  1. And so we're going to look here tonight as we look here in 2 Kings chapter 18.

    2 Kings 18 chapter mention

  2. Let's look down at verse 5 here tonight.

  3. And we see here with Hezekiah, it says this,

  4. He trusted in the Lord God of Israel, so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah,

  5. nor any that were before him.

  6. For he claimed to the Lord and departed not from following him,

  7. but kept his commandments, which the Lord commanded Moses.

  8. And the Lord was with him, and he prospered with us, whoever he went.

  9. And he rebelled against the king of Assyria, and served him not.

  10. And he smote the Philistines, even unto Gaza and the borders thereof,

  11. from the tower of the watchmen to the fenced cities.

  12. Let's pray.

  13. Heavenly Fathers, we come before you tonight.

  14. Lord, we're just thankful for your word.

  15. We're thankful that these things are given to us for our learning and for understanding.

  16. Lord, help us to learn and to draw closer to you and to understand,

  17. even as we look at Hezekiah's revival here tonight.

  18. Lord, I pray that you just would stir our hearts to realize the importance

  19. of what is revival, what is those things that you would desire of us.

  20. And Lord, we pray that you would work mightily

  21. and just encourage hearts here tonight.

  22. In Jesus' name, amen.

  23. You know, we see here that here's Hezekiah.

  24. We know that he trusted in the Lord and sought to follow him with his whole heart

  25. so that the Lord was with him, the Bible tells us.

  26. You know, you think about it.

  27. That's quite a testimony when Scripture tells you that God is with you

  28. because of you serving him.

  29. And we see that, you know, Jeremiah 17 tells us this.

  30. It says,

  31. Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, whose hope the Lord is.

  32. You know, to be blessed of God is to put your trust in him,

  33. to trust him on the things, the small things, but the big things.

  34. Also, especially as we walk through life.

  35. But Hezekiah's desire, we know, as we looked last week, was to please the Lord.

  36. It was a drastic transition from his father who was against God,

  37. wanted everything but God.

  38. And then we have Hezekiah, his son, take over,

  39. and everything is 180 degrees the other direction.

  40. I mean, there is an absolute turning in the nation of Israel.

  41. And the first thing he does, he opens the door of the house of the Lord.

  42. You know, he opens back up the temple.

  43. That's his first action as king.

  44. It tells us as he opens the door of the temple,

  45. gets the priests and the Levites together,

  46. tells them to prepare themselves and to clean out the house of God

  47. and to get it ready to worship the Lord.

  48. You know, that was his primary focus right at the very beginning.

  49. And we spoke about that a little last week,

  50. and we saw there the challenge was not just to prepare the house of the Lord.

  51. I want you to understand, he didn't just say, get a building ready.

  52. He said, prepare the people to worship the Lord.

  53. Because ultimately that is the reality.

  54. We ought to be a prepared people to worship the Lord.

  55. You know, as we see, Hezekiah comes out with this challenge right off the get-go.

  56. You know, and so I think it's important to consider

  57. because sometimes when you see such a drastic contrast

  58. because you have his father Ahaz, who's totally against God,

  59. and now we have Hezekiah show up on the scene,

  60. and he is like giving instruction to the priests about how things ought to be done.

  61. You know, it's kind of like this total 180-degree turn,

  62. and we might say and ask ourselves, which I think is a good question,

  63. where did Hezekiah learn this?

  64. You know, where did Hezekiah know all this information?

  65. Well, you know, when he led such an abrupt change,

  66. we need to know that he knew it before it began.

  67. Before he became king, he already had some things in place,

  68. and his relationship with God had already been established.

  69. But we know that one of the things that a king was supposed to do,

  70. if you remember, turn back to Deuteronomy chapter 17,

    Deuteronomy 17 chapter mention

  71. because it's one thing we always can realize when it comes to the Word of God,

  72. God already has things under control.

  73. You know, we find here in Deuteronomy, before they even had a king,

  74. before the discussion even came up,

  75. you find in Deuteronomy chapter 17, look down in verse 18,

    Deuteronomy 17 chapter mention

  76. it says this,

  77. And it shall be when he sitteth upon the throne of his kingdom,

  78. that he shall write him a copy of this law in the book,

  79. out of which is before the priests and the Levites.

  80. So what's the new king supposed to do?

  81. He's supposed to do what?

  82. He's supposed to make his own personal copy

  83. of the law of Moses.

  84. He's supposed to make his own copy of the Psalms.

  85. He's supposed to make his own copy of the prophets

  86. that they had up to that point.

  87. You know, he's supposed to hand write that out, you know.

  88. There's something about that today,

  89. and it's been proven that when you write something

  90. or you copy something, you know what?

  91. It sticks with you a little better.

  92. You know, when you write something down,

  93. and I think that's one thing sometimes we miss in our digital age,

  94. because there's something different about doing this

  95. than actually writing.

  96. To make a connection, it's like there's a connection

  97. between your fingers and your brain.

  98. You know, to actually write things down makes a difference.

  99. And notice verse 19 in Deuteronomy.

  100. It says,

  101. And it shall be with him,

  102. and he shall read therein all the days of his life

  103. that he may learn to fear the Lord his God,

  104. to keep all the words of this law and these statutes to do them,

  105. that his heart be not lifted above his brethren,

  106. that he turn not aside from the commandment

  107. to the right hand or to the left or to the end,

  108. that he may prolong his days in his kingdom,

  109. he and his children in the midst of Israel.

  110. And so I think that how he knew,

  111. he'd already written his copy,

  112. because he knew he was one day going to be king.

  113. I think he'd already taken time.

  114. He was 25 years old.

  115. He had already taken time to learn

  116. and to understand what was his responsibility.

  117. He had already sought through,

  118. because when we look here tonight,

  119. I want you to see he's not just asking the priests

  120. of what they should do and the Levites.

  121. He's instructing them to,

  122. Guys, you should already know this.

  123. In other words, he's speaking from a place of authority,

  124. not of himself, but from the Word of God,

  125. because if anybody should have known what to do,

  126. the priests and the Levites should have known what to do.

  127. They were the ones supposed to be teaching the people what to do.

  128. And so we see that he was encouraging them with that.

  129. And so we see here,

  130. as the house of the Lord was once again sanctified,

  131. it was a day that rivaled even the dedication of the temple by Solomon,

  132. as we'll read a little later.

  133. This was something that hadn't happened in Israel for hundreds of years,

  134. is what took place here with Hezekiah.

  135. Because what took place was a true revival.

  136. There's something that happened.

  137. Take a look.

  138. Turn over to 2 Chronicles chapter 29.

    2 Chronicles 29 chapter mention

  139. 2 Chronicles chapter 29.

    2 Chronicles 29 chapter mention

  140. And we see here, this is Hezekiah,

  141. and this is the same, this is a parallel passage.

  142. They give you different information about what went on.

  143. And Chronicles mainly gives us information about this revival

  144. that took place in the first few months of Hezekiah's reign.

  145. Right off the get-go, there's something that took place.

  146. Look at verse 19 with us tonight.

  147. It says,

  148. Moreover, all the vessels which King Ahaz in his reign did cast away in his transgression,

  149. have we prepared and sanctified, and behold, they are before the altar of the Lord.

  150. Now notice, what's that report that he got?

  151. Hezekiah gets the report from the priests and the Levites,

  152. Hey, we've cleaned out God's house, all the junk that was in there,

  153. and we've restored all the vessels, all the things that your father Ahaz had destroyed.

  154. He said,

  155. We got everything in the house of God back in place.

  156. He said,

  157. These things are all ready to go.

  158. And now look at verse 20.

  159. Notice what happens here.

  160. Then Hezekiah the king rose early and gathered the rulers of the city

  161. and went up to the house of the Lord.

  162. And they brought seven bullocks and seven rams and seven lambs and seven he goats

  163. for a sin offering for the kingdom and for the sanctuary and for Judah.

  164. And he commanded the priests, the sons of Aaron,

  165. to offer them on the altar of the Lord.

  166. So they killed the bullocks,

  167. and the priests received the blood and sprinkled it on the altar.

  168. Likewise, when they had killed the ram,

  169. they sprinkled the blood upon the altar,

  170. and they killed also the lambs,

  171. and they sprinkled the blood upon the altar.

  172. And they brought forth the he goats for the sin offering before the king

  173. and the congregation.

  174. They laid their hands on them,

  175. and the priests killed them

  176. and made them reconciliation with their blood upon the altar

  177. to make atonement for all Israel.

  178. For the king commanded that the burnt offering

  179. and the sin offering should be made for all Israel.

  180. Now I want you to see something here.

  181. Here's Hezekiah.

  182. He comes and says,

  183. Hey, if everything's ready,

  184. we're going to sanctify God's house.

  185. We're going to set God's house apart.

  186. And if you want to make a side note while you're writing things,

  187. you can go back and read the first seven chapters of Leviticus,

  188. because that describes what he's telling.

  189. This is where Hezekiah gets all this information

  190. of what they're supposed to be doing,

  191. how they're supposed to be doing it,

  192. and why they're supposed to be doing it.

  193. He's saying,

  194. Hey, guys, Leviticus chapters 1 through 7

    Leviticus 1 chapter mention

  195. tells us what we ought to be doing.

  196. So I want you to see here

  197. that the king is not just making things up.

  198. He says,

  199. Hey, this is what God has told us to do.

  200. You know, one of the things about true revival,

  201. it's based on what God has said.

  202. True revival is always built upon,

  203. Thus saith the Lord.

  204. It's not built upon emotion.

  205. It's not built upon just feelings.

  206. It's not built on just actions.

  207. It's built on, Thus saith the Lord.

  208. And that's important to understand,

  209. because we see here that the heart of Hezekiah

  210. was that for the burnt offerings and the sin offerings.

  211. They were to be made.

  212. Now notice this,

  213. because if you read through this,

  214. sometimes you miss what's going on here.

  215. He's the king of Judah,

  216. but who's he offering these sacrifices for?

  217. All Israel.

  218. In other words, he says,

  219. Even our brethren that have departed from the Lord,

  220. up in Samaria, he says,

  221. they need to return to the Lord too.

  222. And we're going to see that play out

  223. in Hezekiah's revival

  224. and the change that took place

  225. because he wasn't just worried about

  226. what was happening in Judah.

  227. He was worried about what was happening

  228. with the others in Israel.

  229. He was worried about it.

  230. He says,

  231. I want to make a sin offering

  232. before the Lord

  233. on behalf of all these.

  234. And we see this happen.

  235. Now notice verse 25,

  236. And he set the Levites

  237. in the house

  238. of the Lord

  239. with cymbals and psaltery

  240. and with harps

  241. according to the commandment of David

  242. and of Gad the king Seer

  243. and Nathan the prophet.

  244. And so was the commandment

  245. of the Lord

  246. by his prophets.

  247. Now notice here

  248. something important.

  249. He didn't just say,

  250. Hey, there's a music I want.

  251. He set the music in the church

  252. according to what God said.

  253. In other words,

  254. he said we're going to do it

  255. how God had instructed

  256. from the prophets

  257. to accomplish that

  258. because how we do music

  259. is important.

  260. You know,

  261. I want you to understand

  262. it's a critical thing

  263. and we're not going to get

  264. sidetracked and rabbit trailed

  265. into that tonight

  266. because we're talking about Hezekiah.

  267. We'll save that lesson

  268. for another day.

  269. All right.

  270. But I want you to understand

  271. he made this decision.

  272. What did he base it on?

  273. The word of God.

  274. He didn't base it on public opinion

  275. or what was popular.

  276. He said let's go to the word of God

  277. and see what God says about it

  278. to base it upon the things of God.

  279. And so we see here

  280. as he was there

  281. it was not for personal enjoyment

  282. of the people.

  283. You know,

  284. one of the things today with music

  285. sometimes people think

  286. well I come to church

  287. I want to hear what I want to hear.

  288. I want to grab a hold of

  289. what I want to grab a hold of.

  290. But you know,

  291. when we have music in church

  292. it's not for our benefit.

  293. The music in the Lord's house

  294. ought to be to glorify the Lord

  295. and to move people

  296. and to focus their attention

  297. upon the things of God.

  298. It's not a concert

  299. but a focus

  300. upon the Lord.

  301. And we see this

  302. as we look on down through

  303. look at verse 28

  304. and it says

  305. all the congregation did what?

  306. Worshiped.

  307. And the singers sang

  308. and the trumpets sounded

  309. and all they continued

  310. until the burnt offering

  311. was finished.

  312. We see this

  313. that they were there

  314. worshiping the Lord.

  315. Now I want you to understand

  316. I'll just make this statement

  317. you can sing

  318. and not worship the Lord.

  319. You can sing about God

  320. and not worship the Lord.

  321. Worship

  322. if you notice

  323. happened first

  324. because worship

  325. is a position

  326. of our heart

  327. towards God

  328. before the music

  329. came about.

  330. The music

  331. was an expression

  332. of what was already present.

  333. And we need to understand

  334. because as we look down through

  335. look at verse 35

  336. here in this passage

  337. and it says

  338. and also the burnt offerings

  339. were in abundance

  340. and the fat of the peace offering

  341. and the drink offerings

  342. were for every burnt offering.

  343. Now notice this

  344. so the service

  345. of the house of the Lord

  346. was what?

  347. Set in order.

  348. You know

  349. before Hezekiah

  350. went and got everybody

  351. he says

  352. who's here

  353. and the temple

  354. needed to be sanctified

  355. and prepared

  356. for what was to come.

  357. He said

  358. the sanctification

  359. of the temple

  360. nothing else

  361. could happen

  362. until that was set

  363. in order.

  364. Just as they had

  365. under Moses.

  366. Remember

  367. they had to build

  368. the tabernacle

  369. and everything

  370. before those things

  371. could be set

  372. in order

  373. and prepared

  374. for the things

  375. for them to come

  376. and to offer

  377. their offerings

  378. before the Lord.

  379. They were sanctified

  380. they were set apart

  381. and it was set

  382. in order.

  383. In other words

  384. the Lord's house

  385. was ready

  386. because what

  387. was Hezekiah's plan?

  388. Because we're going

  389. to see now

  390. the preparation

  391. of the people.

  392. We've seen

  393. the preparation

  394. of the house of God

  395. and then we're going

  396. to see the preparation

  397. of the people.

  398. So King Hezekiah

  399. would stir

  400. a revival

  401. among the people

  402. of Judah

  403. along with those

  404. from the northern kingdom.

  405. Look here

  406. chapter 30.

  407. Notice what it says

  408. and Hezekiah

  409. sent all Israel

  410. and Judah

  411. and wrote letters

  412. to Ephraim

  413. and Manasseh

  414. that they should

  415. come to the house

  416. of the Lord

  417. at Jerusalem

  418. to keep the Passover

  419. unto the Lord

  420. God of Israel.

  421. For the king

  422. had taken counsel

  423. and his princes

  424. and for all

  425. the congregation

  426. of Jerusalem

  427. to keep the Passover

  428. in the second month.

  429. All right

  430. so now we see

  431. something here

  432. because

  433. the Passover

  434. had not been

  435. celebrated

  436. according to

  437. the word of God

  438. in many years.

  439. It doesn't tell us

  440. how long here

  441. but it says now

  442. that they're going

  443. to celebrate it

  444. in the second month.

  445. Now here's your

  446. Bible trivia.

  447. What stands out

  448. in that statement?

  449. The second month

  450. because what month

  451. were they supposed

  452. to celebrate the Passover?

  453. First month.

  454. That gets a good question

  455. doesn't it?

  456. You know what?

  457. The Bible answers it for us.

  458. How did the king

  459. change that?

  460. And we'll look at that

  461. here in just a little bit

  462. but I want you to see here

  463. that this hadn't been

  464. celebrated

  465. in a long time.

  466. Notice verse 5

  467. of chapter 30.

  468. Notice what it says here

  469. and it says

  470. and so they established

  471. a decree

  472. to make a proclamation

  473. throughout all Israel

  474. and from Beersheba

  475. even to Dan

  476. that they should come

  477. to keep the Passover

  478. unto the Lord God

  479. of Israel

  480. of Jerusalem

  481. for they had not

  482. done it of a long time

  483. in such sort

  484. as it was written.

  485. You know that's

  486. important to realize

  487. it wasn't that people

  488. didn't desire to

  489. but you know

  490. to keep the Passover

  491. properly required

  492. the temple

  493. to be operating

  494. because in the Passover

  495. one of the things

  496. they did

  497. if you remember

  498. even as you think

  499. about when Jesus

  500. went to Jerusalem

  501. as our Passover lamb

  502. what was taking place

  503. each family

  504. would take a lamb

  505. to the priest

  506. the priest

  507. would lay hands on it

  508. they would kill the lamb

  509. and that blood

  510. would be a covering

  511. for sin

  512. and it took place

  513. in the temple

  514. or the tabernacle

  515. so if the tabernacle

  516. the house of the Lord

  517. wasn't operating

  518. it would be very difficult

  519. to do it according

  520. to all that God

  521. had instructed

  522. even if an individual

  523. wanted to

  524. and had a desire

  525. for God

  526. there were still

  527. limitations

  528. you know

  529. I want you to

  530. to understand

  531. what's happening here

  532. and we see

  533. it wasn't according

  534. given by Moses

  535. but as the house

  536. of the Lord

  537. was there

  538. it was a place

  539. and people

  540. that were required

  541. to be used

  542. the priests

  543. and the people

  544. had to be

  545. together

  546. you know

  547. notice verse 3

  548. of chapter 30

  549. it says

  550. for they could not

  551. keep it at that time

  552. because the priests

  553. had what

  554. not sanctified themselves

  555. sufficiently

  556. because neither

  557. had the people

  558. gathered themselves

  559. together

  560. to Jerusalem

  561. in other words

  562. there had to be

  563. some preparation

  564. for it to take place

  565. there's some individuals

  566. that needed some preparation

  567. but you know

  568. as we have talked

  569. about a little earlier

  570. about why did they

  571. choose the second month

  572. throw over to

  573. Numbers chapter 9

    Numbers 9 chapter mention

  574. for a moment

  575. you know

  576. as I want you to understand

  577. Hezekiah didn't just

  578. make this up

  579. if he's trying

  580. to follow the Lord

  581. he's saying

  582. do we have to wait

  583. till next year

  584. you know

  585. what's going on

  586. Numbers chapter 9

    Numbers 9 chapter mention

  587. look at verse 10

  588. who's got that one

  589. we'll get some people

  590. involved tonight

  591. got that

  592. Ethan

  593. or

  594. can you read that

  595. for me

  596. verses 10 and 11

  597. okay so

  598. the Lord had already

  599. made provision

  600. he says

  601. if you can't be

  602. sanctified

  603. to do it

  604. he said

  605. we're going to have

  606. a secondary option

  607. for you

  608. if that's necessary

  609. so we see here

  610. that where did

  611. Hezekiah get this

  612. he got his instruction

  613. from the word

  614. of the Lord

  615. in other words

  616. he didn't just

  617. change God's plan

  618. he said

  619. what did God

  620. have for this

  621. because you got to

  622. remember

  623. it's also very practical

  624. because notice

  625. what's the first

  626. exception that was

  627. made there

  628. in Numbers chapter 9

    Numbers 9 chapter mention

  629. if they were

  630. they touched what

  631. a dead body

  632. now I want you

  633. to understand

  634. in ancient times

  635. death wasn't as

  636. clean as it is

  637. today

  638. you know

  639. where somebody

  640. dies and the

  641. caretaker comes

  642. and he

  643. you know

  644. and takes them

  645. over to the

  646. funeral home

  647. and deals with

  648. everything

  649. and you show up

  650. and you make sure

  651. everything's doing

  652. the way it's

  653. supposed to be

  654. done

  655. I want you

  656. to understand

  657. in those days

  658. if you had a

  659. family member

  660. die

  661. it was your

  662. responsibility

  663. to go take

  664. care of it

  665. if they touched

  666. a dead body

  667. they had to be

  668. unclean for

  669. seven days

  670. so if that

  671. happened at the

  672. wrong time

  673. what happens

  674. you couldn't

  675. do anything

  676. to be sanctified

  677. in order to

  678. perform it

  679. so what did

  680. God do

  681. he says

  682. I'm going to

  683. make a

  684. exception clause

  685. that if it's

  686. impossible for you

  687. because of

  688. distance or

  689. or something

  690. that violates

  691. that you can't

  692. control

  693. I mean you

  694. can't control

  695. when somebody

  696. dies

  697. so I want

  698. you to see

  699. here where did

  700. Hezekiah get

  701. this

  702. the people

  703. hadn't prepared

  704. themselves

  705. and they weren't

  706. in Jerusalem

  707. yet and he

  708. says hey

  709. we're going to

  710. move it to the

  711. second month

  712. because God

  713. already made

  714. provision to do

  715. that if the

  716. people aren't

  717. ready

  718. because it's

  719. important to

  720. understand God

  721. wants a prepared

  722. people if you're

  723. going to come

  724. before the Lord

  725. God wants your

  726. heart prepared to

  727. come before him

  728. we need to

  729. understand that

  730. what does

  731. Hezekiah do

  732. here this is

  733. as we see

  734. Hezekiah as he

  735. gets all this

  736. preparation he

  737. gets all these

  738. things happening

  739. now he sends

  740. letters in those

  741. first six so the

  742. post went with the

  743. letters from the

  744. king and his

  745. princess throughout

  746. all Israel and

  747. Judah and according

  748. to the commandment

  749. of the king saying

  750. you children of

  751. Israel turn again

  752. unto the Lord God

  753. of Abraham Isaac

  754. and Israel and he

  755. will return to the

  756. remnant of you that

  757. are escaped out of

  758. the hand of the

  759. king of Assyria

  760. and be not like your

  761. fathers or like your

  762. brethren which

  763. trespassed against the

  764. Lord God of their

  765. fathers who therefore

  766. gave them up to

  767. desolation as ye see

  768. you know here's

  769. Hezekiah he's sending

  770. a letter he says

  771. guys you caused

  772. your own problem

  773. you know there's a

  774. lot of times in life

  775. we cause our own

  776. problem you know

  777. sometimes we like to

  778. complain about but the

  779. first thing you need to

  780. ask what did I have a

  781. part in causing it

  782. because sometimes in a

  783. lot of times in life we

  784. have a part from our

  785. decision that get us

  786. where we are and we

  787. see here that Hezekiah

  788. tells them they were

  789. separated and dispersed

  790. because they refused to

  791. worship the Lord they

  792. refused those things

  793. notice here he tells

  794. them he sent the

  795. letter from Beersheba to

  796. Dan now to us that

  797. doesn't make much sense

  798. to us I mean we just

  799. hear two cities until

  800. you understand Beersheba

  801. was the farthest south

  802. point in Israel and Dan

  803. is the farthest northern

  804. point in other words

  805. it's a picture that the

  806. whole land received the

  807. letter from the farthest

  808. away both ends they

  809. received the notification

  810. from Hezekiah that what

  811. was going to happen and

  812. they encouraged them to

  813. come by choice you know

  814. he didn't tell them but

  815. he said he tells them what's

  816. going to happen and who

  817. they are and how they're

  818. doing and encourages them

  819. to turn to the Lord now

  820. notice he tells them to do

  821. this of themselves look at

  822. verse 9 it says for if you

  823. turn again to the Lord your

  824. brother and your children

  825. shall find compassion before

  826. them that led them captive

  827. so that they shall come

  828. again into this land for the

  829. Lord your God is gracious and

  830. merciful and will not turn

  831. away his face from you if you

  832. return unto him you know we

  833. see here something important

  834. that takes place because

  835. Hezekiah here sends out this

  836. letter and he tells them he

  837. says hey you guys need to

  838. make a choice to do it

  839. Hezekiah didn't command them

  840. as king to come worship the

  841. Lord he said if you turn he's

  842. telling them what they ought to

  843. do but he's not telling them

  844. that they have to do it because

  845. you know what you cannot force

  846. somebody to worship the Lord you

  847. cannot make somebody obey the

  848. word of God because you can

  849. obey on the outside and be

  850. rebellious on the inside the

  851. right spirit happens within and

  852. and then notice what he calls

  853. them here as they're there I mean

  854. he mentions about them and what

  855. he tells them there with this

  856. because notice the response look

  857. at verse 10 it says so the post

  858. passed from city to city through

  859. the country of Ephraim and

  860. Manasseh even into Zebulun and

  861. notice what that next part says but

  862. they did what how did they receive

  863. it they laughed them to scorn and

  864. mock them and that's the way some

  865. people receive the truth about what

  866. God says they just laugh it off or

  867. mock it but I want you to see the

  868. next one look on down here in verse

  869. 11 nevertheless divers of Asher and

  870. Manasseh and of Zebulun did what

  871. humbled themselves and came to

  872. Jerusalem you know what when you

  873. share the truth of God with

  874. somebody they're going to react one

  875. of two ways they're either going to

  876. reject it or accept it it's the same

  877. back here in the Old Testament as it

  878. is today people are going to either

  879. going to accept truth or reject

  880. truth there's no middle ground

  881. because well we try to like but I

  882. want you to understand the middle

  883. ground is a no you either accept or

  884. reject the truth of God's word there's

  885. no to hee-haw around about it is the

  886. same as saying no because you're saying

  887. I don't believe it believing the word

  888. of God is important and we see here

  889. that he talks here about them being

  890. stiff-necked you know look up in verse

  891. a but be not stiff-necked as your

  892. fathers were but yield yourself unto

  893. the Lord you know people when it

  894. talks about stiff-necked it means

  895. resolved against okay turn back to

  896. second Kings chapter 17 for a minute

    2 Kings 17 chapter mention

  897. because we see here in second Kings

    2 Kings 17 chapter mention

  898. chapter 17 in verse 14 the word of

  899. God tells us this and we see this

  900. connection here with this it says

  901. notwithstanding they would not hear but

  902. hardened their necks like to the neck of

  903. their fathers that did what not believe

  904. in the Lord their God you know the hard

  905. part is we either submit to the things

  906. of God surrender to the things of God or

  907. we rebel against the things of God that's

  908. reason as a New Testament believers in

  909. Jesus Christ things are a little different

  910. but the application still the same take a

  911. look over what Paul says over in Romans

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  912. chapter 6 Romans chapter 6 in verse 13 the

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  913. apostle Paul here is describing working

  914. through what happens at salvation and how

  915. that comes about and what takes place and he

  916. comes to this issue of dealing with whether

  917. you're going to obey the Lord or not dealing

  918. with sin notice what he says in verse 13 he

  919. says neither yield you your members as

  920. instruments of unrighteousness unto sin what's

  921. he saying he's saying you need you're

  922. going to yield to something what are you

  923. going to yield to what are you going to

  924. submit to are you going to be stiff-necked

  925. against the things of God because notice

  926. but yield yourselves unto God as those that

  927. are alive from the dead and your members as

  928. instruments of righteousness unto God what's

  929. he talking about here he's not talking

  930. about making a commitment to God he's

  931. talking about making a surrender to God

  932. yielding means not just committing to

  933. something but surrendering to something

  934. in other words it's taking where you may

  935. have a right and saying I'm going to hold

  936. back or I'm going to stop here I'm going to

  937. use this as a restraint because it's what's

  938. supposed to be and so we see here that

  939. they are very stiff you're going to be

  940. stiff-necked or yielded I mean when it

  941. comes to the things of God that's the two

  942. choices people have because there's

  943. oftentimes people even today get very

  944. stiff-necked about things because they

  945. have ideas of what they think or how

  946. they think it ought to be or what somebody

  947. else has said instead of going back and

  948. say where does it measure out in the

  949. word of God because ultimately we can

  950. all get stiff-necked about things that we

  951. get that we think are so important but we

  952. ought to measure those things not through

  953. how we feel about it but through what

  954. God's word says because when we measure

  955. it through God's word what are we yielding

  956. to yielding to God and not to somebody

  957. else or to our own emotions or thoughts

  958. because it's amazing how many people make

  959. spiritual decisions on how they feel

  960. spiritual decisions based on how you feel

  961. about God's truth is stiff-necked because

  962. it's built upon how you feel and not what

  963. God says but notice here he calls them to

  964. serve the Lord to turn again unto the Lord

  965. and notice something good that he tells

  966. us about God you know the good thing here

  967. is he also he doesn't just call them out

  968. he says hey guys I want you to understand

  969. if you turn back to God God is gracious

  970. God's merciful God desires for you to turn

  971. to him God wants for you to come to him

  972. matter of fact he tells him he will not

  973. turn you away you know that's the same

  974. principle in the New Testament and if you

  975. come to Christ and call upon him he will

  976. not turn you away you know what the great

  977. thing is the God in the Old Testament is

  978. the same God in the New Testament he's

  979. merciful and gracious if you come to him

  980. and we see here this message is received

  981. just like today you know we talked about

  982. some mocked and some laughed why others

  983. did what humbled themselves there was what

  984. they do some were stiff-necked some yielded

  985. to the things of God but see we see then

  986. we see here that the Passover was

  987. celebrated he sends out the letters to

  988. everybody and some start making their way

  989. to Jerusalem and so notice here in verse

  990. 15 of chapter 30 and it says this and then

  991. they killed the Passover on the 14th day of

  992. the second month and the priests and the

  993. Levites were ashamed and sanctified

  994. themselves and brought in the burnt

  995. offerings into the house of the Lord and

  996. they stood in their place after their

  997. manner according to the law Moses the man

  998. of God and the priests sprinkled the blood

  999. which they received at the hand of the

1000. Levites for there were many in the

1001. congregation that were not sanctified

1002. therefore the Levites had the charge of

1003. killing the Passover for everyone that

1004. was not clean to sanctify them unto the

1005. Lord for the multitude of the people even

1006. many of Ephraim and Manasseh and Issachar

1007. and Zebulun had not cleansed themselves

1008. yet did they not eat the Passover

1009. otherwise than it was written but

1010. Hezekiah prayed for them saying Lord

1011. God pardon everyone now I want you to get

1012. the picture here because you got a lot of

1013. people coming to Jerusalem remember he

1014. sends out letters to the far reaches of

1015. even Israel and understand that when these

1016. people came they had not cleansed

1017. themselves according to the law of Moses

1018. now I want you to understand as you read

1019. through this some of this might have been

1020. strictly ignorance they got a call to

1021. return to the Lord but I remember Israel

1022. how long it had been since they had been

1023. observing the Passover up in Samaria

1024. some of the men and women and kids that

1025. come had never even seen it it might have

1026. been something that said just heard in the

1027. distant past that grandma and grandpa might

1028. have done in other words they knew they

1029. wanted to turn to the Lord but they had no

1030. idea what was going on they had not

1031. prepared and sanctify themselves and and

1032. they had not seen or participated in a

1033. Passover since it had been generations

1034. it's important to note that God pardoned them

1035. because notice what happens here when

1036. Hezekiah prays for them it says in the

1037. Lord verse 20 and the Lord hearkened to

1038. Hezekiah and healed the people it's

1039. important to note that God pardoned them

1040. because Hezekiah prayed that God might

1041. pardon them if they prepare their heart to

1042. seek the Lord in other words they came not

1043. knowing only one thing they knew they came

1044. knowing that they wanted to seek the Lord

1045. they knew that this is what they were

1046. supposed to do and they came in ignorance

1047. now turn to Leviticus chapter 5 for a

    Leviticus 5 chapter mention

1048. moment Leviticus chapter 5 in verse 18 now

    Leviticus 5 chapter mention

1049. notice what the Word of God says here in

1050. verse 18 and he shall bring a ram without

1051. blemish out of the flock with thy

1052. estimation for a trespass offering unto

1053. the priest and the priest shall make an

1054. atonement for him concerning what his

1055. what ignorance wherein he erred and

1056. whist it not and it shall be forgiven him you

1057. know I want you to understand Hezekiah was

1058. justified in praying for those that came

1059. from Israel that were ignorant because

1060. you got to understand what's ignorance

1061. ignorance is lack of information you know

1062. what you can't if you're not know to do

  1063. something you can't do it I mean that's

1064. just simple fact isn't it you know you

1065. can't if you don't know to do it it's

1066. impossible for you to do it so God even

1067. made a way for their ignorance to be

1068. covered because of why because they needed

1069. they came with a heart seeking the Lord

1070. and the Lord said hey if you're seeking

1071. me I'm making a way to prepare you for

1072. what you need to do to seek the Lord is

1073. important it wasn't their action it was

1074. their heart towards God that made the

1075. difference because they were yielded they

1076. were humbled before the Lord but now let's

1077. take a look here because as they come and

1078. all this is taking place notice in them

1079. verse 19 that prepareth his heart to seek

1080. God the Lord God of his father so he be

1081. not cleansed according to the purification

1082. of the sanctuary and says the Lord hearkened

1083. unto Hezekiah and healed the people so we see

1084. here Israel the children of Israel of all the

1085. tribes are gathering in and this results in

1086. quite a revival you know revive Hezekiah's

  1087. revival changed people's lives there's a

1088. transformation because I want you to see

1089. here this was not a revival of emotion but

1090. of change you know today we hear a lot

1091. about revival you know you've seen in this

1092. last year you know you'll see clips on the

1093. internet you know little reels of mass

1094. people getting baptized and you know there's

1095. such a great revival here you know they've

1096. been packed in a field house for 48 hours

1097. listening to somebody beat on a drum and

1098. and make some loud noise and they call it

1099. revival you know what I want you to

1100. understand that people calling something

1101. worship or somebody going through an action

1102. doesn't make revival those things somebody

1103. that gets baptized means there's been a

1104. change already in their life I want you

1105. understand when they worship the Lord is

1106. not the music it's the heart that makes

1107. the difference you have a lot of people

1108. that might have songs talk about God but

  1109. that's not worship

1110. I want you to understand you can sing some

1111. of the old hymns are good good songs but

1112. if you don't sing them with a heart towards

1113. God you know what it's not worship because

1114. your heart is what makes it worship not

1115. the song itself just like people getting

1116. dunked you know I think we have we

1117. shouldn't even call it baptism it's mass

1118. dunkings because baptism actually has a

1119. definition in scripture you can get wet

1120. all the time you want doesn't make a

1121. difference you know we see people get wet

1122. all the time and it doesn't mean anything

1123. you know people do all sorts of things to

1124. try to appease God or they use music to

1125. move people but both these are caught up in

1126. emotion instead of truth because I want you

1127. to understand revival is not measured in

1128. the moment that's one of the other things

1129. I think we miss when it comes to revival

1130. revival is not measured in the moment

1131. revival is measured by what happens

1132. afterwards because when true revival

1133. happens and people turn towards God

1134. there's going to be emotion involved

1135. there's going to be some emotion and

1136. there ought to be if your life's been

1137. changed by Christ there ought to be some

1138. emotion attached to it but what happens

1139. later makes a difference this is a two

1140. week revival they had such a good time

1141. the first week and so many things

1142. happened they said let's do it again

1143. next week when you read through the text

1144. it was two weeks of them worshiping the

1145. Lord and getting right with God it talks

1146. about them confessing it talks about them

1147. getting their life straight with God and

1148. revival takes place and you say preacher

1149. how do you know revival took place look at

1150. the next chapter look at chapter 31 because

1151. revival always has results there's

1152. something that happens look at verse

1153. chapter 31 verse 1 it says now when all

1154. this was what finished all Israel that

1155. were present went out of the cities of

1156. Judah and notice what they did they break

1157. the images in pieces and cut down the

1158. groves excuse me threw down the high

1159. places and altars out of Judah and

1160. Benjamin and Ephraim and also Manasseh

1161. until they were utterly destroyed them all

1162. that all the children of Israel returned

1163. every man to his possession under their

1164. own city you know what the proof of the

1165. revival was is what they did when they

1166. went home because what they did they

1167. turned from their idols unto God on

1168. Sunday morning we're talking from first

1169. Thessalonians about how Paul makes

1170. mention of the Thessalonians doing what

1171. turning from their idols unto God you know

1172. these people had a genuine change because

1173. they turned from their idols they took the

1174. things that they were worshiping and got

1175. rid of them and I want you to understand

1176. that they didn't just quit worshiping

1177. because now they're going to worship the

1178. Lord it was a turning from the false

1179. worship of these false gods and I want

1180. you to understand it wasn't just an

1181. intellectual decision but one that caused

1182. them to remove all the idols from before

1183. them I think on their way back home they

1184. started thinking I got this hidden over

1185. here this idol and that idol and they

1186. said we need to get rid of it they need

1187. to deal with it they needed to properly

1188. take care of it to destroy it to put it

1189. away all those who had not prepared

1190. themselves prior to coming to Jerusalem I

1191. think there's a lot but back to Israel

1192. because they'd been up there where they'd

1193. been worshiping all these false gods and

1194. they said on the way home we're going to

1195. take care of this when we get there we're

1196. we're going to get rid of them we're

1197. going to take it out we're going to

1198. destroy them to utterly destroy them

1199. they took their faith in God personally

1200. not just outwardly but it transformed

1201. their heart it changed them as a person

1202. you know Proverbs chapter 10 verse 16 the

    Proverbs 10:16

1203. word of God tells us this the labor of

1204. the righteous tended to life and the

1205. fruit of the wicked to sin you know I

1206. want you to understand that when God

1207. changes you there ought to be a change in

1208. fruit you know think about what Jesus

1209. said over in Luke chapter 6 Luke chapter

Luke 6 chapter mention Luke 6 chapter mention

1210. 6 in verse 43 the word of God tells us

1211. this it says for a good tree bringeth for

1212. bringeth not forth corrupt fruit neither

1213. does a corrupt tree bringeth forth good

1214. fruit for every tree is known by his own

1215. fruit Jesus is simply saying you're going

1216. to produce what you are verse 45 in Luke

1217. he says this a good man out of the good

1218. treasure of his heart bringeth forth that

1219. which is good and an evil man out of the

1220. evil treasure of his heart bring forth

1221. that which is evil for the abundance of

1222. the heart his mouth speaketh you know what

1223. where your heart is is tied to what you do

1224. the decisions you make because we see secondly

1225. here we see a change of thinking concerning the

1226. things of God they didn't just return back to

1227. their old life but to a new one they had a new

1228. desire to follow the Lord directed by his word their

1229. thinking was changed you know when you come to

1230. Christ your thinking ought to change

1231. go over to Galatians for a moment Galatians chapter 5

    Galatians 5 chapter mention

1232. Galatians chapter 5 and look down at verse 24

    Galatians 5 chapter mention

1233. who's got that one for me tonight

1234. everybody's kind of lagging here

1235. got somebody read that one for me read that April

  1236. verse 25 also please

1237. so what do we need to do we need to do what walk in

1238. the spirit it is a change that takes place we've

1239. crucified the flesh with the affections and

1240. lust if we live in the spirit let us do what walk in

1241. the spirit this parallels over look at Romans

    Romans 12 chapter mention

1242. chapter 12 Romans chapter 12 in verse 2 got that

    Romans 12 chapter mention

1243. one Daryl if you would

  1244. yep

1245. okay I want you to understand here there was a

1246. difference that was made their lives changed

1247. completely things were different their thinking

1248. changed and the things we're going to see that

1249. play out here in this chapter because

1250. Hezekiah we're going to see here also

1251. appointed look at verse 2 of chapter 31 it says

1252. Hezekiah appointed the courses of the priests and

1253. Levites after their courses every man according to his

1254. service the priests and Levites for burnt offering for

1255. peace offering to minister and to give thanks and

1256. to praise in the gates of the tents of the Lord and he

1257. appointed also the king's portion of his substance for

1258. the burnt offering to wit for the morning and evening

1259. burnt offering for the burnt offering for the

1260. Sabbath and for the new moons and for the set feast it is written in the law of the Lord

1261. moreover he commanded the people that dwelt in Jerusalem give a portion of the

1262. priests and the Levites that they might be encouraged in the law of the Lord I want

1263. to see here the Hezekiah sets up and says priest you need to get sanctified and do what you want to do but the people did something accordingly also and we're going to see here as we look through chapter 31 you're going to see God's people began to give

1264. they began to give to the things God had instructed them to give they began to give if you read through we don't have time tonight but you can go home and read through the rest of 31 it talks about the heaps were so big they had to figure out what they were going to do with the offerings because not just in Jerusalem even from Israel they were sending things back and you say preacher what how does that play out I want you to understand your heart and your pocketbook are connected think about what Jesus says look over to Matthew chapter 6

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

1265. 6 Matthew chapter 6 look down at verse 21 you got that one Josiah Matthew 6 21

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

1266. okay when Jesus said that what's he telling us there's what a connection between what you possess and your heart there's a connection there a little later in verse 24 could you read that one for me there Josiah verse 24 same chapter since you're already there chapter 6

1267. okay Jesus continues with that same thought isn't it because you're gonna have to choose who you serve and the results were seen in what they did look down in verse 9 of this chapter

  1268. it says then Hezekiah

1269. and the chief priest comes out and says hey people are bringing so much stuff we don't have a place to put it you know what I want you to understand what it tells us is is there was a true revival because the people's attitudes changed

1270. they said we're gonna give what God has instructed them to give

1271. you need to keep in mind Israel was instructed in the law of exactly what they were supposed to give and when they were to give it matter of fact we talk about tithing if you add up all they were to give in the Old Testament it's about 30%

1272. between to do a quality quality quality quality quality

1273. because what you invest your resources in is where your heart's attached.

1274. If you invest, it's because your heart has an outcome that you're expecting.

1275. I want you to see here there was something very different happening in Judah and throughout Israel.

1276. A new course in word and deed was happening in their lives.

1277. Hezekiah was also willing to follow the Lord and do what he ought to do.

1278. Look down at verse 20 here, and it says,

1279. And thus did Hezekiah throughout all Judah, and wrought that which was good and right and truth before the Lord his God.

1280. And in every work that he began in service of the house of God and in the law and in the commandments to seek his God,

1281. he did it with all his heart and prospered.

1282. Now I want you to see here, you've got to keep in mind this all happened in a few months.

1283. This is the beginning of Hezekiah's reign.

1284. Next week we're going to look at something because, you know what, when we begin to serve the Lord, you know what?

  1285. There's going to be a test.

1286. Do you really serve the Lord for the right reason?

  1287. James tells us this.

1288. It says, James 1.12 says,

1289. Blessed is the man that endureth temptation, for when he is attried, he shall receive the crown of life,

1290. which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.

1291. Next week we're going to take a look because Israel is going to face a test.

1292. Hezekiah is going to face a test.

1293. Do I trust God or not?

1294. You know what, sometimes the same question comes up in our life and decisions that we have to make.

1295. Am I willing to trust God in the difficult things to make the right decision?

1296. We'll look at that next week with Hezekiah.

  1297. Let's pray.
