  1. In 1 Thessalonians, we find that when somebody turns to Christ from your sin and your

  2. ! former life that things are different. You know, we see that, you know, if you remember

  3. in the Bible, you can see many examples of this. You know, you think in Jesus, when he talked to

  4. a man named Zacchaeus, you know, Zacchaeus was transformed when he came to a saving knowledge

  5. of Christ. He was a different man than he was before. We find this happened also to the woman

  6. at the well. She was a different woman after she had an interaction of salvation with Jesus,

  7. recognizing him as the Savior. You know, you think about the maniac of Gadara. He was a totally

  8. different individual when it came to after salvation. It's seen, the change there is seen,

  9. just as it was for those in Thessalonica. You know, we looked back in Acts chapter 17 and talked about

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  10. Jason, the one whose house the church had been established in, and the others understood

  11. the very fact that Jesus is the Messiah, the Christ, and believed. They trusted in the word of truth,

  12. having the promise of the Holy Spirit seal them with the promise of God. And we're going to see

  13. here this morning, we're going to read about how Paul declares how he could know that this was real

  14. and what took place. Because if you found 1 Thessalonians this morning, let's stand together

  15. in chapter 1. We'll pick up here in verse 5 as we read the word of God here this morning.

  16. Notice this, it says,

  17. For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much

  18. assurance. As ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake. And ye became followers of us

  19. and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy in the Holy Ghost, so that ye were

  20. a sample to all that believe in Macedonia and Achaia. For from you sounded out the word of the

  21. Lord not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place. Your faith, the God word, is spread

  22. abroad so that we need not speak anything. For they themselves show us what manner of entering in we had

  23. unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, and to wait for

  24. his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.

  25. Let's pray. Heavenly Fathers, we take a few moments here this morning to look into your word, Lord,

  26. to look into the reality of salvation, the reality that takes place, the change that takes place.

  27. What leads to that change, Lord, what things you have set in place. But Lord, help us to understand

  28. the reality of it, Lord. We can talk around it, and we can talk about it, but Lord, it's only effectual

  29. if we apply it to our lives. And Lord, we pray we just would grab a hold of the truth today and the

  30. necessity not only for ourselves, but for others also. And Lord, we just ask it all in your precious name.

  31. Amen. May be seated. You know, today I want you to see that your salvation is not determined by your

  32. ability or how good you are. You know, we find that oftentimes people get that mindset. They say,

  33. well, I want to trust Christ, but then I want to trust what I can do. I want to trust Christ, but,

  34. you know, maybe I still need to do this in order to be saved. You know, people love to have Jesus plus.

  35. You know, they want Jesus and they want to do, I want my part in it. You know, I want to be able to

  36. do what I can do in my abilities and my goodness. But I want you to understand the truth is very simple

  37. that Jesus Christ provided the only way and the only means of redemption. Our salvation is built solely

  38. in him. There's nothing else. There's not any action you can take. There's not some good deeds you can

  39. do. There's not some class you can take. You can't become good enough to get to heaven. You know, you

  40. can't perform enough rituals to get to heaven. I want you to understand it's only the way and the means to

  41. heaven is through Jesus Christ. There is no other way. And we're going to see here this morning as

  42. Paul talks about those and what happened there at Thessalonica. Because remember, this was only a few

  43. weeks past the time he had been there. He was now down in Athens and he was writing back to them.

  44. And he's really, this is a letter complimenting them. The words already reached me that there's

  45. something different that took place in Thessalonica. It impacted not only them, but others.

  46. It impacted those around about them. And we understand this dynamic that Jesus was the one

  47. that changed him. He is the one that's everything that we need. You know, if you've been listening a

  48. little bit in the news this week, there's been some discussion about the comments that our president

  49. made regarding one's confidence in going to heaven. You know, he made some comments about,

  50. well, I'm not sure I'm going to heaven. And people were on both sides. I mean, they're playing all

  51. sorts of things. You know what? When you start talking about how you get to heaven, it quickly

  52. separates people. People with misunderstandings and half-truths. People who outright lie. But there's

  53. truth. And the question is, where do we get our solid foundation of how one gets to heaven?

  54. what opens that door? What's the truth about it? Because that's important to understand. He was

  55. not sure, didn't know. Yet we see time and time again that what is offered through the blood of Jesus

  56. Christ is something we can know. Paul says, look back up in verse four in our text. Notice that first

  57. word of that verse, it says what? What's the word? Knowing. Knowing. It's something you can know.

  58. If you know something, you have what? You have assurance about it. It's something you can know.

  59. You know, the Bible tells us in 1 John chapter 5, John the apostle here, he tells us this. He says,

    1 John 5 chapter mention

  60. these things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God that ye might what?

  61. Know that ye have eternal life and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. I want you

  62. to see here. He says, I want you to know that if you're saved, you're secure. And if you're not saved,

  63. I want you to understand there's a way you can know that you are. If you're here today, I hope that

  64. you have a know-so salvation, not a hope-so salvation. There's a lot of people today walk

  65. around hope they get to heaven. They'll talk and say, well, I did this and I did that and I did this

  66. over here. And, and, uh, you know, I went to church and, you know, grandma took me as a kid,

  67. so I must be okay. Or they did a confirmation class of some kind and somebody said, okay, you know,

  68. you're okay. You know, you got your, got your graduation certificate that says you get to get

  69. to heaven. You know what? I want you to understand the certificate of getting to heaven is the Holy

  70. Spirit dwelling within you. It's not on a piece of paper. It's not what the preacher can declare.

  71. It's not what somebody else can declare. It's only what you, between you and God can declare.

  72. Because when you trust God, God says, I declare you righteous before me. And he says, I give you my

  73. spirit as a seal and an earnest of what's to come and that you can know what's going to happen.

  74. But I want you to understand in order for somebody to know, there's some things that need to take place

  75. because Paul lines out some things about the process that took place here at Thessalonica,

  76. because in order for somebody to get saved, there is a process. There's some things that need to take

  77. place. It's not just some mystical thing that happens. Or it's not some amazing thing that you

  78. can just, uh, a one, two, three, repeat after me. Now you're okay. You know, that's one of the problems

  79. we have today is people are looking for the quick, easy fix. Just say this and you'll be fine. You know

  80. what? You better understand what you're saying. If you don't understand it, because the Bible says you

  81. can say words, but if they're not from your heart before God with an honest, open heart before God,

  82. you know what? They're just words. We've all learned very quickly. People can say the right thing,

  83. but their heart is not in it. When it comes to salvation, when you confess before God that he's

  84. your, you need him as a savior, that you're a sinner. It's a heart change that takes place. It's from the

  85. heart. It's not because somebody said, repeat these words. Salvation is not a magical incantation.

  86. It's not some mystical thing that happens. It's something that transforms a life in a moment

  87. when they call upon him and God says there's something that takes place there. And we'll

  88. look at that here in just a moment. But I want you to see here, the process of salvation is important

  89. because it involves a course or operation that opens the door for one to call upon the Lord.

  90. You know, the first step in this process involves the word of God. Notice what it tells

  91. us in our text here, for our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power.

  92. Now I want you to see here, the word, the spoken word is important. You know, the context here

  93. is very clear. Turn back to Acts chapter 17 for a moment. Acts chapter 17, what is Paul talking

Acts 17 chapter mention Acts 17 chapter mention

  94. about here? Well, let's go back and look and see what the book of Acts tells us about Paul's time here.

  95. Because what word is he talking about? What's he talking about here? Because in Acts chapter 17

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  96. and verse 2, we find from the word of God, look what it says, and Paul, as his manner was, went in

  97. unto them and three Sabbath days reasoned with them from what? The scripture. Paul didn't come in and

  98. said, hey guys, I want you to listen to me. I have a divine revelation from God. You know, there's a lot of

  99. people get caught up when somebody says, I have a revelation. I want you to understand that Paul

  100. started in the right foundation. That's the word of God. He said he reasoned with them from what? The

  101. scripture. Because our foundation of our faith is not built on what the preacher says. It's not built

  102. on what anybody else says. It's built upon the word of God. Because we know what God has said.

  103. But notice what it says. He didn't just say that he reasoned with them. Notice this verse 3,

  104. opening and alleging. In other words, I want you to see here, he opened the Bible and he began to show

  105. them that Jesus is the one they were looking for. Now you've got to understand the audience. Remember

  106. where Paul was? He was in the synagogue. You know, some people wonder why did Paul preach

  107. different things, different places? Paul understood where his audience was beginning.

  108. It's important, especially when you're witnessing, to try to get a grasp. Where's the person you're

  109. talking to at? You know, that's one of the things because it's hard for somebody to understand.

  110. They don't know they're a sinner. It's hard to understand the need of a savior. Well,

  111. I'm a good person. I don't need that. You've got to understand where they're at.

  112. We live in a nation today where people are righteous in their own eyes. I can believe what

  113. I want to be, what I want to believe because of how I feel about it. You know, we get in a lot of

  114. trouble because of how we feel. Because I want you to understand, sometimes your feelings line up with

  115. reality. But I'll give you a little clue. You'll find the older you get, the more mature you get.

  116. Oftentimes your feelings might have contained a little reality, but don't line up with reality.

  117. Because they're your perception of what's going on, not the reality.

  118. And we get caught up and we start leading by not reality, but by how we feel.

  119. And people begin to think, well, I can get to heaven however I feel I can get there.

  120. I don't feel God's going to judge me. Well, you know, that doesn't matter how you feel about it.

  121. You know? That'd be like saying I can go down here and rob a place,

  122. listen, I don't feel the police should arrest me. And the majority of people in reality would go,

  123. doesn't matter how you feel about that. Truth is the only thing that matters.

  124. But notice what he preached. He preached a very specific message that Christ must have suffered

  125. and risen again from the dead and that this Jesus whom I preach unto you is Christ.

  126. You know what he's saying? Hey guys, the one that you see pictured throughout the whole Old Testament,

  127. I believe Paul, when it says he opened in a ledge, he went back to the Old Testament

  128. and began walking through the sacrifices that they did.

  129. He began showing them of what each of the sacrifices meant,

  130. what it did, and how it pointed to the Savior.

  131. And he said, the guy, he said, men and women,

  132. what you've been practicing your whole life has been pointing you to this.

  133. Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of all these things.

  134. His sacrifice didn't just roll sin forward.

  135. His sacrifice covered it.

  136. His sacrifice took care of it.

  137. It was sufficient for all.

  138. It was a containment of everything.

  139. Just as he said in Romans chapter 10, verse 15, you know,

    Romans 10:15

  140. the reality is when Paul was there, he said this, he says,

  141. as it is written, how beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace

  142. and bring glad tidings of good things.

  143. You know, I want you to understand that the word of God needs to be presented

  144. for somebody to be saved.

  145. Now, the means of presentation can be spoken, it can be written, it can be on a video.

  146. I mean, we have so many different means of communication today,

  147. but I want you to understand the word of God has to be communicated in some form

  148. for an individual to understand their need of salvation.

  149. It's important.

  150. It was the scripture that we could know who Jesus is and what he had accomplished.

  151. Look back to John chapter 6 for a moment.

    John 6 chapter mention

  152. Here's Jesus, and he makes this statement.

  153. He says, it is written in the prophets.

  154. Now, what's Jesus referring to?

  155. He's referring to the Old Testament.

  156. And they shall be all taught of God.

  157. Where are they taught from?

  158. The word of God.

  159. Every man, therefore, that hath heard and hath learned of the Father cometh unto me.

  160. You know what Jesus said?

  161. You come unto me because you understand what the scripture says about me.

  162. You understand the truth that declares who I am,

  163. the truth that declares what I've done.

  164. The truth that declares what's been accomplished.

  165. You know, it's a means through which we learn that we have come short.

  166. You know what?

  167. If it wasn't for the Bible, we'd all be self-righteous.

  168. You know, by nature, we're self-righteous.

  169. I mean, you've talked about this before.

  170. You think about it.

  171. Everybody's like, I'm not as badass.

  172. You know what that is?

  173. That's self-righteousness.

  174. I'm a little bit better.

  175. You know, Romans 3.10, though, makes it very clear.

  176. As it is written, there is none righteous, no, not one.

  177. I want you to understand that when that was written,

  178. it's saying it's already been written.

  179. I'm just telling you what's already there.

  180. I'm not giving you a new concept.

  181. I'm giving you an old concept that stands true.

  182. There's not a one of us that are born righteous.

  183. The Word of God being preached is important.

  184. Look over to Hebrews chapter 4.

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  185. Hebrews chapter 4 and verse 2 says,

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  186. For unto us was the gospel preached as well as it was unto them.

  187. But I want you to notice here, the gospel can be preached,

  188. but something has to take place.

  189. Notice what it says,

  190. But the word preached did not profit them,

  191. not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.

  192. Now, this is very important to understand

  193. because you can listen your whole life to the gospel,

  194. but until you make it effectual for yourself, it's irrelevant.

  195. You can know what you ought to do,

  196. but the only problem is,

  197. it's only good if you do what you ought to do.

  198. To take action upon it.

  199. Mix it with faith.

  200. Now, faith is something that's not just,

  201. Well, I hope so.

  202. I'm going to put all my money over here.

  203. It's not a gamble.

  204. Biblical faith is not like going down here and saying,

  205. I hope my team wins, so I'm going to put $100 on them.

  206. You know, there's people today that treat Jesus

  207. like I'm placing my bet with Jesus.

  208. I want you to understand it's not placing a bet with Jesus.

  209. Faith is saying, I know, he's all I got.

  210. There's no other means.

  211. There's nothing else I can have but him.

  212. To understand, Romans chapter 10, verse 17 says this,

    Romans 10:17

  213. So then faith cometh by what?

  214. Hearing and hearing by what?

  215. The word of God.

  216. When Paul says, he says,

  217. How do I know?

  218. Because the gospel was preached unto you.

  219. The good news is just that.

  220. It is a notification of the way

  221. and the means to come to God

  222. has been accomplished.

  223. How do we know the word is going to be effectual?

  224. Because Paul says that the word of God is powerful.

  225. He said the word didn't just come in speech,

  226. but it came in power.

  227. That's the reason he knew it was going to do some work

  228. in lives of individuals.

  229. But I want you to understand,

  230. people can hear the gospel and ignore it.

  231. Because if it's not mixed with faith,

  232. it becomes just words.

  233. It just rolls through their mind.

  234. But the word of God is a tool

  235. that we're going to see here in just a moment

  236. because he also talks about the Holy Spirit.

  237. And the Holy Spirit takes the word of God

  238. and does something with it when people hear it.

  239. Because it affects something,

  240. it affects the heart of an individual.

  241. It impacts what we call the conscience.

  242. And no matter what people try to say,

  243. everybody has a conscience.

  244. Some might be seared,

  245. some might be hardened,

  246. but they still function.

  247. But notice in power,

  248. that which is spoken is important,

  249. but it must have something behind it.

  250. The power is God himself.

  251. You know, look a little later

  252. in 1 Thessalonians chapter 2.

    1 Thessalonians 2 chapter mention

  253. Look over there in verse 13.

  254. And we'll talk about this a little more

  255. when we get over there here in a few weeks.

  256. But look here in verse 13.

  257. It says,

  258. For this cause also we thank God without ceasing,

  259. because you received the word of God,

  260. which you heard of us,

  261. and you received it not as the word of what?

  262. Men,

  263. but as in truth,

  264. the word of God,

  265. which effectually worketh also

  266. in you that believe.

  267. The gospel is the power of God

  268. operating, working, and stirring

  269. the human heart.

  270. You know, Paul says in Romans chapter 1

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  271. in verse 16,

  272. he says,

  273. For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ,

  274. for it is the power of God

  275. unto salvation to everyone

  276. that what?

  277. Believeth to the Jew first

  278. and also to the Greek.

  279. Look up in the gospel of John.

  280. Look in John chapter 1 in verse 12.

    John 1 chapter mention

  281. It says,

  282. But many as received him,

  283. to them gave he what?

  284. Power to become the sons of God,

  285. even to them that what?

  286. Believe on his name.

  287. The word is the tool

  288. that is present

  289. with the power of God behind it,

  290. but it's the tool

  291. the Holy Spirit uses

  292. to convict and convince the sinner

  293. of their condition

  294. and the solution to the problem.

  295. You know, today,

  296. I want you to understand

  297. the great thing about the gospel

  298. and the great thing about what God did,

  299. God doesn't just condemn

  300. and say,

  301. Hey, here's your problem.

  302. You know, we have a lot of that today

  303. amongst people.

  304. You know,

  305. I can identify the problem,

  306. but you know what?

  307. God understood we needed

  308. something more important

  309. than identifying the problem.

  310. We needed the solution.

  311. The scripture tells us

  312. our problem is sin,

  313. separates us from God,

  314. and he says,

  315. I've made the means

  316. and the way

  317. I've provided the solution.

  318. That's the good news, you know?

  319. The problem is never the good news,

  320. but you know what?

  321. You can never solve a problem

  322. if you don't know what it is.

  323. But once you know

  324. what the problem is,

  325. what people are looking for,

  326. they say,

  327. What do I do with it?

  328. What do I do with it?

  329. What do you do with your sin

  330. that separates you from God?

  331. You place it on the cross

  332. with Jesus Christ

  333. who took it upon himself.

  334. The Holy Spirit, though,

  335. is present.

  336. The word is presented,

  337. but the task of the Holy Spirit

  338. is to use the truth

  339. in the heart of a person.

  340. Notice here,

  341. back in our text in verse 5,

  342. it says,

  343. In the Holy Ghost.

  344. You know,

  345. in not in word only,

  346. but in power

  347. and in the Holy Ghost.

  348. You know,

  349. Jesus told his disciples

  350. that the Holy Spirit

  351. would come and do a work

  352. in the lives of people.

  353. Now,

  354. I want you to understand

  355. that when you're witnessing

  356. to somebody,

  357. you're not witnessing

  358. in your power.

  359. You're not witnessing

  360. in what you can do.

  361. A witness is one

  362. that just tells what's happened

  363. or what they understand,

  364. what's transpired.

  365. God is the one

  366. who works on the heart

  367. of an individual.

  368. Look at John chapter 16.

    John 16 chapter mention

  369. John chapter 16

    John 16 chapter mention

  370. here in verse 8,

  371. it says,

  372. And when he has come,

  373. who's he talking about?

  374. He's talking about the Holy Ghost,

  375. the Holy Spirit.

  376. He will reprove the world of sin

  377. and of righteousness,

  378. of judgment,

  379. of sin because they believe not on me,

  380. of righteousness because I go to my Father

  381. and you see me no more,

  382. of judgment because the prince

  383. and the power

  384. or the prince of this world

  385. is judged.

  386. You know,

  387. I want you to understand

  388. that the Holy Spirit's task

  389. takes what's been planted

  390. with the word of God

  391. and begins impacting

  392. the heart of an individual.

  393. They're the one that convicts

  394. and convinces somebody

  395. of the truth of God's word

  396. because you know what?

  397. It's written upon our heart.

  398. You know,

  399. read Romans chapter 1 and 2.

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  400. People understand

  401. they're going to stand accountable,

  402. but people don't like it.

  403. One day we're going to stand before God.

  404. But you know,

  405. the good part is,

  406. as we're going to look here

  407. in just a little bit,

  408. that if you're saved,

  409. you don't look at God's return in fear.

  410. You look at God's return with joy

  411. because it's like a going home to family.

  412. You're not standing in judgment.

  413. You're standing in acceptance.

  414. If you're saved,

  415. you're accepted in the beloved.

  416. It's a different perspective of God

  417. when he comes.

  418. If you're not saved,

  419. you ought to be scared.

  420. It's a fearful thing

  421. to stand in the presence of God.

  422. The Bible makes it clear

  423. that God is just.

  424. He's going to hold to account.

  425. But notice this next,

  426. in much assurance.

  427. Despite the circumstances of life

  428. that surrounded these things,

  429. I want you to see here,

  430. Paul was very clear here.

  431. This assurance here,

  432. yeah, I don't believe

  433. is tied to the Holy Spirit directly,

  434. even though the Holy Spirit

  435. gives us assurance.

  436. I think what he's writing here

  437. is a little different

  438. because Paul says,

  439. why did I go ahead

  440. and preach the gospel?

  441. Now, you need a little context,

  442. remember.

  443. Paul came to Thessalonica

  444. from where?

  445. From Philippi.

  446. What had happened at Philippi?

  447. Well,

  448. him and Silas

  449. had been beaten

  450. and put in prison.

  451. I imagine when they got

  452. to Thessalonica,

  453. they probably still

  454. weren't looking too good.

  455. They may have looked

  456. a little rough yet.

  457. Because I don't know about you,

  458. but if you study

  459. and understand what happens

  460. when they beat people

  461. in ancient times,

  462. it wasn't a slap on the wrist.

  463. Paul said,

  464. we're not the best presentation.

  465. But he said,

  466. my presentation doesn't matter

  467. because I have assurance

  468. because we have the power of God

  469. and the Holy Spirit

  470. working and mixing with His Word.

  471. That's going to be effectual.

  472. It will do its job.

  473. Paul, you know what?

  474. If you read through

  475. the Apostle Paul's writings,

  476. the one thing you'll find

  477. that I think is clear,

  478. it totally debunks

  479. this wealth

  480. and prosperity gospel.

  481. He preached it in times

  482. when it wasn't too good

  483. for the prosperity gospel.

  484. You imagine Paul

  485. standing up in the synagogue,

  486. still getting up

  487. a little slow

  488. because he's still sore

  489. and beaten,

  490. and say,

  491. hey guys,

  492. I got something for you

  493. that got me beat

  494. at the last place.

  495. That's not good advertising.

  496. But you know what?

  497. Paul said,

  498. it doesn't matter who I am

  499. or what's happened to me.

  500. It matters who God is

  501. and what God can do.

  502. He said,

  503. God makes the difference.

  504. In much assurance.

  505. You know,

  506. we see here

  507. the power of the gospel

  508. worked in their lives

  509. and they became followers.

  510. They became disciples.

  511. Notice in verse 6,

  512. and you became followers

  513. of us

  514. and of the Lord

  515. having received the Word

  516. in much affliction

  517. and with joy

  518. of the Holy Ghost.

  519. You know,

  520. what does this mean,

  521. followers?

  522. You know?

  523. Well,

  524. in this context,

  525. it tells us this,

  526. that when you're saved,

  527. the Scripture tells us

  528. that you're born again.

  529. Let's look at this practically.

  530. You're born again.

  531. You became a child of God.

  532. And like any child,

  533. you need training

  534. and an example to follow.

  535. Now,

  536. if anybody has any questions,

  537. you know,

  538. kids,

  539. little ones,

  540. will follow the example

  541. that they're around.

  542. How a young child acts

  543. is a direct reflection

  544. of the adults in their life.

  545. Why?

  546. Because they're following the example.

  547. As a young child of God

  548. also needs an example

  549. to follow.

  550. We have a fancy name for it today.

  551. It's called discipleship.

  552. What's discipleship about?

  553. Having somebody to encourage

  554. and to follow

  555. and to direct

  556. into maturity.

  557. Paul's telling them

  558. very clearly

  559. that they became followers.

  560. They became,

  561. they wanted to do

  562. what Paul had done.

  563. And so we see here

  564. that even in much affliction,

  565. you know,

  566. you need to remember,

  567. if you go back to Acts 17,

  568. we're not going to read there,

  569. but I just want to remind you,

  570. remember what happened

  571. after Paul left?

  572. They had a stir

  573. and they left

  574. because they came

  575. to the house of Jason

  576. and they drew him

  577. out of the house,

  578. him and others,

  579. and brought him

  580. before the city

  581. and they paid a fine

  582. because of a complaint

  583. against them.

  584. You know,

  585. sometimes following God

  586. costs you physically,

  587. sometimes it costs you financially.

  588. But it's an affliction.

  589. There's a price to pay

  590. to follow God.

  591. It doesn't get you saved,

  592. but the reality is

  593. is you're going to have,

  594. it doesn't exempt you

  595. from problems.

  596. It doesn't mean

  597. everything's going to go

  598. hunky-dory

  599. and everything's going

  600. to fall into place.

  601. It just means

  602. that you have somebody

  603. walking with you

  604. who has a plan

  605. and already knows

  606. what's ahead.

  607. He knows what you're

  608. going to need,

  609. when you're going to need it,

  610. how you're going to need it.

  611. You know,

  612. when we see this,

  613. this assurance,

  614. there of them,

  615. they became followers.

  616. He says,

  617. I know because of what I've seen

  618. and how you wanted

  619. to imitate the things of us

  620. as we were imitating the Lord.

  621. Now that's important

  622. because if you're going

  623. to follow after somebody,

  624. you need to follow,

  625. say,

  626. how are they following the Lord?

  627. Let me make a statement here.

  628. I think that if you're mature,

  629. you don't need to be following

  630. anybody but the Lord,

  631. but you ought,

  632. if you're following the Lord,

  633. you'll be in church.

  634. You'll be following the things

  635. in the order of God

  636. because you're mature enough

  637. to recognize this is what God has said.

  638. But when you're young in the Lord,

  639. you need other people

  640. to come alongside and say,

  641. hey,

  642. this is what you need to do.

  643. Let me share a little experience with you.

  644. Let me show you

  645. what God's word says about that.

  646. Let me keep you out of some trouble

  647. that I got into

  648. because we need to follow

  649. the word of God.

  650. People need to be brought up

  651. into the word of God.

  652. You know,

  653. we ought to encourage one another.

  654. What ought to,

  655. when people are mature,

  656. it's a process of encouraging

  657. and keeping each other focused

  658. on the truth of God's word.

  659. We see here that this is important

  660. because the process is the gospel

  661. is that when we hear the truth

  662. and believe and acknowledge

  663. and accept that truth,

  664. which causes us to trust the Lord,

  665. to rescue,

  666. and to secure the sinner.

  667. Now,

  668. I want you to see here

  669. when Paul's talking here about this,

  670. it's very clear

  671. because we find the process laid out

  672. that the word

  673. and then the Holy Spirit

  674. and then they became,

  675. they called upon the Lord

  676. and they changed

  677. and they did a different direction.

  678. Now,

  679. turn over to Ephesians chapter 1

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  680. for a moment.

  681. Notice this process.

  682. It says,

  683. in whom ye also trusted,

  684. verse 13,

  685. after that ye heard

  686. the word of truth,

  687. the gospel of your salvation,

  688. and also,

  689. whom also after that ye believed,

  690. ye were sealed

  691. with that Holy Spirit of promise.

  692. You see the process there?

  693. The same process took place

  694. in Thessalonica.

  695. They heard

  696. the word of God

  697. stirred within them

  698. by the power of the Holy Spirit.

  699. They made a decision to say,

  700. yes,

  701. I know who I am before God.

  702. I know my accountability before God

  703. and I understand my need

  704. to put all my faith

  705. and trust

  706. in what He says

  707. He's accomplished for me,

  708. that He would apply it

  709. to my account.

  710. And He says,

  711. when that happens,

  712. when you believe,

  713. truly believe,

  714. that's to trust,

  715. to rest assured upon,

  716. to say my only hope

  717. is in not what I can do,

  718. it's not what a church can do,

  719. but it's only what Christ can do.

  720. Then He says,

  721. you were sealed

  722. with that Holy Spirit of promise.

  723. What a wonderful reality.

  724. But look at verse 7,

  725. because I want you to see next

  726. the product of salvation.

  727. Yeah,

  728. product,

  729. salvation produces some.

  730. It produces a life

  731. that's different.

  732. Notice it,

  733. He says,

  734. so you were a sample

  735. to all that believe

  736. in Macedonia and Akedah.

  737. From you sounded out

  738. the word of the Lord,

  739. not only in Macedonia and Akedah,

  740. but also in every place

  741. your faith to God

  742. were to spread abroad

  743. so that you need not to,

  744. we need not to speak anything.

  745. Now,

  746. in context here,

  747. this is really,

  748. I found a very interesting dynamic,

  749. because you know what Paul's saying?

  750. Remember,

  751. this has been a few weeks

  752. after he left,

  753. and he says,

  754. we're already getting reports

  755. from all over

  756. about what took place

  757. and the lives

  758. that were changed

  759. at Thessalonica.

  760. Now,

  761. to understand that a little bit,

  762. I want you to understand

  763. Thessalonica was a hub

  764. in the area.

  765. When the Romans conquered Greece,

  766. they divided Greece

  767. into a northern

  768. and southern area.

  769. Those areas we find

  770. mentioned here

  771. Macedonia

  772. and Achaia.

  773. In other words,

  774. what Paul's saying,

  775. he says,

  776. within a few weeks,

  777. these people that came in

  778. to conduct business

  779. and going in and out

  780. and all these things,

  781. he says,

  782. there's reports all over

  783. about what took place

  784. at Thessalonica.

  785. He said,

  786. there's reports about,

  787. man,

  788. there's some change

  789. happening there.

  790. There's something

  791. that took place there.

  792. It was sounded out.

  793. They were as samples.

  794. They were,

  795. somebody said,

  796. they were to be imitated

  797. to say,

  798. hey,

  799. this is a result

  800. of our salvation.

  801. Things change.

  802. This hub city,

  803. a place of commerce

  804. and government

  805. within the region

  806. would now impact everything.

  807. Notice what it says here

  808. in verse 8.

  809. For from you

  810. sounded out the word

  811. of the Lord,

  812. not only in Macedonia,

  813. but also in every place

  814. your faith to God

  815. word is spread abroad

  816. so that we need not

  817. to speak anything.

  818. You know,

  819. that's quite a product.

  820. People saw something different.

  821. Think about 2 Corinthians 5,

  822. 17,

  823. what the Bible tells us.

  824. It says,

  825. if any man be in Christ,

  826. he is what a new creature.

  827. Old things are passed away.

  828. Behold,

  829. all things are become new.

  830. You know what?

  831. When you get saved,

  832. you become a different product.

  833. Something new

  834. has been produced.

  835. There's a change in your life.

  836. Paul and the others

  837. had heard the report

  838. about what had happened.

  839. This is great to hear

  840. and to see

  841. the change in people's lives

  842. after they've received

  843. the word by faith.

  844. Because this change

  845. will be a new direction

  846. with a new priority.

  847. You know,

  848. look at verse 9.

  849. It says,

  850. for they themselves

  851. show of us

  852. what manner of entering in

  853. we had unto you.

  854. Notice this.

  855. Paul says that

  856. there's something seen

  857. and notice what this,

  858. how you turn to God

  859. from idols

  860. to serve the living

  861. and true God.

  862. They turned to God

  863. from idols

  864. to serve him.

  865. I want you to understand

  866. the gospel,

  867. when you get saved,

  868. ought to change

  869. your priorities.

  870. It ought to change

  871. your worship.

  872. and it ought to change

  873. who you serve.

  874. Those things are important.

  875. Look at verse 10.

  876. And to wait for his son

  877. from heaven

  878. whom he raised

  879. from the dead,

  880. even Jesus,

  881. which delivered us up,

  882. delivered us

  883. from the wrath

  884. to come.

  885. Verse 10 is clear

  886. that your focus

  887. is going to change

  888. because your focus

  889. changes from

  890. what can I get

  891. out of this life now

  892. to about the one

  893. that's going to come.

  894. The one we're looking for

  895. and to wait

  896. for his son

  897. from heaven

  898. whom he raised

  899. from the dead.

  900. You know,

  901. the rest of the book

  902. of Thessalonians

  903. you're going to find

  904. throughout talks

  905. about Jesus

  906. coming

  907. and talks about

  908. eternity.

  909. You know what the reality is?

  910. We ought to be walking

  911. in the light

  912. of eternity.

  913. Walking in the fact

  914. that our motivations

  915. have changed.

  916. We have a newness

  917. in our life

  918. and a different motivation.

  919. Your focus

  920. ought to change.

  921. You ought to have

  922. a new life

  923. with a new eternity,

  924. a confidence

  925. beyond this life

  926. knowing that those

  927. that believe

  928. will not face

  929. the wrath

  930. that is to come.

  931. The wrath

  932. that is to come

  933. is judgment

  934. upon all those

  935. who refuse

  936. the gospel

  937. because God says

  938. sin has to be

  939. accounted for.

  940. There's only two ways

  941. for sin to be

  942. accounted for.

  943. You either take

  944. the penalty

  945. that's due you

  946. or Jesus

  947. what he did

  948. for you

  949. in taking your sin

  950. puts it on your account

  951. because what Christ

  952. has done

  953. was sufficient

  954. to make a paid

  955. and full

  956. on the penalty

  957. of your sin.

  958. No longer a problem.

  959. The penalty

  960. has been removed.

  961. You know,

  962. today

  963. has the gospel

  964. worked

  965. in your life?

  966. What have you done

  967. with the truth

  968. about Jesus Christ?

  969. The fact that

  970. he came

  971. and took upon

  972. himself

  973. the sin

  974. of the whole world.

  975. The fact that

  976. he came

  977. and took upon

  978. himself

  979. my sin

  980. and your sin.

  981. So I want you

  982. to understand

  983. sin's not generic

  984. sin is personal.

  985. And when we

  986. understand

  987. it's not

  988. it's nice to think

  989. Jesus died for sin

  990. that becomes

  991. a kind of abstract.

  992. We need to

  993. understand

  994. that blocked

  995. and grouped

  996. into that

  997. is my sin

  998. and your sin.

  999. That he took it

  1000. and nailed it

  1001. to the cross

  1002. and taking

  1003. its penalty

  1004. upon himself.

  1005. Taking God's

  1006. wrath

  1007. in our place.

  1008. You know,

  1009. John 3.36

  1010. says this,

  1011. He that believeth

  1012. on the Son

  1013. hath everlasting life

  1014. and he that believeth

  1015. not the Son

  1016. shall not see life

  1017. but the wrath

  1018. of God

  1019. abideth

  1020. on him.

  1021. You know,

  1022. this morning

  1023. I want you to

  1024. understand

  1025. salvation is really

  1026. boils down to this.

  1027. Does God's wrath

  1028. still abide upon you

  1029. or has Jesus Christ

  1030. taken it?

  1031. What about you

  1032. today?

  1033. What have you done

  1034. with the gospel?

  1035. Is it just information

  1036. or is it effectual

1037. to say that he took

  1038. my sin

  1039. upon him?

  1040. I need to call

  1041. upon him.

  1042. His heads are bowed

  1043. and eyes are closed

  1044. this morning.

1045. We just take a few moments.

  1046. Maybe you're not sure

  1047. today about where

  1048. you stand

  1049. with the Lord.

  1050. Maybe you've heard

  1051. the gospel many times.

  1052. You know the information

  1053. but have you taken

  1054. that information

  1055. personally?

  1056. Is the Holy Spirit

  1057. speaking to you today?

  1058. Has there been

  1059. that moment in time

  1060. when you recognized

  1061. you were a sinner

  1062. and said,

  1063. Lord,

  1064. I'm not placing

  1065. my trust in anything

  1066. else but your promise

  1067. of what you've done

  1068. for me?

  1069. If there's never been

  1070. a moment like that,

  1071. I encourage you today

  1072. that today would be

  1073. the day you'd call

  1074. upon him.

  1075. There's no greater

  1076. day than the day

  1077. that you know

  1078. that God's wrath

  1079. has been removed.

  1080. It's no longer

  1081. upon you.

  1082. What about you

  1083. today?
