  1. Daniel chapter 3 this morning, please. Daniel chapter 3. While you're turning there, thank you so much.

Daniel 3 chapter mention Daniel 3 chapter mention

  2. ! I want to thank Pastor for allowing me to be here this morning. I want to thank you for showing up, even though you knew I'd be here.

  3. It is a joy to be back here again, and a joy to see so many familiar faces, and a joy to see faces I don't recognize.

  4. So, if you don't know me yet, count your blessings, and come up after service and introduce yourself.

  5. If I don't search you out, and I'd like to make some new friends, it's always good to make new friends.

  6. Always good. We are back here living in Lincoln. We moved back from eastern Iowa, just south of the University of Iowa,

  7. Boo Hawkeyes, to out here, back to Lincoln this last May, and it's kind of different.

  8. I mean, where it used to be a six-hour drive to come over and preach here, we now can make it in about five minutes.

  9. This is nice. And there's a Scooters along the way.

  10. Did you know you can get coffee at Scooters today? Anyway.

  11. And yes, we stopped at the Scooters on normal on the way here today, and so I am very, very caffeinated.

  12. So, I asked Brother Matt when I should be shooting to be done. He said 1025.

  13. I'm not sure, having this much caffeine in me, if the message will make it that long or not.

  14. Oh, it will. Yeah.

  15. Nevertheless, it is good to be here. Thank you so much for being in the house of the Lord this morning.

  16. If you found your place in Daniel chapter 3, and I certainly should have given you enough time by going on like that,

    Daniel 3 chapter mention

  17. would you stand with me, please, for the reading of God's Word this morning?

  18. I'm going to read just a few verses throughout the chapter.

  19. We're going to read Daniel chapter 3, verse number 1.

    Daniel 3 chapter mention

  20. The Bible says,

  21. Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold, whose height was three score cubits, and the breadth thereof six cubits.

  22. He set it up in the plain of Dura in the province of Babylon.

  23. Now drop down to verse number 4.

  24. Now drop down to verse number 12.

  25. There are certain Jews whom thou hast set over the affairs of the province of Babylon.

  26. This is men speaking to King Nebuchadnezzar and tattling, if you will, on other people.

  27. Set over the province of Babylon, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

  28. These men, O king, have not regarded thee.

  29. They serve not thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.

  30. Then Nebuchadnezzar, in his rage and fury, commanded to bring Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

  31. Then they brought these men before the king.

  32. Verse number 16.

  33. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered after the king was enraged at them and accused them,

  34. answered and said to the king,

  35. O Nebuchadnezzar, we are not careful to answer thee in this matter.

  36. If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace,

  37. and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king.

  38. But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods,

  39. nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.

  40. We're going to pray.

  41. And after we pray, I'm going to bring a few thoughts on standing.

  42. Standing.

  43. Let's pray together.

  44. Father, we thank you so much for the beautiful, beautiful morning that you've given us.

  45. Lord, we thank you for the fellowship that we enjoy when we come to church with each other,

  46. the time that we can chat, the time that we can strengthen each other.

  47. Lord, we thank you for the song service and how we can join together and lift up our voices to you in praise.

  48. Now, Lord, I pray that you would bless the preaching of your word.

  49. Lord, Holy Spirit, that you would fill me, that you would guide my mind, that you would control my words,

  50. that I would say only those things that are said according to your will and in your power.

  51. I pray that you would move amongst the seats here this morning, that you would speak to people's hearts,

  52. that they would hear beyond my voice, to hear your still small voice speaking to their hearts.

  53. Lord, I pray that you would convict us, that you would encourage us,

  54. that you would strengthen us in you this morning.

  55. Father, we pray especially if there's anyone here who does not know you as their personal Savior,

  56. that today would be the day that they know the joy of sins forgiven.

  57. We pray these things in Jesus' name.

  58. Amen.

  59. You may be seated.

  60. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were in a bad situation.

  61. You've got to remember the context of what's going on here.

  62. We're used to living in a society where if we don't agree with something,

  63. we have options to go and to make protests.

  64. We have options to go and speak our minds at places.

  65. We have options to vote and change the people that we have elected to serve us.

  66. Because that's truly the way our government is set up.

  67. Our government is not set up to rule over us.

  68. Our government is set up.

  69. We elect people to go to represent us,

  70. and the government is actually supposed to serve us.

  71. Now, your opinions on how that may or may not be working

  72. is not necessarily applicable

  73. because that's the way it's supposed to be set up for us.

  74. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego did not have that kind of situation.

  75. They were living under an absolute monarchy.

  76. Nebuchadnezzar was the supreme ruler,

  77. and he was set up so that whatever he said happened.

  78. There was no appeal.

  79. There was no court of going back and trying again.

  80. There was no right to speak your mind

  81. or to seek redress somewhere else.

  82. Whatever he said happened.

  83. In our story, he had set up a huge golden image,

  84. and he had commanded that worship was to be made toward that image

  85. as if it were worship to him and of him.

  86. In many of the pagan cultures that we read about in the Bible,

  87. the supreme rulers were considered as gods.

  88. This was true in Egypt.

  89. This was true in Babylon.

  90. This was true in Assyria.

  91. The people that were in charge,

  92. the absolute emperor and king,

  93. was not only considered a ruler,

  94. and he was an absolute ruler,

  95. and often a tyrant,

  96. and often very, very cruel,

  97. but he was also considered a god,

  98. and worship was made to that ruler.

  99. Well, this put Shadrach,

  100. these three Hebrews,

  101. into a very delicate position

  102. because they were in exile.

  103. You've got to remember,

  104. Babylon had come in,

  105. they had conquered,

  106. they had taken spoil,

  107. they had taken prisoners,

  108. and they had hauled them off to Babylon.

  109. Babylon.

  110. These were three young men

  111. who found themselves isolated in a foreign land.

  112. They were surrounded,

  113. not by familiar scenes,

  114. not by familiar places,

  115. not by familiar people,

  116. but they were surrounded

  117. by things entirely strange and different.

  118. They were surrounded by people

  119. of a different language.

  120. They were surrounded by people

  121. of different society.

  122. They were surrounded by sights and sounds

  123. and landscapes with which

  124. they were not familiar.

  125. And they were surrounded by people

  126. of a different religion.

  127. They found themselves very isolated.

  128. Now, they were not the only ones

  129. taken from Judah and from Israel

  130. into this captivity.

  131. Nevertheless, the number in comparison

  132. to the number of people living in Babylon,

  133. the number of those in exile,

  134. was very, very small.

  135. Babylon was a very, very large city.

  136. So you can imagine

  137. that they felt quite intimidated.

  138. You can imagine they felt

  139. very out of place,

  140. much a fish out of water.

  141. And you can imagine

  142. that the temptation

  143. was very, very strong

  144. to just go along to get along.

  145. Keep your head down.

  146. Don't make waves.

  147. Don't make trouble.

  148. Just keep quiet.

  149. Fly under the radar, as it were.

  150. But that's not the kind of thing

  151. that Shadrach and Meshach

  152. and Abednego were made out of.

  153. That was not their character.

  154. They were faced here

  155. with this tremendous decision

  156. because the decree had come down

  157. from Nebuchadnezzar.

  158. And to disobey was a sentence of death

  159. that you would be thrown

  160. into a burning, fiery furnace.

  161. And this was no metaphor.

  162. This was no illustration.

  163. This was no,

  164. well, it might happen

  165. after you make 14 different appeals

  166. in the courts.

  167. As we're familiar with the story,

  168. we know that this was something

  169. that was an immediate thing.

  170. You disobeyed.

  171. You died.

  172. So in the midst

  173. of being out of place,

  174. in the midst

  175. of being terribly intimidated,

  176. in the midst

  177. of being threatened

  178. in their very lives,

  179. we find that Shadrach,

  180. Meshach, and Abednego

  181. when faced with a crisis point,

  182. and oh so often

  183. when we're reading

  184. these stories in the Bible,

  185. we are reading about people

  186. who come to a crisis point

  187. in their lives.

  188. And sometimes multiple crisis points.

  189. Because that's the way life is,

  190. isn't it?

  191. You're living your life.

  192. You're going about your business.

  193. You're doing things

  194. you've normally done.

  195. And all of a sudden,

  196. sometimes we see it coming

  197. and sometimes it's upon us

  198. with no warning at all.

  199. All of a sudden,

  200. there is a crisis point

  201. in our lives.

  202. And we have to make a decision

  203. just like Shadrach, Meshach,

  204. and Abednego

  205. had to make a decision.

  206. We have to make a decision.

  207. How am I going to respond to this?

  208. What is my decision going to be

  209. when I am faced

  210. with this crisis point

  211. in my life?

  212. And when we look at

  213. Shadrach, Meshach,

  214. and Abednego,

  215. we find that they chose

  216. to stand.

  217. They chose to be different.

  218. They chose not to go along

  219. with the crowd,

  220. not to go along

  221. with their society,

  222. not to go along

  223. with what would be

  224. the obvious pressure

  225. and intense pressure

  226. upon them.

  227. But Shadrach,

  228. Meshach,

  229. and Abednego

  230. chose to stand.

  231. Say,

  232. why would they do

  233. something like that?

  234. The first thing I want you

  235. to notice is that

  236. standing is commanded.

  237. Standing is commanded.

  238. You see,

  239. there was a problem

  240. with these three

  241. young Hebrews.

  242. What Nebuchadnezzar

  243. was telling them to do

  244. was in direct opposition

  245. to what their God

  246. had told them to do.

  247. It was not something

  248. that they could just gloss over,

  249. they could pass by,

  250. but rather it was something

  251. that was in direct violation

  252. of what they had been taught,

  253. the way they had been brought up,

  254. and what God had revealed

  255. to His chosen people.

  256. In Exodus chapter 20,

    Exodus 20 chapter mention

  257. verse number 4,

  258. the Bible says,

  259. to the Hebrew people,

  260. to the Israelites,

  261. thou shalt not make

  262. unto thee any graven image

  263. or any likeness

  264. of anything that is

  265. in heaven above

  266. or that is in the earth beneath

  267. or that is in the water

  268. under the earth,

  269. thou shalt not bow down

  270. thyself to them

  271. nor serve them,

  272. for I, the Lord thy God,

  273. am a jealous God,

  274. visiting the iniquity

  275. of the fathers

  276. upon the children

  277. under the third

  278. and fourth generation

  279. of them that hate me.

  280. Again, in Ephesians chapter,

  281. excuse me,

  282. I started to jump ahead

  283. of myself.

  284. That's what caffeine

  285. will do to you.

  286. So these young Hebrews

  287. knew what God had commanded.

  288. They also knew

  289. what Nebuchadnezzar

  290. had commanded

  291. and the crisis point

  292. came when they had

  293. to decide,

  294. which direction do I turn?

  295. But they decided

  296. that I am going to stand

  297. for what God has told me.

  298. I am going to stand.

  299. Oh, it's as if the apostle,

  300. as the words of the apostles,

  301. it is better,

  302. we must obey God

  303. rather than man.

  304. So they stood

  305. before the king.

  306. We'll say,

  307. what that's,

  308. you know,

  309. that's Old Testament.

  310. Now,

  311. that still applies

  312. to us today.

  313. We're not to be involved

  314. in idolatry.

  315. We are not to bow down

  316. and worship other images.

  317. We are not to have anything.

  318. You thou shalt love

  319. the Lord thy God

  320. with all thy heart,

  321. with all thy soul,

  322. with all thy might.

  323. He is supposed to be

  324. first in our lives.

  325. Well, I don't have

  326. a statue in my apartment.

  327. I don't have an idol

  328. in my house.

  329. No, but some of us

  330. have idols

  331. that aren't necessarily

  332. graven images.

  333. Some of us have an idol

  334. of our career,

  335. of our job,

  336. of our income.

  337. Some of us have an idol

  338. of our leisure time,

  339. our recreation.

  340. Some of us have an idol

  341. of sports.

  342. Oh, I just got in trouble,

  343. right?

  344. Some of us have an idol

  345. of our car,

  346. believe it or not.

  347. I've known people

  348. who would not serve God

  349. because they had to take

  350. care of their car.

  351. Their possessions

  352. drove them.

  353. Their off time

  354. drove them.

  355. Their career

  356. drove them.

  357. And, friend,

  358. whatever we put

  359. before God

  360. in our life

  361. becomes an idol.

  362. Our relationship,

  363. our family,

  364. believe it or not,

  365. our relationship

  366. and our family,

  367. while very, very important

  368. and while something

  369. that God tells us

  370. we should treasure

  371. and God shows us

  372. how we should live,

  373. if we start putting

  374. our relationships

  375. and our families

  376. above God,

  377. our families

  378. just became an idol.

  379. We have to make sure

  380. that we're serving God first

  381. and that we're doing

  382. what God wants us to do

  383. in dealing with

  384. everything else

  385. in our lives.

  386. So we may not have

  387. the same graven image

  388. that they had

  389. to bow down to,

  390. but we do have

  391. the danger

  392. that we could

  393. make ourselves

  394. an idol.

  395. We could decide

  396. just like them

  397. that when we're faced

  398. with a crisis point

  399. just like them,

  400. we could make

  401. an opposite decision.

  402. We could decide

  403. that I'm not going

  404. to stand for God.

  405. I'm not going to do

  406. what God wants me to do.

  407. The world out there

  408. would like us

  409. to live a certain way.

  410. Society out there

  411. would like us

  412. to do exactly

  413. what they do.

  414. They would like us

  415. to fit in,

  416. to blend in,

  417. to go along

  418. with the crowd,

  419. to bend our opinions

  420. and our thoughts

  421. and our actions

  422. to the way society is

  423. and if we disagree,

  424. to keep our mouths shut.

  425. They would like that.

  426. And so we're faced

  427. with that crisis point.

  428. Are we going

  429. to just go along

  430. to get along?

  431. Are we going to bow

  432. to Nebuchadnezzar's idol?

  433. Or are we going

  434. to stand for God?

  435. Because standing

  436. is commanded to us

  437. just as much

  438. as it was commanded

  439. to them.

  440. In Ephesians chapter 6,

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  441. the Bible says,

  442. Wherefore,

  443. take unto you

  444. the whole armor of God

  445. that ye may be able

  446. to withstand

  447. in the evil day

  448. and having done all

  449. to stand.

  450. 1 Corinthians chapter 15,

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  451. verse number 58,

  452. Therefore,

  453. my beloved brethren,

  454. be ye steadfast,

  455. unmovable,

  456. always abounding

  457. in the work of the Lord,

  458. for as much as you know

  459. that your labor

  460. is not in vain

  461. in the Lord.

  462. So we are faced

  463. with the same problem,

  464. the same crisis point,

  465. and we are faced

  466. with this multiple times.

  467. I mean,

  468. a person only has

  469. to turn on the news.

  470. A person only has

  471. to check out social media

  472. to find out.

  473. A person, really,

  474. you don't even have

  475. to do that.

  476. You could just live

  477. your life and go about

  478. to find out

  479. that society just wants,

  480. is going one direction,

  481. and that direction

  482. is not God's direction.

  483. And there is

  484. a tremendous pressure

  485. upon each and every

  486. single born-again person

  487. to just shut our mouths.

  488. Keep quiet.

  489. Go along with the society.

  490. Go with the flow.

  491. Not be different.

  492. Not point anything out

  493. that's wrong.

  494. Just, again,

  495. fly under the radar.

  496. And that temptation

  497. is pretty strong.

  498. Let's face it.

  499. There are a lot of folks

  500. that we could probably

  501. talk about,

  502. we could probably think,

  503. we might even be thinking

  504. about right now,

  505. and sometimes that person

  506. may be us

  507. who was faced

  508. with a crisis point

  509. and didn't stand.

  510. Not one of us is perfect.

  511. Not one of us

  512. should look down

  513. at somebody else

  514. because all of us

  515. are faced with

  516. these crisis points,

  517. and sometimes we succeed,

  518. and sometimes we fail

  519. because we're human,

  520. and we mess up.

  521. But we should look

  522. at these three Hebrews,

  523. and it should stir our hearts

  524. that we should also

  525. want to stand

  526. as they stood

  527. in the face

  528. of a dark generation,

  529. in the face of a world

  530. that is going against God,

  531. and quite frankly,

  532. always has.

  533. We think we face new things,

  534. but the truth of the matter is

  535. it's a recycled version

  536. of everything

  537. that every Christian

  538. and born-again believer

  539. has always faced.

  540. It may be more intense.

  541. It may be using new methods

  542. and ways of going about things,

  543. but it's the same thing

  544. that everybody

  545. has always faced,

  546. always a temptation

  547. to be quiet,

  548. always a temptation

  549. to sit down,

  550. always a temptation

  551. to go along,

  552. always a temptation

  553. to cave in

  554. and compromise.

  555. Nevertheless,

  556. we are commanded

  557. to stand

  558. and to stand for God.

  559. We are commanded.

  560. Jesus looked at us

  561. as it were,

  562. looked at His disciples,

  563. said,

  564. ye are the light

  565. of the world.

  566. That's what we're

  567. supposed to be.

  568. We're supposed to shine

  569. out the love of God

  570. to a lost and dying world.

  571. And if we are shining

  572. that light,

  573. there are going to be things

  574. that are scurry away

  575. in the darkness

  576. that do not want

  577. to see that light

  578. nor appreciate that light

  579. nor go to that light.

  580. Nevertheless,

  581. we are to shine out

  582. that light.

  583. But the temptation

  584. and what we're,

  585. I don't want to say forced,

  586. but threatened to do

  587. is to put our lights

  588. under a bushel.

  589. And of course,

  590. all the kids down

  591. at Junior Church

  592. know the song,

  593. This Little Am I,

  594. I'm going to let it shine.

  595. Hide it under a bushel,

  596. No.

  597. And that's easy,

  598. it's easier to sing that

  599. when you're a kid.

  600. It's a little bit harder

  601. when you're an adult

  602. and you're dealing

  603. with neighbors

  604. and you're dealing

  605. with family

  606. and you're dealing

  607. with work

  608. and you're dealing

  609. with society in general.

  610. Nevertheless,

  611. that's what we're called

  612. to do.

  613. We are called

  614. to be the light

  615. of the world

  616. and shine Jesus' light.

  617. We are called

  618. to stand,

  619. to stand for something,

  620. not to stand up

  621. and say,

  622. this is what I am

  623. or this is what I think,

  624. but rather to stand up

  625. and say,

  626. this is what God says

  627. and here I stand.

  628. So standing is commanded,

  629. not only that,

  630. but standing is conspicuous.

  631. Standing is conspicuous.

  632. You can,

  633. when I,

  634. I don't know about you,

  635. but when I read the Bible,

  636. when I read in general,

  637. my mind works

  638. by making it almost

  639. into a little video.

  640. I see the events

  641. as I'm reading.

  642. I see the events

  643. happening in my mind.

  644. It becomes less

  645. just cold black words

  646. on a white page.

  647. It becomes more

  648. of a video in my mind

  649. and it stirs my heart sometimes

  650. and it challenges me sometimes.

  651. I can see this scene

  652. as it's set forth

  653. in the Bible.

  654. I can see this huge idol

  655. set up in the middle

  656. of a plain

  657. because that's where

  658. it said it was.

  659. It's the middle of a plain

  660. and in the Midwest,

  661. we know what plains are,

  662. don't we?

  663. I can see this huge idol

  664. set up in the middle

  665. of this huge plain.

  666. I can see thousands

  667. and thousands of people

  668. surrounding this idol

  669. and they're milling

  670. and if you've ever been

  671. in the midst

  672. of a large crowd,

  673. you understand what I mean.

  674. They're milling

  675. and they're talking

  676. and there's just this,

  677. this constant hum

  678. and buzz

  679. of conversation

  680. that you have trouble

  681. making out

  682. any particular words

  683. because there's so many people

  684. and there's so many conversations

  685. and there's so much movement

  686. that everything just blurs

  687. into one continuous hum

  688. of activity

  689. and noise

  690. and then the music

  691. starts playing.

  692. I don't know

  693. if it came from a platform

  694. next to the idol,

  695. if it came from different stations

  696. around the outside,

  697. wherever it was,

  698. the music started playing

  699. and again,

  700. if you've ever been

  701. in a crowd

  702. that's gathered together

  703. for a specific reason,

  704. before things start,

  705. there's this constant hum,

  706. there's this constant activity,

  707. this constant rustle

  708. of conversation,

  709. but as things start,

  710. that dies down.

  711. It becomes quieter

  712. and in my mind,

  713. I see that movement

  714. of that huge crowd still

  715. and I see the conversation,

  716. the hum of thousands

  717. of people talking,

  718. I hear it quiet

  719. and in my mind's eye,

  720. I see starting

  721. maybe closest to the idol

  722. or maybe closest to wherever

  723. the music was coming from,

  724. I see row after row

  725. after row of people

  726. falling to their knees,

  727. facing this idol

  728. and falling to their knees.

  729. Just perhaps a wave

  730. moving outward

  731. from the idol.

  732. Thousands of people

  733. kneeling down,

  734. except for three.

  735. Can you imagine

  736. what it looked like?

  737. everybody's knelt down,

  738. all in the surrounding area

  739. and who knows

  740. how large this plane was

  741. or how many thousands

  742. of people may have been there

  743. and in the midst

  744. of all these people

  745. kneeling down

  746. stood three figures.

  747. You can imagine

  748. that they drew

  749. a lot of attention

  750. and a lot of attention

  751. immediately.

  752. They stood out.

  753. They stood up

  754. and they stood out.

  755. There was no hiding,

  756. there was no drawing back,

  757. there was no camouflage,

  758. there was no standing

  759. in the corner

  760. and hoping nobody noticed.

  761. They were on the spot.

  762. Now the funny thing

  763. about this is,

  764. as I mentioned earlier,

  765. they were not the only people

  766. taken into captivity.

  767. They were not the only Hebrews

  768. and I doubt very much,

  769. I have no way of proving this

  770. by the Bible,

  771. just my supposition,

  772. so if you want to disagree

  773. with me,

  774. you're perfectly welcome

  775. to disagree with me.

  776. But I've got to imagine

  777. that there were other Hebrews

  778. there in that huge crowd

  779. along with them,

  780. but there were only three

  781. that stood.

  782. There were other people there

  783. that were under the same command

  784. to stand as these three,

  785. but only these three stood.

  786. In my mind's eye,

  787. again,

  788. I imagine somebody

  789. who was maybe,

  790. before the music started playing,

  791. Shadrach and Meshach and Abednego

  792. were surrounded by other Jews

  793. because we tend to congregate together,

  794. don't we?

  795. With people of like faith,

  796. with people of like backgrounds,

  797. they came from the same place,

  798. they spoke the same language.

  799. You can imagine

  800. that they would congregate together

  801. even in the midst of a crowd.

  802. And these others

  803. knelt down.

  804. And these three stood.

  805. I can imagine in my mind's eye

  806. somebody kneeling down next to them

  807. and you'll forgive me,

  808. I'm not going to kneel down

  809. because once I kneel down,

  810. I may not get back up.

  811. But I can imagine

  812. that they knelt down

  813. and they looked up

  814. and there are those three standing

  815. and say,

  816. Shadrach!

  817. Shadrach,

  818. what is the matter with you, man?

  819. Can you not see

  820. what's going on here?

  821. Get down!

  822. This is not good.

  823. You are making the rest of us look bad.

  824. Do you know

  825. that King Nebuchadnezzar,

  826. he's going to throw you in the furnace?

  827. Do you not realize this?

  828. And if he wants to

  829. just because you're standing,

  830. did you know

  831. he might throw me in there too

  832. even though I'm not standing?

  833. What is wrong with you?

  834. Can't you just get down?

  835. Okay, don't kneel down all the way.

  836. Can you at least crouch?

  837. Can you at least go halfway?

  838. Okay, you don't have to go

  839. all the way to kneeling.

  840. But can you at least,

  841. you know,

  842. maybe bend at the waist?

  843. Do something.

  844. Help me out here.

  845. And I can imagine Shadrach

  846. looking at him and saying,

  847. what are you doing down there?

  848. Why aren't you up here with me?

  849. That's not where you're supposed to be.

  850. You're supposed to be here.

  851. You're supposed to be standing next to me.

  852. You're supposed to be standing for God

  853. just like me.

  854. Can you imagine the pressure?

  855. The pressure from knowing that what they were doing

  856. carried the death penalty?

  857. The pressure of knowing that everyone was looking at them?

  858. Because there was no hiding amidst that crowd.

  859. The pressure of knowing that other people

  860. who should have been supporting them

  861. and should have been standing with them

  862. weren't.

  863. That's a tremendous amount of pressure.

  864. And yet in the middle of all that pressure,

  865. in the middle of all that

  866. intimidation,

  867. these three men

  868. stood strong.

  869. You know, I've often heard

  870. through the years that I've been saved

  871. when people are talking about this,

  872. I've often heard them talking about

  873. the three Hebrew boys

  874. or the three Hebrew children.

  875. Can I share with you that I don't care

  876. what age these people happen to be?

  877. These were men.

  878. It takes someone of character

  879. to stand in the midst of that kind of pressure.

  880. It takes someone of extreme character

  881. to stand in the midst of intimidation.

  882. It takes somebody

  883. with a fervent love for God.

  884. It is so easy to say,

  885. I love God.

  886. Stand and show me.

  887. You can kneel and say,

  888. I love God.

  889. I don't believe you.

  890. Quite frankly, the other people

  891. kneeling next to you

  892. don't believe you either.

  893. There are times

  894. where if you are going to say something,

  895. you need to do something

  896. to back it up.

  897. It's time,

  898. there are times

  899. you have to put actions

  900. to your words.

  901. You know the old saying,

  902. your talk talks

  903. and your walk talks,

  904. but your walk talks louder

  905. than your talk talks?

  906. I hope I got that right.

  907. It's an old saying,

  908. but it's true.

  909. We often think of people probably

  910. whose walk does not match their talk.

  911. I was working in a factory one time.

  912. Years ago,

  913. I worked in a factory.

  914. I worked there for 15 years

  915. and I worked with a variety

  916. of different people.

  917. And there was one woman

  918. I was working with

  919. and she was a profane woman.

  920. She was,

  921. for lack of a better word,

  922. she was vile.

  923. I'm sorry,

  924. that sounds really,

  925. really harsh,

  926. but that's a good descriptive word.

  927. She was wicked

  928. and her mouth was wicked

  929. and her actions were wicked

  930. and her opinions were wicked.

  931. And I think you get the idea.

  932. Working in a factory,

  933. you can imagine,

  934. it got pretty bad.

  935. Well, one day,

  936. the door opened up

  937. and I was able to witness to her.

  938. You got to look for your opportunities,

  939. especially when you're at work

  940. because my time is being paid for

  941. by my employer.

  942. But I saw an opportunity

  943. and I took it.

  944. So I witnessed to her

  945. and she looked at me

  946. and she said,

  947. oh yeah,

  948. I accepted Jesus Christ

  949. as my personal savior

  950. when I was a child

  951. down in,

  952. I think she said Missouri.

  953. And I will tell you the truth,

  954. she had,

  955. I'm surprised she didn't get insulted

  956. because I stood there

  957. with my mouth hanging wide open.

  958. Do you believe her?

  959. It's not my place to judge her.

  960. It's really not.

  961. But can I tell you

  962. that the way she acted

  963. and what she told me

  964. didn't match.

  965. What we say we are

  966. should be evident

  967. by what we do.

  968. People should never be shocked

  969. to find out we're a Christian.

  970. People should never be shocked

  971. to find out that we love Jesus.

  972. Everything about us,

  973. the Bible calls it

  974. our conversation.

  975. When we think of conversation,

  976. we think of what we say.

  977. The Bible,

  978. when it uses the word conversation,

  979. means the entirety of our being.

  980. Everything about us that speaks.

  981. And our actions speak,

  982. as the saying,

  983. again,

  984. saying goes,

  985. our actions speak louder than words.

  986. They should never,

  987. people should never be surprised.

  988. Our actions,

  989. what we do,

  990. should always match up

  991. with what we say.

  992. If we do that though,

  993. we're going to be conspicuous.

  994. We're going to stand out.

  995. And we are going to have pressure

  996. and sometimes intimidation

  997. against us

  998. because standing

  999. can be a lonely thing.

  1000. Being,

  1001. nobody really likes

  1002. to be conspicuous,

  1003. do we?

  1004. Nobody really likes

1005. to be the only one standing.

1006. But if we're going to stand for Christ,

1007. there are going to be times

1008. we are the only one standing.

1009. If we're going to do

1010. what God wants us to do,

1011. there are going to be times

  1012. when we are conspicuous

  1013. because nobody around us

1014. is going to stand with us.

  1015. It's going to happen.

  1016. Standing is conspicuous.

  1017. Not only that,

  1018. but standing is condemned

  1019. by the world.

  1020. Standing is condemned

  1021. by the world.

  1022. We already mentioned

  1023. how these three Hebrews

1024. knew that they were going

1025. to be thrown into a fiery furnace

  1026. if they stood.

  1027. They knew the condemnation

  1028. that they were facing.

1029. And as we go on

  1030. with the story,

  1031. which we won't read

  1032. for time's sake,

1033. as we go on with the story,

1034. we find out that indeed

  1035. it did happen.

  1036. They were brought

  1037. before Nebuchadnezzar.

  1038. They were condemned

  1039. and they were thrown

  1040. into the furnace.

  1041. They were condemned

  1042. by the world.

  1043. And if we stand,

1044. if we stand and say,

  1045. nevertheless,

  1046. we are not going

  1047. to bow down.

1048. We are not going to do

1049. what you told us to do.

1050. We are going to obey God

  1051. rather than man.

  1052. There are times

  1053. where the world

1054. is going to condemn us.

  1055. The world is going

  1056. to dislike us.

1057. We are going to hear

  1058. harsh things.

1059. We are going to suffer

  1060. unjust actions.

1061. The events of the last

  1062. couple of weeks

  1063. should certainly show us

1064. that this is the truth.

  1065. It doesn't take a great

  1066. deal of memory,

  1067. does it?

  1068. We've had an illustration

  1069. brought to our eyes

  1070. within the last couple

  1071. of weeks

  1072. that just standing

  1073. for what is right

  1074. and being conspicuous.

  1075. I don't think there's

  1076. anyone that can doubt

  1077. that the person

  1078. I'm speaking of

  1079. was a very conspicuous

  1080. person.

  1081. That very often

  1082. when we do that,

  1083. we are condemned

  1084. by the world.

1085. We will be yelled at.

1086. We will be unjustly accused.

  1087. We will be hated.

  1088. And sometimes,

  1089. sometimes it comes down

  1090. to the ultimate price.

  1091. Oh, this is America.

  1092. It can't happen.

1093. It happened two weeks ago.

  1094. Not only that,

  1095. but yes,

  1096. this is America.

  1097. But I'm telling you

  1098. right now,

  1099. today,

  1100. it is happening

  1101. all over this world.

  1102. Have you heard

  1103. about the Christian villages

  1104. being burnt down?

  1105. Check it out.

1106. You're not going to find it

  1107. on CNN.

  1108. But check it out.

  1109. There are people

  1110. that are standing up

  1111. for Christ

  1112. that are suffering

  1113. martyrdom today.

  1114. Now as a boy,

  1115. I had to drive a,

  1116. drive.

  1117. They didn't let

  1118. junior high kids

  1119. drive the bus.

  1120. I had to ride

  1121. a bus

  1122. to school.

  1123. And it just happened

1124. that on the way out

1125. and on the way back,

  1126. there was a broadcast

  1127. by a man named

  1128. Paul Harvey.

  1129. Who remembers Paul Harvey?

  1130. Good,

  1131. I'm not the only

  1132. old one here.

  1133. Okay.

  1134. I just insulted

  1135. half the congregation

  1136. right there.

1137. What do you mean me?

  1138. What?

  1139. What?

  1140. Okay,

  1141. you get a pass.

  1142. Paul Harvey was fun

  1143. to listen to.

  1144. He was,

  1145. and he was interesting.

  1146. But there was times

1147. where he had a commentary,

1148. and part of the commentary

  1149. he used this phrase,

1150. it is not one world.

  1151. Can I tell you

  1152. that because we're Americans

  1153. and we're used to

1154. the way things are here,

  1155. that's not the way

1156. it is in all the world.

1157. It is not one world.

  1158. Standing is condemned

  1159. by the world,

  1160. and standing for Christ.

  1161. Well,

1162. how can standing for Christ

1163. be condemned by the world?

  1164. We're just trying

1165. to show them God's love.

  1166. We're just trying

  1167. to show them

1168. that they can be saved.

  1169. We're just trying

  1170. to help them.

  1171. Nevertheless,

  1172. because the world

  1173. hated our Lord,

  1174. we shouldn't be surprised

  1175. if they hate us

  1176. just because we love

  1177. our Lord.

  1178. 2 Timothy,

  1179. in chapter 3,

  1180. the apostle Paul writes,

  1181. Yea,

1182. and all that will live

  1183. godly in Christ Jesus

  1184. shall suffer persecution.

  1185. Just because we stand

  1186. for God

  1187. and we obey God,

  1188. we shouldn't be surprised.

1189. As a matter of fact,

  1190. we should expect

1191. that we will suffer persecution.

  1192. Jesus himself said

1193. in the Gospel of John,

1194. If the world hate you,

1195. you know that it hated me

  1196. before it hated you.

1197. If you are of the world,

1198. the world would love his own,

1199. but because you are not

  1200. of the world,

1201. but I have chosen you

  1202. out of the world,

  1203. therefore the world

  1204. hateth you.

  1205. Remember the word

1206. that I said unto you,

1207. The servant is not greater

  1208. than his Lord.

1209. If they have persecuted me,

1210. they will also persecute you.

  1211. If they have kept

  1212. my saying,

1213. they will keep yours also,

  1214. but all these things

  1215. they do unto you

  1216. for my name's sake.

  1217. Because they know not

  1218. him that sent me.

  1219. Standing for God

1220. is not appreciated out there.

  1221. Standing up and saying,

  1222. No, this is right,

1223. and no, this is wrong,

  1224. because that's what

  1225. this book says.

  1226. Not because that's what

  1227. society says.

  1228. Not that's because

  1229. what science falsely

  1230. called says.

  1231. But because this book

  1232. says so,

1233. and because God says so,

  1234. this is right,

  1235. and this is wrong,

1236. because it says it in here.

  1237. That is hated.

  1238. Saying,

  1239. No, I will not

  1240. just go along.

  1241. I will not be a sheep

1242. that is led by the world.

  1243. I will be a sheep

1244. that is led by my Savior.

  1245. That is condemned

  1246. by the world.

  1247. That is hated

  1248. by the world.

  1249. Say,

  1250. Brother Scott,

1251. you are not encouraging me.

  1252. So far,

  1253. you've talked about

  1254. being conspicuous

  1255. and everybody knowing

  1256. what we are.

  1257. So far,

  1258. you've talked about

  1259. standing being commanded

  1260. and that I'm supposed

  1261. to obey God,

  1262. but because of that,

1263. it's going to be conspicuous

1264. and I'm going to stand out

1265. and I'm going to be different

1266. and people are not going

  1267. to appreciate it

  1268. because it's condemned

  1269. by the world

1270. and I may have to suffer

  1271. for standing for God.

  1272. Oh,

  1273. that we could suffer

  1274. for Jesus.

  1275. I am so sorry,

  1276. but we have lost

  1277. the value of suffering

  1278. as a church.

  1279. We have lost

  1280. the fact that

  1281. suffering for Christ

1282. is one of the greatest things

1283. that we could possibly do.

  1284. We think that God

  1285. is out there

  1286. to just shower down

  1287. blessings upon us

1288. and to make our lives easy

1289. and to make our path clear

1290. and to make the sun shine

1291. upon us every single day

1292. and let me ask you,

1293. what are we doing for Him?

1294. We want so much for Him

  1295. and oh,

  1296. He is so generous,

  1297. isn't He?

  1298. Oh,

  1299. He is so loving.

  1300. Oh,

1301. He is so much better

  1302. to us

1303. than we ever could consider,

1304. than we could ever expect,

1305. that we could ever dream.

1306. He is so much better

  1307. to us.

1308. And what do we return

  1309. to Him?

  1310. Brother Scott,

  1311. I don't know why

  1312. you're preaching

  1313. to me that way.

1314. I'm in church Sunday morning.

  1315. I'm giving up

  1316. my Sunday morning.

  1317. Congratulations.

  1318. Say,

  1319. what about you,

  1320. Brother Scott?

1321. I'm in the same boat

  1322. you're in.

  1323. Believe me,

1324. before I preach this to you,

1325. I preach it to me.

  1326. before I ask people

1327. to kneel down at the altar

  1328. and get right,

1329. I have to get right myself.

1330. What has it cost you lately

  1331. to stand for God?

1332. What has it cost me lately

  1333. to stand for God?

1334. What has it ever cost me

  1335. in my entire life

  1336. to stand for God?

1337. Have I ever had somebody

  1338. in my face

1339. because I stood for God?

  1340. Yes.

  1341. Cursed me out?

  1342. Threatened my job?

  1343. Yes.

  1344. 20 years ago.

  1345. 20 years ago.

1346. I am ashamed to say

  1347. it's been that long.

  1348. I don't enjoy

  1349. somebody getting my face.

  1350. I'm not talking about

  1351. being irritating.

  1352. I'm not talking about

  1353. being a jerk.

  1354. Okay?

  1355. Please get me,

1356. don't think you gotta go out there

  1357. and be that Christian

  1358. that rubs everybody

  1359. the wrong way.

  1360. Just standing for God,

  1361. vocally,

  1362. publicly,

  1363. living our lives

  1364. righteously

  1365. should be enough

  1366. for somebody

1367. to get upset with us.

  1368. Unjustly.

  1369. Again,

1370. this is not a license

  1371. to be a jerk.

  1372. Say,

  1373. Brother Scott,

  1374. you are still not

  1375. encouraging me.

  1376. Last point.

  1377. And all God's people

  1378. said amen.

  1379. Standing is not only

  1380. condemned by the world,

  1381. but standing is

  1382. commended by God.

1383. I want you to notice,

1384. most of us who have been

1385. in church for a while,

  1386. we know this story

  1387. forwards and backwards.

1388. We know that the Hebrew men,

  1389. these three Hebrews,

  1390. stood for God.

1391. We know that they were

  1392. condemned by the world.

1393. We know that they were

1394. thrown into the fiery furnace

  1395. and we also know

  1396. that they were delivered

  1397. miraculously.

  1398. That God was there

1399. in that furnace with them.

  1400. That they came out

  1401. of that furnace

  1402. with their bonds

  1403. burnt off

1404. and not even the smell

  1405. of smoke upon them.

1406. If you have ever been

  1407. outside to a bonfire,

  1408. you know exactly

  1409. how hard that is

  1410. not to smell smoke.

  1411. I don't know

1412. what it is about me,

1413. but I seem to be

  1414. a smoke magnet.

  1415. If I'm outside

  1416. at a bonfire,

1417. if I sit on this,

  1418. the bonfire's right here,

1419. if I sit on this side

  1420. of the bonfire,

1421. the smoke goes this way.

  1422. So because nobody enjoys

1423. having a face full of smoke,

1424. I get up and I move around

1425. to this side of the bonfire

  1426. and guess what happens?

1427. The smoke goes this way.

  1428. I don't understand it,

  1429. but there it is.

  1430. And if you've been

  1431. around somebody,

  1432. if you've ever been

  1433. around somebody

  1434. who smokes a lot,

  1435. you know that it

  1436. clings to you.

1437. That smoke from the bonfire

  1438. will make you smell

  1439. for a little bit.

  1440. Smoke from somebody

  1441. continuously smoking cigarettes

  1442. clings to them.

1443. It gets into their pores.

1444. And yet these three men

1445. came out of that furnace

1446. and the smell of the smoke

1447. did not even cling unto them.

  1448. Why is that?

  1449. It's because God commended

  1450. their standing for Him.

  1451. They stood for God

1452. and God stood with them.

1453. We go through the Bible

  1454. and we read time

  1455. after time after time.

  1456. In this very book,

  1457. we read about Daniel

  1458. standing for God

  1459. and refusing to pray

  1460. only to Nebuchadnezzar,

  1461. but praying to God

1462. as He always had done

  1463. and being thrown

1464. into a den of lions

1465. and God showed His commendation

  1466. of Daniel standing,

  1467. even though the world

  1468. condemned Him

  1469. and threw Him

1470. into the den of lions.

  1471. God showed His commendation,

  1472. His approval

  1473. of what Daniel did

  1474. by delivering Him

  1475. from the lion's den.

1476. And all of us would say,

1477. oh, I want to have

  1478. God's commendation

  1479. on my life.

1480. If we want to have

  1481. God's approval

1482. on our life like that,

  1483. you've got to realize

1484. we're going to have to go

  1485. through that condemnation first.

  1486. You don't get delivered

  1487. from a furnace

  1488. you were never in.

  1489. You don't get delivered

1490. from a den of lions

1491. that no one threw you into.

  1492. We need to change

  1493. our minds about condemnation

1494. and we need to change

  1495. our minds about suffering

1496. and we need to change

  1497. our minds about hardship

1498. and look at it like

1499. I am suffering for God.

  1500. I'm not suffering

1501. because I did something stupid.

  1502. I'm not suffering

  1503. because I was difficult.

1504. If I can honestly say

  1505. I'm suffering for Jesus,

1506. we should look at that

  1507. as a commendation

  1508. and look for God

1509. and what God is working

1510. in us and through us

  1511. to do through that

1512. and look for a way

  1513. that we can give

  1514. a lasting testimony

1515. to how good God is.

  1516. Say, Brother Scott,

  1517. they were condemned,

  1518. they were thrown in,

  1519. they were delivered.

  1520. That's a wonderful thing.

1521. I want to see that.

  1522. Sometimes you're not delivered.

  1523. Sometimes you're not delivered.

  1524. Turn back real quick,

  1525. if you will,

  1526. to Acts chapter 7.

    Acts 7 chapter mention

  1527. Acts chapter 7.

    Acts 7 chapter mention

  1528. In Acts chapter 7,

    Acts 7 chapter mention

1529. we have the story of Stephen

  1530. in the early church.

  1531. In Acts chapter 7,

    Acts 7 chapter mention

  1532. Stephen was hauled

  1533. before the Jewish council,

  1534. was hauled

  1535. before the Sanhedrin,

  1536. and he was condemned.

  1537. He stood before them

1538. and he preached to them

1539. and he laid it down.

  1540. He stood upright,

  1541. he stood firm,

  1542. and he glorified God.

1543. Say, what did that get him?

  1544. Verse number 57.

  1545. They cried out

  1546. with a loud voice

  1547. and stopped their ears

  1548. and ran upon him

  1549. with one accord

1550. and cast him out of the city

  1551. and stoned him.

1552. That's what it got him.

1553. It did not get him

  1554. a miraculous deliverance.

1555. It did not get him

  1556. an instantaneous healing.

1557. It did not get him freedom.

  1558. He stood for God

1559. and it got him stoned.

  1560. Say again, Brother Scott,

  1561. you're not encouraging me.

1562. I want you to consider

  1563. three other verses

  1564. before you tell me

1565. that Stephen wasted his life,

  1566. before you tell me

  1567. that Stephen was not

  1568. commended by God,

  1569. before you tell me

  1570. that Stephen's suffering

  1571. was for nothing.

1572. I want you to consider

  1573. three other verses.

  1574. Verse number 50,

  1575. well, four verses.

1576. Look up at verse number 55.

1577. But he, that being Stephen,

1578. he, being full of the Holy Ghost,

  1579. looked up steadfastly

  1580. into heaven

1581. and saw the glory of God

  1582. and Jesus standing

1583. on the right hand of God

  1584. and said,

1585. behold, I see the heavens open

1586. and the Son of Man

1587. standing on the right hand of God.

  1588. I would say that's a commendation.

  1589. I would say that that's something

1590. I would long to have.

1591. I would say that that is

  1592. Jesus Christ commending

  1593. what Stephen has done

  1594. and rewarding him

  1595. beyond anything

  1596. that most of us

  1597. can ever expect

  1598. to be rewarded with.

  1599. But that's not

  1600. the only commendation

  1601. that God showed

  1602. for Stephen.

  1603. In Acts chapter 8,

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  1604. notice if you will

  1605. in verse number 4,

  1606. therefore,

  1607. what's that therefore

  1608. refer back to?

  1609. The martyrdom of Stephen.

  1610. Stephen being stoned.

  1611. Therefore,

1612. they that were scattered abroad

  1613. went everywhere

  1614. preaching the word.

  1615. See,

  1616. at first,

  1617. the church in Jerusalem

  1618. stayed in Jerusalem.

1619. but that was not God's plan.

1620. God's plan was for Christianity

  1621. to be spread out.

1622. They were supposed to go out

  1623. into all the world

  1624. and preach the gospel.

1625. But they huddled close together

  1626. and so,

  1627. through Stephen's persecution,

  1628. they were sent out.

  1629. They were scared

  1630. and they ran,

  1631. but as they ran,

  1632. they preached the gospel.

  1633. Turn now,

  1634. if you will,

  1635. to Acts chapter 11.

    Acts 11 chapter mention

  1636. Say,

  1637. how do you know

  1638. they preached the gospel

  1639. because of Stephen?

  1640. Acts chapter 11

    Acts 11 chapter mention

  1641. and verse number 19.

  1642. Now they which were

  1643. scattered abroad

  1644. upon the persecution

  1645. that arose about Stephen

  1646. traveled as far as

  1647. Phenis and Cyprus

  1648. and Antioch

  1649. preaching the word

1650. to none but unto the Jews only.

  1651. And some of them

  1652. were men of Cyprus

  1653. and Cyrene

  1654. which when they were

  1655. come to Antioch

  1656. spake unto the Grecians

1657. preaching the Lord Jesus Christ.

  1658. Stephen died

  1659. testifying and standing

1660. for the Lord Jesus Christ

  1661. and God gave him

  1662. that tremendous vision

  1663. and that tremendous thing

1664. that he was able to see

  1665. and the approval

1666. that he was able to see

  1667. even before he died.

  1668. But more than that,

1669. because Stephen stood for God,

  1670. God used that

  1671. to accomplish his purposes

  1672. in the church

1673. to see the gospel preached

  1674. far and wide.

  1675. Why?

  1676. Because one man stood.

  1677. Because one man stood.

  1678. Brethren,

1679. I just have one question

  1680. for us this morning.

1681. And I do mean us.

  1682. One question.

  1683. Will you stand?

  1684. Will we stand?

  1685. Will I stand?

  1686. You know,

  1687. it's going to be

  1688. a whole lot easier

1689. when you come to that crisis point

1690. to make the right decision

1691. if you make the right decision

1692. before you come to the crisis point.

1693. If you know what you're going to do

1694. before you get to that crisis,

1695. it makes it so much easier

  1696. to make the decision

  1697. during the crisis.

1698. So I ask you again.

  1699. Will you stand?

  1700. Normally, right now,

  1701. I have everybody

  1702. bow their heads,

  1703. close their eyes.

  1704. I do.

  1705. Normally I do.

  1706. Not today.

  1707. Not today.

  1708. If the Holy Spirit

1709. has moved in your heart

  1710. and you say,

  1711. Brother Scott,

1712. I will stand for Christ.

  1713. Stand up.

  1714. Don't look around.

  1715. Don't see who's saying sat.

  1716. Don't.

1717. It's none of your business.

  1718. You worry about you.

  1719. Praise God.

  1720. Let's pray together.

  1721. Let's pray together.
