A Window of Opportunity | Joshua 2:15-24 | Pastor Aaron Levy

But hey, if you are newer to Joshua chapter one,

Pastor Herron kicked it off.

Wasn't that amazing the way that he kicked it off.

So Pastor Herron and Pastor Diego did Joshua chapter one,

and Joshua Chapter one dealt with God calling Joshua to

be the leader to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land.

And now we're in Joshua chapter two. Last week Pastor

Samy brought the word.

Didn't he do a fire job? Hey?

But I got beef with Samuel though, because like we

were talking like, hey, we're gonna collapse because I'm doing

chapter two.

He was like, oh, it's gonna be fun.

I could preach a little bit and then I'll pass

it off to you. He left no meat on the bone.

He's doing illustrations, he's doing scrolls, poetry, all this, and

I'm like sitting there like, well, what am I supposed

to do next week? But Joshua Chapter two is incredible

because in Joshua Chapter one, there's a temptation where we

can start feeling like, well, of course God will use

Joshua because he's right next to Moses.

He's the goodie.

Two shoes, he's the assistant. Maybe there's nepotism and it

doesn't work out for me, but it works out for Joshua.

But Joshua chapter two is awesome because God shows us.

No matter how far you are from God.

God can still use you. So yeah, Joshua was next

to the man of God. Rayhab was just next to

a lot of men. But we're gonna see how God

will use people that are far from him to bring

him glory. But I want to deal with something before

we stand. For the scripture, we'll be in Joshua two fifteen.

But before we stand, we got to deal with something

right now by a show of hands, who already knows

the rehab story, already know the rehab story, Okay, okay.

Now there's a lot of people that know the story

of Reyhea, and they're like, wait a minute, pastor, she

is in the Hall of Faith, which is in Hebrews

chapter eleven, And what do we do with the fact

that she lied?

Is it okay that she lied?

Like how do we reconcile this prostitute that lied being

in the hall of faith?

Does that reb you the wrong way? Sometimes?

And there's sometimes there are scholars that look at this.

Wait a minute, something wrong with this woman. I don't

think she should be in the hall of faith because

Rayhab hasn't gone through rehab yet. And sometimes that make

us feel more comfortable, that is like us versus them.

And then I don't I'm not like rayhb that that

that's for them. But like God can use me. But

as as I wrestle with this, do we think and

let's think.

Let's think about this. Raise your hand. It was okay

that sheed? That was funny.

Okay, raise your hand like nah, she shouldn't have lied

that she was tripping. Raid your hand if you scared

to answer, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know.

Just tell me, just tell me. Well, here's the thing.

I wrestle with this, And I think in Christianity sometimes

we put the particular situation in front of us before

we look at the principles of God. And if we

look at the Bible, there's patterns that lead to principles

that guide us on how we frame particular situations. So

here's the particular situation. Rayhab has great faith and she lied.

So the principle is God will still give honor to

our faith. Even though we're imperfect.

So for an example, raise your hand if you always

tell the truth.

Okay, so we all agree, we're a commit a community

of liars, right because some people, Oh, that was a

white lie.

No, there's Mexican lies, Black lies, Asians. Let's not make

let's not sugar coated. She lied, she didn't tell the truth.

But thanks be to God that there's a grace that's

greater than our worst days, in our worst moments.

So let's not zoom into what she did. Let's zoom into.

Our life and see, Hey, there's some areas of my

life that I'm not proud of, but thanks.

Be to God that I can have faith and still

be used for His glory. Now, now here's the thing.

Here's the thing. She didn't have to lie.

She lied to protect herself and to protect the spies.

But as I read my Bible, there's a perfect will

of God.

So here's what I believe.

Even if she told the truth, God God's will would

have still happened.

And sometimes we get afraid that I have to help

God with his will for it to happen.

So not giving her a pass, but it's just perspective

for us that I can tell the truth even if

it hurts me, and God's will will still be done

because he promised them that they'll get there inherit the land.

And we don't need to help God with his promise.

So what's the Let's go ahead and stand to our feet.

Just wanted to give us some perspective before we got

into the scriptures. We could be in Joshua chapter two,

verse fifteen through twenty one, and it goes like this.

Then she let them down by a rope through the window,

please say window, for her house was built into the

city wall, so that she lived in the wall. And

she said to them, go into the hills, or the

pursuers will encounter you and hide there. Three days into

the pursuers have returned, then afterward you may go your way.

The men said to her, we will be guiltless with

respect to this oath of yours that you have made

a swear. Behold, when we come into this land, you

shall tie this scarlet cord in the through which you

let us down, and you shall gather into your house,

your father and your mother, and your brother's and all

your father's household. Then if anyone goes out of the

doors of the house into the street. His blood shall

be on his own head, and we shall be guiltless.

But if a hand is laid on anyone who is

with you in the house, his blood shall be on

our head. But if you tell this business of ours,

don't snitch, then we shall be guiltless. With respect to

your oath that you have made a swear. And she said,

according to your words, so be it. Then she sent

them away, and they departed, and she tied the scarlet

cord in the Let's pray Heavenly Father, thank you so

much for your word. Your word is the true truth.

Your word has the power to change our lives. Now,

God help us online and help us in person to

lean in.

Lord. There's nothing good in me, but this is your word,

So use me. Get me out of the way. And

may your power.

May your anointing convict and encourage and strengthen and transform

lives in Jesus.

Nay we pray. Amen, Hey, you may be seated.

The title of this message tonight is a window of opportunity.

A window of opportunity. What I try to do sometimes

the Bible just preaches itself. It says window three times.

So I say, let's just make window the three points

and the first point is she had an opportunity. She

had a window of opportunity for faith. The second point

is she had a window of opportunity for her family.

And the third point is she had a window of

opportunity for fruit. Let's talk about faith for a moment,

but notice how it says she let them down by

a rope through the window. Let's talk about windows for

a moment. I'm gonna use this window as an example.

Windows give us the opportunity to be on the outside inside,

but see what's on the outside. And there's sometimes that

there's windows of opportunity out there that God will allow

me to see. Have you ever had a window of

opportunity maybe from a from maybe from a relationship, or

you meet somebody randomly, or you get this text message

a window of opportunity. I'm inside, but I see on

the outside that God is opening up a.

Window of opportunity. You track it with me so far.

One of the challenges with the window of opportunity when

I look through this window, there is window panes, and

there's certain panes that happen in our life that block

the window of opportunity. And what we start to do

is compartmentalize our life based upon the pains that we've experienced.

So as I look through this window pain, this is

how I look at relationships. I'll never trust a man again.

I look through this window pain through my career. It'll

never work out for me. Look through this window pain

as it relates to my health, and you.

Track it with me.

And sometimes what happens is God may be going a

window of opportunity for us, but the pain that we

see is blocking.

The opportunity that God wants for us.

And the thing about empathy is that it gives us

an opportunity to see what somebody else is going through.

So let's look at Rayhab's window. That she's looking through

her window pain. She's used to doing this because the

Bible said in Joshua too, what is it two fifteen?

It says that her window was connected to the wall.

So she's on the outskirts of the city and she

would look out the window and she would see these men.

Now we know she's a prostitute, she's in a whorehouse.

Her house is connected to the window. So you know

what song was on repeat from the window to the Okay,

my bad little preacher joke. But as she looked out,

you gotta I love Jesus and hip hop as you look.

As she looked out the window, she was looking at

opportunity because she was used to seeing men, and she

saw those men as an opportunity for her, showing that

outtrade Mike Dickney for some dollars. We see that even

today you go to Amsterdam, there's a red light district

where there is women in the windows saying, hey, I

have opportunity for you.

I want to lure you in so I can make

profit for myself.

But this woman Rayhab, hears about the Israelites, and hears

about the Israelites God, how God is kind, how God forgives,

how God does miracles, and how God protects his family.

She recognizes, wait a minute, those saying people that God

protected are coming to my city. And now she sees

these people out the window, and she sees a window

of opportunity for her. But now she's confronted because faith

without works is dead. And this is what happens with repentance,

because repentance means I change my mind about God and

I change my mind about myself. She would look through

the window, see a man and try to lure that

man in. Not this time, she would see men out

the window thinking about what she heard. Faith comes by hearing,

hearing the word of God, And instead of trying to

lure men in for.

Her prophet, she lets men out for their profit. She

literally let profits out her window. Double on Tandra.

Because what ends up happening is she says, hey, you

see this rope right here. I want you to use

this rope. She would use rope. She would use her

looks to trap men and say, hey, come inside with me.

Now she's saying, I want to use this rope and

provide an opportunity to let you free faith coming into action.

See James chapter two talks about this. I want to

read this because it's challenging for us.

It's cool.

So when we read about it for rehab, it's challenging.

The thing do we do this for ourselves? Because if

we look at James chapter two, it says, what good

is it?

My brothers?

If someone says he has faith but does not have works,

can that faith save him? If a brother or sister

is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one

of you says to them go in peace, be warmed

and filled without giving them the things needed for the body.

What good is that? So faith by itself does not

have works, it's dead.

Here's what ray Aap did not do.

She didn't look out her window and say God, will

you bless me?

God will you protect me? God will you help me?

And there's nothing wrong with praying, But God says, okay,

what action are you taking. See a lot of times

I prayed in my life, God, will you bless me? God,

bless me, bless me, bless me? And God wants to know, Hey, Aaron,

who are you blessing? Who are you blessing? Who are

you blessing? The other day because my daughter Trinity loves

to shop, and I said, Trinity for not buying an

nothing today?

So she said, okay, Dad, you know what's fun. Let's

window shop because she's hoping that she can move me

to buy or something. Have you ever been window shopping?

So think about windows shopping.

You're walking by and you see something and you like, oh,

I think that will look good on me. A lot

of times me and my wife be walking by and

there'll be some mannequins like posing like and I'll be like, babe,

out of the three, which one you think? Are you think?

Are you this one?

Oh?

Hell?

Okay?

Because a lot of times we look through the window

and we picture what we can look like.

We do that in church often.

Well, we look at another marriage and we see them

holding hands. Man, me and my spouse don't hold hands

when they come to church. We look at somebody's kids. Dang,

my kid cussed me out on a wait here all right?

They kids.

We're looking through the other side, and from our lens

we say like, wait, how do I and we windows

shop Because it cost to have a healthy marriage, It

costs to have a peace of mind, it costs to

have freedom. So a lot of times we see, hey,

I want to be blessed like that person.

Hey you want to go to the grove track. I'm busy, Brown,

I'm busy, busy. It costs time. Hey, I want to

be healed from my past. Have you been toford Ah?

Thursdays are busy.

It cost humility to be open enough to say I

need healing.

And sometimes it may be stuck. And sometimes what.

Happens when we're not willing to pay the cost to

look like what's on the outside.

We just start putting our blinders on. I don't want

to see these fake Christians. We start talking.

Negatively about the people that trigger us because our life

don't look like them. So we start to isolate ourselves

because I used to look at these prey people, but

I tried to join a neighborhood group and people were

mean to me. And people were But all we're doing

is being an echo chamber because we're not willing to

pay the cost of what it looks like to look

like what we saw in the window shop. And what

God is encouraging us today is, hey, don't be a

window shopper. God is giving you a window of opportunity

to see that you can be blessed, you can be healed,

you can be restored. But will you come out of hiding?

Will you open up about your marriage? Will you open

up about your finances, will you open up about your habits?

Or do we stay isolated and shut people out?

And when reyhab didn't do I want to change my life,

So I'm just gonna close my blinds. No, she kept

them opened and blessed someone else, and her faith did

not only lead to herself. For point number two, there

was a window of opportunity for her family. So let's

continue reading and see how she had a window of

opportunity for her family Joshua two eighteen. Behold, when you

come into the land, you shall tie this scarlet cord

in the window the which you let us down, and

you shall gather into your house your father and your mother,

and your brothers, and all your father's household. You know

what's so beautiful about the Bible. The same window that

she used to bless the spies ended up being the

same window of opportunity God gave her to bless her

family one season of her life, window of opportunity for

her to bless others. Rope of opportunity. I want you

to be protected, and will you be kind to me?

Next season of her life? She gets a cord, But

this one's red. This one doesn't look like the other one.

This one's different. And what the spies do is to say, hey,

remember how you.

Are kind to me. Thank you, We're gonna be kind

to you.

Jericho is gonna be destroyed, but your family doesn't have

to be destroyed.

Well, things are gonna go It's gonna go down.

It's crazy, So you got to put a red cord

on the outside of your window. And when destructions happen,

if you got a red cord in front of you,

you're gonna be saved. Now, if we look at the Bible,

like every page is about Jesus, we get very excited

because this right here is a picture of the Gospel.

Because what happens is when we're on the inside and

we're looking at the pain that has happened in our life,

God wants to show us He died on the cross

for that plane, there was other pain that he endured

when he shed his blood on the cross, and this

is a sign of salvation. This is a sign of

I know that you've endured some pain. So I'm not

trying to belittle your plaine, but I'm kind of give

you redemption through your pain. See, the Gospel was not

about just ignoring and belittling things that we've gone through.

Jesus sees it. Jesus knows you. Jesus will be there

for you. But he gives you hope.

But the same window that she used to open for

others became the pathway that she got helped. Think about

a situation in your life that has caused you pain.

Could that be the very window of opportunity where God

wants to put his filter of grace on the covering

of it. Because if we look at the context, the

children of Israel would.

Just have experienced the passover.

Where destruction was coming into the city and whatever blood

was on the doorposts, they were saved. Now the Spies

were doing the same thing in a different season, paying

it forward for her being that God bless me, I'm

gonna bless rayhalf.

And that's what community looks like. That is not just

for us to be blessed by God.

God wants to bless our entire family when he changes

our perspective on how we see pain in our life.

Let me give you an example. I remember my grandmother.

I would ask my grandmother how this stuff makes sense,

and she said, just keep living, just keep living, just

keep having birthdays.

And I was like what.

And now I'm at that age, well, I'm starting to

see that nanime sense because it was about twenty years

ago where one of my friends borrow a thousand dollars.

Long story short, I didn't get that thousand dollars back.

Now, I don't know if you've ever let a homie

borrow some money here's what I would say, if they're

a friend, don't let them borrow money. If you have it,

just give it to them, because relationships are more important

than money. And what happened in that season of my

life is about twenty years ago.

It wasn't about the money. It was about the disrespect.

I'm feeling disrespected and had a hard time forgiving because

have you ever let somebody borrow money they haven't paid

you back, but they're flexing on Instagram with new shoes

they get. Long story short, God was dealing with me

because forgiveness is about my freedom, not their freedom.

And this was eating me up on the inside.

About the disrespect, and I felt like God told me

to sit this person down, look at them in their eyeballs,

and say, hey, what you've done is wrong.

You didn't give me my money back. I forgive you. You

don't have to pay me the money back.

I felt that was necessary for me because my peace

of mind is worth more than one thousand dollars. So

it wasn't about getting the money back. It wasn't about

that relationship. It's about my peace of mind. Release that person. Now,

that doesn't mean that you stay best friends, all right?

Here's another thousand. Non't be stupid, but freedom eyeballs. I

forgive you done. Don't see that person for years, about

six years ago, fourteen years later, I didn't know I

would be a pastor. I did not know that I

would be a campus pastor. I did not know that

we would be looking for a building now. During this time, rejection, rejection, rejection,

going everywhere, and pum Ona looking for a place. Then

I found out on September thirteen, twenty nineteen, Salvation Army

may be for sale. I drive there instantly, wasn't dressed

like this. I had my shirt tucked in, all business greetings.

I'm Aaron, heard you guys might be selling it.

Blah blah blah. Talk to the pastor, gave a tour.

My soul is burning on the inside. I'm picturing baptisms.

This could happen.

Oh my god, Curtis, you remember I asked you to

pray on New Year's So here's what happened. I talked

to the pastors and I say, hey, let's talk about

next steps. They walked me over to an office and say, hey,

let me connect you with the administrator that will help

you with next step. Open the door. Guess who the

person is. So I see the person, and being that

I was free, I.

Was able to say, what's good, Hey, how you doing now?

The person was like, gave him a huck. Hey get

contact information? We had each other's contact information. I get

a text message, thank you for treating me like a friend,

even though I didn't treat you like a friend. I'm

selling you one thousand dollars right now, and I will

do whatever I can to help you get this building.

There ain't no way I would have thought that my

little thousand dollars and that little story would be connected

to Patrio Pomona, the campus that we had faith to forgive,

not to just bless me, but to bless the family.

We were there this past Friday, we saw over five

hundred young adults praising and worshiping and giving their life

to God. And when I'm standing in that, I'm just thinking, God,

you are so merciful, You're so perfect, your timing is wonderful.

But thank you that your grace is sufficient.

I thank God that he connects those stories because it

reminds us the benefits of freedom. I say that to say,

who do you need to forgive? And what could that

be connected to Now. I didn't say forgive somebody you

get a building. I didn't say that at all. But

forgiveness doesn't mean we're friends. Forgiveness means I'm free. And

when we see people through the lens of Christ, one

of the things that we see is you cause me pain.

But Jesus died for me.

Blessings not just for me, but blessings for my family.

To conclude, I want to talk about the window of

opportunity for fruit verse twenty one through twenty four.

And she said, according to your words, so be it.

Then she sent them away, and they departed, and she

tied the scarlet cord in the window. They departed and

went into the hills and remained there three days until

the pursuers returned. And the pursuers reached all along the

way and found nothing.

Then the two men returned.

They came down from the heels and passed over and

came to Joshua, the son of None, and they told

him all that happened to them.

They said to Joshua the spies.

Truly the Lord has given all the land into our hands.

And also the inhabitants of the land melt away because

of us. They come back to Joshua and they bring

a great praise report. The context of this is crazy

because remember I'll talk about stories decades ago.

The same situation happened here decades ago.

So if you look at numbers, chapter thirteen and fourteen,

Joshua was a part of the spies for Moses spying

out the land, and then the twelve spies, ten out

of the twelve bring a bad report. Number says that

the whole children of Israel start crying, didn't believe in God,

and it cost them forty years. Joshua said, you know,

I ain't dealing with that again. We ain't senning twelve spies.

We sent in two. Sometimes all you need is two friends.

My trinity, my youngest daughter. She said, I have twelve

best friends. I have three super best friends, and I'm like,

keep living there. But there's these two spies. And this

is why I love the context of the Bible. It

says all the inhabitants of the land melt away because

of us.

Where did they get that from? They got that from Rahab.

If we look at the context and Joshua chapter two,

verse nine through eleven, let's look what Let's look at

Rayhab told the spies, and she said to them, I

know that the Lord has given the land, and that

the fear of you has fallen upon us, and all

the inhabitants of the land melt away before you. For

we have heard how the Lord had dried up the

water of the Red Sea before you came out of Egypt,

and what you did to the two kings of the

Amorites who are beyond the Jordan, the Sihon and aug

and whom you devoted to destruction. And as soon as

we heard it, faith comes. By hearing hearing the word

of God, our hearts melted second time, and there was

no spirit left in any man because of you. For

the Lord your God, he is God and the heavens

and on the earth beneath.

This is beautiful church.

Because there will be some people in your life that

will only look at the Rayhab that's a prostitute and

a liar, and ignore the fact that she had the

faith to risk her life declare that God is God

and say that our hearts melted when we heard about

your God. So her words were deposited into the spies

and it multiplied.

So now the spies can go back to Joshua and say, hey,

we got it, we could do this. God's faithful, God's

promises are true.

Let me tell you what the people are saying, not

knowing that the people is the outcast, the people is

the one that people will look down upon. And I

wonder how many times in my life are in your

life that people will zoom into one season of your life,

one moment of your life, and not emphasize the fact

that wait a minute, she.

Planted that seed.

From what she shared that multiplied all the way to

Joshua six. And we'll get there soon. But the the

principle for us is what do your words taste?

Like?

Have you ever said something and as soon as it

comes out, you're like, it's gone, and you know that

hurt that person and you know that you didn't mean

to say that. And that's a product of us talking

to people before we pray to God, and when we

do that, and when we talk to God, God to

get at us about that.

Because God's like, you want me to talk to you

like that, You want me to throw your stuff in

your face like that.

See, our goal is to treat people how God treats us.

We don't treat people how they treat us. That's what

Christians do.

Now, when we look at this story, we see that

the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.

I want to read it Matthew chapter twelve, and then

we'll close with that. Matthew Chapter twelve, thirty three through

thirty seven.

Either make the tree and it's fruit good, or make

the tree and it's fruit bad. For the tree is

known by its fruit. Your brute of vipers. Now, Jesus,

this is Christian cussin. Jesus is telling these people, hey,

you will, But he didn't sin. That's why he said

brute of vipers. That's why if you get mad at

your spouse, say you're a brut of vipers. Jesus, No,

I'm just kidding, completely kidding.

How can you speak good when you are evil?

For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth

speak the good person, out of the good treasures bring

forth good, and the evil person, out of his evil treasure,

brings forth evil. I will tell you, on the day

of judgment, people will give an account for every careless

word they speak.

For by your words you will be justified, and by

your words you will be condemned. Words are the fruit

of your faith. What do you believe about God?

And does the belief that you have in God, does

it influence you enough to change your heart on the inside,

to speak peace and to speak kindness and to speak

blessings on others. We get tested when we get hurt.

We get tested when we get offended. We get tested

when we let people borrow money and then they flex.

But God says, hey, let my word penetrate your bitterness.

Let my word penetrate your hurt, and that'll give you

the filter and the empowerment to speak blessings to others. So,

to conclude tonight, one of the things that kept me

away from God, it wasn't my sin.

It was my perspective because as I looked at my.

Life and I would see things that are going through

my life. The gospel of Aaron Levy was I need

to look through the lens of my performance.

All the good works that I do.

So I have pain in my life, some that I've

caused on myself, and I have consequences, some that.

People have done to me.

But I tell myself, if I work hard enough, if

I have enough good deeds, I can push past the

pain with discipline, I can push past the pain with serving,

with reading my Bible, with being a good Christian. The

problem with this is that in God's eyes, our work

is just filthy rags. That doesn't mean we stop trying

to bless people, but it does mean let's stop trying

to bless people to.

Earn favor from God.

There will be other seasons in my life where I

would give up on this, and then I will go

into isolation and people wouldn't know what I would be

going through, and I would have the nerve.

To look up to God and say, God, will.

You open a window of heaven for.

Me while my window is closed? It's not my sin

my perspective.

Why would God open a window from heaven if my

window is closed? So when I try to get protected

from people, not only am I boxing out people, I'm boxing.

Out God and I don't even know it. What about you?

What about some of the commitments that you've made to

yourself that I won't be me again. I'm not gonna

go through that again. Could it be that God is

trying to open up a way for your freedom, but

we're blocking that ourself. While saying, God, why don't you

do something? And God said, I'm trying to you open

your heart to me.

There's only two perspectives, your work or the work of Christ.

Which one do you choose? Tonight? See the thing about salvation.

All we're doing is saying, hey, I know I'm not perfect,

but here's what's harder. Hey, I know that no matter

what I do, I can't inherit heaven.

That might be the harder pill for you to swallow.

There doesn't matter.

You can live here, you can serve here, you can

give all your money. That is not the ticket to heaven.

God's work on the cross, his blood that was shed

for us, his work accomplished any work that we can

ever do.

So salvation is I'm dropping anything. I don't want credit

for anything of it. We sing about God's glory.

God's glory is accepting what He's done and exalting his

name and ignoring what we've done.

Let's pray God. We're just gonna let that sit in

our soul for a second. Some of us.

Are experiencing some real pains, and we learned tonight that

you have seen our pain and you've given us a

means of restoration. May we look past our pain to

see the pain that you've endured for us on the cross.

Thank you, Fathers for sending your son Jesus perfect to

live the life that we couldn't live and die the

death that we deserve. Now, God give us the courage

and the humility to admit that we can't do this

on our own. I thank you, Holy Spirit. In this moment,

you are influencing hearts to surrender to you.

I thank you.

In this moment, Holy Spirit, you are influencing hearts.

To come back to you. You could do it for rehab,

you could do it for us. In Jesus' name. Let's

open our eyes for a moment.

I want to give you a personal invitation not to

be a part of our church or to be blessed.

I want to give you a personal invitation to start

walking with Jesus, a personal invitation to have a relationship

with Christ.

What does that.

Mean is what we just spelled out that I'm gonna

stop trying to be good. I'm gonna stop trying to

work so hard to be improved, to improve. I'm gonna

surrender to God and take the first step in walking

forward with forgiveness. There's some of you tonight. You've done

that years ago. You know what it's like to be free.

You're on your way to heaven. But there are some

pains that have happened in your life, and through those

pains has clouded your perspective, and some of you may

be in isolation.

Patria means family.

We want to be a safe place to help facilitate

you coming back home to your father. He misses you,
