Pastor Tim Dunn "Anointed" (Sunday 4-6-25)

speaks to you in this message.

Well I did this morning to our group. I did

talk about expectation and oldustree about a friend, somebody I know.

I was talking to him and he shared with me

that a church he had been attending for a while,

he said, I just something was off, and he told me,

he said, he said, I just had this overwhelming feeling

that when I walked in, everybody was nice, and everybody

was welcoming and all of that.

But we had lost our expectation.

We had lost our hope that when we come together

that God was gonna do something powerful.

Amen. We lost our expectation that a miracle could take

place in that moment at that time. Amen.

Let us not ever lose our expectation of what God

would want to do any time we're in his presence.

Amen. Amen, Let's make sure that we keep that alive. Hallelujah.

Over the next couple weeks, I'm starting a series today

and we're gonna look at three distinct things that Jesus

went me to the cross and after the cross, and

today is simply titled or labeled anointed.

Anointed. Hallelujah, man, I feel his presence so strong in

this place.

I know you just sat down, and we do a

lot of calistenics here in this church.

I've been down, up and down. I'm gonna ask you

to stand one more time now.

I will ask you to stand one more time later

on when I close, but you'll be glad to stand then. No,

I'm just playing Matthew, chapter twenty six, verse six. And

when Jesus was in Bethany at the house of Simon

the Leper, a woman came to him having an alabaster flask,

a very costly fragrant oil, very costly fragrant, and she

poured it on his head as he sat at the table.

When his disciples saw it, they were indignant, saying, why

this waste. It's valuable, very costly fragrant being poured over

his head. No doubt they saw it splashing on the floor,

for this fragrant of oil might have been sold for

much and given to the poor.

Jesus was aware of it, and he said.

To them, why do you trouble this woman for me?

For you have the poor with you always, but me

you do not have always. For in pouring this fragrant

oil on my body, she did it for my burial.

She did it for my burial.

Amen, I'm convinced that she didn't even know that's what

it was for. She did it for a completely different

purpose and reason.

Assuredly. Verse thirteen.

I say to you, wherever the gospel, this gospel is

preached in the whole world, well this woman has done

will also be told as a.

Memorial to her. Amen.

You can be seated and Matthew, she anointed his head.

But we're also given another depiction. Mark tells same story

I did. I didn't put Mark. I'm'a just read Mark,

chapter fourteen, verse three. I didn't give it to them,

so they don't have to. If you have your Bible,

you can just look with me. And being in Bethany,

in the house of Simon the Leper, as he sat

at meat, there came a.

Woman having an alabaster box.

Of ointment of spikenard, very precious, very precious, and she

brake the box and poured it on his head.

Then we have.

Another one, and it appears to be some similarities. And

John chapter twelve spend six days before the passover. Jesus

comes to bethany where Lazarus was, who had been dead,

whom he had raised from the dead, And there they

made him a supper, and Martha served Tlazarus was one

of those who sat at the table with him. And

then Mary took a pound of very costly oil of

spikenard and anointed the feat of Jesus and wiped his

feet with her hair, and the house was filled with

the fragrance of oil. Same deals happens. Judas is there,

Judas is scoffing at her. Why are you doing this

all of these things? Judas had other reasons. He had

thievery in his heart, and so that's why he was

counting the cost of the spikenard, because he had already

performed some things in his heart. And you know the

story how he would betray Jesus. But in verse seven

of John twelve, Jesus said, let her alone quit bugging her.

She has kept this for the day of my burial,

for the poor you have with you always, but have

always As we look at this, commentators tend to have

some differing views.

It appears to be from.

What I can read, the same woman Mary that d

that performs both acts, but in two different locations at

two different times within One was a few days before

his week of passion. One came after during his week

of passion.

And so.

It both happened in Bethany, both at the house of Simon.

But historians say it's two s different Simon. Simon was

a very popular name back then. It's not odd to

have two people in the same town with the name

of There's a lot of times there's two Thames in

this church house right now, Pastor Tim. And as he said,

non pastor Tim.

My first name is not pastor. It is Tim.

But without getting into all of the conflicting opinions of

these two occurrences, I want to focus on what Mary

actually did. She anointed him, She anointed his feet, she

anointed his head. When we look at the practice of

anointing in Scripture, it would have been completely acceptable for

her to follow culture well, for her to follow the

Old Testament pattern of anointing, which is taking a ramshorn

that had not been trimmed at the end.

This was made as a shofar.

But they would take similar ram's horn and they would

fill it with oil, and they would take the ram's

horn full of oil, and that person would bow and

they would pour the oil over that person's head. And

so this represented tradition, this represented normal practice. If she

was worried about cultural things, if she was worried about

the normal practice, if she was worried about staying in

line with tradition and ritual, she would have taken a

horn of oil and she would have poured it over

his head. But she didn't do that. Mary doesn't worry

herself with tradition, with custom, or with practice.

She makes it personal. It personal.

She brings something that cost her. She brings something precious,

possibly an heirloom that's been passed down from generation the

generation before, something very costly. And she wasn't doing this

for others to see. This was between her and Jesus.

She didn't care what the men in the room thought.

She didn't care that they would scoff at her and

they would accuse her of being wasteful. She didn't care

what they thought of her. This was between her and Jesus.

And I believe this was birth in her days, weeks,

maybe even months in her mind. And she may have

been in her house and she looked around, and there

are on the shelf. She saw this alabaster box, this

clay box of fragranced oil. And maybe her grandmother had

given it to her or passed it down from a

great grandmother. And there it is, and everybody it was

a conversational piece when everybody came to.

Mary and Martha's house.

And there there it was, sitting there, and and and

she she looked, and and yes, it could fulfill its

days sitting on a shelf, collecting dust and only being

talked about.

But in the hearts and in the mind of Mary.

Something grew in her, something happened in her. It was this,

that little fragranced oil meant something more. It had a

greater purpose. And and so she takes it down and

she carries it with her to where Jesus is and

she enters this room where the disciples are and they're

having supper, and they're and not disturbing him.

And she didn't make a.

Scene like, hey, buddy, to stop and watch what I'm

about to do.

It wasn't about anybody else.

It was just between her and Jesus. Mark says she

broke it, maybe cracked it on the chair that he

was sitting in, and let every drop of that costly

heirloom fragrance to oil pour over the head of Jesus.

John said she reached down and she poured it over

his feet and began to wash his feet with her hair. Man,

it was personal, you see. I don't believe she had

a full understanding of what she was doing.

I really don't.

I don't believe she knew the magnitude of this act,

how anointing his head signified and indicated him as the

head of the church. I don't believe she fully grasped

how anointing his feet prepared him to put all things

under his feet Amen, including death and the grave just

a few days from that point. I don't believe that's

what was necessarily on her mind. Now she knew Jesus,

she had spent time with Jesus, she had followed him,

she heard him teach, she saw miracles.

But I'm not sure she understood that this.

Fufillment of Old Testament scripture Amen, how anointing was for

kings and for Priest, and that in this moment she

was anointing the King of kings, and in this moment

she was anointing defeat of our great High Priest, Amen,

I don't believe that's what was on her mind.

We have the.

Privilege of standing back two thousand some odd years removed

from that and seeing the whole picture.

But to her it was just personal. It was just

her and Jesus. Amen.

Maybe she knew the Hebrew word for Messiah, which is marciak,

which means anointed one.

Or the Greek word.

Christos, which also means anointed one. Maybe she knew those words.

Maybe she had studied the Old Testament scripture and Hebrew

and understood what that meant, and seen some translations. When

it got to when everything turned to the Greek and

the New Testament was written in the Greek, and because

of Alexander, the Great between the Testaments came and.

Conquered that part of the world.

Maybe she understood the meaning of those words. But I

also wonder if the words that the prophet Daniel wrote

were in her mind. And Daniel chapter nine, verse twenty four,

seventy weeks are determined for your people and for your

Holy city, to finish the transgression. Amen, to make an

end of sins. Anybody remember those three words that Jesus

uttered on the cross?

It is finished.

Points to what Daniel spoke a man, an end of sins,

Not that there people would in sin, but the reign

of sin, the dominion of sin, the bondage of sin.

Would be broken on the cross.

Amen, to make reconciliation for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness,

to seal up vision and prophecy.

And to anoint the most holy Man.

I wonder, honestly, I don't believe that any of this

was on her mind when she did this, When she

anointed his head and she anointed his feet. I believe

she came to him on two separate occasions to pour

this oil upon him, simply because she loved him man,

simply because she was making it personal. Now, the interesting

thing is this, she was offended by Jesus.

She was hurt by Jesus.

She was frustrated with him because they sent for him

when her brother Lazarus.

Was sick and he did not come.

Man, how dare him not come? After all they had

been through, they had walked with him, they had they

had they had out him to be in their home,

and they have made they had made dinner for him,

and they had spent time with him, and he they

asked him to come to heal their brother Lazarus, and

he never came, and their brother Lazarus died.

Amen, he was late.

Maybe she did this because she needed him to forgive her.

I believe she came.

I believe it was because she loved him and wanted

to worship him.

That's what it was.

She didn't care what the people in the room thought.

She wasn't worried about the disciples disdain for her act.

She poured, she broke, she honored, she surrendered, She worshiped.

She did with her story before us. What about yours?

Is your worship practice or personal? Amen? Is worship something

you do just when you come to church? Or is

it personal to you.

That on any given day of the week you find

yourself pouring out upon Him, breaking things that need to

be broken in your life upon him, surrendering yourself, surrending

your heart and your mind. Or is it just merely practice?

Is your anointing tradition.

Or is it personal?

Is your worship a part of a ritual of church going?

Or is it personal? Is it something that you value greatly?

Is it something that holds very great cost in your life?

Or is it merely tradition? Only you can answer that. Amen.

Are you worried about what others think? Are you worried

about what others might say? Are you worried about what

they might value your sacrifice of worship at or make

scoff at how you worship or what you pour.

Out to him? Amen? Are you worried? Or is? Do

you love him enough? Does it matter what anybody thinks?

I have something to pour out to him? Amen?

He was anointed, She had all of this stuff that

she was fulfilling by doing this, and I don't believe

any of it.

Was on her mind. All she knew is.

This is my Lord and my Savior, This is my King,

this is my High Priest, this is my Messiah.

And I'm going to worship him. Amen. So do you

have something in your life that needs to be poured out? Man?

Do you have something in your life that needs to

be broken before him surrendered to him?

Man?

Is there a reason for your worship to be personal

to your King, your high Priest, your Messiah, your Savior?

Amen?

I want my wife to come, Hallelujah.

Psalms, chapter sixty two, Verse five. My soul, my soul.

I want you to think about that word, my soul, hallelujah.

You know it's something that we know. We know we

have a soul. We know it's gonna spend eternity somewhere.

We're either going to spend eternity with Him in heaven and.

Glory or elsewhere.

I hope nobody spends eternity anywhere else but in glory

with him.

That's why the church was ever created.

Was so that no soul would ever be lost, Amen,

because that wasn't created for you and I.

My soul.

You ever thought about your soul when worshiping? You ever

thought about your soul when talking to the Lord? You

ever talk to the Lord about your soul.

It's one of those things that's kind of.

We know it's there, we're not sure how to understand it,

how to explain it. Is it floating around on the

inside of our body?

What's going on there? We don't have science that can

figure all of this out. It's one of those mysteries,

but we know we've got a soul, my soul.

Wait, thou only upon God, for my expectation is from him,

My hope is from him, My faith is in him.

My expectation is from him. The writer is saying, I

don't expect anything from anybody else.

But from Him, because people will do what people do,

they'll let us down. But Jesus, But Jesus is faithful

Verse six. He only is my rock and my salvation.

Him only.

I don't put my life. I don't build my life

on anything else. Him only is my rock and my salvation.

He is my defense. I will not be moved off

of this rock verse seven. And God is my salvation

and my glory. The rock of my strength and my

refuge is in God.

Verse eight.

Trust trust in Him at all times, you people, and

pour out your heart before Him, precious, valuable, costly. You

see anointing as you stand with me. The purpose of

it was to set up.

Authority. That's what it did. David was anointed to be king.

Right when you anoint someone, you set.

Them up for a place of authority.

David was anointed to be king of Israel, just like

Samuel was, just.

Like Saul was.

Just the priests, the levitical tribe, the high priests were

anointed to go before God for the people a place

of spiritual authority. On behalf of the people, the high

priest would go into the Holy of Holies, that place

so sacred. It was this process of pouring out.

To exalt. The oil was poured out.

And their position was exalted to a place of authority.

I want to tell you what your worship does. When

your worship is personal praise and your worship come from

the soul, the heart of a person, and you pour

that out on him, not out of practice, not out

of ritual, not out of tradition, but out of a

personal relationship with him. When your praise is poured out,

it anoints Jesus to a place of power and authority

in your life. That's what it does. That's why it's

so powerful. That's why it's so precious. That's why it

can't ever become something we just do in a building

on a Sunday morning when we're gathered together.

That's why it can't be hindered by anybody else.

My worship can't be determined by what you think of me.

Amen.

You know why, because I'm not exalting you as lord

of my life. I'm exalting him as Lord of my life.

Hallelujah.

And I would encourage every single one of you what

this lady Mary.

Gave us an example of in the presence of the

spiritual hierarchy of the disciples. She cared less what they thought,

and she poured out something precious. Do you have anything

to pour out to him this morning? I wonder once

again if we could close our eyes hallelu Yeah, hellelujah, hallelujah.

A You see, this is the thing.

Sometimes our heart pours itself into other things, a form

of our worship is poured out into other things other

than Him, and so those things become exalted as.

Authorities in our life.

But here today, standing together in his presence, I feel

him asking. He asked me when I was studying for this,

he asked me, have anointed me? Have you anointed me

to a place of authority in your life?

Amen? And honestly I had to think, Lord, have I

do I need.

To break some things at your feet today? Do I

need to pour some things out before you today?

So that's why I bring this question to you. Amen.

Do you have something that's personal, something that's going on

in your life, something that needs to be broken or

surrendered to Him.

Hallelujah.

If you do, if you have anything like that, I

want to open the front of this church building as

an altar, and I want to invite you right now

to step out from where you're at, Amen, and come

and kneel around the front of this building and begin

to just poor begin to just pour what needs to

be poured out to hill.

Hallelujah, hallelujah. Amen, hallelujah.

If there's something that needs to be surrendered, why don't

you step out from where you're at and make your

way up hallelujah.

Doesn't matter what people think. This is between you and Jesus. Amen,

This is between you and the Lord.

Hallelujah, hallelujah. I do this because I love them, I

need them.

I've got something to work out in my life.

I've got something I need to break before Him today.

Halleujah.
