has to go to put something else in.

  404. In life, you don't get storage containers

  405. to put things in.

  406. Buy more, put it in storage.

  407. God says it's all you have.

  408. Something has to go to put something else.

  409. And so we're going to see here this morning,

  410. notice here in our passage here

  411. back in Ephesians chapter 6.

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  412. You know, I don't want you to be discouraged anymore.

  413. I want you to be encouraged

  414. in what God has

  415. because notice what he says

  416. at the end of verse 6.

  417. He says,

  418. but bring them up

  419. in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

  420. You know, dads,

  421. we have a responsibility

  422. to nurture our kids,

  423. a responsibility to bring them up

  424. in the Lord.

  425. This is a framework that God gives us.

  426. The framework is provided to us

  427. in the Word of God.

  428. We're to lead spiritually.

  429. We're to prepare our kids for life.

  430. You know, Jesus is even an example of this also.

  431. You know, consider Luke chapter 2.

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  432. Luke chapter 2 and verse 52.

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  433. The Bible says this,

  434. and Jesus increased in wisdom and stature

  435. and in favor with God and man.

  436. What's it say?

  437. He matured as a complete person.

  438. Our objective as a parent

  439. ought to see our kids grow up

  440. to be complete people,

  441. to love the Lord,

  442. to understand who God is,

  443. what God has done for them.

  444. You know, in our example,

  445. especially dads,

  446. the priorities we place

  447. will directly impact

  448. the outcome of your children.

  449. I want to let you know

  450. whether you're at the grandpa stage

  451. or the first time dad stage

  452. or hoping to one day to be dad,

  453. I'll give you a clue.

  454. Those hoping to be dad

  455. have a great advantage right now

  456. because you know what?

  457. You can look and understand

  458. and you can prepare yourself

  459. to be what you ought to be.

  460. The problem with being grandpa,

  461. sometimes you look back

  462. and say,

  463. I wish I would have.

  464. And there's things you can't undo.

  465. But I want you to understand,

  466. I didn't tell you that to discourage you,

  467. I'm telling you that

  468. to give you understanding.

  469. That's the reason

  470. those other elements need to come in.

  471. Because sometimes as a parent,

  472. you need to ask for forgiveness.

  473. That's part of training your kids too.

  474. You know what's an important thing?

  475. To have your kids understand that,

  476. hey, how do you deal

  477. when something's been wronged

  478. or somebody's been wronged?

  479. To model that is important.

  480. That mental and physical relationship

  481. both with God and with others

  482. is important.

  483. So what does it mean to nurture?

  484. Nurtures provide that which feeds

  485. or cultivates growth.

  486. It involves what they consume.

  487. You know,

  488. we need to be careful

  489. about what our kids consume.

  490. Physically,

  491. you know,

  492. if we let your kids

  493. eat too many sweets,

  494. what happens?

  495. It has a health impact.

  496. But you know,

  497. oftentimes where kids learn

  498. to do that is from parents.

  499. Now,

  500. I'm preaching to myself,

  501. I love sweets, man.

  502. Ice cream is the greatest thing

  503. ever invented.

  504. If I had a choice

  505. between ice cream and coffee,

  506. I think ice cream might win.

  507. But if it was coffee-flavored ice cream,

  508. then it's just a double win.

  509. But you know what?

  510. You have to learn

  511. that those things need,

  512. there's certain things in life

  513. need moderation.

  514. And teaching your kids

  515. that is important.

  516. And as parents,

  517. we're accountable

  518. for what your kids ingest,

  519. both from food,

  520. but also from entertainment,

  521. and also especially

  522. their belief system.

  523. Because part of our responsibility

  524. of parents

  525. is to equip our children

  526. in understanding

  527. who God is.

  528. Because how are they

  529. going to do their part?

  530. Look back at verse 1

  531. there in chapter 6.

  532. It says,

  533. Children,

  534. what?

  535. Obey your parents

  536. in the Lord

  537. for this is right.

  538. Let me ask you a question.

  539. How are the kids

  540. supposed to know that?

  541. And it's different

  542. from memorizing the verse.

  543. How are they supposed

  544. to know what it means?

  545. Then I'll ask you

  546. the other part.

  547. How do they know

  548. how to do it?

  549. Because we all know

  550. you can know something

  551. and not do something.

  552. We need to be careful

  553. of what we're teaching

  554. our children.

  555. This involves

  556. both their physical well-being

  557. and spiritual well-being.

  558. How do they learn

  559. by training?

  560. And training involves

  561. correction and guidance

  562. and the responsibility

  563. here is for fathers

  564. along with the moms.

  565. I want you to understand

  566. this passage

  567. isn't an exclusive

  568. dad thing

  569. because if dad

  570. is the head of the home

  571. and mom is subject

  572. unto dad

  573. in a biblical sense,

  574. we're going to talk

  575. about that coming up

  576. because the Bible

  577. talks about that relationship

  578. and that's very important.

  579. You know,

  580. one of the problems

  581. that you find in families

  582. when mom says one thing

  583. and dad says another.

  584. You want to divide

  585. and show partiality

  586. in your family?

  587. There you go,

  588. right there.

  589. As parents,

  590. you better be on

  591. the same team

  592. for your sake

  593. and your children's sake

  594. because if you're not

  595. on the same team,

  596. you know,

  597. it's amazing

  598. how many people

  599. separate after their

  600. kids leave home.

  601. You know why?

  602. They became on

  603. two different teams

  604. instead of being

  605. on the same team.

  606. I'll give you a little clue

  607. for married people.

  608. I want you to understand

  609. your kids are going

  610. to leave home

  611. and you're going

  612. to have to live

  613. with your spouse

  614. by yourself again.

  615. That ought to be

  616. something you look

  617. forward to

  618. and not something

  619. that you don't.

  620. But oftentimes,

  621. people look at one another

  622. and they look,

  623. who are you?

  624. Because they weren't

  625. on the same team.

  626. To understand

  627. the importance

  628. of this

  629. and make sure dads

  630. of what mom

  631. is doing

  632. and sometimes

  633. you need to get together

  634. and get those things

  635. ironed out.

  636. But I want you

  637. to understand

  638. it's not a responsibility

  639. just for mom

  640. or for taking kids

  641. just to Sunday school

  642. to say,

  643. hey, that's going

  644. to take care

  645. of everything.

  646. No, dads,

  647. it's your role.

  648. It's your responsibility.

  649. You know,

  650. think about,

  651. look at Abraham

  652. who guided his family

  653. in worship

  654. and obedience

  655. to God.

  656. I want you to understand

  657. when you look

  658. at Abraham's life,

  659. he wasn't perfect

  660. in any way.

  661. But as Abraham matured,

  662. we see some things

  663. that God says about him

  664. that tells us

  665. that Abraham

  666. matured himself up

  667. and passed some

  668. mature things

  669. on to his children.

  670. Look over in

  671. Genesis chapter 18.

    Genesis 18 chapter mention

  672. Genesis chapter 18

    Genesis 18 chapter mention

  673. and verse 19

  674. tells us this,

  675. and God says,

  676. for I know him

  677. that he will command

  678. his children

  679. and his household

  680. after him

  681. and they will keep

  682. the way of the Lord

  683. to do justice

  684. and judgment

  685. that the Lord

  686. may bring upon Abraham

  687. that which he has

  688. spoken of him.

  689. You know,

  690. we need to incorporate

  691. the things of the Lord

  692. and the things of life

  693. into our children.

  694. You know,

  695. consider what the Bible

  696. tells us in

  697. Deuteronomy chapter 6.

    Deuteronomy 6 chapter mention

  698. Deuteronomy chapter 6

    Deuteronomy 6 chapter mention

  699. and says this,

  700. and these words

  701. which I command thee

  702. this day

  703. shall be in thine heart.

  704. Now,

  705. that's an important direction

  706. because you can't

  707. give something

  708. you don't possess.

  709. We don't get to operate

  710. like the government.

  711. We don't get to just

  712. get an endless check.

  713. You can only give

  714. to others

  715. what you possess.

  716. What is there?

  717. And thou shalt teach them

  718. diligently unto who?

  719. Thy children.

  720. Now,

  721. notice how you

  722. diligently teach.

  723. Notice what it says.

  724. And shalt talk of them

  725. when thou sittest

  726. in thine house

  727. and when thou walkest

  728. by the way

  729. when they liest down

  730. and when they risest up.

  731. When does that happen?

  732. When your kids

  733. see you living life,

  734. how do you respond

  735. to others?

  736. How do you walk

  737. through difficult situations?

  738. How do you make

  739. right choices?

  740. What choices

  741. don't you make?

  742. What choices

  743. do you make?

  744. How do you prioritize?

  745. If two things are,

  746. if there's nothing wrong

  747. with two things,

  748. what makes one

  749. more important

  750. than the other?

  751. You teach your children.

  752. You know,

  753. one of the problems

  754. I think we often have

  755. as dads

  756. and parents in general

  757. is sometimes

  758. our own pride

  759. gets in the way

  760. of us training

  761. our children

  762. because we're too proud

  763. to say,

  764. no, I need to make

  765. this decision

  766. and not that one.

  767. Verse 8 tells us here,

  768. thou shalt bind them

  769. for a sign upon thine hand

  770. and they shall be

  771. as frontlets

  772. between thine eyes.

  773. You know,

  774. something that ought

  775. to be seen,

  776. something that's shown.

  777. You know,

  778. there's an old saying

  779. that says more things

  780. are caught than taught.

  781. Your kids pick up

  782. mannerisms

  783. and all sorts

  784. of different things

  785. from you.

  786. You know,

  787. they pick up a picture

  788. of who God is

  789. from their parents.

  790. You know,

  791. the reality is

  792. sometimes they come

  793. with a smile

  794. on their face

  795. on Sunday morning

  796. and roast the preacher

  797. on the way home.

  798. You know what

  799. that tells your kids?

  800. It's presenting

  801. a picture of them

  802. of what are the things

  803. of God,

  804. what's the priority,

  805. how to honor somebody,

  806. how to do those things.

  807. I'm not saying

  808. you never have a problem

  809. with the preacher

  810. but you need to,

  811. it's never them timing

  812. and perspective things again.

  813. It needs to be dealt

  814. with the right way

  815. instead of tearing down things.

  816. But look also here

  817. back in our text

  818. in verse 4.

  819. It says not only nurture

  820. but admonition.

  821. Admonishing.

  822. Because nurturing

  823. or training

  824. involves more than

  825. correction

  826. and instruction

  827. but also love

  828. and patience

  829. and understanding.

  830. You know,

  831. a father's role

  832. cannot be overstated.

  833. You know,

  834. we need to teach them

  835. by the choices

  836. and the things

  837. and the priorities.

  838. How do we respond?

  839. How do we show them

  840. what maturity looks like?

  841. A father's display

  842. of love

  843. and patience

  844. towards his children

  845. has a direct impact

  846. in their confidence,

  847. in their stability.

  848. It has a direct impact

  849. upon their life.

  850. That practical daily skill

  851. of understanding

  852. how to walk through life

  853. and it gives confidence

  854. and stability

  855. to the kids

  856. when it's founded

  857. on the word of God.

  858. It provides them

  859. with a picture also

  860. of a heavenly father

  861. that cares for them.

  862. You know,

  863. it's amazing

  864. how many people

  865. get a tainted view

  866. of God

  867. because they have

  868. a tainted view

  869. of fatherhood.

  870. They think God

  871. is just like their father.

  872. Well,

  873. I've got some good news

  874. for you.

  875. God's a lot better

  876. than your dad.

  877. God's a lot better

  878. than the best dad

  879. because even the best dad

  880. is going to make

  881. some mistakes,

  882. do some things

  883. they ought not to do,

  884. but God never has

  885. and never will.

  886. He's the perfect father.

  887. You think about

  888. the picture

  889. of the prodigal son

  890. there in Luke 15.

  891. It talks about

  892. the father saw him

  893. had compassion

  894. and ran

  895. and fell on his neck

  896. and kissed his son

  897. and we realize here

  898. that the picture

  899. is that of a heavenly father

  900. who cares about you

  901. that seeks reconciliation.

  902. You know,

  903. how one pictures their dad

  904. influences their picture

  905. of God.

  906. You know,

  907. if they see God

  908. and their dad

  909. as one that provokes

  910. them to anger,

  911. they'll see God's

  912. instruction comparably.

  913. They'll look at

  914. the things of God

  915. and say,

  916. if my dad's like that

  917. and God commands

  918. all these things

  919. then God must be

  920. mean and cruel

  921. and all the things

  922. that people get a picture

  923. that are counter

  924. to who God really is.

  925. You know,

  926. the role that you have

  927. as dad is essential.

  928. You know,

  929. I want to encourage you

  930. because you know what?

  931. The best thing is

  932. is every day

  933. is a new day

  934. with the Lord.

  935. I'm not saying

  936. that one change

  937. in your life

  938. as a dad's going to

  939. change everything

  940. in your family,

  941. but I guarantee

  942. it's one step

  943. getting in the right direction.

  944. Because often

  945. when we have problems,

  946. I want you to understand

  947. you didn't get there

  948. overnight and you're not

  949. going to solve a problem

  950. overnight.

  951. You know,

  952. it's amazing how many

  953. people think,

  954. well,

  955. this is 15 years

  956. in the making,

  957. I want it solved tomorrow.

  958. No,

  959. sometimes it might take

  960. 30 years to iron out

  961. 15 years of problem,

  962. but you need to make

  963. the investment

  964. to say this is the direction,

  965. this is what we're going

  966. to do from here on.

  967. I know where we were,

  968. but I know where I want

  969. to go

  970. and make a difference,

  971. a distinction

  972. in our life.

  973. You know,

  974. I want you to consider

  975. where you need improvement

  976. even this week

  977. as a dad.

  978. You know,

  979. where can you improve?

  980. What things does God tell you

  981. you need to change

  982. a little bit

  983. or deal with?

  984. Don't be discouraged

  985. in your role as dad.

  986. I want to encourage you

  987. to step up

  988. and to follow

  989. God's principles

  990. that you might

  991. bring them up

  992. in the nourishment

  993. and admonishment

  994. of the Lord.

  995. To bring them up

  996. in the right things

  997. because the greatest

  998. legacy a father

  999. can have

1000. is a faith in Christ

  1001. and a love

  1002. for his family.

  1003. To understand

  1004. those things,

  1005. it starts with your

  1006. own relationship

  1007. with the Lord.

  1008. You know,

  1009. this morning,

1010. I want to encourage you

  1011. to consider

  1012. where are you

  1013. with God?

  1014. It starts

  1015. with you

  1016. and God first.

  1017. You know,

  1018. have you trusted him

  1019. as your savior

  1020. because you cannot

  1021. lead your family

  1022. in faith

  1023. if you don't

  1024. first possess it.

  1025. If you're not willing

  1026. to obey it.

  1027. If you're not willing

  1028. to do it.

  1029. It's important

  1030. because God

  1031. set the stage

  1032. of what,

  1033. how he cares

  1034. for those

  1035. that are his.

  1036. When you consider

  1037. that he gave

  1038. his only begotten son

  1039. to save you.

  1040. He didn't do it

  1041. to provoke you

  1042. to anger

  1043. or to condemn you.

  1044. He did it

  1045. that you might

  1046. believe upon him.

  1047. You know,

  1048. consider a very famous

  1049. verse,

  1050. John 3, 16

  1051. and verse 7

  1052. he says,

  1053. for God so loved

  1054. the world

  1055. that he did what?

  1056. He gave his only

  1057. begotten son

  1058. that whosoever

  1059. believeth in him

  1060. should not perish

  1061. but have everlasting life.

  1062. For God sent

  1063. not his son

  1064. into the world

  1065. to do what?

  1066. Condemn the world

  1067. but that the world

  1068. through him

  1069. might be saved.

  1070. What God did

  1071. was to provoke us

  1072. unto love

  1073. and to good works.

  1074. To provoke us

  1075. unto him

  1076. that we might

  1077. know him

  1078. and understand

  1079. that he gives us

  1080. the guidance

  1081. we need

  1082. to be the dad

1083. that we ought to be.

1084. I want to encourage you

  1085. this week

  1086. to consider

  1087. those things.

  1088. Consider yourself

  1089. as a dad

  1090. whether you have

  1091. children yet or not.

  1092. You know what?

  1093. Your preparation

  1094. for being a father

  1095. starts

  1096. from your own father

  1097. raising you up

  1098. and preparing you

  1099. and the choices

  1100. you make

  1101. are important.

  1102. I wanted you

  1103. to consider this morning

  1104. what things

  1105. does Lord

  1106. speak to you

  1107. about today

  1108. in the decisions

  1109. and the things

1110. and maybe you're here today

  1111. and not sure

  1112. about where you stand

  1113. with God

  1114. I encourage you

1115. today would be the day

  1116. that you would get

1117. started on the right footing

  1118. the best footing

  1119. the only footing

  1120. that gets you

  1121. to be the dad

  1122. that you ought

  1123. to be

  1124. and that's to know

  1125. Christ as your savior.

  1126. As heads are bowed

  1127. and eyes are closed

  1128. this morning

  1129. what about you today?

  1130. You know I know

  1131. we had a message

  1132. towards dad

  1133. but really it applies

  1134. to all of us

  1135. in our relationship

  1136. to God.

  1137. Maybe the Lord

  1138. spoke to you

  1139. about some things

  1140. or situations

  1141. or dynamics

  1142. in your life

  1143. and maybe you say

  1144. Lord

  1145. I need to do

  1146. some things different.

  1147. Maybe you need

  1148. to take some time

  1149. to seek God

1150. and to look at God's word

  1151. get some counsel

  1152. okay how do I

  1153. walk through

  1154. these things?

  1155. How can I start

  1156. and change the direction?

1157. Or how can I do

  1158. better continuing

  1159. in the direction

  1160. towards serving

  1161. the Lord?

  1162. Heavenly fathers

  1163. we come before you

  1164. this morning

  1165. Lord we just

  1166. thank you

  1167. and praise you.

  1168. Lord we're thankful

  1169. that even though

  1170. you tell us

1171. things to be careful of

  1172. Lord you also

  1173. encourage us

  1174. to tell us

  1175. hey

  1176. you're giving us

  1177. those things

  1178. that we need

  1179. to do

  1180. and to accomplish

  1181. what you would

  1182. have for us

  1183. to do

  1184. as dads

  1185. here today.

  1186. And Lord

  1187. we just love you

  1188. and thank you

  1189. Lord praise

  1190. we have an opportunity

  1191. to respond

  1192. to your word

  1193. today

  1194. that your spirit

  1195. might stir

  1196. each heart

  1197. each life

  1198. to look at

  1199. ourselves

  1200. to say

  1201. where am I

  1202. with you

  1203. and Lord

  1204. where do I need

  1205. to be different

  1206. according to your word

  1207. and Lord

  1208. we ask these things

  1209. in Jesus name

  1210. as the piano plays

  1211. what about you?
