Blended in Unity (Part 1)

Good morning.

Let's begin our worship with a word of prayer.

God, thank you for this morning and thank you for this portion of your family that we get to gather with and sing songs and worship.

You and Holy Spirit, we just invite you in here this morning.

Just give us an attitude of worship and enhance our worship so that it is pleasing to the Father.

And Father, thank you for your son, jesus, who gave us the ultimate example of love and sacrifice and kindness and goodness, and it's in his name we pray.

Amen, who else commands all the hosts of heaven?

Who else can make every king bow down?

Who else could whisper and darkness tremble forever?

A holy God, come and worship the holy God.

What other beauty?

demands such praises?

What other splendor outshines the sun?

What other majesty rules with justice?

Only a holy God.

Come and behold Him.

The one and the only cry out sing holy, forever a holy God.

Come and worship the holy God.

Who else could rescue me from my failings?

Who else would offer his only Son?

Who else invites me to call him Father?

Like the woman at the well, I was seeking For things that could not satisfy, and then I heard the Savior speaking.

Draw from my well that never shall run dry.

There are millions in this world who are craving the pleasures earthly things afford, but none can match the wondrous treasure that I find in Jesus Christ, my Lord.

So, my brother, if the things this world gave you leave hungers that won't pass away, my blessed Lord will come and save you if you kneel to him and humbly pray.

The scripture reading today comes from Psalm 133.

It says how wonderful and pleasant it is when brothers live together in harmony.

Let's begin with a word of prayer.

Dear God, we thank you for this day.

God, we thank you for an opportunity to get together as a family, to get together as a community.

And, god, we're thankful for an opportunity to praise and worship you this morning.

And God, we're thankful for Jesus, we're thankful for his example of how to love and to interact with people.

And, god, we pray that we can learn from that example.

God, we thank you for loving us.

It's in your son's name we pray.

Alright, I want you to imagine you just pulled into your driveway.

You just had a really long trip and it's that moment where you pulled into the driveway.

But when you left for that trip, the moment you walked out your door, nothing went well.

You spilled your coffee, carrying the suitcase to the car.

You're walking through the airport, the wheel of your suitcase breaks, so now you're lugging that thing around.

You get to the gate and because of the broken suitcase, you missed your flight.

You get sat next to the guy that snores the whole flight.

You're with a group of people In the group.

There's the complain flight.

You're with a group of people In the group.

There's the complainer that it doesn't matter what happens.

They have something to complain about.

In the group you have somebody that just won't stop talking.

You know who that is.

You see them right now because your eyes are closed.

Some of you are looking at me.

You get to the hotel and the hotel that you had booked months ago well, that your friend was supposed to book months ago.

You say the name and they say we don't have a room, so that big, nice hotel that you were supposed to stay at is not available.

Instead, you have to go down the road and stay at a different hotel, and so you're like okay, it's fine, it's going to be okay.

I'm with this group of people, everything's going to be okay.

You think I'm going to go take a swim.

You go down to the pool.

When you reach for the pool gate, it says close for maintenance.

You spend a lot of money on food and it's not any good.

So you pull into the driveway.

The trip is finally over.

Who was on the trip with you?

You can open your eyes.

Think about that.

Who was on the trip with you?

Who was that complainer?

Who was that person that didn't quit talking?

Don't point.

I saw a couple pointings already.

You're in the driveway.

You just got home from a trip.

It was the best trip of your life.

Everything went great.

The group of people that you were with you didn't stop laughing.

It was filled with happiness.

Everything just went right.

It's a trip that you'll never forget.

The communication, the conversations that you had unexplainable Just everything was fantastic.

This morning we're going to begin a series and I titled it Blended.

When you hear the word blend, what do you think of?

Shout it out.

Okay, I heard mix Smoothie.

Thank you, that was one of the first things I went to.

Right, first I thought of art.

There are people that are much more talented than me that can take a bunch of colors and make it look pretty like Canva.

Okay, they take a bunch of colors and just kind of blend it together and it looks good.

But then you take a smoothie.

Right, and all a smoothie is is it's a bunch of individual things that you put together and you do what, you blend it and it makes something really refreshing and good.

Right, hopefully, unless you put a bad ingredient in there.

But you take your ice and you take your orange juice and you take your blueberries and you take that banana and you blend it all together and you get a real nice smoothie.

Somebody said mix.

I think of a KitchenAid.

Right, you got your KitchenAid.

You throw your flour, your butter, your chocolate chips, whatever else Aunt Mal puts in those chocolate chip cookies.

You put it all in there.

They're all individual ingredients.

They wouldn't taste great by themselves, but the chocolate chips would be good.

But you put it all together, you blend it together and it makes cookie dough that you want to eat before you put it in the oven.

Right, and then it makes some fantastic cookies, makes something really wonderful.

Well, over the next few weeks we're going to start a series on being blended.

We're going to be looking at the life of Moses and Aaron and trying to discover how to get out of the feeling of being a wanderer in the wilderness and into a forever family.

But this morning we're not going to talk about Moses or Aaron.

So we're starting a series about Moses and Aaron, but today we're not going to talk about Moses and Aaron.

Instead, we're going to look, we're going to kind of do it backwards.

We're going to look at the end of the story and then over the next few weeks we're going to go back to the beginning of the story.

So today we're actually going to be in Psalm 133.

And the Bible is composed of a lot of metaphors, so I shouldn't have went through that before.

Does anybody know what a metaphor is?

Good, we're all on the same page.

I had to Google it.

A metaphor is a figure of speech that compares two things, usually by stating that one thing is another.

So you are an open book.

What's that mean?

You're not hidden, you're transparent, you're easy to read.

Somebody said You're just kind of, you're wide open, you're an easy person.

Then there's this exam was a piece of cake.

What's that mean?

It was easy.

I've never been handed a piece of cake, though, when I've taken a test.

But speaking of cake, I figured I would just get this out because so many people have asked.

Woody was a pie guy.

I think I'm a cookie guy and so, if you feel the need or just out of habit, you want to continue to bake.

I know for 36 years you baked pies.

Today it's cookies.

I spent the last two and a half years as we've been thinking about this translation.

What's going to be my thing?

No, I'm just kidding.

I'm just kidding, totally kidding.

I am curious to see what you guys tell me.

My nervous tick is Because I don't think it's going to be that.

It's probably just going to be pacing back and forth, which you probably are used to.

Anyway.

All jokes aside, the Bible is full of a lot of metaphors, in Psalm 133, where we're going to be this morning.

It's not long, so maybe we'll get out of here early.

David is writing to a group of people and he says how wonderful and pleasant it is when brothers and we're going to add sisters in there today, okay, I think that's appropriate so how wonderful and pleasant it is when brothers and sisters live together in harmony.

I want to ask, will you read that with me?

How wonderful and pleasant it is when brothers and sisters live together in harmony?

Psalm 133.

David is writing that to a group of people that are traveling to Jerusalem.

Many times they would travel for yearly events that took place in Jerusalem.

They would travel long ways and there would be much enthusiasm, there would be much anticipation for those who were traveling to get there and to celebrate the yearly holidays that they would.

But like every road trip, it starts off and it's really exciting, right.

But then you get hours in to the road trip and it gets harder and harder to stay positive.

Now I want you to think about this.

David is writing to a group of people that are traveling.

This is a psalm.

This is actually a song of a sin, so this is something they should be singing.

So I'm not a singer, so we're not going to sing that, but David wrote this for this group of people, so that they would sing this, and it's almost like a reminder hey, when you're on this long road trip, remember folks, it's wonderful and pleasant to be together with one another.

So, even though they won't stop talking, it's wonderful and pleasant to be with them.

That's what David's writing and here's what I want you to understand as David is writing to them.

This group of people is traveling to Jerusalem.

There's only so many ways to get to Jerusalem.

So as they get closer and closer, the amount of people traveling in the pack gets bigger and bigger and bigger.

And what happens is, when you add more people to a group, you usually does things go smooth or does it get a little harder, harder.

Yeah.

And this trip that was supposed to be for a celebration, it can be really easy for it to become a complain fest, right.

And so David writes these words.

He says, hey, you should sing about this, because it's wonderful and it's pleasant when God's brothers and sisters live together in harmony.

It's like planning a family trip to the zoo.

When you plan that family trip to the zoo, it's with good intentions, right.

You want to make memories with your kids or your family, and you leave and it's going to be a great day, it's going to be wonderful.

But then, as you're traveling, your youngest kid doesn't stop crying in the vehicle.

And so you're driving and the whole time you just hear screaming and crying.

And then you get to the zoo and one kid wants to go see the otters and the other kid wants to go see the lions and the other kid wants to go see the lions, and somehow the Columbus Zoo didn't know that those would be the two most popular animals that your kids would want to see, so they didn't put them right next to each other.

In fact they're on the complete opposite ends of the zoo.

And so then you're dealing with that mess right.

And so 15 minutes into the trip, you're wondering why did we think this was a good idea?

I was listening to a book this week and it said really, trips for families is just overtime.

Why do we do it to ourselves?

It's just making it harder for you.

You play these trips and it's just overtime.

But that's what's going on in Psalm, in the book of Psalms.

That's who he's writing to.

This group of people is traveling to get to Jerusalem to be together.

It's supposed to be this exciting, awesome thing and he's writing this to remind them.

Hey, it's wonderful and it's pleasant when we live together in harmony.

So we learn a couple things about the idea of being blended or being together.

The first one is this it's real simple.

Today we're keeping it simple.

It's good.

It is good, it's good to be together.

We've read it a few times now how wonderful and pleasant it is when brothers live together in harmony.

The King James Version says this.

It says Behold how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity.

It says Behold.

It says Take notice, follow what's coming next.

This is important.

It deserves our attention.

Look at this.

This is good.

I had three different people this week send me an article and said this would be great for the sermon.

I love it.

I keep sending them.

That makes my job real easy.

Everybody seen that picture, okay, so I don't have to spend a whole lot of time on this, right.

So this is going to be a smooth thing.

The Ohio State football team has large expectations this year.

In fact, many of us have put the expectation of if they don't win the national championship, it's a failure of a season.

They returned, I think, 23 starters or something crazy like that In the world, and all of us are expecting Ohio State to be holding that national championship trophy next year.

In fact, many of you, if you were like me yesterday in the first quarter, goes I cannot believe we're losing to Akron.

I literally said the words the season's over, it is three to nothing and it is over.

It is three to nothing and it is over.

And then my family planned a trip to the Sweetcorn Festival so I left at the end of the first quarter.

So I got to listen to it on the radio.

It didn't sound much better on the radio in the first half.

Really, I didn't have to see it, but it didn't sound.

They end up winning what?

54-6 or something.

I'm going to watch it later today.

Here's my point.

The world says these young men, these 18-year-olds, these 19-year-olds, these 20-year-olds have this expectation of that.

You need to win the national championship.

That's the only thing you need to do this year In six days, before the first game of the season.

These men, one of the leading wide receivers, emeka Abuka, one of the best running backs in the nation, trevion Henderson, one of the best defensive linemen, jt I'm not going to try to say his last name, if you're an Iowa State fan.

You know.

I don't know, and the guy on TV doesn't know either.

He said it different every time yesterday.

Okay, but here's my point you and I, and the world says they need to be on the practice field, they need to be watching film.

You know what they did last Sunday evening.

Most of you know because you sent me the article.

They had a worship night on campus.

I want to read just a few things that I found in an article.

It says that approximately 60 people gave their life to Christ last Sunday evening in Columbus, baptized into Christ.

Speakers included the wide receiver, the running back, the defensive end and former wide receiver, Cameron Babb.

A lot of the reports say there was 800 to 1,000 people that were in attendance.

One of the OSU faculty members in this interview says it was more like 2,000, that they're estimating 2,000.

The faculty member went on to say I'm still flying high from Sunday's gathering, describing the event as truly amazing, that the players shared their heart and their faith in God.

He goes on to say it was all Jesus-based and all focused on him.

They were very vulnerable and it was very moving.

Person after person came.

You could just see the spirit moving in people.

It was different.

It was like nothing I've ever experienced.

That's an Ohio State faculty member that's probably seen a lot, maybe has even seen a national championship on campus and they say that moment is like nothing I've ever seen before.

In an interview with Fox News after the event, cameron Babb, the former wide receiver, said about the turnout of the event.

He said everyone is looking for some kind of hope.

He said I think the human condition wants hope and we throw around the words hope and love and all those different things and I think those things that we're looking for and those things that we're searching for can only be found in Jesus.

That's a 20-year-old man, 20-year-old kid.

I can say that now I'm 31.

It was good for them to be together on Sunday last evening.

That is, brothers and sisters living in harmony.

Those are some guys that know that the mission is more than just a trophy, that the mission is heaven.

I watched an interview with one of them and he said I don't want people to think that this just happened overnight.

He said there's been a group of guys been praying since February that a movement would take place, and so it is.

It's great to see that and say, man, I wish that would happen, but it might take some time.

It might take some time and it might take some prayer, and so it's good for us to be together.

I wanted to throw that in there because it makes it just makes sense.

It's good, it's good to be together.

He goes on to say last thing and then we'll move on.

It was an honor to see my Lord and Savior move in the way that he did.

It was only because of him.

It was only because of him.

It was all to bring him glory.

It wasn't about a football team, it wasn't about anything else besides King Jesus and in that moment, pretty cool stuff.

Being blended is good and pleasant.

Living together in unity or being blended is both good and pleasant, because there's a lot of things in this life that either have to be either one of those, not both.

For example, the Bible tells us in Hebrews, chapter 12, that discipline is good but it's not pleasant.

We've all been disciplined before.

It's good, but it doesn't feel very pleasant If you were disciplined like I was.

Hebrews 12, 11 says no discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful Later on.

However, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.

And then there are some things that are good, or that is pleasant but not good.

Proverbs 25 says that honey is good, but too much honey is pleasant, but too much honey is not good.

It gives you a bellyache right, and so this is one of those things where David writes about and says this is where you can get the good and the pleasant.

And we can do this because we are brothers and sisters in Christ.

How many of you have siblings?

Raise your hand Now.

You get along with your sibling every day.

Right, you see eye to eye on everything.

It is just you guys.

If one of you has an opinion, the other one's like that's absolutely truth.

That's the greatest thing.

I believe it and trust it.

Right, that's how it is right.

That's me and Justin and I's relationship.

We've never had an argument.

We've never fought in the car.

I never slapped my arm and said Mom, he hit me.

That's a trick.

Any young kids that's a trick.

You're the second kid.

Just smack yourself right on the arm and they'd just cry and say he hit me.

It works, I got away with it Most of the time in a family setting.

You don't always see eye to eye, but at the end of the day, you're what You're family, and so you're willing to overcome and get through whatever it is you're going through.

Hebrews 13.1 says this.

It says keep loving each other as brothers and sisters.

Continue to keep loving Even when it Continue to keep loving Even when it's hard.

Keep loving Even when you don't want to keep loving.

Keep loving Even when you're mad.

Keep loving.

Even when you're sad, keep loving.

He goes on to keep writing in Psalm 133.

Where does this come from?

For harmony?

As precious as the anointing oil that was poured over Aaron's head, that ran down his beard and onto the border of his robe.

Harmony is as refreshing as the dew from the Mount Hermon that falls on the mountains of Zion, and there the Lord has pronounced his blessing, even the blessing that's everlasting.

So he keeps writing and this is where we get our metaphor.

That's why I taught you what a metaphor was today, because he starts talking about this oil that runs down Aaron's head.

But it's a good reminder that the blessing of unity and the blessing of being together and the blessing of being blended comes from where.

How does the oil get to Aaron's head?

There's something above pouring it down, and so the blessing comes from above.

It was poured over Aaron's head and it was done to refresh the one receiving the oil and it was to give a good smell from the fragrance that came from the perfumed oils.

The oil was both liquid and had a fragrance and it would flow and it would have a smell.

So there's your question, right, your favorite smell.

This thing is cute, but it stinks.

Here's what I want you to think about, what I want you to focus on.

The blessing of being together and being blended comes from who?

Comes from God.

Aaron received the oil from somebody above him and it ran down.

And what it did was it ran down and it touched every part, and that fragrance would have been noticed as people walked by.

So when you prepare for a sermon at 1 am on a Friday night, you run across some weird articles.

I came across the top five smells that will sell a home.

So, greg, I'm going to need you to tell me if these are true.

Number three is rosemary basil, things like that.

Number two is vanilla.

Number one is citrus, I'm guessing, like clean smell.

You want it to smell clean?

All right, that's top five list.

So if anybody's in the market to sell your home, there you go, all right, top three smells that won't sell your house.

Here we go, and then we're done.

Top three smells Pets, pet odors Number three on the list.

Smoke is number two on the list.

It doesn't make any sense to me, guys.

Number one on the list was cookies.

It is.

I have the article, I'll forward it to you.

It's on the list, it's number one.

You want to know why?

Because when you smell cookies, what do you start thinking about?

You want to eat that cookie.

You're not worried if that kitchen's going to fit your family, you want a cookie, and so the article is saying that fresh food or baked goods is not good because it gets the customer thinking somewhere else.

It was on the article on Google, that's all I got.

So I say all of that to get you to think about this for just a serious, just a second, as we talk about the idea of being blended and as a family of unity, and David uses the metaphor of anointing oil.

What fragrance or smell are we giving off?

Is it a fragrance that is inviting, that makes you want to be a part of it, or is it the smell that wants you to run as far away as you can?

So I know that question didn't make a whole lot of sense as I said it, because I could tell my wife was looking at me like this isn't going anywhere.

But I want you to think about as a family.

So we'll simplify as a family, as a community that's hopefully blended, are we appealing for people to want to be a part of it?

Are we inviting for people to want to take place in it, or are we giving off a feeling of you don't want to be a part of that, you don't want to be in that, a feeling of you don't want to be a part of that.

You don't want to be in that?

He goes on to keep writing about some more metaphors.

He says that harmony is refreshing as the dew from Mount Hermon that falls on the mountains of Zion.

What is the dew going to do for the vegetation on the mountain?

It's going to feed it.

It's going to feed it.

It's going to help it grow.

So unity amongst God's people makes it alive and makes it thriving.

That's not on there it's supposed to be.

Unity among God's people will make lives thrive and healthy.

And, last, it's a foretaste of heaven when God's family is together.

Hopefully, when God is Poured out over, it's a foretaste of heaven.

I want you to think about a moment when you experienced God, where you've witnessed somebody else experience God.

Over my years as a youth minister, we'd go to Winterfest and it was always a highlight trip.

It's one of those things you look forward to, right, and then you got in the van and you realize how stinky kids are.

There are some benefits of the new position, but you'd go on that trip and you'd see teenagers who would experience God, and then they would also see their peers experience God's presence and you would oftentimes, on the way home, we'd go man, that was so good Because you felt God in the moment.

So David is writing to a group of people that is traveling.

It's been a long day's journey.

People are getting annoying, you're getting restless and he says don't forget that when you do things together, it is so good and it is so beautiful, the Christian fellowship we experience through the Holy Spirit here on earth, as beautiful as it is, is only a foretaste of the perfect fellowship that we will share with each other in heaven.

And so over the next few weeks, as we kind of look at this series, we will look at the life of Moses and Aaron.

I promise we'll get there.

Moses and Aaron were not always the best of friends.

Moses and Aaron did not always the best of friends.

Moses and Aaron did not always see eye to eye.

In fact, at one point Moses is on the mountain with God and Aaron's making a gold calf Right.

They didn't always see eye to eye, but over the next few weeks we're going to try to look at the life of Moses and Aaron and look at how God individually put them together to make something that was wonderful and pleasant for God.

And I do believe that God has placed each and every one of us in the moment that we're in right now that as individuals we may not be a whole lot, but when we're put together it's something real precious.

That oil that ran over Aaron's head was a bunch of individual ingredients that were put together to make something wonderful.

I truly believe that God is working in such a way in our community and in and around the world.

I'm encouraged by the way that God's working in our world.

I know you can see the news and look for a lot of bad, but there's a lot of good, too, that God's working in our world.

I know you can see the news and look for a lot of bad, but there's a lot of good, too, that God is working in individual ways to make something wonderful and pleasant, and so we are going to spend some time looking at that over the next few weeks.

So let's pray.

God.

We thank you for this day.

God, we thank you for this time together.

God, we thank you for the way that you work in our life.

God, I thank you for each and every person that's here this morning and God, in the way that you've worked in their life to place them here in this moment.

And God, I pray that, as we kind of dive into this idea of being blended, being dependent on one another, god, that you placed us together so that we could work together to be something that's wonderful and pleasant.

That you've put the new mom and the widow in the same room.

That you've put the hurting with someone that's already been through it.

God, I'm thankful for the way that you work and the way that you continue to work in our lives.

God, we pray for opportunities to see and to experience the way that you're working in our lives.

Thank you for Jesus.

It's in his name we pray, amen.

Just as I am without one plea, but that thy blood was shed for me and that thou bidst me come to thee.

O Lamb of God, I come.
