  1. Well, I appreciate that.

  2. I think giving thanks helps keep our perspective.

  3. ! We have a lot to be thankful for, especially during this time of the year.

  4. ! We have a lot of blessings the Lord has given us.

  5. Frankly, we don't deserve, but He loves us anyway.

  6. Go ahead and turn your Bibles with me to Genesis chapter 26.

    Genesis 26 chapter mention

  7. Going along that theme of blessings in our life.

  8. We have blessings, battles, burdens.

  9. And even though it may not seem fair, I think through Scripture we've seen,

  10. and maybe in your own life you've seen, that blessings bring about those burdens and battles.

  11. I think about Job, all the blessings he had, and he had to be tested.

  12. And I think it's important to understand that God doesn't tempt us.

  13. You know, God tests us.

  14. He tests our faith in Him to see what it's made out of.

  15. And a lot of times, if you have this perspective of, oh, woe is me, why is He doing this?

  16. You've got it backwards.

  17. You know, I even, I test my daughter, Sophia.

  18. I test her obedience.

  19. You know, I test that she'll trust me because I want her to trust me in the little things now.

  20. That way, when she's older, she can trust me on the big things.

  21. You know, she knows that I will be there for her before she falls off the couch.

  22. She knows that I'll be there when she makes a big mistake in the future.

  23. She'll know that she can come and trust me and talk to me.

  24. That's how God wants us to be with Him.

  25. Just trust Him in the little things so that when we can, that way when we come to the big things, we can trust Him.

  26. God is the one that tests us, but Satan likes to tempt us.

  27. And that's not for our good.

  28. That's to distract us, to turn us away from what the Lord has for us.

  29. If you found your place in Genesis 26, we're going to be talking about growing pains and digging wells.

  30. So please stand with me, if you will.

  31. Genesis chapter 26.

    Genesis 26 chapter mention

  32. We'll start reading in verse 17.

  33. It says,

  34. And he went up from thence to Beersheba.

  35. And the Lord appeared unto him the same night and said,

  36. I am the God of Abraham, thy father.

  37. Fear not, for I am with thee, and will bless thee and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham's sake.

  38. And he built in an altar there and called upon the name of the Lord and pitched his tent there.

  39. And there Isaac's servants digged a well.

  40. Dear Heavenly Father, I thank you for this day you've given us.

  41. Lord, I ask that our hearts would just be open to your word today.

  42. Lord, I pray that you would be with my voice and just calm my nerves.

  43. Lord, I ask that despite me that we would glean from your word.

  44. I just thank you for your goodness to us.

  45. And I ask all these things in Jesus' name.

  46. Amen.

  47. You can go ahead and be seated.

  48. I think it's important to look at people in the Bible and see how they navigate the feats and failures of life.

  49. Because we're going to have those same things.

  50. And I think it's important.

  51. Sometimes the way we're brought up, maybe sometimes in Sunday school or your church, it's not the intention.

  52. But sometimes we get this flannel graph board of what the Bible is.

  53. And Isaac is just like you and I.

  54. He's just the guy.

  55. He has the same feelings, the same temptations to sin.

  56. He's not anything superhuman.

  57. None of these characters are except Christ.

  58. And I think it's interesting to see that we can see ourself in them.

  59. And I want to focus a little bit on Isaac.

  60. When you look at Isaac in Scripture, he's one of the patriarchs.

  61. You have Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph.

  62. Isaac kind of gets looked over a lot of the times.

  63. It doesn't seem to be as much exciting stuff in his life.

  64. But I want to focus on some things today about being a well digger.

  65. In Scripture, a lot of times water can be a symbol of a lot of things.

  66. Obviously, living water, new life, and through Jesus Christ.

  67. The water can also be blessings.

  68. And in this Scripture, the blessings had been stopped up by the Philistines.

  69. And I kind of look at that as things in life, like the world, our flesh.

  70. They stopped that access of water to us.

  71. Isaac would understand here, because Abraham and Isaac, they were kind of nomadic people.

  72. They didn't have a fixed place where they lived.

  73. They lived in tents.

  74. They traveled around with their herds.

  75. Water was key to survival.

  76. They needed the water.

  77. And here the enemy has stopped it up.

  78. They're not getting that access that they need.

  79. So Isaac, he received his father's inheritance.

  80. You look with me in our text here, verses 12 through 14.

  81. It says,

  82. Then Isaac sowed in that land, and received in the same year, an hundredfold, and the Lord blessed him.

  83. And the man waxed great, and went forward, and grew until he became very great.

  84. For he had possession of flocks, and possession of herds, and great store of servants, and the Philistines envied him.

  85. So he has this amount of wealth that he's obtained.

  86. In verses 3 through 5, we see not only did he have great wealth, but he also had the covenant promise.

  87. The covenant that was promised even unto Abraham.

  88. Let's look at verses 3 through 5.

  89. It says,

  90. So what's going on here?

  91. That God is telling him this.

  92. Well, there's a famine in the land.

  93. See that in verse 1.

  94. A famine comes up.

  95. It means there's a shortage of food.

  96. How are you supposed to take care of your family, take care of the things that God has blessed you with,

  97. if you can't provide for them?

  98. Not only did Isaac inherit his father's wealth, the covenant blessing,

  99. but we see here, first off, he also inherited his father's temptations.

  100. This is where Isaac is just a man, just like everybody else.

  101. In verse 1 it says,

  102. And there was a famine in the land beside the first famine that was in the days of Abraham.

  103. And Isaac went unto Abimelech, king of the Philistines, unto Gerar.

  104. And the Lord appeared unto him and said,

  105. Go not down into Egypt, well in the land which I shall tell thee of.

  106. I don't know that we'll have time today, but Genesis chapter 12, specifically in verse 10,

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  107. there's a famine in Abraham's time.

  108. And what does he do?

  109. He runs to Egypt.

  110. Isaac, he's tempted to run.

  111. Just go to Egypt.

  112. Follow, you know, man's wisdom.

  113. And go to Egypt where there's going to be food.

  114. God's saying, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.

  115. Trust me.

  116. I'll take care of you.

  117. I'll bless you.

  118. I've already given you that promise.

  119. Trust me.

  120. Sometimes that can be hard, because we look around and we try to do everything in our strength,

  121. and things aren't coming up the way we would think.

  122. If I'm going to be completely transparent with you today,

  123. many of you know Amanda and I were trying to sell our house, get another house,

  124. and we were praying about this house that we saw.

  125. We really liked it.

  126. It was the first one that we were both like, this isn't just a house that we have to move to.

  127. This could be a home.

  128. We were excited.

  129. We prayed about it, and we said, Lord, if this is your will,

  130. we're going to put this offer in and make them accept it immediately.

  131. What happened?

  132. We prayed, put the offer in.

  133. They accepted it immediately.

  134. Praise the Lord.

  135. The Lord is in this.

  136. The only issue was our house is contingent.

  137. We have to sell our current house before we get this house.

  138. And know what happened?

  139. Another offer came in on that house, and they accepted that one.

  140. So boom, we have that 48 hours, and I'm praying, okay, God, I trusted you.

  141. You already proved that you would answer that prayer.

  142. You know, we're doing this.

  143. And we have 48 hours to become noncontingent.

  144. So we're already looking.

  145. Hey, we can do this thing called a bridge loan where we can get the money we're already approved for.

  146. We can buy the house, and then we could sell it later.

  147. Downside.

  148. We might not sell our current house.

  149. Now we're paying two mortgages.

  150. That's not very wise.

  151. The other side is, hey, maybe we just continue to sell our house.

  152. Try to.

  153. And this other house, we're moved it on.

  154. We can't get it now.

  155. So now we're tempted.

  156. Do we continue to keep our house on the market?

  157. But say someone buys this one, and we don't have a place.

  158. Then we're homeless.

  159. So it's like, what's going on?

  160. Well, these are the times you have to trust God.

  161. And in your own might, you feel like, I've got to take this upon myself.

  162. I've got to do what I know to do.

  163. That's what Isaac is thinking.

  164. He's like, I've got a family to take care of.

  165. I know that there's food in Egypt.

  166. I'm going to go that way because my dad did it.

  167. Back in chapter 12, you know, this is what happened.

  168. God says, trust me.

  169. I'm going to take care of you.

  170. He's tempted to run.

  171. You know, we see through scripture, the safest place that we can be in is the will of God.

  172. Trust me, ask Jonah when you get to heaven.

  173. Ask how that worked out for him.

  174. God said, go to Nineveh.

  175. And he said, I don't think so.

  176. And God had to make it all work out to say, you are going to obey me.

  177. And it worked out.

  178. Unbelief asks, how can I get out of this?

  179. Faith asks, what can I get out of this?

  180. Isaac, he was the promised son, Abraham, and he needed to stay in the promised land, which was Canaan.

  181. We don't have a whole lot of time to go through this, but in Genesis chapter 24, Abraham knew the importance of this because he would not let Isaac go and find a wife.

    Genesis 24 chapter mention

  182. He sent his servant.

  183. He said, Isaac needs to stay here.

  184. He's the promised son.

  185. How is my, you know, how is God's covenant promise with me to be able to have multiple, you know, members, his descendants, if there's not a promised son?

  186. So he makes Isaac stay, sends out the servant.

  187. So he's tempted to run.

  188. Secondly, in our chapter here, he's tempted to lie.

  189. Drop down to verse 11.

  190. It says, chapter 12, or I'm sorry, look at verse, let's see here, verse 7.

  191. And the men of the place asked him of his wife, this is Isaac.

  192. And he said, she's my sister, for he feared to say she is my wife, lest said he, the men of the place, should kill him for Rebekah, because she was fair to look upon.

  193. So he comes into the land, he's got this beautiful wife, and here's the deal.

  194. This is my sister.

  195. So don't kill me if you like her, she's just my sister.

  196. Why was he tempted to lie the way he did?

  197. Because he saw his dad do it earlier in chapter 11.

  198. Or chapter 12 of Genesis.

  199. He also, Abraham lied to Abimelech.

  200. Now, Abimelech is a title, just like Pharaoh means king, king is king.

  201. Abimelech is king.

  202. I think it could be very possible it could be the same guy.

  203. Just the study I did on it, the timeline.

  204. Regardless, Abimelech, the king, he sees Rebekah, sees that she's beautiful.

  205. The men of the city, see that she's beautiful.

  206. Isaac lies, says, nope, she's my sister.

  207. And it came to pass in verse 8, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech, king

  208. of the Philistines, looked out a window, and saw, and behold, Isaac was sporting with Rebekah,

  209. his wife.

  210. And Abimelech called Isaac and said, behold, of a surety, she is thy wife.

  211. And how said she is my sister?

  212. And Isaac said unto him, because I said, lest I die for her.

  213. So he sees them acting like husband and wife and says, whoa, whoa, whoa, you guys aren't

  214. brother and sister.

  215. What's going on here?

  216. Why'd you lie?

  217. And he's like, I didn't want to be killed.

  218. And so, verse 10, and Abimelech said, what is this that thou hast done unto us?

  219. One of the people might lightly have aligned with thy wife, and thou shouldst have brought

  220. guiltiness upon us.

  221. And Abimelech charged all his people, saying, he that touches this man or his wife shall

  222. surely be put to death.

  223. And Abimelech said, whoa, whoa, whoa, we don't want to be guilty of anything, because

  224. we know the God that you serve.

  225. Get out of here.

  226. We don't want any problem with you.

  227. You know, again, God is taking care of it.

  228. We try to do things in our own might, try to conjure up these blessings.

  229. God can take care of it.

  230. Isaac was afraid that a pagan king would kill his wife, or kill him to obtain his wife.

  231. And this was the lie, his lie was evidence of his unbelief.

  232. Earlier, if we look back in chapter 25, Genesis chapter 25, verse 21, it says,

    Genesis 25:21

  233. And Isaac entreated the Lord for his wife, because she was barren.

  234. And the Lord was entreated of him, and Rebekah his wife conceived.

  235. So Isaac has a barren wife, and he can't have children.

  236. I know you have problems.

  237. Give us a child.

  238. God says, Isaac had enough faith back then to say, make my barren wife pregnant.

  239. But he was too afraid now to say, watch over my family.

  240. Protect my life.

  241. I don't want to be killed because they're envious of my wife.

  242. Faith means to live without scheming and telling lies.

  243. And that seems to be one of humanity's favorite ways to escape responsibility.

  244. We see it all the way back in the Garden of Eden.

  245. Right?

  246. The blame shifting.

  247. Why did you eat the fruit?

  248. Oh, my wife, Eve, she made me do it.

  249. So then God asked Eve, what's going on?

  250. Oh, I didn't do it.

  251. The serpent made me do it.

  252. The serpent's just standing there like, eh?

  253. You know, you don't blame anybody else.

  254. Blame shifting.

  255. All the way back in the Garden of Eden, it's happened.

  256. He's tempted to lie.

  257. You know, Isaac has a reputation that they're living for the one true God.

  258. Here he is lying to the king, lying to the men.

  259. Verse 12, we see that we already read that he received a hundredfold.

  260. He kind of put roots down in this area, and they're living here.

  261. And the Philistines, they become envious of him.

  262. So we see the temptations.

  263. We also see the task.

  264. Isaac inherited flocks and herds from his father, who had lived that nomadic life.

  265. But now this wealthy heir has settled down, and he's becoming a farmer.

  266. He's going to remain in Gerar for a long time.

  267. I think it's interesting to see Isaac and his neighbors, they had the same access.

  268. The soil, the sun, the rain.

  269. But only Isaac is being blessed.

  270. Why?

  271. Because God is taking care of him.

  272. He's living for the Lord.

  273. It's the same in our life.

  274. God kept his promise and blessed all that Isaac did.

  275. We see that in verses 3 through 5.

  276. God also blessed Isaac because of Abraham's life and his faith.

  277. And this is just how God blesses us for the sake of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  278. Because we've been born again, we're washed under his blood.

  279. He sees that and he blesses us.

  280. First off here in the task, we see the destruction of the wells.

  281. Sometimes blessings bring trials.

  282. It happens.

  283. Isaac has all this stuff.

  284. We've read that he was blessed a hundredfold.

  285. You can't imagine all the animals, the livestock that he's responsible for,

  286. the servants that it would take to upkeep everything.

  287. He's got a lot going on.

  288. And the Philistines in verse 14, it says,

  289. For he had possession of flocks and possession of herd

  290. and a great store of servants in the Philistines.

  291. They envied him.

  292. So what did they do?

  293. They stopped up the wells.

  294. They said,

  295. If you think you're going to come to our land

  296. and lie trying to get us into trouble,

  297. stop up your wells.

  298. Maybe we can starve him out of here and he'll leave.

  299. Sometimes I think about the wells in our lives,

  300. the wells that bring access to blessings.

  301. End up losing.

  302. I was thinking about,

  303. why would you let these wells?

  304. I don't know about you.

  305. I've never had to dig an actual well,

  306. but I used to work for someone who had horses.

  307. And he had this trough about six inches.

  308. It was six feet all the way around.

  309. He had to dig about four feet down.

  310. And I'm telling you,

  311. I'm digging.

  312. Nebraska, it's hard to dig.

  313. About a foot down of the soil,

  314. now you're at clay.

  315. So I'm breaking my back.

  316. And at the time,

  317. we had a guy that was older than I was,

  318. church.

  319. He's complaining the whole time.

  320. And I'm just like,

  321. yeah, you know,

  322. this isn't easy being the only one,

  323. especially when you're sitting there complaining.

  324. It's like,

  325. not like my back hurts any less than yours.

  326. Not like my bald head is catching fire right now.

  327. That in the sun.

  328. But it's backbreaking work.

  329. And what happened was,

  330. Doug and the person who measured it,

  331. was off.

  332. Had to dig again.

  333. I was not happy about that.

  334. That was a lot of work that was wasted.

  335. I can only imagine how Isaac is feeling.

  336. This happens.

  337. But I got to thinking,

  338. why would,

  339. how could you allow that to happen?

  340. And I think the first thing is forfeit.

  341. Maybe he forfeited the wealth.

  342. Forfeit means to kind of render loss.

  343. Sometimes when we let sin into our life,

  344. we forfeit those blessings that could be.

  345. I think about Isaiah chapter 59.

    Isaiah 59 chapter mention

  346. Isaiah chapter 59 verse 2.

    Isaiah 59:2

  347. Some of you are familiar with this.

  348. It says,

  349. but your iniquities have separated

  350. between you and your God

  351. and your sins have hid his face from you

  352. that he will not hear.

  353. When we allow sin into our life,

  354. basically cutting off that fellowship

  355. that we have with God.

  356. You notice it said that it's us

  357. that's the problem.

  358. God is fixed.

  359. He stays where he is.

  360. It's us who stray away.

  361. Forfeit.

  362. Forfeiting the wealth.

  363. Maybe he forgot the importance.

  364. Sometimes in life,

  365. don't we get busy?

  366. I know I do.

  367. Sometimes,

  368. I don't even think that there's anything

  369. necessarily in and of itself wrong with that.

  370. You just get busy.

  371. There's things that need your attention.

  372. And you have to kind of learn to prioritize

  373. and what gets your attention.

  374. But maybe they were too busy with everything else.

  375. They forgot to defend you.

  376. Defend that access of blessing into your life.

  377. Romans chapter 12 says,

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  378. We're not supposed to be so busy.

  379. I've seen that so many times

  380. growing up in church.

  381. Especially,

  382. I've seen it a lot,

  383. mainly with the young people

  384. trying to cater.

  385. Kids got this event going at the school.

  386. Gotta be there for that.

  387. And all these hobbies.

  388. And you start seeing them

  389. less and less in church.

  390. What happened?

  391. They're just getting too busy.

  392. What are you doing?

  393. Setting off that access.

  394. Blessing.

  395. We all want the best for our children.

  396. What's that cost?

  397. What's that going to look like?

  398. What's more important?

  399. Having a relationship with Christ?

  400. Not because they were brought to church by you,

  401. but because they have that of themselves.

  402. They've learned,

  403. Hey, I don't believe in God

  404. just because my parents do.

  405. I don't believe in God

  406. just because I went to church.

  407. But I have a personal,

  408. individual relationship with Christ by myself.

  409. That should be the goal.

  410. Those soccer trophies

  411. get put in a box.

  412. Don't look at them again.

  413. What good does it do?

  414. In the grand scheme of everything,

  415. when we get to heaven,

  416. God isn't going to be impressed

  417. with how long we had a home run,

  418. with our math leak,

  419. you know, stuff.

  420. It doesn't matter.

  421. Doing things for eternity

  422. is what matters to the Lord.

  423. Being faithful is what matters to the Lord.

  424. Maybe they just failed to protect them.

  425. Ephesians chapter 6.

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  426. Maybe they're just a little lazy,

  427. a little apathetic.

  428. They failed to protect them.

  429. Ephesians chapter 6,

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  430. starting in verse 11.

  431. Put on the whole armor of God,

  432. that ye may be able to stand

  433. against the wiles of the devil.

  434. For we will wrestle not

  435. against flesh and blood,

  436. but against principalities,

  437. against powers,

  438. against the rulers of darkness

  439. of this world,

  440. against spiritual wickedness

  441. in high places.

  442. Put on that armor of God.

  443. You have to have your heart right.

  444. When we read about the armor of God,

  445. I think it's interesting

  446. that there's nothing,

  447. there's no protection for your back.

  448. Because we're supposed to be

  449. moving forward.

  450. In the army of God,

  451. there's no retreat.

  452. We're not supposed to be

  453. running backwards.

  454. But sometimes you can get lazy

  455. and apathetic.

  456. That's how sin enters our life,

  457. is we're not guarding ourselves.

  458. I think about all these,

  459. I read a story one time

  460. about this guy,

  461. crazy,

  462. barrel riding,

  463. I think is what they call it,

  464. goes into a barrel

  465. and it goes over Niagara Falls.

  466. Crazy stuff.

  467. And he survives.

  468. So this guy is kind of a daredevil.

  469. And you know how he ended up dying?

  470. He slipped on an orange peel.

  471. Fell, died.

  472. Like, whoa.

  473. It's crazy.

  474. But what was the difference?

  475. For Niagara Falls,

  476. he was prepared.

  477. He was prepared.

  478. He was ready for that.

  479. This orange peel,

  480. he wasn't ready for.

  481. Took him out.

  482. Think about the sins

  483. of great men in the Bible.

  484. So they weren't prepared.

  485. Think about Noah.

  486. What faith Noah had.

  487. He said, hey,

  488. I know it's never rained before,

  489. but at that time the water came out.

  490. The water's going to fall from the sky,

  491. and I need you to build this thing

  492. called a boat.

  493. It's a big boat.

  494. You're going to put a bunch of animals

  495. in this thing.

  496. And I just want you to trust me.

  497. Here's the specs.

  498. Get it done.

  499. 120 years he's building this thing.

  500. And he still has faith.

  501. God told me to do it.

  502. I'm going to do it.

  503. And then it happens.

  504. God closes up the door.

  505. They survive.

  506. But at the end of Noah's life,

  507. you know what we see him as?

  508. Naked.

  509. What happened?

  510. He wasn't prepared.

  511. I think about, you know,

  512. Thomas.

  513. He kind of gets a bad rap.

  514. What do we know him as?

  515. Doubting Thomas.

  516. But Thomas was one of the

  517. disciples of Christ.

  518. Read through scripture.

  519. There's one time where he's like,

  520. hey, are we going to go

  521. and preach to these people?

  522. He was about it.

  523. What happened?

  524. There was one day

  525. he didn't decide

  526. to put on his armor,

  527. and that day caught up with him.

  528. He wasn't where

  529. he was needed to be

  530. because all the other disciples

  531. were present

  532. when Jesus appeared to them.

  533. He wasn't there.

  534. And he said, oh,

  535. I can't believe this.

  536. It was one day

  537. that he wasn't ready.

  538. He failed to protect himself.

  539. He cut that access

  540. of blessing to his life.

  541. Number four,

  542. maybe Isaac figured

  543. that the wells

  544. would always be there.

  545. Don't we get like that?

  546. We just take it for granted.

  547. Turn with me

  548. to Hebrews chapter 12.

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  549. It's always frustrating

  550. turning to the back

  551. of my Bible

  552. because my Bible

  553. is old.

  554. Ages come out.

  555. So if we ever have

  556. a sword drill,

  557. you guys are like,

  558. hey, give me Ethan a chance

  559. and do it in the Old Testament

  560. because the New Testament,

  561. my Bible will fall apart.

  562. Hebrews chapter 12,

    Hebrews 12:5

  563. verse 5,

  564. and ye have forgotten

  565. the exhortation

  566. which speaketh unto you

  567. as unto children.

  568. My son,

  569. despise not the chastening

  570. of the Lord,

  571. faint when thou art

  572. rebuked of him.

  573. For whom the Lord loveth,

  574. he chasteneth

  575. and scourges every son

  576. whom he receiveth.

  577. If ye endure chastening,

  578. God dealeth with you

  579. as with sons.

  580. For what son is whom

  581. the Father chasteneth not?

  582. But if ye be without

  583. chastisement,

  584. whereof all are partakers,

  585. then are ye bastards

  586. and not sons.

  587. Furthermore,

  588. we have had fathers

  589. of our flesh

  590. which corrected us

  591. and we gave them reverence,

  592. shall we not much rather

  593. be in subjection

  594. unto the Father

  595. of spirits and live?

  596. For they verily

  597. for a few days

  598. chastened us

  599. after their own pleasure,

  600. but he for our profit

  601. that we might be partakers

  602. of his holiness.

  603. Now no chastening

  604. for the present

  605. seemeth to be joyous,

  606. but grievous.

  607. Nevertheless,

  608. afterward,

  609. it yieldeth

  610. the peaceable fruit

  611. of righteousness

  612. unto them

  613. which are exercised thereby.

  614. True faith

  615. is always tested

  616. either by temptation

  617. within us

  618. or trials around us

  619. because a faith

  620. that can't be tested

  621. can't be trusted.

  622. That's the destruction

  623. of the wells.

  624. But then we see

  625. the digging of the wells,

  626. the real chore here.

  627. Starting in verse,

  628. let's see here.

  629. We'll see verse 18.

  630. And Isaac digged again

  631. the wells of water

  632. which they had digged

  633. in the days of Abraham

  634. his father,

  635. for the Philistines

  636. had stopped them

  637. after the death

  638. of Abraham

  639. and he called their names

  640. after the names

  641. by which his father

  642. had called them.

  643. And Isaac's servants

  644. digged in the valley

  645. and found there

  646. a well of springing water.

  647. And the herdmen

  648. of Gerard

  649. did strive

  650. with Isaac's herdsmen

  651. saying,

  652. the water is ours.

  653. And he called the name

  654. of the well Essek

  655. because they strove

  656. with him.

  657. That word Essek

  658. means strife.

  659. He shows up,

  660. they re-dug the well,

  661. now the Philistines

  662. are like,

  663. uh,

  664. that's our well.

  665. You can find your own.

  666. Uh,

  667. alright,

  668. not gonna,

  669. so,

  670. they move on,

  671. verse 21,

  672. and they digged

  673. another well

  674. and strove for that

  675. also.

  676. And he called

  677. the name of it

  678. Sitna.

  679. That means contention.

  680. Again,

  681. they show up

  682. and they're like,

  683. hey,

  684. this is our well.

  685. Go find your own.

  686. Alright.

  687. And he moved

  688. from thence

  689. and digged

  690. another well

  691. and for that

  692. they strove not.

  693. And he called

  694. the name of it

  695. Rehoboth.

  696. That means roominess.

  697. It says,

  698. for now the Lord

  699. hath made room

  700. for us

  701. and we shall be

  702. fruitful in the land,

  703. digging of the wells.

  704. It's important

  705. to understand

  706. when I was in Bible college,

  707. one thing I really

  708. appreciated

  709. was he would say

  710. thank you,

  711. he would say this,

  712. pray like it depends

  713. on God

  714. and work like it

  715. depends on you.

  716. And I think that was

  717. really good

  718. because sometimes

  719. it's easy to just

  720. sit there

  721. pray.

  722. When I was praying

  723. for a wife,

  724. how ridiculous

  725. would it have been

  726. if I just stayed home

  727. all the time

  728. and just prayed,

  729. alright God,

  730. bring a wife to me.

  731. Like she's supposed to

  732. just knock on the door.

  733. No,

  734. it's not going to happen

  735. like that.

  736. You know,

  737. there had to be

  738. some work there.

  739. I remember

  740. it wasn't ideal,

  741. you know,

  742. you want to

  743. do things on your own

  744. and you just

  745. meet somebody.

  746. That's not how

  747. the Lord in my

  748. had it.

  749. Brought some friends

  750. and they were like,

  751. hey,

  752. it's a little bull

  753. to get to know.

  754. So,

  755. this is kind of the stage

  756. I'm at right now

  757. and if it takes

  758. getting set up,

  759. I'll do that.

  760. Then I spent

  761. three hours

  762. trying to make up

  763. a text that was

  764. about this big.

  765. You know,

  766. running it by my friends,

  767. does this sound good?

  768. So,

  769. I text her,

  770. hey,

  771. I'd like to get to know you.

  772. She's like,

  773. so,

  774. we start talking

  775. and,

  776. you know,

  777. there was work

  778. involved there

  779. to get the blessing.

  780. You know,

  781. how ridiculous,

  782. like I said,

  783. would it have been

  784. if I hadn't put in the work?

  785. In our lives,

  786. through scripture,

  787. there's things

  788. that we know

  789. we ought to do.

  790. We don't have to pray

  791. about it.

  792. So many times

  793. we think,

  794. you know,

  795. I just got to,

  796. you know,

  797. we know it's right

  798. to pray.

  799. We know it's right

  800. to read our Bible.

  801. We don't have to pray

  802. about those.

  803. So many times

  804. I think we try

  805. in our own way,

  806. just like Isaac,

  807. to manipulate

  808. and try to get

  809. what we want.

  810. Just let God

  811. take care of it.

  812. Show up,

  813. do what you need to do,

  814. know is right,

  815. and God will take

  816. care of the rest.

  817. We got to put

  818. in that effort.

  819. And God blesses

  820. effort,

  821. by the way.

  822. that was one thing

  823. I remember,

  824. and it's always

  825. stuck with me.

  826. I couldn't even

  827. tell you the guy's name.

  828. I had gone to a,

  829. while I was still

  830. in high school,

  831. I had gone to a college.

  832. They were having

  833. like a college day

  834. and kind of get

  835. people there.

  836. And I was there

  837. and to get into

  838. the dorm that I was

  839. staying at,

  840. they gave me a key.

  841. And I had put it

  842. in my wallet,

  843. put it in a little

  844. special pocket in my

  845. wallet because I

  846. didn't want to lose

  847. the key.

  848. Lost it.

  849. So I had it there

  850. in my wallet

  851. and the speaker,

  852. I can't tell you

  853. his name,

  854. I don't even remember.

  855. He came up and

  856. he grabbed the door

  857. and he tried to open

  858. it and it was locked.

  859. He said,

  860. do you have a key?

  861. And I said,

  862. yes.

  863. And so I'm fumbling

  864. around,

  865. trying to grab my

  866. wallet,

  867. open the,

  868. you know,

  869. I'm shaking

  870. because I forget

  871. who he was,

  872. but he was the

  873. speaker for the

  874. college ordeal.

  875. So I just felt

  876. like this guy

  877. is important.

  878. And I'm fumbling

  879. around in my wallet

  880. and someone on the

  881. inside opened the

  882. door and he told me,

  883. God's going to

  884. bless you for your

  885. efforts.

  886. I don't know why

  887. that has always

  888. stuck in my head.

  889. And it's true,

  890. we may not get the

  891. result that we wanted,

  892. but God blesses

  893. efforts.

  894. You know what God

  895. is,

  896. he's interested in

  897. our faithfulness.

  898. I think about

  899. Jeremiah,

  900. he was like,

  901. nothing's going

  902. my way,

  903. you know,

  904. I'm the only one

  905. serving you.

  906. Keep showing up.

  907. God blesses

  908. faithfulness,

  909. he doesn't bless

  910. outcome.

  911. So dig the

  912. wells.

  913. If you've

  914. forfeited,

  915. forgotten the

  916. importance,

  917. failed to

  918. protect,

  919. or figured it

  920. would always be

  921. there,

  922. back to the

  923. well and start

  924. digging.

  925. God will bless

  926. that.

  927. Not only do we

  928. see the digging

  929. of the wells,

  930. but the drinking

  931. of the wells.

  932. Let's see here,

  933. he ended on

  934. verse 22.

  935. Verse 23,

  936. And he went

  937. up from thence

  938. to Beersheba.

  939. The Lord

  940. appeared unto him

  941. in the same

  942. night and said,

  943. I am the God

  944. of Abraham,

  945. thy father.

  946. Fear not,

  947. for I am with

  948. thee,

  949. and will bless

  950. thee,

  951. and multiply

  952. thy seed for

  953. my servant

  954. Abraham's sake.

  955. And he

  956. built an altar

  957. there,

  958. and called upon

  959. the name of

  960. the Lord,

  961. and pitched

  962. his tent

  963. there.

  964. There Isaac's

  965. servants

  966. digged a well.

  967. Then Abimelech

  968. comes.

  969. You've got to

  970. remember,

  971. they were in

  972. the land,

  973. and then the

  974. Bible says

  975. that he was

  976. grown a hundred

  977. fold.

  978. God's blessing

  979. him.

  980. Abimelech

  981. notices this,

  982. no doubt has

  983. heard the

  984. mumblings of

  985. the other

  986. herdsmen in

  987. Gerar.

  988. So he comes.

  989. Just a side

  990. note real quick.

  991. It says,

  992. he comes from

  993. Gerar,

  994. and who is

  995. that?

  996. Sneeze when

  997. you get to

  998. that part.

  999. One of his

  1000. friends,

  1001. and then it

  1002. says like

  1003. Fichel,

  1004. the chief

  1005. captain of

  1006. the army.

  1007. These could

  1008. be titles,

  1009. but the

  1010. Fichel,

  1011. the chief

  1012. captain of

  1013. the army,

  1014. is the

  1015. same

  1016. Fichel

  1017. that is

  1018. mentioned

  1019. with the

  1020. same title

  1021. Abimelech

  1022. in Abraham's

  1023. time in

  1024. chapter 12.

  1025. And when you

  1026. think and

  1027. consider how

  1028. long Abraham

  1029. and Isaac

  1030. lived,

  1031. there's a

  1032. good possibility

  1033. that Abimelech

  1034. lived that same

  1035. time.

  1036. I don't know.

  1037. I just think it

  1038. was interesting.

  1039. I'm not saying

  1040. it is or isn't

  1041. the same guy.

  1042. I think he

  1043. would feel

  1044. pretty ridiculous

  1045. falling for

  1046. that twice,

  1047. going after

  1048. somebody's wife

  1049. and being like,

  1050. you know,

  1051. this is my

  1052. sister.

  1053. Oh,

  1054. nope,

  1055. she's the

  1056. wife.

  1057. Several years

  1058. later doing it

  1059. again,

  1060. that'd be

  1061. embarrassing.

  1062. But Isaac

  1063. said unto

  1064. them,

  1065. wherefore,

  1066. come ye to

  1067. me,

  1068. seeing ye

  1069. hate me,

  1070. and have

  1071. sent me away

  1072. from you.

  1073. So Isaac

  1074. is asking a

  1075. good question.

  1076. What are you

  1077. doing here?

  1078. And verse

  1079. 28,

  1080. they said,

  1081. we saw

  1082. certainly that

  1083. the Lord

  1084. was with

  1085. thee,

  1086. and we

  1087. said,

  1088. let there

  1089. be now

  1090. an oath

  1091. betwixt us,

  1092. even betwixt us

  1093. in thee,

  1094. and let us

  1095. make a

  1096. covenant

  1097. with thee,

  1098. that thou

  1099. wilt do us

  1100. no hurt,

  1101. as we have

  1102. not touched

  1103. thee,

  1104. and have

  1105. done unto

  1106. thee

  1107. nothing but

  1108. good,

  1109. and have

  1110. sent thee

  1111. away in

  1112. peace.

  1113. Thou art

  1114. now the

  1115. blessed of

  1116. the Lord.

  1117. I think

  1118. what's

  1119. interesting

  1120. is when

  1121. we're doing

  1122. what we

  1123. ought to

  1124. do,

  1125. even our

  1126. enemies see

  1127. that.

  1128. Even people

  1129. that we

  1130. may not

  1131. like,

  1132. they notice

  1133. that in

  1134. our life.

  1135. I'm not

  1136. saying our

  1137. co-workers

  1138. are our

  1139. enemies,

  1140. I'm not

  1141. saying friends

  1142. and families,

  1143. neighbors,

  1144. but people

  1145. notice.

  1146. You're doing

  1147. what you

  1148. ought to

  1149. do.

  1150. The Lord

  1151. is blessing.

  1152. They notice

  1153. these things.

  1154. And Abimelech,

  1155. servants,

  1156. they notice

  1157. this.

  1158. And verse

  1159. 31,

  1160. and they

  1161. rose up

  1162. bee

  1163. times in

  1164. the morning

  1165. and swear

  1166. one to

  1167. another.

  1168. And Isaac

  1169. sent them

  1170. away,

  1171. and they

  1172. departed

  1173. from him

  1174. in peace.

  1175. And it

  1176. came to

  1177. pass the

  1178. same day

  1179. that Isaac's

  1180. servants

  1181. came and

  1182. told him

  1183. concerning

  1184. the well

  1185. which they

  1186. had digged

  1187. and said

  1188. unto him,

  1189. we have

  1190. found

  1191. water.

  1192. And he

  1193. called it

  1194. Sheba,

  1195. means promise.

  1196. Therefore

  1197. the name

  1198. of the city

  1199. is Beersheba

  1200. unto this

  1201. day.

  1202. Drinking

  1203. of the

  1204. wells.

  1205. Beersheba

  1206. means the

  1207. well of

  1208. the oath.

  1209. That's

  1210. where Abraham

  1211. had made

  1212. that oath

  1213. with Abimelech

  1214. many years

  1215. ago.

  1216. Isaac, he's

  1217. identified by

  1218. his tent

  1219. and his

  1220. altar.

  1221. The king of

  1222. Gerar shows

  1223. up, sees

  1224. this tent,

  1225. obviously we

  1226. see Isaac

  1227. built this

  1228. temple or

  1229. altar to

  1230. pray to the

  1231. Lord to

  1232. give blessing.

  1233. So he was

  1234. wealthy enough

  1235. to be able to

  1236. build himself a

  1237. fine house,

  1238. but his tent

  1239. identified him

  1240. as a pilgrim

  1241. and a stranger

  1242. in the land.

  1243. Let's turn to

  1244. Hebrews 11.

  1245. Like I said,

  1246. he was wealthy

  1247. enough, he could

  1248. have built

  1249. those nice

  1250. things, but

  1251. his tent was

  1252. what showed

  1253. him that he

  1254. was just a

  1255. pilgrim.

  1256. And we sing

  1257. that song,

  1258. this world is

  1259. not my home,

  1260. I'm just a

  1261. passing through.

  1262. Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 11:8

  1263. 11 verse 8

  1264. says,

  1265. Talk about

  1266. faith.

  1267. Imagine if

  1268. God said,

  1269. Ethan,

  1270. sell your

  1271. house and

  1272. I'm going to

  1273. take you

  1274. someplace and

  1275. I'll let you

  1276. know where

  1277. it is.

  1278. That'd be

  1279. faith.

  1280. Convince my

  1281. wife,

  1282. pregnant,

  1283. and take our

  1284. one-year-old

  1285. daughter and

  1286. just move.

  1287. But Abraham

  1288. did it.

  1289. Verse 9,

  1290. By faith he

  1291. sojourned in

  1292. the land of

  1293. promise as

  1294. in a strange

  1295. country,

  1296. dwelling in

  1297. tabernacles with

  1298. Isaac and

  1299. Jacob, the

  1300. heirs with

  1301. him of the

  1302. same promise.

  1303. For he

  1304. looked for a

  1305. city which

  1306. hath foundations

  1307. whose builder

  1308. and maker is

  1309. God.

  1310. Up down to

  1311. verse 13.

  1312. These all

  1313. died in

  1314. faith, not

  1315. having received

  1316. the promises,

  1317. but having

  1318. seen them afar

  1319. off, and

  1320. were persuaded

  1321. of them, and

  1322. embraced them,

  1323. and confessed

  1324. that they were

  1325. strangers and

  1326. pilgrims on

  1327. the earth,

  1328. for they that

  1329. say such

  1330. things declare

  1331. plainly that

  1332. they seek a

  1333. country, and

  1334. truly, the

  1335. Bible says, if

  1336. they had been

  1337. mindful of that

  1338. country from

  1339. whence they

  1340. came out, they

  1341. might have had

  1342. opportunity to

  1343. have returned,

  1344. but now they

  1345. desire a better

  1346. country, that is

  1347. in heavenly,

  1348. wherefore God is

  1349. not ashamed to be

  1350. called their God,

  1351. for he hath

  1352. prepared for them

  1353. a city.

  1354. Isaac all the

  1355. way back then

  1356. knew, I'm just

  1357. passing through.

  1358. Isn't it

  1359. interesting, you

  1360. can have

  1361. somebody who

  1362. has good and

  1363. bad days just

  1364. like we do,

  1365. there's some

  1366. days we're on

  1367. the mountaintop,

  1368. other days we're

  1369. in the valley,

  1370. he was, I

  1371. think this is

  1372. interesting, a

  1373. fugitive is

  1374. someone fleeing

  1375. from home, a

  1376. vagabond has no

  1377. home, but a

  1378. pilgrim is heading

  1379. home, and that's

  1380. what we're doing.

  1381. The tent identified

  1382. Isaac as a

  1383. pilgrim, and the

  1384. altar announced

  1385. that he worshipped

  1386. Jehovah, and was

  1387. heading up to the

  1388. heavenly kingdom.

  1389. Like Isaac, all who

  1390. have trusted Jesus

  1391. Christ are strangers

  1392. in the world, and

  1393. pilgrims heading for

  1394. a better world.

1395. So all of us would

  1396. like to find our

  1397. Rehoboth, the

  1398. enlargement, the

  1399. roominess.

  1400. I think about the

  1401. Sheba here in our

  1402. text.

  1403. This is the place,

  1404. you know, I

  1405. started off telling

  1406. you that blessings

  1407. bring battles and

  1408. burdens.

  1409. For Sheba has a

  1410. special place.

  1411. Because, you know,

  1412. Abraham, when he

  1413. had that encounter

  1414. with Abimelech, they

  1415. made that promise.

  1416. But later on, Hagar

  1417. runs there, burdened

  1418. by the fact that

  1419. Sarah hates her, and

  1420. Ishmael isn't

  1421. working out, and the

  1422. Lord appears to her

  1423. there.

  1424. I mean, Isaac, he

  1425. gets to Beersheba.

  1426. The Lord blesses him

  1427. in his time of

  1428. fighting with the

  1429. enemy for water.

  1430. During those times of

  1431. blessing and battle,

  1432. God shows up.

  1433. Later, Elijah is at

  1434. Beersheba, hiding

  1435. under a juniper

  1436. tree.

  1437. The Lord appears to

  1438. him.

  1439. Now, the Lord comes

1440. to us in our times of

  1441. battle and burden.

1442. He wants to bless us.

  1443. But there's also an

  1444. expectation on us to

  1445. trust him and allow

1446. him to do what he

  1447. said he would do.

1448. All of us are looking

  1449. for that enlargement

1450. where we have plenty of

  1451. room and no

  1452. contention.

  1453. But Isaac's Rehoboth

1454. was found only after he

  1455. endured conflict.

  1456. It's through

  1457. difficulties that God

  1458. enlarges us for larger

  1459. places.

  1460. He prepares for us.

  1461. In Psalm 4.1, it

  1462. says, Thou hast

1463. enlarged me when I was

  1464. in distress.

  1465. So when the troubles

  1466. of our hearts are

  1467. enlarged and we trust

  1468. God, then the Lord

  1469. can enlarge us.

  1470. Psalm 25.17, I'll

  1471. turn there real quick.

  1472. The troubles of my

  1473. heart are enlarged.

1474. O bring thou me out of

  1475. my distresses.

  1476. Psalm 18.19, it

  1477. says, He brought me

  1478. forth also into a

  1479. large place.

  1480. He delivered me because

  1481. he delighted in me.

1482. If we want room, we

  1483. have to suffer because

1484. that's the only way we

1485. can grow and feel at

1486. home in a larger place

1487. that God gives us when

  1488. we're ready for it.

  1489. I think that's why

  1490. Paul says, glory in

  1491. your infirmities.

  1492. It sounds silly,

  1493. right?

  1494. Oh, wow, this is

  1495. happening to me.

  1496. So good.

1497. You know, I love being

  1498. able to spend, you

  1499. know what?

  1500. Here, before we put

  1501. that offering on the

  1502. house, it was like

  1503. two weeks.

  1504. Every night, we're

  1505. going and looking at

  1506. houses.

  1507. That's exhausting.

  1508. Work all day, now

  1509. you're looking at

  1510. houses.

  1511. Your poor kid is

  1512. confused.

1513. Why are we going to

  1514. these strange houses

  1515. all the time?

  1516. You know, she thinks

  1517. we're going to buy

  1518. every single one of

  1519. them.

  1520. And you're trying to

  1521. do all this, you

  1522. finally land on

  1523. something, and then

  1524. it's not the one.

  1525. I have a choice.

1526. I can go back to

  1527. that well and start

  1528. digging again, let

  1529. God bless, or I

  1530. can't.

  1531. Those are our

  1532. choices.

  1533. I think about the

  1534. things that happen

  1535. in life that don't

  1536. go our way.

  1537. We may not even

  1538. understand why did

  1539. God allow this to

  1540. happen?

  1541. Digging.

  1542. Go to the wells.

  1543. Dig old wells.

  1544. You know what?

  1545. Dig new wells.

  1546. Let God meet you

  1547. there.

  1548. Let him be that

  1549. for sheep.

  1550. Let's pray.

  1551. Let's pray.
