The Holy Spirit: How can I know I have Him

Good morning folks.

We're glad you're here this morning.

Folks, let's continue with our worship.

Father, we thank you so much for your love for us.

We thank you for your mercy and grace.

We thank you for your Holy Spirit and, as we learn more about him today, we thank you, god, that he's with us, he lives within us and he works within us.

In Jesus' name, all God's people said amen.

All right, you know, god's given us five senses to help us sort of understand the physical world where we can know certain things.

For example, we know this past week has been hot right, because we can feel it.

It has been hot because we can just walk out of this building into the 95 degree heat and feel it.

We know chocolate pie is delicious because we can taste it.

Now, if you don't like chocolate pie, you need to repent.

But we know because we can taste it.

We know that skunks stink because you've gone down the road and you ran over a skunk.

Right, I mean, you know it stinks because we can smell it.

And so, all those five senses, we can understand that.

We know this flag is red, white and blue because we can see it.

I mean, when it comes to physical things, god has given us senses to help us understand what's going on.

But there's a spiritual part of your life as well and we're not, especially as Americans.

In the Western culture we are not in tune with the spiritual part.

I mean it's hard for us to see or experience love.

It's just not something you can really touch.

It's hard for us to experience or see forgiveness we talk about it.

It's hard for us to experience or see forgiveness we talk about it.

It's hard for us to experience or see when we talk about the Holy Spirit.

That's hard for us to understand, even as Christians, because we don't understand the spiritual aspect of your life.

You've heard me say before that we live our lives as if we're physical beings and we have spiritual experiences.

Every now and then.

We go to church and sing, have a spiritual experience.

We may go to a funeral and have a spiritual experience, but we live our life as if it's all physical.

In reality it's just the opposite.

You are not a physical being, you are a spiritual being and your time on earth is just a brief physical experience.

But at your core you're a spirit.

You're inside this body, but God has given us, he's made us, spiritual beings, and when my body wears out and I die and I lay down and Trent makes me look good, I'm still going to live.

But we get so in tune of what we can touch and taste and feel and see.

We don't understand the spiritual side of our lives.

And so, when it comes to the Holy Spirit which we talked about last week, that God, if we are a Christian, we're a baptized believer, god gives us this Holy Spirit that lives within us.

Some of us doubt that because we're just so physical we don't understand it, even though the Bible says it.

And then we say, well, what does that mean?

And last week we talked about who the Holy Spirit is, that he's not like may the force be with you.

He's not some force, but he's a person, he has personality, and we talked about that.

The Holy Spirit is God, that he lives within you, and we talked about what he does, that this Holy Spirit that lives in Christians, he guides us, he helps us in our fight with sin, he helps us take through our struggles, and we talked about all those things he does.

But then the question comes okay, you say I have him, woody, and you say that the Holy Spirit does all these things.

But how do I know?

I mean, if you're a Christian, do you know you have the Holy Spirit?

And how do you know?

I mean, how do we know we do it?

Because there's all types of things out there where people say, well, I know I have the Holy Spirit because of this or that, and so I want us to look at how you can leave here today knowing that God lives within you he really does if you're a disciple of his and so we can leave knowing that there's some false evidences out there.

I couldn't think of better terms.

I just came up with false evidences about the Holy Spirit and maybe how we know we have him, and one of them is just feelings.

I have the Holy Spirit because I just feel him.

And feelings are important.

Emotions are important.

God created us with emotions.

Partly, god gave us feelings so we can relate to him and relate to each other.

God gives us feelings to warn us about dangers.

The feeling of anger is a good feeling, because when I get angry it's sort of a warning sign I better watch out.

If I handle it correctly, the feeling of fear is a good thing.

You know, if you weren't afraid of anything, you just run out there in I-77 and start playing.

Feelings can be a good thing.

Feelings can teach us, through feelings, patients can teach us how to handle adversity, even love, even though real love is not a feeling.

It affects our feelings.

But we talk about the feeling of love.

My heart just fluttered when he walked into the room.

You know, I'm just.

I just my heart just fluttered when he walked into the room and even though that, you know, feelings are, affects love.

True feeling is doing the true love is doing things in spite of your feelings.

We understand that, that emotional part of love.

So feelings are important.

Feelings help us enjoy life and I know that there's times where you may have, if you're a Christian.

You say I just felt God move.

You know there's times you're in creation.

I just feel God out there.

You know feelings are important.

I'm thankful for feelings.

I experience God's presence.

I feel God's presence when I hold a newborn baby.

I feel God's presence when I sing hymn of heaven.

I feel God's presence when I sit by the bed of a loved one who's getting ready to die and they talk about heaven waiting for them on the other side.

I see God's presence in creation.

I feel his presence and I'm thinking for it.

But I also understand this, that if I think feelings is the only way that I can experience God or know God is with me, that's not true, because feelings are unreliable.

Feelings are unreliable, right, my feelings are determined by external circumstances.

If the Buckeyes win, I feel happy.

If the Buckeyes lose my day's shot, feelings are unreliable.

If the weather's good, I feel happy.

If the weather's bad and the sun don't shine, I'm oh.

Feelings are unreliable.

And so while feelings are important for me to say, well, I know the Holy Spirit's with me because I feel him that could just be the bad taco you had last night, right.

And so when people say, well, woody, sometimes I just don't feel like I have the Holy Spirit, that doesn't mean you don't have him, because feelings are unreliable.

There are times when I don't feel like God is with me, that doesn't mean God's not with me.

Does that make sense?

So when people say, well, yeah, you should know God's with you by your feelings, well, that's not always true, Because there's times I don't feel forgiven, but God is still forgiving me.

There's times I don't feel God is with me, I'm lonely, but God says I'm with me.

So feelings isn't proof that you have the Holy Spirit.

Then some people say well, you know, you get the Holy Spirit when you have this some spiritual experience and there are some people that talk about that and you have this supernatural physical experience.

And I read where one guy said I know when I got the Holy Spirit because a thousand it was like a thousand volts of electricity just came through me and I'm just up there Now.

Again, I am not denying anybody's spiritual experience.

Okay, I believe God works.

Okay, I believe God works.

There have been things that I've experienced that I know is from God and if I tell you you think I'm stupid.

But you know, there have been some things I've experienced.

I've told many of you this before that when Amy and I first came here 36 years ago and we were asking God hey, god, is this where you want us to go or not?

I need an answer, god.

And we pulled into the Main Street smorgasbord Wasn't that a great place to eat?

It wasn't.

It's a terrible place to eat.

That's why it's not there anymore.

All right, I just felt like it was good food, but I don't know.

And I said God, give us a sign.

And we pulled in and as soon as I asked God to give me a sign a car right in front of us.

We pulled in and there was this bumper sticker yes, buysville's the place.

And I looked at that and said, amy, I just asked God to give us a sign.

I believe that's from God.

Now you think it's just a coincidence.

I don't believe in coincidences.

And I remember going back to the church where I was preaching and they said are you going to Buysville?

I said yes.

They said, oh, did they offer you the job?

I said no, but I saw a bumper sticker and God told me I was going to Buysville.

And guess where I was?

Last week was it last week?

Two weeks ago?

Amy and I were down in Florida.

We were dealing with some stuff with her mom.

We had to deal with some of her property and we didn't know anybody down there.

And we're driving down there and I said God, we need to find a realtor we can trust God, please give us a realtor.

We drove by one house.

There was a lady's name there, a realtor.

I said let's call her.

So I looked her up and see if there were some reviews and I'm not sure.

So I just started checking other realtors in this lady's real estate office and we came across this lady and it said I'm reading her biography, she had some good reviews and she was born in Ohio, she grew up in Puerto Rico, she lived in.

She was born in Pennsylvania, she lived in Puerto Rico for a while, then she lived in Ohio.

She grew up in Puerto Rico, she was born in Pennsylvania, she lived in Puerto Rico for a while, then she lived in Ohio.

And then I was reading a biography and it said she was active in her church.

I said, all right, amy, born in Pennsylvania, you're from Pennsylvania.

She lived in Ohio.

I don't have any connection to Puerto Rico, but she goes to church.

God wants us to call that lady.

I just knew it and we called her and she's phenomenal.

She sold the property before we put the sign in the yard.

Now you can look at me and say, woody, you're an idiot to think that I'm telling you that was a spiritual experience.

And I bet many of you who are Christians can say, yeah, there was a time where this happened and it just so I'm telling you yes, I know that we spiritual experience happened.

I know that we can experience things and we can feel God's presence.

I understand all of that.

But nowhere in Scripture does it say that the way you get the Holy Spirit is you got to have some sort of spiritual experience and that's the Holy Spirit coming on you.

Does that make sense?

We can have spiritual experiences, but the Bible doesn't say the Holy Spirit comes to you through some big spiritual experience where all of a sudden because some of us out there say you know, I just never had a spiritual experience like that, so I don't know, do I have the Holy Spirit?

The answer is yes.

And then the third way some people falsely say you get the Holy Spirit is that you have first, you have to have this superior spirituality.

And these people believe this yeah, you're a Christian, but you're not going to get the Holy Spirit until you become a super Christian and you just got to pray through and you just pray for God to give you the Holy Spirit and you keep working hard and you go and you go, and you go and you go, and when you get mature enough that God's going to, that Holy Spirit's going to come on you and you're just going to know it.

There's a Greek word for that, baloney.

Now the problem with that is this Receiving the Holy Spirit depends upon your effort.

That's against everything Christ teaches.

And so you have all these ways where you decide how do you get the Holy Spirit or not.

So how do we know?

If it's not through feelings, woody, and if it's not through my experiences, and if I don't have to be a superior, how do I know I have the Holy Spirit?

You said last week that the Holy Spirit helps me through my struggles, that he helps me fight sin.

How do I know that?

Because sometimes I don't feel that.

Well, we'll see how we know, how we know that we have the Holy Spirit.

The indwelling of the Spirit is given when we accept the gospel, not after when we accept the gospel, not after.

When we accept the gospel, not after.

I loved going to camp as a kid.

I loved going to camp and my favorite night of camp was skit night, because skit night all the different cabins would come and they would do different skits.

And then there was a time where I was a counselor at camp, and skit night a lot of times is when they would try to do something to make the counselors look silly.

And so one night one of the cabins decided they were going to do a skit night about an American Indian dance, native American dance, and they called me up to dance and they had this little campfire and they said now to do this skit, you need to dance around and you've got to repeat after us O-wa-ta-fu-la-yam, o-wa-ta-fu-la-yam, o-wa-ta-fu, and they go faster.

Wa ta foo lai am.

And I'm dancing around.

Wa ta foo lai am, and before you know, I'm going faster.

Wa ta foo lai am.

Wa ta foo lai am.

Wa ta foo lai am.

Wa ta foo lai am.

Wa ta foo lai am.

And they go ah Well, yeah, we made voodoo out to be a fool, which they could have done a whole lot simpler stuff than that.

Well, that's sort of what Paul says when he writes a letter to the churches in Galatia.

And here's what he says.

He says you fools, you foolish Galatians.

Who has bewitched you?

Before your very eyes, jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified.

I would like to learn just one thing from you Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law or by believing what you heard?

Are you so foolish that, after I'm out of breath, after beginning by means of the Spirit.

You're now trying to finish by means of the flesh.

And here's what all that gobbledygook means.

There's these new Christians in this place called Galatia, and some Christians came and other Christians said you know what?

Yeah, you're saved by grace, but you've got to do some other things to get saved.

You have to keep the Old Testament law.

So if you really want to be sure you're going to heaven, you guys have got to be circumcised.

If you don't know what that means, that's one of the elders.

And you're going to have to keep the Sabbath and you're going to have to do this Old Testament law.

And you've got to start doing this.

And you can't eat this.

And Paul writes and says you fools.

You started out being saved by the Spirit.

You started out being saved by God's grace.

You had the Spirit at the beginning.

When you became a Christian, you had the Spirit.

And now, instead of just walking in the Spirit and let God strengthen you and help you be what you wanted to be, you're now trying to earn your way to heaven by being good enough.

And you can't be.

Does that make sense?

You've heard me say before there's only two ways you can get to heaven Right, be perfect and be forgiven.

You've blown the first one.

The only way I can get to heaven is to accept the fact that Jesus died for my sins and be forgiven.

And then he gives me the Holy Spirit to help me live and become more like Jesus every day.

And so, you know, the indwelling of the Spirit is given to me when I'm baptized into Christ.

That's what Clark read for us.

Peter replied you've got to remember.

In Acts 2, there's all these Jews who had killed Jesus.

And Peter said I want you to know that this Jesus you killed.

God made him king, he's your king.

You killed the creator of the universe, you killed your savior.

And they said what do we need to do?

And he says you need to repent, which means you just need to change the way you think about God.

You need to change the way you think about sin.

You need to change the way you think about your priorities.

You need to stop trying to fix your life your way because you're messing it up.

And you need to be baptized, immersed into Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.

And then he says this then, when you come out of that water, not only are your sins washed away, not by the water, but through your faith in the blood of Jesus, you die like Jesus did to yourself.

You're buried, like Jesus was.

You come out of the grave like Jesus did, and then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

He says then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

He says then you'll receive the Holy Spirit.

Now, the gift of the Holy Spirit.

I'm going to impress you.

Even though I'm not a grammarian, is a grammarian even a word?

Grammaritarian, dramatarian, even.

I don't know an adverb from an adenoid.

There's a thing called appositional genitive.

Aren't you impressed?

And an appositional genitive in grammar is when you use two words to describe the same thing.

For example, you could say I went and visited the city of New York.

The city of New York is an appositional genitive.

I went and visited the city which is New York.

That make sense.

That's called an appositional genitive.

There's no telling what you learn when you come to church here.

I just got to make sure.

I got to make sure I say genitive, right, and nothing else comes out but oppositional genitive.

And then another example would be Fred the mailman, retired this week.

Fred the mailman, Two words to describe the same thing.

All right, you see that in the Scripture a lot.

For example, in Luke 2.41, it talks about the feast of the Passover.

It's the feast, feast of the Passover.

It's the feast which is the Passover.

In Revelation 2, 10, it says be faithful to the point of dying for Jesus, be faithful unto death.

Because he's writing to Christians who are being persecuted and killed because of their faith by the Roman Empire.

And so John says in Revelation 2.10, be faithful unto death and you shall receive the crown of life, the crown which is life.

Does that make sense?

An appositional genitive?

Well, that's what gift of the Holy Spirit is.

You read that and it says when you become a Christian, your sins will be washed away and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

What's the gift of the Holy Spirit?

Is he talking about gifts Like the ability to no.

Is he talking about the Bible?

No, gift of the ability to no.

Is he talking about the Bible?

No Gift of the Holy Spirit.

Is he talking about a new car?

No, the gift of the Holy Spirit is an appositional genitive.

The gift which is the Holy Spirit, that when you come out of that water, there's a lot of things that happen.

Your sins are washed away, you're declared not guilty in front of God.

God looks at you and now sees perfection.

You're added to the church and one of the things is you receive the indwelling of the Holy Spirit as a gift.

So I want you to understand how do I know if I have the Holy Spirit?

Is it a feeling I have?

No, there are times you may feel God move, but it doesn't mean.

Is it some spiritual experience?

No, you may have some spiritual experiences in your life.

Do I have to be some super Christian?

Definitely no.

Here's how you know you have the Holy Spirit, because God says you have the Holy Spirit.

I know by faith.

Well, how do I know he's working in my life Because God says he is?

How do I know that he's taking my prayers when I'm so heartbroken that I don't have the words up to the heaven like God?

Because God says he does.

But, woody, I don't feel like it.

I know you don't At times.

I don't feel like it.

I have the Holy Spirit Because he's given me that.

Promise one is the forgiveness of sins.

I don't even know if that's on your outline, is it?

Promise one is the forgiveness of sins.

Promise two is the gift of the Holy Spirit, which is the Holy Spirit.

Oh, there we go.

All that appositional, genitive stuff.

Here's the point.

If you've been baptized into Christ, you have the Holy Spirit.

Let me ask you this Are you forgiven?

Do you always feel forgiven?

No, there's times when I blow it.

Are you forgiven?

Do you always feel forgiven?

No, there's times when I blow it.

I know you find this hard to believe.

I still sin.

I can see the shock on Becky's face, but the blood of Jesus keeps washing away.

That's what's so great about being a Christian.

The blood of Jesus just keeps washing away my sins.

As I say God, I'm sorry I blew it again he says I forgive you, I'll keep forgiving you.

And even when I don't feel forgiven, I know I'm forgiven.

There's times I feel lonely.

I don't feel like there's times I feel lonely.

I don't feel like God says I'm with you, yeah, but I don't.

I'm with you.

Okay, by faith, I believe you're with me.

There's times where I think, man, I'm afraid to die.

God says don't be afraid to die, I've defeated death.

How do I know?

How do I know I've defeated death Because God said it, when I just hear dear saints who are on their way to heaven and I've told you before.

There's some that I've talked to that have been Christians for years, and one lady in particular.

What did you do?

I hope I've done enough to get to heaven.

And I looked at her and said well, don't worry, you haven't.

And she went oh, what do you mean?

I haven't.

I said you haven't, you can't be good enough to get to heaven.

Every one of us deserve to bust hell wide open, because we were created to be image bearers of God.

And when we sinned, we couldn't be what we were created to be.

And then and we were separated from God.

But then God, because he loves you so much, said you know what I'm going to send Jesus to come and die for you and hang on that cross for you, so that when you are baptized into Christ, you come out of that water.

You are now, your sins are forgiven and you can worship.

Now your sins are forgiven and you can worship.

You can be what God created you to be.

You are now cleaned up.

He not only saved you from hell, he saved you for something, so I could be what I created to be, which is an image bearer of God.

And when I understand that's my purpose, man.

My life changes, but I know that because God said it, not because I feel it all the time.

Sometimes I feel like trash, sometimes I feel like a loser and God says I've given you victory.

Well, why don't I feel like it?

He says just watch, just trust me.

God, I don't feel like the Holy Spirit you got it, he's right there, working, yeah, but just trust me.

Does that make sense?

The indwelling Spirit is given to everyone who trusts in Jesus.

It says there that the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, for all whom the Lord will come.

Who are those who are far off?

I read a.

I saw a TV show this past week about the town of Minto Manitoba.

How many of you have ever been to Minto Manitoba?

Minto Manitoba how many of you ever been to Minto Manitoba?

Minto Manitoba has a population of 85.

There was a guy there.

His name was Lloyd, something I got it written down.

Lloyd lived there until he was 10 years old.

Lloyd Campbell lived there until he was 10 years old.

He went on to become a multi-millionaire real estate investor.

He died and he left this town that had 85 people, 30 kids in school grade through eight.

He left them an inheritance.

The inheritance was he was going to give them this little town $55,000 a year for perpetuity forever.

$55,000 a year for perpetuity, forever.

And he had to use that $55,000 to provide recreational things for the kids.

Wouldn't it be great to live in a little town where you got $55,000 a year just to spend on kids, and it was forever.

He says it's just forever.

And this town they're talking about, we don't know what to do.

We built an ice skating rink and we built this and we'll, we'll, we'll.

What are we going to do with all this money?

We don't know what to do Our kids, blah, blah, blah.

That was a promise that went on forever.

Well, that's what Peter says here in Acts 2.

He says this promise of the Holy Spirit it's for you Jews that are listening to me in Acts 2, and it's for your kids, but it's also for those who are far off.

Oh, there's Mento, there's the guy.

All right, but who are those who are far off?

Well, paul tells us in Ephesians.

He says, therefore remember that formerly, you, who are Gentiles by birth and called uncircumcised by those who call themselves the circumcision, remember that at the time you were separate from Christ.

You Gentiles, we're the Gentiles.

You're either a Jew or a Gentile.

I bet we're Gentiles.

You were separated from Christ.

You were excluded from being a part of God.

In Israel you were foreigners to the promise that God made, without hope, without God.

But now, in Christ, you who are once far away, have been brought near by the blood of Christ.

So back in Acts 2, where Paul says this promise is also for those who are far off.

Who's the far off?

It's you and me.

The promise of the Holy Spirit has been given to us as well, and I know I have Him.

Even though I don't always feel like it and even though I don't always have spiritual experiences, and even though I'm not a super-duper, superior Christian, I know I have Him and he's working in my life by faith, because Jesus says I do so.

Here's your homework, even if you don't feel like you have it.

Every day this week, when you pray, begin by saying God, I just want to thank you for your Holy Spirit Because I know you're there.

Does that make sense?

And the good news is anyone who decides I'm ready to do things God's way.

When I am baptized into Christ, I receive the Holy Spirit and it helps me with my relationships.

He helps me be the man and woman God wants me to be.

He helps me be the dad or the mother God wants me to be.

He helps me become what I was created to be.

The good news is, if you're a Christian, you have the Holy Spirit and you know it by faith.

The good news is, if you're not a Christian, you can have the Holy Spirit.

Thank you, father.

May I call you friend?

I've hurt you, jesus.

I've hurt you with my sin, hurt you with my sin.

Father, please forgive me.

I'm young and can't survive without the peace of mind that only you provide.

May I call you Father?

Let's pray.

Dear Heavenly Father, we just thank you again for another beautiful day that you've given us and as we go off into our week here, I just ask that you help guide us to have the heart of a servant.

And you know, we've got a lot of blessings and a lot of us, and in the summer we're going to be traveling and having, um you know, vacations and lots of fun things with our family and friends.

And I just ask that, um, you help us understand that it is you who gives us those blessings and it can be taken away at um, at any instance.

So, um, just thank you so much for, for the love that you, uh, that you give us, and it's your son's name.

We pray, amen.

Blessed be your name in a land that is plentiful, where streams of abundance flow.
