  1. All right, good morning, everybody.

  2. Let's go ahead and we'll find our spots here for the Sunday School Hours.

  3. We just continue in our series here,

  4. !

  5. Lord, we just thank you and praise you for the day,

  6. for the opportunity we have to meet together even in this new year.

  7. Lord, help us just to draw close to you.

  8. Lord, help us to understand the reality and the necessity of faith

  9. and just the dynamic of trusting you even here today,

  10. even in times of tragedy and walking through those things practically in our life.

  11. And Lord, we pray just have your hand upon each one here today

  12. that we might be encouraged and strengthened through the truth of your word.

  13. And we just ask it all in your precious name.

  14. Amen.

  15. All right.

  16. As we see here, you know, we've been looking here at a faith that triumphs,

  17. you know, overcoming life's challenges with the courage from God's word.

  18. You know, as we understand that courage that we need

  19. to trust the Lord in the midst of those challenges.

  20. And the book of Job, you know, I think could be one of the most,

  21. when you look at it from the worldly perspective,

  22. it could be the most depressing book in the Bible.

  23. You know, when you read chapter one, man, it's pretty depressing.

  24. You know, I mean, it is like downhill after downhill.

  25. It's like when Job got on the slide of misery, man,

  26. he greased it up and went off the end.

  27. You know, it's like he just runs through.

  28. It would be except for the fact we have the blessing of seeing the end,

  29. of seeing what God did through it,

  30. how God matured Job.

  31. You know, we're talking this morning about practical sanctification.

  32. You can look at the book of Job this way.

  33. Job was a righteous man who loved God,

  34. but God grew him through the tragedy.

  35. Because Job is more mature in his faith at the end than he is at the beginning.

  36. Those things come about and, you know,

  37. and oftentimes I don't think we really consider all the details of the book of Job,

  38. the suffering that is really present.

  39. But it teaches us, though, that it's just not about suffering,

  40. but God triumphs even when we suffer.

  41. We can mature and grow and become conformed to his image as we can be changed through those things.

  42. And, you know, we find here there's so many elements we could talk about in the book of Job.

  43. You know, it's just some of the preachers of the past spent significant time preaching from the book of Job.

  44. It said the 17th century Scottish preacher George Hutchison preached 316 sermons from the book of Job.

  45. You know, I've yet to reach that point yet.

  46. I think I've hit 75 in the book, but I've never hit 300 and some.

  47. And everybody said amen, right?

  48. Time to move on, preacher.

  49. Another one of Joseph Carl in London took 23 years to preach through the book of Job

  50. that he published as a massive 12-volume set, you know?

  51. So I want you to understand it's not how much, but, you know, there's a lot of things in here to learn

  52. and apply to our life.

  53. Job's friends could learn to be quiet.

  54. Like I said, when you think about the message this morning in the book of Job

  55. and the practical application, there's a lot of things that cross over

  56. of how all those elements come together.

  57. You know, you could gleam a lot from the book, but, you know,

  58. like suffering in our own lives, there's much that we can't fully understand.

  59. And, you know, the book of Job is one of the old records in Scripture,

  60. and it's a found group with the other poetical books in the Bible.

  61. But chronologically, Job would be placed next to Genesis

  62. as the events occurred sometime before or during around the time of Abraham

  63. is what most have figured out or walked through.

  64. And, you know, if you grew up in church, you're probably familiar with the story of Job

  65. and, you know, where a righteous and wealthy father of 10 children lost everything in an instant.

  66. You know, the headline for Job would be devastating.

  67. But we understand that what Job records for us is important because, you know what?

  68. We're going to encounter similar situations in our own lives.

  69. We're going to encounter situations that may not be as tragic as Job's, but yet they may be.

  70. They might not draw us through the challenges in the same way.

  71. But, you know, what we can learn is that we can trust God.

  72. We can trust God in tragedy.

  73. And we look through for that here.

  74. You know, we find here the first thing we're going to look at here is the devotion of Job.

  75. Because, you know, there's a misconception today that if you just serve God, life's going to be great.

  76. You know, there's people who stand up and preach that.

  77. You know what?

  78. As soon as somebody says that, I know they're a false teacher because they haven't read the book.

  79. Will God be with you?

  80. Will God help you through everything in life?

  81. But no place in the Bible that says, trust me and everything's going to be perfect.

  82. Matter of fact, Jesus tells us otherwise.

  83. You're going to have suffering and trials and tribulations.

  84. Because you live in a fallen world.

  85. But God says, I'm going to use those things for your good.

  86. You know, look here this morning at the devotion of Job.

  87. Look here at verse 2.

  88. In Job chapter 1, it says this.

    Job 1 chapter mention

  89. Let's just start at verse 1.

  90. It says, there was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job.

  91. And there's a man that perfect and upright and one that feared God and eschewed evil.

  92. And they were born unto him seven sons and three daughters.

  93. You know, if your children are a heritage of the Lord, Job was rich.

  94. He had ten kids.

  95. He had a vibrant family.

  96. Job was blessed with a large family.

  97. We learn that he was blessed by God.

  98. You know, when we understand that his children were not a burden, but a blessing.

  99. But we see he had a large family.

  100. We see that he was a wealthy man.

  101. Look at verse 3.

  102. It tells us this.

  103. In other words, Job was what everybody wanted to be.

  104. You know, everybody knows today people take wealthy people and people that are on the pinnacle of society and say, that's who we want to be.

  105. You know, everybody knew who Job was.

  106. Job was the guy everybody aspired to be.

  107. Look how God, look what Job had.

  108. Large family.

  109. Large possessions.

  110. Everything's going good in Job's life.

  111. You know, the Bible tells us that he was the greatest in the East.

  112. And he had substance and status.

  113. But you know what God noted?

  114. He made a side note of his substance and his status.

  115. But God made the biggest deal about Job's faith.

  116. Because Job's faith is what made the difference.

  117. It's clear Job's faith was a central component of his life.

  118. You know, notice there in verse 1.

  119. And it says, whose name was Job.

  120. And the man was perfect and upright and one that feared God.

  121. And he skewed evil.

  122. You know, Job was said to be perfect and upright.

  123. Now, I want you to understand, it doesn't mean Job was sinless.

  124. Nobody other than Jesus Christ has ever walked this earth that was sinless.

  125. He is the only one.

  126. But we understand that Job was upright.

  127. This verse is very clear that Job loved the Lord and wanted to do what God had for him.

  128. You know, when we understand Job's significance came from his faith in God.

  129. You know, one of the important things that we can learn about trusting God in tragedy from the life of Job is this,

  130. is make your devotion to God the priority of your life.

  131. Make your devotion to God the priority of your life.

  132. Job's life was not centered around his kids.

  133. It was not centered around his possessions.

  134. As you read through chapter 1, you'll find Job's priority was his relationship to God and his family's relationship to God.

  135. Those other things had to take oversight and had to take, but they were in the right place.

  136. There's nothing wrong with being wealthy.

  137. There's nothing wrong with having a large family or having God's blessing in those areas.

  138. But you know what?

  139. Our relationship to God still supersedes those.

  140. And Job was clear.

  141. Job's family and fortune and health were dear to him.

  142. And he was devastated by their loss.

  143. But ultimately, they weren't the central aspect of his life.

  144. Because as you read through the book of Job, it deals with men and God.

  145. It deals with the reality of how that plays out.

  146. And it's a good reminder even for us, if our possessions are the most significant thing in our lives,

  147. what happens when they break or they're lost?

  148. You know, when things get taken away?

  149. When your position diminishes?

  150. You know, you can have people rise to prominence and disappear into obscurity.

  151. You know, our significance isn't in our status or what happens.

  152. Our families, our marriages, and other important relationships are good.

  153. But our relationship with God is the most important.

  154. You know, Job had substance, but he honored God with it.

  155. To honor the Lord.

  156. You know, Proverbs 3.9 tells us this.

  157. Honor the Lord with thy substance and with the firstfruits of all thine increase.

  158. He had a great family, but he put the Lord before the family.

  159. It says he feared God, you know, and eschewed evil, you know.

  160. Let's look what this looked like.

  161. Look at verse 4 in chapter 1.

  162. It says,

  163. His sons went and feasted in their houses, every one his day.

  164. And he sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.

  165. And it was so when the days of their feasting were gone about that Job sent and sanctified them

  166. and rose up early in the morning and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all.

  167. For Job said,

  168. It may be that my sons have sinned and cursed God in their heart.

  169. Thus did Job continually.

  170. You know what?

  171. Job was concerned about his family.

  172. He was not concerned about them financially as much as he was spiritually.

  173. He wanted them to learn to fear God just as he had.

  174. You know, and we see Job's family gathering.

  175. But Job made a feast.

  176. After the feast, Job made an altar and worshiped the Lord and even interceded on behalf of his kids.

  177. You know, he did that just in case his kids said,

  178. Lord, have mercy on them.

  179. You know what Job knew?

  180. Job knew that kids do things they shouldn't do.

  181. Because he knew who he was.

  182. He knew who his kids were.

  183. But he wanted them.

  184. He prayed for them.

  185. The Bible also tells us that Job askewed or avoided evil.

  186. And actual reverence for God and avoidance and evil are linked together.

  187. You know, at the end of Job there in Job chapter 28, in verse 28, it says,

    Job 28 chapter mention

  188. Unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and depart from evil is understanding.

  189. You know, the fear of the Lord and departing from evil are connected.

  190. You can't separate those things.

  191. And when we understand Job's relationship with God was central to his life.

  192. And it gave him strength for what was to come.

  193. Because trusting God in those difficult days began with trusting God when things were going good.

  194. I want you to understand that if you're going to trust God in the difficulty,

  195. difficulties are going to be easier if you've already put your faith in God before you get to that point.

  196. If you're going to walk with him.

  197. Because we know the second part of Job's life is that we know his devotion, but how about the devastation?

  198. You know, one thing I've learned as you read through the book of Job,

  199. prosperity preachers get killed by the book of Job.

  200. Just slaughtered in their philosophy.

  201. Because you think about God, here's God building up Job saying,

  202. Hey, here's a guy who loves me.

  203. He fears me.

  204. He's trying to do what is right before me.

  205. He worships me the way he ought to worship.

  206. He's doing the right things.

  207. He's got the right focus.

  208. You know, that's quite a cheerleader list from God, isn't it?

  209. But look what happens.

  210. There's a devastation, you know.

  211. Most of the problem is, I think most of us want to live in the first five verses of Job.

  212. When everything's going good.

  213. You know, I don't know about you, that sounds pretty good.

  214. You know, first five verses of Job, let's stop there.

  215. But does it stop there, does it?

  216. It reveals what's going on because unbeknownst to Job, there was something taking place.

  217. Look at verse six of chapter one now.

  218. It says,

  219. Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them.

  220. And the Lord said unto Satan,

  221. Whence comest thou?

  222. And Satan answered the Lord and said,

  223. From going to and fro in the earth and from walking up and down in it.

  224. And the Lord said unto Satan,

  225. Hast thou considered my servant Job?

  226. For there is none like him in the earth,

  227. a perfect and upright man,

  228. one that feareth God and escheweth evil.

  229. And then Satan answered the Lord,

  230. Does Job fear God for not?

  231. You know, we see here that in response to what's happening,

  232. God draws attention to Job's righteousness.

  233. You know, and then Satan asks,

  234. now directly questions Job's motive.

  235. You know,

  236. Doth Job fear God for not?

  237. You know, look at verse 10.

  238. It says this,

  239. Hast thou made a hedge about him and about his house and about all that he hath on every side?

  240. Thou hast blessed the work of his hands and his substance is increased in the land.

  241. You know what?

  242. Job's faith,

  243. Satan said he only trusts you because you've blessed him.

  244. Because of all the good things he's enjoying.

  245. It's the only reason Job trusts you.

  246. Because look at verse 11.

  247. Look at Satan's accusation.

  248. He says this,

  249. But put forth thine hand now and touch all that he hath,

  250. and he will curse thee to thy face.

  251. What's the accusation against Job?

  252. What's Satan's accusation?

  253. Yeah, it's not real.

  254. He says,

  255. Job's faith is a fake.

  256. He's faking it.

  257. It's easy to do that when everything's going good.

  258. You know,

  259. the devil's a master of half-truth.

  260. Because part of what he said is true.

  261. It is easier to trust God when everything's going well.

  262. That's true.

  263. I think we can all agree.

  264. It's easy to be on board.

  265. Well, God's blessing.

  266. Amen.

  267. Trust, praise God, you know.

  268. That's easy.

  269. But the second part that Satan said,

  270. he says,

  271. Hey,

  272. Job will praise you when things are going good,

  273. but you just stop taking so good a care of him

  274. and put him to a test here a little bit,

  275. and he's just going to curse you.

  276. You know,

  277. it's ironic that the Satan really puts forth

  278. what a lot of people have and do in their life.

  279. They trust God when it's easy,

  280. and they don't trust him when it's not.

  281. I think his accusation had some merit,

  282. but you know what?

  283. When our heart is right with God,

  284. we'll trust him even in the tragedy.

  285. Because we find here that God granted permission

  286. for Job's faith to be put to a test.

  287. You know,

  288. how do you find out if something is true?

  289. You know,

  290. it has to be tested.

  291. It has to be put to a test to say,

  292. is it measure up?

  293. Because it's easy to say something,

  294. but it means more when it's actually done.

  295. When we accomplish or do what we ought to do.

  296. You know,

  297. when those things come about,

  298. you know,

  299. why do we test things?

  300. You know,

  301. you think about all the things we test in life,

  302. you know,

  303. it's one of those things that,

  304. you know,

  305. here recently,

  306. you know,

  307. you see a different things being tested,

  308. you know,

  309. a lot of things in the news,

  310. you see rockets being tested.

  311. You know,

  312. why do they not just put something on them

  313. and just stick,

  314. stick them on the,

  315. on the shelf and wait?

  316. Why do they test them?

  317. Why they want to see if it's going to do

  318. or perform the way it was supposed to perform.

  319. The only way,

  320. you know,

  321. if it's genuine and it's going to function

  322. is to test it.

  323. It has to be tested to know if it's true.

  324. You know,

  325. how do we do science?

  326. Somebody doesn't come up with a hypothesis

  327. and say,

  328. I think this is true.

  329. So therefore we can bank on it.

  330. What do they have to do?

  331. They have to put it out.

  332. What?

  333. To a test.

  334. Does it actually produce?

  335. Does it come to fruition?

  336. The same dynamic,

  337. God allows tests in our life

  338. that we might,

  339. he might find

  340. and reveal even to ourselves,

  341. where is our faith?

  342. What do we trust?

  343. You know,

  344. the true quality of our faith

  345. can be only be revealed under pressure.

  346. You know,

  347. I want you to understand

  348. there's no exemption for suffering.

  349. You know,

  350. we live in a generation

  351. that wants an exemption.

  352. You ever know,

  353. everybody wants their exemption.

  354. They want their carve out.

  355. You know,

  356. we want it.

  357. We don't want to have to face this part of it.

  358. You know,

  359. we're coming up to the first of the year.

  360. A lot of people are thinking about taxes.

  361. Everybody wants a tax exemption.

  362. You know,

  363. what part can I be exempt from?

  364. You know,

  365. or parents want exemption

  366. to the rules for their children.

  367. You know,

  368. make an exception for mine.

  369. You know,

  370. it's like they want things played out.

  371. You want those things.

  372. Employees want exemptions

  373. for themselves in work policy.

  374. You know,

  375. you can name a list,

  376. go down the list of things

  377. people want exemption from.

  378. But you know,

  379. in this life,

  380. you're not exempt

  381. from the realities

  382. of suffering.

  383. We're not exempt from it.

  384. You know,

  385. Job was a righteous man

  386. that didn't exclude him

  387. from suffering.

  388. Matter of fact,

  389. you know what God said?

  390. Job qualifies for it.

  391. Job qualifies

  392. to stand the test.

  393. Because you ever notice

  394. something about a test,

  395. let's put it this way.

  396. when you have a test

  397. that happens

  398. and everything goes

  399. as you expected it to go,

  400. how's your response?

  401. You rejoice

  402. when you see the right,

  403. hey,

  404. this is what we worked for,

  405. this is what we laid out,

  406. this is what we expect,

  407. and now it happened.

  408. You know what,

  409. when God put Job

  410. to the test,

  411. God was seeing

  412. if his faith was real

  413. because God knew

  414. Job's heart.

  415. You know what,

  416. God already knew

  417. the answer to the question

  418. before it was asked.

  419. Before the devil tempted him,

  420. you know that God

  421. knew Job's heart?

  422. The Bible tells us

  423. that God knows

  424. the inner things

  425. of your heart.

  426. This test wasn't

  427. for the sake of God.

  428. That's a misconception

  429. of the book of Job.

  430. God didn't do this

  431. for his benefit.

  432. He did this

  433. for Job's benefit.

  434. He allowed it

  435. for his benefit

  436. because you know what,

  437. Job's faith grew

  438. mightily

  439. from the beginning

  440. of the book of Job

  441. to the end

  442. of the book of Job.

  443. There was a practical

  444. sanctification

  445. that took place

  446. in Job's life

  447. through the situation.

  448. You know,

  449. when we understand

  450. these moments

  451. change everything,

  452. you know,

  453. Job could understood

  454. what it was like

  455. to have devastation.

  456. You know,

  457. look at verse 13

  458. in chapter 1.

  459. Now there was a day

  460. when his sons and daughters

  461. were eating and drinking wine

  462. in their eldest brother's house

  463. and there came a messenger

  464. unto Job

  465. and said the oxen

  466. were plowing

  467. and the asses

  468. feeding beside them

  469. and the Sabians

  470. fell upon them

  471. and took them away.

  472. Yea,

  473. they have slain

  474. the servants

  475. with the edge

  476. of the sword

  477. and I am only

  478. escaped alone

  479. to tell thee

  480. and while he was

  481. yet speaking

  482. there came also

  483. another

  484. and said the fire

  485. of God

  486. has fallen from heaven

  487. and burned up

  488. the sheep

  489. and the servants

  490. and consumed them

  491. and I only am

  492. escaped alone

  493. to tell thee

  494. and while he was

  495. yet speaking

  496. there came also

  497. another

  498. and said the Chaldeans

  499. made out three bands

  500. and fell upon the camels

  501. and carried them away

  502. and slain the servants

  503. with the edge

  504. of the sword

  505. and I only

  506. am escaped

  507. escaped alone

  508. to tell thee

  509. and while he was

  510. yet speaking

  511. there came also

  512. another

  513. and said

  514. thy sons

  515. and thy daughters

  516. were eating

  517. and drinking

  518. wine

  519. in their eldest

  520. brother's house

  521. and behold

  522. there came a great

  523. wind from the wilderness

  524. and smote

  525. the four corners

  526. of the house

  527. and it fell upon

  528. the young men

  529. and they are dead

  530. and I only

  531. am escaped

  532. to tell thee

  533. now you talk

  534. about a bad day

  535. you know there's a phrase

  536. that rings out

  537. of each one of them

  538. as the one

  539. was yet speaking

  540. another one

  541. shows up

  542. before he even

  543. got done

  544. with the worst

  545. the bad news

  546. the snowball effect

  547. of problems

  548. just seemed to show up

  549. everything you have

  550. including your family

  551. is gone

  552. now I want you

  553. to think about this

  554. in a single day

  555. in the matter

  556. of minutes

  557. Job lost

  558. all his possessions

  559. he lost

  560. his livelihood

  561. and his family

  562. you know

  563. when we understand

  564. and we know

  565. from the rest

  566. of the story

  567. that was just

  568. Job's immediate loss

  569. as the story

  570. continues

  571. God points out

  572. something about Job

  573. you know

  574. look here at Job

    Job 2 chapter mention

  575. chapter 2

  576. look down at verse 3

  577. and the Lord

  578. said unto Satan

  579. hast thou considered

  580. my servant Job

  581. that there is none

  582. like him in the earth

  583. a perfect

  584. and upright man

  585. one that feareth God

  586. and iskeweth evil

  587. and still he holdeth

  588. fast his integrity

  589. although thou movest

  590. me against him

  591. to destroy him

  592. without cause

  593. you know

  594. think about that

  595. for a moment

  596. he held fast

  597. his integrity

  598. in other words

  599. Job said

  600. I'm not going to

  601. change my faith

  602. or my trust in God

  603. no matter what happens

  604. what's Satan's response

  605. he says

  606. well let's

  607. let's touch his health

  608. the only thing

  609. he had left

  610. and he says

  611. Job's going to

  612. curse you

  613. and die

  614. so God agrees

  615. he says

  616. okay go ahead

  617. and ratchet it up

  618. you know we find

  619. in

  620. look here at verse 6

  621. of chapter 2

  622. and the Lord

  623. said unto Satan

  624. behold

  625. he is in thine hand

  626. but save his life

  627. so Satan went forth

  628. from the presence

  629. of the Lord

  630. and smote Job

  631. with sore boils

  632. from the sole of his foot

  633. unto his crown

  634. and he took a pot shirt

  635. to scrape himself

  636. withal

  637. and he sat down

  638. amongst the ashes

  639. you know

  640. Job here is covered

  641. with boils

  642. and we find

  643. as you read through there

  644. the boils got infected

  645. and you know

  646. when your body's

  647. covered with boils

  648. and they get infected

  649. it begins to affect

  650. everything about you

  651. you know the pain

  652. and the agony

  653. of that

  654. and you know

  655. then we find

  656. that Job's wife

  657. comes

  658. you know boy

  659. she was an encouragement

  660. Job you're a bum

  661. just curse God

  662. and die

  663. that's a help meet

  664. for you

  665. what a challenge

  666. then his friends

  667. show up

  668. his friends show up

  669. and initially

  670. they did pretty good

  671. for seven days

  672. they just sat there

  673. and wept with him

  674. and comforted him

  675. you know sometimes

  676. you'll find something

  677. very important here

  678. in the book of Job

  679. you know

  680. his friends just came

  681. to be with him

  682. you know one of the best

  683. things you can do

  684. to help a fellow

  685. somebody else

  686. in time of grief

  687. is be present

  688. presence speaks higher

  689. than anything else

  690. his friends came

  691. look at verse 11

  692. of chapter 2

  693. now when Job's

  694. three friends

  695. heard all this evil

  696. was upon him

  697. they came everyone

  698. from his own place

  699. and he lists them

  700. out there

  701. Ephaz the Temamite

  702. and Bildad the Shuhite

  703. and the Zophar

  704. the Namahite

  705. for they had made

  706. an appointment

  707. together to come

  708. to mourn with him

  709. and to comfort him

  710. and they had lifted up

  711. their eyes afar off

  712. and knew him not

  713. and lifted up their voice

  714. and wept

  715. and they rent

  716. everyone his mantle

  717. and sprinkled dust

  718. upon their heads

  719. towards heaven

  720. so they sat down

  721. with him upon the ground

  722. seven days

  723. and seven nights

  724. now here's some good

  725. advice for you

  726. when it comes to

  727. helping somebody grieving

  728. notice what they did

  729. none spake a word

  730. unto him

  731. I'll put a little

  732. bit of thing

  733. sometimes the best

  734. thing you can say

  735. is nothing

  736. but be present

  737. because you know

  738. what one of the

  739. tendencies when

  740. something bad happens

  741. we usually say

  742. something dumb

  743. you know

  744. that's not really

  745. helpful

  746. if you want to

  747. say something

  748. say let's pray

  749. together

  750. or just pray for

  751. them

  752. because what you

  753. say is probably

  754. not going to

  755. solve their problem

  756. or make them

  757. feel any better

  758. anyways

  759. you know

  760. presence makes

  761. a difference

  762. presence is

  763. important

  764. why did they

  765. do that

  766. for they saw

  767. that his grief

  768. was very great

  769. you know

  770. it wasn't

  771. long though

  772. after seven days

  773. they began to

  774. theorize

  775. okay what's

  776. going on

  777. this is that

  778. helpful thing

  779. that sometimes

  780. people hurry

  781. into you know

  782. they begin to

  783. Monday morning

  784. quarterback the

  785. situation you know

  786. and we find here

  787. through the next

  788. chapters you know

  789. chapters three

  790. through thirty one

  791. Job provided

  792. dialogue between

  793. Job and his

  794. friends and the

  795. main sticking point

  796. in this extended

  797. dialogue was the

  798. repeated insistence

  799. that Job was

  800. suffering because he

  801. did something wrong

  802. you ever notice

  803. that's our nature

  804. to go that

  805. direction

  806. why is God

  807. allowing this

  808. well they must

  809. have something

  810. they need to

  811. deal with

  812. now I want you

  813. to understand

  814. that may be the

  815. case but you

  816. know what there's

  817. a 50-50 shot

  818. or greater it's

  819. not

  820. we find here

  821. that Job's

  822. friend took a

  823. doctrinally

  824. correct truth that

  825. God will deal

  826. with those that

  827. sin he'll

  828. chastise those

  829. that need to be

  830. corrected

  831. and sometimes

  832. suffering is a

  833. result of sin

  834. and turned it

  835. into a universal

  836. maxim that

  837. suffering is always

  838. the result of sin

  839. you know what

  840. Job didn't do

  841. anything he

  842. experienced great

  843. suffering the

  844. Bible didn't say

  845. he was perfect

  846. but his heart was

  847. perfect before God

  848. because he says

  849. God I'm going to

  850. trust you and

  851. you're going to be

  852. the priority you

  853. know they Job's

  854. friends did something

  855. you know the Bible

  856. tells us in Romans

  857. 12-15 it says

  858. rejoice with them

  859. that do rejoice

  860. and weep with

  861. them that weep

  862. you know what

  863. some weeks are

  864. like that

  865. this last week

  866. we had two

  867. funerals

  868. you weep with

  869. those who weep

  870. but you know

  871. what this week

  872. we had a new

  873. life

  874. got a new

  875. baby Pierce

  876. you know what

  877. Romans 12

  878. explains last

  879. week

  880. weep with those

  881. who weep

  882. rejoice with

  883. those who rejoice

  884. you know those

  885. are things that

  886. are just part of

  887. life

  888. sometimes in the

  889. same week

  890. sometimes in the

  891. same time frame

  892. those things are

  893. going to happen

  894. but I want you

  895. to understand

  896. someone's suffering

  897. isn't just a

  898. generic formula

  899. we need to

  900. understand what's

  901. taking place

  902. in this you know

  903. because reducing

  904. that to a formula

  905. can be one of the

  906. most painful

  907. responses to a

  908. friend who's

  909. hurting

  910. because even

  911. though something

  912. may be true

  913. it can be used

  914. unwisely

  915. you know we can

  916. apply another part

  917. of our message

  918. this morning

  919. study to be

  920. quiet

  921. we see the

  922. devastation of

  923. his life

  924. but also see the

  925. declaration of

  926. truth

  927. because how

  928. did Job

  929. respond to

  930. the devastation

  931. that turned

  932. his life

  933. upside down

  934. you know

  935. I don't know

  936. about you

  937. but I think

  938. we can all

  939. agree Job's

  940. life went

  941. from one

  942. direction to

  943. the other

  944. pretty quickly

  945. I mean

  946. you talk about

  947. getting kicked

  948. out of the

  949. pan into

  950. the fire

  951. I mean

  952. it's like

  953. life totally

  954. upside down

  955. look at

  956. verse back

  957. in chapter

  958. one look

  959. at verse

  960. 20

  961. then Job

  962. arose

  963. and rent

  964. his mantle

  965. and shaved

  966. his head

  967. and fell

  968. down upon

  969. the ground

  970. now I want

  971. you to see

  972. it wasn't

  973. that Job

  974. didn't go to

  975. the Lord

  976. just bouncing

  977. and giddy

  978. but Job

  979. was grieving

  980. his heart

  981. was broken

  982. life was

  983. devastated

  984. that's the

  985. description

  986. but you know

  987. what he did

  988. in the midst

  989. of his grieving

  990. he came

  991. and worshipped

  992. the Lord

  993. he fell

  994. on the

  995. ground

  996. and worshipped

  997. and said

  998. notice here

  999. in the next

  1000. verse he says

  1001. naked came

  1002. I out of

  1003. my mother's

  1004. womb

  1005. and naked

  1006. shall I

  1007. return

  1008. thither

  1009. the Lord

  1010. gave

  1011. and the

  1012. Lord

  1013. taketh

  1014. away

  1015. blessed

  1016. be the

  1017. name

  1018. of the

  1019. Lord

  1020. now notice

  1021. verse

  1022. 22

  1023. in all

  1024. this

  1025. Job

  1026. sinned

  1027. not

  1028. nor

  1029. charged

  1030. God

  1031. foolishly

  1032. you know

  1033. Job

  1034. understood

  1035. even though

  1036. he had

  1037. grief

  1038. often times

  1039. in our

  1040. mind

  1041. grief

  1042. and worship

  1043. are

  1044. incongruent

  1045. with one

  1046. another

  1047. when I'm

  1048. grieving

  1049. how can

  1050. I

  1051. worship

  1052. you know

  1053. no matter

  1054. what's

  1055. going on

  1056. in your

  1057. life

  1058. God

  1059. hasn't

  1060. changed

  1061. God's

  1062. still

  1063. the

  1064. same

  1065. he's

  1066. still

  1067. the

  1068. one

  1069. that

  1070. is

  1071. over

  1072. all

  1073. things

  1074. in

  1075. all

  1076. the

  1077. things

  1078. when

  1079. everything

  1080. of

  1081. Job's

  1082. life

  1083. was

  1084. stripped

  1085. away

  1086. he

  1087. chose

  1088. response

  1089. was

  1090. commendable

  1091. but you

  1092. know

  1093. what I

  1094. want you

  1095. to

  1096. understand

  1097. you can

  1098. have

  1099. faith

  1100. in

  1101. God

  1102. and

  1103. still

  1104. have

  1105. questions

  1106. roll

  1107. around

  1108. in

  1109. your

  1110. head

  1111. what we're

  1112. talking

  1113. about

  1114. here

  1115. is

  1116. not

  1117. some

  1118. blind

  1119. cheering

  1120. speech

  1121. because

  1122. chapter

  1123. three

  1124. you'll

  1125. find

  1126. that

  1127. Job

  1128. was

  1129. suffering

  1130. inside

  1131. even

  1132. though

  1133. he

  1134. trusted

  1135. God

  1136. he

  1137. didn't

  1138. understand

  1139. you

  1140. know

  1141. Job

  1142. chapter

  1143. three

  1144. he

  1145. asked

  1146. the

  1147. question

  1148. why

  1149. died

  1150. I

  1151. not

  1152. from

  1153. the

  1154. womb

  1155. in

  1156. other

  1157. words

  1158. Job

  1159. says

  1160. if

  1161. this

  1162. was

  1163. going

  1164. to

  1165. happen

  1166. to

  1167. me

  1168. why

  1169. didn't

  1170. God

  1171. just

  1172. take

  1173. my

  1174. life

  1175. he

  1176. says

  1177. naked

  1178. I

  1179. came

  1180. in

  1181. naked

  1182. I

  1183. came

  1184. out

  1185. I

  1186. could

  1187. have

  1188. stopped

  1189. right

  1190. there

  1191. I

  1192. could

  1193. have

  1194. ended

  1195. with

  1196. nothing

  1197. right

  1198. there

  1199. later

  1200. on

  1201. in

  1202. chapter

  1203. 23

  1204. in

  1205. Job

  1206. we

  1207. find

  1208. that

  1209. his

  1210. complaint

  1211. was

  1212. bitter

  1213. !

  1214. Oh

  1215. that I

  1216. knew

  1217. that

  1218. I

  1219. might

  1220. find

  1221. him

  1222. that

  1223. I

  1224. might

  1225. come

  1226. even

  1227. to

  1228. his

  1229. seat

  1230. to

  1231. understand

  1232. that

  1233. declaration

  1234. of

  1235. truth

  1236. we

  1237. need

  1238. to

  1239. understand

  1240. what

  1241. God

  1242. knows

  1243. for

  1244. Job

  1245. many

  1246. of

  1247. his

  1248. questions

  1249. were

  1250. prompted

  1251. by

  1252. his

  1253. sense

  1254. of

  1255. God's

  1256. absence

  1257. he's

  1258. asking

  1259. God

  1260. I

  1261. trust

  1262. you

  1263. but

  1264. where

  1265. are

  1266. you

  1267. you

  1268. know

  1269. that's

  1270. a

  1271. legitimate

  1272. question

  1273. we

  1274. often

  1275. have

  1276. God

  1277. I

  1278. trust

  1279. you

  1280. but

  1281. why

  1282. aren't

  1283. you

  1284. showing

  1285. yourself

  1286. mighty

  1287. in

  1288. this

  1289. look

  1290. over

  1291. to

  1292. chapter

  1293. 23

  1294. we

  1295. look

  1296. down

  1297. here

  1298. at

  1299. verse

  1300. a

  1301. it

  1302. says

  1303. behold

  1304. I

  1305. go

  1306. forward

  1307. and

  1308. he

  1309. is

  1310. not

  1311. there

  1312. and

  1313. backward

  1314. I

  1315. cannot

  1316. perceive

  1317. him

  1318. on

  1319. the

  1320. left

  1321. hand

  1322. where

  1323. he

  1324. doth

  1325. work

  1326. but

  1327. I

  1328. cannot

  1329. hide

  1330. behold

  1331. him

  1332. he

  1333. hideth

  1334. himself

  1335. on

  1336. the

  1337. right

  1338. hand

  1339. and

  1340. I

  1341. cannot

  1342. see

  1343. him

  1344. in

  1345. other

  1346. words

  1347. Job

  1348. says

  1349. I

  1350. know

  1351. God

  1352. is

  1353. there

  1354. but

  1355. I

  1356. don't

  1357. feel

  1358. like

  1359. he's

  1360. there

  1361. you

  1362. know

  1363. what

  1364. that's

  1365. our

  1366. feelings

  1367. sometimes

  1368. come to

  1369. the

  1370. surface

  1371. on

  1372. that

  1373. you

  1374. know

  1375. Habakkuk

  1376. the prophet

  1377. in chapter

  1378. 1

  1379. verse 2

  1380. says

  1381. oh

  1382. Lord

  1383. how

  1384. long

  1385. shall

  1386. I

  1387. cry

  1388. and

  1389. wilt

  1390. thou

  1391. not

  1392. hear

  1393. even

  1394. cry

  1395. out

  1396. to

  1397. thee

  1398. of

  1399. violence

  1400. and

  1411. wilt thou

  1412. forget

  1413. me

  1414. oh

  1415. Lord

  1416. forever

  1417. how

  1418. long

  1419. wilt

  1420. hide

  1421. !

  1422. they

  1423. face

  1424. from

  1425. me

  1426. you

  1427. know

  1428. when we

  1429. experience

  1430. such

  1431. these

  1432. times

  1433. in life

  1434. it's

  1435. important

  1436. to

  1437. remember

  1438. that

  1439. just

  1440. because

  1441. God

  1442. is

  1443. not

  1444. apparent

  1445. to

  1446. us

  1447. doesn't

  1448. mean

  1449. he's

  1450. not

  1451. aware

  1452. of

  1453. us

  1454. Job

  1455. couldn't

  1456. perceive

  1457. God's

  1458. presence

  1459. but

  1460. you know

  1461. what

  1462. as we

  1463. read

  1464. through

  1465. the

  1466. book

  1467. of

  1468. Job

  1469. you

  1470. know

  1471. what

  1472. God

  1473. was

  1474. there

  1475. all

  1476. along

  1477. God

  1478. was

  1479. there

  1480. God

  1481. knew

  1482. what

  1483. was

  1484. happening

  1485. you

  1486. know

  1487. think

  1488. about

  1489. when

  1490. the

  1491. children

  1492. of

  1493. Israel

  1494. were

  1495. suffering

  1496. in

  1497. Egypt

  1503. 3

  1504. Exodus

    Exodus 3 chapter mention

  1505. chapter

  1506. 3

  1507. That's

  1508. God's

  1509. perspective

  1510. of what

  1511. was

  1512. happening

  1513. what

  1514. was

  1515. the

  1516. perspective

  1517. of

  1518. the

  1519. children

  1520. of

  1521. Israel

  1522. at

  1523. that

  1524. point

  1525. God

  1526. where

  1527. are

  1528. you

  1529. do

  1530. you

  1531. know

  1532. that

  1533. we're

  1534. suffering

  1535. do

  1536. you

  1537. know

  1538. that

  1539. we're

  1540. going

  1541. through

  1542. this

  1543. where

  1544. are

  1545. you

  1546. you

  1547. know

  1548. we

  1549. understand

  1550. Job

  1551. had

  1552. questions

  1553. and he

  1554. wanted

  1555. to

  1556. know

  1557. why

  1558. these

  1559. calamities

  1560. had

  1561. befallen

  1562. him

  1563. and

  1564. throughout

  1565. the

  1566. heart

  1567. breaks

  1568. of the

  1569. chapters

  1570. of the

  1571. book

  1572. of Job

  1573. Job

  1574. questions

  1575. himself

  1576. he

  1577. questions

  1578. God

  1579. and he

  1580. questions

  1581. why

  1582. at the

  1583. end of

  1584. the

  1585. book

  1586. though

  1587. God

  1588. reveals

  1589. himself

  1590. to

  1591. Job

  1592. but

  1593. rather

  1594. than

  1595. answering

  1596. Job's

  1597. questions

  1598. he

  1599. asked

  1600. Job

  1601. some

  1602. questions

  1603. look over

  1604. to

  1605. chapter

  1606. 38

  1607. Job

    Job 38 chapter mention

  1608. chapter

  1609. 38

  1610. and it

  1611. says

  1612. and the

  1613. Lord

  1614. answered

  1615. Job

  1616. out of

  1617. the

  1618. whirlwind

  1619. and said

  1620. who

  1621. is

  1622. this

  1623. that

  1624. darkeneth

  1625. counsels

  1626. by words

  1627. without

  1628. knowledge

  1629. gird up

  1630. now thy

  1631. loins

  1632. like a

  1633. man

  1634. for I

  1635. will

  1636. demand

  1637. of thee

  1638. and answer

  1639. thou

  1640. me

  1641. now think

  1642. about that

  1643. God looks

  1644. at Job

  1645. in his

  1646. misery

  1647. and says

  1648. hey get

  1649. up

  1650. quit

  1651. wathering

  1652. in your

  1653. misery

  1654. there's

  1655. some more

  1656. good advice

  1657. for you

  1658. grieving

  1659. is okay

  1660. but there

  1661. comes a

  1662. point when

  1663. you got

  1664. to get

  1665. up

  1666. you got

  1667. to get

  1668. up

  1669. and get

  1670. moving

  1671. Job

  1672. God

  1673. looks

  1674. at Job

  1675. and he

  1676. tells him

  1677. gird up

  1678. thy loins

  1679. like a

  1680. man

  1681. for I

  1682. will

  1683. demand

  1684. of thee

  1685. and answer

  1686. thou

  1687. me

  1688. notice

  1689. this question

  1690. he says

  1691. where was thou

  1692. when I laid

  1693. the foundation

  1694. of the earth

  1695. declare if thou

  1696. hast understanding

  1697. who hath laid

  1698. the measure

  1699. thereof

  1700. as thou

  1701. knowest

  1702. for whom

  1703. hast stretched

  1704. thy line

  1705. upon it

  1706. whereupon are

  1707. the foundations

  1708. thereof

  1709. fastened

  1710. or who

  1711. laid the

  1712. cornerstone

  1713. thereof

  1714. when the

  1715. morning stars

  1716. sang together

  1717. and all the

  1718. sons of God

  1719. shouted for joy

  1720. he continues

  1721. on for

  1722. 64 more

  1723. verses

  1724. simply this

  1725. God revealed

  1726. to Job

  1727. you don't

  1728. know as

  1729. much as

  1730. you think

  1731. you know

  1732. he's

  1733. questioning

  1734. God

  1735. who

  1736. is

  1737. omniscient

  1738. because

  1739. you know

  1740. what

  1741. all the

  1742. questions

  1743. God

  1744. asked

  1745. Job

  1746. you know

  1747. who

  1748. knows

  1749. the

  1750. answer

  1751. to

  1752. him

  1753. God

  1754. he

  1755. understood

  1756. then in

  1757. chapter

  1758. 40

  1759. God

  1760. turns

  1761. his

  1762. question

  1763. toward

  1764. answers

  1765. of

  1766. application

  1767. and

  1768. notice

  1769. here

  1770. Job

  1771. 40

  1772. in

  1773. verse

  1774. 1

  1775. moreover

  1776. the

  1777. Lord

  1778. answered

  1779. Job

  1780. and said

  1781. shall he

  1782. that

  1783. contended

  1784. with

  1785. the

  1786. Almighty

  1787. instruct

  1788. him

  1789. he

  1790. that

  1791. reproveth

  1792. God

  1793. let

  1794. him

  1795. answer

  1796. it

  1797. then

  1798. Job

  1799. answered

  1800. the

  1801. Lord

  1802. and said

  1803. behold

  1804. I am

  1805. vile

  1806. what

  1807. shall

  1808. I

  1809. answer

  1810. thee

  1811. I

  1812. will

  1813. lay

  1814. my

  1815. hand

  1816. upon

  1817. my

  1818. mouth

  1819. you know

  1820. oftentimes

  1821. we want

  1822. the easy

  1823. answer

  1824. you know

  1825. oftentimes

  1826. the generic

  1827. easy

  1828. answer

  1829. would

  1830. satisfy

  1831. us

  1832. you know

  1833. throughout

  1834. history

  1835. people have

  1836. wanted

  1837. an answer

  1838. to the

  1839. question

  1840. of why

  1841. God

  1842. allows

  1843. suffering

  1844. but

  1845. instead

  1846. of

  1847. revealing

  1848. the answer

  1849. something

  1850. greater

  1851. because

  1852. you know

  1853. even if

  1854. God

  1855. would have

  1856. told

  1857. Job

  1858. all the

  1859. details

  1860. you know

  1861. what

  1862. let's

  1863. just put

  1864. it this

  1865. way

  1866. it would

  1867. have

  1868. did

  1869. this

  1870. to

  1871. Job

  1872. have you

  1873. ever talked

  1874. to somebody

  1875. and explained

  1876. something

  1877. and they

  1878. look at

  1879. you like

  1880. I don't

  1881. have a clue

  1882. what you

  1883. just said

  1884. you know

  1885. basically

  1886. that's

  1887. what God

  1888. is describing

  1889. to Job

  1890. he says

  1891. Job

  1892. if I

  1893. took

  1894. time

  1895. to

  1896. explain

  1897. this

  1898. to

  1899. you

  1900. you

  1901. wouldn't

  1902. grab

  1903. it

  1904. it

  1905. go

  1906. right

  1907. over

  1908. the

  1909. top

  1910. of

  1911. your

  1912. head

  1913. revealed

  1914. himself

  1915. you know

  1916. we want

  1917. our answers

  1918. tied up

  1919. in neat

  1920. packages

  1921. but there's

  1922. nothing

  1923. neat about

  1924. pain

  1925. and suffering

  1926. of the

  1927. world

  1928. and there's

  1929. no way

  1930. we can

  1931. comprehend

  1932. what God

  1933. knows

  1934. if we

  1935. demand

  1936. answers

  1937. to the

  1938. why

  1939. question

  1940. we assume

  1941. that we

  1942. and God

  1943. possess

  1944. equal

  1945. understanding

  1946. that we

  1947. can

  1948. understand

  1949. or

  1950. comprehend

  1951. why

  1952. something

  1953. happens

  1954. you know

  1955. often

  1956. in the

  1957. case

  1958. as in

  1959. the

  1960. case

  1961. of

  1962. Job

  1963. you know

  1964. what

  1965. we never

  1966. receive

  1967. the exact

  1968. reason

  1969. why

  1970. we're

  1971. suffering

  1972. most

  1973. of

  1974. the

  1975. appropriate

  1976. response

  1977. is to

  1978. simply

  1979. trust

  1980. God

  1981. a truth

  1982. that we

  1983. can hold

  1984. on to

  1985. during

  1986. these

  1987. times

  1988. in the

  1989. statement

  1990. I can

  1991. trust

  1992. the

  1993. God

  1994. I know

  1995. with

  1996. the

  1997. details

  1998. I

  1999. don't

  2000. understand

  2001. God

  2002. says

  2003. you can

  2004. know

  2005. me

  2006. and he

  2007. says

  2008. I'll

  2009. need

  2010. to

  2011. trust

  2012. you

  2013. you

  2014. know

  2015. let's

  2016. put

  2017. this

  2018. in a

  2019. practical

  2020. application

  2021. how

  2022. many

  2023. times

  2024. when

  2025. you're

  2026. raising

  2027. your

  2028. children

  2029. do

  2030. your

  2031. kids

  2032. just

  2033. have

  2034. to

  2035. trust

  2036. you

  2037. !

  2038. why

  2039. can't

  2040. I

  2041. do

  2042. that

  2043. you

  2044. know

  2045. what

  2046. when

  2047. kids

  2048. are

  2049. two

  2050. or

  2051. three

  2052. years

  2053. old

  2054. you

  2055. can't

  2056. you

  2057. can

  2058. give

  2059. them

  2060. a full

  2061. explanation

  2062. of why

  2063. the

  2064. ramifications

  2065. of their

  2066. choices

  2067. of doing

  2068. this

  2069. you know

  2070. what

  2071. the

  2072. kid

  2073. look at

  2074. you

  2075. like

  2076. you

  2077. know

  2078. what

  2079. the

  2080. same

  2081. application

  2082. goes

  2083. to

  2084. Job

  2085. we

  2086. stand

  2087. before

  2088. God

  2089. as a

  2090. two

  2091. or

  2092. three

  2093. year

  2094. old

  2095. God

  2096. give

  2097. me

  2098. why

  2099. why

  2100. why

  2101. why

  2102. and

  2103. God

  2104. going

  2105. I

  2106. know

  2107. the

  2108. details

  2109. in the

  2110. application

  2111. here

  2112. but

  2113. you

  2114. know

  2115. what

  2116. if

  2117. I

  2118. spent

  2119. time

  2120. to

  2121. try

  2122. to

  2123. tell

  2124. you

  2125. it's

  2126. just

  2127. going

  2128. to

  2129. go

  2130. over

  2131. your

  2132. head

  2133. will

  2134. you

  2135. trust

  2136. me

  2137. what

  2138. do

  2139. we

  2140. expect

  2141. as

  2142. parents

  2143. as

  2144. our

  2145. kids

  2146. these

  2147. are

  2148. the

  2149. rules

  2150. this

  2151. is

  2152. the

  2153. direction

  2154. trust

  2155. me

  2156. now

  2157. there

  2158. comes

  2159. a

  2160. time

  2161. when

  2162. kids

  2163. need

  2164. more

  2165. answers

  2166. but

  2167. I

  2168. want

  2169. you

  2170. to

  2171. understand

  2172. that's

  2173. maturity

  2174. because

  2175. they

  2176. reach

  2177. !

  2178. a

  2179. point

  2180. where

  2181. they're

  2182. more

  2183. know

  2184. the

  2185. unknown

  2186. scares

  2187. us

  2188. but

  2189. dwelling

  2190. on

  2191. the

  2192. things

  2193. we

  2194. don't

  2195. know

  2196. or

  2197. don't

  2198. understand

  2199. doesn't

  2200. change

  2201. the

  2202. outcome

  2203. instead

  2204. we

  2205. should

  2206. dwell

  2207. on

  2208. who

  2209. we

  2210. do

  2211. know

  2212. and

  2213. what

  2214. we

  2215. know

  2216. to

  2217. be

  2218. true

  2219. about

  2220. him

  2221. you

  2222. know

  2223. to

  2224. trust

  2225. God

  2226. let's

  2227. look

  2228. here

  2229. turn

  2230. to

  2231. Job

  2232. 13

  2233. we're

  2234. out

  2235. of

  2236. time

  2237. this

  2238. morning

  2239. notice

  2240. what

  2241. Job

  2242. says

  2243. he

  2244. says

  2245. though

  2246. he

  2247. slay

  2248. me

  2249. yet

  2250. will

  2251. I

  2252. !

  2253. trust

  2254. what

  2255. we

  2256. don't

  2257. understand

  2258. we

  2259. must

  2260. declare

  2261. the

  2262. truth

  2263. that

  2264. we

  2265. know

  2266. about

  2267. God

  2268. about

  2269. what

  2270. God

  2271. has

  2272. declared

  2273. what

  2274. God

  2275. has

  2276. provided

  2277. and

  2278. he

  2279. says

  2280. that

  2281. he's

  2282. there

  2283. he'll

  2284. never

  2285. leave

  2286. us

  2287. or

  2288. forsake

  2289. us

  2290. let's

  2291. pray
