  1. For those of you who don't know me, my name

  2. is Joel and every once in a while I come

  3. by hair. I sit on the board of directors of

  4. Patriot Church, and I'm always so privileged and take really

  5. seriously the responsibility of opening up the Word to you,

  6. and especially tonight because as we're continuing our study through Mark,

  7. it lands us in Mark thirteen, where Jesus talks about

  8. the end times and he teaches on the end Times.

  9. Now I know how some of you are responding to that,

  10. because you're going, wow, really, I mean, I've got miracles

  11. that I need, I need a job tomorrow. Some of

  12. you here and you've got despair or you've got broken relationships,

  13. and you're going the last thing I want or need

  14. is a teaching about something I am so removed from.

  15. But that's why Jesus gave the teaching, because he doesn't

  16. want us so removed from. Because I've noticed with a

  17. lot of people, there are a few of you and

  18. you're really into. When somebody's really into the end Times,

  19. I mean they're really to it. They are sold out,

  20. they're at seminars, they're reading books, and good for them,

  21. But for most of us, it just seems like a blur.

  22. It seems like so removed and so hard to understand,

  23. and pictures and ideas that we just you know, I'll

  24. stay in Philippians. Don't take me to revelation. That's where

  25. I can live. Can you believe that? Tonight? As we

  26. look at Jesus's teaching on the End Times, one of

  27. the reasons why he gave it was he wants to

  28. plant in you a truth for today that will transform

  29. you tonight that she'll wake up with tomorrow morning, ready

  30. to have it as a tool, as a resource that

  31. will carry you forward. It's not just about a knowledge

  32. of a distant future. It's about a revelation and a

  33. truth for you today that can give you the faith

  34. and the hope and the courage that you need as

  35. you navigate this life. So I'm going to start us

  36. out by praying, and I'm going to ask that you

  37. will pray Jesus deposit something in me through a teaching

  38. I normally don't read or really understand very well that

  39. will actually help me tomorrow morning when I wake up. Lord,

  40. we are grateful. We are so grateful, Lord God, that

  41. you know what we need and that you didn't leave

  42. us alone to figure stuff out. But you taught us.

  43. And as we open up your word now, Lord Spirit

  44. of God, would you teach us with clarity and with simplicity.

  45. May we grab a hold of something deep in our

  46. heart and our mind and our soul that literally will

  47. change how we live out with you tomorrow our day.

  48. I thank you for each person here. I thank you

  49. for their life. You know their needs, you know their questions,

  50. Lord God, May tonight be part of your answer to them.

  51. We pray this in the name of Christ. Amen. Amen.

  52. All right, solved your Bibles to Mark chapter thirteen, and

  53. we're going to study this passage now. Before we get

  54. into it thoroughly, there are two truths that you've really

  55. got to get a hold of that are the most important.

  56. There are two truths that kind of lay the foundation

  57. for this entire study of Mark thirteen. The first one

  58. comes in chapter thirteen, verse thirty two. Here's what Jesus said,

  59. But about that day or hour, no one knows, not

  60. even angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.

  61. So here's the first truth. Nobody really knows. The specificicity

  62. of November twenty six, twenty twenty seven. Nobody really knows this.

  63. The question we have to ask is why keep it

  64. a secret. Why wouldn't you just tell people, I mean,

  65. at to very least scare them into salvation. There is

  66. a reason why God, in his infinite wisdom, keeps this

  67. a secret, because he knows in our humanity. If we

  68. were to know five years from now, twenty years from now,

  69. I thing upon the date was, it would affect how

  70. we would live out our faith. If it's far enough

  71. down the road. We're all a bit of procrastinators, aren't we.

  72. If it's really close immediate, we wouldn't take our eyes

  73. off of Jesus. Some of us wouldn't be present now,

  74. we'd just be thinking about that date. So God and

  75. as if it was, and says, I'm not gonna tell you.

  76. I want you to live by faith, but I'm not

  77. gonna live you leave you blind either. I'm gonna give

  78. you some ideas. So the first truth is no one knows.

  79. Here's the second truth. It's in verse twenty six of

  80. Mark thirteen. At that time, people will see the Son

  81. of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory,

  82. and he will send his angels and gather his elect

  83. from the four winds from the ends of the earth

  84. to the ends of the heaven. Here's the second truth.

  85. It will happen. Nobody knows, but it will happen. We

  86. may not know when, we may not all agree on how.

  87. But you can take it to the bank. He says,

  88. this will happen. This truth that the Lord is returning,

  89. that there is another world, a new Heaven, and a

  90. new Earth. And this is central to our Christianity. This

  91. is eternity. This is where we want to go. Have

  92. you ever felt like you just don't fit in here,

  93. like you don't belong on this earth, Like you always

  94. feel like you're a little out of place. Do you

  95. know why you feel like you don't fit in here?

  96. Because you don't fit in here as a christ follower,

  97. as a new believer, as a born again believer. You

  98. were made for another kingdom. You were made for another world.

  99. And the two truths that Jesus lays down as kind

  100. of a foundation, which are most important to get a

  101. hold of, is we're not quite sure when it's gonna be,

  102. but we know it is going to be, and that's

  103. where we ultimately want to land. That's where we want

  104. to get to the Bible describes the early church as

  105. every day they eagerly awaited the return of the Savior.

  106. I want to start a practice where I wake up

  107. in the morning my first prayer to Jesus is today,

  108. Lord today. How would it affect how I work, how

  109. I relate to people, how I handle my time? If

  110. I said today, Lord today, That's where I want to go.

  111. So we're going to look at three questions that Mark

  112. thirteen jesus teaching answers Why he taught it? What will happen?

  113. And how do we prepare ourselves for that? Why he

  114. taught it? What will happen? How do we prepare ourselves

  115. for that? So first, why did he teach this? Look

  116. at the first six verses of Mark chapter thirteen. As

  117. Jesus was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said

  118. to him, look, Teacher, what massive stones, what magnificent buildings.

  119. He says, Wow, look at this temple. Lord, isn't it amazing?

  120. Verse two, do you see all these great buildings? Replied Jesus.

  121. Not one stone here will be left on another. Everyone

  122. will be thrown down. As Jesus sitting on the Mount

  123. of Olives opposite the temple, Peter James and John and

  124. Andrew asked him privately, tell us when will these things

  125. happen and what will be a sign that they're about

  126. to be fulfilled? And Jesus said to them, watch out

  127. that no one deceives you. Many will come in my

  128. name claiming I am Him and will deceive many. Jesus,

  129. I'm gonna teach you about this to protect you from

  130. being deceived. And the possibility of deception is there. It

  131. will happen, it is currently happening. Or if you're not

  132. aware of what's going on, you can be distracted. You

  133. can be deceived in many different ways. You can find

  134. yourself as a Christian having the wrong focus, where you

  135. begin to look everywhere else just to Jesus, and you're

  136. looking at what's happening in the political realm or an

  137. election year. You look at what's happening in the world,

  138. you look at what happening in your life, and you

  139. get your eyes off a sense of eternity, and you

  140. get so consumed with the world today, and all of

  141. a sudden, now you are open for deception that will

  142. shift you away from the focus Jesus wants you to have.

  143. He says, don't be deceived you could be lulled to

  144. sleep where you limit your faith and your identity as

  145. a Christian to this world? Do you eagerly await? Does

  146. that sense of eternity really drive you today and your

  147. values and your time and your money. Jesus, listen, disciples,

  148. I don't want you to be unprepared. You'll be saved.

  149. What are you active so that you are ready for

  150. this and you are participating in the events that are

  151. going to take place in a way that brings redemption

  152. to people in your neighborhood and in your country and

  153. brings the glory to God. You go, oh, I came

  154. to a Wednesday night's service. Jesus said, you got to

  155. know this stuff because it will protect you. Don't avoid it,

  156. don't misunderstand it, be aware of it. That's why he

  157. teaches it. So I go, Okay, Lord, you said, we'll

  158. listen to it. And he answers these two questions, what

  159. will happen? And how do I prepare myself? So I'm

  160. gonna read you a fairly long set of verses because

  161. it's important. As we read these verses, look for the

  162. traits of kind of what does this look like? What

  163. are we gonna be looking for and see how he

  164. describes it, not so much in detail, but overall. Starting

  165. in verse seven, when you hear of wars and rumors

  166. of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen,

  167. but the end is still to come. Nation will rise

  168. against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes.

  169. Oh you know that, don't you well. There will be

  170. earthquakes in various places and famines. These are the beginning

  171. of birth pains. This is the first metaphor he uses.

  172. He uses two one is birth pains, so he says,

  173. just like a woman, a mom who's gonna give birth.

  174. This is a metaphor to understand and be able to

  175. be aware. This is the beginning of birth pains. Verse nine.

  176. You must be on your guard. You will be handed

  177. over to local councils and flogged in the synagogues on

  178. account of me. You will stand before governors and kings's

  179. witnesses to them, and the gospel must first be preached

  180. to all the nations. Whenever you are arrested and brought

  181. to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say.

  182. Just say whatever is given to you at the time,

  183. for it is not you speaking, But the Holy Spirit,

  184. something divine is going to be taking place in this process,

  185. where the presence of the Holy Spirit being able to

  186. work through you in ways you may not have experienced before,

  187. filling your mouth with the words that God wants you

  188. to speak. Verse twelve. Brother will betray brother to death.

  189. Family conflict, community conflict, and as father or father his child,

  190. children will rebel against their parents and have them put

  191. to death. Everyone will hate you because of me, But

  192. the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.

  193. When you see the abomination that causes desolation standing where

  194. it does not belong. This is a funky phrase. It

  195. comes from a prophecy in Daniel, where it happened before

  196. Jesus said this. It even happened after Jesus said this,

  197. where opposing nations desecrated the temple of God the presence

  198. of God by putting like pigs on the altar and stuff.

  199. So Jesus is referring to that. He goes, you know what,

  200. the House of God, it's gonna look in some places

  201. like it's been devastated. There are some pictures you're gonna

  202. hear about about the House of God where there's just

  203. been an abomination, and it may confuse you, but don't

  204. let it. It may overwhelm you, but don't let it.

  205. Let the reader understand. Then, let those who are in

  206. judeea flee to the mountains verse fifteen. Let no one

  207. on the housetop go down or enter the house to

  208. take anything out. Let no one in the field go

  209. back to get their cloak. How dreadful it will be

  210. in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers. Pray

  211. this will not take place in winter, because those will

  212. be days of distress, unequaled from the beginning when God

  213. created the world until now, and never to be equaled again.

  214. Verse twenty. If the Lord had not cut short those days,

  215. no one would survive. But for the sake of the

  216. elect whom he has chosen, he has shortened them. At

  217. that time. If anyone says to you, look here is

  218. the Messiah, or look there he is, do not believe it,

  219. for false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform

  220. signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.

  221. So be on your guard. I have told you everything

  222. ahead of time, But in those days following that distress.

  223. The sun will be dark and the moon will not

  224. give its light. The stars will fall from the sky,

  225. and the heavenly bodies will be shaken. At that time,

  226. people will see the Sun of Man coming in clouds

  227. with great power and glory, and he will send his

  228. angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from

  229. the ends of the earth to the ends of the heaven.

  230. Now learn this lesson from the fig tree. There is

  231. the second metaphor. Look at the fig tree and understand.

  232. As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves

  233. come out, you know that the summer is near. Even so,

  234. when you see these things happening, you know that it

  235. is near, right at the door. True, I tell you

  236. this generation will not pass away, certainly until all these

  237. things have happened. Heaven and earth will pass away, but

  238. my words will never pass away. But about the day

  239. and hour, no one knows, not even the angels in

  240. heaven nor the Son, but only the Father. Be on guard,

  241. be alert. You do not know when that time will come,

  242. what will happen. Now we're not gonna unpack every little

  243. detail of this, but I want to use those two

  244. metaphors that Jesus uses birth and then a fig tree.

  245. My youngest daughter just gave birth two weeks ago, so

  246. I've kind of walked through the whole thing. Yeah, it

  247. was really cool. She lives in Oregon. We were up there.

  248. God was really good through it. But I was watching

  249. and walking through her nine months of pregnancy, and she

  250. was and her husband was so looking forward with great expectation.

  251. And Jesus, you know all this stuff about the end times,

  252. it's like birth. It's scary on one hand, but you

  253. are looking forward with great expectation to this great life.

  254. And if you look at all these characteristics, there are

  255. some common traits through them. One thing we discover it's

  256. going to get worse before it gets better. Now, I

  257. have never been a pregnant mother, so I can only

  258. give this second hand, But most pregnant mothers I have

  259. met understand that when you are giving birth, it's going

  260. to get worse before it gets better. And he says listen.

  261. When he describes this, he does not say, listen, everything's

  262. gonna get really much better. Society is gonna improve, there's

  263. gonna be all these blessings. The world's gonna come together

  264. in unity and harmony. We're gonna be ecologically sound. And

  265. I say that to say society who doesn't know Christ

  266. is working hard to make us all better. Everybody agrees

  267. the world is broken. Everybody disagrees on how to fix it,

  268. and everybody has this idea we can fix it, and

  269. Jesus is saying, you can't fix it. You cannot fix

  270. this thing. So there's going to be this sense of

  271. it's going to get worse. Now. When you're a believer,

  272. you know that doesn't affect me. That doesn't shake my faith,

  273. that doesn't shake my firm foundation. If anything, I'm in

  274. a place, in a blessed life where I will help others.

  275. As we see this take place, and if you look

  276. at these traits, it says every aspect of existence is

  277. affected by it. Nature is affected by it. The New

  278. Testament says, the earth cries out because it longs for

  279. this salvation. Even the earth, the created earth, knows we're

  280. not functioning the way God designed us to function. Society

  281. is affected by it. There is disunity in families and

  282. in communities and in nations that's there spiritually, it is

  283. affected by it. There is this anti Christ's spirit that

  284. is against and there's defamation that takes place. Every aspect

  285. is affected by it. Nothing goes untouched with what transpires

  286. in the descriptions of Jesus, and he tells us this

  287. because he wants us to be aware. Do not think

  288. you can live in an isolated cocoon and not be

  289. affected by this. Don't be afraid of it, don't avoid it,

  290. but be aware of it. Like birth pains that are there,

  291. because you know on the other side of this is

  292. new life. Be aware of that process because there's a

  293. new Heaven and a new Earth that is coming. And

  294. as hard as giving baby birth, maybe you know there's

  295. something great that's coming. There is a gloriousness that coming.

  296. When we're standing there singing that worship song about how

  297. great is the Lord, I'm imagining around the throne of God,

  298. every tongue, every tribe, every nation, No more tears, no

  299. more sorrow, nothing I'm going. That's my position when I

  300. look at this, I can navigate this and my role

  301. through it, he says, be aware of this. There is

  302. work to be done. When there are birth pains, you

  303. do not just sit back. My daughter had to get

  304. to work, My son in law had to get to

  305. work next to her, and Jesus uses his metaphor to say,

  306. you are part of giving birth to something that no

  307. eye has ever seen, no ear has ever heard of,

  308. and you are gonna be a part of that. Are

  309. you prepared? The Gospel's got to preached everywhere, and there's

  310. this fulfillment that comes place, and you and I we

  311. are invited to be a part of it. We are

  312. not called to run off and hide somewhere. We are

  313. not called to stick our head in the sand and

  314. say I just don't want to think about it. We

  315. are not called to live lives of just today. But

  316. we are invited to be a part of God's process

  317. of bringing life permanently to this earth. This is the

  318. doorstep to life. Now, I'll tell you something. A lot

  319. all these characteristics, they've already happened. They happen in the

  320. time of Christ. They have happened for two thousand years.

  321. He doesn't actually much speak of anything that has really

  322. yet to happen. I've had the privilege of traveling all

  323. of this world, and I have traveled and worked with

  324. pastors and churches in countries that they have faced death

  325. because of their faith. We live in a country where

  326. we are well protected, and we have some freedoms that

  327. are there for us. But you go to some other

  328. countries and they have faced this, they understand this. And

  329. yet here's the amazing part. When I'm there, when I'm

  330. in you know, Afghanistan, when I'm in China, when I'm

  331. in even Iraq, when I'm in places where the church

  332. is so persecuted, you cannot even begin to imagine it.

  333. When I talk to Christians who have lost everything, their

  334. social security, their health, benefits, their job, everything because they

  335. refuse to reject Jesus. And this is happening today and

  336. I sit down with them, I have never met people

  337. with greater faith and greater joy and greater strength. And

  338. I'm thinking, wow, maybe as we look at this, our

  339. reaction shouldn't be this is horrible. How do we avoid it?

  340. But through this, God is gonna purify us, and He's

  341. gonna make us stronger, and we're gonna grow, and we're

  342. gonna have the faith that our brothers and sisters have.

  343. In a way, he says, this is what birth pains

  344. is about. But then he talks there's a fig tree,

  345. and he uses the fig tree to say, you may

  346. not know the days, but you can know the season,

  347. and you got to know the season and what the

  348. season is so you can be aware of that. And

  349. he says, pay attention to the spiritual seasons. What season

  350. gets your attention? The fig tree metaphor says, there's this

  351. identity that we carry. When he says this generation will

  352. not pass, he's not specifically just talking about those people

  353. in that time, because you're going, well, they all died,

  354. that was two thousand years ago. He's talking about the

  355. identity of a generation that says we are here for

  356. an eternity, the identity of a generation that will not

  357. fade away, but will have an identity and a voice

  358. to the world where we go, we don't belong here,

  359. you know, the church is like a homeless person because

  360. this is not our home. And there's a season that

  361. comes up where you go, we're getting closer and close

  362. to home, and there's an awareness of that, and these

  363. signs that become visible if you're watching for them, but

  364. you don't consumed with the signs. It just draws you

  365. closer and closer to Jesus and you go, Joel, what

  366. do I do with this information? I mean, what do

  367. I do with this I understand some of these characteristics,

  368. and they've been around, and I understand how I feel

  369. about that. Why would Jesus teach us? What do I do?

  370. And Jesus in this passage gives us really clear coaching.

  371. Here's what I want you to do with this information.

  372. Here's how I want you to be prepared with this information.

  373. And he gives four very specific directives to us that

  374. enable us to stand in a place of faith. First

  375. thing he says is, do not worry. You're going well,

  376. I don't know, flogged, I'm gonna would be a little worried.

  377. Do not worry. And he's precise, do not worry beforehand.

  378. Do not wait for the moment when you face a

  379. certain level of persecution in your workplace because of your faith.

  380. Prepare yourself beforehand so you will not worry about you

  381. got to start now saying I will not worry about

  382. some of the things that may be coming down the

  383. pipeline right now. I will not do that. I will

  384. not rely on knowing about it. I'm gonna rely on

  385. building faith. If there was ever a season where the

  386. Christian Church should stand up and say, now is it

  387. time for us to build our faith? So we will

  388. not worry because it seems like there's other powers than

  389. mine that are controlling this planet. So I've got to

  390. have this fress. I'm not gonna have stress. I'm not

  391. gonna have fear because otherwise I will avoid it. I've

  392. got to make sure I don't have the wrong focus.

  393. I'm not gonna worry. I have friends who are Republicans,

  394. and some of them, if their candidate loses the election, man,

  395. they're gonna ramp up the heat on the end times.

  396. And I have friends who are Democrats, and some of them,

  397. if their candidate loses the election, they're gonna ramp up

  398. the heat on the end times. And Jesus says, no,

  399. this is not how you approach this. This is not

  400. how you approach this. You do not worry. You have

  401. a position of faith that is there. And when you

  402. have that position of faith, then you can be aware.

  403. You don't have to close your eyes and be ignorant.

  404. You can see some of these characterists that you go.

  405. You know what, God's in control. I'm trusting him. He's

  406. in control of my life and he's in control of

  407. my eternal destiny. Jesus says this, Do not worry, do

  408. not allow fear to dictate how you see what is

  409. transpiring in the cosmic reality, because it will remove you

  410. from the invitation of Jesus saying, I want you to

  411. join me in bringing new life to this planet. Secondly,

  412. he says this, do not be alarmed, don't be surprised,

  413. don't be shocked. He says, these things must happen. He says,

  414. do not be alarmed by any of this. Don't let

  415. it shock you, do not let it blindside you. Do

  416. not live so much in the present that your Christianity

  417. and faith is defined by an easy, convenient life. God

  418. is a god of blessing. God knows your needs, God

  419. knows your issues, and God wants to meet your needs.

  420. There's no doubt about that. But as a Christian, Jesus said, clearly,

  421. you're gonna have hard times. That difficulty is going to

  422. be there. And if you define your faith simply by

  423. the ability of ease and convenience, then you're gonna be

  424. alarmed because sometimes things may happen. And he says, listen,

  425. don't be alarmed at all these things they have to happen.

  426. There's this great promise, ses you know what He's gonna

  427. come and he's gonna rescue us for that. But as

  428. you're beginning to see some of the stuff, it should

  429. not alarm you. He says. This third thing, be on

  430. your guard. He literally gives this directive. You must. It's

  431. a warning to the disciples. And the warning is this,

  432. if you're not on your guard, don't think it won't

  433. affect you. He literally said, at the beginning, people are

  434. gonna be deceived. So he says, be seriously on your guard.

  435. Do not let the enemy fool you into ignorance. Now,

  436. if you're like me, I'm not an End Times expert.

  437. I'm not an End Times theologian. I am aware of it.

  438. I've studied the scriptures in it, but I don't divest

  439. myself into being that kind of an expert. But at

  440. the same time, I'm not gonna be so removed from

  441. it then I'm gonna go. You know what, I'll just

  442. live over here. We are living in a season where

  443. God is actively moving towards where we've always wanted to

  444. go and we've always wanted to be. And Jesus says, listen,

  445. don't worry, don't be alarmed, but you've got to guard yourself. Now,

  446. what is it that you need to guard your heart

  447. and your mind. You have got to God guard your heart.

  448. I sometimes am surprised, and you know, you know me

  449. well enough, and you know my heart. I am surprised

  450. that Christians are getting so angry at this world. The

  451. world doesn't know Christ. They're in darkness. Why we should

  452. have an expectation that the world should live as Christians,

  453. and when they don't, we get angry. We got to

  454. guard our heart that we realize the Gospel has got

  455. to be preached to everybody. And we are here on

  456. the invitation of Jesus to bring his grace, his love,

  457. his truth, his compassion to people and to invite them

  458. into this. And if you don't guard your heart, and

  459. you see the temperature rising on discrimination, you see the

  460. temperature rising on difficulty, You see these temperatures rising. If

  461. your heart's not guarded, you will get bitter and angry,

  462. and then you remove yourself and all of a sudden

  463. you're nobody. He goes, Listen, guard your heart, but guard

  464. your mind as well. Think biblically about these things. Think

  465. christianly about these things, and do not let others distract you.

  466. Because there's in a flurry of chaos. There's always deception,

  467. and he says, listen, you gotta really know this stuff.

  468. Guard your heart and mind. Don't waste your energy on

  469. anything that is outside that center circle of who Jesus

  470. is and your life. In following him, I was pulling

  471. into a driveway of Starbucks, and the car in front

  472. of me was one he could pull in, but there

  473. was another route and another car was gonna pull in,

  474. and they're kind of jockeying for position, and one guy

  475. kind of pulls in and the other guy gets mad

  476. and he honks on his horn and he kind of

  477. puts in his nose of his car. So the other

  478. guy came, this is just a driveway to get a coffee.

  479. And then one guy rolls his window down and flips

  480. the guy off, and then the guy flips the guy off.

  481. Then none of the horns, and they're doing this for

  482. like ten minutes. I just wanted a coffee, and I'm

  483. looking at these people and I'm going, what wasted energy?

  484. They've just wasted so much energy over something as trivial

  485. as who gets in the Starbucks land First, where are

  486. you wasting your Christian energy? Where are you wasting it

  487. over stuff? That is so trivial, and you go, wait

  488. a minute, I am not gonna allow gossip to waste

  489. my energy anymore. I am not gonna allow what's happening

  490. in some other churches that doesn't look very good, to

  491. waste my energy anymore. My energy is going to be

  492. applied to being a part of what Jesus is doing

  493. and bringing a new heaven and a new Earth to

  494. this place. And he gives a fourth command. He says,

  495. stand firm, don't worry, don't be alarmed, be on your guard.

  496. It's like a birth, it's a season. And here's what

  497. this season looks like. And we see those traits, but

  498. stand firm because some of you may face some persecution.

  499. And as the church in America, wow, we need to

  500. take a position of humility, gang because we look at

  501. this and go nah. Every month, I think the number

  502. now is about five hundred six hundred Christians die are

  503. killed because of their faith. Churches are burned. Right now.

  504. There are thousands and thousands of Christians who are in prisons.

  505. What Jesus taught in our Rancho Cucamonga, we may not

  506. see it, but the Body of Christ is seeing it

  507. every day. I pray for one of the nations that

  508. has a persecuted church in it. And it has been

  509. such a good habit for me to recognize the season

  510. that we are in and to realize that when I

  511. stand firm, I may not be the guy going to jail,

  512. but I surely can pray for the guy who's being

  513. put into jail. I can pray for that pastor, I

  514. can pray for that Christian. Here's our application. I want

  515. to be a part of what God is doing. I

  516. may not fully understand it, and legitimately some of it

  517. may freak me out a little bit, but I don't

  518. want to miss how God's going to work through this.

  519. I don't want to be isolated from it. I don't

  520. want to be fearful of it. Jesus, here's what disciples,

  521. you got to know. It's birth pains, new life is coming.

  522. It's a fig tree. There is a season. Be aware

  523. of it. Read the signs, but don't worry, don't be alarmed.

  524. Be on your guarden. Stand firm. So tomorrow morning, when

  525. you wake up, you go Lord today, and you eagerly

  526. await the return of your savor. You say, Holy Spirit,

  527. help me today. On Thursday, September twelfth, to live out

  528. a teaching from Mark thirteen. I know how to live

  529. out Philippians four, but help me to live out a

  530. teaching from Mark thirteen. He gives this teaching to his

  531. followers because he says, you were not made for this world.

  532. The good news is there is another world that is coming.

  533. That's where we're going, That's where we want to go.

  534. Here's the journey to get there. Be ready for it,

  535. and know that through what looks like some difficult times,

  536. there will be amazing, glorious times. And wouldn't it be

  537. amazing to be a christ follower who wakes up and

  538. the circumstances of your world they don't shake you anymore.

  539. You may lose your job, it doesn't shake you anymore.

  540. You may be discriminated against, it doesn't upset you in

  541. that way anymore. To be able to know your identity

  542. as a Christian and not high from other people, to

  543. be able to stand and God, this is who I am.

  544. I am a Christian. And that takes place when your

  545. identity is rooted in eternity, not just in the present.

  546. And Jesus gives this teaching in Mark thirteen to say,

  547. root your identity there, and you root your identity there.

  548. You're gonna be just fine today, and you're gonna be

  549. just fine tomorrow. Would you buy your heads with me? Please?

  550. As a Christian, many of you have got to ask

  551. the Holy Spirit, Lord, what's my takeaway from this? What

  552. are you speaking to me about? But in an auditorioment

  553. like this, there are some of you who may not

  554. know where you stand with God. And the Bible is

  555. really clear something that we need to talk very honestly

  556. about just for a minute, and that is at that

  557. point in human history, when this world war in comes

  558. to that climax, there will be what the Bible says

  559. is that day of judgment. God will justifiably, perfectly and

  560. in a holy way judge, and God, in his love,

  561. knowing that that is coming, made away so that when

  562. he looks at you, he won't see you. He'll see Jesus.

  563. When the Son of God came to earth and died

  564. and resurrected, what he did was make a way so

  565. that the Father, when he looks at you, would see Jesus,

  566. and he would know that the price and the penalty

  567. of the judgment that you rightfully deserve has been paid.

  568. And that is a free gift of His grace. And tonight,

  569. if you are here and as you listen to my words,

  570. you feel that tugging in your heart that is not me,

  571. that is the spirit of God saying, this is a

  572. moment for you to give your life to Jesus. It's

  573. the great exchanged. He died for you so you could

  574. have life. But you give him your life, and he

  575. gives you his life. And at that day of judgment,

  576. which will be when God looks at you, he'll see

  577. Jesus and you will enter into an eternity with Him,

  578. with every head bowed and with every eye closed. Just

  579. in this one moment, I would consider it a privilege

  580. if you would let me pray for you. You'd say, Joel,

  581. right now, I don't know where I would stand at

  582. that moment of judgment. But with this one prayer, if

  583. you believe in your heart, if you confess with your mouth,

  584. then you will be saved. With this one prayer, you

  585. know for sure at that moment, at that time, God

  586. will see Jesus when he looks at you, you're forgiven,

  587. You're cleansed, you are born again, and you are free

  588. from the wrath of God. All I'm gonna ask you

  589. to do is one thing, just so I can make

  590. a contact with you before I lead us in prayer.

  591. Would you just lift your hand, you say, Joel, would

  592. you pray for me? I want to give my life

  593. to Christ. Thank you. Just lift your hand all over.

  594. Thank you. When it comes to the judgment, I want

  595. to be free of that. You are not lifting your

  596. hand to me. You are lifting your hand to the Lord,

  597. and you're saying, Jesus, I receive you as my Lord,

  598. as my savior. I receive you, and I give you

  599. my life, and I receive your life. And you know,

  600. whether it's ten years from now or one month from now,

  601. or whatever it is, at that day of judgment, you

  602. are free. Christians. We look forward to that future because

  603. we know we have the grace of God. Church altogether.

  604. Would you repeat this prayer after me, and let's join

  605. with those who lifted their hands. Can we all together

  606. just repeat this prayer to me, Dear Lord, I love you,

  607. Thank you for loving me. First confess that I am

  608. a sinner, that I have walked away from you, But

  609. today I come back to you. I receive you as

  610. my Lord and Savior. I give you my life and

  611. I receive your life. Thank you Jesus for saving me.

  612. Holy Spirit, fill me, teach me as I follow you. Jesus,

  613. I love you, and I look forward to an eternity

  614. with you. I pray this in the name of Christ. Lord.

  615. I thank you for each person who raised their hand,

  616. I pray you would protect them, but you would shield them.

  617. I pray immediately they would be surrounded by Christian brothers

  618. and sisters who would walk with them. And as a church, Lord,

  619. we thank you from Mark thirteen. We thank you Jesus

  620. that you had the wisdom and the foresight to teach

  621. us about the end times. May we be Christians who

  622. wake up every morning eagerly awaiting the return of our Lord.

  623. Instill in us a faith and a hope and a

  624. conviction that these are just birth pains for a new

  625. life that is coming. I pray, Holy Spirit, you would

  626. deposit in each person here that truth that takeaway tomorrow morning,

  627. as we live out our routine of our days, we

  628. would realize how significant Mark thirteen is for our faith today. Lord,

  629. continue to grow Patriochurch into this place, Lord God, this

  630. lighthouse of your gospel and your grace and your compassion.

  631. We praise you and we love you. We pray this

  632. in Christ's name. Amen and amen. God bless you all

  633. s
