  1. We're gonna dig into the Word of God today. I'm

  2. so honored that one of my friends, Mark Clark, is

  3. here with us, originally from Canada. So it's our first

  4. Canadian ever to preach in our pulpit.

  5. Okay, we got a Canadian, but he not Canadian anymore.

  6. He woke up one day and he was like, what

  7. am I doing here?

  8. And now he's in northern California at a church called

  9. Bayside Church, one of the most incredible churches in all

  10. of the United States and making a profound.

  11. Impact in northern California.

  12. They have a campus in Orange County, and Mark has

  13. become a great friend over the years. To me, he's

  14. one of the greatest teachers of our day. He's one

  15. of the greatest writers. He's an author, and he's so thoughtful.

  16. All he does is read and write. I mean, he

  17. just loves to think. He's a scholar and he's a

  18. lover of Jesus. And so we're so honored today that

  19. we're a church that leans in. So get ready because

  20. you are going to experience the power and a move

  21. of God delivered through this man of God.

  22. So would you do me a favor and give him a.

  23. Patreo, welcome by standing on your feet and maybe, oh

  24. it's for Pastor Mark Clark.

  25. Thank you, thank you, sir, thank you. Oh my goodness,

  26. thank you, thank you, thank you. Sit down, sit down,

  27. sit down. Oh my goodness, Oh my goodness, thank you.

  28. Adam.

  29. I I love this church.

  30. I love the leadership Adam Diego Pastor, Diego Pastor, Ashley pastor.

  31. This crew is amazing. This church is amazing.

  32. And when he's explaining me as a scholar, uh, yeah,

  33. that's that's not true.

  34. Uh. And and the minute you heard that, you're like,

  35. oh gosh, like, can we get out of here? Because

  36. I know what that's gonna be. Like, Hello, welcome to

  37. Patriot Church.

  38. Glad you're here. Uh.

  39. Ephesians Chapter one.

  40. I want to share two verses with you and uh

  41. and kind of weave in a bit of my story

  42. that I hope will actually encourage and help you in

  43. the midst of your life.

  44. I am Canadian. Is there is there any Canadians here? Okay? Great,

  45. thank you for welcoming me.

  46. It's perfect.

  47. Oh my gosh.

  48. All right, So grew up in Toronto and then moved

  49. across the Vancouver You guys have.

  50. No idea where any of these places are.

  51. I now, I am now in America, and I talk

  52. to people about geography, and they're.

  53. Like, in America, America, that's good.

  54. And then you start talking about anywhere else in the

  55. world and they draw a blank. So but but my story,

  56. I hope can connect to yours. And it's part of

  57. the Biblical story in a in an amazing way. The

  58. apostle Paul writes this letter called Ephesians. And as I've

  59. watched Pastor Adam preach, I notice how often he goes

  60. back to the well of the Book of Ephesians. Because

  61. it's such a beautiful book. It's a book that kind

  62. of founds every big idea in.

  63. Regard to Christianity.

  64. And uh, and I got some things that I wanted

  65. to to share with you to encourage you out of Ephesians.

  66. Chapter one, verse one says this Paul. He's he's kind

  67. of introducing himself to the church. And he says, Paul, Now,

  68. now stop right there. If you got a Bible underlying

  69. the word Paul, because some of you walking in here

  70. right now might be like, Okay, here's my problem that

  71. that this is exactly the kind of people God uses

  72. the apostle Paul. He's a great guy. He's a he's

  73. a he's learned. He wrote thirteen books of the New Testament.

  74. You know, those are the kinds of people that God uses.

  75. The choir boys, the good people, the righteous people, the

  76. people who memorize their Bibles, the people who have never

  77. watched rated R movies and they don't say these swear words.

  78. And they don't and they're good people and and and

  79. the problem with that is is is you know that's

  80. not you. And part of your problem is you come

  81. in here and you see all these people on stage

  82. and they're they're righteous, and they're holy, and they're put together,

  83. and some of you see this is this is the problem.

  84. God uses good people and he can never use someone

  85. like me. And that's the narrative that goes in your

  86. brain that God could never use you. God could never

  87. bless you. God can never take you to change the world.

  88. And I am here to say to you that that's

  89. not true. That listen, I am the poster boy for

  90. God could never use me.

  91. All Right.

  92. I grew up the.

  93. First time I ever walked into a church, I was

  94. nineteen years old. And the only reason I stayed was

  95. because there was pretty girls there. Can I get an

  96. amen from the youth section or whatever?

  97. So I never walked into a.

  98. Church before because here's what in my mind, here's what

  99. the church was gonna be.

  100. It was everyone was gonna be average, two hundred years old.

  101. It was gonna be orange, shaggy carpet and smell like mothballs.

  102. And I was like, I don't want anything to do

  103. with the church.

  104. I grew up in an atheistic, agnostic, secular setting, no Bible,

  105. no prayer, no church, no nothing. My dad was such

  106. an atheist that when my mom proposed to him that

  107. they call my brother Matthew, all right, she wanted to.

  108. She said, Hey, I want to name my.

  109. First kid Matthew, and my dad said absolutely not because

  110. that name is in the Bible, right. And then four

  111. years later they had me and named me Mark. So

  112. clearly this guy had never picked up a Bible before

  113. in his life. My middle name is Andrew and my

  114. brother's middle name is James. We got four disciples knocked

  115. off and this guy is clueless. So I Uh So,

  116. when I was about eight or nine years old, uh,

  117. my parents got divorced and the tragedy of that the

  118. trauma of it. For me, for those of you are

  119. who are kids of divorced it actually when my when

  120. my parents sat me down and said, hey, listen, we're getting.

  121. Divorced and my dad left.

  122. The trauma of that gave me a mental illness called

  123. Turet syndrome. Now, I don't know if you guys know

  124. what Turet syndrome is, but it's the reason I'm like,

  125. I'm up here and you'll see me. I twitched my

  126. face around and my body twitches around. You're like, what's

  127. wrong with this guy? Touret's syndrome is what's wrong with me?

  128. When I was eight years old, the trauma of that

  129. moment gave me trusted. No, here's the Turets. For those

  130. of you who don't know about Turets, it's it's a

  131. way not to be cool in high school, all right.

  132. So so what happens is is you you do all

  133. these random habits, and you you do ticks and and

  134. things that you have to do because you're you're and

  135. and one of the things that if you watch someone

  136. in taretess on YouTube, they swear a lot, right, And.

  137. That's what was me I'd be I was like twelve

  138. years old to be.

  139. Sitting at a bus stop and I'd just be swearing

  140. at people randomly. Af af like not the letter like

  141. the word af Red, I mean as you af right,

  142. I mean ran Ran, I mean.

  143. Right now here here.

  144. Here's the one job you're never gonna get in life

  145. when you randomly throw f bombs around at people a preacher.

  146. Right, it's not gonna work.

  147. But how many of us in this room know that

  148. God uses you not because of you, but in spite

  149. of you, because it's not the last job ever for

  150. a kid like that is gonna be what I'm doing

  151. in front of you today. Right, Well, I've been to

  152. Patria church, af got in a small group. What that

  153. doesn't work. I can't be swearing at people. But God

  154. took me and all my weirdness and all my brokenness,

  155. and he decided to use me to preach and be

  156. on a stage for a living. Why because it makes

  157. you feel good about yourself and.

  158. That's a good thing.

  159. Because I remember God, when I was nineteen or twenty

  160. years old, I was gonna go to the film industry,

  161. That's what I wanted to do with my life. And

  162. God brought a group of people around me and they said, no,

  163. that's not what you're gonna do. You're gonna go and

  164. be a pastor. You're gonna be a preacher. And I

  165. was like, no, I don't want to be a pastor

  166. because here's the thing. Would you agree with me? People

  167. are the worst, right like you all, I'm not a

  168. good pastor.

  169. Man. My church knows this. I'm not like Pastor Adam.

  170. He he loves you, all right, He he cares about

  171. you because.

  172. He's a pastor. He left, he's he's Oh I talked

  173. to him.

  174. Every person I saw him with is like he knows

  175. your name and he knows your.

  176. Story and all. This person's greatest person.

  177. I meet people in the lobby of my church, I'm like,

  178. hellow like Hi, I'm David.

  179. I'm like Hi, David Billy all right.

  180. I'm just like I don't I'm not gonna need this

  181. information in about eight minutes, all right. And so and so,

  182. when people came around me and they're like, here's what

  183. you need to do.

  184. You need to go plant a church.

  185. You know what, you gonna be a pastor, I was like

  186. the last thing I want to do in my life

  187. is to be a pastor.

  188. Because people complain all the time.

  189. And then oh the worship was too loud, Eh start.

  190. A singles ministry for me, It's like, figure your own

  191. life out. Why you can't find a person in this crowd?

  192. Good lucks like fish in a barrel. You don't need

  193. a ministry for that.

  194. So I was like, I was like, man, I don't

  195. I don't know. I don't know if I'm going to

  196. be good at this job. And you can see why.

  197. And so, but a weird thing happened, not only so

  198. my dad. My dad passed away when I was fifteen

  199. years old, and it caused me to ask a lot

  200. of big questions about origin, meaning morality, destiny, where am

  201. I going in life? And it caused me to come

  202. to know Jesus. When I was eighteen years old, a

  203. guy came and shared Christ with me, and I got

  204. into the.

  205. Pastor and I didn't know what I was doing.

  206. And then I moved to Vancouver because I wanted to

  207. go into the academic realm because again, people are the worst.

  208. So footnotes though, I like footnotes because they don't talk

  209. back to you and make dumb decisions with their life

  210. and cheat on their wives. And so I was like

  211. footnotes is what I want. And then God said, not

  212. only do I want you to be a pastor, I

  213. want you to plant a church. I want you to

  214. start a church with sixteen people in your house.

  215. Now we're talking about Vancouver, Canada, right, we're talking.

  216. About progressive posts Christian Like. They say that Canada is

  217. probably a generation or two ahead of America in regard

  218. to secularization.

  219. Right, so I like to say when I'm.

  220. Speaking in front of Americans, I come to you from

  221. the future, right, I come to you from where your

  222. country is going in regard to atheism, secularism, post Christian thought.

  223. And here I am.

  224. And God says, I want you to plant a church

  225. in Vancouver, Canada.

  226. I'm like, I don't want to do that, man.

  227. Because nobody likes Jesus here, nobody cares. This is this

  228. is the West coast man, this is all like there

  229. are They already think they're saved because they wear Lululemon

  230. pants and carry a water bottle and eat kale And

  231. they're like, oh, I'm I'm connected, And I gotta get

  232. up every week and tell these people, no, no, no, you're.

  233. Not actually saved.

  234. Because here's the thing going inside of yourself, finding yourself.

  235. The New Age Gospel is not what saves you. You

  236. need to come to the end of yourself. And here's

  237. the thing, the one commons and I'm in all the

  238. problems of your life is you. And you show up

  239. here and you think you can find salvation in you.

  240. You are a disaster, you are a wreck.

  241. You are sinful, pitiable, par blind and naked.

  242. But Jesus isn't. Jesus Christ.

  243. Died on a cross, rose again for your salvation. Stop

  244. trusting in yourself. And everyone said that will never work

  245. because in Canada, no one wants to hear that they're sinful.

  246. No one wants to hear that they need to give

  247. their life to Jesus. They think they're already all right.

  248. And so I just started doing that every single week,

  249. a kid in his running shoes and a hoodie yelling

  250. at everybody about how they're a disaster but Jesus needs

  251. to be the hero of their life. And people start

  252. to meet Jesus and this thing started to happen. We're

  253. over time. God saved literally thousands of people all across

  254. Canada because I was willing to say send me, I

  255. was willing to go I know I'm not going to

  256. be good at this, but maybe through me, God, you

  257. could do a thing. And here's the crazy thing about

  258. what God does. How many of us know? Where was

  259. the Apostle Paul when he wrote the Book of Ephesians him? Well, no,

  260. he was in prison. So I had never heard of

  261. fulsome prison before. I mean i'd heard it through the

  262. Johnny Cash song when I was a Canadian. But when

  263. I moved to Sacramento, I realized I lived twenty minutes

  264. from fullsome prison. And in fact, we as a church

  265. have a campus in fullsome prison where every single Sunday

  266. I look at a camera and I say hello and

  267. preach to our fullsome prison campus and it's three hundred

  268. guys in jumpsuits sitting in the service, love in Jesus,

  269. worship in Jesus.

  270. Go and I and so.

  271. I remember our team came to us and they said, hey, man,

  272. we want to do we want to do a day

  273. in fulsome prison. I was like, yeah, it's a really

  274. good idea. Let's let's, you know, shoot some video and

  275. projected in there. They're like, no, no, no, man, we're

  276. talking about you going. I'm like, what why would I

  277. what do you talk? I don't know, Like I wouldn't

  278. do well in prison. I'm just saying. So I was like, ah,

  279. I don't know. They're like, no, we're going in, man,

  280. we're going in. We're gonna do a whole conference. You're

  281. gonna preach there. I'm like, oh, okay. So we show

  282. up that day. We're standing outside the prison and it's

  283. literally like just like the movies, like big stone walls,

  284. huge gates, and they're like, okay, we're gonna go in.

  285. And then literally, no joke, all the alarms start to

  286. go off.

  287. Meet me, Meet me real.

  288. I'm like, what is going on? And they're like, sorry,

  289. there was a shanking in the prison. I'm like, all right,

  290. well we gave it a shot. We'll see you later,

  291. you know.

  292. And everyone's like no, no, no, it's it's just a

  293. ten minute delay. Ten minute delay. What are you talking about?

  294. This is over and they're like no, man. So we

  295. walk in.

  296. The big gates open, we walk in and I see

  297. the guy on the gurney. Literally he's on the gurney

  298. like shaking. I'm like, what the and we going? And

  299. I thought I thought we have like our own little

  300. like tunnel or whatever, we've kind of pop up in

  301. the chapel and there'd be some like some plexi glass

  302. or something.

  303. Uh.

  304. Yeah, it wasn't like that, man.

  305. I I went I went in and there was a

  306. whole bunch of inmates and I'm walking right with them

  307. and they're like, mercy, it's just like the movies.

  308. They're all tattered up and they're like, what's up? And

  309. I'm like, we'll sup right, and I.

  310. And I got I got into the chapel and this

  311. guy no joke, makes a beeline for me all right

  312. and then tie it up guy to shoot.

  313. He just walks right up to me and I'm like,

  314. oh no, and he runs.

  315. Up and he gives me the biggest hug and he goes,

  316. how are Aaron and the kids?

  317. And I'm like, you know my family? How how long

  318. are you in?

  319. For?

  320. Like a while? Right right?

  321. He said, you're an.

  322. Uh.

  323. Because this guy listens to me preach every week. He

  324. knows my whole life. And all the prisoners started walking

  325. up to me. They going, he's smaller in real life,

  326. look at him bah And they're laughing at me, and

  327. I start and I'm like, Lord, what do I preach

  328. to these men? And God said, here's what I want

  329. you to do. I want you to preach the Prodigal

  330. Sun's story.

  331. And so I got up.

  332. I started preaching Luke fifteen to these guys. And I

  333. looked at them and I said, how many of you

  334. in this room had to father that abandoned you?

  335. How many of you in this room how to father

  336. who drank.

  337. Too much and hit on their beat their mom or

  338. their sister and abandon How.

  339. Many of you? And all three hundred hands went up,

  340. and I said, listen to me.

  341. In Christianity, you get a father who will never leave you.

  342. In Christianity, you get a father.

  343. Who will never drink too much, who will never beat

  344. on your mom.

  345. All he does is run out to you.

  346. The minute you repent, he runs out and embraces you

  347. and puts his own robe on you.

  348. It's a beautiful thing.

  349. And they're crying, and I'm watching these men and I'm

  350. thinking to myself, See, these are the kinds of people.

  351. God uses the people that he's not supposed to use

  352. the people. Some of you walked in here and you're like,

  353. God could never use me.

  354. And to tell you he can use any of you, no.

  355. Matter your past, no matter how you view yourself, he

  356. views you different. Now listen, Paul says this, Paul an

  357. apostle of who Christ Jesus.

  358. Here's the apostle.

  359. Paul wants you to know right off the bat that

  360. your life is not about you.

  361. It's about Jesus.

  362. He's the only one that can save you. He's the

  363. only one who can redeem you. He's the only one

  364. who can transform you. He's the only one who can

  365. carry you. Money will disappear, your marriage will crumble, your

  366. health one day, every single person in here is gonna

  367. get a diagnosis and die. But Jesus Christ is eternal,

  368. and no matter what this world does to you, he

  369. holds you. He is the ultimate treasure. Now, this is

  370. the problem. Some of you who grew up in church.

  371. You think that the Bible, this is what the apostle Paul.

  372. Is trying to do.

  373. Verse one. I'm trying to tell you the Bible is

  374. because there's only two ways.

  375. You can read the Bible. Either the Bible is about

  376. you or it's about him. Now, some of you who

  377. grew up in the church, the problem is you read

  378. the Bible is if it's about you.

  379. So you do your DeVos in the morning, and you

  380. you know, you got.

  381. Your cup of coffee and you've already taken your selfie hashtag, hashtag,

  382. Jesus hashtag devo hashtag. And the problem is is you

  383. go to work and when you read your Devo that morning,

  384. you read a story about Jesus and he just hanging.

  385. Out with some prostitutes and some sinners. And you, when you.

  386. Read that story, who were you in that story? When

  387. you read it, you were Jesus.

  388. Every time? What would Jesus do?

  389. And you go, you know, I'm going to minister to

  390. the prostitutes at work. I mean not the real ones,

  391. but the emotional you know, I got all these spirit Joe.

  392. You know, listen, if you read the Bible that way,

  393. it will crush you because here's the thing. You are

  394. not Jesus in that story. You are the prostitute. You

  395. are the person who every single day you cheat on

  396. Jesus and yet he shows you his grace.

  397. That's how you read the Bible.

  398. And if you read the Bible like that, it sets

  399. you free because you can try your whole life.

  400. I gotta be like Jesus. I gotta slay the giants

  401. of my life. No, no, no, you're not Jesus. You're

  402. not David in that story.

  403. You're the Israelites who are hiding up in the bushes

  404. hoping that a representative Israelite would go down and slay

  405. the giant of Satan, sin and death and then impute

  406. it to you even though you did nothing, because you're

  407. the only thing you bring to salvation is the sin

  408. that necessitated it. See, Jesus needs to be the hero

  409. of your life. Jesus needs to be the one that

  410. you look to and go okay.

  411. Uh So here's the power.

  412. When you make your life about Jesus, he changes everything.

  413. I remember when we started our church in Canada, everyone said, well, Mark, uh,

  414. here's the only thing that's gonna work in Canada. You

  415. got to preach these like topical sermons and you've got

  416. to be able to entertain people.

  417. People are gonna come in.

  418. You're gonna, you know, ride around on a unicycle and

  419. juggle and come to my church and hopefully entertain everybody.

  420. And I was like, that sounds awful. What's my other option?

  421. And they're like, well, you could preach the Bible, but

  422. that's gonna be lame. No one in Canada no one

  423. in Canada wants to hear you just preach the Bible.

  424. I'm like, okay, that one. So I started when I

  425. started our church. We're in this little elementary school gym,

  426. and I would just get up and I would start

  427. preaching through books of the Bible, verse by verse, like literally,

  428. we spent three and a half years in the Gospel

  429. of Matthew when we started our church, three and a

  430. half years right like like even in this sermon right now,

  431. I'm on Paul.

  432. An Apostle of Christ. Jesus.

  433. That's it.

  434. That's where we're at, right.

  435. And so I would just tell them every week, you

  436. need to give your life to Jesus.

  437. We preach through Bible verses. And here's what happened. People

  438. started to meet Jesus. People started to.

  439. Get their addictions healed, their marriages healed. And that started

  440. to grow, and sixteen.

  441. People became fifty, became three hundred. And I remember when.

  442. We were three hundred people meeting in this little elementary

  443. school gym and this I said, we're gonna have to

  444. go to two services and the ooh, and.

  445. This woman walked off to us.

  446. She said, I can't go, We can't go to two services.

  447. That's gonna be the nail in our coffin. I'm like, why,

  448. and she said, because I come to.

  449. Church for community, and now I'm not gonna know where

  450. Joanne is and we gotta go for lunch after and

  451. now which and so I So I got up the

  452. next weekend and I preached a sermon. I said, listen,

  453. I didn't start at church so you could get more friends.

  454. I started at church because every single day, people like

  455. my father die and go to Hell. And so next

  456. week we're going to two services. And if you don't

  457. want to, I don't really care what you're gonna do

  458. with your life. I probably won't remember your name anyway,

  459. So just we're just gonna do it. And that next

  460. weekend we went to two services and the church grew

  461. by fifty people in a week. Well she left, so

  462. forty nine people in a week, and I'm like, what

  463. what just happened? And what started to happen is Jesus

  464. to save people. And the church started to grow and

  465. grow and grow because when God shows up to do something, listen,

  466. there's nothing you can do to stop.

  467. At y'all, there was.

  468. There was a weekend when when my staff looked at

  469. me and they said, Mark, I like it was one

  470. of these weekends where I just didn't feel like going

  471. out and preaching. Right, I'm pastor Adam, pastor Diego. They've

  472. never had this but I but I remember I was

  473. like sitting backstage and I'm like, i don't want to

  474. go out and preach. I'm not even in the mood

  475. because I'm gonna go out there and I'm gonna look

  476. out at this crowd. I'm gonna see the same guy

  477. whos been sitting in the same seat for four years,

  478. never brought a friend, and he gives nothing. You gonna

  479. go out there and give him my whole energy to

  480. this guy, He's gonna sit there and rate my little

  481. sermon out of ten and move on with his life.

  482. And I'm just sick of this. I don't feel like it.

  483. And my Staf's like, go go go. So I walked

  484. out out and I preached like a what preachers are

  485. probably called it a Jonah sermon, you know Jonah. He

  486. didn't want them Innavites to repent, right, so he just

  487. preached the world like I just went out and liked,

  488. God hates you.

  489. Figure it out.

  490. I don't know.

  491. And no joke. On Monday morning, my admin sat me down.

  492. She said, I don't know what you said on the weekend,

  493. but more people came to know Jesus this weekend than.

  494. We've ever had. In fact, we had to.

  495. Start training the ushers in how to lead people to

  496. Christ because people were walking up to them and going,

  497. hey whatever. He just said, I want Jesus, and they're

  498. like bucket because that's all we trained them to do. Man,

  499. there's a hand out the buckets, and what started to happen.

  500. Was something that was not scheduled.

  501. Jesus started to show up and save people and we

  502. couldn't even keep up with it. That's what happens when

  503. the spirit of God starts to blow. It's everything in

  504. your power. And that's why Paul's going, I want you

  505. to focus on Jesus Christ as the hero of your life,

  506. is the one that you've given your life to, as

  507. the one you believed in, as the one that you treasure.

  508. And some of you are bored with Jesus. You're like,

  509. I don't know about Jesus. Aw, he's kind of like

  510. this a victim guy who walked around in sandals. No, no, no,

  511. that's who he was two thousand years ago for thirty

  512. three years, it's not who he is now. You know

  513. who he is now, the reigning, ruling king of kings,

  514. Lord of lords, who's coming back. I remember this, this

  515. mentor of mine of Vancouver. But a seventy five year

  516. old preacher, he sat a group of us preachers down.

  517. He looked at us, he said, let me ask you

  518. a question. If you showed up to church on Sunday

  519. and not one person came to the church, all right,

  520. just they just didn't show up. What would you do?

  521. And every guys I don't know, go home. And he's like, no,

  522. here's what you do. You still preach the sermon because

  523. there are principalities and powers that need to be reminded

  524. who's in charge, that there has been a victory, that

  525. Jesus Christ has defeated them and is reigning and ruling

  526. now and coming back for his people. And some of you,

  527. he have no vision for your life. Paul right off

  528. the back says, let me give you one. It's Jesus.

  529. And then he says this by the will of God,

  530. to God's holy people in Ephesus, the faithful in Christ, Jesus.

  531. And then He says, this word ready for this. What's

  532. this word?

  533. Grace?

  534. That is the word for all of us who don't

  535. feel like we're worthy, all of us who have a

  536. past where we've been, where we have messed up and

  537. sinned and made mistakes or had a whole bunch of

  538. mistakes made against us.

  539. Paul leads this book, but go, I need you, guys

  540. to grasp grace. You.

  541. Race means undeserved favor, und favorite. That means no matter

  542. what mess you make, no matter how much you fumbled

  543. your life, no matter the mistakes you mad.

  544. Do you know the.

  545. Amount of mistakes that I've made in ministry? And somehow

  546. God still has me doing this.

  547. I don't understand. How listen, have you guys ever heard

  548. of Saddleback Church before?

  549. Right?

  550. So? So sadle Bac Church, you know, sat.

  551. About the Changed Church of Evangelical America, one of the greatest,

  552. biggest churches every I used to read all the books

  553. and I was the church player, all the purpose driven

  554. and the baseball diamonds and all this crit and I'm like, Okay.

  555. I get a phone call six months ago from the

  556. pastor there. He says, I want you.

  557. To come and preach and I'm like, what preach on

  558. saddleback church? Oh my gosh, that's like the super Bowl

  559. of preaching. I get to preach at.

  560. Saddle back, and so I prep this sermon.

  561. It's all perfect, every illustration, every phrase. I'm gonna pay

  562. myself saddle back. I'm gonna make sure it's legit. So

  563. I get up and preach at saddle back. And they

  564. signed this text, and I was talking about, Hey, the apostle,

  565. Paul was a guy. He murdered people. And then I said,

  566. how many of you have murdered somebody before? Of course,

  567. first service goes, all's well right, Second service goes alls, well,

  568. how many How do you murdered somebody before? You know,

  569. God can use You're already ahead of Paul.

  570. Third service goes I.

  571. Said, how many murdered somebody before? And I look over

  572. to them my left side, and I see a hand

  573. go up and look. I'm like, okay, ah, thank you.

  574. For your honesty. Okay, And it was the sign language.

  575. Lady, Shoot, shoot, how many of you murdered?

  576. Wow?

  577. How many of us know that God redeems stupid?

  578. I am not getting invited back there. So when I

  579. was a young when I was a young pastor. I

  580. told a woman that her husband was dead, and I

  581. had the wrong guy.

  582. Yeah, her husband was fine.

  583. I had gone and visited him in the hospital. And

  584. then I went in on a Monday and I walked

  585. in the room, same room, same hospital, and the guy

  586. was there and he wasn't looking good, and I was

  587. I went to step around. The nurse said, excuse me,

  588. what are you doing here? And I said, oh, I'm

  589. here for a pastoral visit and she said, oh, I'm sorry,

  590. he passed away this morning. Now, if you're taking notes

  591. on how to be a good pastor, when someone says

  592. someone passed away.

  593. Say who.

  594. But I just said, okay, sounds good. And I went

  595. back to the office. I told the secretary, and two

  596. hours later, his wife came by the church to drop

  597. something off and was holding a subway sandwich and said,

  598. I'm on my way to go visit him.

  599. And the secretary came back. I said, I don't think

  600. she knows he's dead.

  601. I said, send her back, and she came back and

  602. I said, I'm really sorry.

  603. I said, where are you going. She's going to going

  604. to visit David. I said, oh, David died. David's dead.

  605. He died this morning. She's like, how is that possible?

  606. I was there singing with him this morning. I said,

  607. all these things happened pretty quick these days. He says, downhill,

  608. hees never know, you never know. At which point I'm

  609. not kidding. She passed out into my.

  610. Arms and we mourned the death of David for an

  611. hour and a half until I walked out and realized

  612. that I'd had the wrong hospital. And so the secretary

  613. called and David was fine. He's waiting for his lunch,

  614. and I'm like, shoot, So I had to walk back

  615. into the room. I hey, man, remember that thing we're

  616. talking about it.

  617. Now, let me be honest with you.

  618. Worst day of my life, and I'm gonna be honest

  619. with you. Satan used that in my life to destroy

  620. me because he said, you weren't good enough to do

  621. this job. You're dressing up. You're not a real pastor.

  622. You don't even know what you're doing. You're pretending. You're

  623. dressing up like some man that you think, and you

  624. are not good enough.

  625. You should not plant this church.

  626. It was six months before planting the church, and I

  627. need people to come around me and look at me

  628. and say no, no, no. Do you know what the

  629. Father said to Jesus when he was being baptized, You

  630. are my beloved son and whom I am well pleased.

  631. And he hadn't even done anything yet. You think that

  632. you're gonna plant this church and reach people for Jesus

  633. because you're perfect.

  634. No, it's because he is perfect.

  635. He's gonna use you, and you're gonna fumble it and

  636. you're gonna make mistakes for the rest of your life.

  637. But that's what grace is.

  638. Have you ever thought about people in the Bible. I

  639. saw this thing online the other day about people in

  640. the Bible that we look up to, all.

  641. These great saints, but if you ever.

  642. Looked at their life, think about how you would connect

  643. with this. Noah got drunk? How many of us, I'm

  644. just kidding, don't do that.

  645. How many of us can can connect with Noah? Right?

  646. Noah got drunk? Abraham was too old? How many of

  647. you feel too old?

  648. Right?

  649. Isaac was a day dreamer. Jacob lied. Leah was ugly.

  650. In Genesis, it says Leah is weak about the eyes.

  651. That's the Hebrewph.

  652. Joseph was abused, Moses was a murderer, Gideon was afraid.

  653. Rayhab was a prostitute. Jeremiah was too young, David was

  654. an adulterer, Elijah was suicidal, Isaiah preached naked, Jonah ran

  655. from God, Naomi was a widow, Job went bankrupt.

  656. John the Baptist ate bugs.

  657. Peter denied Christ, the disciples fell asleep while praying.

  658. Martha worried about.

  659. Everything, the Samaritan woman was divorced, Zachias was too small,

  660. Paul was a murderer, Timothy had an aucer, and Lazarus

  661. was dead.

  662. So if you are alive, you got one up on him,

  663. and you are here.

  664. And how many of you need to know this church

  665. is not a country club. It is a hospital for

  666. broken sinners who need grace. And it says this grace

  667. and peace to you from God, our Father, underlying the

  668. word Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Listen, So many

  669. of you need to be told right now. He's a

  670. good father. And what that means for those of us

  671. who didn't have good fathers, here's what that means. It

  672. means no matter who you are, what you've done, no

  673. matter what your past is, he wants to hunt you down,

  674. run after you. And he's great because he's the first

  675. mover man. He doesn't even have to you don't. He

  676. does stuff that we don't even we don't even know about.

  677. I mean, think back to your life. What has you

  678. sitting in this seat right now? What person came into

  679. your life? What family member did God give you?

  680. What thing? I remember a couple.

  681. Of years ago, my wife and I were speaking up

  682. in a marriage retreat. And as we were driving up

  683. to the marriage retreat to teach about marriage for two days,

  684. we got in a fight, which tends to happen, and

  685. so I remember she looked at me and she said,

  686. what are we going to teach at the marriage a treatment?

  687. And I said, well, let me do some teaching and

  688. you can chime in. Now in my head that sounded

  689. really good, but the minute I said it, I was

  690. like ass master, and she's like, oh, you just want

  691. me to chime in? And then she went dead silent

  692. on me.

  693. All right. I don't know, guys, if you've ever had this,

  694. your woman just goes quiet. And she just started looking out.

  695. The window, and I realized it was gonna be a

  696. two hour quiet drive with my wife. Because here's what

  697. happens when you speak at a marriage conference. Your marriage sucks,

  698. and so she's giving me the silent treatment, and I'm

  699. asking her questions, Hey, honey, how'd it go this week?

  700. She's not falling for any of it. And so I

  701. just did what I hadn't done in ten years in

  702. my life. I turned on the radio, like old school radio,

  703. not like the you know. I chose a song on

  704. Spotify and put it in. I just the old school radio.

  705. Boomed lasers just come from space and go into the

  706. antenna on the front of the chuck And we're driving

  707. and I turn on the radio and I'm not kidding you.

  708. The song that is playing on the radio is the

  709. song that we danced to on our wedding night, the

  710. first song out of the gate. Baby, You're all that

  711. I want.

  712. When I'm lying here in your arms, finding it hard

  713. to believe we're in heaven right, And I'm like, and

  714. I'm like, oh my gosh, listen.

  715. If you're here and you're an atheist and you don't

  716. believe in God, come on, man, what.

  717. Are the chances out of the five hundred million songs

  718. that exist on planet Earth that the one I.

  719. Needed right there, right then came through that radio And

  720. the Father, the Father is so good. He's just come on, kid,

  721. come on.

  722. I love each other. I need you guys to pull

  723. this together. He's here and I'm like, I'm sorry, baby.

  724. I remember, I'm sorry baby, And I just put my

  725. arm and I see her arm come out at the

  726. corner of my eye come out and go oh it

  727. shuts off the radio. This woman's heart is cold. But

  728. here's why I tell you that, and then I'll pray

  729. for you. You see, the Father is so good. He's doing

  730. things in your life. And the question is you can

  731. be one or two people.

  732. You can be.

  733. Someone like my wife who just shuts it off, doesn't

  734. want to hear it, you little space, really like what's

  735. going on.

  736. Or you could be someone who goes melt my heart.

  737. Father.

  738. The things you've done, the people you've put in my life,

  739. every decision that has me sitting here in this chair

  740. right now at this beautiful church is all but the

  741. grace of God on my life.

  742. You are a good father.

  743. So Father in heaven, I do pray that you would

  744. melt our hearts. I do pray that we would be

  745. people who stand on grace and not our performance for you,

  746. but Jesus performance on our behalf in front of you,

  747. that we would fully trust in and treasure his life,

  748. his sacrifice, and his resurrection unto your glory and the

  749. good of people.

  750. In Jesus Great name. We pray Amen, Amen, and then.

  751. Hears God, let's stay at our feet because right now

  752. we're all leave here together, but we got.

  753. Plenty of time. I think it's only.

  754. A appropriate that in spite of us, God uses us,

  755. God chooses us, and so this is a moment where

  756. we could.

  757. Go to God in worship.

  758. We talked about last week that when the spirit moves

  759. and when the spirit speaks to you, the Apostle Paul

  760. encourages us to begin to sing spiritual songs and hymns

  761. because the Holy Spirit will solidify what he's already been doing.

  762. And so in this moment I encourage you as we're

  763. gonna do some songs together. Let this be a moment

  764. of deep reflection but also deep worship to say, God,

  765. I can connect with any of those people in the Bible,

  766. and in spite of me, God can use me, God

  767. can choose me. And in spite of me, if I'm

  768. obedient to trust God to open my mouth, then God,

  769. you will do the rest. So as we open our

  770. mouths today to give God all the glory, all the

  771. honor that he deserves. Let us worship God with our

  772. whole hearts. And if you don't know Jesus today, or

  773. you've been far from Jesus, use this moment of worship

  774. to run back to the Father's arms.

  775. The prodigal son. Run back to Jesus today.

  776. No matter how far you've been, God is not far

  777. from me, and God is not far from you. As

  778. you take one step forward, God runs towards you. So

  779. let us worship this morning and give God glory.

  780. God.

  781. Right now, we come before you Lord to worship you today. Father,

  782. God is the Spirit is here, and your presence is here.

  783. May we begin to lay all of our burdens.

  784. At the foot of Jesus today.

  785. God, I thank you Lord, And you've not expected perfection

  786. from us. Lord, but you are looking for willing vessels

  787. to be full of your grace. So fill us right now, Spirit, come,

  788. we welcome you here.

  789. To speak to us today.

  790. Jesus name us worships Oh.

  791. Andy, not hear thousand stories world, thank thank God.

  929. your own sin, your own shortcomings, and you're ready to

  930. stop running from God, and you're ready today to give.

  931. Your life to Jesus.

  932. You had a man earlier he set himself on fire

  933. so that we could watch him burn because of his

  934. love for Jesus.

  935. Have you say that?

  936. And you're in here and you feel you are far

  937. from God, and you're ready to give your life to

  938. Jesus Christ, you're ready to stop running, and you're desperate

  939. for the Father's love.

  940. You say, I.

  941. Recognize my sin, I recognize my short comes.

  942. I've never given my life to Jesus, or maybe I

  943. have at one time, but as I look in my life,

  944. my life does not reflect that of a believer.

  945. And I'm ready to go all in.

  946. Then I just encourage you right now that if you're

  947. ready to go all in, you're ready to stop running,

  948. you're ready to give your life to Jesus Christ, then

  949. just be bold right now and just lift your hand

  950. up right now. If that's you and you're in this place,

  951. I see hand's going up all over over here.

  952. It's ready.

  953. You're ready to go.

  954. You're ready to give your life to Christ, ready to

  955. recognize your sin, Jesus, I'm all in. Keep your hand up, Christ,

  956. God see hands all over. Can we say this together

  957. as a family. We're gonna say a prayer. The prayer

  958. is not the thing that saves you. Holy Spirit's already

  959. at work. But we're gonna affirm the work of Jesus

  960. right now. So would you all join me right now,

  961. no matter where you're at, courtyard online, in this room,

  962. would you say this with me right now, Dear Lord Jesus,

  963. in this moment, I confess my sins, I repent of

  964. my sins, and I choose to recognize that Jesus.

  965. Died for me, rose again for me.

  966. And I'm going all in, and I choose to call

  967. you my Lord and Savior and I can follow you

  968. for the rest of my days.

  969. In Jesus' name,
