The Staff or the Spirit? || Pastor Adam Mesa

Praise God.

As we kind of conclude this series and next month,

starting next week, we jump into a new month and

a new series lean up to conference and after conference.

But as we conclude this series looking at Moses but

also expounding on at the movies, I'd love for us

to kind of read the passage that we shared today,

which is in Exodus chapter four, verse one of five.

You know I got to see last week with Pastor Aaron.

If you were here, I thought he just delivered a

phenomenal message Pastor Aaron last week, and I encourage it.

If you didn't listen to it, go back to our

YouTube channel and allow it to speak to you, because

I believe God will minister to you. Here we are

today in Exodus chapter four, verses one to five. If

you're ready, just five verses today, we'll stand for the

honor of reading scripture. If you're new to Patriot, the

reason why we stand is because reading God's word is

the highest honor that we can do in our life.

Is to give God his full attention in the word.

And so that's why we stand and we read scriptures together.

Here's what it says. Then Moses answered, but behold, they

will not believe me or listen to my voice, for

they will say the Lord did not appear to you.

The Lord said to him, what is in your hand?

He said, a staff, And he said, throw it on

the ground. So he threw it on the ground, and

it became a serpent, and Moses ran from it. But

the Lord said to Moses, put out your hand and

catch it by the tail. So he put out his

hand and caught it, and it became a staff in

his hand.

That they may believe that.

The Lord God, the God of their fathers, the God

of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God

of Jacob, has appeared to you. Amen, you may be seated.

I mean, that's just incredible. So you have Moses in

this passage. And if you've caught up with us over

the past couple weeks, we've kind of shared out of

chronicle logical order, kind of the life of Moses, and

we've shared about the life of Moses in the moments,

you know, starting the first week talking about how God

wrote with his finger the Law and the ten Commandments,

started authoring our story, and we visited moments, whether it

be the children of Israel, creating a golden calf to worship.

And here we are in Moses's life and we find ourselves.

He's at the burning Bush, which we shared about two

weeks ago, and there's a moment where God encourages Moses,

it's time to go back to Egypt. You gotta tell

Pharaoh to let my people go. Moses is eighty years

old by this time. For forty years he's been occupied

as a shepherd, working for his father in law, caring

for his father in laws, a state, essentially as a

Hebrew Man. And so he spent forty years as a

prince of Egypt. The last year as his Prince of Egypt,

he murdered an Egyptian soldier, and then he spends the

next forty years a simple shepherd. And he tells God,

at eighty years old, as a shepherd, if I go

to Egypt, what proof do I have? How do I

prove to the Israelites that you're sending me? And all

God asks some Moses as he says this, look at

what's in your hand now, If you and I are honest,

this is absolutely unimpressive in every way, like if you

walked into a room with me, and you said, hey,

we want you to do X, Y and Z, And

I go on whose authority and you point to the

stick on this authority, I'd be like, if you don't

get your crazy butt up out of here right now,

you're insane.

You got a stick, We can all.

Go to our backyard and find a stick. We can

all go to the top of a mountain and find

a stick. What's so special about your stick? And then

God tells Moses throat on the ground. He throws it

on the ground and immediately becomes a serpent. He says,

pick the stick back up. He picks the stick back up,

and immediately it's a staff again. What God did was

God put his favor, and God put his power, and

the spirit put.

Its discipline to the stick.

It turned the ordinary into something extraordinary.

And the beauty about God is God is not.

Looking for you and I to stand in an extraordinary

way or be an extraordinary person. It's willing to give

God what we possess. It's a willingness to give God

what's in our hand. And a lot of times you

may think it's nothing. It may just be a pen,

it may just be a piece of paper, It may

be a hammer, it may be a keyboard, it may

be a vehicle that you drive for work. But whatever

it is, it's what's in your hand. And God tells Moses,

throw it down and give it to me. And for

Moses as a shepherd's staff, this is what would have

led the sheep. This is what he would have used

to guide the sheep. But also this is what he

would have used for his strength. There's a story in

the Bible where God and the people and Joshua are

fighting and God tells Moses to lift his staff in

the air, and as long as his staff is in

the air, they'll win the battle. And at his old age,

he would get so tired that air and his brother

in law and her had to come to his sides

and lift his arm up so that they can maintain

the win of the battle.

It wasn't because the staff.

Was extraordinary, but it was the obedience to do what

God asks that was. It was his obedience with this

staff that he allowed God to do some incredible things.

The question we have today is what are you holding

on due strength? What do we hold on to leave?

What do we had to God? Because a lot of

times we will rely on this. But it's what God

wants to touch in your life. It's what God wants

to use in your life. If you're taking notes, the

first thing I want to encourage you with is that

we need to take a look at the object that

we have in our hand, the things God has entrusted

you with, the things God has allowed you to walk with.

You See, Moses had questions for God. What if they

don't believe me? What if they don't listen to me?

And God doesn't give Moses a lecture. He just asked

one question, what's in your hand? And God wants to

work with what you already carry, not with what you

wish you had, not what you saw somebody else with,

but what's already in your hand, That's.

What God wants to use.

I think so many times, even as a pastor and

a preacher, I think, well, I wish I could communicate

like that or what I especially get jealous of if

I if I meet pastors who can also sing to

It infuriates me because I think to myself, I could

be the worship team and the pastor. What a great

opportunity that would be. But again, that's not what I

have in my hand. In my hand, I have what

God's given me. And on top of what God's given me,

He's given me severe ADHD, which I have to deal

with every second of the day to stay attentive to

anyone's word. But that's in my hand. There's times I'd

look with people they didn't have ADHD and I said, well,

I wish I wish I had that. They seem like

they could pay attention. But also there's uniqueness that I have,

and there's uniqueness that you have. I can learn a

new trait in forty eight hours having ADHD. Someone who

don't have ADHD take them two years. But I also,

two days later won't have the discipline to keep doing.

It is what it is.

So we all got something we're working through, but we

have what's in our hand. In the Bible, David had

a sling. There was a woman in the.

Bible, a widow had just a jar of oil.

A little boy in the new Estimate had five loaves

and two fishes, and Moses had a stick. And so

many times the question isn't do you have enough? The

question is will you surrender what you already have. It's

so easy to live in insecurity it's so easy to

live in doubt, it's so easy to question ours. For question, God,

why did you make me this way? Why do I

struggle with this? Why do I have this? Why don't

I have that? Or we could be like Moses and.

Be like, I got a stick, What can you do

with that?

God?

This is the season I'm in. I have a stick?

Lord?

Is this enough?

It's enough if we surrender it.

It's enough.

If we allow him to touch it, it's enough if

we allow him to breathe on it. You know, it

makes me think of you know, Pastor Diego. He founded

our church in nineteen ninety four and a couple of

years ago seven about eight years ago. Now we started

this transition together and since last January been pastoring the church.

And believe it or not, me and my dad we'd

have regular conversations. Some of the conversations he and I

would have would be like, Dad, when you step out

as the senior pastor, what what is a fear of yours?

Is there a fear of yours? And he would say, yeah,

I think you know, he said, I've been in full

time ministry for forty years. He said, all I've ever

known was pastoring this church for thirty years, he said,

I kind of have an insecurity that like maybe I

won't be needed as much anymore, or or maybe I'm

past my prime and so I won't have the energy

to do the things that I used to enjoy, he said.

Or you know what will happen is I'm good with

another man leading the church that I founded. But he said,

but at the same time, like what if I don't

get a preach anymore? I love sharing God's word, and

we would walk through all those insecurities. Now I've been

on staff here for close to fourteen years, and one

of the things I know that's always been one of

Pastor Diego's dreams that just never seemed to kind of

take foot was he always wanted to like kind of

father young young men. He wanted to pour specifically into

young pastors that lead churches. And we would over the years,

I would, as my pastor of be like, hey, let

me let me put some feelers out, let me see

if And so for close like thirteen years, just like

nothing took off the ground, nothing took off.

And so recently a friend of.

Mine who leads this, uh, this kind of movement, who

he brings in some of the most influential Christian leaders,

businessman and pastors, and he brings them into one room

for three days and they just pour into each other

and they spend time together. I mean they're from Atlanta

to Florida, to Texas, to Midwest to Canada and all

these other places. And he said, hey, do you think

that your dad would want to share? And I think

I said, yeah, absolutely, my dad would would want to share.

This just happened this past week. And so what happened

was there were some moments I want to share with you.

I got a picture of it. I don't know if

I got to walk over here to share it. Do

you guys have it side by side by chance or

if not, give me the other picture. So the first

thing was I interviewed Pastor Diego in the room about

thirty years of ministry. We talked about his cancer journey.

But what happened was is Pastor Diego started talking about

his recent restoration with his father. One of the things

Pastor Diego said was he said, I don't know why

I'm sixty four years old and I still get around

my dad and I turn into a little boy that

just wants to be approved. He's in his eighties. He said,

I don't know what I do that, but I've just

had to give that over to God. And so what

happened was as we started talking authentically. The next moment,

which is the next picture, is we had a moment

during worship. If y'all can give me the next picture, guys,

the next moment, the next moment is there's guys at

the altar leaning down who we said, if you want

to be del livered from Father, wounds come up, and

we're gonna believe God that he can break those chains.

And so a bunch of men who pastor churches, who

lead businesses, they came up.

And they receive prayer.

Why do I say that, because this moment and what

was shared is only something a man with gray hair

could earn. This is something only a man with forty

years of ministry and thirty years of leading a trial.

I con man, these guys love me, but I'm their age.

I ain't seen enough, i ain't done enough, i ain't

lived enough. I'm not shepherded long enough to be able

to pastor that moment. But a man who a year

ago thought I wonder if anyone would ever still listen

to me. I wonder if anyone would still let me

speak into their life. I've had a dream to pour

into young men. And he sit with sixty if some

of the most influential Christian leader men in America. And

I was talking to my dad and I said, you

had what none of us had in the room you

at age. So many times we think to ourselves, I

don't got nothing that's impressive. I don't have anything. I'm

past my expiration day. Or going to college is too

beyond me. Or practicing a new trade is beyond me.

Or moving into a new seasoners beyond me. Or walking

towards a healthy marriage, I think that's beyond me. Or

having kids that love the Lord that might be beyond me.

I'll tell you this, it's not nothing is too beyond

that God can't touch if we're willing to lay it

like Moses did. God said, Moses, take the staff out

of your hand and lay it on the holy ground.

It's amazing how in our own selves we can get

to a moment where we question what God can do.

But I just think of this past week, and I

was so honored as a son to say, wow, forty

years of ministry. God is answering a prayer that a

man has had since he was twenty years old, that

God is letting him see at sixty four years old.

I think to myself, what else are we leaving on

the table that God can do? Because we're not willing

to step out and allow God to touch it. We're

not willing to lay it at the foot of christ

Oswald Chambers said this God can achieve his purpose either

through the absence of a power of the human power

or the abandonment of the reliance on it. In other words,

God can do something with or without us, but he

could do something with you if you step out of

the way and you say, God, use me. I don't

rely on these things. We could take a staff without

God's touch. This is just a stick without God's favor.

This is just I can give this to anyone and

they could throw it on the ground and be like,

where's the snake? Or they could lift it up in

the air and be like, why can't I win a battle?

Or they could go in front of an ocean and

put it in the ocean, say why doesn't it split? Well,

because you're relying on the stick. Moses wasn't relying on

the stick. He was relying on God. And when he

was relying on God, God could use the stick. And

so I want you to see point two, greet. What

can happen is there can become an obsession with power.

If not treated correctly.

We could look at someone's gifting, we could look at

what God is doing in someone's life. We can look

at Moses, and we could look at the stick, and

we could say, if I.

Just go and steal that stick from Moses, I can do.

What he can do. Or if I just level up

like that person, I.

Can do what they do.

Or or if I just get in the room, or

I just get the opportunity, I can do what I'm

comparing in someone else. But the reality is, if you

and I are children of God, the powers not in

the stick, the powers in the hand of God. And

the hand of God touched this stick when Moses had it.

That's the beauty of zachariathh. Four to six. Like I shared,

then he said, this is the.

Word of the Lord of Zurubil, not by my nor

by power, but by my spirit, says the Lord of Host,

which means you can't force it.

You can't prod it.

In anyone else's hands, this is just a stick, but

in God's hands it is so much more. In God

touching it. That's like the difference between two types of

swords right here. Don't worry. This is dull, it's a

it's a it's for show. But I got two swords

right here. I got a rubber sword and I got

a physical sword. Now, if I all of a sudden

passed you this rubber sword and I was like, let's

do it, you'd be like, hold on, we got to

talk about this for a second, because what I have

is ineffective and what you have is effective. And a

lot of times we have to get in the mindset

of not comparing or desiring the things that are tools,

but desiring the one who can bless your tools, the

one who can sharpen your tools. The Word. The Bible

says that the Word of God is sharper than any

two edged sword.

It can cut through anything.

So God's hand can push through anything, can favor anywhere.

And a lot of times we just think, if I

just get my hands on anything, then I can do it.

But you can't with something like this in the same

way without God's touch. This becomes something that's effective. This

becomes and we can live in deception thinking that there's

no difference between these two swords.

We could live in deception to just say, hey, if I.

Just get the right thing and the right tool, I

can do something great for it. But is it surrendered

to God? Is it sharpened by God? Have you given

it in a sacrifice to the Lord? Have you said, Lord,

these are your gifts, these are your tools? Or we

have allowed the enemy to say, yeah, just get the

thing that you need and you'll be all right. You'll

be able to get in there, you'll be able to

handle it. When I was younger, my oldest brother Nathan,

we in a like probably nine, nineteen ninety five or six.

We moved somewhere and I was, you know, I was

very young. And what happened was is because my two

older brothers were older and closer, my parents said, hey,

you guys are gonna share a room, and then Adam's

gonna have his own room. And I'm the youngest, and

I'm younger than Nathan by five years. So Nathan didn't

like that. So first Nathan asks and he says, hey,

can I get your room? And I said, no, I

want my own room. And then he comes back. And

you remember those little like metal like impression toys that

you like, can put your hand in or you put

your face in, and then it imprints on the other side.

It's like a dull nail and you can imprint. So

he comes to me and he says, if you give

me your room, I'll give you this toy. And I

go ooh, deal, and so I take. I trade a

whole bedroom, and like six or seven years old, I trade.

He's like thirteen or fourteen. I trade a whole bedroom

so that he could. He gives me this little metal toy.

And at the time I think I came up. I

think I won.

Man.

I was like, you got nothing, you got an empty room.

I didn't know because I was young. I didn't know

you get to fill the room with things.

That you like.

Because our previous house we all three shared a room,

so I didn't know that when you get a room,

you can customize your own room. So here he is,

I'm with this little metal toy, and he's in there.

I mean he's putting posters up, he's putting new sheets up,

and I'm like, and I'm walking past, and I'm like playing,

put my hand, put it on my face, and he.

Sets his room up.

In like an hour later, I see his room, and

you know, like any kid, I'm already bored with the

metal toy. And so I go back and I say, no,

I want to I'm bored. I want to trade it back,

and he goes, you can't trade it back.

And I look at my mom and dad.

I said, Mom, they tricked me, he says, and my parents,

who man, my parents. We did live in a strict household,

but we did live in a household that teaches you

that like your yes is your yes, and your no

is your no. And so my parents they go, will

you agree to it? So it's yours? And I remember

walking away so deceived because he convinced me that this

shiny toy was worth more than having my own room.

And what happens a lot of times is what the

enemy will do is he will make things shine, he

will make things glitz, he will make things look so impressive.

He will make gifts look so impressive, he will make

promotions look so amazing. He will make all And then

what we'll do is we'll say, man, I'll trade anything

I'll trade space with God, I'll face favor with God.

I'll trade a touch from God.

Because this this thing looks fun and this thing looks shiny.

But all those things they get old and they get

dated and they get tiring. And then there's a point

where we need to be able to go to God

and say, God, I know I traded the wrong things,

but I'm here too make you my priority. That's the

beauty about God is He's always available for you and

I to come and say, I may have had my

priorities out of whack, I may have lived in insecurity.

I may have said yes to something too soon, But Lord,

would you forgive me? And God says that he forgets,

immediately forgets your transgressions. When you and I ask the

Lord to forgive us, he immediately forgives, and he immediately

gives us his hand. What we have to do is

recognize that we desperately need God's spirit and we desperately

need a touch of God.

We have to remain focused that it's.

Not about the glitz, it's not about the glamour, but

it's about the spirit of God moving a w Tozer

said it like this, and it challenge all of us.

It challenges me. He says, if the Holy Spirit was

withdrawn from the church today, ninety five percent of what

we do would go on and no one would know

the difference. In other words, he said, we are so

relyingt on things that the Spirit of God isn't always

active in that if he was there or not, would

we even know? Would we know the spirit of God

is in our marriage? Would we know the spirit of

God is in our household? Would we know the spirit

of God is in our worship? Would we know the

spirit of God as in we reach scripture? Or is

it just another day? Another day watching TV and house,

another day cooking dinner, another day hanging out with friends,

another day watching football? Or is it in all things

we do it's worship to God. That God is in

the kitchen, God is in the living room, The spirit

of God is in your car as you drive, He's

in your workplace, in your breakroom, and he's in here.

But I would just pray we'd get to a place

that we don't automate our relationship with God.

We don't automate the things of God. But instead we.

Say, Lord, I want a sharp sword. I want to

be able to cut through the things that I need

to cut through. I want to be able to recognize

if my sword is rubber or not. I want to

be able to know if my walk with you is

effective or if it's not. And the only way we

can do this by allowing the third point, as we

begin to close, we can allow we can see God

do that when we do this, when we allow the

outpouring of God's spirit over our life, allow God to

pour his spirit and his presence on you. Tewo Corinthians

four seven says we have this treasure in jars of

clay to show that this is all surpassing power is

from God and not us. You see, I want to

show you this today. I got this little jar. I

think one of the first questions is if let's just

say you had something I wanted to barter with and

I said, hey, you know, hey, I would like what

you have. Would you would you like to trade it?

First question is your first instinct would be that thing's ugly.

I don't want to trade anything. Let's just say you

had something a value. You had a handbag, a necklace,

you know, a wallet that was really nice material, or

a car and I was like, hey, you, uh, you

want to trade my jar for what you have? You'd

be like, no, come on, it's You'd be like no.

And then if I kept pushing it, I was like,

you really want this, you really want this. Eventually you'd

be like, what's in the jar? What's in the jar?

And what If I answered you and I said, oh,

only two thousand diamonds, You'd be like, oh, well, hold on,

let me, hold on, hold on, you want my purse

two thout, man, hold on, they're real diamonds. Then I like,

lab grown right now, they're real diamonds, two thousand of them.

You'd be like, oh wow, yeah, okay, I'll take now.

Mind you, you wouldn't care how the jar looked at

that point. You wouldn't cared. Like if I were like,

do you want me to polish this jar up, You're

like no. All I'm gonna do is use what's on

inside of it. I'm not worried about what's on the

outside of it. I don't care if it's chipped, I

don't care if it's deemed I don't care if it

needs a new paint job. The reality is what's inside

of it is more valuable than the way that it looks,

and the apostle Paul says, and tewod Corinthian's what we

just read is he said, you and I are like

jars of clay, because if you and I weren't like

jars of clay, we would be consumed with our appearance,

and we would think that would give value to God,

that that would bike us believable about God's presence, that

that would give us more favor. And he says this, no, no, no, no,

God has poured out his spirit inside of you so

that you and I could be jars of clay. That

may be impressive on the outside, that may have some scars,

and we may have some bruises, and we may have

some broken relationships, and we may have some hurts, and

we may have some past we may have a testimony,

But what is inside of it, the spirit of God

is far more valuable then what's on the inside, then

what's on the outside. So someone may look at you

one day and say you don't look impressive. Someone may

look at you and say, why I hear this all

the time I'm out in the city, and they're like,

I thought you'd be taller, Adam, Mike, Well, I'm not

you look different than what I've seen on stage. I'm like,

that doesn't matter. Maybe I could be taller, maybe I

could be smarter, Maybe I could not have adhd Maybe

Pastor Diego could not have any more gray hair anymore.

Maybe maybe he's this, maybe he's a maybe I'm this. Maybe,

But guess what really doesn't matter. What's on the outside

really doesn't matter. How good your jar looks. You can

put you can pelt paint on it, you can paint

your nails, you can get new teeth, you can you

can get a new head of hair, you can read

your whole body. But guess what, It still deteriorates at

some point. It steals a jar at some point. And

we may want a care and it's okay to say, oh,

I want to polish myself up and I want to

look good and presentable. But the reality is, at the

end of the day, is that God wants us to

focus far more than what we fill this life up with.

What you fill this body up with, the presence of God,

the word of God, the worship of God, the obedience

to God, far more than the appearance. That's what Second

Corinthians all about. Because it's easy to experience life and

feel like you get beat up, feel like you get

scarred and chip. But what Paul says is he says,

focus on your inside.

Your value is in.

The very God who's created the heavens and the earth

lives inside of you. The very power of God that

raised Jesus Christ from the dead lives in you. When

you and I receive Jesus, we receive all of God

and so our weakness, our bodies. It isn't a liability.

It's a platform for God's strength. The cracks in your

clay are proof the power is not yours. Zachari four

six once again says not by might, not by power,

but by my spirit. And we know that God, being

the author of our story, has written our story. And

we know a couple of weeks ago that Jesus is

the stronger man that can break your chains. And now

the spirit of God empowers you and I to live

in the fullness of God. So I want to encourage

you today. Don't just lean on the prop that you use.

You know a lot of us. We could look at

all these movies that we watch and Spider Man and

Marvel movies and Iron Man and Thor and be like, Oh,

if I had a hammer, if I had webs, if

I had this, if I had that, I could do

so much more. But the reality is everything that you

have God has given you. It's not about going and

creating something new. It's about reevaluating, saying, Lord, what I

have is yours.

I lay it down.

I lay it down for you, and I allow God

to use what's in my hand and say, God, this

belongs to you.

My life is for your glory.

And it's not based off your strength but by the

power of the living God that lives inside of you.

Let's pray today God. We just pray Lord, today as

we come and gather for your word, Lord, that we

fully surrender to you God. I pray that as we're

in this place, Lord, we would live in obedience Lord,

to not compare. Not to look at what's in someone's

left hand or right hand, or in someone's else's possessions,

not a look at other things that people may be

good at or qualified for. But would we look internally Lord,

to say, God, whatever it is that I have is

full of yours. Whatever it is that you need, Lord,

I surrender it in this place to you today, Father God,

Today Lord, we all look to the heavens. We look

to you, Lord. We surrender to your spirit.

God.

Would you use us today? God? Could we lay all

things at your alter, Lord, so that you could touch it,

so that you could bless it. And I pray if

there's anyone in this room that has never confessed Jesus

Christ as their personal Lord and savior. One day we

will all stand before God. The Bible encourage us through

the Gospels that one day we will stand before God.

And those that will receive the fullness of the relationship

with God will be the ones that believe that Jesus

Christ died on the cross and rose three days later.

I know there are individuals in this room, in the

cafe courtyard online who are thinking to themselves, I do

not have a relationship with God. Well, the first step

is a relationship with Jesus to believe that he died

on the cross and he rose for you. It starts

with faith to say, God, I fully surrender to you

in the way that you surrender, Say Jesus, I receive

your mercy that you died for me and you rose

for me. So, if you're here in this place and

you're ready to take a step of faith towards Christ

today and trust Jesus as your Lord and savior. Would

you repeat this along with me? Would you say, dear

Lord Jesus, in this place, I confess you as my

Lord and my savior. I believe in my heart that

you rose from the grave, and from this day forward

I choose to follow you for the rest of my

days in Jesus's name. Amen. Hey, I'm gonna do one

thing just so we can celebrate with you. If you're

here today and you said that prayer for the first

time or the last time, then I want to encourage you.

On the counter, three, would you raise your hand if

you say you know what today was the day that

I made a decision to follow Jesus. All I ask

is you raise your hand so that we can welcome

you into the family of God. Patrea means family, but

more than family, it's family that has received Jesus as

their savior. So we want to welcome you to the

family today. If that was you on the counter, three,

would you raise your hand?

Two, one two, three? Would you raise your hand up

high if you gave it?

Hey, congratulations, welcome to the family.

I see all that. Hey, I see you too, my

friends right there, just know that you may be raising

your hand and this may feel like a first decision,

but there's a lot of people that love you and

have prayed for this moment for you. There's a grandmother,

there's an uncle, there's a brother, there's a sister, there's

a coworker that specifically had you on their mind, and

so all of Heaven is rejoicing from that decision today. Hey,

as we leave here in just a few moments, if
