  1. So we're going to finish up, Lord willing, we're going to finish up Hezekiah tonight.

  2. And as we've been looking through, this will be the fourth lesson on that.

  3. We're going to be looking at, in his days of Hezekiah here,

  4. as we finish up here in 2 Chronicles chapter 32 here tonight.

    2 Chronicles 32 chapter mention

  5. And we know that the days of Hezekiah were a time of revival,

  6. but also reckoning with Samaria and Jerusalem,

  7. and the return to worshiping the Lord correctly and properly

  8. as the temple was reestablished and put back together.

  9. And we see here that there's a refreshing in the relationship between God

  10. and the children of Israel, and the blessing of the Lord we know was abundant in the kingdom.

  11. And it was easy to say, I trust the Lord completely, you know.

  12. But we're going to see here as God allows them to be tested here in this,

  13. even at the latter part of his reign.

  14. So we see here 2 Chronicles chapter 32.

    2 Chronicles 32 chapter mention

  15. Let's look down at verse 24 is where we'll pick up here tonight.

  16. It says,

  17. In those days Hezekiah was sick and death and prayed unto the Lord,

  18. and he spake unto him and gave him a sign.

  19. But Hezekiah rendered not again according to the benefit done unto him,

  20. for his heart was lifted up, and there was wrath upon him and upon Judah and Jerusalem.

  21. Notwithstanding, Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart,

  22. both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem,

  23. so that the wrath of the Lord came not upon them in the days of Hezekiah.

  24. Let's pray.

  25. Heavenly Fathers, we just take a few moments here tonight to look into your word

  26. and to look at Hezekiah, Lord, a man and a king who desired to serve you, Lord,

  27. but struggled with the same things we can struggle with,

  28. and we can learn also here tonight, Lord,

  29. of the dynamics of even pride in our life,

  30. you know, the dangers and the pride of one of rejecting you like the Assyrians,

  31. and the other of not thinking properly about ourselves, Lord,

  32. to not think in the right mind and the right perspective.

  33. And Lord, I pray just help us to see the need and the necessity

  34. to guard our own heart in regard to the things that how Hezekiah was also tested,

  35. both personally and publicly, before others.

  36. And Lord, we just ask your hand upon the things tonight, in Jesus' name.

  37. Amen.

  38. You know, as we've been looking here at Hezekiah,

  39. we know that he was tested both personally and publicly in his life,

  40. personally in regards to how it impacted his health.

  41. You know, we know that he had experienced a sickness unto death.

  42. If you remember that Isaiah the prophet had come and told him,

  43. what, get your house in order, you know.

  44. You're soon to check out, you know.

  45. And we know that Hezekiah prayed to the Lord, and the Lord heard his prayer.

  46. And he healed him and gave him another 15 years.

  47. But also publicly, we see that he was tested with Sennacherib and the Assyrian army

  48. that came down against him.

  49. And, you know, we looked at his death and that sickness that was associated with it,

  50. and what that was stayed when he humbled himself before the Lord.

  51. But, you know, we see here that verses 25 and 26 that we read reveal something here that happens

  52. kind of unseen in the heart of an individual.

  53. You know, one of the things is pride is one of those things that can manifest so many ways

  54. that we don't always see it on the outside.

  55. Because people can have pride ruling their life and still do what everybody thinks is the right things.

  56. But their heart is not right because the reason they're doing it is not the right reason.

  57. And we're going to see some of that here tonight as we see those unseen things in the heart of Hezekiah.

  58. And really, he began to think of himself more highly than he ought.

  59. You know, look over to Romans chapter 12 for a moment tonight.

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  60. So we look over here to Romans chapter 12, and you see here in verse 3,

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  61. the Word of God reminds us of the dangers that we find here.

  62. In Romans 3, it says this,

  63. For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you,

  64. knows us not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think,

  65. but to think what? Soberly, according as God has dealt to every man the measure of faith.

  66. You know, I want you to understand, not to think of yourself more highly.

  67. You know, as people, it's very easy to begin to think of yourself more highly than you ought

  68. because it comes in a lot of forms.

  69. You know, false humility can be a form of pride.

  70. You know, most people don't.

  71. You know, some people, they try to downplay themselves so much it becomes a prideful thing in that.

  72. So, I mean, pride is a vicious thing.

  73. That takes a hold in our heart, but it has to do with our thinking.

  74. You know, of how we think about ourselves, to think about God,

  75. because throughout this last season, we're going to look at Hezekiah's life,

  76. we find that pride was a driving influence all around him,

  77. whether it was from the Assyrian enemy,

  78. or a heart of a king who the Bible tells us sought to do right before God.

  79. You know, you can have right intentions sometimes and still have pride issues.

  80. Pride is something that builds up in our life, and we see that we allow it to go

  81. because consider the dynamics of pride in this passage of Scripture.

  82. You know, we see or consider Sennacherib, the Assyrian king.

  83. I think if we looked last week at all the things he said about God,

  84. you can see he had a pride, he had a heart lifted up,

  85. that I am above God.

  86. I'm above those things.

  87. And, you know, he actually blasphemed the name of the Lord, the Bible tells us.

  88. And we see here he's breaking something very simple,

  89. because sometimes we need to connect what's going on.

  90. You know, what did Sennacherib break?

  91. What law of God did he break?

  92. Well, he broke the second commandment where it tells us in Exodus chapter 20,

    Exodus 20 chapter mention

  93. thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain,

  94. for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

  95. You know what?

  96. He used the Lord's name in vain by saying, I'm above you.

  97. You know, he used it in a way that was counter to glorifying God.

  98. And we see that dynamic in his life.

  99. And, you know, take a look over, turn to Psalms 10,

  100. Psalms 10 tonight.

  101. And, you know, we'll talk a little bit about this,

  102. and we'll get into what's all going on here.

  103. But we find here in the 10th chapter of the Psalm, we see here,

  104. it says this in verse 4.

  105. It tells us that the wicked, through the pride of his countenance,

  106. will not seek after God.

  107. So what did Sennacherib?

  108. He didn't want to seek after God by the pride of what?

  109. His countenance.

  110. He thought he was greater than God.

  111. For Sennacherib, that was what was happening there.

  112. That's the counter.

  113. And we understand that God is not at all in his thoughts,

  114. it tells us there in verse 4.

  115. You know, that's a sign of pride if people just forget God.

  116. Because you know what you're saying?

  117. I can do life without him.

  118. I can put God away and do life without God.

  119. That's pride saying, I can and I don't need God.

  120. And we see that dynamic.

  121. But notice in verse 5 it says,

  122. His ways are always grievous,

  123. thy judgments are far out of his sight.

  124. For all his enemies he puffeth at them.

  125. You know, and we see this dynamic in the life of Sennacherib

  126. that's impacting Hezekiah.

  127. But you know, we also see Hezekiah.

  128. You know, look over to Proverbs chapter 16.

    Proverbs 16 chapter mention

  129. Proverbs chapter 16, we see this dynamic of what it tells us about pride.

    Proverbs 16 chapter mention

  130. It says this, chapter 16 and verse 18 says,

  131. Pride goeth before what?

  132. Destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall.

  133. Better it to be of a humble spirit with the lowly

  134. than divide the spoil with the proud.

  135. You know what?

  136. Hezekiah got hung up on the spoil.

  137. He got hung up on all that God had blessed him with.

  138. You know, and today we can do the same thing.

  139. We can get caught up on what we have

  140. and what God's blessed us with

  141. and lose sight of the one that blessed us.

  142. You know, instead of being just thankful

  143. for what God has given us,

  144. we can be like grabbing a hold

  145. and want to be proudful and prideful of what we have.

  146. And we see the blasphemy here of Assyria.

  147. You know, oftentimes we don't consider how prideful it was

  148. because we remember just a few weeks ago

  149. we talked about that

  150. because God sent a prophet to a city

  151. by the name of Nineveh

  152. and they had repented and turned to the Lord

  153. and now here they come.

  154. They went from a king in Nineveh

  155. that feared the Lord

  156. because Jonah, remember, preached through the streets

  157. and they repented

  158. and turned to God

  159. and you go back and look, you know,

  160. the king of Assyria there in Nineveh

  161. was like when the prophet told him

  162. what was going to happen

  163. because the prophet began to weep

  164. and he's just like, we'll never do that.

  165. But you know what?

  166. When you get lifted up in pride,

  167. you'll do things you said you'll never do.

  168. When pride gets a hold of you,

  169. you'll do all sorts of things

  170. that you said you'd never do.

  171. And in our life, that's very true

  172. and we can learn from that.

  173. The blasphemy of there,

  174. the king of Assyria and his servants

  175. spoke against the Lord,

  176. railing upon him.

  177. You know, we saw that.

  178. Look over here in verse 16 of chapter 32

  179. and it says,

  180. And his servants spake yet more against the Lord God

  181. and against his servant Hezekiah.

  182. And he wrote also letters to rail

  183. on the Lord God of Israel

  184. and speak against him,

  185. saying,

  186. As the gods of the nations of other lands

  187. have not delivered their people out of mine hands,

  188. so shall not the God of Hezekiah

  189. deliver his people out of their hand.

  190. You know?

  191. We see here,

  192. what's the dynamic?

  193. Sennacherib is telling his people

  194. to go blaspheme the Lord.

  195. But look down at verse 20 in chapter 32.

  196. Notice this,

  197. It is for this cause,

  198. Hezekiah the king and the prophet Isaiah,

  199. the son of Amos,

  200. prayed and cried to heaven.

  201. You know, we see here that Hezekiah and Isaiah

  202. prayed to the Lord

  203. and their prayer was heard,

  204. their prayer was answered,

  205. but we understand that it was not going to come

  206. by a sword or a chariot.

  207. It wasn't going to be come by Hezekiah

  208. rising up a great men of valor

  209. or battle-hardened soldiers to go out

  210. or even a great battle plan.

  211. You know, the Lord said,

  212. Stand by because I'm going to take care of things.

  213. You know?

  214. Look down here in 2 Chronicles 32, verse 21.

    2 Chronicles 32:21

  215. Notice what it tells us here.

  216. And the Lord sent an angel

  217. which cut off all the mighty men of valor

  218. and the leaders and the captains of the king

  219. are in the camp of the king of Assyria.

  220. So he returned with shame of face

  221. to his own land.

  222. And when he was coming to the house of his God,

  223. they came forth of his own bowels,

  224. slew him there with the sword.

  225. You know?

  226. So I want you to see what happens here.

  227. God is going to intervene.

  228. He answers the prayer of Hezekiah and Isaiah

  229. and God sends.

  230. It says,

  231. The angel of the Lord went out.

  232. And we're going to look a little bit at this tonight

  233. because if you look over in 2 Kings chapter 19,

    2 Kings 19 chapter mention

  234. that's that parallel passage.

  235. You know, it kind of gives us

  236. those two different perspectives

  237. because in Chronicles,

  238. you might say the more,

  239. a spiritual God's view of what's happening.

  240. God didn't make too big a deal about it,

  241. but on the other side in 2 Kings,

  242. you'll find physically there was a lot

  243. of dynamic happening.

  244. You know, we find here in 2 Kings chapter 19,

    2 Kings 19 chapter mention

  245. it says this down in verse 35.

  246. The Word of God tells us this,

  247. And it came to pass that night

  248. that the angel of the Lord went out

  249. and smote in the camp of the Assyrians

  250. a hundred fourscore and five thousand.

  251. So who's our quick mathematicians?

  252. How many is that?

  253. 185,000.

  254. Including the captains and all those

  255. that were a part of the army there,

  256. of the Assyrians.

  257. And we see here, it says,

  258. And when they rose early in the morning,

  259. behold, they were all dead corpses.

  260. So Sennacherib, king of Assyria,

  261. departed and went and returned

  262. and dwelt at Nineveh.

  263. You know, here we have one of those passages

  264. a lot of people like.

  265. They catch up on that thing.

  266. They woke in all dead corpses.

  267. You know, it's one of those terms

  268. that catches people's attention.

  269. You know, trying to figure out

  270. what's going on.

  271. And there's a lot of speculation

  272. as to what happened.

  273. You know, how did 185,000 die in the night?

  274. You know, but if you turn over,

  275. look over to Isaiah chapter 37 for a moment.

    Isaiah 37 chapter mention

  276. Because I think Isaiah,

  277. his report on this gives us

  278. a little insight into this.

  279. And I think it fits what could have happened here.

  280. We find that chapter 37, verse 7,

  281. it says,

  282. Behold, I will send a what?

  283. A what?

  284. A blast upon him.

  285. And he shall hear a rumor

  286. and return to his own land.

  287. And I will cause him to fall

  288. by the sword in his own land.

  289. That's Isaiah prophesying about Sennacherib.

  290. But he talks about,

  291. I'll send a blast.

  292. Chronicles in Kings says

  293. the angel of the Lord went out.

  294. You know, there's an interesting phenomenon

  295. in the Middle East.

  296. That until I got to study this,

  297. I didn't even realize what it was.

  298. But there's actually a term over there

  299. that they call,

  300. they refer to it as a poison wind.

  301. And what comes,

  302. you know, you think about it,

  303. Isaiah says he's going to put a blast upon them.

  304. And one of the things that happens here,

  305. it's a simun,

  306. is what they call it,

  307. and it's an extremely hot, dry local wind

  308. that blows through

  309. and the temperatures reach

  310. about 130 degrees Fahrenheit.

  311. And the humidity drops below 10%.

  312. And what it actually causes,

  313. it says,

  314. because this is recorded,

  315. they say that people will get caught in these

  316. and their body will actually overheat

  317. and they'll die from heat stroke.

  318. They can be sitting still

  319. and die of heat stroke

  320. from this wind that comes through.

  321. Now, whether God used that or not,

  322. but I think we have a pretty good case

  323. that it's a possibility

  324. of what took place there that night

  325. because it would make sense

  326. why they were all just laying there dead

  327. because what?

  328. They just died where they slept.

  329. You know?

  330. Now, you can agree or disagree

  331. or whatever,

  332. it really doesn't matter,

  333. but I think it's a good connection

  334. where Isaiah says it was a blast

  335. and we know historically

  336. and even currently,

  337. those things happen over there

  338. and they said that they'd wipe out

  339. entire caravans of merchants

  340. even crossing the desert

  341. when one of these would come across.

  342. And so, depending on where they were sleeping,

  343. it could very easily have taken place,

  344. you know,

  345. because I want you to understand

  346. when it says the angel of the Lord went out

  347. doesn't mean that there was a physical dynamic

  348. that took place.

  349. God uses weather all the time.

  350. You know?

  351. Days of Noah,

  352. you'll see God stir up things in Egypt

  353. and part of the plagues.

  354. I mean, none of this is beyond that,

  355. but I want you to just,

  356. something to think about there to connect

  357. because we ought to look for our answers

  358. not someplace else.

  359. We ought to look,

  360. what does the Bible say about it?

  361. You know?

  362. And so, I think that connection there

  363. makes a good connection

  364. of what took place

  365. and how 185,000

  366. and those that happened to be

  367. in the right spot,

  368. including Sennacherib,

  369. that weren't overheated during the night

  370. got up and saw everybody dead.

  371. You know?

  372. And so, we see that.

  373. That's just one of those little side things for tonight.

  374. So, get your Bible trivia in,

  375. you know, on that.

  376. But I think it's important to realize

  377. that God explains Himself

  378. and gives us insight

  379. into those things.

  380. And we find here

  381. that God accomplishes His word

  382. concerning Sennacherib.

  383. You know, He turned back to Assyria,

  384. follows the devastating destruction

  385. of His army.

  386. You know, even in those days,

  387. if you lost 185,000 troops

  388. in one night,

  389. you're in trouble.

  390. You know?

  391. He needed to turn back.

  392. And we find also a rumor,

  393. we find when He gets back,

  394. His own sons kill Him.

  395. Two of His own sons kill Him

  396. in the house of His God,

  397. the Bible tells us.

  398. You know, exactly as

  399. Isaiah foretold

  400. was going to happen.

  401. Isaiah laid out

  402. all those things for us.

  403. And so,

  404. but,

  405. take a look here

  406. and then,

  407. back over in 2 Chronicles chapter 32,

    2 Chronicles 32 chapter mention

  408. look down at the

  409. verse 22,

  410. and it says this,

  411. And thus the Lord

  412. saved Hezekiah

  413. and the inhabitants

  414. of Jerusalem

  415. from the hand

  416. of Sennacherib,

  417. the king of Assyria,

  418. and from the hand

  419. of all others,

  420. and guided them

  421. on every side.

  422. And many brought gifts

  423. unto the Lord

  424. to Jerusalem

  425. and present to Hezekiah,

  426. king of Judah,

  427. so that he was magnified

  428. in the sight of the nations

  429. from henceforth.

  430. Now,

  431. I want you to consider

  432. something here

  433. because we're talking

  434. a little bit about

  435. the pride taking place

  436. in the latter days

  437. of Hezekiah.

  438. You think about that,

  439. I guarantee you,

  440. Hezekiah didn't have

  441. a problem pointing out

  442. Sennacherib's pride.

  443. You know,

  444. matter of fact,

  445. that was part of his prayer.

  446. Lord,

  447. are you going to let him

  448. talk about you like that?

  449. You know,

  450. are you going to let him

  451. be prideful

  452. and say he's more powerful

  453. than you?

  454. You know,

  455. the interesting thing

  456. about pride too,

  457. it's always easier

  458. to spot somebody else.

  459. It's always easier

  460. to analyze somebody else

  461. and what might be prideful

  462. than our own selves.

  463. And I think it's easy

  464. for us,

  465. even as Hezekiah,

  466. we're going to see here,

  467. gets caught up in pride

  468. because of God's blessing.

  469. Because he lost sight

  470. of where did he get

  471. the blessing from?

  472. You know,

  473. he had all this

  474. great dynamics.

  475. Blessings came upon them

  476. once again,

  477. it tells us.

  478. You know,

  479. the Lord blessed him.

  480. We see here

  481. in chapter 32

  482. down in verse 22,

  483. it says very clearly

  484. that God was with them

  485. that came from the hand

  486. of all others

  487. and guided them

  488. on every side of Moses

  489. and many brought what?

  490. Gifts unto the Lord

  491. to Jerusalem

  492. and presents to Hezekiah,

  493. king of Judah.

  494. And he was magnified

  495. in the sight

  496. of all the nations

  497. from henceforth.

  498. You know,

  499. suddenly Hezekiah,

  500. who was looked at

  501. as a weak,

  502. going to be wiped out

  503. by the Assyrians,

  504. suddenly Assyrians

  505. are gone.

  506. Everybody else is saying,

  507. hey,

  508. Hezekiah must be

  509. somebody great.

  510. The rest of the world,

  511. what they saw

  512. is what happened

  513. and said Hezekiah

  514. must be a great king

  515. if he defeated Sennacherib.

  516. You know,

  517. if he overcame this,

  518. he must be a great king

  519. because nobody else

  520. could stand against him.

  521. You know,

  522. pride,

  523. one of the things

  524. that gets us in trouble

  525. when you start believing

  526. in other people's reports.

  527. You know,

  528. when people build up

  529. and try to make you

  530. something that you're not,

  531. you need to keep in mind

  532. of keeping the right perspective

  533. and the right thinking

  534. about those things.

  535. Because we're going to see here

  536. because what goes along

  537. with that pride

  538. comes akin very quickly

  539. to flattery.

  540. You know what,

  541. when you have pride

  542. and somebody comes along

  543. flattering,

  544. you know what it does to pride?

  545. Builds it up pretty fast,

  546. doesn't it?

  547. Builds it up very quickly

  548. and we find

  549. that the people

  550. and the nations

  551. and the kings

  552. around about

  553. brought gifts to Jerusalem

  554. and to Hezekiah.

  555. The fact that Jerusalem

  556. had survived

  557. this Assyrian attack

  558. magnified Judah

  559. and Hezekiah

  560. in the sight of all others,

  561. even into Babylon.

  562. You know?

  563. So we see here

  564. that the blessing

  565. of the Lord

  566. was great upon them.

  567. You know,

  568. this blessing

  569. that God gave

  570. upon Hezekiah

  571. and Judah

  572. and the kingdom here

  573. was great.

  574. look over at verse 27

  575. because I want you

  576. to keep in context

  577. for a moment

  578. when we get ready

  579. to read this

  580. because consider

  581. what had happened

  582. before the Assyrians

  583. came.

  584. Remember when the Assyrians

  585. came?

  586. What did Hezekiah's

  587. first response?

  588. Do you remember?

  589. Well,

  590. no,

  591. when the Assyrians

  592. came

  593. and he was afraid

  594. of Sennacherib,

  595. what did he do?

  596. He took all the gold

  597. out of the city

  598. and he stripped

  599. the gold off the doors

  600. and he gave it

  601. as a gift.

  602. So I want you

  603. to understand

  604. before this,

  605. the city

  606. was basically broke.

  607. They had nothing.

  608. Why?

  609. Because Hezekiah

  610. had given it

  611. to Sennacherib.

  612. Now afterwards

  613. we see that God

  614. blesses him.

  615. Now notice

  616. what he does here.

  617. It says,

  618. notwithstanding,

  619. or excuse me,

  620. in verse 27,

  621. Hezekiah had exceeding

  622. much riches

  623. and honor.

  624. Where did he get that?

  625. You know,

  626. from everybody

  627. bringing it in.

  628. You know,

  629. suddenly he was

  630. the great conqueror.

  631. Everybody was bringing

  632. everything to Jerusalem.

  633. People were providing

  634. all those things.

  635. He had much riches

  636. and honor.

  637. And made himself,

  638. notice how much

  639. he has now,

  640. he made himself

  641. treasuries for silver

  642. and for gold

  643. and for precious stones

  644. and for spices

  645. and for shields

  646. and all manner

  647. of pleasant jewels.

  648. storehouses also

  649. for the increase

  650. of corn

  651. and wine

  652. and oil

  653. and stalls

  654. for all manners

  655. of beasts

  656. and coats

  657. for flocks.

  658. Moreover,

  659. he provided him

  660. cities and possessions

  661. of flocks

  662. and herds

  663. in abundance

  664. for God

  665. had given him

  666. substance

  667. very much.

  668. Now I want you

  669. to see here,

  670. God,

  671. when Hezekiah

  672. humbled himself

  673. before God,

  674. God answered

  675. his prayer

  676. and God

  677. blessed them

  678. in a mighty way.

  679. But you know what,

  680. it wasn't long

  681. before Hezekiah

  682. lost sight

  683. of what God did.

  684. You know,

  685. I think it's a good

  686. warning to us

  687. how quickly

  688. we can lose sight

  689. of God's blessing

  690. and get it

  691. out of proportion.

  692. Because I want you

  693. to understand,

  694. Hezekiah is still

  695. noted as being

  696. a good king.

  697. He's a man

  698. who sought

  699. after God.

  700. You might be

  701. seeking after God,

  702. but pride

  703. is one of those

  704. things the devil

  705. uses as a tool

  706. to leverage

  707. everything in your

  708. life,

  709. doesn't he?

  710. Pride is a very

  711. dangerous thing

  712. and we see

  713. what takes place

  714. here.

  715. We see a situation

  716. that we can easily

  717. fall into

  718. because Hezekiah

  719. didn't render

  720. the right response

  721. towards the Lord.

  722. He was not

  723. thankful

  724. but prideful.

  725. Look up at

  726. verse 25

  727. for a moment.

  728. Look at

  729. what the scripture

  730. tells us.

  731. But Hezekiah

  732. rendered not

  733. again according

  734. to the benefit

  735. what?

  736. Done unto him.

  737. Let that sink

  738. in for a moment.

  739. In other words,

  740. Hezekiah

  741. did not

  742. acknowledge

  743. what God

  744. had given him.

  745. In other words,

  746. for some reason

  747. he began to

  748. believe the reports

  749. everybody was

  750. saying.

  751. Hezekiah,

  752. you're so great.

  753. You know,

  754. people flattering him,

  755. bringing him gifts.

  756. God was blessing him

  757. but yet

  758. in his mind

  759. and his heart

  760. it was building up

  761. a prideful

  762. dynamic

  763. towards the things

  764. of God's blessing.

  765. He rendered

  766. not again.

  767. Let's simply

  768. put it this way.

  769. He didn't recognize

  770. where he got it from.

  771. He began to think

  772. it was of himself

  773. instead of

  774. what God had done.

  775. You know,

  776. it's easy to get

  777. caught into that

  778. and we see here,

  779. look at the rest

  780. of that verse.

  781. It says,

  782. for his heart

  783. was what?

  784. Lifted up.

  785. His heart

  786. was lifted up.

  787. In other words,

  788. when he started

  789. getting past

  790. the danger

  791. and past

  792. the dynamic

  793. and the situation

  794. in life

  795. that had distressed

  796. him and God

  797. began to bless again,

  798. what did he do?

  799. He forgot about God.

  800. He forgot about

  801. what God had done.

  802. And we're going

  803. to see here

  804. that God sends

  805. a test

  806. upon him

  807. to reveal this.

  808. And we're going

  809. to see that

  810. God does this

  811. instead of walking

  812. humbly with God

  813. and giving the glory

  814. entirely to him,

  815. Hezekiah takes

  816. honor to himself.

  817. And so we're going

  818. to look here

  819. at the business

  820. of pride.

  821. Notice this next

  822. section here.

  823. It tells us

  824. in verse 31,

  825. notice this,

  826. says,

  827. how be it in the

  828. business of the

  829. ambassadors of the

  830. princes of Babylon.

  831. Babylon.

  832. Now we're going

  833. to look here

  834. because what does

  835. God do?

  836. We're going

  837. to find that

  838. God allows

  839. some princes

  840. of Babylon

  841. to come

  842. and what happens

  843. here is going

  844. to expose

  845. the heart

  846. of the king.

  847. Now notice this,

  848. who sent unto him

  849. to inquire

  850. the wonder

  851. that was done

  852. in the land.

  853. God left him

  854. to try him

  855. that he might

  856. know all

  857. that was what?

  858. In his heart.

  859. You know,

  860. one of the things

  861. that I think

  862. God allows

  863. things into

  864. our life

  865. to make sure

  866. we recognize

  867. when pride

  868. is building up.

  869. When we get

  870. too much of a

  871. focus upon

  872. ourselves

  873. and what we

  874. have instead

  875. of what God

  876. has done.

  877. God allows

  878. things to come

  879. into our life.

  880. We notice here,

  881. God allowed

  882. these to come

  883. and he used

  884. it as a test,

  885. as a dynamic

  886. to see what

  887. was truly

  888. in Hezekiah's

  889. heart.

  890. what was

  891. there,

  892. what was

  893. truly there

  894. because,

  895. you know,

  896. we notice

  897. and we've

  898. talked about

  899. this the last

  900. few weeks,

  901. you know what,

  902. you don't really

  903. know how you're

  904. going to respond

  905. until you're

  906. in a situation,

  907. until you're

  908. actually in the

  909. dynamic.

  910. You know,

  911. have you ever

  912. noticed there's

  913. a lot of

  914. easy to,

  915. you know,

  916. couch quarterbacks,

  917. you know,

  918. they know exactly

  919. what they would

  920. have done.

  921. You know,

  922. if they'd only

  923. done what I

  924. would have done,

  925. everything would

  926. have been fine.

  927. You know,

  928. they sit there

  929. and they analyze

  930. and they sit

  931. on the couch,

  932. but you know,

  933. it's a lot

  934. different when

  935. you're out

  936. there in the

  937. midst of it.

  938. To see how

  939. are you going

  940. to actually

  941. respond in

  942. the circumstance.

  943. Because,

  944. you know,

  945. oftentimes you

  946. don't know

  947. until you're

  948. tested.

  949. You know,

  950. we're in

  951. football season.

  952. Here's a good

  953. example of this.

  954. You know,

  955. think about

  956. pre-season

  957. polls.

  958. Nobody's

  959. played a game

  960. yet.

  961. And they're

  962. already hyping

  963. people up.

  964. And you know,

  965. they're going to

  966. be great and

  967. all this.

  968. And you know

  969. what?

  970. They have a lot

  971. of hype,

  972. but guess what?

  973. Sooner or later

  974. they get on the

  975. field and a test

  976. comes.

  977. And that's the

  978. reason at the

  979. end of the season

  980. you don't usually

  981. see a lot of the

  982. same teams that

  983. started out at the

  984. beginning.

  985. What happened is

  986. the test,

  987. they failed.

  988. They had a lot

  989. of hype.

  990. They thought what

  991. they were going to

  992. do, but it

  993. didn't materialize

  994. in what they did

  995. do.

  996. You know,

  997. in our own life

  998. that's the same

  999. dynamic.

  1000. Are we going to

  1001. do and accomplish

  1002. what God would

  1003. have for us to

  1004. do?

  1005. Are we going to

  1006. be faithful to

  1007. do those things,

  1008. this business of

  1009. pride?

  1010. And we see here

  1011. that the kings,

  1012. when they saw

  1013. the Assyrians

  1014. retreat, they all

  1015. came bearing

  1016. gifts and flattery

  1017. to Hezekiah.

  1018. And when these

  1019. particular ones come

  1020. from Babylon, and

  1021. to get a little

  1022. more information,

  1023. we need to go

  1024. back to 2 Kings.

  1025. You know, 2 Kings

    2 Kings 19 chapter mention

  1026. chapter 19, or

  1027. excuse me, chapter

  1028. 20, gives us some

  1029. more insight into

  1030. what takes place

  1031. here.

  1032. Because Chronicles

  1033. just says, hey,

  1034. God used this to

  1035. see what was in

  1036. his heart.

  1037. And then you go

  1038. over to Kings, and

  1039. Kings describes what

  1040. actually took place.

  1041. How did this play

  1042. out?

  1043. What was the

  1044. dynamic?

  1045. And it tells us

  1046. here in 2 Kings

    2 Kings 20 chapter mention

  1047. chapter 20, look

  1048. down here in

  1049. verse 13.

  1050. It says, in

  1051. Hezekiah, or

  1052. excuse me, let's

  1053. go to verse 12.

  1054. And at that

  1055. time, Beradish

  1056. Balan, the son

  1057. of Baladin, the

  1058. king of Babylon,

  1059. sent letters and

  1060. a present to

  1061. Hezekiah.

  1062. For he had heard

  1063. that Hezekiah had

  1064. been sick.

  1065. In other words, he

  1066. heard that Hezekiah

  1067. was supposed to

  1068. die, and now he

  1069. lives, and the

  1070. Assyrians have

  1071. departed.

  1072. You know, he's

  1073. like, hey, we

  1074. need to butter this

  1075. guy up some, you

  1076. know.

  1077. And so notice

  1078. this, and

  1079. Hezekiah did

  1080. what?

  1081. What's that next

  1082. word there in

  1083. verse 13?

  1084. Hearkened.

  1085. What did Hezekiah

  1086. hearken unto?

  1087. That's the question.

  1088. Flattery.

  1089. Building him up.

  1090. Because I guarantee

  1091. you the representatives

  1092. from Babylon didn't

  1093. come and say,

  1094. Hezekiah, you're a

  1095. fool, you're an

  1096. idiot, you're all

  1097. sorts of things.

  1098. They didn't know,

  1099. Hezekiah, you're a

  1100. great guy, look what

  1101. you've got, look what

  1102. you've done, look what

  1103. you've accomplished, look

  1104. how great you are.

1105. You must be a great

  1106. individual because he

  1107. hearkens unto them and

1108. he gets caught up in the

1109. flattery and he begins to

  1110. march them around and

  1111. shows them everything

  1112. that's there.

1113. Look at the next thing

  1114. that happens here.

1115. And he showed them all

  1116. the house of his

  1117. precious things, the

1118. silver, the gold, and the

  1119. spices, and the precious

  1120. ointment, and all the

1121. house of his armor, and

1122. all that was found in

  1123. his treasures.

  1124. There was nothing in

1125. his house nor in all

  1126. his dominion that

  1127. Hezekiah showed them

  1128. not.

  1129. Now, you read that

  1130. verse, think about what

  1131. actually took place.

  1132. What's that verse

  1133. describing?

  1134. Yeah.

  1135. Here's Hezekiah, the

  1136. king of Babylon sends

  1137. his messengers with all

  1138. this flattery, and

  1139. Hezekiah, well, yeah, I

1140. am great, let me show

1141. you how great I am.

1142. Look at all this stuff

  1143. that I have.

1144. Look at all the things

  1145. that I've gained.

1146. Look at all the different

1147. things that God has, you

1148. know, that I have, and He

1149. didn't give pride, or He

1150. didn't give honor to the

  1151. Lord.

1152. We see here this dynamic.

  1153. We'll look a little later

1154. here in this passage in

1155. verse 14, where Isaiah the

  1156. prophet comes and says,

  1157. hey, what'd you do?

  1158. But you know what?

1159. I want you to understand,

  1160. pride comes in different

  1161. forms.

1162. Or should I say it

  1163. manifests itself in

  1164. different forms.

  1165. Think about Uzziah, the

  1166. kings that we talked

  1167. about, Uzziah.

  1168. Uzziah, his great

  1169. grandfather, Hezekiah's

  1170. great grandfather had a

  1171. problem with pride.

  1172. Do you remember what

  1173. Uzziah did?

  1174. Remember, he was the

  1175. king that charged into

1176. the house of God and

  1177. wanted to burn incense

  1178. before the Lord where

  1179. only the priests were

  1180. supposed to?

  1181. You know, here's Uzziah,

  1182. his great grandfather had

  1183. a spiritual pride, you

1184. might say, of saying, I'm

1185. great enough, I can just

1186. do whatever I want and

1187. don't have to worry about

1188. what God said about it.

1189. But here with Hezekiah, we

1190. have it show up in a

  1191. different form, what we

1192. might say is a worldly

  1193. pride.

  1194. The pride of life.

1195. You know, look at me.

1196. You know, when you see

1197. this dynamic, a lot of

  1198. people want people to

  1199. look at them.

1200. They want to be built up

  1201. in that, you know.

1202. But look over to the New

  1203. Testament for a moment.

  1204. Go to 1 John.

  1205. 1 John chapter 2.

    1 John 2 chapter mention

  1206. John's writing to

  1207. believers and he's

  1208. telling us some important

  1209. information.

1210. He says, I have written

  1211. unto you fathers because

1212. you have not, you have

1213. known him that is from the

  1214. beginning.

1215. I have written unto you

1216. young men because you are

1217. strong and the word of God

1218. abideth in you and you

  1219. have overcome the wicked

  1220. one.

1221. Now that sounds pretty good,

  1222. doesn't it?

1223. But think about the next

  1224. verse here.

1225. Love not the world, neither

1226. the things that are in the

  1227. world.

1228. If any man love the world,

1229. the love of the Father is

  1230. not in him.

1231. For all that is in the

1232. world, the lust of the

1233. flesh, the lust of the

1234. eyes, and the pride of life

1235. is not of the Father but is

  1236. of the world.

1237. You know, Hezekiah stands as

1238. a stark warning to us to

1239. keep our eyes on the right

  1240. thing.

1241. To keep our eyes on the

1242. Lord because if we begin

1243. looking to love the world,

  1244. you know what happens?

  1245. Those things become the

  1246. attachment.

  1247. You know?

1248. And we understand in this

1249. case of Hezekiah, he faced

1250. a test and failed under

  1251. temptation that's common to

  1252. so many of us.

  1253. You know?

1254. It's easy to get caught up

  1255. in pride.

1256. To think more highly of

1257. yourself than you ought to

  1258. think.

  1259. Pride is something that

1260. causes a lot of problems.

1261. You can look through the,

1262. if you want a little Bible

1263. study, just type in the word

1264. pride in your little digital

1265. thing there and look up

1266. what the Bible has to say

  1267. about it.

  1268. You'll never find anything

  1269. positive associated with

  1270. pride.

  1271. Destruction, stumbling,

  1272. heartache, pain, agony.

1273. I mean, the road it leads

1274. you down is never good.

1275. It either causes a direct

1276. problem for you or others

  1277. around you.

  1278. Because what happens is

  1279. pride means we forget

  1280. about God.

1281. Look back in the Old

  1282. Testament for a moment.

  1283. Go to Deuteronomy chapter

    Deuteronomy 8 chapter mention

  1284. 8.

  1285. Deuteronomy chapter 8.

    Deuteronomy 8 chapter mention

1286. You know, as you read the

  1287. Bible sometimes, it's good

1288. to try to put things in

  1289. context and even order.

  1290. Because it's interesting as

  1291. you read through Deuteronomy

  1292. how many things that

1293. happened to the kings, God

  1294. warns them about.

  1295. Before it's even happened,

1296. God says, hey, you better

  1297. pay attention.

  1298. Look down here at

  1299. Deuteronomy chapter 8.

    Deuteronomy 8 chapter mention

  1300. Look at verse 11.

1301. Notice what God tells them.

1302. They're not even in the

  1303. land yet.

  1304. He says,

  1305. Beware that thou forget

1306. not the Lord thy God,

  1307. in not keeping his

  1308. commandments and his

  1309. judgments and his

  1310. statutes which I command

  1311. thee this day.

  1312. Now notice this.

1313. Lest when thou hast eaten

1314. and art full, and hast built

  1315. goodly houses and dwelt

1316. therein, and when thy herds

1317. and thy flocks multiply, and

1318. thy silver and thy gold is

  1319. multiplied, and all that

  1320. thou hast is multiplied.

  1321. What's that next phrase?

1322. Then thine heart be what?

  1323. What happened to Hezekiah?

  1324. When God multiplied everything,

  1325. what did he do?

1326. He forgot about God and his

  1327. heart was what?

  1328. Lifted up.

1329. You know, the great thing

1330. about God is he gives us the

  1331. warning beforehand.

1332. He gives us insight to the

  1333. dangers that lie ahead.

1334. He said, you're going to face

1335. a danger of pride in your

1336. life if you don't keep your

1337. eyes on the right things.

  1338. You're going to face a danger

1339. of it, and Hezekiah revealed

1340. all that he had to them

  1341. because of pride.

1342. Instead of giving glory to God,

1343. he presented himself and his

  1344. glory instead.

1345. Now, I want you to consider,

  1346. if you remember Hezekiah's

1347. prayer to God, in his prayer

1348. to God, he said, God,

  1349. they're blaspheming your name.

1350. You know, you need to be,

1351. take care of them so your

1352. name would be glorified in

  1353. the world.

  1354. And I'm summarizing there,

1355. but that's the synopsis of

  1356. Hezekiah's prayer.

1357. It's interesting that after it

1358. was solved, what did Hezekiah

  1359. do?

1360. He said, look at me.

1361. Because he had an opportunity,

1362. all the nations, all the

  1363. kingdoms, everybody was coming

  1364. to Jerusalem to recognize

1365. Hezekiah, and Hezekiah had an

1366. opportunity to say, no, it's not

  1367. me, it's God.

1368. He had a chance to glorify God,

1369. instead he allowed himself to

  1370. be glorified.

  1371. Pride.

  1372. Dangerous thing.

1373. As we look at the life of

1374. Hezekiah, and we see here,

1375. turn back over to 2 Chronicles

    2 Chronicles 32 chapter mention

1376. chapter 32 here, as we get back

  1377. over here.

1378. because notice what God allowed

  1379. this to happen.

1380. It says this, and who sent unto

1381. him to inquire the wonder that

1382. was done in the land, God left

1383. him to try that he might know all

1384. that was in his heart.

  1385. Now think about that.

1386. What did God want to know?

1387. Hezekiah, are you really going to

1388. keep, do you really going to glorify

  1389. me in the moment?

1390. Are you got pride that needs to be

  1391. dealt with?

1392. Are you going to deal with the

  1393. right thing?

1394. And we find here, God allowed

1395. this test to see what was in

  1396. his heart.

  1397. It's a test that revealed his

1398. lack of gratitude toward the one

1399. that redeemed him out of the hand

1400. of the enemy and out of death.

1401. And the problem is not

1402. recognizing, the problem of not

1403. recognizing the source of our

1404. blessing can easily creep into our

  1405. life.

1406. You know, when we forget that what

1407. we have is because God has blessed

  1408. us.

1409. Whether it's little or much, you

1410. possess it because God has blessed

  1411. you.

1412. But that's very easy to lose sight of

  1413. that, isn't it?

1414. Very quickly to lose sight, just as

1415. Hezekiah, because we find here the

1416. prophet Isaiah reveals the judgment

1417. upon his house and it's going to be

1418. reserved for a different day.

1419. Now, this is another dynamic.

1420. Look over in 2 Kings chapter 20

    2 Kings 20 chapter mention

  1421. and verse 19.

1422. Because Isaiah comes and says,

1423. hey, you're going to face the

  1424. judgment of the Babylonians.

1425. Matter of fact, the Babylonians are

1426. going to come, not in the too

1427. distant future, and conquer Jerusalem.

1428. You know what they're going to do?

1429. They're going to take all this that

  1430. Hezekiah showed them.

1431. Basically, Hezekiah set up his own

  1432. destruction.

1433. But we're going to see here, notice

1434. here in verse 19 of chapter 20 of

1435. 2 Kings, then Hezekiah, then said

1436. Hezekiah unto Isaiah, good is the

1437. word of the Lord which thou hast

  1438. spoken.

1439. And he said, is it not good if peace

1440. and truth be in my days?

1441. I'll let you think on that one for a

  1442. moment.

1443. God tells him that your grandchildren

1444. are going to be facing great

  1445. hardship.

  1446. And Hezekiah's response of, well, it's

  1447. good not my day.

1448. Now, we can talk about that a lot for

  1449. America today.

  1450. Because you know what?

1451. That's one of the problems we have.

  1452. We're a nation that's been blessed.

1453. And we say, well, if judgment comes, as

1454. long as it's not my day, that's fine.

  1455. Pretty short-sighted.

1456. Things to be concerned about.

1457. And we need to understand the

1458. importance of what we're looking at.

1459. You know, Proverbs chapter 4, here

    Proverbs 4 chapter mention

1460. Solomon is instructing Rehoboam, you

1461. might say directly here in verse 20, it

1462. says, my son, attend to my words,

1463. incline thine ear unto my sayings.

1464. Let them not depart from thine eyes.

1465. Keep them in the midst of where?

  1466. Thine heart.

1467. For they are life unto those that find

1468. them in health to all their flesh.

1469. Keep thy heart with all diligent, for

1470. out of it are the issues of life.

  1471. What was Hezekiah's problem?

1472. He had a heart problem.

1473. You know, we can easily get, we can

1474. easily ourselves get a heart problem.

1475. Not the ticking kind of heart either,

1476. but a core issue in our life.

1477. And we see here, as we finish up quick

1478. with Hezekiah here, that the epitaph of

1479. Hezekiah reveals that overall he was a

1480. good king that loved God and desired to

  1481. serve Him.

1482. You know, if you remember back in 2nd

1483. Chronicles chapter 29 in verse 2, it

1484. says, he did that which is right in the

1485. sight of the Lord according to all that

1486. David his father had done.

1487. So in other words, I want you to see that

1488. Hezekiah's, God's report on him said he was a

1489. good man who sought after God.

1490. But you know, you can have good intention of

1491. seeking after God and have a desire and pride

1492. can still become a problem.

  1493. You see that throughout.

1494. That's the reason that people get in trouble in

1495. life is because pride takes over.

1496. Because let's look at the closing statement.

1497. Look at verse 32 of chapter 32 of 2nd

  1498. Chronicles.

  1499. It says,

1500. Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah and his

1501. goodness, behold, they are written in the

1502. vision of the Isaiah the prophet, the son of

1503. Amoz, and in the book of the kings of Judah

  1504. and Israel.

1505. And Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and they

1506. buried him in the chiefest of the sepulchers of

  1507. the sons of David.

1508. And all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem

1509. did honor him in his death, and Manasseh his

1510. son reigned in his stead.

1511. You know, we're going to pick up here in a few

1512. weeks talking about his son.

1513. Because you go from a godly king to one of the

1514. most wicked kings of Judah.

  1515. Big flip.

1516. Makes you wonder, was that attached to Hezekiah's

  1517. pride?

1518. and how his son seen some of these things

  1519. happen that impacted.

1520. We'll take a look and see here in a few weeks

1521. as we pick back up.

  1522. Let's close in prayer.

  1523. Thank you.
