"Communion of Love" - Feast of the Most Holy Trinity Homily

Happy Father's Day to all our fathers and grandfathers, godfathers.

Of course, it means I have to tell dad jokes.

Why was dad kicked out of the bakery?

Because he kept telling crummy jokes.

Why did dad cross the road to tell a joke on the other side?

What is dad's favorite type of music?

Pop music, obviously.

Why was the dad staring at orange juice?

Because it said concentrate.

How do you know a joke is a dad joke?

It becomes apparent.

These are dad jokes, folks.

These are best I could find, I'll be here all week.

Faithful dads are here all week and every week going back to the start of their child's life.

And thus imitating God, the Father.

We hear in the first reading about wisdom being there from the beginning, with God, even before creation.

But at the start of creation, we hear about the Trinity.

Genesis chapter 1, God said, let us.

Genesis 1 · chapter mention

Make man in our image.

That's plural, there's a three person to the Trinity speaking, making man male and female like himself.

He's three in one.

He makes man two in one.

God is three persons, one love.

I know it's totally complex, even getting through the prayers of the day is like tough for the priest, because it's just so much language.

It's like, speak English.

But one basic truth to keep mind on this feast of the Most Holy Trinity is God is always there.

He's always been there, He always will be there, Father, Son and Spirit.

Now to get into the complexity, the Church will use analogies.

My favorite is the human family.

that father, mother, child reflect father, son, and spirit.

Again, going back to Genesis and understanding that what we're made for.

The Church calls it a communion of love, community within the Trinity.

Three persons, one love.

creates us to be united in love, like Him.

And the Father and the Son have infinite love for each other.

Overflowing can't be contained or limited love.

Picture pouring, if you're pouring coffee in a cup and it's overflowing, that's their love.

That overflow of love is actually generating a third person, divine person, the Holy Spirit.

Their love is a whole other person.

So it is between uh husband and wife.

Their love cannot be contained.

That overflow is creating a person, a baby.

So every child is the fruit of his or her parent's love.

That overflow is...

From them, it's creating a person.

That's what God creates us for.

Because right after this depiction or description or God announcing why He's creating man, male and female, and why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife and

two become one flesh, like God, He is one.

Super high level for our married couples, for our engaged couples to think about a wedding day.

with all the details and all the pizzazz, that moment of uniting husband and wife, you are then most reflecting God in the heart of him, the heart of the Trinity.

We can't explain it, we can't understand it.

Well, we can try to explain it, but we can't understand it.

That's what he calls human beings too.

And a few lines later he said it's not right for man to be alone.

He creates us for community, communion, not isolation.

And if we really want to image and reflect Him, it's together.

So when we have communion at Mass, it's not just receiving the Eucharist, as paramount as that is.

It's being one with God and each other.

That's the point of all this life, the of creation.

To be united,

for communion and love.

And so hopefully a good experience in marriage and the family, this is an easy leap.

For some of you it is not.

For many of you it is not.

On behalf of Church, I'm deeply sorry.

We know that we have problems in marriage and family.

But when it's strong, it's an experience of the kingdom and what God intends for us.

For this life and forever.
