  1. Go ahead and take your Bibles, turn over to 2 Corinthians chapter 4, 2 Corinthians chapter 4 this morning.

2 Corinthians 4 chapter mention 2 Corinthians 4 chapter mention

  2. !

  3. You know, when the Lord brings a couple together as husband and wife, just as He did when He brought Adam and Eve together in the garden,

  4. the Bible tells us that couple becomes one flesh.

  5. And it really, as we've seen, reveals a relationship and a picture of Christ and His church.

  6. There's a spiritual reality that takes place in that.

  7. But while this relationship, you might say, is divinely designed, and it's divinely designed to last, it is not without its challenges.

  8. You know, life is filled with challenges, problems, struggles.

  9. You know, if I was to ask today, how many had a problem this week?

  10. You know, I don't think there'd be a—nope, nobody could not raise their hand.

  11. Everybody faces something.

  12. You know, the struggles that are well aware, you know, Job, you know, was a man in the Bible that definitely faced struggles and trials.

  13. And Job said this in Job 14, he said,

  14. Man is born of a woman of a few days and full of trouble.

  15. You know, it's like the reality is if you come into this life, there's going to be problems.

  16. There's going to be challenges.

  17. There's going to be things that we face.

  18. And while we might not want to hear that truth, it is a reality that we'll face and deals with things we have to deal with because we're going to be confronted with these challenges.

  19. And the problem with the challenges oftentimes is they are confusing and they're conflicting in our life.

  20. You know, sometimes challenges aren't as clear that we'd like to make them.

  21. You know, we oftentimes like things to be black or white.

  22. And oftentimes there's a lot more struggle involved because it involves all these different elements of our life, our emotions, our thoughts, our desires, all play into that.

  23. When we realize that as we're going to overcome challenges, you know, challenges are something God gives us for a reason.

  24. You know, oftentimes we look at challenges.

  25. Why did God give this to me?

  26. Or why do I have to go through this?

  27. But instead, we ought to be looking at least logically at it and say, why did God allow this?

  28. What's going on?

  29. How is God going to use this in my life?

  30. Because we're going to see here that the Apostle Paul here, 2 Corinthians chapter 4, reveals a very important dynamic of dealing with struggles and what takes place.

    2 Corinthians 4 chapter mention

  31. Because when we look together, life is just that.

  32. When we come together, it's a blessing.

  33. But those trials and struggles are often those things which can break us, which often break the ones involved.

  34. You know, why would God allow challenges to break us?

  35. You know, some challenges break your heart.

  36. Some break you physically.

  37. Some break you spiritually, you might say, of just getting things right with God.

  38. But, you know, how are you going to navigate those things and to walk through those challenges?

  39. And we're going to see here that the role that faith and unity and understanding play in overcoming life's challenges here this morning.

  40. Because as we, before we read the passage, I just want to kind of set the stage here a little bit.

  41. Because Paul reminds us in 2 Corinthians chapter 4 that the ministry that you have is not without challenges.

    2 Corinthians 4 chapter mention

  42. You know, marriage is a ministry that you've been given.

  43. You know, family is a ministry that everybody's been given.

  44. Those are things that are there.

  45. So when we talk about ministry, those are things that are your responsibility as a believer to do that.

  46. And here in 2 Corinthians 4, Paul reminds us that ministry will have challenges and it requires God's mercy to continue.

  47. And it's in these times that take place in the life of a believer that it becomes clear of what's happening.

  48. Because he speaks here about every believer possesses something.

  49. He talks about every believer believes the light of the gospel that's shown in your heart.

  50. And then the Holy Spirit comes and dwells within every believer.

  51. You are a vessel that possesses something of great power.

  52. You possess the Spirit of God when you're saved.

  53. He dwells within you.

  54. And we see here as this becomes clear in this, let's take a look here in the scripture.

  55. If you want to stand together for honor reading of the Word of God in 2 Corinthians chapter 4.

    2 Corinthians 4 chapter mention

  56. We'll pick up in verse 7 here this morning.

  57. It says this,

  58. Let's pray.

  59. Heavenly Fathers, we come before you this morning.

  60. Lord, we just thank you for your Word.

  61. Lord, we're thankful for the reality of who you are, the power that we have through your Spirit that lives and dwells within every believer here this morning.

  62. Lord, I pray just have your hand upon each heart, each life here today to realize how you use these challenges, these obstacles,

  63. the things that often break us in life.

  64. And Lord, how you use those for your glory and your honor.

  65. And Lord, our responsibility to recognize those things.

  66. And Lord, to be willing to submit to your will and your way in our life.

  67. And Lord, we just ask it all here this morning.

  68. In Jesus' name, amen.

  69. May we be seated.

  70. You know, we see here that Paul makes a statement here this morning describing us.

  71. The Word of God describes us throughout.

  72. Oftentimes we're described as vessels.

  73. You know, we're a vessel.

  74. We're often compared to a vessel.

  75. And he speaks about here being an earthen vessel.

  76. What's he talking about?

  77. He's talking about a clay pot.

  78. You know, he's basically talking about a storage container.

  79. And the one thing that you realize if you understand anything about a clay pot, it's a fragile item.

  80. Some may be slightly more durable than others.

  81. And they might serve different purposes and uses.

  82. But the one reality is, is they're all fragile.

  83. They're all breakable.

  84. You know, that's the reason it's...

  85. Have you ever noticed when they do archaeology, what do they always find?

  86. They find what?

  87. Broken vessels.

  88. Broken pots.

  89. Pieces of pottery.

  90. Because they get used for their purpose, but yet they almost always get broken.

  91. Rarely do they find one that's not broken.

  92. Why?

  93. Because it's been put into service.

  94. And when it's been put into service, some things happen.

  95. And we see here that this weak vessel, the weakness of the vessel, that the light is revealed that is in it.

  96. Now notice here verse 7 with me this morning.

  97. Notice what it says.

  98. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels.

  99. Think about what treasure is he talking about.

  100. You know, what treasure is there in an earthen vessel?

  101. In our vessel is exactly what he's speaking of in verse 6.

  102. He's talking about the reality that once you're saved, the power of God dwells within you.

  103. That reality is very present, a very actual and factual thing.

  104. And we say, why would God want to indwell?

  105. Why would he want to put himself into a fragile vessel?

  106. And we're going to look at that this morning.

  107. But, you know, look back into 1 Corinthians chapter 1 for a moment.

    1 Corinthians 1 chapter mention

  108. 1 Corinthians chapter 1.

    1 Corinthians 1 chapter mention

  109. Think about what's being said here.

  110. Because oftentimes what we think and what God thinks is totally different.

  111. You know, his ways are higher than our ways and his thoughts than our thoughts.

  112. Because our thinking would be, if I have something of value, I'm going to put it in the most secure, the most stable, the most indestructible item that we have.

  113. You know, you think about that, we call them safes.

  114. I mean, we build safes to say nothing can happen to what's valuable within.

  115. But, you know, God does it a little differently.

  116. He gives what is the most valuable thing we can possess.

  117. And he allows it to be put into something that's fragile.

  118. And look at what he says here in 1 Corinthians 1 verse 27.

    1 Corinthians 1:27

  119. He says, but God hath chosen what?

  120. The foolish things of the world to confound the wise.

  121. And God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things that are mighty.

  122. And the base things of the world, the things that are despised, God hath chosen.

  123. Yea, the things which are not, to bring to naught the things that are.

  124. You know, I want you to see here, God intentionally uses things that are fragile.

  125. He uses us.

  126. God allows us to have his power within.

  127. And so, how do we come through challenges?

  128. Because remember, challenges are going to be detrimental to something that's fragile.

  129. Challenges that we face, the things that we come up in life, the struggles.

  130. But I want you to see here that when struggles come, oftentimes it does crack the pot.

  131. But I want you to see this morning, God allows it for a reason.

  132. Because, you know, until we are broken, it's hard to let God shine through.

  133. Because our pride gets in the way.

  134. Our pride desires what we want.

  135. We're going to see here this morning, because when it comes to recognizing struggles and getting through struggles,

  136. the one thing we need to realize is, especially in marriage, the one with you is as fragile earthen vessel as you are.

  137. When we realize we're dealing with people who are fragile earthen vessels,

  138. but yet if they're saved, they contain the same power of God.

  139. They contain God's spirit within them.

  140. And we need to recognize God's power in weakness.

  141. When we recognize what God is doing, because we don't understand this picture,

  142. we have expectations of somebody else to say, why didn't you do differently?

  143. But, you know, when things are broken, I want you to see here,

  144. God, this whole picture here is that when it's broken, God's glory shines through.

  145. What is within comes out.

  146. You know, that's pretty simple.

  147. If you fill a pot with something and you put a lid on it,

  148. when you break it, what do you do?

  149. You find out exactly what's inside.

  150. You find, because what is inside is clearly revealed to us,

  151. because consider what we're compared to.

  152. You know, we like to think of ourselves as powerful and strong.

  153. You know, we like to think of ourselves, well, I can endure anything.

  154. But think about it.

  155. God refers to us many times in scriptures as a weak vessel, an earthen vessel,

  156. something that can be easily cracked, something that can be easily broken.

  157. And we oftentimes don't want to think of ourselves in that context,

  158. but these vessels that are spoken of here are specifically believers,

  159. because notice what he says here.

  160. Look again at verse 7.

  161. It says that we have this treasure in earthen vessels,

  162. that the excellency of the power may be of God and not of us.

  163. You know, fragile jars of clay have been formed to contain what is within.

  164. These are believers that he's talking about,

  165. those who have called upon the name of the Lord,

  166. whose presence and power of God is within.

  167. Think about what the scripture tells us.

  168. He tells us this in Colossians 1.27.

  169. It says,

  170. Which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

  171. You know, when we get saved, you have Christ in you.

  172. 2 Corinthians 1.22 says,

  173. Who have also sealed us and give us the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.

  174. Matter of fact, if you don't have the Spirit of God, you're in trouble.

  175. Notice 1 John 4.13 tells us this,

  176. Hereby we know that we dwell in him and that he in us,

  177. because he has given us his Spirit.

  178. The Spirit of God dwells within every believer.

  179. If you have not the Spirit, you're not born again.

  180. I want you to understand the two go hand in hand.

  181. There is no, I hope so or I think so.

  182. You either have or you don't.

  183. There's no in between.

  184. Oftentimes people want to make a contrast to say,

  185. Well, maybe so or maybe not.

  186. I want you to understand when it comes to salvation, there's no maybe so.

  187. It's either you are or you're not.

  188. You know, and when these challenges come,

  189. especially in the life of a believer,

  190. it reveals what is within.

  191. Because when we have the light and the glorious hope of the gospel within,

  192. when we face challenges, even things that break us,

  193. you know what happens?

  194. What is within comes out.

  195. It's revealed in it.

  196. Oftentimes it's uncomfortable to understand this.

  197. But let's take a picture of what the Bible shows us here,

  198. of what the apostles talking about.

  199. Because when challenges come, it reveals what's within.

  200. And the picture here is displayed.

  201. Turn to Judges chapter 7 for a moment.

    Judges 7 chapter mention

  202. Judges chapter 7, because here we have Gideon.

    Judges 7 chapter mention

  203. And here is Gideon.

  204. And he comes through in chapter 7.

  205. And he starts up,

  206. Weeding down the number of people to go up against the enemy.

  207. You know, they're facing a great foe.

  208. And so Gideon puts out the call.

  209. And all these guys come.

  210. And God looks around and tells Gideon there's too many.

  211. And they start going through a process of weeding all this down.

  212. And he gets down to 300.

  213. And as he's down to 300,

  214. look at verse 16.

  215. It says,

  216. And he divided the 300 men into three companies.

  217. And he put a trumpet in every man's hand

  218. with empty pitchers.

  219. And notice this.

  220. And lamps within the pitchers.

  221. So I want you to get the picture here.

  222. What he has?

  223. He has an earthen vessel.

  224. And they put the lamp inside the torch.

  225. The light is now inside the vessel.

  226. Now, I want you to see here what happens here.

  227. Because he's hiding within the vessel the light.

  228. Now, these 300 guys,

  229. this is a great battle plan, really.

  230. But I want you to see the picture that's shown here

  231. because there's something that happens

  232. when the vessel's broken.

  233. When the vessel's broken,

  234. something amazing takes place.

  235. Notice here down in verse 20,

  236. it says,

  237. And the three companies blew the trumpets.

  238. And notice what?

  239. They break the pitchers

  240. and held the lamps in their left hands

  241. and trumpets in their right hand

  242. to blow withal.

  243. And they cried,

  244. The sword of the Lord and of Gideon.

  245. Now, I want you to see here.

  246. This is the same picture

  247. because what happened is

  248. is when the light was revealed

  249. within the broken vessel,

  250. the power of God was revealed

  251. because God used this

  252. to defeat the enemy.

  253. The power was revealed

  254. not when the vessel was whole,

  255. but when that was within,

  256. when the vessel was broken.

  257. They broke the vessel.

  258. The light lit up.

  259. It startled all the enemy.

  260. And what's the picture?

  261. It's a picture of God's power.

  262. 300 overwhelmed,

  263. a force that should have

  264. never even been able

  265. to take on with 300 people.

  266. God used that

  267. when the light within

  268. was showing forth.

  269. It changed everything.

  270. Now, notice here,

  271. look back up in verse 6

  272. of our text

  273. where we were earlier.

  274. Now, notice here in verse 6,

  275. chapter 4,

  276. it says in 2 Corinthians,

  277. for God who commanded

  278. the light to shine out

  279. of darkness

  280. has shined in our hearts

  281. to give the light

  282. of the knowledge

  283. of the glory of God

  284. in the face of Jesus Christ.

  285. But we have this treasure.

  286. What treasure do we have?

  287. We have the light

  288. of the glorious gospel

  289. of Jesus Christ within.

  290. That God has changed us.

  291. You know,

  292. it's in that time

  293. of brokenness

  294. that God is revealed.

  295. You know,

  296. when God allows

  297. challenges in life,

  298. none of us sign up.

  299. But you know,

  300. those challenges

  301. God permits

  302. reveals what's within.

  303. It allows the light

  304. of the power

  305. of the gospel

  306. of Jesus Christ

  307. a changed life

  308. to shine forth.

  309. You know,

  310. as a believer,

  311. we ought to respond

  312. to tragedies

  313. and struggles

  314. and trials

  315. differently.

  316. oftentimes we want

  317. to react like

  318. the world reacts.

  319. But you know,

  320. as a believer,

  321. if the light of Christ

  322. is going to shine through,

  323. when something

  324. breaks the pot,

  325. the light of within

  326. ought to shine out.

  327. It ought to have

  328. an impact

  329. on those around.

  330. Because it's in times

  331. of brokenness

  332. that God has revealed.

  333. It's not by our strength

  334. that we overcome,

  335. but by His.

  336. And we need to trust

  337. the Lord

  338. in the struggles

  339. of life.

  340. You know,

  341. oftentimes we try

  342. to overcome

  343. Him in our own power.

  344. And God says,

  345. I'm allowing the pot

  346. to be broken

  347. that my power

  348. shall be brought forth.

  349. That it would shine forth.

  350. Because look at the end

  351. of verse 6 here.

  352. Notice what it tells us here.

  353. Or excuse me,

  354. verse 7.

  355. It tells us very clearly.

  356. It says that the excellency

  357. of the power of God,

  358. that the excellency

  359. of the power

  360. may be of God.

  361. And notice that last phrase.

  362. And what?

  363. Not of us.

  364. It's not the vessel,

  365. but it's what's within

  366. the vessel.

  367. You know,

  368. what's within

  369. makes a difference.

  370. Is the power of God

  371. present in you?

  372. That's the Spirit of God

  373. that dwells in you.

  374. It's the Spirit of God

  375. that dwells

  376. in every believer.

  377. The Spirit of God

  378. must be within

  379. each one

  380. that,

  381. but that happens

  382. when they call

  383. upon Him.

  384. But when two people

  385. come together

  386. in a relationship,

  387. you know what happens

  388. sometimes?

  389. There's a lot of conflict

  390. that happens.

  391. And when struggles come,

  392. you know what?

  393. Sometimes when one of them

  394. is broken

  395. or both of them

  396. are broken,

  397. they don't allow

  398. the power of God

  399. within to work through.

  400. Because when God

  401. allows things

  402. to break us,

  403. it ought to reveal

  404. the power of God

  405. that's taken place

  406. in our lives.

  407. It ought to reveal

  408. what God has done

  409. for us.

  410. You know,

  411. that's why it's important

  412. and critical.

  413. You know,

  414. when people get married,

  415. it's important

  416. that we're not

  417. unequally yoked.

  418. You know what happens

  419. when you have a vessel

  420. that's filled

  421. with worldly things

  422. that doesn't have

  423. the Spirit of God

  424. against one

  425. that has the Spirit of God?

  426. You know what's

  427. going to happen

  428. in a relationship?

  429. It's going to be

  430. a big conflict.

  431. Why?

  432. Because they don't

  433. recognize

  434. what's taking place.

  435. They don't recognize

  436. what's,

  437. they're not on the same page,

  438. the same powers

  439. are not working

  440. alongside

  441. and encouraging

  442. one another.

  443. You know,

  444. we need to rely

  445. upon the Lord

  446. to say,

  447. Lord,

  448. why are you allowing

  449. this in our life?

  450. Because notice

  451. how he encourages us

  452. through this.

  453. Because we face

  454. challenges together

  455. in unity.

  456. Notice the next

  457. verse there.

  458. Notice what he says.

  459. He says,

  460. we are troubled

  461. on every side

  462. yet not distressed.

  463. We are perplexed

  464. but not in despair.

  465. You know,

  466. it's very simply this,

  467. the dangers

  468. abound

  469. towards these

  470. earthen vessels.

  471. You know,

  472. there's dangers

  473. all around.

  474. There's troubles.

  475. Those are things

  476. that are going to happen.

  477. The pressures of life

  478. seem to close in.

  479. You know,

  480. this word troubled

  481. means crowded upon.

  482. You know,

  483. have you ever noticed

  484. that when things

  485. get chaotic in life

  486. and trouble comes,

  487. it's not just one thing?

  488. You know,

  489. I think we can all

  490. testify very clearly

  491. that when trouble comes,

  492. it seems like

  493. trouble comes

  494. and trouble comes

  495. and trouble comes

  496. and it seems like

  497. the whole world's

  498. pressing in on you.

  499. Everything going around you

  500. is pressing in.

  501. That's what that word

  502. troubled means,

  503. means pressed.

  504. Means overwhelmed,

  505. like it's just a,

  506. somebody opened

  507. the floodgate

  508. of problems

  509. in your life.

  510. You know,

  511. often that's exactly

  512. what takes place.

  513. Things overwhelm us.

  514. But notice the other thing

  515. he talks about

  516. is perplexed.

  517. He says,

  518. troubled,

  519. you're feeling pressured

  520. and now perplexed.

  521. What's perplexed mean?

  522. Perplexed is often

  523. the result of trouble.

  524. Perplexed is simply this.

  525. It's saying,

  526. I don't know what to do.

  527. I'm at a loss.

  528. I don't know how to deal

  529. with the situation.

  530. Troubled is pressed in.

  531. Perplexed says,

  532. this is overwhelming

  533. and I don't know

  534. what to do.

  535. You know,

  536. that sounds pretty bad,

  537. doesn't it?

  538. But notice how

  539. he contrasts this.

  540. A very simple thing.

  541. He says,

  542. troubled.

  543. Notice what he says.

  544. We are troubled

  545. on every side.

  546. Now notice he says,

  547. yet not,

  548. what?

  549. Distressed.

  550. Not distressed.

  551. He says,

  552. everything is pressing in

  553. and what's he reminding us of?

  554. He's telling us this,

  555. the power that lies within you

  556. is going to provide something

  557. for the situation.

  558. Not distressed

  559. means that God provides

  560. a way through.

  561. God is the one

  562. who makes a pathway,

  563. clears an area,

  564. clears a thing

  565. so we can have a direction

  566. of how do we walk through

  567. when life is overwhelming us,

  568. crowded upon,

  569. all these things happening

  570. and God says,

  571. hey,

  572. you're not hemmed in.

  573. You might think you are

  574. but what's within you

  575. is powerful enough

  576. to overcome

  577. what's without you.

  578. He says,

  579. you're troubled

  580. but not distressed.

  581. That God gives us

  582. a way through.

  583. You know,

  584. throughout the scripture

  585. you'll find that God tells us

  586. to seek his way

  587. because God's the one

  588. that's going to walk us

  589. through those things.

  590. But notice,

  591. perplexed,

  592. at a loss.

  593. You know,

  594. you're not hemmed in

  595. and you're also not in despair.

  596. What's not in despair mean?

  597. It means that you still have hope.

  598. You know,

  599. as a believer,

  600. no matter what happens in life,

  601. there's hope.

  602. There's not hope in this world

  603. but there's hope

  604. in the glorious gospel

  605. of Jesus Christ,

  606. the power of God

  607. that worketh in you.

  608. God gives us a hope

  609. because we realize

  610. that what happens

  611. in this world

  612. is not all that there is.

  613. We realize

  614. that situations

  615. of this life

  616. know how discouraging,

  617. how troublesome,

  618. how overwhelming

  619. that God says,

  620. I'll be there.

  621. I'm there with you.

  622. You know,

  623. it's interesting

  624. that people today,

  625. you know,

  626. you hear a lot about

  627. this health and wealth preaching.

  628. You know what?

  629. Paul is never

  630. a health and wealth preacher.

  631. You know?

  632. Matter of fact,

  633. he's probably,

  634. to most people's minds,

  635. Paul was discouraging

  636. just as much as Jesus.

  637. When you think about

  638. Jesus' message

  639. is often counter

  640. to the health

  641. and wellness

  642. and all this dynamic

  643. that they try.

  644. Just trust Jesus.

  645. Everything's going to go great.

  646. You know,

  647. think about what Jesus said

  648. in John chapter 16.

    John 16 chapter mention

  649. John chapter 16

    John 16 chapter mention

  650. and verse 33

  651. when he's talking

  652. to his disciples

  653. when he goes,

  654. these things

  655. have spoken unto you

  656. that ye might have peace.

  657. Now notice this.

  658. He says,

  659. in the world

  660. ye shall have

  661. what?

  662. You shall have.

  663. You know,

  664. I want you to realize

  665. that Jesus knows

  666. that this world's

  667. going to have problems.

  668. He knows about

  669. your problems.

  670. He says,

  671. there's going to be

  672. problems.

  673. You're going to have

  674. tribulation.

  675. But notice what he says,

  676. be of good cheer.

  677. I have overcome

  678. the world.

  679. He has overcome.

  680. He is the one

  681. no matter what's happening

  682. when we feel

  683. pressed in

  684. and we feel like

  685. we don't know

  686. what to do,

  687. we're at a loss.

  688. I want you to understand

  689. the Spirit of God

  690. reminds us

  691. that you know

  692. you're not hemmed in.

  693. It might seem like

  694. there's no way out,

  695. but you know what?

  696. God's provided a way out.

  697. You know,

  698. think about a picture

  699. within Scripture

  700. that gives us

  701. a good description.

  702. Remember the children

  703. of Israel in Exodus

  704. when they're departing Egypt?

  705. God brings them down

  706. next to the Red Sea.

  707. They're hemmed in.

  708. They cannot escape.

  709. They see no way out.

  710. The Egyptian army

  711. is bearing down on them.

  712. They're hemmed in.

  713. They're troubled.

  714. They're perplexed.

  715. They're like,

  716. what are we going to do?

  717. There is no way out

  718. but God.

  719. God steps in.

  720. You know,

  721. God gives us

  722. literal pictures

  723. of Him stepping in

  724. to make the difference.

  725. Stepping in

  726. to overcome

  727. what the world

  728. looked at

  729. and said

  730. there is no way

  731. to overcome that.

  732. God

  733. stepped in.

  734. We all know

  735. the story

  736. of what happened

  737. as Moses

  738. there

  739. goes down

  740. to the Red Sea

  741. and they all

  742. cross over safely

  743. and God destroys

  744. the very thing

  745. that was troubling them.

  746. He wasn't capable

  747. of themselves

  748. but God

  749. was capable.

  750. when they realize

  751. and see

  752. what God

  753. has done

  754. that He

  755. was there

  756. throughout everything

  757. and the unity

  758. of having that

  759. same Spirit

  760. dwelling within

  761. us

  762. ought to unite us

  763. and strengthen us

  764. allow us to face

  765. difficulties together

  766. to persevere

  767. by faith

  768. because you know

  769. the reality is this

  770. even as a couple

  771. when we recognize

  772. the other party

  773. your spouse

  774. is nothing

  775. but an earthen vessel

  776. but when moments

  777. of trouble

  778. come in a relationship

  779. you know what

  780. ought to happen

  781. it ought to draw us

  782. closer to see

  783. how God is working

  784. in the life

  785. of broken people

  786. because the problem

  787. is until we come

  788. to that point

  789. we're going to see

  790. here in just a minute

  791. until you come

  792. to the point

  793. of realizing

  794. that there's some

  795. things in your life

  796. that need to be

  797. broken for God

  798. to use you

  799. because otherwise

  800. it's of yourself

  801. and not of God

  802. when we see

  803. this picture

  804. throughout the

  805. Scripture

  806. we can understand

  807. that dynamic

  808. of a common faith

  809. you know

  810. what binds us

  811. together

  812. is that common faith

  813. what binds

  814. a married couple

  815. together

  816. ought to be

  817. a common faith

  818. a commonality

  819. with the Lord

  820. it brings

  821. together

  822. you know

  823. think about

  824. what a common

  825. faith does

  826. I mean

  827. you think about

  828. Ruth and Naomi

  829. here

  830. and Ruth

  831. you know

  832. you realize

  833. that here's a bond

  834. between a mother-in-law

  835. and a daughter-in-law

  836. that I don't know

  837. if anybody would say

  838. they didn't have

  839. some troubles

  840. they were desperate

  841. they needed help

  842. and Ruth chapter 1

    Ruth 1:16

  843. verse 16

  844. tells us this

  845. and Ruth said

  846. entreat me not

  847. to leave thee

  848. or to return

  849. from following after thee

  850. for whither thou

  851. now goest

  852. I will go

  853. and whither thou lodgest

  854. I will lodge

  855. thy people will be

  856. my people

  857. and thy God

  858. my God

  859. you know

  860. what bound them together

  861. their faith in God

  862. they say

  863. we're in trouble

  864. but you know

  865. what God's going

  866. to provide a way through

  867. you know

  868. what the picture

  869. in the book of Ruth

  870. is God providing

  871. a way through

  872. God providing

  873. a redeemer

  874. God providing

  875. to take care

  876. even though

  877. they had a midst

  878. of struggles

  879. and trials

  880. and things

  881. that seemed

  882. overwhelming

  883. you know

  884. often times

  885. like when we read

  886. Old Testament stories

  887. the accounts

  888. of the believers

  889. in the Old Testament

  890. we

  891. often times

  892. we mistakenly

  893. leave out

  894. because we see

  895. the problem

  896. and we see

  897. it resolved

  898. and we think

  899. it's like boom

  900. it's all taken care of

  901. you know what

  902. there's a lot of times

  903. when you start

  904. considering time

  905. there's a long time

  906. struggle between

  907. when the trouble began

  908. to when the problem

  909. was resolved

  910. or that God

  911. led them through

  912. or dealt with

  913. allowed them to walk

  914. through the circumstances

  915. you know

  916. how do we do that

  917. the fact is

  918. that trusting God's

  919. word is essential

  920. when it comes time

  921. when we're

  922. brokenness

  923. of this earthen vessel

  924. as God shines through

  925. we need to trust

  926. his word

  927. you know

  928. to say

  929. God

  930. I know what you say

  931. and I need to respond

  932. to what you say

  933. and that involves

  934. the second thing

  935. and that's following

  936. God's will

  937. you know

  938. because often times

  939. our will

  940. and our way

  941. is totally different

  942. than God's will

  943. and his way

  944. there's a lot of troubles

  945. I wish I could have avoided

  946. you know

  947. if it was our choice

  948. we would have said

  949. God

  950. not me

  951. but the reality is

  952. we don't have a choice

  953. troubles are going to come

  954. troubles are going to be a part

  955. are you going to trust

  956. God's word

  957. what does God

  958. have to say about it

  959. what's God's will

  960. for my life

  961. and this

  962. God

  963. what's your way

  964. through

  965. this situation

  966. because that's what's going to turn

  967. obstacles

  968. into opportunities

  969. to say

  970. God

  971. how are you working

  972. because remember

  973. when a vessel is broken

  974. what's within

  975. is revealed

  976. you know

  977. when the power of God

  978. is revealed

  979. miraculous things happen

  980. powerful things happen

  981. when God is revealed

  982. through us

  983. I want you to see here

  984. that trusting God's faithfulness

  985. through the struggle

  986. take a look at verse 9

  987. here this morning

  988. notice what he says here

  989. he says

  990. persecuted

  991. but not forsaken

  992. cast down

  993. but not destroyed

  994. I want you to understand

  995. that we can trust

  996. the one

  997. that has promised

  998. to never leave you

  999. or forsake you

  1000. persecution

  1001. the term here

  1002. what they're talking about

1003. is to be driven away

1004. that people are going to

  1005. drive you out

1006. this is the same picture

  1007. we see

  1008. in the early church

  1009. at Jerusalem

  1010. what happened

1011. it says there was a great

  1012. persecution

  1013. what happened

  1014. it dispersed

  1015. them

  1016. it drove

  1017. them out

  1018. you know

  1019. sometimes

  1020. we stop to consider

  1021. they left everything

  1022. their homes

  1023. all the things

  1024. that they had

  1025. their means of income

1026. and all sorts of stuff

  1027. because of persecution

  1028. God allowed persecution

1029. to come in their life

  1030. and we see here

  1031. it drove them away

  1032. but the Lord

  1033. didn't forsake them

  1034. we see God

  1035. using that

  1036. to do great things

  1037. they're not

  1038. forsaken

  1039. literally

  1040. we're not

  1041. left to ourselves

  1042. that's what that word

  1043. forsaken means

  1044. it means you're not

  1045. left to yourself

  1046. you're not left alone

  1047. that God is there

  1048. even in those

  1049. trying and struggling

  1050. times

  1051. no matter what

  1052. the circumstances

  1053. even in the worst

  1054. of things

  1055. you can imagine

  1056. God is still

  1057. there

  1058. you know

1059. as Paul was writing this

1060. I want you to understand

  1061. he wasn't writing from

  1062. well

  1063. my life's been good

1064. but yours is going to be

  1065. a problem

1066. you know what Paul's saying

  1067. hey

  1068. I've walked this road

  1069. I've seen

  1070. God

  1071. work

  1072. I've seen

  1073. what's happened

  1074. look over to Romans

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  1075. chapter 8

  1076. for a moment

  1077. Romans chapter 8

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  1078. and verse 38

  1079. in context of this

  1080. think about what

  1081. Paul says here

  1082. he says

  1083. for I am what

  1084. I'm what

  1085. how does somebody

  1086. become persuaded

  1087. is persuaded

  1088. just an intellectual

  1089. conquest

  1090. persuaded

  1091. has an implication

  1092. to say

  1093. I might know it

  1094. intellectually

  1095. but I've

  1096. experienced

  1097. I've seen

  1098. I've witnessed

  1099. these things

  1100. it's not an abstract

  1101. he says

  1102. it's something

1103. that let me tell you

  1104. he says

  1105. I am persuaded

  1106. that neither death

  1107. nor life

  1108. nor angels

  1109. nor principalities

  1110. nor powers

  1111. nor things present

  1112. nor things to come

  1113. nor height

  1114. nor depth

  1115. nor any other creature

  1116. shall be what

  1117. able to separate us

1118. from the love of God

1119. which is in Christ Jesus

  1120. our Lord

1121. you know what Paul said

  1122. he said

1123. hey let me tell you

  1124. every time God

  1125. broke me

  1126. the troubles

  1127. and struggles of life

  1128. broke me

  1129. you know what

  1130. God never left me

  1131. God shined through

  1132. the problem

  1133. God was there

  1134. to walk me

  1135. through the situation

  1136. to show forth

  1137. what was needed

  1138. because notice

  1139. that next phrase

  1140. cast down

  1141. cast down

  1142. this word

  1143. literally means

  1144. to be thrown

  1145. down

1146. now let me ask you

  1147. a question

1148. if you had a clay pot

  1149. up here this morning

1150. and I threw it down

  1151. what's going to happen

  1152. to it

1153. it's going to break open

  1154. he said

  1155. cast down

  1156. literally throwing down

  1157. this earthen vessel

1158. is going to be broken

1159. I want you to understand

  1160. sometimes there's things

1161. in life that are going

  1162. to break you

  1163. there's things

1164. that are going to seem

  1165. so overwhelming

1166. but I want you to understand

  1167. it's not the end

  1168. we are not destroyed

  1169. in those moments

  1170. because notice

  1171. he says

  1172. not destroyed

1173. this is quite a contrast

  1174. he says

  1175. an earthen vessel

  1176. that's broken down

  1177. and destroyed

1178. so somebody cast it down

  1179. he said

  1180. but not destroyed

1181. those are two opposite things

  1182. God says

1183. life might cast you down

  1184. but he says

  1185. I'm the one

  1186. that's still there

  1187. to keep things together

  1188. I'm the one

1189. that's going to be there

  1190. to overcome

  1191. this word

  1192. not destroyed

  1193. literally means

  1194. will not perish

  1195. you know what

  1196. if you're saved

1197. what's the Bible tell us

1198. that you're not going to

  1199. perish

  1200. God says

1201. that if you're his child

  1202. you are secure

  1203. you're sealed

  1204. no matter what happens

  1205. in life

  1206. no matter what

  1207. the challenges

1208. of this life may be

  1209. it's in those moments

  1210. that we see

  1211. the light

  1212. that is within

  1213. every believer

  1214. the power of God

1215. the presence of his spirit

  1216. in our lives

1217. when the vessel is broken

  1218. it always reveals

  1219. the contents

  1220. in marriage

  1221. in family

  1222. in life

1223. when we trust the Lord

  1224. knowing he is faithful

1225. in the midst of trials

  1226. and tribulations

  1227. that's what's within

  1228. will always sustain

  1229. and keep you

  1230. because when life

  1231. appears to be

  1232. falling apart

  1233. is when we must

  1234. encourage one another

  1235. to hold on

  1236. to the hope

  1237. that is within us

  1238. you know think about

  1239. the prophet Isaiah

1240. look over Isaiah chapter 40

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  1241. here's Isaiah the prophet

  1242. speaking here

1243. in a time of great

  1244. trial and struggle

  1245. he says this

  1246. hast thou not known

  1247. hast thou not heard

  1248. that the everlasting God

  1249. the Lord

  1250. the creator

1251. of the ends of the earth

  1252. fainted not

  1253. neither is weary

  1254. you know what

1255. when life is upside down

1256. and life is breaking us

1257. I want you to understand

1258. God is still the same

  1259. he says he hasn't

  1260. gotten tired

1261. he hasn't forgot about you

  1262. he's not weary

  1263. but it says this

  1264. there is no searching

  1265. of his understanding

  1266. he giveth power

  1267. to the faint

  1268. and to them

  1269. that have no might

  1270. he increases strength

1271. you know what God says

  1272. he's saying

  1273. we're cast down

  1274. but not destroyed

  1275. he says

1276. when life is coming apart

  1277. he says

  1278. I'm there

1279. I'm what can keep life together

1280. I'm the one that overcomes

  1281. to increase

  1282. the strength

  1283. for the need

  1284. even the

  1285. notice in verse 30

  1286. even the youth

  1287. shall faint

  1288. and be weary

  1289. and the young men

  1290. shall utterly fail

  1291. but they that wait

  1292. upon the Lord

  1293. shall what

  1294. renew their

  1295. strength

  1296. and they shall

  1297. mount up with wings

  1298. as eagles

  1299. they shall run

  1300. and not be weary

  1301. they shall walk

  1302. and not faint

1303. I want you to understand

  1304. there's hope

  1305. even when life

  1306. breaks us

  1307. there's hope

  1308. God allows

  1309. this earthen vessel

  1310. to be broken

  1311. that his glory

  1312. might shine

  1313. through

  1314. look at verse 10

  1315. for a moment

  1316. always bearing

  1317. about in the body

  1318. the dying

  1319. of the Lord Jesus

  1320. that the life

  1321. also of Jesus

  1322. might be made

  1323. manifest

  1324. in our body

  1325. you ever ask yourself

  1326. why does God

  1327. allow us

  1328. to be broken

  1329. very simply

  1330. is that his power

  1331. might shine forth

  1332. in our life

  1333. the power

  1334. of who he is

  1335. and the reality

  1336. of even dying

  1337. to ourself

  1338. it says

  1339. always bearing

  1340. about in the body

  1341. the dying

  1342. of the Lord Jesus

  1343. you know today

  1344. the problem is

  1345. often times

  1346. we want to protect

  1347. everything around us

  1348. we want to try

  1349. to control

  1350. everything around us

  1351. and God says

  1352. I'm going to allow

  1353. some things to happen

1354. and some of those things

1355. are even going to break you

1356. but I'm going to break you

  1357. for a purpose

1358. I'm going to break you

  1359. with reason behind it

  1360. and you say

  1361. well I don't want

  1362. to be broken

  1363. take a look

  1364. at what Jesus says

1365. look over to Luke chapter 9

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  1366. for a moment

  1367. Luke chapter 9

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  1368. Jesus looked at his

  1369. disciples

  1370. and he said this

  1371. he says

  1372. if any man

  1373. come after me

  1374. let him what

  1375. deny

  1376. himself

1377. and take up his cross

  1378. daily

  1379. and follow me

  1380. you know

  1381. often times

1382. when we hear that word cross

  1383. we've been misled

  1384. to think it's a burden

1385. the cross is not a burden

1386. the cross is a place

  1387. of death

  1388. he says

  1389. if you're not willing

  1390. to die to yourself

1391. if you're going to follow Jesus

1392. you have to be willing

  1393. to die to yourself

  1394. to say

  1395. Lord my hand

  1396. who I am

  1397. is in your hands

1398. to take up the cross

  1399. daily

  1400. and follow

  1401. me

1402. now think back to verse 10

  1403. always

  1404. bearing about

  1405. in the body

  1406. the dying

  1407. of the Lord Jesus

  1408. what's the purpose

  1409. behind this

1410. we're going to follow him

  1411. what

  1412. that the life

  1413. also of Jesus

  1414. might be made

  1415. manifest

  1416. in our body

1417. I want you to understand

  1418. that when we're broken

  1419. Jesus shines forth

1420. not only in your life

  1421. but it shines forth

  1422. to others

  1423. because how we respond

  1424. in those moments

  1425. make a difference

  1426. how we walk through

  1427. the trials

  1428. and struggles

  1429. of life

  1430. when we understand

1431. we must rely upon him

  1432. and work together

  1433. in faith

  1434. and unity

  1435. in the struggles

  1436. when life breaks you

  1437. what shines through

  1438. is the light

  1439. of the knowledge

1440. of the glory of God

  1441. if you're a believer

  1442. that's what's to shine through

  1443. because it's either

  1444. going to reveal

  1445. the glory of God

  1446. that's within you

1447. or it's going to reveal

  1448. brokenness

  1449. without hope

  1450. as a believer

  1451. we have hope

  1452. what it reveals

  1453. in you

  1454. when you face

  1455. life challenges

  1456. what is revealed

  1457. it will be that

  1458. what is within

  1459. is it the light

  1460. and hope

  1461. of Christ

  1462. or is the hopeless

  1463. lost and lonely

  1464. life without Christ

  1465. today

1466. you have to be sure

  1467. that you know

  1468. who Jesus is

  1469. that you know

  1470. what he's done

  1471. for you

  1472. to realize

  1473. the necessity

  1474. of calling upon him

  1475. as savior

  1476. that you might

  1477. understand

  1478. the power of God

  1479. unto salvation

  1480. for all those

  1481. that have believed

  1482. upon the name

  1483. of the one

  1484. that came

  1485. and died

  1486. for you

  1487. you know

  1488. this morning

  1489. troubles are going

  1490. to break us

  1491. life's going to be

  1492. filled with troubles

  1493. but the question is

1494. are you going to rely

  1495. upon God's

  1496. word

  1497. his will

  1498. and his way

  1499. that it might

  1500. shine through

  1501. when the trials

  1502. and struggles

  1503. and challenges

  1504. of life

  1505. happen

  1506. what shines

  1507. through

  1508. when life

  1509. breaks you

  1510. as heads are

  1511. bowed

  1512. and eyes are

  1513. closed

  1514. this morning

  1515. what about you

  1516. today

  1517. is there a need

  1518. in your life

  1519. in your heart

  1520. maybe God's been

  1521. working in your life

  1522. in a way

  1523. that you're like

  1524. I don't

  1525. like it

  1526. this is

  1527. hard

  1528. this is

  1529. difficult

  1530. but you know

  1531. what God

  1532. wants you

  1533. be able to shine

  1534. through

  1535. what's within

  1536. the reality

  1537. of the power

  1538. of the gospel

  1539. of Jesus Christ

  1540. that transforms

  1541. lives

  1542. heavenly fathers

  1543. we come before you

  1544. this morning

  1545. Lord we just

  1546. thank you

  1547. and praise you

  1548. for the day

  1549. Lord we're thankful

  1550. for that you'll

  1551. never leave us

  1552. you'll never forsake

  1553. us Lord

  1554. in the most

  1555. down moments

  1556. that you're

  1557. always there

  1558. Lord when we

  1559. feel life

  1560. pressing in

  1561. that Lord

  1562. you've

  1563. already

  1564. provided

  1565. what's needed

  1566. you've not

  1567. forsaken

  1568. or denied

  1569. us

  1570. Lord even

  1571. when we

  1572. think life

  1573. is broken

  1574. we're not

  1575. destroyed

  1576. because of

  1577. you

  1578. Lord you

  1579. know each

  1580. heart

  1581. each life

  1582. here today

  1583. Lord you

  1584. know the

  1585. trials

  1586. and struggles

  1587. of life

  1588. you know

  1589. the condition

  1590. of each

  1591. one before

  1592. you today

  1593. whether they

  1594. truly had

  1595. that time

  1596. and moment

  1597. when they've

  1598. called upon

  1599. you as

  1600. Savior

  1601. Lord that

  1602. your spirit

  1603. bears witness

  1604. with their

  1605. spirit

  1606. Lord I pray

  1607. it's just

  1608. work in a

  1609. mighty way

  1610. even here

  1611. this morning

  1612. Lord that

  1613. we might

  1614. just turn

  1615. to you

  1616. knowing that

  1617. even in the

  1618. moments that

  1619. this earthen

  1620. vessel is

  1621. broken Lord

  1622. that you're

  1623. going to

  1624. shine

  1625. through in

  1626. a mighty

  1627. way

  1628. and Lord

  1629. we just

  1630. ask it all

  1631. in your

  1632. precious name

  1633. as piano

  1634. plays what

  1635. about you

  1636. today

  1637. is there

  1638. some things

  1639. you need

  1640. to spend

  1641. some time

  1642. with the

  1643. Lord
