  1. A series here out of John 15.

  2. You know, it's a little different to be sitting in the pew for a few weeks.

  3. ! But you know, it's one of those things that God gives you time to thank and to process with some things.

  4. You know, because really the question is, is that oftentimes people begin to think they are what they do.

  5. But you know what? We are not what we do.

  6. We are who we are in Christ.

  7. Because when we understand that difference, because you know, oftentimes today you find that people have problems of dealing with life

  8. because they don't know the reason for life.

  9. What's attached to it? You know, what's your purpose?

  10. You know, people are seeking much in life of purpose and direction.

  11. They're trying to find things to answer the questions of life, of who they are.

  12. You know, why are you here?

  13. You know, these are not questions that just require a generic answer.

  14. They're questions that need to be truly thought through and considered of where and what it means.

  15. And what God has given to us because they drive the very substance of your life.

  16. Now I want you, I understand that, you know, I've never asked myself those questions.

  17. You might not have used those words, but you've asked yourself those questions.

  18. Might be in a little different form or thought process, but it's that idea of who am I and why am I here that makes a difference.

  19. You know, every decision we make each day is guided by the answer that is settled in our mind on those questions.

  20. We're driven by those things.

  21. It becomes a lens through which we see life.

  22. A lens in which things are brought in what we think is clarity to us.

  23. You know, when we find answers, this world gives a lot of answers.

  24. The problem is a lot of their answers might bring what people think is joy and fulfillment, but in the end is emptiness.

  25. They miss the very reality of who and why they were created in the first place.

  26. Because a wrong answer here will ultimately lead to frustration and despair.

  27. You know, when you realize the importance of what Christ has done for us, but also the importance of who he is.

  28. And this morning we're going to start into a series talking about the vine.

  29. And we're going to look at who the vine is because we can find many things to occupy our time and our energy.

  30. When we understand at the end of life we're left with the same doubts and the same questions.

  31. We lay hold of something useful, something genuinely beneficial, only to discover that it will not do anything that is needed.

  32. You know, I was thinking about that, you know, because a lot of times, especially for guys, you get a tool that guys like.

  33. You know, they'll find their favorite tool.

  34. You know?

  35. And the problem is, is that they get attached to a tool and then suddenly they try to use it for everything.

  36. You know, an adjustable wrench, a monkey wrench is a great tool.

  37. But you know, when you try to use it on a round object, it's very useless.

  38. That's usually when it turns into a hammer.

  39. But you know what?

  40. The harder you try to make it fit, all it does is make life more frustrating.

  41. You know, I want you to understand as we begin looking at this, because the same is true for you and me.

  42. Because we can look for things that give us a temporary answer, but under the weight of life it slips.

  43. It does not meet what's needed.

  44. The weight of life, the frustration and the failure, the objects of life, the sorrow, the guilt, the death, the ideas of eternity.

  45. See, we struggle to get a grip on it.

  46. And that's the reason Jesus here in John 15 is giving some encouragement and some direction to his disciples to say,

  47. Guys, this is where you need to focus.

  48. This is what's going to answer those questions.

  49. This is what's going to give life purpose and meaning and direction, even in the midst of the trials and the struggles and the things that you don't understand.

  50. Because I want you to see here this morning as we get ready to get into John 15,

  51. Jesus didn't just give them a pat answer.

  52. He didn't just give them an answer to a question.

  53. He gave them a who that we need to abide in.

  54. Because Jesus is the one the Father planted and tends and that we need to be attached to.

  55. They've been given an answer.

  56. They only need stay connected to it.

  57. As we look here this morning, I want you to think on this thought.

  58. That where a branch stays, a branch bears.

  59. Where a branch stays, a branch bears.

  60. That's going to be a thought process for us as we walk through the next few weeks, Lord willing.

  61. And I want you to think and contemplate on that because John 15 is at a very difficult moment in time.

  62. You know, sometimes we read John 13 and John 14, you know.

  63. Oh, God's prepared for me.

  64. He's coming again.

  65. He's prepared a place for me.

  66. That's great news.

  67. I mean, that's exciting.

  68. I'm glad.

  69. But then John 15 kind of makes a transition.

  70. Because he gets their attention.

  71. You know, the supper is over and Judas has gone out.

  72. And Jesus says at the end of chapter 14, arise, let us go hence.

  73. So in other words, Jesus has the 11 and he's walking and they're going to the garden.

  74. And we all know what's going to happen in the garden.

  75. Judas is going to bring the men and they're going to arrest Jesus and they're going to take him and crucify him.

  76. You know, Jesus knew exactly what was going to happen.

  77. He knew exactly the struggle these men were going to face.

  78. Because everything they had invested in was going to get turned upside down in their mind.

  79. You know, sometimes when we get caught up and get our eyes off the right object, on the right person,

  80. life gets upside down and doesn't make sense.

  81. Have you ever thought about how the 11 disciples' life went upside down?

  82. They had invested three and a half years of their life.

  83. You are the one.

  84. They were confident that Jesus was the one that they were looking for.

  85. That had been prophesied, that they had been told from a youth,

  86. this is the one.

  87. And he's soon to go to a cross and die.

  88. Their world went upside down.

  89. As we look at John 15, I want you to pay attention closely.

  90. Because what Jesus is doing is preparing his disciples for when life goes upside down.

  91. You know what he's doing?

  92. He's also recording for us what we need to do when life goes upside down.

  93. When life goes what seems out of control to us, that God is still there.

  94. He needs to keep our eyes focused on the right one.

  95. Because I want you to understand that as he's walking towards the Mount of Olives,

  96. he points to the vine.

  97. He's not lecturing them.

  98. He's giving them what they need to be steady as they watch what's going to unfold.

  99. To understand the picture of that.

  100. So if you found John 15 this morning, let's go ahead and stand for a moment here

  101. in honor of the reading of the Word of God.

  102. And I want you to look here and think here this morning.

  103. Notice here in verse 1 of John 15, it says this,

  104. Let's pray.

  105. Heavenly Fathers, we come before you this morning.

  106. Lord, we just thank you for who you are.

  107. Lord, that no matter what, we can hold to you.

  108. Lord, matter of fact, it's our responsibility to hold to you.

  109. Lord, to grab a hold of you even though you have us.

  110. Lord, at the moment of salvation, we are in you.

  111. But Lord, oftentimes, we ignore the reality of the power that is within you.

  112. That you give to us.

  113. That you channel to us.

  114. That you guide us and you direct us.

  115. Lord, I pray that you save your hand upon each one here this morning.

  116. Lord, you know each heart.

  117. You know each life.

  118. You know the struggles, the trials.

  119. But Lord, help us to understand the importance of abiding in you.

  120. The true vine.

  121. And the vine that is pruned and cleaned by the husband and the father.

  122. And Lord, we just love you and thank you in Jesus' name.

  123. Amen.

  124. May be seated.

  125. You know, as we see here, Jesus reminds them that no matter what, they need to stay connected

  126. to the vine.

  127. Connection to the vine is important.

  128. You know, the vine allows the husband to prune and to clean our lives that we might be fruitful.

  129. Because Jesus here is not telling them, hey, just stay connected.

  130. You'll grab a hold for life.

  131. He says, no, when you grab a hold, when you understand that in the vine is where you're fruitful.

  132. And we're going to look in a few weeks because Jesus here isn't just talking about winning souls.

  133. He's talking also about Galatians 5 where you have the fruit of the spirit in your life.

  134. If the fruit of the spirit is missing, you know what?

  135. There's a connection problem.

  136. There's a problem with connection.

  137. And we're going to look here this morning.

  138. Notice first here, Jesus tells them the true vine and the husband.

  139. He gives this picture that they understand.

  140. A clear picture.

  141. Because there's only one way.

  142. As he looks here, notice what he says.

  143. Because I am the true vine.

  144. The vine is a person, not a program.

  145. You know, he tells them, I am the great I am.

  146. Jesus has claimed and declared himself to be equal with God.

  147. To be God.

  148. He says, I am the vine and the father is the husbandman.

  149. Now, I want you to understand what's taking place here.

  150. Because we need to clarify something.

  151. Because who's he speaking to here?

  152. Context in the scripture is important.

  153. Because you can never abide in the vine of Jesus Christ

  154. if there's never been a moment in your life

  155. when you understood you're a sinner

  156. and called upon him to be a savior.

  157. That his saving power is effectual in your life.

  158. The Bible says that you're placed in Christ.

  159. You are in Christ at the moment of salvation.

  160. You're from one family and born again into another family.

  161. There's a distinction of where you're placed.

  162. And there's only one way and that's through Jesus Christ.

  163. But we need to stay connected to the vine.

  164. Now, I want you to understand, he's not talking to his disciples

  165. about losing their place with him.

  166. He's talking here directly.

  167. This whole passage has to do with fruitfulness.

  168. It has to do with dealing with life.

  169. Because we have one of two ways to go through life.

  170. You can go through life miserable.

  171. You know, we walk around in a world, there's a lot of miserable people.

  172. Discouraged, despaired.

  173. And when life happens, we need to abide in the vine.

  174. Hang on to him.

  175. You know, it's not in who you are, but it's who you're in.

  176. Because he is the one that matters.

  177. To have life fulfilled, we must be in the vine.

  178. But notice what Jesus says.

  179. He makes a statement, a very bold statement.

  180. He says, I am the true vine.

  181. The vine is a person, not a program.

  182. It's the great I am.

  183. I want you to understand that Jesus is not just something that you participate in.

  184. Jesus is the vine.

  185. He is the one, the giver of life.

  186. The Bible says that in him you have eternal life.

  187. You're here because he gave life.

  188. Life is essential to understand.

  189. And Jesus tells and declares unto them this reality.

  190. He says, I am the true vine.

  191. I am the one.

  192. You know, John 8, he says this.

  193. Verily, verily, I say unto you, before Abraham was, I am.

  194. This before this in John 14, he says, I am the way, the truth, and the life.

  195. And no man cometh unto the Father but by me.

  196. And now he says, I am the true vine.

  197. I want you to know and understand something because if you're not in the vine of Jesus Christ,

  198. you might be planted someplace else.

  199. Because the reality is, is people will put themselves someplace.

  200. They'll be attached to a wrong vine.

  201. If there's a true vine, you know what it tells me?

  202. There's a false vine.

  203. The world offers a lot of things to get attached to.

  204. That hold our attention, hold our focus.

  205. Grab a hold of us.

  206. When we see these things, that this branch is important because it is from the vine that our life brings forth.

  207. It's a life.

  208. It's a standing.

  209. It's a vine is what brings forth sap and it's fruitful.

  210. But you know what?

  211. When you trim a vine and that branch is trimmed off, you know what?

  212. It cannot produce fruit.

  213. Now, I want you to understand this morning that what he's talking about here, he's talking to his disciples.

  214. He's not telling them.

  215. We'll talk about this in a few weeks.

  216. But I want you to understand that when he's talking about cutting off from the vine, it isn't about losing your relationship with him, but losing your fruitfulness with him.

  217. Because I believe there's a lot of Christians who aren't very fruitful.

  218. The fruit that God wants to produce in your life is absent.

  219. That fruit is what brings us through.

  220. You know, 1 Corinthians 1 verse 30 says this.

    1 Corinthians 1:30

  221. It says, but of him are ye in Christ Jesus, of whom God has made unto us wisdom and righteousness and sanctification and redemption.

  222. You know, those are the things that we require because Christ is not one help amongst many.

  223. He is the life of the branch.

  224. You know, people look today for a lot of answers.

  225. You know, it's amazing how many people look all sorts of places for answers.

  226. You know, it used to be you go down to the self-help section of the bookstore.

  227. Nowadays, people turn to YouTube and podcasts and, you know, some guru that specializes in something gives you a good speech.

  228. And people guide their life from it and they miss the very thing.

  229. This is not going to be.

  230. It's a false branch.

  231. Because I want to tell you something.

  232. You know, a branch can look fruitful or look full.

  233. It can be full of leaves and have no fruit.

  234. A branch can look good and be empty.

  235. What it looks like on the outside doesn't mean what it's producing.

  236. Because when we understand that Jesus is contrasting this, because when Jesus says, I am the true vine,

  237. I want you to understand in the disciples' mind, they already had a vine imagery in their mind.

  238. You know, the Old Testament tells us this.

  239. Jeremiah chapter 2 talks about Israel this way.

    Jeremiah 2 chapter mention

  240. He says,

  241. Yet have I planted thee a noble vine, holy or right seed?

  242. How then art thou turned into a degenerate plant of a strange vine unto me?

  243. You know, Israel was a picture of a vine in the Old Testament.

  244. And they needed to be in what God wanted them to be.

  245. And you know, Psalm 80 tells us this.

  246. Thou hast brought a vine out of Egypt.

  247. Thou hast cast out the heathen and planted it.

  248. Thou preparest room before it and discaused it to take deep root.

  249. And it filled the land.

  250. And down in verse 12 it says,

  251. Why hast thou broken down her hedges?

  252. That all they that pass by the way do pluck her.

  253. Verse 14 goes,

  254. Return, we beseech thee, O God of hosts.

  255. Look down from heaven and behold and visit this vine.

  256. And the vineyard which thy right hand hath planted.

  257. And the branch that thou made is strong for thyself.

  258. It is burned with fire.

  259. It is cut down.

  260. They perish at the rebuke of thy countenance.

  261. So I want you to understand what Jesus is giving to them is a fulfillment and a picture of even the Old Testament prophecy here.

  262. This isn't new information.

  263. It's fulfilled information.

  264. Because Jesus says,

  265. The vine, the true vine, is not the ritual.

  266. It's not the process.

  267. It's the faith in being in him.

  268. He is the vine.

  269. Always has been.

  270. And he's the one that we need to stick close to.

  271. Because Christ is the true vine who doesn't fail.

  272. But I want you to notice something here.

  273. Because this is a lot of times where people struggle.

  274. This is the point of struggle.

  275. Because when you get saved, it says,

  276. I'm easy to hang on to Jesus.

  277. But notice the next phrase in that verse 1.

  278. It says,

  279. And my father is the husbandman.

  280. Now you might have read that many times.

  281. I've spent the last five, six weeks thinking on this.

  282. You know what?

  283. The husbandman is really the problem we have.

  284. I know you're getting a strange look.

  285. The husbandman is the rub because the husband is the one that guides and directs the care of the vine.

  286. You know what the husbandman's job is?

  287. Is to do what's needed through the vine and the branches to make the plant fruitful.

  288. We like Jesus.

  289. We just don't like the husbandman.

  290. And Jesus is telling his disciples, he says,

  291. Hey, the father is going to prune you.

  292. He's going to clean you up to make you fruitful.

  293. You know what the problem is?

  294. We like Jesus.

  295. We like redemption.

  296. But the cleanup process is rough.

  297. The cleanup process is what makes us uncomfortable.

  298. Because you know what the problem is with that?

  299. We have to be obedient and willing to be pruned.

  300. Because take a look here at verse 2.

  301. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit, he taketh away.

  302. Wow.

  303. Think about it for a moment.

  304. Look over to Luke chapter 13.

    Luke 13 chapter mention

  305. Luke chapter 13.

    Luke 13 chapter mention

  306. Look down in verse 7.

  307. Jesus is giving a parable here.

  308. Notice what he says.

  309. Then said he unto the dresser of the vineyard.

  310. Who's the dresser of the vineyard?

  311. The husbandman.

  312. Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit of this fig tree.

  313. And find none.

  314. Cut it down.

  315. Thy cumberth it to the ground.

  316. And he answered and said unto him,

  317. Lord, let it alone this year also.

  318. Till I shall dig about it and dung it.

  319. And if it bear fruit well, and if not,

  320. then after that thou shalt cut it down.

  321. You know what?

  322. The problem wasn't the fluffy leaves.

  323. The problem was there was no fruit.

  324. You know, when you plant something,

  325. I don't care how leafy it gets.

  326. You know, we attempt at planting some tomatoes every year.

  327. But you know what?

  328. You never get excited about a bunch of leaves on a tomato plant.

  329. It can be as fluffy.

  330. I mean, we got some this year.

  331. I mean, it's probably standing this tall out of the bed.

  332. It's all well and good.

  333. But you know what?

  334. If it didn't produce tomatoes, it's what?

  335. Worthless.

  336. You know, this summer we had some dry spells.

  337. You know, you try to get out there and water it,

  338. but it's kind of tough sometimes.

  339. But you know what?

  340. The plant still produced fruit.

  341. You know what it did?

  342. It got rid of the leaves.

  343. You saw the leaves wilt to produce the fruit.

  344. Sometimes our problem is,

  345. is we're so hanging on to the leafies,

  346. what everybody else thinks,

  347. to think, Lord, I can't be pruned of this

  348. because of what somebody else thinks.

  349. And God says you need to let go of your pride

  350. and the sin that holds you

  351. that you might be made clean

  352. and you might be fruitful.

  353. You think about the cause of fruitfulness

  354. or fruitlessness.

  355. So the cause of fruitlessness

  356. isn't the lack of leaves.

  357. I think we have a lot of people in church

  358. that have a good job of looking fluffy.

  359. Know the right religious language.

  360. They know the right things to say.

  361. They know the right things to make everybody happy.

  362. The problem is they're a bunch of leaves

  363. with no fruit

  364. because their lives are miserable because of sin.

  365. The Bible tells us that there are sins that beset us,

  366. grab a hold of us,

  367. that cause us to be unfruitful.

  368. I want you to understand when it comes to sin,

  369. but there's another direct area,

  370. and that's rebellion.

  371. You know, we're all going to struggle with sin,

  372. but rebellion, rebellion's another level.

  373. You say, preacher, how's that another level?

  374. Rebellious attitudes of sin.

  375. Yes, it is, but it's a different level

  376. because it says, I know what I'm doing

  377. and I'm choosing to do it anyways.

  378. Sin magnified.

  379. Rebellion takes form in many ways.

  380. Rebellion can take place with disobedience.

  381. I think there's a lot of people

  382. not willing to submit to the truth of God's word

  383. because of their pride of what they think,

  384. of how they have processed life to say,

  385. I'm not willing to put myself

  386. under the authority of the word of God

  387. to do what I ought to do.

  388. They don't do that

  389. because it makes me feel uncomfortable.

  390. This life isn't about how comfortable

  391. and bushy we can look.

  392. Because at the end of life,

  393. fluff gets you no place.

  394. He wants us to be fruitful.

  395. You know, let me throw one more up there.

  396. How about complacency?

  397. We live in a generation of comfort.

  398. We measure everything about

  399. how comfortable am I going to be doing it.

  400. It makes me uncomfortable.

  401. I'm not going to do it.

  402. But when you prune a plant,

  403. I guarantee you the process

  404. doesn't always look good.

  405. You know what?

  406. Ultimately, it produces the fruit

  407. that it's designed to produce.

  408. Notice what it tells us here

  409. as we go on in this passage here.

  410. It tells us it's very clearly

  411. this reality

  412. of understanding what's happening

  413. because God takes away those things.

  414. Notice what he tells us here

  415. in the passage.

  416. It says,

  417. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit,

  418. he taketh away.

  419. Now, taketh away,

  420. I want you to understand,

  421. is concerning your usefulness

  422. and the Father's chastening

  423. his correction of his own.

  424. It's not means that God's going to

  425. lose your salvation

  426. or kick you out.

  427. It's God's doing what's needed

  428. to help you to be fruitful.

  429. You go through this.

  430. There's people who use this passage

  431. and say,

  432. See, you can lose your salvation.

  433. That's not what it's talking about.

  434. Context is important.

  435. I believe that this passage

  436. teaches you can lose salvation.

  437. That means that apostles

  438. could lose their salvation.

  439. And everybody that I know

  440. would think that's nuts.

  441. As you're secure in him,

  442. what he's talking about here

  443. is fruitfulness.

  444. To abide in him.

  445. Holding on to him

  446. because notice what he tells us here.

  447. Look at the second part of verse 2.

  448. It says,

  449. In every branch that beareth fruit,

  450. he purges it

  451. that it may bring forth more fruit.

  452. Boy, that's against us, isn't it?

  453. Because sometimes we'll be saying,

  454. Lord, look what's happening

  455. and how you're using me

  456. and what we're doing.

  457. And God says,

  458. Hold on.

  459. You need to shave some more things

  460. out of the way

  461. that you can produce more.

  462. A lot of times in life

  463. when God is blessing

  464. and things are happening,

  465. we say,

  466. Well, God, why did you allow that?

  467. Jesus is answering that question.

  468. He says that you might bring forth

  469. more fruit.

  470. Fruit in your life

  471. might be something of substance.

  472. It says he purges it.

  473. That word purges

  474. means pruning,

  475. cutting away growth

  476. that's alive

  477. but unproductive

  478. so the vine

  479. concentrates on new growth.

  480. understand that God doesn't prune you

  481. out of his anger.

  482. He prunes you because he cares.

  483. Prunes you because he has something greater for you.

  484. Comfortable thought.

  485. Because we live in a generation

  486. that thinks that God is,

  487. he's always going to do what I think is good.

  488. Have their eyes on the fluff

  489. instead of the fruit.

  490. fruit.

  491. God allows things into our lives

  492. that we might become more fruitful.

  493. Some of it's enjoyable.

  494. Some of it is painful.

  495. It makes you uncomfortable.

  496. not in his anger

  497. that he does these things.

  498. We don't have time this morning

  499. but you can write down

  500. Hebrews chapter 12

    Hebrews 12:5–11

  501. verses 5 through 11

  502. talks about

  503. his pruning of us,

  504. his chastening of us.

  505. God's chastening,

  506. his correction,

  507. his pruning is important

  508. because it does something for us.

  509. Look at Psalm 119.

  510. Psalm 119 in verse 67

  511. says this.

  512. It says,

  513. Before I was afflicted,

  514. I went astray

  515. but now have I kept

  516. thy word.

  517. A few verses down

  518. in verse 71

  519. tells us this.

  520. It is good for me

  521. that I had been afflicted

  522. that I might learn

  523. thy statutes.

  524. I'll ask you a question.

  525. Can you truly say that this morning?

  526. The psalmist is saying here

  527. is something very simple.

  528. Thank you for pruning my life.

  529. Understand those things.

  530. Think about Job.

  531. Job 23 verse 10

    Job 23:10

  532. says,

  533. He says,

  534. But he knoweth the way

  535. that I take

  536. and when he hath tried me

  537. I shall come forth

  538. as gold.

  539. Like those verses,

  540. the problem is

  541. we struggle

  542. with the husbandman

  543. that produces those

  544. things in our life.

  545. By pruning us,

  546. by cleaning us up,

  547. by doing what needs

  548. to be done in our life

  549. to make us fruitful.

  550. Because be fruitfulness

  551. means being allowing

  552. the husbandman

  553. to guide and direct

  554. what takes place

  555. in our life.

  556. You know,

  557. think about the word

  558. does the cleansing.

  559. Look at verse 3.

  560. Now you are clean

  561. through the word

  562. which I have spoken

  563. unto you.

  564. In other words,

  565. that word clean here

  566. is the same one

  567. used earlier

  568. to prune

  569. or to purge.

  570. You're purged

  571. by the word of God.

  572. You're pruned

  573. by the word of God.

  574. You're clean

  575. by the word of God.

  576. Jesus is the living word.

  577. It tells us in John

  578. in the beginning

  579. was the word

  580. and the word

  581. was with God

  582. and the word

  583. was God.

  584. John 1.14 says

  585. the word was made flesh

  586. and dwelt among us

  587. and we beheld

  588. his glory

  589. and the glory

  590. of the only begotten

  591. of the Father

  592. full of grace

  593. and truth.

  594. The problem

  595. we often have

  596. is we don't like

  597. the cleaning process.

  598. The cleaning process

  599. and the pruning process

  600. isn't very enjoyable.

  601. I had

  602. an accident

  603. on a bike.

  604. You know

  605. when you're young

  606. you do foolish things.

  607. I was over in Japan

  608. and we were all

  609. trying to keep

  610. ourselves busy

  611. so me and some other guys

  612. bought some mountain bikes

  613. and we went out

  614. mountain biking.

  615. And so one of the guys

  616. was pretty good

  617. and he jumps over

  618. this

  619. wide trench.

  620. You know

  621. we're scooting down

  622. this steep hill

  623. and you get enough speed

  624. and you jump the bike

  625. and you go over the trench.

  626. Well

  627. I'm like

  628. I can do that.

  629. Sarah went in the trench.

  630. We're Marines

  631. we don't wear helmets

  632. we don't do that

  633. I mean we're men

  634. we bike like men.

  635. The side of my face

  636. scraped up.

  637. April remembers

  638. getting pictures of this.

  639. It's one of the reasons

  640. of many

  641. that she tells me

  642. not to grow a beard

  643. because she says

  644. it'll look spatchy.

  645. I did

  646. down where we went

  647. there was coral rock.

  648. It's alive.

  649. I have a coral in my face.

  650. Sponges they use

  651. at the doctor's office

  652. with little plastic bristles.

  653. I got the privilege

  654. of getting my face scrubbed

  655. one of those bristles

  656. until they got

  657. all the coral out.

  658. The story is this

  659. it was not comfortable

  660. the cleansing

  661. was beneficial

  662. because if the cleansing

  663. didn't happen

  664. the coral would stay alive

  665. and begin growing

  666. within you.

  667. the same reality

  668. is for us

  669. when it comes

  670. to our life

  671. Jesus is the vine

  672. and God is the husband

  673. that cleanses us

  674. through the word of God

  675. and sometimes

  676. that cleansing

  677. is painful

  678. sometimes

  679. it's very difficult

  680. to deal with

  681. needed

  682. that we might be fruitful

  683. to get rid of those things

  684. that hinder us.

  685. you know

  686. Jesus

  687. just a little later

  688. here

  689. tells him this

  690. sanctify them

  691. through thy truth

  692. thy word

  693. is truth

  694. Psalm 119

  695. says

  696. wherewithal

  697. shall a young man

  698. cleanse his ways

  699. by taking heed

  700. thereunto

  701. according to thy word

  702. with my whole heart

  703. have I sought thee

  704. let me not wander

  705. from thy commandments

  706. thy word

  707. have I hid in my heart

  708. that I might not

  709. sin against thee

  710. James tells us

  711. wherefore lay apart

  712. all filthiness

  713. and superfluity

  714. of naughtiness

  715. and receive with meekness

  716. the engrafted word

  717. which is able

  718. to save our souls

  719. need

  720. to abide

  721. in the true vine

  722. but allow the husbandman

  723. to prune

  724. and to clean our lives

  725. be fruitful

  726. need fluffy

  727. leafy

  728. Christians

  729. that are comfortable

  730. God wants

  731. fruitful

  732. Christians

  733. talk about that here

  734. in the weeks to come

  735. because as we understand

  736. first being the vine

  737. and then the branch

  738. understand there's today

  739. there's many

  740. who are false

  741. fluffy branches

  742. see a lot of people

  743. who follow after

  744. false fluffy branches

  745. they think there's fruit

  746. so they follow

  747. when the vine

  748. is the devil

  749. that's attached to

  750. attached to the vine

  751. and we have done

  752. that happens

  753. when we're in Christ

  754. at salvation

  755. because this morning

  756. there's three branches

  757. in this room

  758. everybody falls

  759. under this category

  760. first the branch

  761. that was never

  762. in the true vine

  763. a false branch

  764. you're still

  765. in a vine

  766. because every man

  767. I want you to understand

  768. is attached to something

  769. Jesus gives

  770. another example

  771. of this

  772. of what

  773. is going on

  774. he says

  775. you have your father

  776. the devil

  777. you know

  778. God talks about

  779. in Deuteronomy

  780. he says

  781. their vine

  782. is the vine

  783. of Sodom

  784. you can be

  785. in a false vine

  786. vine can grow

  787. and look fluffy

  788. and have leaves

  789. for a lifetime

  790. but never once

  791. bore fruit

  792. that God

  793. would want to see

  794. and there's only

  795. one way

  796. to change that

  797. and that

  798. to come

  799. to the true vine

  800. that is to trust

  801. Jesus Christ

  802. as your savior

  803. when he says

  804. for whosoever

  805. shall call upon

  806. the name of the Lord

  807. shall be saved

  808. because you need

  809. to move

  810. from a vine

  811. that's false

  812. and leads astray

  813. and leads to hell

  814. to a vine

  815. that gives life

  816. and fruitfulness

  817. a vine

  818. that gives purpose

  819. and direction

  820. security

  821. different

  822. you know

  823. second

  824. we find

  825. that

  826. I think

  827. there's branches

  828. with leaves

  829. with no fruit

  830. there's a fruitless

  831. branch

  832. you know

  833. this morning

  834. there's going

  835. to be those

  836. that are attached

  837. themselves

  838. to a false branch

  839. there's going

  840. to be those

  841. who have attached

  842. themselves

  843. to the vine

  844. at salvation

  845. but they're fruitless

  846. because they're

  847. holding on

  848. to things

  849. that cause

  850. a stumbling block

  851. in their life

  852. and God says

  853. it needs to be dealt

  854. with to move

  855. forward

  856. to be fruitful

  857. you know

  858. if your spiritual

  859. life is stuck

  860. you need to start

  861. asking why

  862. you're rebelling

  863. against the one

  864. who wants to prune

  865. and clean you

  866. that you might

  867. be more fruitful

  868. that might mean

  869. giving something up

  870. it might just be

  871. a matter of obedience

  872. to know what

  873. I ought to do

  874. to do it

  875. you know

  876. James tells us

  877. he hath knoweth

  878. to do good

  879. and doeth it not

  880. to him

  881. it is

  882. sin

  883. it's direct

  884. disobedience

  885. tells us

  886. he that covereth

  887. his sin

  888. shall not prosper

  889. for whosoever

  890. confesses

  891. and forsaketh

  892. them

  893. shall have mercy

  894. you know

  895. this morning

  896. I hope

  897. you don't leave

  898. this building

  899. without it settled

  900. to put away

  901. those things

  902. to let the same

  903. word that convicted

  904. you

  905. of what God

  906. wants to do

  907. in your life

  908. to that the word

  909. has put through you

  910. that the word

  911. might cleanse you

  912. that you might

  913. come to him

  914. and call upon him

  915. but there's a third

  916. branch here

  917. this morning

  918. that's

  919. it's bearing

  920. and being

  921. cut

  922. it's being

  923. pruned

  924. a pruned

  925. branch

  926. have you ever

  927. wondered why

  928. the pruners

  929. have been

  930. in your life

  931. remember

  932. pruning is not

  933. in God's

  934. anger

  935. towards you

  936. but because

  937. of his care

  938. for me

  939. that I

  940. had been

  941. afflicted

  942. that I

  943. might learn

  944. thy statutes

  945. faith

  946. comes

  947. and is

  948. active

  949. when things

  950. are trying

  951. have a hold

  952. of

  953. you know

  954. we need

  955. to stop

  956. resisting

  957. the hand

  958. that's making

  959. you fruitful

  960. and yield

  961. your life

  962. to him

  963. if you

  964. contemplate

  965. on this

  966. I want

  967. to take

  968. a moment

  969. here

  970. you know

  971. I want

  972. you to stop

  973. and think

  974. about yourself

  975. preacher don't

  976. tell you that

  977. much

  978. think about

  979. yourself

  980. but there

  981. are times

  982. we need

  983. to think

  984. about

  985. ourselves

  986. what kind

  987. of branch

  988. are you

  989. if there's

  990. a need

  991. that God

  992. is speaking

  993. to you

  994. I encourage

  995. you to get

  996. that taken

  997. care of

  998. this morning

  999. as heads

  1000. are bowed

  1001. and eyes

  1002. are closed

  1003. today

  1004. I want

  1005. you to think

  1006. here just

  1007. for a moment

  1008. what kind

  1009. of branch

  1010. are you

  1011. don't settle

  1012. just for the

  1013. foliage

  1014. if God

  1015. has spoken

  1016. to you

  1017. won't you

  1018. come

  1019. as the

  1020. piano

  1021. plays

  1022. and just

  1023. call out

  1024. to him

  1025. whether that's

  1026. a need

  1027. of trusting

  1028. him for

  1029. salvation

  1030. confession

  1031. confessing

  1032. something

  1033. that says

  1034. Lord I

  1035. need to

  1036. let go

  1037. of my

  1038. pride

  1039. and say

  1040. Lord I

  1041. need to

  1042. take that

  1043. step

  1044. of obedience

  1045. that step

  1046. of faith

  1047. and yield

  1048. to him

  1049. you don't

  1050. walk out

  1051. the same

  1052. way you

  1053. came in

  1054. because you

  1055. can be

  1056. connected

  1057. to the

  1058. vine

  1059. you can

  1060. allow him

  1061. to begin

  1062. pruning

  1063. your life

  1064. Thank you.
