Jesus, we've read the end. You are conquering him.

He is going to be in eternity, forever, rotting in that lake of fire.

So Jesus, when we get discouraged, God, I pray that you would bring that truth

to mind, that you are the Alpha, the Omega, the beginning and the end, and you win.

So Jesus, we pray that today as we hear your truth through worship,

hear your truth through the breaking for and the pulling out of your word,

God, I pray that as Pat prayed yesterday for our men, that you would do something eternal today.

And that we would see lives change through the power of your word and through

the power of your Holy Spirit.

Jesus, we love you and we love the opportunity we have to sing.

God, I pray that you would bring our outside voices inside and that we would

worship without fear of what we sound like to the guy or the lady sitting next to us.

And that we would worship from a true heart of worship to you.

In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

Bye. Hey, it's great to be back with you guys.

And it's been a real privilege for me to join you again this year and last year

and get to know so many of you. This has been a rich time.

And I got good news for you this morning.

You are richer than you realize.

Actually, Erwin Lutzer wrote a book called You're Richer Than You Think as he

wrote about the blessings that we have in Christ.

And the reality is that we have a joint account with Jesus, a heavenly account.

He made all the deposits. We get to make the withdrawals.

And the name on that account is simply this, in Christ.

And I got news for you. If you're a believer here this morning,

you really are a spiritual billionaire.

But most of us are living like we're in poverty spiritually.

So I want you to go back. We looked at this account. We were introduced to it

last week in Ephesians 1.

So if you have your Bibles, turn to Ephesians 1. Stay there.

We're going to camp there this morning. We're going to open up that passage a little bit.

Ephesians 1. Give me a second to get there. We're going to be in verse 3, and he says this,

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with

every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ.

What we want to do is focus on that passage. It's a much short passage,

but very deep and loaded.

And we want to focus on that this morning because as you notice this passage

it's full of blessings blessed.

with every spiritual blessing three

times we see the word blessing in this passage and that

word blessing basically simply means it's a benefit from

god a free gift from god a benefit you know benefit simply something that's

useful and helpful to our lives and he uses this word three times in this passage

and the first times it's an adjective Look it back.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

It's describing God. Our God is blessed. And he calls upon us to bless his name

just because of the nature of who he is.

So this first word describes God and the fact that he demands our speaking well

of him, lifting him up, praising him.

We did that in song to start the service today.

The next word, blessed, is a verb.

Our blessed God has blessed us with every spiritual blessing.

You know, it's an action. God provided for us blessings.

He provided for us things that are helpful and useful for our lives.

It's an action that God took. The blessed God took an action of blessing us.

And then the last one is with every spiritual blessing. That's the noun.

That's basically the content of the blessings. You know, so our blessed God

has blessed us with blessings.

And we're going to open up and look at those blessings in just a moment. So hang on.

But that last word, the noun, becomes the content of what God blessed us with.

I want you to see a few more things about these blessings. Look back at verse,

obviously verse 3, that's the only verse we're in, but when he talks about with,

every spiritual blessings. The blessings we're talking about today are spiritual blessings.

They relate to our spiritual life.

God has blessed us with spiritual blessings, but note this, he's blessed us

with every spiritual blessing.

Bottom line, everything you need for the Christian life God has given to us.

And he's already given to us because he says this, has blessed us with every spiritual blessing.

This is big. This divides denominations,

to be honest with those few simple words, because there's some people who are

still running around looking for more blessings and they're looking for second

blessings and third blessings and all kinds of stuff like this.

The reality is, is that God has already, in Jesus Christ, blessed us with every

single spiritual blessing we will ever need in our lives.

We got the whole package.

The whole package is in Jesus. It's already ours. So every spiritual benefit

and help we need is ours in Christ. He's already given it to us.

And what I want to do this morning, just very simply, is look at these specific blessings.

You know, like I said, that third word, he's blessed us with blessings.

That's the content. Let's open that up a little bit this morning.

You know, when we go for a job, I always encourage people, don't just look at the salary.

Look at the benefit package as well.

Because, you know, salary might be this much, but now you take the benefit package

and they add in medical insurance,

they add in vacation time, they add in sick days, they may add in gas money for going for places.

Even one guy I know got a brand new truck.

Some places give retirement. The list goes on and on.

There's much more to our job when it comes to what we receive as compensation than just the salary.

And you know what? So many Christians only live with the salary.

We live with the fact that I'm forgiven and going to heaven someday.

And that's the big stuff we bank on, and that's what we live on.

And the reality is, is God has given us a benefit package in Jesus.

And there are benefit upon benefit that are ours that are significant,

not only for the future, but more so for us living our life right now and walking with Jesus. Now.

I want to talk about these benefits. Dusty, can we hand out—I made a sheet here.

Maybe get somebody to do the other side to help you out.

I want to give you a sheet that you can take home and have for yourself regarding

these benefits that God has given to us. Could you make sure everybody gets one of those?

And let me do just a little review of last week to set us up for where we're going now.

I felt afterwards, I'm not sure I clarified as well as I would have liked to,

but I talked about truth last week, the kind of truth that comes from really

the Scripture and that truth that really is from the world.

And the reason, let me just review that briefly. Truth.

It is revealed and anchored to reality.

We saw that last week. And it applies to all people, all places,

and all times, whether they believe it or not.

It's what you call absolute objective truth.

It's connected to reality, applies to everybody, whether you believe it or not,

agree with it or not, or like it or not.

But the world's view of truth is this.

It's constructed, and it is anchored not to reality, but to an individual person's

feelings, their perspectives, and their experiences,

and can change from person to person and situation to situation.

So, you know, this is important because what we're going to do now when we identify

these blessings, we talked about last week our identity, this is who you really are as a believer.

What we're going to open up in front of you today is who you are.

And the problem is, is so many of us view ourselves in the way the world looks at us.

Or I'm sorry, the way the world looks at truth. And you know what can change from person to person.

And it can change from situation to situation. And I go in this,

I'm with this group of people on Monday and I feel real good about myself.

I'm with this group on Tuesday and they're real big, significant people.

I feel less. and I go up and down with the way I look at myself and who I think

I am or what I think about myself on how victorious I am with my walk or how

much I trip up in my walk with Jesus.

So we, like the world, begin to look at our, I'm sorry, this thing keeps slipping on me.

We look at ourselves in a changing way that is based on how I feel and how I've experienced my life.

But here's the truth, guys. this is God's truth.

It's true for every person in this room at all times, no matter what you think,

what you feel, what your experience is like.

The reality is we share an identity in Christ.

And I want to just open that up to us today and take a look and help you understand

who are you, Even when you fail, even when you're depressed,

even when you are struggling, this is who you are. So this sheet here,

There's a front and a back to it. On one side, you see who we already are.

Who you are. This is who you are. Not what you feel, not what you think, not your perspective.

This, if you're a believer in Jesus, this is who you are by God's grace.

The other side is what we already have because we're in Jesus.

So let me just walk through this.

You are the salt of the earth.

You're the light of the world. Salt was used to preserve and to heal.

As a believer in Jesus, God has placed you here as part of that that's preserving

this earth, this community, this culture, and could be healing to it.

And as the light, we're the ones through whom God has seen and God's truth.

We're the light in a dark world. That's who you really are.

Whether you walk like it or not, that's a whole different issue.

But that's who you are. And obviously, we want to live consistent with who we

are. That's where we're going to end up.

But the reality is, this is who we are.

You're a channel of Christ's life. John 15, you're a branch we've chosen to bear fruit through.

Jesus lives inside of us, and he has chosen us as the branches through whom he works to bear fruit.

We are Christ's friend.

You might feel this morning, man, I didn't have my quiet time.

I must not—you know, God might be upset with him. No, no, no.

Whether you had a quiet time or not this morning, whether it was long or short,

you're a Christ's friend. That's who you are.

And we at Community Bible Church are one body interdependent upon one another.

You know, we need each other. You know why we need each other?

Because what we said just a few minutes ago, Jesus lives in each one of us.

He's chosen to express his life through us.

He's given us all different gifts, and so nobody has the whole package in themselves

of the gifts they need for the church or for living life.

And so God has given us one another. You may not know it.

You need each other. And believe it or not, the church needs more than a pastor, Pastor Josh.

Actually Josh needs you and he needs your gifts because we're all interdependent

on one another and this church will be all that Jesus wants dependent on how

many people are allowing Jesus to express his life and gift through it.

We're one body interdependent on one another. We're dead to sin,

but alive to God. Now you're going to say, wait a minute, Pat.

Man, I feel sin in a big way jumping in my heart and in my mind.

Well, this is who you are. At the core of your being, we learned last week, we're one with Jesus.

You are dead to sin and alive to God.

This is why we have Romans 6, 7, and 8.

Romans 6 teaches us truth that we are dead to sin and alive to God.

Romans 7 says, guess what? Sin still dwells in your flesh.

So just as real as Romans 6 is at the core of my being, I died with Christ,

been buried with him, risen up with him, and now I'm dead to sin and alive to

God, is just as true as that sin still dwells in my flesh.

And that's why Paul had the struggle of wretched man that I am.

You know, down deep in my core, I want to walk with Jesus, but there's something

else going on. I'm getting tripped up.

Who's going to deliver me from this body of death? Well, as he says,

thank be to God, Jesus Christ does.

And so this is the way I like to say it.

You're a brand new creature at the core of your being.

But you're inseparably linked to a fallen flesh until Jesus returns or until we die.

And so that's why the scripture talks about a battle between the flesh and the spirit.

We feel it. It's alive and well within us.

But when you stop and go back to who am I and I'm going to live consistent with

who I am and who God has made me, guess what?

I walk out of who I am in Christ. And I choose to live righteously and alive

to God rather than to be a slave to sin and to go that direction.

So I like to say it this way.

I'm a saved person at the core of my being, locked in an unsaved body.

And Romans 8 tells us we're looking forward to the redemption of our body.

And so here's this. And the reason I say this is because most of us feel that

battle and that struggle. What do you mean I'm dead? So you are dead to sin.

And if you're going to walk out of that, you'll walk out of victory.

If you're going to believe the feelings and the experiences and the trips up

that you have, you're going to keep on walking in defeat.

You're a slave to righteousness. You're a son and a daughter of God.

God is spiritually your father.

You're a joint heir with Christ. What Jesus gets, we get.

You're inseparable from Christ's love. You're the dwelling place of God's spirit and life.

You're a member of Christ's body. You are a brand new creation.

You're not who you were before you knew Jesus. You're an ambassador for Christ.

You're clothed with Christ. We sang about it. You know, when God looks at me

or he looks at you, he sees Jesus.

I'm hidden in Jesus. I'm clothed with Christ's righteousness.

So when God sees me, he sees Christ's righteousness. I may feel unrighteous.

I may have acted unrighteous.

I may have thought unrighteous. But here's the reality. When God sees me,

he sees Christ and his righteousness.

I'm one with all other believers. I'm Abraham's offspring.

Heirs according to promise. That means the promises that were made to Abraham

back in Genesis are also made to me as well as an heir.

I'm a saint. Talk about this last week.

Do you just think you're a sinner saved by grace? That's not who you are.

You were a sinner who was saved by grace. Right now, God has turned you into a saint.

Your adopted son and daughter and all the rights and privileges that come with adoption are yours.

You're God's workmanship created to do good works.

You're fellow citizens with the rest of God's family of heaven.

You're righteous and you're holy at the core of your being.

We are light we've been made complete in christ we find our wholeness in him

we have died and our life is hidden with christ we just talked about you have been chosen by god,

you know what so many people say this choosing jesus was the wisest thing i

ever did you know that's not true because you didn't choose Jesus. He chose you.

So the fact that you know Jesus is the greatest gift you ever received.

We should be on our face thanking God, Jesus, for what they've done and choosing me to be in their family.

You know, people say, why would he ever choose me? I've wrestled with that.

God, why would you choose me? I know my past. I know my life. I know who I am.

You know, I could think of a lot better people than Jesus could choose than me.

But as I wrestled with it, I came to this conclusion. The truth of 1 Corinthians

1 Corinthians 1 · chapter mention

chapter 1 is that God has chosen the foolish things in the world to confound the wise.

He's chosen the weak to confound those that are strong.

He's chosen those who are not to confound those that are in the world.

So you know what? I know why God chose me.

I got to find a fool down there. I got to find somebody that isn't that strong

and pretty vulnerable and not necessarily the people that all the world are drawn to.

He chose me because He wants to use me as an instrument to display His glory.

I love the story. Kim, you remember Marge Zajinski, I don't know if you remember

this, but I was at our church and doing some things up front.

It was before I became a senior pastor, some things on a Sunday morning.

And Marge came up to me and says, Pat, you don't know what an encouragement you are to our body.

I said, well, thank you, Marge. I was intrigued.

I said, why do you say that, Marge? She said, you know, because seeing you up

there doing it convinces us that anybody can do it.

And I said, thank you, I think.

But that's the reality. God has chosen us, not because of anything in us,

because of his purpose he wants to do with us.

You're dearly loved by God. You're a royal priesthood. You're the people of God.

You're an enemy of the devil, a child of God, and one who does not habitually sin.

That's just who you are. Now let's talk about what you have. I'll rush through this.

Again, this is what you have in Jesus. You're freed from all the things the

law could not free us from. The law couldn't free us, but Jesus did.

Redemption, freed from the power of sin.

So I want to ask you, as you struggle with sin, when you begin to realize who

you are, Are you struggling to get free?

Or are you struggling because you're already free?

There's a big difference in that battle as you approach it.

Eternal life you have. There's no condemnation to those who are in Christ.

You're in Christ, man. Yeah, we've messed up, and we still mess up,

and this and that. Yeah, we're saints who sin, but you know what?

There's no condemnation to those of us who are believers in Christ.

We've been set free from the principle of the law of sin, set free from the

principle of the law of death.

We're sanctified. That means we're set apart for God.

Grace of God was given to us, and everything you are enriched.

Wisdom is available to you, right? The righteousness of God, a future resurrection.

God's promises are fulfilled in Christ. God always leads us in his triumph in Christ.

The veil has been removed from our hearts so we see the glorious gospel.

We have the blessing of Abraham, and now here's all these blessings in Ephesians

that follow this verse three.

We've been blessed with every spiritual blessing. We've been chosen before the

foundation of the world.

Grace is freely and richly given to us.

We have the forgiveness of sin. We're free from the penalty of sin.

We've obtained an inheritance. We're sealed with the Holy Spirit.

We're raised up with Christ. We're seated with Christ in the heavenly places.

We've been brought near to God.

We may approach God with freedom and confidence, and truth is in Jesus.

We've been firmly rooted in him. I think that's Summer Vacation Bible Club this

year rooted. Our hearts have been circumcised.

We have triumph over Satan.

You know, there is a gigantic difference between trying to fight to be free

from Satan and fight because I am free from Satan.

When I was in seminary, you guys will like to see this. I understand you're

Detroit Lion fans up here.

And this guy that went to seminary played for Detroit, but he also played for

Oakland where they won the Super Bowl.

So he's wearing a Super Bowl rings down there at school.

And I remember talking to him and he knew that I was a Bears fan.

And he used to play for Detroit. He was a defensive lineman.

And he said, you know, Pat, every time we played the Bears, we knew we were

going to beat them. I said, well, how's that?

He said, because they came out playing not to lose. We came out playing to win.

And so many Christians in our battle with the devil are hoping they don't lose.

I'm going to pray more. I'm going to do more Bible study.

I'm going to commit more. I'm going to do more and more and more of something,

hopefully getting the victory.

When as Christians, Jesus has already won the victory at the cross,

in his burial, in his resurrection, in the sense of where now he's seated far

above all rule and authority.

And every name that is named, not only in this age, but also in the one come. And guess the good news?

According to Ephesians 2, we're seated with Christ in the heavenly places far

above all rule and authority.

So I want to encourage you. The next time you deal with Satan and you bring

the name and the blood and the authority of Christ, do it as a victor rather than a victim.

Do it as a victor that knows I'm going to win, who's planning to win because

Jesus already won the victory and he told me I did in his word,

versus I'm coming against him hoping and trying and trying not to lose to the devil.

It's all the difference in the world. That's who you are. You already have triumph over Satan.

Grace of God is more than abundant.

Grace of God has been granted to us.

This is who you are. This is what you have.

Now, either you can take the world's view of truth and say, well,

I don't feel that way today.

My experience didn't go that well. Well, I think, or I heard this.

But you know, if I take the truth of God's Word that is tethered to reality.

This is who you really are at the core of your being.

And when you live out of that, it makes all the difference in the world.

You know, I encourage you to do this, not right now, but when you go home tonight.

Keep this sheet. Hopefully it'll be a benefit to you.

I've literally have laminated this and have it at home, and I'll share with

you in a minute how I use it.

And basically, you know, I encourage you to take a look.

Maybe what are some of these that you're struggling with? Put a little dot in

front of them. I'm struggling. I don't feel like a saint. I feel like a sinner.

Well, you know what, then? I'd encourage you to go to that passage that's listed

here that says you're a saint. Look up cross references from there and begin

to fill your mind with the truth.

You know, let me see my notes where I am here. I'd encourage you to find God's

truth, read it, study it, memorize it,

meditate on it, pray about it, because God's Word is the raw material that God uses to transform us.

Romans 12, 1 and 2, do not be conformed to this world.

Don't want to squeeze you into its mold, but rather be transformed by the renewing

of your mind from the core of your being as the Word of God gets in our life

and the Spirit of God starts you to begin to think about it.

I came across an article I was reading yesterday that reminded me of a truth

that really helped me a long time ago.

It was written in a book called the dangerous calling of a pastor by Paul Tripp

or Ted Tripp, one of those two.

But he says this, you're the most influential person in your life because nobody

speaks to you more than you do.

You have a conversation going on in your mind all day long, I do and you do,

and my question to you And my question to me is, am I speaking truth to myself?

Or am I just letting the lies that have been shaped into me by whatever means

control my thing? I keep on letting it go.

You are the most influential person in your life. And I want to encourage you,

fill your mind and think about these things.

This is who you are. This makes all the difference in the world.

And, you know, I want to tell you about the story, how I use it, and close this up.

I don't want the tacos to get cold.

Ephesians 6.10 says this.

Nice. Ephesians. Yeah, there you go. Keep your weight. All right, we got it.

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.

Put on the full armor of God so that you will be able to stand firm against

the schemes of the devil.

The whole foundation of our spiritual warfare is built upon me in Christ and Christ in me.

Finally, be strong in the Lord. All the rights, all the privileges,

all the provisions, all the promises, all these things we looked at that Jesus

has already provided for us.

Be strong in the Lord.

That's you in Christ, and everything comes with it, and the strength of his

might, that's Christ in you.

That's Jesus in you, giving you the warrior might and the strength that you

need to fight the battle that you're going through.

So the whole foundation to our spiritual warfare is built on me in Christ and Christ in me.

I remember one night I was really struggling.

Fortunately, it's not always like this, but sometimes pastors have unique struggles.

And Josh, I'm sure you understand that.

But this night, it was a war. It was a war for my soul.

I couldn't sleep. I was literally sweating as my mind and the pressure of the

battle that was raging inside of me was so strong.

And I remember going out in the front room and kneeling down by the couch.

Now, if I did that today, I'd sit on the couch because if I'd kneel,

I'd have to wake up my wife to help me get back off the floor.

But at that time, I could kneel. And I kneeled down, and what I did is I took this.

And one by one, I began to go through and say, God, thank you.

Thank you, this is true of me. And I began to worship him.

And I began to confess in places where I wasn't living consistent or thinking consistent with that.

And I walked through these one by one. And by the time I got halfway down the

front page, I'll tell you what, I was free.

The battle was gone. All I did was put my mind on Jesus, start to thank him

for what he's done in my life.

And by the time I, like I said, halfway done, I was full of joy.

I was full of peace. I was full of freedom.

And so it's just, again, be strong in the Lord.

How do you do that? Well, you know what? I walk into these truths and I thank

him and I worship him and I praise them and I let them fill my mind and my heart

and I begin to speak these truths to myself to influence my own life.

So this is my final challenge to you.

Dare to believe. Dare. Dare to believe this is true of you.

Because it is true of you. It's a battle of faith right now.

God has said in his word, this is who you are and what you have in Christ.

Dare to believe it. Live like it is true of you.

Act like it is true of you. Talk like it is true of you.

Think like it is true of you.

Here's one for Christians. smile like it's true of you.

Some of the most miserable looking people in the world are Christians.

You look and we go, wow, the joy of the Lord, where'd it go?

Now I am so grateful that I've been able to be up here to meet Paul Baker,

because when Paul smiles, I see Jesus.

I remember that, you know, Paul, that's how I remember your name,

because I wrote down some things and I said, you know what, you look a lot like

a pastor that was on our staff named Clem. And I wrote down Paul.

He's the guy that looks like Clemens smiles all the time. And it's just, you know what, guys?

Jesus is living in us. That needs to show up on our face.

He needs to show up in our speech. He needs to show up in our attitudes.

He needs to show, you know, just pray like it's true.

When I come against the devil, like I said, pray like it's true.

Resist him because I have the victory, because I have won, because Jesus has

won. not resisting. I'm hoping somehow if I do enough of this and do it right

and say the right words and do it long enough, somehow I'll be free.

Brothers and sisters, live like it, act like it, talk like it,

think like it, smile like it, pray like it is true of you because God says it is true of you.

And there's even something better than all these blessings. The blessings are

great, but they're not everything.

Jesus is, because one of these blessings, his blessings are in Jesus.

Seek Jesus, walk with Jesus, stay in fellowship with Jesus, stay in communion

with him, and begin to let the truth fill your heart and your mind,

and dare to live out of that truth and believe it is true. Let me pray.

Father, I want to thank you for what you have given to us in Jesus. This is unbelievable.

We are spiritual billionaires, Lord, and yet so many of us live in poverty.

I pray, God, that these truths reach so deep into our lives by your Holy Spirit that, like St.

Corinthians says, the Holy Spirit will write these truths on our heart.

God, would you make us people who are living as victors rather than victims?

Would you let us be people who live out of the victory of Jesus rather than

trying to get the victory?

God, I just want to pray, would you be pleased to confront our thinking wherever it is off this morning,

transform us, and God, again, let these truths reach so deep that they even

show up in the way we talk,

The attitudes we carry The smile we have And the way we pray I ask in Jesus name Amen.

Father we are so blessed To be your

tool These truths that we hear today

Are facts And they are true

And they are real And this is just the good stuff Yeah and it's so encouraging

To hear them again and to go home with this list of truths that we can meditate

on and renew our minds around. Thank you for Pat and Kim.

They're giving us a week and a half of their time to come minister to us to

reinforce these truths.

May they head back to Chicago full of joy because of what they invested in,

our small community, how blessed we are. Yes.

You honor David. Amen.

So a year ago, I got a chance to meet this guy who seems kind of crazy.

He's really loud, but he's got this heart for God.

And and then we we talked in february on the phone he called he's like i just

god led me laid you on my heart to pray for you and we talked for like two and

a half hours or so and to hear his testimony of what god's doing how god saved

him his testimony is incredible,

and jeff is a brother's name and once you get to know this brother it's it's

incredible to see what God has done, how he just miraculously,

supernaturally intervened in his family.

He was sharing with Pat and I the other day how he doesn't know of any other

one in their family circle that's ever accepted Christ as their Lord and Savior.

And God did it with Jeff, and we're praying for his family.

And Jeff is actually kind of praying about possibly moving up this way.

And we're very excited to pray with him and pray over him. And I was going to

ask Jeff, if you don't mind, I didn't tell you this.

Would you come and pray for us,

sir? Pray for the food, but also just pray over our body and you're shy.

All right, Jesus, thank you so much for your grace and your mercy.

I pray for each person in here.

I pray, Lord God, that you will meet them in a very real way,

and meet them that they're the truth of the Bible and not just some kind of

cotton candy that they wake up and, oh yeah, I got Jesus because things are going well for them.

I pray, Lord God, that they will fall on their face and really seek you,

man. the Jesus of the Bible.

So I just pray God for each person here. I pray Lord God for the food.

And I pray Lord right now, it's on my heart.

You know, there's no, there's no such thing as a lukewarm Christian.

It's you're in or you're out. There's not, well, I think I am.

I'm not. So if you think that way, man, talk to one of us, man.

So if you never went through trials and tribulations in your life,

And you call yourself christian because you think that god's would have protected

you, but it's not really a true heartfelt I want to pray for that.

So lord, thank you so much for your grace Your mercy your sovereignty And just

we need you very desperately In jesus name.
