  1. We're going to be finishing up the lesson from a couple of weeks ago.

  2. They're talking about Moses and his family there.

  3. !

  4. We're going to be here this morning at that.

  5. Exodus chapter 2 this morning.

    Exodus 2 chapter mention

  6. Exodus chapter 2.

    Exodus 2 chapter mention

  7. Because as we're going to see here, we're going to look at the life of Moses and his family.

  8. And continue looking here.

  9. But let's read our text here today.

  10. Exodus chapter 2.

    Exodus 2 chapter mention

  11. Let's pick up in verse 1.

  12. And it says this,

  13. And there went a man of the house of Levi, who took to wife a daughter of Levi.

  14. And the woman conceived and bare a son.

  15. And she saw him, that he was a goodly child.

  16. And she hid him three months.

  17. And when she could no longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes.

  18. And daubed it with slime and with pitch.

  19. And put the child therein.

  20. And she laid it on the flags by the river's brink.

  21. And his sister stood afar off to wit that would be done to him.

  22. And the daughter of Pharaoh came down to wash herself at the river.

  23. And her maidens walked along the riverside.

  24. And when she saw the ark among the flags, she sent her maid to fetch it.

  25. And when she had opened it, she saw the child.

  26. And behold, the babe wept.

  27. And she had compassion on him and said, This is one of the Hebrew's children.

  28. Then said his sister to Pharaoh's daughter,

  29. Shall I go and call to thee a nurse of the Hebrew women,

  30. that she may nurse the child for thee?

  31. And Pharaoh's daughter said unto her, Go.

  32. And the maid went and called the child's mother.

  33. And Pharaoh's daughter said unto her, Take this child away and nurse it for me.

  34. And I will give thee thy wage.

  35. And the woman took the child and nursed it.

  36. Let's pray.

  37. Heavenly Fathers, we just take a few moments here this morning as we look into your word here today.

  38. Lord, help us to understand the reality that even in the midst of what we see as unfair

  39. or not the way we would want things to be, Lord,

  40. or even outright cruelty towards us as an individual.

  41. Lord, help us to be mindful that you are the one that is there.

  42. You're the one that's above those things.

  43. You're the one that provided the means to walk through those things in this life.

  44. And Lord, we just ask your hand upon each one today, Lord,

  45. that we might realize that our strength, even in these moments,

  46. is to trust you as we walk through.

  47. And Lord, we just give you all the praise in Jesus' name.

  48. Amen.

  49. You know, as we understand, you know, anybody can experience discrimination.

  50. You know, there's a lot about discrimination today,

  51. and people put a lot of emphasis upon it.

  52. But I don't think anybody could doubt that Jochebed and her family faced discrimination to the extreme.

  53. When you consider what Pharaoh wanted to do,

  54. if you remember, they wanted to kill all the male children.

  55. You know, why?

  56. Only because they were Jewish.

  57. They wanted to throw all the male children into the river.

  58. You know, but we understand as we see this picture of how Jochebed overcame that discrimination,

  59. overcame that injustice.

  60. And we understand that picture of what's taking place.

  61. And we understand the nation that was once had saved Egypt through Joseph is now under oppression.

  62. And there's people that are condemning them,

  63. and the Pharaoh wants to keep them oppressed.

  64. But, you know, even in the midst of this oppressive culture,

  65. we find a young couple by the name of Amron and Jochebed.

  66. They still said, I'm not going to let culture determine what I do.

  67. And they went ahead and got married and started a family, even in light of it.

  68. You know?

  69. Today, most people look, man, that'd be tough.

  70. Yes, it was.

  71. But you know what?

  72. Even when times are tough, when we trust God, God blesses.

  73. God blesses in the good times.

  74. God blesses in the rough times.

  75. God blesses even in the devastating times of life.

  76. She understood what was needed there.

  77. But we find here that when they got married,

  78. but not only did Pharaoh enslave the entire nation

  79. and force them to work to an extreme, just tiresome to exhaustion,

  80. and to keep them subject unto him.

  81. And then to bring their own son, I mean, and to kill their own children, you know.

  82. Think about Exodus 114 in our passage here.

  83. Take a look again what it says here.

  84. And he said,

  85. That's 2.14.

  86. Get back to 1.14.

  87. Get back a page.

  88. There we go.

  89. And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage and mortar and in brick

  90. and all manner of service in the field.

  91. All their service wherein they made them serve was with rigor.

  92. I mean, in the spite of oppressive work hours,

  93. in spite of the fact that their male children were going to end up killed,

  94. these young couples said,

  95. We're going to take a stand.

  96. We're going to trust God and continue to do what we ought to do.

  97. And it was a culture of oppression, a culture of hatred,

  98. and deep discrimination in which Moses was born.

  99. You know, people have faced these things throughout history.

  100. You know, discrimination isn't something that's a 21st century American problem.

  101. You know, injustice isn't a 21st century American problem.

  102. I want you to understand from the very beginning of time,

  103. people have faced oppression.

  104. They've faced injustices.

  105. And they understand the reality, and oftentimes it is,

  106. Well, why isn't it fair?

  107. Well, you know, understand you've got to learn very quickly in life one thing.

  108. It's not going to be fair.

  109. But we do have a Savior.

  110. We have a God that rises above the injustice and above those things.

  111. And so sometimes we can identify with those things because, you know,

  112. discrimination happens through all sorts of things.

  113. You know?

  114. Today we have class discrimination.

  115. I mean, where were you born as far as in the social status?

  116. I mean, you say, Well, America doesn't.

  117. Yeah, we still do.

  118. People naturally do that.

  119. You know, a few weeks ago, you know, when Brother Anathakumar was here,

  120. and they're talking about the oppression of India with their caste system.

  121. You know?

  122. You know what?

  123. The same thing happens every place, but sometimes it's just not as pronounced.

  124. You know?

  125. Discrimination is not something you're going to do away with,

  126. but it's something that we can face, and we can trust God,

  127. and know God is going to hold to account to understand that dynamic.

  128. And we ought to do our part not to be prejudiced,

  129. not to prefer one above another, the Bible tells us.

  130. And we're going to see that play out,

  131. and we need to understand the picture that sometimes, as a believer,

  132. you're going to face discrimination.

  133. Think about what it tells us in 2 Timothy 3, in verse 12.

  134. It says,

  135. And all, yea, all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall what?

  136. Suffer persecution.

  137. You know?

  138. I want you to understand, as a believer,

  139. sometimes you take a stand for Christ,

  140. you're going to find people just don't like you sometimes.

  141. You know?

  142. That's a reality that you need to understand from the very beginning.

  143. Sometimes you don't have to do anything but just take a stand as a believer,

  144. and they're going to have people that don't like you.

  145. But don't let that hinder you from doing what you ought to do.

  146. You know?

  147. We need to understand that as a person of faith,

  148. and one that's trusted in Christ,

  149. to understand that we ought not to fall for Satan's tricks.

  150. Because you know what often happens?

  151. Even to believers, sometimes we get bitter.

  152. You can get angry about what happened.

  153. You know, you can allow those things,

  154. or you can get sidetracked in that.

  155. And so we're going to look and finish up here today, hopefully.

  156. But we're going to look here at the first,

  157. review the first section we covered here,

  158. and we learn about those questions.

  159. But think about the ministry of a mom.

  160. You know, the mom's influence in the life of kids is important.

  161. You know, we saw how Jochebed,

  162. how she lovingly protected Moses.

  163. You know?

  164. That baby boy was a gift.

  165. It was worth pausing to note that children are indeed gifts from God.

  166. You know?

  167. We live in a culture that puts children second oftentimes.

  168. Now let me explain.

  169. They put them second because it's like,

  170. well, when I get my, I get enough money,

  171. I get enough of this, I get enough of that,

  172. when I'm in the right position, then we'll have kids.

  173. You know what that's saying?

  174. That's saying that kids are a secondary.

  175. They're like a benefit that you get after you reach a certain level.

  176. But think about what the scripture says in Psalm 127.

  177. It says,

  178. Lo, children are a heritage of the Lord,

  179. and the fruit of the womb is his what?

  180. Reward.

  181. You know?

  182. As a believer, you can miss out on the reward that God has for you.

  183. You know?

  184. Having gone through the sequence,

  185. and now we're in the grandkid stage,

  186. you know what?

  187. Your reward is to see your children grow up

  188. to become adults.

  189. To see them take responsibility,

  190. take their own faith in Christ,

  191. to move forward in the things that you've taught them.

  192. That's a reward.

  193. To understand the effort and the energy

  194. and all that it took emotionally and physically

  195. was well worth the investment.

  196. But we see here that Moses' mom

  197. saw and recognized that blessing of a child,

  198. even in the midst of great discrimination,

  199. of great injustice.

  200. I don't know how much more unjust you could be

  201. than to say,

  202. we're going to take your newly born son

  203. and let him drown in the river.

  204. But I want you to understand that

  205. God gives parents children,

  206. and I want you to understand

  207. because we're going to see here

  208. how God uses this,

  209. not only in their life,

  210. but in the life of the entire nation.

  211. Their faith changed the entire nation.

  212. God had a plan

  213. and a purpose.

  214. You know,

  215. as they hid baby Moses,

  216. it must have been a challenging situation

  217. and to understand

  218. that they hide a baby three months,

  219. you know,

  220. and pretty soon it becomes impossible.

  221. You know,

  222. they start wiggling

  223. and they make a lot of noise.

  224. And sometimes they smell,

  225. you know,

  226. sometimes you know,

  227. yeah,

  228. there's a baby around.

  229. But they hid him as long as they could,

  230. but she formed a plan

  231. and she trusted in the providence of God.

  232. Not only did her mom protect,

  233. but she trusted in the providence of God.

  234. Now I want you to understand here,

  235. providence just means

  236. I'm going to trust God's plan.

  237. That God is going to work those things

  238. to his good,

  239. to what he wants.

  240. You know,

  241. look there at verse three in our text

  242. in Exodus chapter two,

  243. where it says,

  244. and when she could no longer hide him,

  245. she took it for him

  246. an ark of bulrushes

  247. and dabbed it with slime

  248. and with pitch

  249. and put the child there in

  250. and she laid him in the flags

  251. by the river's brink.

  252. And,

  253. and you know,

  254. we see here this picture

  255. and dynamic

  256. is the same picture you see

  257. talking about

  258. Noah building the ark.

  259. It's the same terminology.

  260. That is used.

  261. It was a little ark

  262. to preserve

  263. Moses.

  264. And we see that God

  265. used that

  266. in a mighty way

  267. and how she trusted

  268. her child to God

  269. in the midst

  270. of devastating things.

  271. You know,

  272. as I keep reading

  273. through this story,

  274. you know,

  275. it fascinates me

  276. because today we would say

  277. that's in jest.

  278. I'm going to do something.

  279. I'm going to do this.

  280. I'm going to do that.

  281. But she was willing

  282. to say,

  283. I'm going to trust God first

  284. and to do what she needed

  285. to do even in light

  286. of all those things.

  287. She trusted in God's providence

  288. to understand

  289. this is under God's control

  290. because what she did

  291. is against every grain

  292. of our nature.

  293. You know,

  294. sometimes to honor God

  295. rubs against what we want.

  296. Sometimes it rubs

  297. against what we think.

  298. You know,

  299. to understand that

  300. the way God thinks

  301. is not the way we think.

  302. And we also need

  303. to understand

  304. that the way God thinks

  305. and what God does,

  306. His ways,

  307. are higher than our ways.

  308. We look at situations

  309. and say,

  310. that's not fair.

  311. And God says,

  312. trust me,

  313. I've got it under control.

  314. You know,

  315. we can trust God

  316. and not respond

  317. with hostility

  318. towards it,

  319. but to respond

  320. properly.

  321. To trust God,

  322. even when

  323. a refusal

  324. to react

  325. out of spite

  326. or desire

  327. to get even.

  328. I mean,

  329. we need to trust God

  330. and not say,

  331. I'm going to get back at Him.

  332. You know,

  333. that's a hard place

  334. because we need to understand

  335. the mercy of God.

  336. Because in this account,

  337. you'll see God's mercy

  338. play through.

  339. You'll see God's mercy

  340. throughout Exodus here

  341. and the power

  342. of injustice

  343. is dissolved

  344. in our lives

  345. by the mercy

  346. of God.

  347. You know,

  348. think about the mercy

  349. shown to Jochebed

  350. when she trusted God.

  351. Now,

  352. think about this

  353. for a moment.

  354. She goes down

  355. to the river

  356. after she'd made

  357. an ark of bulrushes

  358. and sealed it in

  359. so it wouldn't sink

  360. and puts him

  361. in the river.

  362. She had to have

  363. a lot of faith.

  364. Her faith wasn't,

  365. she didn't know

  366. whether Moses

  367. was going to survive

  368. or not.

  369. She had said,

  370. I've done everything

  371. I can do

  372. and I'm going to trust God.

  373. I'm going to trust

  374. His providence

  375. that God is going to do

  376. and has a plan

  377. for Moses.

  378. But think about

  379. the mercy

  380. shown to Jochebed.

  381. She does this,

  382. she steps out

  383. in faith

  384. and the story

  385. takes a surprising turn

  386. because who comes

  387. down by the river?

  388. Pharaoh's daughter.

  389. Now,

  390. Pharaoh's daughter,

  391. you say,

  392. well,

  393. she had compassion.

  394. You know what?

  395. She didn't have to have

  396. compassion on Moses.

  397. I want you to understand

  398. she recognized

  399. who he was.

  400. Now,

  401. I'm not talking about

  402. specifically family

  403. but she recognized

  404. he was a Hebrew.

  405. She knew what her father

  406. had said to do.

  407. What did her father

  408. command him to do?

  409. Toss him into the river.

  410. You know what she could have done

  411. when her maids

  412. brought her Moses?

  413. She could have just

  414. turned the basket

  415. upside down.

  416. But God says

  417. that she had compassion.

  418. I think God touched

  419. the heart

  420. of Pharaoh's daughter.

  421. Touched a note

  422. in a young lady

  423. when she saw

  424. a little baby cry.

  425. You know what?

  426. The one thing I've learned

  427. over the years

  428. if you get a baby

  429. to cry,

  430. every grandma,

  431. mom,

  432. little girl come,

  433. everybody,

  434. you know,

  435. it becomes like a magnet.

  436. You know,

  437. especially a little one.

  438. Everybody's like,

  439. why are they crying?

  440. You know what?

  441. God used that

  442. natural love

  443. in his providence

  444. to preserve Moses.

  445. But how did God

  446. have mercy?

  447. Think about that

  448. for a moment.

  449. God's mercy is

  450. Jochebed trusted

  451. God

  452. and God said,

  453. hey,

  454. here's your child back

  455. and I'll even

  456. give you a benefit.

  457. Somebody's going to

  458. pay you to raise him.

  459. Let me know

  460. the expenses.

  461. You know,

  462. I hear all the parents now,

  463. amen,

  464. that sounds good.

  465. You know,

  466. kids aren't cheap.

  467. They're beneficial,

  468. but it's not that

  469. they don't have a cost.

  470. But think about it,

  471. God's mercy allowed her

  472. not only to have her child back,

  473. but to get paid

  474. to raise him.

  475. God's mercy

  476. was there

  477. and we understand

  478. the picture here

  479. it's really

  480. an incredible

  481. miracle of God

  482. to see the daughter

  483. of the most powerful

  484. man in the world

  485. discovered a hidden baby

  486. that was forbidden

  487. and she had compassion.

  488. I want you to understand

  489. it wasn't coincidence,

  490. it was God's providence.

  491. God saw Jochebed,

  492. heard her prayers,

  493. knew her tears,

  494. felt her burden

  495. and miraculously

  496. intervened.

  497. You know,

  498. look at verse 9 there

  499. in our text.

  500. Notice what it tells us here

  501. and it says,

  502. And Pharaoh's daughter

  503. said unto her,

  504. Take this child away

  505. and nurse it for me

  506. and I will give thee

  507. thy wages.

  508. And the woman

  509. took the child

  510. and nursed it.

  511. You know,

  512. I think when Jochebed

  513. put Moses in the river

  514. that morning

  515. she had no idea

  516. what was going to play out.

  517. But I guarantee you

  518. she was happy

  519. at the end of the day.

  520. You know,

  521. what mom would not rejoice

  522. that her child

  523. was safe with her.

  524. God's mercy

  525. was amazing.

  526. This baby boy

  527. that she was hiding

  528. is now,

  529. she can carry him openly.

  530. She can be in the presence

  531. of even other Egyptians.

  532. Moses became,

  533. you might say,

  534. an untouchable

  535. Hebrew child.

  536. Nobody could do anything

  537. to him

  538. because why?

  539. He had the protection

  540. of Pharaoh.

  541. You know,

  542. you think about

  543. what God did there.

  544. He moved Pharaoh,

  545. or he moved Moses

  546. into a position

  547. that he could be protected.

  548. You know,

  549. Jochebed probably

  550. cared for Moses

  551. until he was

  552. five or six years old,

  553. his early development.

  554. Her influence

  555. was so formative

  556. on his life though

  557. that he grew up

  558. in an Egyptian palace.

  559. Forty years later

  560. he still knew

  561. that he was a Hebrew.

  562. I mean,

  563. stop and think about that.

  564. His mother's influence

  565. in the early years

  566. influenced him

  567. for the rest of his life.

  568. Never underestimate

  569. the influence of mom

  570. in the life of a kid,

  571. in the life of a child.

  572. It was through

  573. these early things

  574. of nurturing Moses

  575. that he had a firmly

  576. rooted identity

  577. as one of the people of God

  578. because even in discrimination,

  579. God's mercy is present.

  580. You know,

  581. we should always be looking

  582. where is God working?

  583. What is God doing

  584. through this?

  585. Because after many years,

  586. another Hebrew prophet,

  587. Jeremiah,

  588. was watching the people

  589. that was cruelly treated

  590. and invading the Babylonians.

  591. And Jerusalem was under siege

  592. and the people

  593. were starving to death

  594. in the streets

  595. and in the midst

  596. of oppression,

  597. Jeremiah called

  598. to God's mercies to mind.

  599. You know,

  600. look over to Lamentations chapter 3.

    Lamentations 3 chapter mention

  601. Lamentations chapter 3.

    Lamentations 3 chapter mention

  602. In the midst of that discrimination

  603. against Jerusalem

  604. and the prophet

  605. was there suffering with them.

  606. And he says this in verse 21.

  607. He says,

  608. And this I recall

  609. to my mind.

  610. You know,

  611. when things happen,

  612. we need to remember.

  613. We need to stop and consider.

  614. Therefore have I hope.

  615. It is of the Lord's mercies

  616. that we are not consumed

  617. because His compassions fail not.

  618. They renew every morning.

  619. And great is thy faithfulness.

  620. I want you to understand,

  621. Jeremiah wrote that

  622. in the face of great injustice

  623. and great struggle.

  624. He said,

  625. I'm tempted one direction,

  626. but he says,

  627. I recall to my mind

  628. of who God is

  629. and what God can do

  630. and therefore I have hope.

  631. I have hope.

  632. We can understand,

  633. we can respond to things

  634. when they're against us

  635. with faith in God

  636. and we'll see His mercy

  637. work through that.

  638. But think about even

  639. not only showing to Jochebed,

  640. but showing to Moses.

  641. You know,

  642. God not only showed mercy

  643. to Jochebed,

  644. He also did to Moses

  645. through the compassion

  646. Pharaoh's daughter had on him.

  647. You know,

  648. a young Hebrew boy

  649. that was spared from genocide

  650. in which he was supposed

  651. to have been killed,

  652. but instead he gets a place

  653. and a room in the palace.

  654. Not only is he alive

  655. and in the palace,

  656. there's something else

  657. that took place,

  658. the Bible tells us,

  659. that prepared Moses

  660. for what God had for him.

  661. Moses got the premium

  662. education of the day.

  663. I mean,

  664. he got all the best stuff.

  665. You know,

  666. look over to Acts chapter 7.

    Acts 7 chapter mention

  667. Acts chapter 7

    Acts 7 chapter mention

  668. gives us a little insight

  669. into this.

  670. Now notice here

  671. what happens.

  672. It says here in Acts 7, 21,

  673. it says,

  674. And when he was cast out,

  675. Pharaoh's daughter

  676. took him up

  677. and nourished him

  678. for her own son.

  679. And Moses was learned

  680. in all the wisdom

  681. of the Egyptian

  682. and was mighty

  683. in words

  684. and in deeds.

  685. Now,

  686. we'll look a little later

  687. as we get into Moses' life.

  688. It's interesting.

  689. At one time,

  690. he was bold.

  691. He was,

  692. I want everybody

  693. to know how smart he was.

  694. He wanted to understand

  695. that he was well-educated.

  696. He was well-spoken.

  697. He had all the right

  698. to credentials.

  699. I mean,

  700. there was no credentials

  701. that Moses missed out on.

  702. As being the son

  703. of Pharaoh's daughter,

  704. being recognized,

  705. that he had no restrictions

  706. of what he could learn.

  707. He had private tutors,

  708. most likely,

  709. coming in

  710. and just giving him

  711. all the stuff,

  712. making sure he understood.

  713. He had the best schooling,

  714. the best classes,

  715. you know.

  716. But it's important

  717. that even in the times

  718. when things don't seem right,

  719. we can give pause

  720. to thank God

  721. for the blessings

  722. he gives

  723. in spite of what happens.

  724. You know,

  725. we need to understand

  726. the way to overcome

  727. the hurt of discrimination

  728. is to give thanks.

  729. You know,

  730. when something is unjust to you,

  731. the best thing you can do

  732. is call to mind

  733. who God is.

  734. You don't have to thank God

  735. for what happened,

  736. but you can thank

  737. that he's a merciful God.

  738. Because you know what it does?

  739. It changes your perspective

  740. about what's happening.

  741. Because if you wather

  742. in a situation,

  743. when you wather around,

  744. and get yourself

  745. all messed up

  746. and tied up

  747. in the event

  748. or the dynamic

  749. of what somebody said

  750. or did,

  751. you know what happens?

  752. You become bitter.

  753. You become angry.

  754. You get an attitude

  755. of why is this happening to me?

  756. This isn't fair.

  757. But you know what?

  758. When we stop and think

  759. that the Bible tells us

  760. into all things

  761. give thanks.

  762. We can thank God

  763. he's still there

  764. even in the midst

  765. when things are not right.

  766. That God is there

  767. in a mighty way.

  768. Yep.

  769. Yep.

  770. Moses was cultivated

  771. in all the elements there,

  772. but he had overcome

  773. those things.

  774. And the right attitude

  775. is important for us.

  776. You know,

  777. take a look over

  778. to Psalm 106.

  779. Psalm 106 in verse 1

  780. says,

  781. Praise ye the Lord.

  782. O give thanks

  783. unto the Lord,

  784. for he is good.

  785. For his mercy

  786. does what?

  787. Endureth forever.

  788. You know what?

  789. We can rest assured

  790. when things aren't

  791. going the way

  792. we think they ought to do

  793. that God's mercies

  794. are still there.

  795. God's still merciful to us.

  796. You know,

  797. the mercies

  798. that God gives

  799. in the midst

  800. of discrimination

  801. is but a precursor

  802. to his commitment

  803. to vindicate

  804. those who suffer.

  805. You know,

  806. I want you to understand

  807. that God makes it

  808. very clear.

  809. Oftentimes we forget this.

  810. He says,

  811. Vengeance is mine,

  812. saith the Lord.

  813. You know,

  814. the one thing

  815. that will help you

  816. through that

  817. is to realize

  818. you're not the one

  819. that needs to solve

  820. the problem,

  821. but to realize

  822. God says,

  823. I'm going to hold

  824. to account

  825. those things.

  826. We can praise God

  827. because God's

  828. keeping a perfect record.

  829. You know,

  830. oftentimes in the Psalms

  831. you'll see David

  832. talk about,

  833. why do the wicked

  834. prosper?

  835. And if you read

  836. through those Psalms

  837. where he says that

  838. he always comes back

  839. to the fact that

  840. they're but for a season

  841. and they're going

  842. to be held

  843. to account.

  844. God's timing

  845. will be perfect.

  846. We need to trust God.

  847. You know,

  848. you think about

  849. Romans chapter 8,

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  850. I mean,

  851. verse 28

  852. is really the reality

  853. of what's happened

  854. here with Moses

  855. where it says,

  856. and we know

  857. all things work together

  858. for good

  859. to them that

  860. love God

  861. to them that are

  862. what?

  863. Called according

  864. to his purpose.

  865. All things work

  866. together for good.

  867. Now,

  868. I want you to understand

  869. it doesn't say

  870. everything is going

  871. to be good.

  872. I think sometimes

  873. we read that

  874. and we catch on

  875. that phrase

  876. and it's like,

  877. well,

  878. that means everything's

  879. going to be grand.

  880. No.

  881. It just says

  882. God's going to take

  883. everything that's

  884. happening in your life

  885. and if you trust him,

  886. he says he can turn

  887. that for your benefit

  888. and for his.

  889. To understand

  890. we can see

  891. God's mercy

  892. in that

  893. and understand

  894. the dynamic

  895. of Moses

  896. and God's mercy

  897. towards us.

  898. So we see

  899. the ministry of a mom,

  900. the mercy of God

  901. and then we see

  902. in this also

  903. the making of Moses.

  904. You know,

  905. as we survey

  906. Moses' life

  907. shows us how God

  908. in preserving

  909. this individual

  910. would one day

  911. enable him

  912. to be the deliverer

  913. of an entire nation.

  914. You know,

  915. Moses had

  916. a unique

  917. future

  918. ahead of him

  919. at this point.

  920. God developed

  921. Moses

  922. so that he would

  923. eventually lead

  924. God's people

  925. out of the oppression

  926. and bondage

  927. they had experienced.

  928. What Pharaoh

  929. intended for evil

  930. against God's people

  931. by killing

  932. all the children

  933. all the male children

  934. God took that

  935. very element

  936. and put Moses

  937. in the palace

  938. trained him up

  939. equipped him

  940. with everything

  941. he is going to need

  942. to know

  943. for a future thing

  944. God had for him.

  945. God was working

  946. there

  947. in his identity.

  948. Imagine

  949. Jochebed's influence

  950. on Moses' life

  951. was the strongest

  952. during his most

  953. formative years

  954. and though he grew up

  955. in the palace

  956. in Egypt

  957. he identified

  958. as a child

  959. of God.

  960. Now I want you

  961. to understand

  962. I'm going to

  963. sidetrack

  964. just for a moment

  965. here.

  966. As a parent

  967. I want you

  968. to understand

  969. your young

  970. children

  971. are formative.

  972. That's the reason

  973. we have a culture

  974. that wants to

  975. take your kids

  976. from you

  977. especially

  978. in their early

  979. years

  980. and form

  981. their thinking

  982. because you can

  983. direct a child

  984. of how they think

  985. how they perceive

  986. how they understand

  987. that's going

  988. to stay with

  989. them the rest

  990. of their life.

  991. It's either

  992. going to be

  993. for good

  994. or for bad.

  995. You know what?

  996. Let me just

  997. give an illustration

  998. here.

  999. Children that are

  1000. abused

  1001. it impacts

  1002. them the rest

  1003. of their life.

  1004. I'm not saying

  1005. they can overcome

  1006. it.

  1007. God says

  1008. his mercy

  1009. is able

  1010. to overcome

  1011. those things

  1012. but you know

  1013. what?

  1014. The things

  1015. that they taught

  1016. that they were

  1017. experienced

  1018. in younger years

  1019. impacts them.

  1020. It impacts

  1021. their decision

  1022. making.

  1023. It impacts

  1024. the way

  1025. they perceive

  1026. the world.

  1027. It's important

  1028. and I'll just

  1029. encourage parents

  1030. to take your

  1031. responsibility

  1032. for your children.

  1033. It's your

  1034. responsibility.

  1035. God's given

  1036. them to you

  1037. to prepare

  1038. them

  1039. especially

  1040. in those

  1041. formative

  1042. years

  1043. because there's

  1044. coming a day

  1045. they're going

  1046. to get older

  1047. and if you

  1048. haven't formed

  1049. things upright

  1050. you're going

  1051. to see it.

  1052. It starts

  1053. when they're

  1054. young.

  1055. It's not

  1056. easy

  1057. but it's

  1058. beneficial

  1059. to do

  1060. those things

  1061. and so

  1062. you know

  1063. the Bible

  1064. tells us

  1065. in Hebrews

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  1066. chapter 11

  1067. when it

  1068. talks about

  1069. the faith

  1070. of Moses

  1071. in verse 24

  1072. it says

  1073. when he was

  1074. come to

  1075. years

  1076. refused to

  1077. be called

  1078. the son

  1079. of Pharaoh's

  1080. daughter

  1081. choosing rather

  1082. to suffer

  1083. affliction

  1084. with the people

  1085. of God

  1086. and that

  1087. to enjoy

  1088. pleasure of

  1089. sin

  1090. for a season

  1091. esteeming

  1092. the reproach

  1093. of Christ's

  1094. greater riches

  1095. than the treasures

  1096. in Egypt

  1097. for he had

  1098. respect

  1099. under the

  1100. recompense

  1101. of reward.

  1102. In other words

  1103. what did

  1104. Moses'

  1105. mom teach

  1106. him?

  1107. That to be

  1108. honored by

  1109. God is more

  1110. important than

  1111. to be honored

  1112. by the world.

  1113. that's the

  1114. base principle

  1115. that Moses'

  1116. mom taught

  1117. him that's

  1118. mentioned here.

  1119. If stuck

  1120. with Moses

  1121. you better

  1122. understand where

  1123. you are with

  1124. God because

  1125. that's more

  1126. important than

  1127. where you

  1128. stand with

  1129. the world.

  1130. It impacted

  1131. his life.

  1132. He was a

  1133. man who

  1134. grew up and

  1135. purposely

  1136. identified with

  1137. God and

  1138. his people.

  1139. He was in

  1140. an Egyptian

  1141. world but

  1142. identified as

  1143. a child of

  1144. God.

  1145. I want you

  1146. to understand

  1147. that when

  1148. we talk

  1149. about identifying

  1150. it's not a

  1151. cultural identity.

  1152. Moses was

  1153. identifying with

  1154. a spiritual

  1155. heritage,

  1156. a spiritual

  1157. identity

  1158. of who

  1159. God is,

  1160. the one

  1161. that made

  1162. promises to

  1163. his forefathers

  1164. Abraham,

  1165. Isaac,

  1166. and Jacob.

  1167. You know

  1168. there's a

  1169. great pressure

  1170. today,

  1171. particularly on

  1172. our teens and

  1173. young adults

  1174. and even

  1175. adults today,

  1176. to conform

  1177. their identity

  1178. to a culture

  1179. that's anti-God,

  1180. anti-Christian,

  1181. and anti-Scripture.

  1182. Just do this

  1183. and be quiet

  1184. and it'll be

  1185. fine.

  1186. You know

  1187. what?

  1188. We need to

  1189. identify with

  1190. Christ.

  1191. We talked

  1192. about that

  1193. this morning,

  1194. didn't we?

  1195. And not

  1196. just in

  1197. salvation but

  1198. in our

  1199. life,

  1200. the things

  1201. that we

  1202. do,

  1203. the choices

  1204. we make.

  1205. To identify

  1206. with him,

  1207. just as Moses

  1208. made an

  1209. intentional thing

  1210. to say,

  1211. I'm going to

  1212. follow what

  1213. God would

  1214. have.

  1215. Just as we

  1216. have to

  1217. follow Christ,

  1218. must be

  1219. ready to

  1220. identify with

  1221. Christ no

  1222. matter the

  1223. cost.

  1224. Sometimes you're

  1225. going to find

  1226. out there's a

  1227. cost to

  1228. standing for

  1229. Christ.

  1230. Are you

  1231. willing to

  1232. pay the

  1233. price or

  1234. is it

  1235. easier just

  1236. to go

  1237. with the

  1238. flow?

  1239. You think

  1240. about today

  1241. when you

  1242. think about

  1243. the Bible.

  1244. We live

  1245. in a

  1246. generation.

  1247. If you

  1248. teach things

  1249. to your

  1250. children or

  1251. make public

  1252. statements about

  1253. marriage or

  1254. about identity

  1255. of male and

  1256. female, they

  1257. say, oh

  1258. you're a

  1259. bigot,

  1260. you're this,

  1261. they're that.

  1262. They call

  1263. you all sorts

  1264. of names.

  1265. You know

  1266. what that

  1267. is?

  1268. That's

  1269. pressure to

  1270. conform, to

  1271. identify with

  1272. the world

  1273. instead of

  1274. identifying with

  1275. Christ.

  1276. God says

  1277. something totally

  1278. contrary.

  1279. What God

  1280. says is there's

  1281. men and women

  1282. and there ought

  1283. to be a

  1284. marriage between

  1285. a man and a

  1286. woman.

  1287. We ought not

  1288. to kill our

  1289. offspring.

  1290. You know,

  1291. it's one of

  1292. those things,

  1293. the choice

  1294. happened way

  1295. before that

  1296. moment.

  1297. But you

  1298. know what,

  1299. the world

  1300. loves to

  1301. twist to

  1302. say, just

  1303. go along

  1304. with this,

  1305. it'll be

  1306. fine.

  1307. It's

  1308. amazing how

  1309. many people

  1310. that say

  1311. they follow

  1312. the word

  1313. of God

  1314. suddenly deviate

  1315. when the

  1316. world puts

  1317. pressure.

  1318. And sometimes

  1319. it's as simple

  1320. just sit down

  1321. and be quiet.

  1322. The thing

  1323. about the

  1324. world's

  1325. dynamic is

  1326. you can

  1327. have that

  1328. opinion,

  1329. just be

  1330. quiet about

  1331. it.

  1332. Sometimes

  1333. you're not

  1334. going to

  1335. be accepted.

  1336. You know,

  1337. think about

  1338. creation.

  1339. If you

  1340. take what

  1341. God says

  1342. in Genesis

  1343. 1 and 2

  1344. literally,

  1345. you're going

  1346. to have

  1347. people in

  1348. academia say

  1349. well, I

  1350. got news

  1351. for them.

  1352. When you

  1353. actually do

  1354. do science,

  1355. when you

  1356. actually do

  1357. understand what

  1358. science is,

  1359. it lines up

  1360. with the

  1361. word of

  1362. God.

  1363. That's a

  1364. whole other

  1365. lesson.

  1366. But Moses

  1367. chose to

  1368. identify as

  1369. a Hebrew.

  1370. I want you

  1371. to understand

  1372. it wasn't

  1373. easy because

  1374. remember,

  1375. he grew up

  1376. in the

  1377. palace most

  1378. of his

  1379. teenage years

  1380. through his

  1381. early teens.

  1382. But at

  1383. this point

  1384. when Moses

  1385. tries to

  1386. get ahead

  1387. of God,

  1388. we find

  1389. he's 40

  1390. years old.

  1391. That's a

  1392. good span

  1393. of time.

  1394. As I

  1395. say,

  1396. there's a

  1397. lot of

  1398. water under

  1399. the bridge

  1400. between the

  1401. time he

  1402. was in

  1403. the palace

  1404. up to

  1405. that point.

  1406. He's

  1407. probably

  1408. living in

  1409. the palace

  1410. for 35

  1411. years.

  1412. But he

  1413. identified as

  1414. a Hebrew.

  1415. But even

  1416. in, not

  1417. only in his

  1418. identity, but

  1419. in his

  1420. failure.

  1421. You know,

  1422. although Moses

  1423. showed a

  1424. strong faith

  1425. in his choice

  1426. to identify

  1427. with the people

  1428. of God rather

  1429. than being

  1430. called an

  1431. Egyptian,

  1432. when he

  1433. witnessed

  1434. discrimination,

  1435. he reacted

  1436. in the flesh

  1437. rather than

  1438. in faith.

  1439. Now, this

  1440. is important

  1441. because Moses

  1442. failed because

  1443. he got ahead

  1444. of God.

  1445. He said,

  1446. I'm going to

  1447. take care of

  1448. the problem.

  1449. Look here in

  1450. Exodus chapter 2.

    Exodus 2 chapter mention

  1451. Look down at

  1452. verse 11.

  1453. It says,

  1454. It came to

  1455. pass in those

  1456. days when

  1457. Moses was

  1458. growing that

  1459. he went out

  1460. unto his

  1461. brethren and

  1462. looked on

  1463. their burdens

  1464. and he spied

  1465. an Egyptian

  1466. smiting a

  1467. Hebrew, one

  1468. of the brethren,

  1469. and he looked

  1470. this way and

  1471. that way,

  1472. and when he

  1473. saw that there

  1474. was no man,

  1475. he slew the

  1476. Egyptian and

  1477. hid him in

  1478. the sand.

  1479. You know,

  1480. think about

  1481. what happened

  1482. here.

  1483. Moses has

  1484. taken the

  1485. oppression of

  1486. his people

  1487. into his

  1488. own hands.

  1489. I'm going to

  1490. fix it my

  1491. way.

  1492. Look over to

  1493. Acts chapter 7

    Acts 7 chapter mention

  1494. in the New

  1495. Testament because

  1496. another insight

  1497. you have into

  1498. this, Acts

    Acts 7 chapter mention

  1499. chapter 7,

  1500. down in verse

  1501. 24, it tells

  1502. us this,

  1503. it says,

  1504. Seeing one

  1505. of them suffer

  1506. wrong, he

  1507. defending him,

  1508. avenged him,

  1509. that was

  1510. oppressed, and

  1511. smote the

  1512. Egyptian, for

  1513. he supposed

  1514. his brethren

  1515. would have

  1516. understood how

  1517. that God by

  1518. his hand would

  1519. deliver them, but

  1520. they understood

  1521. not.

  1522. That's a lot of

  1523. insight into

  1524. Moses' mindset.

  1525. What was

  1526. Moses thinking?

  1527. He says, God

  1528. raised me up and

  1529. I'm going to

  1530. take my authority

  1531. God's given to

  1532. me.

  1533. You know what,

  1534. oftentimes people

  1535. try to take

  1536. authority that

  1537. God's given, but

  1538. I want you

  1539. understand, authority

  1540. isn't power,

  1541. authority is

  1542. responsibility.

  1543. What did

  1544. Jesus say?

  1545. If you're a

  1546. leader, you're

  1547. what?

  1548. A servant.

  1549. Responsibility.

  1550. Moses said, I

  1551. have power, and

  1552. God says, no, you

  1553. have a responsibility.

  1554. You know, Moses

  1555. had good

  1556. intentions.

  1557. You know,

  1558. oftentimes we

  1559. justify things, but

  1560. my intentions were

  1561. good.

  1562. You know, I want

  1563. you to understand

  1564. that good

  1565. intentions don't

  1566. always produce the

  1567. right outcomes.

  1568. when we take

  1569. those intentions

  1570. out of and go

  1571. against what God

  1572. has told us to

  1573. do.

  1574. You know, usually

  1575. when we think

  1576. we're ready to do

  1577. something great and

  1578. noble and know

1579. just the way to do

  1580. to go about it,

  1581. that's a good

  1582. intention, but we

  1583. need to understand

  1584. that we're not

  1585. ready.

  1586. Because until we

  1587. have faith in

  1588. God should lead

  1589. us to bold

  1590. actions, but we

  1591. need to trust God

  1592. in that.

  1593. To understand

  1594. that Moses

  1595. had to trust

  1596. God in

  1597. God's timing.

  1598. Instead of

  1599. waiting on

  1600. God's instruction,

  1601. he got impatient.

  1602. You know, you

  1603. can read through

  1604. scripture, there's a

  1605. whole lot of

  1606. people you find

  1607. that believed

  1608. in God but got

  1609. impatient with

  1610. God.

  1611. Got ahead of

  1612. God.

  1613. And you think

  1614. back, Abraham

  1615. was a prime

  1616. example, him and

  1617. Sarah.

  1618. God promised

  1619. them a son.

  1620. They couldn't

  1621. have a son,

  1622. they couldn't

  1623. have a son,

  1624. said, we're

  1625. going to solve

  1626. the problem

  1627. for God.

  1628. What did they

  1629. have?

  1630. They had a

  1631. good intention.

  1632. I needed

  1633. air.

  1634. They got ahead

  1635. of God and

  1636. caused a lot

  1637. of grief.

  1638. If you study

  1639. history, you'll

  1640. find out his

  1641. choice still

  1642. impacts the

  1643. world today.

  1644. If you want

  1645. to see the

  1646. ripple effect

  1647. of the world

  1648. around us.

  1649. But also in

  1650. his solitude,

  1651. you know, God

  1652. knew that Moses

  1653. would never

  1654. lead Israel out

  1655. of Egypt with

  1656. an impatient

  1657. anger.

  1658. So God

  1659. brought Moses

  1660. to the

  1661. backside of

  1662. the desert

  1663. where he

  1664. would spend

  1665. the next

  1666. 40 years

  1667. herding sheep.

  1668. You know,

  1669. I've never

  1670. been around

  1671. sheep much,

  1672. but I've

  1673. talked to

  1674. some people

  1675. who raise

  1676. sheep.

  1677. They're not

  1678. the brightest

  1679. critters.

  1680. one thing

  1681. about it.

  1682. To raise

  1683. sheep, you

  1684. have to

  1685. learn patience.

  1686. You have

  1687. to learn

  1688. to wait.

  1689. You know,

  1690. it tells us

  1691. in Exodus

  1692. 3 that

  1693. Moses kept

  1694. the flock

  1695. of Jethro,

  1696. his father-in-law,

  1697. the priest of

  1698. Midian, and

  1699. he led the

  1700. flock to the

  1701. backside of

  1702. the desert

  1703. and came to

  1704. the mount

  1705. of God

  1706. to Horeb.

  1707. You know,

  1708. I'm imagining

  1709. here that Moses

  1710. must have

  1711. thought he

  1712. lost his

  1713. only opportunity

  1714. to deliver

  1715. Israel.

  1716. Now he's out

  1717. here cast out

  1718. into the desert.

  1719. But you know

  1720. what?

  1721. Even in this,

  1722. God used it

  1723. to prepare

  1724. Moses for

  1725. what he

  1726. needed to

  1727. do.

  1728. Because you

  1729. stop and

  1730. think about

  1731. for a moment,

  1732. was the

  1733. anger-filled,

  1734. I want to

  1735. do it my

  1736. way, going

  1737. to be a

  1738. good fit

  1739. for the

  1740. children of

  1741. Israel coming

  1742. out of

  1743. Egypt?

  1744. Did they

  1745. test patience

  1746. a little

  1747. bit?

  1748. You know,

  1749. the children

  1750. of Israel

  1751. tested God,

  1752. they tested

  1753. Moses.

  1754. I mean,

  1755. Moses would

  1756. have reacted

  1757. totally different

  1758. when God

  1759. said,

  1760. well,

  1761. I'll wipe

  1762. them out,

  1763. we'll start

  1764. again with

  1765. you.

  1766. And Moses

  1767. pleaded for

  1768. the people.

  1769. You know

  1770. what the

  1771. Moses in

  1772. Egypt would

  1773. have done?

  1774. Yeah,

  1775. God,

  1776. go ahead

  1777. and do

  1778. it,

  1779. they deserve

  1780. it.

  1781. But you

  1782. know what

  1783. the Moses

  1784. that learned

  1785. to really

  1786. trust God

  1787. and God's

  1788. timing said,

  1789. Lord,

  1790. have mercy

  1791. on him.

  1792. He was a

  1793. meek man,

  1794. the Bible

  1795. tells us.

  1796. He was a

  1797. proud,

  1798. arrogant,

  1799. young man

  1800. that left

  1801. Egypt,

  1802. and he

  1803. returned a

  1804. humble,

  1805. willing to

  1806. follow God.

  1807. Man.

  1808. Willing to

  1809. trust God.

  1810. When God

  1811. allows trials

  1812. into your

  1813. life,

  1814. he desires

  1815. to mature

  1816. and strengthen

  1817. your faith.

  1818. Moses'

  1819. trials in

  1820. his life

  1821. matured his

  1822. faith to

  1823. another level.

  1824. He was

  1825. bold,

  1826. but he

  1827. wasn't mature.

  1828. If we're

  1829. going to be

  1830. bold for

  1831. Christ,

  1832. we also need

  1833. to be

  1834. mature.

  1835. Because in

  1836. other words,

  1837. you get ahead

  1838. of God.

  1839. God

  1840. will

  1841. do

  1842. things

  1843. our

  1844. ways.

  1845. Moses'

  1846. early,

  1847. undisciplined,

  1848. immature

  1849. faith led

  1850. him to

  1851. taking things

  1852. into his

  1853. own hand.

  1854. He had

  1855. to learn

  1856. that God

  1857. was not

  1858. interested in

  1859. what we

  1860. can offer

  1861. in the

  1862. way of

  1863. our

  1864. energetic

  1865. anger.

  1866. He was

  1867. simply

  1868. looking for

  1869. our

  1870. faith-filled

  1871. !

  1872. obedience.

  1873. That leads

  1874. us to the

  1875. last thing

  1876. in his

  1877. surrender.

  1878. Forty

  1879. years later,

  1880. we meet

  1881. Moses.

  1882. He's a

  1883. humble

  1884. man.

  1885. After a

  1886. direct

  1887. encounter

  1888. with God,

  1889. he's a

  1890. transformed

  1891. man.

  1892. At the

  1893. burning

  1894. bush,

  1895. he met

  1896. God and

  1897. he was

  1898. changed

  1899. once again.

  1900. God

  1901. called

  1902. Moses to

  1903. the very

  1904. job he

  1905. had earlier

  1906. tried to

  1907. assume.

  1908. You know,

  1909. it's

  1910. interesting

  1911. that the

  1912. bold,

  1913. well-spoken,

  1914. kind of

  1915. outgoing,

  1916. and even

  1917. you might

  1918. say,

  1919. I imagine

  1920. Moses

  1921. was even

  1922. might have

  1923. been considered

  1924. a little

  1925. arrogant in

  1926. his attitude

  1927. when he

  1928. left Egypt.

  1929. Think about

  1930. when God

  1931. talks to

  1932. him at

  1933. the burning

  1934. bush,

  1935. and he

  1936. says,

  1937. Moses,

  1938. this is what

  1939. I want

  1940. you to

  1941. do,

  1942. what does

  1943. Moses

  1944. say?

  1945. Lord,

  1946. I can't

  1947. talk,

  1948. I can't

  1949. do,

  1950. and we

  1951. know that

  1952. he was

  1953. trained in

  1954. all the

  1955. right things,

  1956. he knew

  1957. all the

  1958. things.

  1959. His

  1960. past

  1961. failures

  1962. thought it

  1963. made him

  1964. unable to

  1965. do it,

  1966. and we

  1967. understood that

  1968. he says

  1969. that Israelites

  1970. would not

  1971. believe that

  1972. God had

  1973. sent him,

  1974. and they

  1975. would want

  1976. evidence,

  1977. you know,

  1978. Israelites

  1979. would not

  1980. believe him

  1981. or obey

  1982. his voice,

  1983. he could

  1984. not speak

  1985. with elegance,

  1986. but was

  1987. now slow

  1988. of speech,

  1989. but finally

  1990. Moses surrenders

  1991. to God's

  1992. will,

  1993. it brought

  1994. him to

  1995. the place

  1996. of humility

  1997. that God

  1998. could use

  1999. him.

  2000. You know,

  2001. sometimes God

  2002. has to bring

  2003. us to a

  2004. place where

  2005. he can use

  2006. us,

  2007. because there's

  2008. things in our

  2009. life that need

  2010. to mature for

  2011. what God has

  2012. for us,

  2013. because God

  2014. wants us to

  2015. mature in

  2016. our faith.

  2017. Because ultimately

  2018. we see God's

  2019. triumph through

  2020. it.

  2021. You know,

  2022. we see as God

  2023. uses Moses to

  2024. lead the children

  2025. of Israel out

  2026. of Egypt.

  2027. What started

  2028. in oppression,

  2029. God made a

  2030. way of

  2031. deliverance.

  2032. When things

  2033. are unfair,

  2034. don't get

  2035. bitter and

  2036. angry,

  2037. and try to

  2038. do it your

  2039. own way,

  2040. but look for

  2041. God's instruction

  2042. on how God

  2043. wants you to

  2044. handle the

  2045. situation.

  2046. Because what's

  2047. God doing?

  2048. He's maturing

  2049. you for

  2050. service.

  2051. Let's pray.

  2052. Heavenly

  2053. Fathers, we

  2054. come before

  2055. you this

  2056. morning.

  2057. Lord, we

  2058. just thank

  2059. you and

  2060. praise you

  2061. for your

  2062. word.

  2063. Thank you.
