Called to Community: A Serving Community

And let's begin our worship with a word of prayer.

Dear God, thank you for this morning, thank you for everybody that's gathered here this morning, thank you for your son and what he did for us and giving us the ultimate example of love and sacrifice and community, and thank you for this group that's gathered where we can just learn more about you and love and show this world what it means to love and be a community.

And it's in your son's name we pray.

Amen.

Lord, you are more costly than gold.

Lord, you are more beautiful than diamonds and nothing I desire compares with you.

Lord, you are more precious than silver.

Lord, you are more costly than gold.

Amen, how I love the great Redeemer who is doing so much for me.

With what joy I tell the story of the love that makes men free.

The scripture reading today comes from 1 Peter, chapter 4, verses 10 through 11.

1 Peter 4:10–11

It says Each of you should use whatever gifts you have received to serve others as faithful stewards of God's grace in those various forms.

If anyone speaks, they should do it as one who speaks the very words of God.

If anyone speaks, they should do it as one who speaks the very words of God.

If anyone serves, they should do it so with the strength that God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ.

To him be the glory and the power forever and ever.

Amen.

Bow with me, please for a word of prayer.

Father, we thank you so much for your love, for your grace and for your mercy.

We thank you, god, for the beautiful day you've given us, for our walk, for water.

We pray, God, that you bless it with great success and that with our little efforts today, that somewhere around the world there will be a whole group of people that not only will get clean drinking water but will receive the living water of your Son.

Help us open our hearts to your Word as we look at how to be a better serving community.

In Jesus' name, all God's people said Amen, all right.

Yogi Berra how many of you heard of Yogi Berra Played baseball, but he's probably more famous for his yogisms than he is being a baseball player.

In fact, according to the Yogi Berra Museum and somebody's car is parked right where at Glare Okay, I did it, I confess, right there, but, man, they stand right.

Thank you, stand right there.

Framers got it, but I can't see because it was so bright.

Where was I at?

I'm not getting close to you, but Yogi, in fact it says.

The Yogi Berra Museum says that Yogi Berra is quoted more in America than William Shakespeare, which doesn't surprise me because I don't know of a lot of Americans that quote William Shakespeare, but we do quote Yogi Berra a lot, for example.

Here's some Yogi-isms when you come to a fork in the road, take it, remember.

And he told one of his friends, joe Garagiola, how to get to his house.

And he said when you come to a fork in the road, take it.

What's interesting is where that fork in the road was.

It just went in a circle and so if you took either fork, you got to his house.

But so he did tell him that.

He told Stan Musial one time about his favorite restaurant in St Louis and he said it's my favorite restaurant.

I'll take you.

Nobody goes there anymore because it's too crowded.

That's a yogi-ism, he told.

When he was a manager of the New York Mets, he told everybody let's pair up in threes.

Now, if he was Noah of the New York Mets, he told everybody let's pair up in threes.

If he was Noah, it would have been a mess, wouldn't it?

But he told them pair up in threes.

This is probably one of his most famous ones.

When he was coaching or managing the New York Mets, they were nine and a half games back behind the Cubs and they asked him about it and he said it ain't over till it's over.

And then there's this one where he was on a team where I believe it was Mickey Mantle I can't remember who the other person was Mickey Mantle and somebody else.

They hit back-to-back home runs and they asked him about it and he said it was like deja vu all over again.

That's yogisms.

They were just great Deja vu all over again.

Now, what does deja vu mean for you French-speaking people?

It's already seen it's like deja vu means I experienced something that I thought I experienced before.

This happened to me and it's just like it happened yesterday.

It was deja vu, and so he said it was like deja vu all over again.

The apostle Peter wrote the letter that we call 1 Peter to a group of Christians who were scattered because of their faith, and he's encouraging them to remain faithful even though they're being persecuted.

And in the first three chapters, after, he reminds them how they're saved by grace and he talks about Jesus being the living hope.

And he says all of those things he spends chapter 4, 5, and 6, and and part of chapter 3 in talking to these Christians about here's how you are to act even though you're being persecuted.

He says I know you're going through tough times, I know you're being mistreated, I know life is rough.

But he says I want you to understand that even though you're going through these tough times, you still are called to be a servant, you're still to call to serve.

And just because you're going through these tough times, you still are called to be a servant, you're still to call to serve.

And just because you're going through tough times doesn't mean that you know.

You can't use that as an excuse to just say I'm done.

And I wonder when he wrote that, when he talked about this passage that we're going to look at in just a few minutes when he wrote that about.

You need to remember you're still to be a servant of God.

If it was a deja vu all over again moment for Peter, because, if you remember, years before he wrote 1 Peter, peter was reminded by Jesus.

You know what.

You blew it and you messed up, but you still have a ministry.

You still need to serve again.

And that happened in John, chapter 21.

Peter and the apostles had seen Jesus a couple of times after the resurrection, but yet they were still confused.

I mean, imagine spending three years following this man every day and he talks about building this kingdom and all of a sudden he's killed, he's crucified, and then he shows up three days later and says, da-da, I'm really alive.

And they just didn't know what to think.

And in chapter 21, there was a lot of deja vu moments when Jesus appears to them again.

While he's appearing to them, peter is fishing.

If you remember, when Jesus first met Peter, what was Peter doing Fishing?

Or when he met Peter, what was Peter doing Fishing?

Or when he called Peter, he was fishing.

He had been fishing all night and he didn't catch anything.

In John, chapter 21.

And we'll see in a minute Jesus told him throw that on the other side.

Well, that had to be a deja vu moment, because in Luke 5, when he called Peter, the same thing had happened.

Peter had been fishing all night and he didn't catch anything.

So you wonder if Peter's sitting there thinking this is deja vu all over again.

And then we see Peter setting around the charcoal fire talking to Jesus when Jesus reminds him Peter, listen, I know it's tough, I know you're confused, I know you messed up, but you still have a job to do.

Feed my sheep.

The last time Peter was sitting around a charcoal fire, just a few days earlier, he was denying Christ, he's cursing and saying I don't know who Jesus is.

He was denying Christ, he's cursing and saying I don't know who Jesus is.

I wonder if it was a deja vu moment all over again, all through those moments that Peter was doing.

And then, years later now, he's writing to a group of Christians and I'm wondering if he wrote you know what.

I know you're going through these tough times, but you need to use the gift God has given you to serve.

If he went back to the time when Jesus told him Peter, I know it's tough, but you are still to serve, you're still to go feed my sheep.

And I think through those moments we learn how to be a more serving community, because we've been talking about the past several weeks being called to community.

That is the church.

We are called to be a loving community, a disciple-making community.

We've looked at several ways that we're called to do that and how to be that, and so today we're going to look at how we can be a more serving community by looking at what Peter said.

And here's the whole point Peter's making Stay focused, even in bad times Notice.

It says here in this passage that Jesus appeared to the disciples again, and Simon, Peter and Thomas and Nathanael and the sons of Zabadi, james and John and a couple other disciples were there.

And Peter finally said you know what?

I don't know what to do, I'm confused, I'm angry, I'm upset, I don't know what to do.

You know what?

I'm just going to go do what I used to do.

I'm going to go fishing.

That's probably good.

When you don't want to do a good thing to do, joe's just go fishing, right.

And so he said I'm just going to go fishing.

And so Peter does that.

He gets up and he goes fishing.

He really didn't know what to do or how to deal with all of that.

And I think you know we need to understand that it says that you know he goes out to fish.

And they said, yeah, we'll go with you too.

They really didn't know what to do too.

They really didn't know what to do.

They really didn't know what to do.

And sometimes when we get confused and we get angry or we are, we get upset, our life gets so crazy and we don't know what to do.

We just sort of go back to what we used to do.

I'll just go back and that's sort of what happened to Peter, and we're going to find out in a minute that Jesus came along and said you need to do some things different.

You know it's so easy that when things get tough, to lose sight of what's really important.

I don't know about you, but when I get stressed out or when life just comes crashing in, it's very easy for me to start focusing inward and I start thinking about what's best for me.

And you know all of this.

And it's not wrong to take a break.

But just because life gets bad and life gets tough, that doesn't give us the right to say I can stop being what Jesus calls me to be, which is a servant, to become a more serving community.

We just need to understand that we've been called to do that.

And so later Peter writes to these Christians here and he says I know you're going through a difficult time.

I know you've been chased away from your home because you're a Christian.

I know some of you are facing death.

I know some of your family's been killed because of their faith, but each of you has received a gift to serve others.

He says You're still called to be a servant.

Tough times doesn't give me the excuse to not have to worry about serving others, and I know that when times get tough, I get more concerned about winning than about witnessing.

I get more concerned about protecting myself than promoting God.

I get more concerned about winning the argument than in winning souls.

I get selfish instead of focusing on service.

And Paul is telling Peter you can't do that, that we need to remember that even in bad times, we're called to serve.

Let me give you an example of what ministry is, because in our 830 class, our service, we had a great discussion about how do you know what your ministry is?

Okay, I'm called to serve.

It's real simple find your passion.

Whatever it is you're passionate about.

It could be disc golf, it could be crocheting, it could be anything.

It could be baking your preacher a pie, I mean.

Find your passion and whatever it is you're good about and you connect your passion to your purpose and your purpose is to.

Your purpose is to.

Your purpose is to After 36 years you still ain't got it.

Your purpose is to glorify the Father.

Glorify the Father.

We are to live and act in such a way that, through our actions, our words and our attitudes, people become conscious of God.

So if I can take my passion, whatever it may be it could be fishing, it could be whatever it is and I say, okay, this thing I love to do, how can I do it in such a way that reminds people and shows people the love of God, that becomes your ministry, that becomes your mission.

I'm not telling you you have to go out and do something.

I'm not saying you need to add more stuff to your schedule.

I am saying this that when I understand my purpose is to glorify the Father, when Stop 9 Dismisses here and we fill up every stinking restaurant in Guernsey County, every one of us ought to go in there, not to be served by the waitress, but to serve the waitress, because that's what disciples of Jesus do.

Jesus said it this way Mark 10, 45,.

He said the Son of man didn't come to be served, he came to serve and to be a ransom for many.

If we're disciples of Jesus, can you imagine how that would change this community and how this would change our assembly on Sunday morning if we all took seriously the fact that I'm a follower of King Jesus and, like King Jesus, I'm going to walk in here not to be served but to serve.

I'm not going to walk in here and sit down and say get out of my pew.

They better sing the songs I like, and Woody better hurry up because I'm getting bored, and it better be blah, blah, blah.

And those kids are too loud and I just can't do blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.

Could you imagine how a church would change if everybody walked in here and said you know what?

I'm not going to walk in here to be served.

I'm going to walk in here to serve.

I.

I'm going to walk in here to serve.

I'm going to walk in here to encourage Nick Rapaski.

I'm going to walk in here and pray with Joyce Lucas.

I'm going to walk in here to hug that little kid.

I'm going to walk in here and serve those foster parents.

I'm going to walk in here and see how I can serve my brother.

It would change this whole congregation.

It's not about you.

This assembly is not about you.

Are you going to be blessed to be here?

I hope so.

Are you going to be encouraged?

Yeah, yeah, but God said I called you to serve.

It's not about you being served.

Now I know we've designed it that way because we've padded the pews for you and we put in air conditioning and we've set up the building where you're supposed to be the spectator and I'm supposed to entertain you and all of that stuff's a great tradition, but not one stinking part of it has anything.

The pews are of the devil.

So I know our culture has designed this assembly for you to think you're coming in here to be the spectator and it better be a good show.

But that's not from.

God designed this assembly for you to think you're coming in here to be the spectator and it better be a good show.

But that's not from God Won't be a moral servant community.

I need to understand that.

I need to stay focused.

Even in bad times, I need to seek to obey God.

Even if In John 21, the disciples had been fishing all night and they were tired and they didn't catch anything, they went to the Woody Bigg School of Fishing, which is basically drowning worms.

All right, that's my fishing experience.

Jesus is on the shore and he says, hey, throw that net out.

On the other side of the boat.

Now Peter's a professional fisherman.

He knows where the fish are and it's like, hey, he's probably thinking this isn't right.

This guy don't know what he's talking about, or he could have been thinking oh, that happened to me once before.

I remember Jesus one time telling me.

Is that Jesus?

I'm not sure what he thought, but I do know this Servants obey God, even if what God tells them to do doesn't make sense.

And so Peter said, okay, let's throw the net on the other side of the boat.

And just like it happened in Luke 5, it happened again.

They got a whole bunch of fish.

They were tired, they'd been up all night, they had been fishing all night, but even though they were tired and even though what Jesus told them didn't make sense, and even though they were ready to go take a nap, they did what Jesus said.

That's what servants do and that's how we become a more servant community.

Because I'm going to let you know, being a servant isn't easy.

It can be difficult, and sometimes God says here's how I want you to serve Love your enemies.

That makes sense.

Go, wash the feet of the Judas in your life.

Do good for evil.

If somebody curses you, bless them.

That's what servants do.

They obey the king.

And when Christians say, a lot of times you talk about this happening or that happening and I really don't see God's power working in my life, it's probably because you're not serving anybody.

It's probably because we're not obeying God when it doesn't make sense.

Because when I obey God when it doesn't make sense, that's when I see God's power working in my life.

Remember, in John chapter 2, when God changed the water into wine.

And when he changed the water into wine, he told the servants to go fill up the jugs again.

And so they went and filled up the jugs.

Can you imagine what they thought when Jesus said hey, boys, go take these wine jugs and go fill them up with water.

And they're probably going down to wherever they're getting the water saying that's the dumbest thing ever way water.

We don't need water to drink, we can't drink the water, it's dirty water, we need wine.

Just who's this guy?

I think he is telling us to go pick up and drink these jugs of water.

Water, this guy's not.

You know, we're gonna drink the water.

And then Jesus put the guy the wine taster pulls out his water in the goes.

This is the best wine I've ever had.

Did the servants see the power of God that went and filled up the jugs with water?

Sure they did.

Would they have seen the power of God if they disobeyed God, even though what he told them to do didn't make sense?

No, they wouldn't have.

You want to see the power of God?

Start loving your enemies.

You want to see the power of God?

Start loving your enemies.

You want to see God move.

Do good for evil Servants.

Obey God, even if it doesn't make sense.

You'll see God's power and glory in your life when you serve more, and sometimes you may not see it until years later.

A couple weeks ago, jeff and I were out here talking and some guy pulled in in a tow truck and he came out and said Woody, how you doing?

I said how are you?

Who are you, willie?

You remember me?

Nope, sorry, I don't.

And he started telling.

He lived in Akron.

He was telling a story and I don't remember him at all and he said you changed my life.

I said I did.

And he told me the story that he was here.

Remember when pomegranate was down here?

And he was there and I don't remember going into that place, maybe once, and he said you were there and I was going through some tough times there and you pulled me aside and you said a couple of words to me and you helped me and you changed my life and today he goes.

Today I'm a chaplain for a motorcycle club in Akron.

I don't remember any of that, but you know what.

I saw the power of God that day.

In a way I served and I don't even remember what I did.

I truly believe, I believe with all my heart that walk for water.

Today, if we have a bucket and you're not able to walk and you throw a bucket in, I believe with all my heart that somebody in heaven is going to walk up to you and say you know what?

You're from that church, you know what.

I remember that walk for water and I'm in heaven because you did that.

I wouldn't do it if I didn't believe that.

I believe everything we do as a ministry is going to reap rewards.

But if I don't serve, I'm never going to see God's power and sometimes you may not see it until Willie pulls up in a tow truck 30 years later.

But we are called to serve God, even if Anyone who serves should serve with the strength God gives.

Even if I'm going to serve God, no matter what, because he'll give me the strength.

God, I don't think I can do that, I'll give you the strength.

Even if you don't think you can do it, just serve God.

Does that make sense?

We will see God's power when we serve in faith.

If I'm not serving, you're not going to see God's power in your life and church is boring.

This is boring if you don't see God's power Just boring.

Oh, there's the passage I was looking for, number three.

If you'd seen this outline, it's all scratched because I just had trouble with it flowing all week.

It's marked out, scratched out everything else.

I need to see the ultimate goal.

If you know what happened in John 21?

After they caught the fish, they're eating.

Peter and Jesus are sitting around.

They have this conversation.

Remember, peter just denied Christ and so, and he denied him three times, right.

And so Jesus says hey, simon, do you truly love me more than these?

Well, yes, lord, you know I love you.

He asked him a second time.

Do you truly love me more than these?

Well, yes, lord, you know I love you.

He asked him a second time do you truly love me more than these.

Yeah, lord, you know I love you.

Then he asked him a third time but do you really love me?

Do you love me unconditionally?

And he said Lord, you know that I love you.

And Jesus three times said take care of my sheep, feed my sheep, feed my sheep, feed my sheep.

I think he did it three times to remind Peter.

I know you denied me three times, but now I'm charging you three times.

Peter's response was very un-Peter-like, because when Peter usually responded it was usually with bravado.

You remember when Jesus was washing the feet, peter said you're not washing my feet.

Jesus said well, peter, if I'm not going to wash your feet, then I have nothing to do with it.

Well, here, just wash my whole body, then Lord.

You know, peter was the one who said even if everybody else leaves you, I got your back, lord.

He said, peter, you're going to deny me three times.

Peter was the one who said, lord, if it's really you, let me get out of the boat and walk on the water.

I mean, peter's always responded with bravado.

He wasn't always right, but he was never in doubt.

This was a very un-Peter-like response.

He was humble.

You love me.

Well, lord, yeah, I love you.

Feed my sheep, feed my sheep, take care of my sheep.

And he tells him three times.

And he said do you love me more than these?

I don't know what these were, I don't know if it was the fish, I don't know if it was the other disciples, I don't know what he was talking about.

But he's saying Peter, do you love me more than anything else in your life?

And then he tells him to feed your sheep.

Now, when I went to vacation Bible school back in the day, you know, and back, we didn't have all these fancy gadgets and iPads to teach class.

We had the high-tech thing called a flannel board.

You remember a flannel board, steeler, you know what a flannel board is.

Smith, you know what a flannel board is.

See, you've not lived until you've been taught Bible class with a flannel board.

So just a piece of flannel and you would stick the little lamb on there.

The lambs were.

We made lambs with cotton balls and glue and they were sweet little things.

You know, I grew up thinking Mary had a little lamb, little lamb, and you would.

I just thought all lambs were sweet and smelled like glue.

But lambs are dirty, dumb animals.

There's nothing dumber than a lamb.

And so Jesus tells Peter if you love me, you need to feed my sheep.

And I want you to understand he's changing Peter's ministry.

He's expanding Peter's ministry because the first thing he told Peter when he first met him was you're no longer going to be a fisherman, but you're going to be a fisher of men.

Peter said I'm let, I know how to fish.

But now Jesus said Peter, you're not going to be just a fisher of men, now you're going to be a feeder of sheep.

Peter's thinking I've never fed a sheep in my life.

It's going to be uncomfortable, I don't know what butchery wants me to do, but Peter went ahead and fed the sheep.

Telling Peter that I'm changing you from a fisherman to a feeder of sheep is like saying, woody, I'm changing you from a preacher to a nuclear physicist.

It just ain't going to happen.

But yet he did and he did and he did.

It told him what to do and he responded that way Feeding sheep's difficult, serving is difficult.

Do you know why serving people are difficult?

Because people are difficult.

It's messy.

Ministry would be a piece of cake if I didn't have to put up with you Feeding sheep.

You get dirty, you start smelling like sheep.

You have to rescue them and wrestle them out of the mud.

You have to fight off wolves.

Taking care of sheep is a difficult job and serving is a difficult job.

But I need to understand that.

When I figure out what the purpose of the serving is, it makes it a little bit easier, because there's nothing more frustrating than trying to serve someone and they reject the service.

They don't respond the way you want them to.

But I want you to understand that.

Peter sort of sets that straight.

He says you need to remember.

If you want to be a serving community, you need to understand what the goal of the serving is.

Anyone who serves should serve with the strength God gives them so that in everything God will be praised through Jesus Christ.

The purpose of serving is not to make you look better.

The purpose of serving, ultimately, is not to make that person's life easier, even though it does.

The purpose of serving is so that God can be praised.

People will look and say you know what?

Woody was the most selfish person in the world and now he's serving people.

God really changed his life.

The purpose of walking around in 87 degree weather this afternoon at Buckeye Trail is not just to sweat.

The purpose is to glorify the Father, and so I need to understand that, remember that purpose every day.

The other day I was at the mall and I just had to go to the bathroom.

Really bad, I'll just be honest with you.

It was tough.

So I'm taking off looking like an Olympic speed runner, you know, looking for the bathroom sign.

Of course, the bathroom sign is clear on the other end of the mall.

So I'm taking off, just going, and I'm just running and it was crazy and as hard as can be.

And I get there and I turn the corner for the men's bathroom and there's a sign there that says out of service, closed for cleaning.

It was ah.

I thought I may have to identify as a woman and go across the hall real quickly here for the next few seconds.

It was tough.

It was tough, guys.

This week we're going to meet people who are struggling with addiction, who are going through divorce, who are hungry, both spiritually and physically, who are loaded with guilt, who are burdened with grief, who are scared, who are sick kids, who are scared, who are sick kids, who are afraid.

We're going to meet all kinds of people in our broken world who are running around looking for help.

We can't be disciples walking around with an out-of-service sign hanging around our neck.

They're there, they need to be served and I make no apology of telling you that the most important thing, the most important thing you will do this week, is serve somebody else.

I'll make no apology by telling you that the most important steps you'll probably take this week would be walk for water.

If you choose to do that, I have no problem telling you that if you throw a buck in the, a ten bucks or a buck in that bucket back there, if you decide you can't walk or don't want to walk, I have no problem telling you that that ten dollars for the price of a value meal, you will save a kid's life.

You'll provide clean drinking water for a life.

I have no problem telling you that serving somebody in the name of God will have eternal ramifications.

We talked at the 830 service about Alice being on her knees scrubbing the men's restroom.

That has eternal ramifications.

People are in heaven because the smallest thing done in the name of God has eternal ramifications.

We walk in here every Sunday and we sit in this pew and we just assume it magically gets cleaned up.

We assume the trash just disappears.

We assume the trash just disappears and it happens because servants take out the trash in the name of God and it makes eternal ramifications.

We just assume the baptistery is clean.

But when an 80-year-old man was baptized on his birthday Thursday Pam what day was that Thursday?

I know it was an hour late because I had the time wrong that just vacuuming that, that takes eternal ramifications.

Hugging a little kid as he comes running through here and letting them know God loves him will make a difference for eternity.

Doing the smallest thing in the name of God in order to praise God will change eternity.

We're called to serve, so your homework this week is real simple Serve somebody.

Send them a card, mow the grass, give them a call, shoot them a text, bake them a pie.

Serve somebody.

What did you say?
