Mark 6:1-29 || The Book of Mark || Gabriel Guzman

Welcome to the ALC Podcast. Here at ALC, we seek the loss,

is Gabriel. I worked for the children's department here at the church. So

thank you, thank you. If you ever dropped off your kids,

you might have seen me over there. We've got a great team with Colin

and Alyssa. They're holding it down right now while I'm over here. So

your kids are safe, they're accounted for. It's all right. But I'm

gonna spend some time with you guys tonight going through the Word. If that's

all right, I gotta get with you guys, all right. I hope

this series has been good for you guys, the series of Mark. I

hope you guys have had your journals. You guys got your journals. You

guys have been riding those. It's been a lot, really fruitful for you

guys that you've been seeing God's through in your life. Going through the Book

of Mark. We have fantastic preaching going through here, going through every verse,

explaining what's going on and how it can apply to your life. And

so today we're going to be in chapter six of the Book of Mark.

And so if you have your Bibles, or you have your journals, or

you have your phone, or you're watching online, you just want to listen.

We're going to be going through chapter six. But before we get into

it, somebody came up to me before service started and they said they had

an announcement that they wanted to make during service. And I thought the best

time for it to happen would be right before we get into the sermon,

because it is going to be a great segue into what we're talking about today.

It's gonna be a perfect segue into the topic today. So Mark,

I got a mic here for you, my man. The floor is yours.

Go ahead, all right, guys. I'm really nervous about this,

okay, but I have something written down right here, and I just want

to say it right now. Alyssa. From the moment we met, I

knew there was something extraordinary about you. Our shared faith has deepened my love

for you, and I believe that God has brought us together for a purpose

today under the vast guy that he created. I want to make a covenant

with you. Will you marry me? I'm sorry? No, okay,

okay, okay, Hey Mark, Mark, Mark, Mark is it's it.

We got Pastor Kenny right here for you. He's available for counseling.

But that is a great transition to what we're talking about today, because today

we're talking about rejection. We're talking about not only was I know it was

hard for me to keep a straight face. We're talking about the people sitting

next to him where they couldn't believe it. It was too good to be

true for some people, and it was it was. But we're talking about

rejection. And not only was Jesus rejected, but he prepares us to be

rejected as well. So you guys, got your bibles open to Mark chapter

six. If you guys can stand up for me really quick, we're gonna

read Mark chapter six right now. I got the first twenty nine verses here,

so we're only going up to verse twenty nine, and then thirty is

a whole other thing. So I'm grateful I only have twenty nine verses today,

as opposed to Pastor Diego's had the roughest. I think they give him

two chapters at a time. But we're gonna start reading. We're only gonna

read the first six verses here, uh, the word says. He went

away from there and came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him,

And on the Sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who

heard him were astonished, saying, where did this man get these things?

What is the wisdom given to him? How are such mighty works done by

his hands? Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the

brother of James, and Josephs and Judas and Simon, And are not his

sisters here with us? And they took offense at him, and Jesus said

to them, a prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and among

his relatives, and in his own household. And he could do no mighty

work there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and

healed them. And he marveled because of their unbelief. And he went about

among the villages, teaching, you guys can have a seat. Let's pray,

Lord, we come before you right now, and we just pray that

you get me out of the way. Tonight. God, people came to

hear you tonight. God, they didn't come to hear a man speaking with

man's wisdom. Lord. I pray that your word would go forth tonight,

Lord, that people's lives would change, that people would get ministered too,

and that we'd be sensitive to your word and what it has to say to

us. In your name, we pray, Amen. Amen. Well,

as I open, we're talking about rejection, and rejection is really throughout this

these whole twenty nine verses here and raise your hand if you love getting rejected.

No, no, no, no no. Mark's hand is wayed down

right now. Right now, I don't know. Nobody likes being rejected.

And there's different ways we can get rejected. You can get rejected in a

proposal like right now. That's the worst way to get rejected. And we

all witness that. And how did you feel when she said no and you

realize this actually isn't happening right now? We didn't even get rejected, and

we felt terrible about it. Maybe you get rejected from a job you ever

put your application in, they don't give you a call back, or you

even go in for you take the extra tep to go for an interview,

but they're going in another direction. If anybody's been applying to schools for I

don't know what month it is, for the fall, I guess if you

ever applied for a college and you get rejected, that's a tough thing.

That's a tough thing. We're talking about rejection today. This first section obviously

illustrates really good rejection with Jesus himself, and it's throughout these whole verses we're

going to be talking about. In the first six verses a rejection of familiarity,

in verses seven to thirteen, a rejection by proximity, and in verses

fourteen to twenty nine, rejection by pressure. So let's get into it.

Let's start breaking down. I know we already read the first section, but

let's start breaking down these verses as we get into it. So verse one

got your friends ready, let's get into it. He went away from there

and came to his home town, and his disciples followed him, And on

the Sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him

were a star, saying, where did this man get these things? What

is the wisdom given to him? How are such mighty works done by his

hands, and we'll stop right there for now. We're gonna be doing a

lot of back and forth now, okay, so just keep your finger on

your bible, keep your pen on your bible at all times, because at

any time we're just gonna go right back into it and continue on with the

verses and we'll get through all of these in a timely fashion. I promise

we'll hold on to your seats here. So just a little bit of a

recap if you weren't here for Pastor Aaron's message right before this. But Jesus

just got finished healing Gyrus's daughter, and Pastor Nathan and Pastor Aaron, we're

both talking about how Jesus has power. That's what chapter five was really coming

across with Jesus has power, and Pastor Aaron talks about how faith kind of

plays a role in there, and there's a difference between the woman, the

woman's faith and Gyrus's faith there. And so now we get into chapter six

and we're gonna see a lot of rejection with Jesus, some rejection with his

followers, some rejection of his word. And so Jesus has power and he's

showing everybody his power and people are amazed and astonished by his power. He's

going to get rejected. So that's what Mark is going to show us right

now, that in spite of Jesus's power, there's rejection that follows, and

we got to wrestle through that. And we're going to do that tonight on

how that works. So in these first two verses, they're asking some good

questions here. These people are asking genuine questions. Where did this man get

these things? How does he have this wisdom? They seem unaware of how

Jesus is so wise with the scriptures as he's teaching in the synagogue. And

I think this speaks even to Jesus's humanity while in the Gospels, because he's

at his hometown now he left Jyrus's daughter and now he's in the hometown of

Nazareth. That's where he grew up. Those are his people, that's where

he's from. And so it just goes to show that they're really confused when

Jesus says on the scene, because he wasn't he wasn't how should I put

this, He wasn't fool yet, if that makes sense. Jesus grew when

he was growing up. He grew up just like all of us in this

humanity. If you're a man in here, you've been to any of the

men's events Luke two fifty two. It says, and Jesus increased in wisdom

and in stature, and in favor with God and man. So he wasn't

just he wasn't Jesus aged thirty three when he was five and taking these people

to school in the synagogue, throwing it down and going christ. I mean

he did that a little bit at twelve. That will see, like,

oh, he's growing in wisdom, he really grows. But right now he's

growing. So they're asking these questions where did this guy come from? It

turns out where did he get these things? Because we didn't have these here.

This wasn't this wasn't Jesus before. But it starts to switch up little

bit. Their questions change a little bit, from being genuine to being a

little cynical, to being slight slight handed. They're giving them a right hand

right now. Verse three, is not this the carpenter, the son of

Mary and brother of James, and Josephs and Judas and Simon are not his

sisters here with us and they took offense at him, and Jesus said to

them in verse four, a prophet is not without honor except in his hometown,

among his relatives, and in his own household. So now their questions

are different. It's not the same kind of it starts to go down the

rabbit hole of getting more in cynical. Here, it's not as it's not

as, it's not as cut cutthroat. They're saying. I don't know if

you've ever been in a situation where somebody does something, maybe they're trying to

impress you, maybe they're I don't know, just something doesn't it comes off

the wrong way. This guy, this guy's right here to them, Jesus

is just this guy. Who is this guy? Who does this guy think

he is trying to share this wisdom right now? And not only do they

just think who is he? But they call it they use a they almost

use a derogatory statement here, they say son of Mary. I don't know

if you know this, but that's the only time that that phrase is used

in the New Testament. This is the only time Jesus is referred to as

the son of Mary. You know, culturally, especially back then and even

Scripturally, he's always referred to as the son of Joseph. But here's the

son of Mary. You know, he grew up in Nazareth, so those

people would know his situation giving breath. You're right there with me. I

love it, he will if you're unaware. The Holy Spirit impregnated Mary.

So Joseph's not really the father. And so it's almost a sleight of hand

to him, son of Mary, because I can't call you the son of

your daddy because if we don't know who that is. Right, she said

that it was the Holy Spirit, But who knows at this point? Who

knows what the wisdom you're sharing right now? I don't know what to think

anymore, Son of Mary. You see that they're they're rejecting Jesus right now.

Jesus is facing rejection in his hometown. Their their familiarity, that's what

I'm talking about. Their familiarity with Jesus, how familiar they were with him,

leads to their rejection of him. Ultimately, Now, what does this

say for us today? For us today? What what is that? What

that could that even look like? Well, you know, maybe maybe you

know some people that have been raised in church, their whole life and then

they end up leaving the faith. Maybe maybe maybe people have just been burnt

out on Christianity. They've been there, they'd done that with the church.

They become too they're they're they're so familiar with it. Oh I know Christians,

I know, I know that life. I left that life because I

didn't like the way it went down or I didn't like this, or that.

They didn't they didn't like it. Their their familiarity. Oh, they

lost their love for the Savior there. I want to encourage you guys tonight

that we want you to come to church as much as you can. We

want you to read your Bible as much as you can, we want you

to pray as much as you can. But you have to remember that you

cannot lose your love for the Savior when you're doing all those things, because

if you don't and you're not careful, it could lead to rejection. The

people in Nazareth were right there with him physically. They had the physical Jesus

there, they had physical wisdom there, and they rejected him. And so

we can't think we're so much better than those people in the Bible that didn't

know what was going on when they had the man right there. It happens

all the time with us today. And we have to be careful, and

we have to be watchful, and we have to be on our toes to

make sure that we always have that love and that love matches where God loves

for us. Verse five. This is the interesting thing here. This You

guys might have looked at this verse and like whoa And he could do no

mighty work there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people

and healed them. So what happened? We just saw Jesus doing mighty works

in chapter five. He was bringing people back from the dead in chapter five,

and now he gets to Nazareth and he can't do anything there except it

says, heal a few sick people. What's going on? Why? Why?

Why? Why could Jesus not do that? Is he not all powerful

anymore? Can he not do anything he wants to do anymore? Well,

Pastor Aaron gave us a little glimpse into what that is. Faith, Faith

and God's power go hand in hand. That plays a role. Faith plays

a role here. And so the people of Nazareth reject Jesus and so he's

not gonna It's not that he couldn't do anything, It's that he he wouldn't

do anything. He's not gonna getting God's We really hope you enjoyed the message,
