When God Moves, We Move | Joshua 3:9-17 | Pastor Nathan Mesa

It's a non negotiable for your life. No, why do

we have such conviction about prayer being so valuable and

so important and it's not carried into the other spiritual

discipline of giving.

They're both spiritual disciplines.

They're both ways in which we serve God. And we

are apt to pick up that prayer mantle charge, but

we're not quick to pick up that giving charge in mantle.

And yet, As tells us about a man named Cornelius

who did both. His prayer life was epic, but his

generosity and generosity was epic too. I want to be

a balanced Christian. I don't want this to be high

prayer and this to be low. I want them to

be at the same level, because they're serving a God

that has done so much for you and for me.

I challenge you today, don't just be a spiritual warrior

in prayer and be a spiritual coward in generosity. I

want you to soar not only in prayer, but I

want you to soar in generosity, both spiritual disciplines. There's

four ways for you to give today. You could give online,

you could give through our push pay app. You could

you could give out in the foyer, but we want

to thank you so much for being a Christian who's

a prayer warrior and a generosity warrior.

All right, well, good evening family. How's everyone doing tonight.

It's good to be with you. I am Pastor Nathan

if we never had the opportunity to meet, and I'm

excited to be with you as we continue in the

Book of Joshua. Whether this is your first time on

a Wednesday night or you've been with us since the

beginning of the year. We are diving through the Book

of Joshua all year long, and so we're excited to

journey together as we discover what God has and says

over our life. I have the privilege of picking up

from Pastor Joel a couple weeks ago, and so if

you were with us, Pastor Joel kicked things off by

diving into Joshua chapter three, and so if you have

the Word of God, you have your Bibles, will you

turn to Joshua chapter three with me. Pastor Joel set

the tone and taught from verses one through eight, and

tonight we're going to continue on with part two as

we pick up in verse nine, and I believe as

we journey through the second half of Joshua three, that

I believe that God has something for us all tonight,

right where we are. But before we jump into the passage,

I want us to rewind a little bit.

Are you okay with that?

We're going to rewind a little bit to bring some

context as to where we are as we jump in

to the Word of God.

So as we rewind.

In Exodus, shortly after the Israelites crossed the Red Sea,

God displayed this miraculous moment where he split the Red

Sea and the Israelites were able to pass through, and

they moved out of the bondage and the slavery of

Egypt as they journeyed toward the Promised Land. But as

they made their way out of Egypt, shortly after this,

the Israelites went to build a golden calf to worship

a false idol, while Moses was away at the top

of the mountain having a moment with God and receiving

the Ten Commandments. Now forty years later, here we are.

The Ten Commandments are now in the ark of the Covenant.

Joshua is now the leader. Moses has died and Joshua

is leading the Israelites toward the Promised Land what Moses

was not able to do. But before they do, they're

coming up against a raging river, and God is essentially

saying to them, all, let's try doing this again. Your

ancestors messed up. They didn't listen the first time. So

let's see if you guys, will be obedient and have

the faith and patience this time around. You see, family,

God may not give you the same battle as those

before you, but you may face the same tests in

your life. And when you face those tests, we have

a choice on how we will respond. Our title tonight

is if you are taking notes, is simply when God

moves we move tonight through the second half of chapter three.

We will discover three essential keys to move past our

Jordan experience and crossover into God's per for our life.

And if you are taking notes, I'm going to give

you those three keys ahead of time. As we journey together,

you must remember the promise, you must remember the presence,

and you must remember the provision. Will you stand with

me as we get ready to read the Word of

God together. We're going to read a first part of

the half of the passage today, and then we'll continue

on as we journey through, and we're going to pick up.

Like I said in verse number nine, Say amen, if

you're there with me in verse number nine, we're picking

up now. And Joshua said to the people of Israel,

come here and listen to the words of the Lord,

your God. And joshuas said, here is how you shall

know the Living God is among you, that he will

without fail drive out from you before the Canaanites and

the Hittites, and the Hittites, and the Perizites, and the Girgashites,

and the Amorashites and the Jebucites. Behold, the Ark of

the Covenant of the Lord of all the Earth is

passing over before you in the Jordan. Now, therefore, take

twelve men from the tribes of Israel, from each tribe

a man. And when the souls of the feet of

the priests, bearing the ark of the Covenant, excuse me

bearing the ark of the Lord, the Lord of all

the Earth, shall rest in the waters of the Jordan.

And the waters of the Jordan shall be cut off.

Say off, they will be cut off from flowing, and

the waters coming down from above shall stand in one heap.

Let's pray. God, we thank you Father for your word. Tonight.

God, we ask you to be with us, visit us

during this time. God, May we leave here change God,

because your word has come alive and spoke to us directly. God,

May I just be a willing vessel. May Nathan get

out of the way and the Holy Spirit flow in

your name. I pray, Amen, you may be seated reach

the shores of the Jordan River. A couple of weeks ago,

Pastor Joel talked about us as they made their way

towards the Jordan River. And so now they're here. They're

on their way to the Promised Land. The wilderness is

behind them, the promised land is in front of them,

but there is a raging river that is in between them.

They got a big problem in front of them, and

this river separates them from their pass to where God

is desiring them to go. And I'm not sure if

anyone has ever been there before. Where you're standing on

the threshold of a promise.

You could see it. You know, God has something good

for you, great for you.

But there's as if there's a massive barrier standing in between.

It says, if there's this massive river that stands behind

and in front of you, and what God desires for

your life, what you've been praying for, what you've been

believing for, And you're wondering, God, am I ever going

to cross over?

Am I ever gonna get there?

Am I the only one that has ever stood as

something like that before? Perhaps it's a raging river of finances,

a raging river of a bad relationship, the raging river

of some bad habits. And it's as if the river

just keeps getting higher and higher, stronger and stronger. And

that's where we are. We're standing at the banks of

the Jordan River. There's approximately two million Israelites that are

waiting to cross over to the Promised Land, and they're

brought to the edge of this raging river.

What normally is.

A very calm and peaceful river is raging during the season, because,

as we will read, we will realize that right now

during this time, it was harvest season, which means it

probably took place sometime in April during springtime, and the

snow from the snow capped mountain of Mount Hermon began

to melt and was coming down all the way down.

The Jordan River.

The Jordan river actually means to flow down or descend.

So the river itself is already at a decline. And

now you put on top of that the snowcapped mountains melting.

This river has turned into a raging river that is

approximately two miles in width and approximately one hundred feet

in depth. So we're not talking about a little cute

river that you take your kids fishing in.

We are talking about a.

Massive flow, a body of water that is standing in

front of them. And they were told for three days

to just stand there, sit and wait, to look. For

three days they had to stare at this obstacle that

was in front of them, And if.

They were anything like me, they probably were filled.

With all types of emotions, probably fear, doubt, worry. Got

you brought us to this point? The promised land is

over there? Then why is this ri in front of us?

But I love what Joshua says in verse nine, and

I want to break that down with us tonight. And

so in verse nine Joshua tells them, he says to

the people, and Joshua said, to the people of Israel,

come here. The word here. The root word in Hebrew

is hen nah. This root word here means to draw near.

He says, come, draw near, come here and listen. The

Hebrew word here is summa, which means to listen. Get

this with the intent to obey to the words, the

words of the Lord, which is the word of God,

also known as the promises of God.

So let's bring it together with.

Joshua is saying to the two million Israelites, guys, guys, guys,

come here and draw near and listen with the intent

to obey the promises of the Lord, your God. And

he furthers in verse ten, as we read, to tell

them what those promises are. He tells them, the promises

are the Lord God will be with you, and he

will give the enemies over to your hand.

That is the promise. That is what you have to

focus on.

But as he gave these promises, he is encouraging them

that the only way it will come is it will

come by faith when you silence the distractions.

Of the noise around you and you be obedient to

what my word says.

If you've ever been to the Colorado River before, maybe

you've ever been to Niagara Falls or any rushing river really,

then you know that it could be a very loud experience.

It could be very overwhelming.

It could almost be scary when you look at this

body of water that is rushing as large as it is.

I want you to take a look at this video

of the actual Jordan River during a high season. So

that's a part of the Jordan River in Israel, and

so I want you to imagine that, but on a

huge scale. For three days. That is what the Israelites

were staring at. And just like a river in the natural,

oftentimes the Jordan River, moments in our life can.

Be quite loud.

Where we take a look at the noise of any

financial hardship, the noise of in a strange relationship, the

noise of worry and doubt in our life, the noise

of anxiety that just consumes our mind and our actions.

And with these moments happen like Joshua, God tells.

Us, my son, my daughter, come here, Come here and

draw near to my word and listen to what my

word says for you and over you and for your life.

We have a choice on what we are gonna allow

the noise to be within our life. Are we gonna

allow the noise of the barrier and the obstacle before us.

Are we gonna allow the noise of the word of

God to be much louder? But so often in our

life we want the promises of God, but we don't

want to do the hard work of trusting Him through

the childs. We want the peace that comes from His promises,

but we want to avoid the discipline and the obedience

and the correction that comes along away. We want to

experience His power in our life, but we don't want

to endure the refining process that comes along with that.

We desire the joy of His presence, but I don't

want to sacrifice my time, my comfort, my effort, or

my appro my priorities along the way. We are waiting

for God to stop the flow of rivers in our life.

When God is just waiting on us to take a

step of faith, even if it means getting wet. Turn

to someone and say, it's time to take a step.

It's time to listen to the promises. Let's continue on.

As we dive into the next couple verses, follow with me.

In verse fourteen, as soon Joshua is still speaking to

the Israelites. As soon as you see the arc of

the covenant of the Lord your God, being carried by

the levitical priests, then you shall set out from your

place and follow it. So when the people set out

from their tents to pass over the Jordan, with the

priests bearing the ark of the covenment before the people,

and as soon as those bearing the ark had come

as far as the Jordan, and the feet of the

priests bearing the ark were dipped in the brink of

the water. Now the Jordan overflows atle its banks. Throughout

this time of harvests, the waters coming down above stood

and rows in a heat very far away at Adam,

the city that is besides Zarathan, and those flowing down

towards the Sea of Araba, the salt sea, were completely

cut off, and the people passed over opposite of Jericho.

In order for you to cross over, in order for

me to cross over to what God desires for our life,

we have to follow God's presence. Remember here we are.

We're at the bank of this rushing Jordan river. The

promise is in front of him, but so is that river.

And through Joshua, the leader, God instructed that the priest

carrying the ark would have to be the first to

step into the river. Not a military leader, not a politician,

not a wealthy person, not even Joshua said I will

be the one to lead. He said, the priest carrying

the ark of the Covenant must be the first to

go into the water.

Remember Pastor Joel talked a little bit about this.

The ark of the Covenant was the physical manifestation of

God's presence during this time. The arc carried the Ten Commandments,

the arc carried manna, it carried Aaron's rod. It was

very symbolic during this time. And so what Joshua was

saying is that before you ever get into that river,

the priest carrying the presence of God must.

Go before you.

It wasn't Joshua's strength, it wasn't the presability.

It wasn't even a random.

Act of weather that stopped the water from flowing that day.

It was simply because of God's presence that went before them.

And when you follow.

God's presence, the river that seems uncrossable becomes the pathway

to his promise, the thing, the barrier, the obstacle that

stands before you, God will utilize to create the pathway

for where He is desiring you and I to go.

In our life, the only way to cross over was

through the river. But when you allowed the presence of

God to lead you, the barriers that separate us, those

obstacles that separate us from our goals and the promises

that God has for our life are merely just stepping

stones to the path that He has set before you.

The instructions were very simple. I love to read it

in practical terms. For me, it says Joshua said, follow

the arc, stay behind the ark, let the arc lead

the way, Let the priest lead the way.

Do not get in front of the ark.

Follow my presence and my Gosh, are these commands not

needed for our lives today? Nathan, follow my presence, Pastor Kinny.

Keep an eye on my presence. Listen to my words, Nathan.

Allow my presence to flow in your life, Nathan.

Don't get ahead of my plans.

Nathan, stop overthinking my ways. Keep your focus on my presence.

It's that simple.

Does anyone desire to cross over to what God says

and has for your life tonight? I love what Pastor

Jabin Chavez describes. He says that if we desire to

cross over and seek the presence of God, then you

have to commit to the tempo and the rhythm of

the Holy Spirit within your life. For the Israelites, they

had the Ark of the Covenant. Where the Ark went,

they were to follow. They were instructed to even keep

a distance. If you remember from a couple weeks ago.

If the ark veered left, they were to veer left.

If the ark.

Stopped, they stopped behind it.

And for us, because of Jesus Christ, we have the

Holy Spirit in our life to lead us. And if

you were to walk in God's promises, and I think

that's all of us that desire to do that, to

cross over our Jordan river, we cannot get ahead of

where the Holy Spirit is leading within our life.

What does this mean?

It means allowing God to lead rather than going ahead

with the plan that we think are right for us.

Allowing the Holy Spirit.

To lead rather than trying to take a shortcut or

force something to make sense or to happen.

We need to allow the Holy Spirit to lead.

And at the same time, we can't lag behind the

Holy Spirit either. When we lag behind the Holy Spirit,

what can happen is is that can lead to confusion,

that leads to doubt, that leads to a misdirection or misopportunities.

If we're too far away from the leading of the

Holy Spirit. We don't know is that God's voice? Is

that my voice? Is that Satan's voice? Is that my

friend's voice? Is that my spouse's voice. I don't know

whose voice that is. Caster Adams just shared about on

Sunday about this about listening and knowing the voice of

the Shepherd. And so if we cannot see God, and

if we cannot hear God, then you and I are

not close enough to God. Simple math, simple math for us.

And the only way we can hear God, the only

way we know God is when we're spending time with God.

It's when we're spending time in that world. It's when

we're knowing what these promises are that God has over

our life. We have to draw near to God, turn

to someone and say, draw near to his presence. One

of the things my wife and I love to do

is to go dancing, especially when we're on vacation, and

we love to assault the dances. So anytime Latin music

is turned on, I'm on the dance floor and we're

there and in my head, I.

Think I'm really, really really good.

I think I'm really good and so I consider myself

like the Latin lover to my wife when we're we're

on that dance floor, she's laughing and saying otherwise, but really, really,

really really I'm good.

I'm good, and I enjoy it.

But here's the thing I've learned some things along the

way by learning a salsa dance. There has to be

a lead and there has to be a follower. And

oftentimes the man is the lead and the female is

the follower. And when you're salsa dancing and you have

a lead, the follower has to be very attentive to

where the leader is moving.

You have to be in sync. You have to watch

their commands.

You have to watch the direction and flow and the

signals that he's going.

You have to stay in harmony with the music.

That's how it becomes alive, is when you're moving in

harmony together and the follower is following the lead of

the leader. And the greatest thing of it all is

only one can lead. And when the follower tries to

get ahead of the leader, what happens.

You're stepping on your feed.

And you're stepping on toes and next thing you know,

you give up and you want to sit down, and

that's what Joshua is speaking about. He's saying, don't get

ahead of the priests. Don't get ahead of the arc.

If you get ahead of the arc, that means you're

ahead of the presence of God and you're out of order.

That's not where you should be.

You should be behind my presence, following my presence. God

is the one that sets the tone and the speed

within our life.

There is an order, and God must go first.

Deuteronomy thirty one eight says it is the Lord who

goes before you, he will be with you. Isaiah forty

five to two says I will go before you, and

I will level the mountains, I will break down gates

of bronze, and I will cut through bars of iron.

God's presence desires to go before us in the.

Time that we are living now. We have to be

led by the Spirit. I'm gonna say it again.

In the day and time we are living in now,

we have to desire to be led by the Holy

Spirit in my life, your life. I desire the presence

of God to go before.

Me in everything that I do.

Before we ever face a test, I want his presence

to go before before I ever get on a plane.

Can I get a witness?

I want His presence to already go before me before

I ever get into a car and drive two hours

to work. I want the presence of God to go

before me, and I want the Holy Spirit to lead

the way. Are we allowing the Holy Spirit to lead

every area of our life or are we picking and

choosing where we're inviting him in. When God's presence goes

before us, everything changes. So how do we stay in

that beautiful rhythm with the Holy Spirit. Some of these

ways are prayer, when we're spending time communing and talking

with God. We stay in rhythm through devotion, when we're

reading God's word and understanding what God's Word has for

our life, when we walk in trust and obedience, and

when we do life in community like we are tonight

or through a neighborhood group or coming out to the

men's night. That is how we stay in rhythm with

the Holy Spirit. This is how we don't rush into

a calling. This is how we don't rush into a relationship.

This is how we don't rush into something that looks

enticing and pretty. But when we allow the Holy Spirit

to lead, then we know that God is leading us

in the direction. God's presence doesn't just lead the way,

but it makes the way. Allow God to make a

way in your life today by getting out of the

way and allowing God's presence to lead. Let's continue reading

in verse seventeen. Now the priests bearing the ark of

the Covenant of the Lord stood firmly on dry ground

in the midst of the Jordan River. And all Israel

was passing over on dry, say dry dry ground, until

all the nation finished passing over the Jordan. Joshua here

points Israel not just to a physical place, to the promise,

the promise that God would provide a way for his

people to cross into the promised land. And through the

faith of the priests, they led the very presence of

God that we just discovered into the rushing waters of

the Jordan.

So now I want you to picture this.

Here we are the priests carrying the ark of the

Covenant had to make their way now to the brink

of the river.

And they were either going to lead.

The way for the people of Israel with a boldness

and a courage and obedience, or they were going to

remain on the shoreline. Well, as we say, they took

the ark of the Covenant, and they began to lead

the way in that water, maybe full of faith.

Maybe a little scared, maybe with.

A little bit of doubt, but certainly with a whole

bunch of obedience. And as they made their way into

the water, it says that they stood. And as they stood,

what began to happen was this raging river began to

fall lower and lower, and lower and lower, and all

of a sudden it turned into dry ground. God's provision,

this is our last point, was manifested by following the

presence of God. As they stood there, the waters stopped

flowing completely and it ran dry. The Word of God

says that they walked on dry ground twice. So I

believe whenever there's repetition, God wants us to see something,

to learn something, and to apply something within our life.

He emphasizes to us that they walked on dry ground.

Why do I believe that God was telling us this

to show us that his miracles are complete and they

are perfect for our life. It wasn't that God calmed

the waters. It didn't say that he lessened the waters

just a little bit so that they could pass through.

It doesn't say that the waters were muggy, a muddy

or soggy, or just damp enough that they could walk

through the puddles to get to the other side.

The Word of God says it was withered dry.

The land was made completely safe, so every single one

of them would be able to cross over, and it

was perfected by the provision of God.

So often in our life we.

Are, okay, praying for partial miracles from God. How many

of us have been there before where we're just praying

for just a little bit of relief. God, just give

me a little bit of relief. Just cut me a

little bit of slack. Will you just improve my situation? God,

just a little bit? Can you lessen the waters? God,

just a little bit?

But that's not how God works, That's not what his

word just said.

We're over here asking for shallow waters when God is

ready to provide dry ground within our life. Some of

us are praying for crumbs. And God is ready to

give you a feast tonight within your life. He is

not a god of just to get by. He is

El Shadai, the God of more than enough. And I'm

not talking about prosperity tonight. I am talking about that

we serve a God of completeness and wholeness, a God

who finishes what he starts in perfect, perfect order. God

doesn't want you to settle less when He is able

to do so much more in your life. He is

able to bring a complete provision in our life today.

The question is do we believe that? The question is

do we have.

Faith to ask for dry ground in the midst of

a raging river that may be before us. I want

us to remember what Paul says in Ephesians three twenty.

Now to him who is able to do far more

abundantly than all we could ask or think, according to

the power that is at work within us.

This is the provision of God. Family.

The provision of God is that God can provide abundantly

more than we could ever imagine.

That is what the Beyond campaign is all about.

If you've been with us the past couple weeks, there

is a vision within this church.

There are dreams within.

This church here at Patria, and a twenty million dollar

goal was given to our lead pastor, Pastor Adam, so

that we can move forward to where we believe God

desires for Patrio to go. God has for Patrio that

we would do more to foster community. And in the natural,

twenty million may seem a lot and impossible, But when

we're talking about the presence of God leading, then we

know that his provision is there. And if his provision

is there, then his needs will be met and so

our needs will be met by His power. And so

that is what we are believing God for that through

the Beyond campaign, we'll be able to foster more community.

We're reimagining our worship spaces, and we're reimagining the next generation.

For some it may sound a little bit overwhelming, but

like I said, where God is leading, where God is directing,

I'm here to tell you that there is great provision

available and the same is true for our life tonight, family,

for many of us. If anything at all, that we

walk away saying it's time that I pray some bigger prayers.

It's time that we pray some bolder prayers. It's time

that we listen to the promises of God, and like

Joshua said, we listen with the intent to obey and

to walk it out. The greatest provision that you and

I could ever receive was God sending his son Jesus

to die on the Cross for you and I and

our sins that we may have eternity with Him. I'm

so grateful that not only do we get to experience

the provision of God here on this earth, but we

will one day see God's provision even greater in heaven.

To get too many people that I've seen and I've

interacted with, are chasing after the provision of God. They're

chasing after the blessing, and it's overshadow, chasing after Jesus.

More favor, more blessing, more resources, more material things, more peace,

and all those things are wonderful, and God can provide

all of that, and I believe God desires to do

that for our life as well. But the first step

is when we prioritize God's presence, when we allow the

leading of the Holy Spirit in our life. That is

when we position ourselves for God to have his provision

flow within our life. Jesus, excuse me, just as He

made a way through the waters that day, we serve

a God that will make a way.

In your life.

His provision is never late, his provision is never lacking,

and his provision is always enough. Jesus, just as the

people of Israel crossed over the Jordan River that day.

They crossed over with a promise. They crossed over with the.

Presence of God leading them, and they crossed over with

the provision of God that walked with them on dry

ground every step of the way. I don't know what

you are needing to cross over today. I don't know

what you may need to cross over tomorrow. But we

will all face a Jordan River experience at some point

in our life, and we will all need to cross over.

And I don't know about you, but I don't want

to drown in no river. I don't want no river

to take me out. I don't want no river to

consume me. I don't want no river to overwhelm me.

When Jesus is available to walk with me, to cross over,

to make a way, when I get out of the

way and I allow the Holy Spirit to lead the.

Way in our life.

Here's my prayer that God, if you parted the Red Sea,

you made away in the Jordan, you gave the Israelites.

Jericho, then I know you have something for me.

I may not know it yet, but I have the

faith to believe that I will.

Cross over to what you have for my life. Because

you and you alone are faithful.

Let's pray God, we are so grateful for Jesus tonight.

We are grateful for your word. God.

We are thankful God for your direction. We are thankful

Father for you leading every step of the way.

God.

So no matter where we are today, God, no matter

what river we may be facing, God, I pray that

we're stirred here a little bit more God, to have hope,

to know there is a promise on the other side,

and that if you are leading this, Oh God, then

there is provision along the way. So we ask you

God for the promise to come alive within our life.

God.

We invite the Holy Spirit to lead us in every way. God,

and we have trust and faith to believe that your

provision will overflow in our life. God, and every need

that needs to be met according to you God, and

your purpose and your will will be met because you

are a faithful, faithful God.

In your name, we pray in Jesus' name. Amen.

Can we give Jesus a praise this evening family for

his goodness.

We're gonna get ready to leave together.

It's really the most important part of the SERVI And

I'm just going to ask that you bow your heads

with me one more time, and I'm gonna ask everyone

just remain in your seats as we respect this moment

and those that are here.

It would be a shame for.

Us to talk about the goodness of God and talk

about God's promises and talk about God's presence and the

Holy Spirit, but not allow the opportunity for someone here

tonight to invite Jesus.

Into their life.

And you may be here and you've never had that opportunity,

but tonight's the night that.

You want to turn to Jesus and give him your life.

You've realized that what you've been doing and getting you nowhere,

you've tried it your way, you've tried it people's ways,

and you just realize, like.

God, I need Jesus. I'm here to tell.

You that Jesus loves you tonight and he desires to

wrap his arms around you, and he desires to comfort

you and be with you, and desires to spend eternity

with you. And his love is unconditional. But Jesus doesn't

like sin, and the only way to come to Jesus

and invite him into our life and to spend eternity

with him is when we come to him and reppent

of our sins.

And the way we do that is through a prayer.

And I'm gonna ask, if that's you tonight, that you

repeat after me through this prayer. And it's not the

prayer that saves you, but it's the posture of your heart.

In this moment.

Joshua desired the Israelites to posture their heart to draw

near to God. Right now, as you come to Jesus,

Jesus desires you to posture your heart towards him, and

as you invite him into your life. Today is going

to be the greatest decision that you will ever make,

because your life will be changed forever for the better

because of a loving savior who died on the cross

for you and I and our sins that we may

spend eternity with him. And so if that's you tonight,

I'm gonna ask you to say this prayer, but I'm

gonna ask all of us to.
