He Commands the Blessing | Joshua 21:1-45 | Pastor Joel Holm

Speaker for tonight. He is no he's no stranger. He's family.

So let's stand to our feet and let's welcome one

of my favorite people on the planet, Pastor Joel Holme.

Hey, stay standing for a second, Willy, you don't sit

down yet. I am really, really glad that you are here,

and I want you to have a prepared heart and

a prepared mind, because I think God wants to surprise

you tonight. I have been in the Book of Joshua

alongside of you all year, and I have been teaching

the Word of God for forty two years. And as

I was preparing for tonight and any kind of the

passages that was assigned me, God surprised me. I don't

surprise easily, but we have to have a heart of

expectation for what God wants to share with us. And

I know many of us came in here tonight and

there is a need that we have. Some of us

don't even know how to describe what the need is,

but we know it's there. And knowing the passage we're

gonna study, I can tell you that from the incredible

testimony of healing to the worship service, God has set

you up because he wants to give you an insight

into who he is that might surprise you and position

you to receive what he has for you. So we're

gonna read the word, and then I'm gonna pray, and

then we're gonna jump into it. So let's keep standing

for the reading of the word. It comes from Joshua,

chapter twenty one. It'll be on the screens starting in

verse one. Now the family heads of the Levites approached

Elias of the priest Joshua, son of Nunn, and the

heads of the other tribal families of Israel at Shiloh

and Gaana, and said to them, the Lord commanded through Moses,

that you have us towns to live in with pastors

for our livestock. So as the Lord had commanded, the

Israelites gave the Leevites the following towns and pasture lands

out of their own inheritance. Now we jumped down to

forty three of the same chapter. So the Lord gave

Israel all the land he had sworn to their ancestors,

and they take possession of it and settled there. The

Lord gave them rest on every side, just as he

had worn to their ancestors, not one of their enemies

withstood them. The Lord gave all their enemies into their hands.

Not one of all the Lord's goods promises to Israel failed.

Everyone was fulfilled. Let's pray, Lord, we take you at

your word, and I pray, Spirit of God, that you

would speak to each person here, very clearly, very uniquely,

that you would give us an insight into your character,

into your nature, and you would raise our eyes and

raise our faith to know the kind of God that

you are to us. I thank you for each person here,

for those watching online, surprise us by your word. Over

these next few minutes, we pray in the name of Christ,

and everybody said, Amen, Amen, you may be sleep seated.

The whole point of this chapter in the Old Testament

is to give us a picture and an understanding not

just of God's blessings and his promises, but to give

us a picture and an understanding of God himself and

who he is. And from the very beginning, the one

insight that you got to get a hold of that

is a little peculiar is it says this that God

commands blessing. They make it clear to the leaders. The

leaders understand this. When it says the Lord commanded through Moses.

He doesn't just offer it. He doesn't just suggest it.

He doesn't just say it might be available. Work hard

enough or believe hard enough. When it comes to the

blessings of God, he commands them. He dictates them. You see,

his blessings are not just bonus material while we're on

this earth. His blessings are not just kind of extra

benefit to make life easier and more convenient for us.

His blessings the thing you are really crying out to

the Lord for, whatever that may be. His blessings are

an inherent part of His plan for you and for

this earth. So he says, I'm gonna command this. There's

a psalm in one point thirty three that says, where

there is unity, God commands blessing. Now stop and think

about this idea. I'm a dad. I have three grown children.

They all love God. They're now married, they have their

own kids. And when they were grade school kids, I

was the dad in the home and I loved my kids,

but I was the dad he gave commands. I gave,

you know, directives to my children. One of the directives

was you will do your homework. One of the directives

one of the commands I gave you will honor your mother.

I don't ever remember commanding blessing. Being a dad that

says I am commanding blessing on you. My kids would

have freaked out. They're going, what does that mean. We

understand the commands as to how we should obey, We

understand the commands as to the pattern of our life,

and we know that if we obey then there is

some residual effect. But that's not what this chapter teaches.

This chapter teaches in the very nature and identity of God.

As much as he commands you to be holy, as

much as he commands you to tithe, he commands you

to be blessed. Now that's a strange thought. He is

commanding this. And he went to the Israelis and said, listen,

I am commanding this. Why because he commands it? Because

behind all the blessings of God there is this purpose.

It's not just about being blessed for yourself. Every time

God answers your prayer, every time his blessing comes on you,

there is a purpose behind that. They're like sign posts,

the Bible teaches. They direct people somewhere. They direct you somewhere.

And the reason why This passage is so important to us.

It kind of elevates our faith and make us look

at God differently. He is not a god we need

to beg to. He is not a god we need

to panic around to. He is a god we come

to in confidence with our requests because we know this.

He is a God who blesses because it's part of

his plan. The blessing that he has for you is

part of a plan, and he wants to command it

over you so that you can walk in the plan

that He has for you. And you're going, why is

it not here? Then we'll get to that, but it

begins with understanding his character, his identity, and how these

blessings really work and why he commands them. So, for example,

there is a promise in the Bible, a promise of healing,

physical healing for you through the Cross, mental healing for you,

healing of your soul. There is this promise that God

wants to command healing over you. But there's a picture

behind it because when you watch that testimony and you

see a man who is now physically healed, it gives

you an insight into the creator God and his beauty

and his genius. It gives you a picture into his

identity that he created us, and of course he wants

us to be whole. It gives you a picture into eternity.

Do you know that God loves the body, He loves matter.

He loves the body so much he created it, created

you with this body. And he loves the body so

much that when he created your body, he made you

male and female in his image. He loves the body

so much that he took one on for himself. He

loves the body so much that when he says in eternity,

when this earth is gone and we are in that

final stage in eternity, you will not be an avatar.

You will not be a vapor. You will have a body.

It will be a glorified body, but you will have

a body. That is his plan. How does he give

a picture of that plan? Now, he heals you, and

you walk in health, and you walk in wholeness, and

your mind is clear and your soul is clear, and

you're walking in this healing and joy and faith, and

it is a picture. He commands the blessing of healing,

because there is a purpose in your wholeness being a

picture to your family members and your coworkers, and your

neighbors and yourself. There's a promise in the Bible about peace.

We live in a world of conflict, conflict that happens

in the family, conflict that happens in the neighborhood, conflict

that happens in the nation. And he says, I'm gonna

command a blessing of peace on you. Pastor Sanas talked

about where you won't be anxious anymore, you will have

this peace. Why does he command that because there's a

purpose behind it. When you are not anxious and you

have peace, do you know what you do? You make

really good decisions. When you are anxious and you do

not have peace, do you know what you do? You

make really bad decisions. And Christians who make good biblically

based decisions bring glory and honor to God because you prosper,

you flourish. Christians who make bad decisions, they're not such

good pr for God because you don't flourish and you

don't prosper. So he says, I am commanding the blessing

of peace on you because I want you to be

able to make the most God filled biblical decisions you

can make about your life. To be fully obedient and

watch it flourish. And you go, oh, that's why he

commands a blessing. He doesn't just suggest it just to

offer it. Now, this is part of his plan. I

am commanding that you walk in my blessing. There is

a promise in the Bible. Along with peace, along with healing,

there's a promise that we are supposed to flourish in

our life. That means that you're supposed to walk in

a measure of prosperity. However you want that defined, you

walk in this measure of prosperity. Why why would God

command this blessing where he says, I really care about

your financial wellbeing. I really really care about it because

there's a purpose behind it. God knows that if your

money is messed up, you are messed up. If you

don't have it, you're messed up. If you have it

and use it wrong, you're messed up. So he says,

I'm going to command this blessing. The blessing is on finances. Now.

It doesn't mean he's just up there with a lot

of money wanting to dump it on anybody. But he's

very involved in your life. And he's not just involved

in your life as a father who disciplines. He's not

just involved in your life as somebody who gives you directives.

He's involved in your life, says saying, I want to

give you some commandments. I want to command you this,

and I want you to command you this. But I'm

going to command blessing on you. Now all of us

would go, I'm in, Yes, absolutely, I am fully in.

But the story doesn't just say that, as Sana says,

it gives us a little bit more supporting truth. How

do I walk in what God commands in? What is

his will? And what is his desire? And what is

his commands? And this story gives us what I call

three supporting truths Now, this is where we have a

role in walking what He is commanding. Three things you

got to really learn. First, one is this god fulfills

his word. You have to know that. You have to

trust that, you have to believe that god fulfills his word. Now,

for those of you who are skeptics out there, I

didn't say god fulfills his word in the twelve seconds

you ask him to fulfill his word in it says

this in the story, not one promise failed. All were fulfilled. Actually,

you want to know something about God and the nature

of God. It is impossible for God not to fulfill

his word, because then he's not God anymore. His word

is perfect, his word is true. His word is who

he is. So here's the unique thing about God. If

I tell you i'm gonna do something, I speak it out,

like I'm gonna help you out and I'm gonna move

you know, your stuff for you on Saturday when you

move houses, I speak it out. I give you that promise,

But then I got to show up and do it right.

My word is just an echo of what I've got

to do. Not with God, when he spoke, the very

words made it happen. He said, let there be light.

There was light. He didn't say, hey, there's gonna be light,

and then he goes and makes it. His word is

so powerful that just speaking it makes it happen. Let

the stars be. There are the stars. His word is

the power, his word is the true, And so he says,

not one promise failed. His word was completely fulfilled. Here's

the deal. Though God commands blessing, his word is always fulfilled,

but waiting is part of fulfilling his word. Tewod Peter

three nine puts it this way. The Lord is not

slow in keeping this promise, as some understand slowness. Instead,

he is patient with you. I hate this verse. I

know I shouldn't I'm a pastor. But God is saying, Joel,

it's your problem, not mine. I'm actually waiting for you.

I'm ready to command blessing you in your life. I'm

the one who's having to be patient because I am

waiting for you to position yourself where I can really

see that manifested. Let me give you the example of this.

Here's the wrong idea we have. You've ever been to

the doctor's I had to go to the doctor's office.

I don't know about your doctor and your doctor's office.

And if you're a doctor, please forgive me. But I

call up the doctor. I got to see my doctor.

I make a two o'clock appointment. This information is completely

meaningless to my doctor, means nothing to them. Whatsoever. I

show up at five to two means nothing. There is

a waiting room full of people. They know they're gonna

be late. They have the gall to literally call it

the waiting room. They don't even they're not even subtle

about it. You are going to wait. We're gonna call

this a waiting room. We're gonna put magazines that are

ten years old for you to read, because you will

be here ten years from now, waiting to see the doctor.

You got one of those doctors. I have one of

those doctors. I show up and I'm in the waiting

room waiting for the doctor. Now I know there's a doctor.

I know he's doing stuff. He's back there in those rooms.

This is how we see God. I'm in a waiting

room and he's back there, and I know he exists,

and I know he's treating other people, but I'm in

a waiting room. And then what happens is the nurse

pokes her or his head out the door and they're

gonna call a name, and everybody in the waiting room goes,

and you hope to God it's your name. They call,

and they call the person next to you, and you're

back to People magazine, nineteen eighty nine. And this is

how we see God. When will he call my name?

Because he just called this person's name, And God says,

that is not the accurate picture. I'm the one being

patient with you, and waiting is part of fulfilling Are

you ready for the blessing of God? Are you really

ready for it? Because in this passage of Joshua, this

is a story of God's redemptive plan for all of humanity,

and he's using a nation and they go through decades

of wandering and captivity. Now and they're into the promised land.

And we've navigated the story all year. It's like, are

you ready for this? Because you have been waiting. Waiting

is not passive, because what happens to you while you

wait is what positions you to have that blessing commanded

over you. Remember, the Bible says they that wait upon

the Lord will renew their strength. Now that's messed up,

isn't it. They that receive the blessing will renew their strength. No, no, No.

Scripture says, when you wait and you know how to wait,

and you know what waiting is all about, and it's

not passive, and it's positioning yourself. And you're saying, God,

purify my heart, purify my mind, position me, build my faith.

There is a strength that he will give you even

before the blessing comes, even before the promise comes. Where

is a strength that he will give you? It prepares

you what happens to you while you wait, believe it

or not, sometimes is actually more powerful than even receiving

it after you wait. But you have to have this

kind of a mindset going into you. God fulfills his

word is the supporting truth around. He commands a blessing,

but in fulfilling his word, he is patient with you.

Aren't you grateful that God is willing to wait. He's

willing to wait for me to kind of clean some

things up so that I can really receive his blessing

and not get spoiled by it. He is willing to

wait so I can reposition my faith. I'm so grateful

that God is patient with me and never stops engaging

with me. And some of you are here, and you

know that you were wanting and you've got this prayer request.

But this passage is teaching us something. You got to know.

God fulfills his word, But be grateful that he's the

one who has been waiting for you. Then there's kind

of a second supporting truth in that, and that is

God requires you to take possession. Now this may seem obvious,

but think about it for a second. So here's the story. Okay,

God commanded this blessing on us. We want this blessing.

And they said, okay, you got to go take possession

of it. If I give you a Christmas present and

you go, wow, thank you for the Christmas present and

you put it on the shelf, you never open it.

You have no idea what present I gave you and

how it could change your life. So there is this

principle throughout all of scripture that God commands a blessing,

but you have got to take possession. The story says

they took possession of it. You must receive what God

gives you. How do you do that? Because we just

naturally think, oh, I'll just hang out when it comes Hurrah.

There's a story in said Kings where God where there's

a you know, there's no water, there's no rain, and

God says, I'm gonna bring rain. But here's what you

need to do. Dig ditches. Because if you dig ditches

through the valley, when the rain comes, it's not gonna

run off hard ground. You'll be able to store it,

you'll be able to use it. So he's telling them

my blessing will come, but my blessing will come only

when you dig the ditches and are ready for my

blessing and to be able to really steward it well.

And he's like saying, I am gonna command a blessing,

but are you in a place to steward that where

you really are saying, Okay, I'm gonna ask for this blessing.

Remember when Jacob wrestles the Angel of the Lord. It's

this wild story where Jacob says, I'm not gonna let

you go until you bless me. You go, oh, where's

the humility in that? But he knew who his God was.

He goes, no, I'm gonna make you. I'm gonna make

you bless me because God commands this blessing, but you

gotta be prepared for it. Let me give you a

couple of very practical examples of what it looks like.

You may be here and you may be younger, and

you went, wow, I really want this blessing of what

is my life purpose? What am I supposed to do

with my life? What job? What vocation? I feel like

I'm just kind of wandering around and God saying I

want to command a blessing of purpose over you, but

you got to take possession of it. And the only

way you can take possession of God's blessing. A purpose

in your life is You've got to be in a

place where you are so secure in your identity with Jesus.

You are just so secure in who He is in

you that you don't have any wrong motivation of saying,

give me a career that will make me really look

good and significant. You already look good and already are

fully significant in Christ. And when you are there, he goes, oh,

now you're a ready for the blessing I'm commanding you.

And he gives you all this purpose and all this

significance because you don't need it, because you have it

in Christ. So you say, how can I be ready

for the blessing he wants to command over me? Find

your identity in Christ with such a security that there

will be a joy and a freedom in whatever purpose

he gives you, because your identity is rooted in Him.

Maybe you're here moms and dads or husbands and wives,

and you're going if I just had a blessing, command

a blessing in my family, I want my family to prosper.

And it seems that were going through rough waters and

there's just all these bumps in the road and there's conflict.

Command my family to blessing, and God says, I'm gonna

command your family to blessing. But you got to take

possession of it. And do you know how you take

possession of it? Dad's lead your home by serving your

children and your wife. Serve them lives. Serve your children,

serve your husband. When you are in a family and

you are serving and sacrificing and giving yourself to each other,

you are positioning. That's like taking possession. I promise you

you shift from how do I get what I need

out of this relationship to how do I give into

this relationship. God will command a blessing over you, and

all you are dreaming of will come to pass. But

you've got to receive that blessing in that way you

may be hearing. You go, Joel, none of that's me.

What's me is I just I have this gray cloud

just hangs over my head. And God commands a blessing

of joy because a witness to the world is not

crabby Christians. A witness to the world is joy filled,

happy Christians, full of life. And you're going, that's the

blessing I want. I want, and I know he wants

to command it. How do you take possession of the

blessing of joy? Begin to live your life with gratitude.

When you become grateful, when you wake up every morning

and go, this is the day that the Lord has made.

I have breath in my lungs. I am grateful. All

of a sudden, Now there is a blessing of joy

that begins to pour into you. But you gotta take

possession of the blessing of God, and you do it

by your acts of faith. According to scripture, the most

obvious one anybody here would love of financial blessing. God

commands a financial blessing. How do I take possession of it?

It got to be a good steward. Here's why God

loves you too much to give you anything that will

mess you up. And if you are not a good steward,

a million bucks will mess you up. They recently did

a survey of people who won the lottery. Sixty five

percent of these people said they wish they had never won.

It destroyed their family, it destroyed their lives. They weren't

ready for it. So you take possession of a financial

blessing He is commanding by being a good steward, and

God goes, oh, I can trust them, Oh yeah, I

can fully bless them now, and this will fulfill the

purpose of what I need for the church. God he

commands a blessing, and he does that because he fulfills

his word. He requires you to take possession. And then

the story adds this other wrinkle that's so important. It

says the Lord gave them rest on every side. It's

one thing when life creates stress. It's another thing when

your faith creates stress. And sometimes being a christ follower

can create a lack of rest. What am I supposed

to do? I got to read my Bible? Oh yeah,

I gotta pray. Oh yea, I'm supposed to be Oh oh,

I gotta tee it. Yeah, And all of a suden,

there's a lot I gotta do these things. And then

I didn't do this, and tomorrow I'll do that, and

I didn't. Oh I got to serve, And all of

a sudden, there is all this build up of intensity

and the whole idea of rest just does not seem

to define our faith. And yet in this story, in

giving a picture of God commanding blessing, inherent in that

is this line that says, part of walking in the

blessing of God is God gives rest. And here's why.

The blessings of God that he wants to command into

your life, that he will fulfill his word, that you've

got to take possession of. So you got to position

yourself those blessings. They are like a portal into eternity.

The blessings of God are not just for your ease

and convenience. He's a father who loves you, so he

wants to take care of you. But there's a great

purpose going on here. One of the very first miracles

of the New Testament Church in the Book of Acts

was this lame man at the temple. Peter goes up

there and he says, what I have I give you,

and the guy gets healed, and it says he goes

leaping and dancing into the temple, which is a direct

quote from Isaiah, who is prophesying about heaven and eternity.

And this miracle is a picture of how we will

be in eternity with the Lord leaping and dancing with them.

And every miracle you trace through scripture and even our lives,

they are portals into eternity. And the reason why this

picture is there is that the blessings of God are

something that create for us rest, a picture of peace

and rest. And I know tonight there are some of

you that are here and rest has not been on

the schedule for a while. But when you read through

the Bible in creation seventh Day, God rested, It wasn't tired.

He was teaching a pattern of life. In the Old Testament,

there was the Sabbath rest take a day. Why take

a day? Call it holy? Why because you need a vacation. No,

because I want to give you a picture of heaven,

and one day a week, I want you to remember

what heaven looks like, what eternity looks like. That's why

you have a Sabbath day, because this is a picture

and a reminder. No, this six days is not what

it's all about. That seventh Day, that's what is all about.

Then you get into Eternity a book of Hebrews. There

is this rest that we're given to us, and all

of the blessings and all the miracles all picture and

point us towards. We do not live for this world,

and God commands blessings over us in this world as

a picture of the world to come. Because there will

be one day when you will not stress over money anymore.

There will be one day when you will have a

new body. There will be one day when your mind

will be clear. There will be one day when all

the relationships will be reconcile. So he says, I'm going

to command the blessing now as a picture of the future.

So now you can have this rest. You came here

tonight and you go, God, I need from you, I

really need from you. And he hears that. He truly

hears that. But I believe tonight he wants us to

go a little bit deeper, and not just to see

him as kind of the one who just helps us

with our problems, but as the supreme creator of the universe,

who loves us so deeply and has this plan for

all of humanity that he says, my blessings, they're not

just an option. They are not just frosting on the cake.

I'm commanding them, not one promise when unfulfilled. Whatever it

is you're looking from God, he wants to command a

blessing over you. But you've got to trust him that

he fulfills his word. And maybe he's the one being

patient with you because He's waiting for you to be

in a place to take possession of that blessing, to

prepare your heart, your mind, to position yourself where God goes. Oh,

now they're ready. The Israelites wandered through the wilderness for

forty years, they went into the promised Land. We've been

studying them all year. Finally, now now they're ready to

take possession of the blessing of God. And they are pictures.

He's got a bigger plan, and so he says, I'm

going to command a blessing over you, because it's gonna

be a story for your neighbors and for your family

members and for your coworkers. I'm gonna command a blessing

over you. So here's what we're gonna do. I'm gonna

ask everybody to stand to your feet. We're just gonna

take a minute with nobody walking around, and I want

you to have a moment with the Lord. I know

most of us came in here, and you know we

somehow have a belief that God takes care of me.

But I think tonight he wanted us to learn so

much deeper than that. He commands this. We're gonna take

a moment and we're gonna pray. But before we do that,

Before we do that, there may be some of you here,

and you got to hear me. None of this works

unless you are a follower of God. The Israels were

followers of God. And if you don't have a relationship

with Jesus, if you haven't given your life to him,

the Bible says, you know, you can't do anything to

have a relationship with Jesus. It's all that he did.

He came, he died on the cross, and you resurrected

so that you could do what I call the Great exchange.

You give your life to God and he gives you

his life. Now you are in a relationship. You are

completely transformed, literally born again. Now you're in that place

where okay, God's going to command a blessing over you

because you're in a relationship. But if you're not in

that relationship, everything we talked about it doesn't work because

this is not about principles. It's about a relationship with

the creator of the universe and the Son of God.

So I'm gonna say everybody, would you bow your heads,

close your eyes if you're hearing you say, Joel, I

don't know where I stand with the Lord. I don't

know if I have a relationship. I don't think I do.

I don't know what would happen to me if I

was to die tonight, and now I want to make

this great exchange. I'm ready to give my life and

receive his life. Would you pray for me that I

can be in that relationship where God then commands a blessing.

If that's you, with every head bowed, would you just

do me one favor? Would you just raise your hand

so I can see it, just as a point of contact.

Hold your hand up so I can see it. Thank you,

Thank you, hold it up. You are not just raising

it to me, Thanks so much. Thank you. Every section

you're raising it to God saying God, here's my life.

Lord Jesus, you see the hands that are lifted to you.

We join with them. We thank you that you love

us so much, God, that you gave your son who

died for our sins and resurrected that we could have

eternal life. Tonight we make the great exchange. We give

you our broken lives and we receive your wonderful, amazing,

perfect life. Lord. I pray you would fill each person

who raise a hand with the Spirit of God. We

thank you that you are a God who commands blessings

for everybody in the auditorium. Now, just for a moment,

want you to live up to the Lord in your

own whisper. Just lift up to the Lord that request

you have. Whatever it is. It could be a sickness,

It could be a hardship, It could be a mental issue.

It could be finances, it could be a broken relationship.

It could be something you can't even hardly find words for.

But I just want you to lift it to him.

Knowing he is a God who commands blessing in your life,

you just speak it out to him, and like Peter,

you ask him for help. Lord, you hear all of

these requests from your children. Spirit of God, would you

help us to see you as one who commands a blessing,

who directs it. Would you help us to believe, to

really continue to trust that you fulfill your word, that

you speak it It is true and now, Lord, according

to your word, to each and every one of us,

uniquely and distinctly, would you give us some direction for

how we can take possession, how we can shift, how

we can be positioned to receive if there are corrections

that need to be made, there's a different way we

need to look at something, trust something, pray for something.

We're just going to take thirty seconds of silence, and

I want you to listen to a very present God

right now. Listen to the nudge that he gives you,

because what he wants to do is show you. Here's

how you take possession of the blessing that I am

commanding over you. And it may be how you're treating

a relationship, and it may maybe how you're handling your money.

It may be what you're putting into your mind. Speak

to us, Lord, so that we can take possession. Lord,

I pray rest over each person in this auditorium, Peace

and rest. Would you protect us from trying to strive

and acquire your blessing? Would we sleep well tonight because

we are in your hands and your peace surrounds us.

And we know you got this. God, You got this,

and you are commanding a blessing over each and every

one of us. I pray peace over each person. We

thank you that you are a God who commands blessings.

We pray this in the precious name of Christ. Amen

and Amen, Oh bless you all.

So grateful that God is so good that he commands

blessings over our lives. Amen, Before we examine, to pray
