  1. Go ahead and turn your Bibles over to Genesis chapter 32.

    Genesis 32 chapter mention

  2. ! I've entitled the lesson, Takeaways from a Wrestling Match.

  3. ! I've just been studying the life of Jacob.

  4. !

  5. Where Jacob is, where we'll find him this morning.

  6. Go ahead and stand with me, if you will.

  7. We'll start reading in chapter 32, verse 24.

  8. The Bible says,

  9. And Jacob was left alone, and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.

  10. And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh,

  11. and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint, and he wrestled with him.

  12. And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh.

  13. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.

  14. And he said unto him, What is thy name?

  15. And he said, Jacob.

  16. And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel.

  17. For as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.

  18. And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name.

  19. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name?

  20. And he blessed him there.

  21. And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel, for I have seen God face to face, and my life

  22. is preserved.

  23. And as he passed over Peniel, the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh.

  24. Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow

  25. of the thigh unto this day, because he touched the hollow of Jacob's thigh, and the sinew that

  26. shrank.

  27. Let's pray.

  28. Dear Heavenly Father, I just thank you for this opportunity that we have to come to your

  29. house and worship you.

  30. Lord, I just, I thank you, Lord, for everyone who's here.

  31. Lord, I just ask that our heart would be open to what you have for us this morning.

  32. I pray that you would calm my nerves and guide my tongue and just bring to memory everything

  33. I've studied.

  34. I thank you and I love you.

  35. In Jesus' name, amen.

  36. You can go ahead and be seated.

  37. As you read through scripture, you find out about Jacob.

  38. He was a worker, and he stayed busy.

  39. He was constantly working.

  40. And I think one interesting trait about him, and I think this is interesting in a lot of

  41. characters in the Bible, because one thing about scripture is that it doesn't shy away

  42. from people's flaws.

  43. And I'm thankful for that, because I've had many.

  44. And if God can use them, he can use me.

  45. And I think one thing that makes Jacob extraordinary is he had a responsive cord in his heart to what

  46. God had for him.

  47. You know, it's ironic where we find Jacob 20 years previous to where we find him in scripture.

  48. He's running away from his brother Esau.

  49. He had stolen the birthright.

  50. He had cheated his brother out of a blessing.

  51. And Esau said, I'm going to kill him.

  52. And so he ran.

  53. The Bible says all he had was a staff.

  54. And he took off.

  55. And he goes to Laban.

  56. His mom says, go to Laban, my brother, and stay there.

  57. And when your brother's wrath is gone, I'll come and get you, and it'll be safe.

  58. So for 20 years, Jacob is with his uncle Laban.

  59. And now we see that he's fleeing from Laban, and he's going to be running right into Esau.

  60. We see in this text here, the Bible says in verse 24, that he was left alone.

  61. And I was thinking, we can't run from our past, our mistakes.

  62. They don't forget us.

  63. They're going to catch up with us one of these days.

  64. And Jacob is in this point.

  65. He's alone.

  66. He's scared.

  67. You know, earlier in this chapter, he's trying to make a plan.

  68. See, Jacob's name, it means heel grabber.

  69. The Bible says that Esau was born first.

  70. He was red and hairy.

  71. And they said, hey, he's red and hairy.

  72. We'll just call him Esau.

  73. And then it says that Jacob was holding on to Esau's thigh when he was born.

  74. And they're like, well, isn't that cute?

  75. He's a little heel grabber.

  76. That's what we'll call him, heel grabber.

  77. Jacob.

  78. Jacob's whole life, he was a heel grabber.

  79. That means he trips people up.

  80. He schemes.

  81. He bargains.

  82. He does whatever he can to get his way.

  83. You know, I know I've been guilty of that in my own life.

  84. And I'm sure many of you have as well.

  85. We find Jacob here.

  86. He's being left alone.

  87. He had already had a game plan.

  88. He knows he's going to run into his brother Esau.

  89. He's scared for his life.

  90. Esau, he believes Esau is going to kill him and take everything he has.

  91. And if you read the chapter before, Jacob has a lot of stuff.

  92. He's got four wives, 11 children.

  93. He's got plenty of flocks, men servants, maid servants.

  94. He's got a lot.

  95. And he's scared that Esau is going to come kill him and take it all.

  96. The reason Jacob is scared is because he knows what he did was wrong.

  97. So he's scared.

  98. The Bible says earlier that he has his messengers.

  99. And he says, hey, this is what you're going to do.

  100. You're going to travel, go see Esau.

  101. Tell him that his servant, Jacob, has these gifts for him.

  102. Tell him to take it.

  103. Try to smooth it over before I get there.

  104. And he plans it all out.

  105. That he'll have one wave first and then another wave.

  106. That way, if that wave gets attacked and Esau is angry, he's got time to run.

  107. The Bible actually tells us later that he has it all set up where he sets up his handmade wives first.

  108. He says, if anyone takes them out, we'll have an opportunity to run.

  109. The Bible says he even has Leah, his ugly wife.

  110. She's up there.

  111. And then he can escape with the pretty wife, Rachel, if anything happens.

  112. You know, this is how he's scheming.

  113. He's planning.

  114. You know, he's a prince of God.

  115. God has promised, I'll be with you.

  116. I'll watch you.

  117. And here he is scheming.

  118. We find him alone.

  119. And sometimes when we're in a wrestling match, God puts us there because he's trying to get a hold of us.

  120. Trying to get our attention.

  121. You know, you read all through scripture people who God had said, I need you to do this.

  122. And what do they do?

  123. Their own thing.

  124. They try to do their own thing.

  125. You know, one of the most famous stories is Jonah, right?

  126. God said, go to Nineveh.

  127. Jonah said, no thanks.

  128. I hate those guys.

  129. I'm going this way to Tarshish.

  130. What happens?

  131. God had a whale ready to swallow him up.

  132. You know, sometimes when I was little, I was like, yep, that's a punishment.

  133. But you know what?

  134. God was just saying, you know, think about this.

  135. If Jonah had been thrown over and there wasn't a whale, what would have happened?

  136. He probably would have eventually drowned.

  137. You know, God had that whale there for a purpose.

  138. To guide him back to what he wants.

  139. This text here, verse 24 of our text, it says,

  140. And he rose up that night and he took his two wives and his two women servants and his 11 sons and passed over the Ford Jabbok.

  141. So he was already asleep.

  142. It says he rose up that night.

  143. Have you ever had that where you're worrying so much about something you just can't sleep?

  144. You're thinking, how am I going to make ends meet?

  145. What about this situation I'm in?

  146. I'm just scared about it.

  147. You can't sleep.

  148. That's where he is.

  149. He's so afraid that he's like, you know what we're going to do?

  150. Because I want my family to be safe.

  151. We're going to cross this river at night.

  152. This river Jabbok.

  153. He doesn't know it, but this word Jabbok in Hebrew, it means an emptying out.

  154. A pouring out.

  155. That's what Jacob's going to do here in a little bit.

  156. He took them and he sent them over the brook and sent over that he had.

  157. And now he's left alone.

  158. Sometimes God wrestles with us because he wants to get us alone so we can center on him.

  159. That's my first point.

  160. So we can center on him.

  161. Jacob couldn't sleep.

  162. He was anxious.

  163. He's operating in unbelief.

  164. You know, it's interesting.

  165. Once Jacob got rid of the cares of this world, you know, he separated himself first off from Laban,

  166. who was a worldly man.

  167. He had idols that he served.

  168. He separated himself from that.

  169. He separated himself from his family and the business of the flocks and everything.

  170. You know, I think of work.

  171. Sometimes we get so caught up with work that we forget what's going on.

  172. We separate ourselves from that.

  173. We just need some quiet time so we can focus on what God has for us.

  174. You know, in verse 20, or I'm sorry, chapter 28 of Genesis, chapter 28, verse 12,

    Genesis 28:12

  175. we're going to just see a couple of things that God promised to Jacob.

  176. Chapter 28, verse 12 says,

  177. Let's look over to chapter 31.

  178. Starting in verse 3, it says,

  179. And the Lord said unto Jacob,

  180. Return unto the land of thy fathers and thy kindred, and I will be with thee.

  181. Look at verse 7 there.

  182. And your father hath deceived me and changed my wages ten times, but God suffered him not to hurt me.

  183. Verse 24,

  184. And God said to Laban,

  185. This is Jacob's uncle.

  186. He's upset.

  187. He's going to go take a posse and follow Jacob.

  188. And it says,

  189. And the Syrian in a dream by night and said unto him,

  190. Take heed that thou speak not to Jacob, either good or bad.

  191. You know, I do believe Laban had some hurt intended for Jacob.

  192. But then he gets there.

  193. Jacob and him talk it out.

  194. Jacob says,

  195. Hey man, you cheated me.

  196. And I was still faithful to you.

  197. I'm taking what's owed.

  198. And I'm going.

  199. And they end up fellowshipping.

  200. They make a vow to each other that they're not going to hurt each other.

  201. You know, and he was very bold in that.

  202. And now we see he's afraid.

  203. He's afraid of Esau.

  204. You know, so many times we have the benefit of seeing the rest of the story.

  205. But Jacob doesn't see that yet.

  206. He's still in that wrestling match.

  207. He's scared of the Esau in his life.

  208. You know, how many times are we so focused on the Esau that we don't see anything else?

  209. You know, he's scared because his mom said,

  210. I'll come and get you when everything is good.

  211. I'll come and get you when his anger is gone.

  212. Well, his mom died.

  213. She's never come and got him.

  214. So in his mind, he's still thinking,

  215. he's still angry and I have to go by.

  216. He's going to get me.

  217. You know, he's going to kill me.

  218. He's going to take my wives, put them into slavery.

  219. He's going to take my sons.

  220. He'll probably kill them.

  221. He'll take everything I've worked these last 20 years for.

  222. It's all going to be for nothing.

  223. And God tells him, I'm with you.

  224. Earlier in our text, verse 32, or chapter 32, starting reading verse 1,

  225. it says,

  226. That kind of means two camps.

  227. Jacob had his camp and God had his host of angels.

  228. You know, how easy is it?

  229. You know, how many times have we read about the children of Israel?

  230. God performs a miracle and then they start complaining.

  231. And if you're like me, you're like, what a bunch of idiots.

  232. You know, if he took you out of Egypt, he got you through the Red Sea,

  233. he's going to take care of you.

  234. He promises he will.

  235. And they immediately, oh, God has forsaken us.

  236. It would be better to be a slave back in Egypt.

  237. How many times do we do that?

  238. God says, you know, I have plans for you.

  239. And we immediately, oh no, he can't take care of it.

  240. You know, he's not big enough.

  241. We focus on the Esau, but we miss what God is trying to do.

  242. The will of God will never lead us where the power of God can't protect and provide for us.

  243. You know, God allows trials to shape us to his image.

  244. Ephesians chapter 1, turn there real quick.

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  245. Verse 11.

  246. In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will.

  247. God already knows these things.

  248. Let's turn to Romans chapter 8.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  249. Many of us could probably quote this verse.

  250. Romans chapter 8, verse 28.

    Romans 8:28

  251. And we'll read verse 29.

  252. And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose.

  253. For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his son,

  254. that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.

  255. The beginning of Psalm 46.10 says,

  256. Be still and know that I am God.

  257. Sometimes we just need to be in a quiet place, alone, so we can hear God.

  258. The second thing I see here in this text,

  259. not only does God's purposes in our trials is to center us on him, but to cultivate perseverance.

  260. You know, as I was reading this, I was thinking to myself,

  261. why now is God trying to get a hold of Jacob?

  262. You know, why did God allow 20 years of Laban cheating him?

  263. If you are familiar with that account,

  264. Jacob says,

  265. Hey, Laban, I'm your sister's son.

  266. I'm supposed to camp out here.

  267. And I see this girl, Rachel, and I like her, and I want to marry her.

  268. And Laban's like,

  269. Sounds good to me.

  270. Let's make it happen.

  271. So he says,

  272. Here's what I want you to do.

  273. You work seven years for me, and you can marry Rachel.

  274. The Bible says that Jacob's love for Rachel was so much that seven years,

  275. it just seemed like a couple of days to him.

  276. The time comes, they get married, and guess what?

  277. It's not Rachel.

  278. It's Leah.

  279. Jacob is upset about that.

  280. And you know what Laban says?

  281. I don't know where you're from, but here in this country,

  282. the firstborn has the preference.

  283. You know, it's ironic, because what did Jacob do?

  284. He stole that firstborn from his brother.

  285. So Laban said,

  286. If you want to marry Rachel, same deal.

  287. You work for me for seven years, and you can have her.

  288. You know, that wasn't ideal.

  289. And if you read Scripture and you find out,

  290. Rachel was not on the same page with Jacob spiritually.

  291. She stole her father's idols.

  292. And who came from Leah?

  293. Christ.

  294. You know, that's pretty interesting.

  295. That was something, you know, Rachel gets a lot of attention for being beautiful,

  296. but Leah was the one that she was closest to Jacob.

  297. You know, why now?

  298. Why does God allow this trial now?

  299. And I think it's because he gives us grace.

  300. You know, that's one thing I've had to learn a lot of.

  301. It's easy to question God, right?

  302. Why are you allowing this to happen?

  303. You know, you allowed this person to do this to me,

  304. and why is this allowed?

  305. Because God's grace.

  306. You know, for me, anyway, there's somebody in my past,

  307. they hurt me big time.

  308. And I would question, why did God allow that to happen?

  309. Well, you know what?

  310. God gives them grace just like he gives me grace.

  311. And humanly speaking, I think,

  312. I'm not as bad as that guy.

  313. So if God is willing to give that guy that much grace,

  314. how much more grace is he willing to give me?

  315. James 1 forces,

  316. but let patience have her perfect work,

  317. that you may be perfect and entire,

  318. wanting nothing.

  319. God wants our endurance to mature us in our walk with him.

  320. You know, think about, we're talking about wrestling.

  321. Wrestling.

  322. I remember doing that with my dad.

  323. We have videos.

  324. My brother and I, he's on his back.

  325. He's holding one of us up.

  326. You know, each of our feet are here,

  327. and he's holding us here.

  328. And then on his feet, he's pushing another one,

  329. and we're running, we're having a good time.

  330. And I got to thinking about wrestling.

  331. You know, as a kid, what did wrestling teach me?

  332. My dad also used to wrestle,

  333. and he taught us some things as we grew up.

  334. But first off, wrestling teaches accountability

  335. for failures and successes.

  336. You know, you have to work hard.

  337. If you ask wrestlers, you know, if they lose,

  338. they can probably tell you,

  339. oh, maybe I didn't train enough,

  340. maybe I didn't do that.

  341. And if they won, they said,

  342. well, this is what I did.

  343. I saw this weakness.

  344. I exposed it.

  345. You know, there's accountability.

  346. There's mental fortitude.

  347. Sometimes you have to push through exhaustive work,

  348. and you have to push through

  349. when you're facing adversity.

  350. You know, I can remember,

  351. this was when I was younger,

  352. but my dad, you know, he used to do this thing.

  353. Maybe some of you dads have done this.

  354. But he's straddled over me.

  355. He's got my arms raised up above my head.

  356. He'd maybe lift my shirt up

  357. and start giving me a pink belly.

  358. And then he'd do the whole, you know,

  359. and I'm like, and he'd start,

  360. and I'm like, oh no, gross.

  361. You know, but it taught me,

  362. you know, sometimes you have to push through things

  363. you don't like.

  364. You know, he kind of roughed us a little bit,

  365. but it taught us discipline, sacrifice,

  366. how to delay gratification.

  367. You know, if you want to win,

  368. there's constant effort put in there.

  369. You can't just win just because you show up.

  370. You have to put some work in, you know,

  371. and if you want to win,

  372. that means not only on the day of the match,

  373. you got to be ready,

  374. but there's preparation all the way up to that time

  375. where you're sacrificing.

  376. You're trying to stay in shape,

  377. do what you need to.

  378. There is humility.

  379. Again, humility,

  380. talking about some intense personal space.

  381. You know, you're wrestling,

  382. you're all on top of each other,

  383. you're sweaty.

  384. That was one thing that used to really gross me out.

  385. My dad would be over me

  386. and then his sweat is dropping on me

  387. and I'm like, oh, oh, oh.

  388. You know, you're vulnerable.

  389. You know, you're really close.

  390. You know, it can be gross,

  391. but it also, it taught me trust.

  392. You know, in those times,

  393. he wasn't punishing me,

  394. but he was pushing me.

  395. He wanted me to be tough.

  396. He wanted me not to be a quitter.

  397. You know, so many times we have Christians

  398. that are like, oh,

  399. if this is how it's going to be,

  400. being a Christian,

  401. then I'm going to be done.

  402. You know, I don't know,

  403. obviously it was a lie from Satan,

  404. but people who believe that being a Christian

  405. is just going to be all peaches and cream,

  406. oh man, don't believe that.

  407. The Bible says you're going to be persecuted.

  408. You're going to be tried.

  409. The Bible says, you know, Paul writes,

  410. he was knocked down on every side.

  411. He's being attacked.

  412. You know, especially if you're called for some purpose,

  413. you're going to be attacked.

  414. Life isn't going to be fun.

  415. This is where that wrestling comes in.

  416. God doesn't want quitters.

  417. Psalm 51.10 says,

  418. create in me a clean heart, oh God,

  419. and renew a right spirit within me.

  420. You know, sometimes we need that.

  421. With my daughter, Sophia,

  422. I'll wrestle around with her.

  423. You know, I pick her up,

  424. kind of toss her into the couch.

  425. We wrestle.

  426. You know, what that does is it shows her some trust,

  427. you know, but it also gives her some security.

  428. You know, in her little mind,

  429. I'm Superman.

  430. You know, I can defeat everybody.

  431. You know, that's the kind of idea that we need to have with our heavenly father.

  432. You know, we sing it when we're little kids.

  433. My God is so great, so strong, and so mighty.

  434. He can take care of the Esau's in our life.

  435. Number three, this wrestling match.

  436. Let's turn to verse 25.

  437. It says,

  438. And when he saw, that's Jacob,

  439. that he prevailed, or I'm sorry,

  440. verse 24,

  441. And Jacob was left alone,

  442. and there wrestled the man with him

  443. until the breaking of the day.

  444. It says,

  445. And when he saw that he prevailed not against him,

  446. he touched the hollow of his thigh,

  447. and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint,

  448. and he wrestled with him.

  449. Verse 26,

  450. And he said,

  451. Let me go, for the day breaketh.

  452. And he said,

  453. I will not let thee go,

  454. except thou bless me.

  455. The third thing God wants us to see in our trials

  456. is acknowledge our weakness

  457. and acknowledge our need for him.

  458. You know, it doesn't matter how big of arms you got

  459. as a wrestler.

  460. Your source of strength are your legs,

  461. your hips, your back.

  462. You know, God removed Jacob's physical strength

  463. when he touched his thigh.

  464. You know, I think it's interesting.

  465. They're wrestling for a long time,

  466. like all night long.

  467. This is six, eight hours.

  468. You know, it would have been easy enough for God

  469. just to be like,

  470. touch, you know, you're done.

  471. But he didn't.

  472. He wrestles with him.

  473. It says,

  474. Because we know that this angel is God,

  475. and when he saw that he prevailed not against him,

  476. he touched the hollow of his thigh.

  477. Jacob continued to wrestle.

  478. Then it says,

  479. God says,

  480. Let me go, for the day breaketh.

  481. You know, it was kind of like,

  482. Dude, you lost.

  483. Let go.

  484. And Jacob is clinging on to him at this point.

  485. He says,

  486. I am not going to let you go until you bless me.

  487. You know,

  488. Jacob's source of strength physically was that thigh,

  489. but his source of strength spiritually was he's a schemer.

  490. That's how he gets his way.

  491. You know,

  492. the Bible tells us early on that he,

  493. his brother Esau comes in,

  494. and his brother,

  495. kind of being dramatic,

  496. he's like,

  497. I'm going to die.

  498. I'm going to die unless you give me some food.

  499. And Jacob says,

  500. Well, what's it worth to you?

  501. I'll give you some food,

  502. but you give me your birthright.

  503. Esau really thought he was going to die.

  504. Makes that trade.

  505. Later on,

  506. his mother hears that Isaac is going to go against God

  507. and bless Esau instead of Jacob,

  508. which that was wrong,

  509. but they weren't on the same page.

  510. Very dysfunctional family.

  511. So she tells Jacob,

  512. Trust me,

  513. we're going to disguise you as your brother

  514. because your father is blind.

  515. He can't see,

  516. and we're going to have him bless you.

  517. So Jacob puts on,

  518. this is how hairy Esau was.

  519. He puts on the skin of like baby goats.

  520. That's hairy.

  521. So Esau was a hairy guy.

  522. He goes in,

  523. and if you know the account,

  524. Esau,

  525. or Isaac is like,

  526. Well,

  527. you smell like Esau,

  528. and you got hands like Esau,

  529. but you sound like Jacob.

  530. And Jacob says,

  531. Oh,

  532. trust me.

  533. It's me.

  534. He gets the blessing.

  535. He runs out.

  536. You know,

  537. he's with his uncle Laban,

  538. and Laban's like,

  539. Well,

  540. what's going to be fair for me to pay you?

  541. And Jacob says,

  542. Here,

  543. I have all of the kind of the ugly cows

  544. and the ugly sheep in your flock.

  545. You know,

  546. why don't you just give them to me?

  547. I'll take the ugly ones.

  548. You keep the ones that are pure colors,

  549. and I'll take the ugly ones.

  550. No big deal.

  551. And Laban's like,

  552. Oh,

  553. sounds great.

  554. Well,

  555. Jacob knew enough about

  556. how to breed the animals.

  557. He comes up with a plan,

  558. and all of a sudden,

  559. all of the goats

  560. and the cows,

  561. they're all coming out ring-straked

  562. or spotted.

  563. Jacob does really well.

  564. You know,

  565. he's a schemer.

  566. He likes to get things his way.

  567. That was his source of strength.

  568. You know,

  569. for us,

  570. our source of strength

  571. might include intelligence.

  572. You know,

  573. you think about some really intelligent people.

  574. You know,

  575. one of the most intelligent people

  576. that was in our lifetime,

  577. right,

  578. was Stephen Hawking,

  579. right?

  580. People thought he was so smart.

  581. And look where he was,

  582. in a chair,

  583. his body deformed.

  584. I'm not saying that this is the case,

  585. but maybe God was like,

  586. okay,

  587. I have to take away some

  588. strength from you.

  589. Maybe you can keep that intellect,

  590. which we know he was wrong

  591. in a lot of things,

  592. because that's not,

  593. goes against Scripture.

  594. You know,

  595. but what about

  596. your physical body?

  597. You know,

  598. there's been people

  599. who that was their,

  600. their center of focus

  601. was their physical body.

  602. God can touch that.

  603. You know,

  604. what about your finances,

  605. your friends or your family?

  606. You know,

  607. God can remove those things

  608. in order for you

  609. to acknowledge your weakness.

  610. acknowledge your need for him.

  611. You know,

  612. on,

  613. some nights when we pray

  614. here at church,

  615. Wednesday night,

  616. you might hear

  617. my daughter Sophia,

  618. you know,

  619. it's hard to get a two-year-old

  620. to be still and quiet

  621. for a little while.

  622. And one night we were drawn

  623. and,

  624. you know,

  625. I put my hand over her hand

  626. on the pen

  627. and I wrote out

  628. S-O-P-H-I-A.

  629. I said,

  630. Sophia,

  631. that's your name.

  632. She smiled,

  633. my name.

  634. And so I said,

  635. let's do it again.

  636. S-O-P-H-I-A.

  637. She looks at me,

  638. my name.

  639. And then she does this,

  640. which you've probably heard,

  641. she says these two words,

  642. me do.

  643. Me do.

  644. Me do.

  645. So then she just scribbles

  646. and she looks at me,

  647. my name.

  648. It wasn't her name.

  649. You know,

  650. it's cute

  651. when a two-year-old does that,

  652. but what about an adult?

  653. God says,

  654. hey,

  655. you know,

  656. I want to have you

  657. give your tithe

  658. and give to missions.

  659. Me do.

  660. Me work hard

  661. for me money.

  662. Me only give

  663. what me want to give.

  664. You know,

  665. it's funny,

  666. but it happens.

  667. What about a relationship?

  668. A young guy

  669. is like,

  670. me,

  671. man.

  672. Me want to marry woman.

  673. Me no care.

  674. She no come church.

  675. Me get married anyway.

  676. Well,

  677. guess what happens?

  678. You're going to get

  679. what you get.

  680. You know,

  681. the Bible tells us

  682. if you would just

  683. allow God,

  684. just like I did

  685. with Sophia's hand,

  686. let God write that out.

  687. You know,

  688. I'm not trying

  689. to brag here,

  690. but when I left

  691. Bible college,

  692. there was 10 years

  693. of me trying

  694. to allow God,

  695. hey,

  696. bring somebody

  697. and guess what?

  698. It was dry.

  699. Had hardly no prospects

  700. and I just said,

  701. God,

  702. please.

  703. And you know

  704. what ended up

  705. happening?

  706. A-M-A-N-D-A,

  707. Amanda.

  708. You know,

  709. he brought her

  710. into my life.

  711. I can't say

  712. that I always

  713. did that

  714. because there used

  715. to be a time

  716. in my life

  717. where I was a schemer.

  718. You know,

  719. my family can tell you,

  720. we talk,

  721. you know,

  722. she that we don't

  723. speak of,

  724. but there was a girl,

  725. Debbie,

  726. and I tried

  727. to make things

  728. work out.

  729. I tried to play

  730. the puppet maker.

  731. I tried to be

  732. that heel grabber.

  733. You know what I found out?

  734. It doesn't work.

  735. It's so much easier

  736. to let God

  737. control things.

  738. 2 Corinthians 12,

  739. 9-10 says,

  740. And he said unto me,

  741. My grace is sufficient

  742. for thee,

  743. for my strength

  744. is made perfect

  745. in weakness.

  746. Most gladly,

  747. therefore,

  748. will I rather glory

  749. in my affirmities

  750. than by,

  751. or that the power

  752. of Christ

  753. may rest upon me.

  754. Therefore,

  755. I take pleasure

  756. in infirmities

  757. and reproaches

  758. and necessities

  759. and persecutions

  760. and distresses

  761. for Christ's sake.

  762. For when I am weak,

  763. then am I strong.

  764. You know,

  765. that sounds backwards,

  766. but Jacob was at the right

  767. point in his life now.

  768. He's being broken down,

  769. and we're going to see here

  770. in verse 26,

  771. another reason that God

  772. gives us these wrestling matches

  773. is to grow us in prayer.

  774. Look at verse 26.

  775. He says,

  776. Let me go,

  777. for the day breaketh.

  778. And he said,

  779. I will not let thee go,

  780. except thou bless me.

  781. You know,

  782. we turn back here

  783. in our text,

  784. and let's look at

  785. verse 9.

  786. Chapter 32,

  787. verse 9,

  788. it says,

  789. And Jacob said,

  790. O God of my father Abraham

  791. and God of my father Isaac,

  792. the Lord which sets unto me,

  793. return unto thy country

  794. and turn thy kindred,

  795. and I will deal well with thee.

  796. I am not worthy

  797. of the least

  798. of all the mercies

  799. and of all the truth

  800. which thou hast showed

  801. unto thy servant.

  802. For with my staff

  803. I passed over this Jordan,

  804. and now I am become

  805. two bands.

  806. Deliver me,

  807. I pray thee,

  808. from the hand of my brother,

  809. from the hand of Esau,

  810. for I fear him,

  811. lest he will come

  812. and smite me

  813. and the mother

  814. with the children.

  815. And thou saidst,

  816. I will surely do thee good

  817. and make thy seed

  818. as the sand of the sea

  819. which cannot be numbered

  820. for multitude.

  821. You realize

  822. that is the first account

  823. of Jacob praying

  824. in Scripture?

  825. And what a prayer.

  826. He's like,

  827. hey,

  828. I'm at the end of my rope,

  829. I'm terrified,

  830. I'm weak,

  831. but you promised,

  832. you promised this to me.

  833. You know,

  834. I think it's,

  835. God wants us to be bold

  836. and the promises

  837. in Scripture

  838. that pertain to us,

  839. pray them to God.

  840. God,

  841. you said you would

  842. never leave me,

  843. you said you would

  844. never forsake me.

  845. You know,

  846. a lot of times

  847. it's a matter

  848. of our perspective.

  849. Grow us in prayer.

  850. Hosea chapter 12

    Hosea 12:3

  851. verses 3 and 4,

  852. it says,

  853. this is talking

  854. about Jacob now,

  855. it says,

  856. he took his brother

  857. by the heel

  858. and the womb

  859. and by his strength

  860. he had power with God.

  861. Yea,

  862. he had power

  863. over the angel

  864. and prevailed.

  865. He wept

  866. and made supplication

  867. unto him.

  868. He found him in Bethel

  869. and there he spake with us.

  870. You know,

  871. I was thinking about that.

  872. How,

  873. how did Jacob prevail?

  874. Because he lost.

  875. You know,

  876. he prevailed

  877. because he wanted

  878. that blessing.

  879. You know,

  880. the one thing

  881. his entire life

  882. we see in Scripture

  883. is he wanted the blessing.

  884. He wanted the blessing

  885. when it came to Esau.

  886. He wants this blessing now.

  887. But he was always

  888. lacking something.

  889. And that was prayer.

  890. This is the first time

  891. in Scripture

  892. he's prayed.

  893. You know,

  894. he lacked the blessing

  895. when there was

  896. that wife switch.

  897. You know,

  898. how often do we just pray

  899. at mealtimes

  900. and before bed

  901. and then we wait

  902. before we're in

  903. a wrestling match,

  904. before we really

  905. try to seek God?

  906. You know,

  907. I'm guilty of it.

  908. It happens.

  909. You know,

  910. sometimes God

  911. has to get our attention.

  912. You know,

  913. just like with my dad

  914. wrestling with me.

  915. It's because he wanted me

  916. to be something.

  917. He didn't want me

  918. to be weak.

  919. You know,

  920. he wanted me to stand up

  921. for something.

  922. That's what God wants for us.

  923. He has a plan

  924. for all of us.

  925. How do you know?

  926. Because you're still breathing.

  927. God has a plan for you.

  928. Number 27 here.

  929. Verse 27,

  930. it says,

  931. this is God.

  932. And he said unto him,

  933. what is thy name?

  934. And he said,

  935. Jacob.

  936. Another thing that God

  937. wants to do in our trials,

  938. wants us to confess our sin.

  939. You know,

  940. God wasn't looking

  941. for information.

  942. It's not like God

  943. didn't know Jacob's name.

  944. He knew that.

  945. God does that.

  946. He's not looking for information,

  947. but realization.

  948. Remember earlier?

  949. On in Genesis,

  950. he asked Adam,

  951. where are you?

  952. Why?

  953. Because Adam had sinned.

  954. He's covering himself in shame.

  955. God didn't know

  956. where he was geographically.

  957. He knew,

  958. but he's saying,

  959. Adam,

  960. where are you?

  961. You know,

  962. later on,

  963. it says that Cain

  964. kills his brother.

  965. So God says,

  966. Cain,

  967. where's your brother?

  968. God knew.

  969. God is trying to get

  970. Cain,

  971. Adam,

  972. Jacob,

  973. us,

  974. where are you?

  975. Where are you?

  976. You know,

  977. confess your sins.

  978. He wants us to acknowledge

  979. our sin,

  980. confess it.

  981. You know,

  982. Jacob here,

  983. when he says,

  984. my name is Jacob,

  985. he's admitting,

  986. I'm a heel grabber.

  987. That's what he's admitting.

  988. You know,

  989. I'm the guy that bargained

  990. for his brother's birthright.

  991. I'm the guy that is the deceiver

  992. of my father's blessing.

  993. I'm the man that's the schemer

  994. for my uncle's flocks.

  995. That's me.

  996. I'm Jacob,

  997. the heel grabber.

  998. That's what that is.

  999. He's acknowledging who he is,

  1000. his sin,

  1001. he's confessing it.

  1002. You know,

1003. what is our heart's response

  1004. in trials?

  1005. You know,

1006. do we run to God?

  1007. Do we run away?

  1008. You know,

  1009. so many times people,

1010. they run to the things

  1011. that give them comfort

  1012. in this world,

  1013. whether it be idols

  1014. or sin.

  1015. You know,

  1016. addiction.

  1017. Addiction is proof

  1018. that you are capable

  1019. of strong devotion,

  1020. but it's to a false God.

  1021. You know,

1022. so many times people are like,

  1023. oh,

  1024. I don't believe,

  1025. you know,

1026. I don't have any faith in God.

  1027. Well,

1028. you have faith in something.

1029. And if it's the bottle you turn to,

  1030. then that's your God.

  1031. You know,

1032. if it's whatever the screen says

  1033. on the,

  1034. you know,

1035. how the Tao is doing,

  1036. that's your God.

  1037. You know,

  1038. whatever you're focused on

  1039. that doesn't put itself

  1040. beneath God,

  1041. that's your little g God.

  1042. You know,

1043. we tend to think so many times

  1044. our greatest enemy

  1045. is the Esau,

  1046. but Jacob's greatest enemy,

  1047. just like with us,

1048. usually is our own hearts.

  1049. 1 John 1.9 says,

1050. if we confess our sins,

  1051. he is faithful,

  1052. I'm sorry,

  1053. if,

  1054. 1 John 1.8,

  1055. it says,

1056. if we say that we have no sin,

  1057. we deceive ourselves

1058. and the truth is not in us.

1059. If we confess our sins,

1060. he is faithful and just

1061. to forgive us our sins

  1062. and to cleanse us

  1063. from all unrighteousness.

  1064. You know,

  1065. that's what's taking place here.

1066. Not only is this a physical

  1067. wrestling match,

  1068. but there's a spiritual

  1069. wrestling match.

  1070. Verse 28,

  1071. we see God say,

1072. thy name shall be called

  1073. no more Jacob,

  1074. but Israel.

  1075. For as a prince

1076. hast thou power with God

  1077. and with men

  1078. and hath prevailed.

  1079. So a name change,

  1080. especially in this culture,

  1081. is significant

  1082. because it means

1083. either one of two things.

  1084. First off,

  1085. ownership

1086. or a change in character

1087. or a change in destiny.

  1088. You know,

1089. if he would have kept going

  1090. as the schemer,

1091. he just would have kept going.

  1092. But then there's

  1093. a trajectory change.

  1094. You know,

1095. he gets binged over here

  1096. and now he's going

  1097. the right way.

  1098. Sometimes we need

  1099. in our own lives

  1100. a little trajectory change,

  1101. a little nudge,

  1102. a little wrestling match

  1103. to get us

  1104. to what we're doing.

  1105. You know,

  1106. I think it's interesting.

1107. I think the best translation

  1108. that I've found

  1109. for Israel

  1110. is God rules.

  1111. You know,

  1112. now he's not

  1113. the schemer anymore.

  1114. He's a God-driven man,

  1115. a God-ruled man.

  1116. You know,

  1117. how did Jacob prevail?

  1118. He found success

  1119. and was delivered

  1120. from Esau

  1121. by prayer and weakness.

  1122. You'll see later on

  1123. that Jacob's messengers

  1124. come to him

  1125. and they say,

  1126. hey,

  1127. we found Esau.

  1128. He's got 400 guys with him.

1129. And then you read further on

1130. that Jacob comes to him.

1131. He has all these presents

  1132. because immediately,

  1133. you'll see after this

  1134. chapter 33,

  1135. immediately,

  1136. he falls back

  1137. into being a schemer

1138. just like we would do.

1139. And he gets to Esau

  1140. and the Bible says

  1141. that Esau sees him.

  1142. He runs to him.

  1143. The Bible says

1144. he falls on his neck

  1145. and kisses him.

  1146. Do you remember

  1147. an account like that

  1148. in Scripture?

  1149. The prodigal son

  1150. when the father sees

  1151. and runs to him.

  1152. You know,

  1153. I personally believe

  1154. that this wrestling match

  1155. was the determining factor.

  1156. Is Esau here

  1157. to kill you

  1158. and wipe you out

  1159. with the 400 men?

1160. Or will you submit to me

1161. and everything will be good

  1162. for Esau?

  1163. I can't tell you that

  1164. definitively.

  1165. That's what I believe.

  1166. This wrestling match

  1167. was a pouring out

  1168. of Jacob

  1169. and a replacement

  1170. of Israel.

  1171. Romans 5,

    Romans 5:3

  1172. verses 3 and 4 say,

  1173. And not only so,

  1174. but we glory

  1175. in tribulations also,

  1176. knowing that tribulation

  1177. worketh patience

  1178. and patience experience

  1179. and experience hope.

  1180. You know,

  1181. it's very interesting.

  1182. You know,

  1183. you go through this.

1184. When you gain that experience,

1185. things don't seem as bad.

1186. Just a couple weeks ago,

1187. I was asking my Sunday school class,

  1188. I asked them a hard question,

  1189. and they all agreed

  1190. it was hard,

  1191. and I said,

  1192. Well,

  1193. why was it hard?

  1194. And of course,

1195. they just stare at me.

  1196. I'm like,

  1197. It was hard

  1198. because you didn't know

  1199. the answer.

1200. If you know the answer,

  1201. it's easy.

  1202. Well,

1203. if you go through a trial

1204. and you already have experience

  1205. of that trial,

  1206. it makes it easier.

  1207. You know,

1208. the first time we had a kid,

  1209. it's like,

  1210. Oh,

  1211. man,

1212. what am I supposed to do?

1213. And you have a second one,

  1214. and you're like,

  1215. Oh,

  1216. yeah,

1217. I've already done this before.

  1218. I know.

  1219. And then I'm sure

  1220. the more you have,

  1221. you're just like,

  1222. Oh,

  1223. yeah,

  1224. this is easy.

  1225. I could change a diaper

  1226. with my eyes closed.

  1227. You know,

1228. but you get that experience.

1229. That's what God wants to do.

  1230. Change our character.

1231. He wants to give us patience,

  1232. experience,

  1233. hope,

  1234. you know,

1235. get our eyes off of the Esau

  1236. and onto God.

  1237. Verse 29,

1238. you got to really hurry up.

  1239. And Jacob asked him

  1240. and said,

  1241. Tell me,

  1242. I pray thee,

  1243. thy name.

  1244. And he said,

1245. Wherefore is it that thou dost ask

  1246. after my name?

1247. And he blessed him there.

  1248. You know,

  1249. to understand God better

  1250. is another reason

1251. God puts us through these trials.

  1252. You know,

1253. God meets us where we are

1254. so we can see different perspectives

  1255. of him.

  1256. You know,

  1257. God met Abraham,

1258. who was a pilgrim from Ur,

  1259. living in Canaan.

1260. God met him as a pilgrim.

  1261. God appeared to Joshua,

1262. who was the general of Israel's army.

1263. He met Joshua as a soldier.

1264. So now he's meeting the heel grabber

  1265. as a wrestler.

  1266. You know,

1267. God had told and shown Jacob

  1268. that he was protected.

1269. We read some of those verses earlier.

  1270. F.B.

  1271. Meyer said once

1272. that God whispers to us

  1273. in our pleasures,

  1274. but shouts at us

  1275. in our trials.

  1276. You know,

  1277. God cannot bless someone

1278. who has not surrendered to him.

  1279. Verse 29,

  1280. it says,

  1281. And Jacob asked him

  1282. and said,

  1283. Tell me,

  1284. I pray thee.

  1285. You know,

  1286. we just read that.

1287. I'm going to skip that.

  1288. God uses our trials

  1289. to minister to others.

  1290. 2 Corinthians 1,

    2 Corinthians 1:3

  1291. verse 3 and 5,

  1292. it says,

  1293. Blessed be God,

  1294. even the Father

1295. of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  1296. the Father of mercies,

1297. and the God of all comfort,

  1298. who comforted us

  1299. in all tribulation,

1300. that we may be able

  1301. to comfort them

1302. which are in any trouble

  1303. by the comfort

  1304. wherewith we ourselves

  1305. are comforted of God.

  1306. For as the sufferings

1307. of Christ abound in us,

  1308. so our consolation

  1309. also aboundeth by Christ.

  1310. Christ,

  1311. sometimes God simply

1312. puts us in a trial

  1313. because he knows

  1314. someone down the line

1315. is going to go through

  1316. that same trial,

  1317. and you're the person

  1318. that's supposed to help

  1319. them get through it.

  1320. You know,

  1321. I think about Joseph.

  1322. You know,

1323. we read about his trial.

  1324. You know,

1325. he didn't do anything wrong.

  1326. He simply decided

1327. he was going to stand up

  1328. for what was right,

1329. and he gets lied about,

  1330. thrown into prison.

  1331. You know,

  1332. Daniel,

  1333. he just simply did

  1334. what was right.

1335. He gets thrown into prison.

  1336. But you know what?

  1337. Through that trial,

1338. God had other people in mind.

  1339. Sometimes it's just

  1340. simply not about you.

  1341. And it's hard.

  1342. It's hard.

  1343. You know,

1344. you're going through the trial

  1345. and you think,

  1346. oh, this is personal.

1347. Did I do something wrong?

1348. It may not even be about you.

  1349. It's for someone else's benefit.

  1350. You know,

  1351. Joseph,

  1352. he ended up being,

1353. spending his time in prison,

  1354. and guess what?

  1355. He comes out

1356. the number two on the land.

  1357. He essentially saved

  1358. the entire known world

  1359. at that time

  1360. from starvation,

  1361. including his family.

1362. I think on the other side,

  1363. we'd be like,

1364. I'm willing to go through that again

1365. if it can save so many other people,

  1366. especially my family.

  1367. You know,

  1368. Daniel,

1369. he goes through all that,

1370. and the king ends up

  1371. turning to the Lord.

  1372. James 1.12 says,

1373. God has plans for our life.

  1374. It's for our good

  1375. and for his glory.

1376. It may be hard to see in the midst,

1377. but it will be worth it all.

  1378. You know,

  1379. God knows your struggles,

1380. and he's dealt with them too.

  1381. Let's turn to Hebrews 4.15.

  1382. Going a little over,

1383. but we're so close to being finished.

  1384. Hebrews 4.

  1385. Verse 15.

1386. For we have not in high priests

  1387. which cannot be touched

1388. with the feeling of our infirmities,

1389. but was in all points tempted

  1390. like as we are,

  1391. yet without sin.

1392. Let us therefore come boldly

1393. onto the throne of grace

1394. that we may obtain mercy

1395. and find grace to help

  1396. in time of need.

  1397. You know,

1398. God's been through it too.

1399. God's had the same struggles.

  1400. Hebrews 7.25.

  1401. Wherefore,

  1402. he is able also

  1403. to save them

  1404. to the uttermost

1405. that come unto God by him,

  1406. seeing he ever liveth

1407. to make intercession for them.

  1408. You know,

1409. God will make a way for us

1410. to come out of our trial

  1411. and to him.

  1412. You know,

1413. he wants us to fulfill

  1414. Isaiah 40.31.

1415. But they that wait upon the Lord

  1416. shall renew their strength.

  1417. They shall mount up

  1418. with wings as eagles.

  1419. They shall run

  1420. and not be weary,

  1421. and they shall walk

  1422. and not faint.

  1423. And lastly,

  1424. in our text,

  1425. verses 30 and 32,

  1426. we see two memorials.

  1427. First off,

  1428. he says,

1429. he sets up this memorial

  1430. for Peniel,

  1431. you know,

  1432. the face of God.

  1433. If you read there,

  1434. it actually says,

  1435. you know,

1436. I have seen God face to face

1437. and my life is preserved.

  1438. Basically,

  1439. he said,

  1440. I saw God

1441. and I'm living to tell about it.

  1442. I survived.

  1443. You know,

1444. that was the first memorial

  1445. he put.

  1446. That way other people

  1447. can see it

1448. and see what that stands for.

  1449. You know,

  1450. we need mile markers

  1451. in our own life,

  1452. spiritually.

  1453. Look what God did.

  1454. Secondly,

1455. he halted on his thigh.

1456. I kind of did a little research.

  1457. Verse 32 gives us

  1458. a little information

1459. about the hollow of his thigh

1460. and the sinew that shrank.

  1461. Medically,

  1462. that was probably

  1463. his sciatic nerve,

  1464. gone.

1465. The Bible says he halted,

1466. which means he cannot walk

  1467. on that side

1468. the rest of his life.

  1469. You know,

1470. the rest of his life,

  1471. he's walking.

1472. He can't move his leg.

  1473. You know,

  1474. I guarantee you,

  1475. he used opportunities

  1476. to tell his wives,

  1477. his children,

  1478. people he met,

  1479. you know,

  1480. I was a schemer,

  1481. I was a deceiver,

  1482. but God did this

  1483. and now I'm a walking example

1484. of what God has done

  1485. in my own life.

  1486. You know,

  1487. Israel passed down

1488. this lesson to his children.

1489. We see in verse 32

  1490. that that's the reason

  1491. they didn't eat this.

  1492. There's some Orthodox Jews

1493. that still don't eat this.

  1494. It's been gone,

  1495. passed down,

  1496. passed down,

  1497. passed down.

  1498. You know,

  1499. he wasn't perfect

1500. as the next chapter informs us,

1501. but he shared his takeaways

  1502. from the wrestling match.

  1503. Our edifying one another

  1504. can be hard,

  1505. it can be discouraging,

  1506. it can be shameful,

  1507. but they are stories

  1508. of God's goodness

  1509. and grace.

  1510. James 5.16 tells us,

  1511. confess your faults

  1512. one to another

1513. and pray for one another

1514. that you may be healed.

  1515. The effectual,

  1516. fervent prayer

  1517. of a righteous man

  1518. availeth much.

  1519. Psalm 107.2,

1520. the beginning of that verse

  1521. says,

  1522. let the redeemed

1523. of the Lord say so.

  1524. You know,

  1525. Jacob isn't a perfect man,

1526. but right after his victory,

  1527. he falls back

  1528. to his heel-grabbing ways.

1529. As I kind of studied,

  1530. Galatians 5.17

  1531. kind of sums up,

  1532. I think,

  1533. Jacob's life.

1534. And if we're not careful,

  1535. I think it can

  1536. be our life verse.

  1537. It says,

  1538. for the flesh lusteth

  1539. against the spirit

  1540. and the spirit

  1541. against the flesh,

  1542. and these are contrary

1543. the one to the other,

1544. so that ye cannot do

1545. the things that ye would.

  1546. You know,

1547. we don't have time now

  1548. because I've gone over.

  1549. But Romans chapter 7,

    Romans 7 chapter mention

  1550. Paul writes about

  1551. the same thing.

  1552. He says,

  1553. hey,

  1554. the good things

  1555. I know I'm supposed to do,

  1556. don't do them.

  1557. The bad things

1558. I'm not supposed to do,

  1559. I do do them.

  1560. I wish I could figure out

  1561. how to get under

  1562. and figure that out.

  1563. And he tells us

  1564. at the end,

  1565. verse 25,

  1566. that it's because

  1567. he's not focused

  1568. on the inward man,

1569. but he's focused on God,

  1570. Jesus Christ,

  1571. outward.

1572. And that's what we get

  1573. from these trials,

  1574. these wrestling matches.

1575. So let's bow our head

1576. in a word of prayer

1577. and then we'll be dismissed.

  1578. Dear Holy Father,

  1579. I thank you,

  1580. Lord,

1581. for this day you've given us.

  1582. Lord,

  1583. I just ask that

  1584. we would have

  1585. gleaned something

1586. from what you have for us.

  1587. Lord,

  1588. I pray that

1589. in the midst of our trials,

  1590. we would just

  1591. turn to you.

  1592. Lord,

  1593. I just ask God

1594. that you would be with

  1595. the Sunday school hour

  1596. and just continue

  1597. to just grow us

  1598. in you.

  1599. I thank you

  1600. and I love you

  1601. in Jesus' name.

  1602. Amen.

  1603. Great challenge

  1604. and thought here

  1605. this morning.

1606. I want you to take a moment

  1607. to bow your heads

  1608. here for a moment

  1609. and just contemplate

  1610. you and your relationship

  1611. before God.

  1612. You know,

  1613. maybe you're wrestling

  1614. with some things

  1615. here today

1616. that you need to let go of

  1617. and let God

  1618. to do those things

  1619. that God would have.

  1620. As piano plays,

  1621. what about you

  1622. today?

  1623. Maybe you just need

  1624. to take a moment

  1625. to surrender those things

  1626. to the Lord.
