  1. I get asked in one way or another, the most frequent.

  2. I get asked this in a variety of different ways,

  3. pretty regularly. Now, here's what it is essentially.

  4. It's asked in different ways, but here's what

  5. it is essentially, is how do I know that I have

  6. been truly saved by the Lord? That's the question

  7. I get asked. How do I truly know that I have

  8. been saved by the Lord? How do I know that I

  9. have received salvation instead of just learning

  10. a lot about a religion and just figured out how

  11. to blend in? It's an important question, right?

  12. It's an important question to ask ourselves.

  13. Sina and I were in a store the other day and

  14. I saw a pair of Jinko jeans. Now for those of

  15. you that don't know, Jinko is a brand of jeans

  16. that are really baggy, really baggy. If you're

  17. a teenager and you're thinking about getting

  18. a pair of Jinko jeans, I'm going to try to discourage

  19. you from doing that, because it's one of those

  20. things that you will regret when you're my age,

  21. all right? So, now, Jinko jeans, most of them

  22. are really baggy. They cover your shoes, they

  23. drag on the ground, it's ridiculous. Back in

  24. the late 1900s, Early 2000s They were they were

  25. very popular. I haven't I haven't really seen

  26. them since that time But it did remind me of

  27. a time that I used to wear them. I Was starting

  28. my freshman year of high school and during the

  29. summer one of my good friends decided that he

  30. wanted to get into skateboarding So he shows

  31. up to school wearing these pants and of course

  32. I have to have these pants also. Then there was

  33. the skateboard shop that was across the street

  34. from our high school and we would go there during

  35. lunch to look at different boards. Now if you

  36. looked at me back then you would think that I

  37. knew what I was doing and you knew you would

  38. think that oh I belong in a skateboard shop.

  39. I got really invested into learning about them.

  40. At the time I could tell you which decks were

  41. best for sliding down rails, which trucks were

  42. best, which bearings went best with which wheels.

  43. I looked the part. I could talk about it. But

  44. to this day, I have still never, ever ridden

  45. a skateboard. And you won't see me try it now,

  46. either, because I'm worried I'll break a hip.

  47. But thankfully, that season in my life didn't

  48. last long, and I went back. to normal -sized

  49. pants. Now, I think that there are a lot of cultural

  50. Christians who look the part. They know how to

  51. talk about it, but they are just modeling what

  52. they see happening around them, right? And there's

  53. been no heart change, there's no evidence of

  54. a life transformed by the Lord, but they can

  55. have a conversation, right, and they can look

  56. the part. So in our passage this morning, John

  57. is going to give us some evidence of what it

  58. looks like to be a follower of Jesus. And so

  59. if you are wrestling with that question. If you

  60. are struggling with am I truly saved? Am I truly

  61. a follower of Jesus? My hope this morning is

  62. that this text will bring some clarity to your

  63. question. All right. And so first, John, chapter

  64. three, we're going to start in verse 11. If you're

  65. willing and able, we're going to ask you to stand

  66. as we honor the Lord's word. No pressure on that.

  67. But we're going to read a few verses this morning

  68. and then we'll dive into it. So starting in verse

  69. 11, it says, for this is the message that you

  70. have heard from the beginning, that we should

  71. love one another. We should not be like Cain

  72. who was of the evil one and murdered his brother.

  73. And why did he murder him? Because his own deeds

  74. were evil and his brother's righteous. Do not

  75. be surprised, brothers, that the world hates

  76. you. You know that we have passed out of death

  77. into life because we love the brothers. Whoever

  78. does not love abides in death. Everyone who hates

  79. his brother is a murderer. And you know that

  80. no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.

  81. Let's pray. Father. Thank you for your word this

  82. morning. Thank you for just the growth that I

  83. have seen in our people in regards to loving

  84. our brothers. I pray, Father, that as we look

  85. at this text, you'll open our hearts to hear

  86. from you. I pray that we will be sensitive to

  87. your spirit. And Father, I do. I pray for life

  88. change to happen in this place. We ask all these

  89. things in Jesus' name. Amen. Amen. So if you

  90. remember, if you were here, if you remember at

  91. the beginning of this letter, First John John

  92. starts off by reminding his the readers of the

  93. beginning of their faith journey He reminds them

  94. that that his message that he's telling them

  95. can be trusted because he walked with Jesus He

  96. saw Him crucified. He saw the miracles that were

  97. done. Now here He is in chapter 3 and He is reiterating

  98. the fact that the message is still the same.

  99. It is consistent. We haven't changed with the

  100. pressure that culture has put on us. From what

  101. we've been speaking of since the beginning until

  102. now, this is the message. And the message is

  103. that we as believers should love one another.

  104. That's the message. It's all about love. This

  105. echoes Jesus's words in John chapter 13 where

    John 13 chapter mention

  106. he says, love one another as I have loved you.

  107. And so from the start of the gospel, love has

  108. been the heartbeat of the Christian life. But

  109. then here John contrasts that with Cain who belonged

  110. to the evil one and murdered his brother out

  111. of envy. He says that in verse 12. But I think

  112. that we need to be very careful here and really

  113. understand what hatred is. Because you might

  114. not commit the act of murder, you might not actually

  115. go physically kill somebody, and therefore you

  116. might think, oh, I don't have hate in me, according

  117. to this. Again, we need to remember what Jesus

  118. says. He mentions in the Sermon on the Mount

  119. that anyone who is angry, at His brother is liable

  120. to judgment in the same way that anybody who

  121. murders is liable to judgment. So Jesus just

  122. goes beyond the action and He's getting to the

  123. heart. This is one of the dangers of legalism.

  124. Someone who is legalistic will use actions as

  125. a means to defend whether or not they are in

  126. a good position with the Lord. So they will say

  127. things like, like I go to church whenever I can.

  128. I attend a Bible study every week. I tithe money

  129. to the church. I don't cheat on my spouse. I

  130. make sure that my kids know that they are loved

  131. by me. I don't drink. I don't gamble. I don't

  132. watch R -rated movies unless they're about Jesus,

  133. right? Like these are the things that they say.

  134. And whenever you have a list of things you do

  135. or don't do to justify your righteousness, You

  136. are walking in legalism so when we get to a text

  137. like this that says that we should not be like

  138. the murderer a Legalist will say well. I haven't

  139. killed anybody so I must not have hate When in

  140. reality their hearts have not been transformed

  141. And they are full of anger and bitterness hatred

  142. Even unspoken is spiritual murder. It kills relationships

  143. and it reveals a heart that's far from God. So

  144. that is a good question that we should be asking

  145. ourselves when it comes to our salvation. Do

  146. I have a list of things that I use to justify

  147. my righteousness? When I think about my righteousness,

  148. do I have a list of things that I do or don't

  149. do? Am I holding on to hate? towards one another

  150. towards another believer in my heart because

  151. I think when we examine our hearts when we really

  152. stop and and are distracted and we examine our

  153. hearts we know if we have truly been transformed

  154. that the Holy Spirit reveals that to you if you

  155. are seeking him then then on top of that we have

  156. the Word of God that will either confirm or correct

  157. what we believe to be true I'll give you a perfect

  158. example what I think is an example for my life.

  159. Several years ago, we had a friend, a really

  160. close friend of ours, that completely betrayed

  161. us. He made some accusations against my son,

  162. where we thought, in the moment, we're like,

  163. yeah, I could see that happening. I could see

  164. him doing that. But I wanted to confirm. before

  165. I brought any sort of punishment. So I talked

  166. to a few other people that were there because

  167. I wasn't there. This guy making these accusations,

  168. he wasn't there and so I wanted to confirm what

  169. happened with a few other people that I knew

  170. were there. Because he was taking the word of

  171. his kid and it turns out that what was being

  172. said of my son wasn't true. And so I call him

  173. up and I say hey I've talked to several people

  174. who were there and and I can't get anybody to

  175. Confirm what you said to be true in fact the

  176. the opposite seemed to be true It wasn't my kid

  177. that would did wrong it was his now listen. I'm

  178. not at all saying That that that my baby could

  179. never do anything wrong I'm not saying that my

  180. kid is innocent at all times But in this particular

  181. case the accusation was strong and the information

  182. was incorrect And so I thought, because we were

  183. friends, we could talk about it and find a solution.

  184. I was wrong on that one. He got mad. He got defensive.

  185. He went on to try and destroy my reputation in

  186. our church, in the community. Hurtful things

  187. were said about me and my wife and our children.

  188. He owned several businesses in town. And he was

  189. viewed as kind of a big deal. Now, I'm going

  190. to be honest. It never crossed my mind to kill

  191. him. But I for sure thought about his death.

  192. I had hoped that his businesses would fail. I

  193. prayed that he would be exposed for some sort

  194. of crime. That was where my heart was every time

  195. I thought that he would be in an event that I

  196. was going to I would become tense you know that

  197. feeling I'd become tense and then I begin to

  198. start thinking of all these different excuses

  199. as To why I couldn't go because I didn't want

  200. to be around him now now throughout all of that

  201. I never doubted my salvation But I also knew

  202. that if that attitude continued If that attitude

  203. continued, it would reveal that the Holy Spirit

  204. wasn't really in me. I had to lay that before

  205. the Lord daily. And what I have learned is that

  206. when I do that, when I lay those things before

  207. the Lord daily, it gets me to a place of love

  208. a lot quicker than if I were to just ignore it

  209. or push it down or sweep it under the rug or

  210. whatever. I wanted to get to a place where I

  211. wished him success. I learned that true forgiveness

  212. is willing the good of the person who offended

  213. you. And so now I can genuinely say, I hope his

  214. marriage thrives. I hope his businesses succeed.

  215. I hope his kids walk in the ways of the Lord.

  216. And what I believe that John is trying to convey

  217. to us, Is that being angry at someone is not

  218. a cause for judgment, but staying in that place

  219. should make you question whether or not the Spirit

  220. of the Lord is truly inside of you. Paul says

  221. that love keeps no record of wrongs. So if you

  222. have a list of things or you have a list of people

  223. that have wronged you, you might begin to ask

  224. God to reveal Himself to you. Hatred doesn't

  225. always look dramatic. It's the grudge you justify.

  226. The gossip that you share. The cold shoulder

  227. that you give. John says, anyone who hates a

  228. brother or sister is a murderer. I mean, that's

  229. strong. That's strong. That shows you how seriously

  230. God takes love. But when there's no love, there's

  231. no eternal life. So this week... Maybe right

  232. now, this week, name one person that you struggle

  233. to love. Think of that one person you struggle

  234. to love, and I want you to pray for them daily.

  235. Not for them to change, not for them to get hit

  236. by a bus, but I want you to pray for your heart

  237. to soften. Pray that God would change you. Love

  238. starts with a choice, not a feeling. Then John

  239. gives us the ultimate example in verse 16. He

  240. says this is how we know what love is that Jesus

  241. Christ laid down his life for us. Love isn't

  242. sentiment. It's sacrifice. Jesus didn't just

  243. say he loves us. He proved it on the cross. Giving

  244. everything of himself so that we could live.

  245. This is the standard. This is the standard. And

  246. John says we ought to lay down our lives for

  247. our brothers and sisters. That doesn't always

  248. mean dying. It means living sacrificially. It's

  249. giving up your time, your comfort, your preferences

  250. for someone else. It's the parent that stays

  251. up late with a sick child. It's the friend who

  252. listens without interrupting. It's the neighbor

  253. shoveling the elderly person's driveway. Love

  254. should cost you something. And again, it doesn't

  255. cost us because we are trying to earn something.

  256. It costs us because we have been transformed

  257. from within. Verse 17 says that if we have material

  258. possessions, but we close our hearts to a brother

  259. in need, then how can the love of God live in

  260. us? In other words, if you are stingy, and you

  261. know who you are, then you are not living in

  262. a way that honors Him. I heard a story this week

  263. and I thought, It was appropriate for this. Maybe

  264. you've heard it too. There was this man who was

  265. on a business trip and he had a layover. So while

  266. he was waiting on his next flight, he went and

  267. he grabbed a cup of coffee, grabbed a bag of

  268. cookies to snack on. And after he gets what he

  269. wanted, he looks around and all the tables are

  270. full, except for this one table has one guy sitting

  271. and there's one empty seat. And so he walks over

  272. there and he asked the gentleman if he can sit

  273. down. for a little bit, the man agrees. And so

  274. he gets to the table, he puts his bag down, he

  275. puts his coffee on the table, he takes his coat

  276. off, sits down and starts scrolling through his

  277. phone. And then he grabs the cookies and he starts

  278. eating the cookies. And as he's scrolling through

  279. his phone, he realizes the guy across the table

  280. from him reaches over and grabs his cookies and

  281. starts to eat them. Well, that's weird, he thought.

  282. He could have asked me. But then he's like, well,

  283. he looks like he's from a foreign country. Maybe

  284. that's how they do it there. Maybe it's not weird

  285. for him. So he grabs another cookie. And then

  286. he puts the bag right next to him, the guy. These

  287. are my cookies. And he puts it right next to

  288. him on the table. And he goes about continuing

  289. to scroll on his phone. A few minutes later,

  290. the man had the audacity to reach over the table,

  291. grab the bag of cookies, and take another one

  292. out. Now this man is now beyond offended. He

  293. decides, I better leave. I better leave before

  294. I say something that's gonna make the situation

  295. worse. So he stands up and he puts his coat on

  296. and he reaches down to grab his bag that was

  297. on the ground and he realizes that his cookies

  298. were actually on his bag the whole time. So the

  299. man across from him wasn't... Stealing his cookies.

  300. He was actually sharing his cookies If anybody

  301. should have been offended by the situation it

  302. was the guy that let him sit at the table to

  303. begin with Now here's the truth. The truth is

  304. every single month we each get ten secular cookies

  305. And how we are called to live as followers of

  306. Jesus is to take one of those secular cookies

  307. and give it back to the Lord in some way And

  308. when that happens that that secular cookie becomes

  309. sacred And you're not left with nine secular

  310. cookies You're actually left with nine sacred

  311. cookies because you've honored the Lord with

  312. what you have And the problem is so many of us

  313. think that we need the ten cookies if not eleven

  314. cookies in order to make it through the month

  315. To live sacrificially It is to live with your

  316. hands open and understanding that everything

  317. that comes into your life comes from the Lord.

  318. But when you close your hand, when you close

  319. your hand and say, this is mine, I'm going to

  320. control it, I'm going to control my money, I'm

  321. going to control my time, I'm going to control

  322. my desires. When we close our hands and we try

  323. to hold on to what we have, we not only limit

  324. what can go out, but we also keep anything extra

  325. from coming in. And the Lord tells us to test

  326. Him in this. Let Him show you what trusting in

  327. Him looks like when we live sacrificially. So

  328. if you were to examine your life, in what ways

  329. do you live sacrificially? I want you to look

  330. for one practical example this week in which

  331. you can lay down your life. Share a meal. Give

  332. financially. offer help without being asked let

  333. your actions speak louder than your words put

  334. your phone down and spend some time with those

  335. you love ask God in your prayers to reveal to

  336. you in which ways you could give sacrificially

  337. because what I've learned that when I pray that

  338. prayer God give me ways that I can live more

  339. sacrificially God always reveals to me in which

  340. different ways in which I can serve my family

  341. better serve our church better in ways I can

  342. love others around me better have the courage

  343. to pray that prayer this week then John concludes

  344. let us not love with words or speech but with

  345. actions and in truth in verse 18 real love is

  346. tangible and honest and here's the blessing when

  347. we love this way we know that we belong to the

  348. truth and it sets our hearts at rest in His presence.

  349. Guilt and fear and doubt fade when our lives

  350. back up our faith. Even when we feel condemned,

  351. verse 20, God is greater than our hearts. He

  352. knows everything. His grace covers our imperfections

  353. as we walk in obedience. Now I want to spend

  354. just a few minutes on verse 20 there. It reads,

  355. whenever our hearts condemn us, God is greater

  356. than our hearts. So why would our hearts condemn

  357. us? I believe it's because sometimes we fall

  358. into that legalistic mindset of I'm just not

  359. doing enough. I'm not doing enough. I'm still

  360. struggling. I was doing well with the Lord and

  361. I took two steps back. And so our hearts begin

  362. to condemn us. I need to do more. But 2nd Timothy

  363. chapter 2 says, but God's firm foundation stands

  364. bearing the seal. The Lord knows those who are

  365. His. So when those doubts begin to creep in,

  366. we can be assured that our salvation is not dependent

  367. on us, but it's dependent on Him. I want you

  368. to think about what that means. When we say,

  369. that I have to do something to earn our salvation,

  370. what we are saying is that what he has done for

  371. us isn't good enough. That's what we're saying.

  372. Think about that. Think about the last hours

  373. of Jesus before he was crucified. Pleading with

  374. his father that there be another way. Sweating

  375. drops of blood because the stress that he was

  376. feeling as it was leading up to this situation.

  377. Being mocked by society for his faithfulness

  378. to his father. Taking 39 whips across his body

  379. that turned his back into hamburger meat. His

  380. closest friends desert him or deny even knowing

  381. him. He then has to carry a cross up to a hill

  382. to his execution point where he then has nails

  383. Driven through his hands and feet and then being

  384. stood up on that cross so the whole town could

  385. watch him die Do you really think that God looks

  386. down on that and thinks that's not really good

  387. enough? I'm gonna need I'm gonna need a little

  388. bit more So many of us live our lives Believing

  389. that we have to help God in some way That we

  390. have to do something That is not the gospel The

  391. gospel is that we get to rest in the fact that

  392. this gift has been given to us that and we didn't

  393. deserve it And when we truly understand that

  394. gift That is Jesus. That is His sacrifice. That

  395. gift that is our salvation. It should completely

  396. change how we operate in this world. And that's

  397. how John closes out this chapter. That we as

  398. believers, that we believe in the name of the

  399. Son, and we love one another. Not as he suggested,

  400. but as he commanded us. that we are to love one

  401. another. And whoever keeps his commandments,

  402. John says, abides in God. So in the past, when

  403. people ask me how can they be assured of their

  404. salvation, I would tend to go over the fruit

  405. of the Spirit that's found in Galatians 5. I

  406. would tend to go over that list. Is there evidence

  407. in your life of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness?

  408. goodness, gentleness, and self -control. If there

  409. isn't, then you might begin to question those

  410. things, right? But as I've grown, and as I've

  411. matured, I've realized that if we focus on the

  412. fruit, then we can tend to put the focus back

  413. on us. The fruit is the byproduct of what is

  414. actually going on in our hearts. We can be assured

  415. of our salvation by how we love others. Now I

  416. don't want you to, I don't want to make anybody

  417. believe that that means that you can't get mad

  418. at others. It doesn't mean you have to be passive

  419. when somebody wrongs you or if there's some sort

  420. of injustice. Jesus says the world will know

  421. that you are my disciples by how you love others,

  422. which means the way we respond when we feel offended.

  423. The way we respond when we get angry, when there's

  424. injustice, it should look different than how

  425. a non -believer responds. The unbelieving world

  426. does not know how to handle conflict. They hold

  427. on to bitterness and gossip. The unbelieving

  428. world seeks out revenge. The unbelieving world

  429. hates. It gives the cold shoulder. It holds a

  430. grudge. There's this girl in our church who asked

  431. an anonymous question in one of those Quad Cities

  432. Facebook groups. Dangerous, number one. But she

  433. did it. And the question was basically, if you

  434. don't go to church in the area, why not? If you

  435. don't go to church in the area, why not? Now,

  436. I haven't seen it, but she told me the majority

  437. of people who responded to that question, and

  438. there was a lot of them, the majority of people

  439. who don't go to church don't go because of how

  440. people treat each other in the church. That's

  441. why they don't go. Is that not how the enemy

  442. works? to do the complete opposite of what God

  443. has called us to be recognized for? He said,

  444. people will know you are mine by how you treat

  445. one another. And the enemy says, I'm going to

  446. keep people away because of how you treat each

  447. other. You see the opposite of what's happening

  448. here. And so as believers, we are called to be

  449. different. Would you say your behavior as a Christian

  450. and how you treat others is drawing people to

  451. Christ or keeping them away from experiencing

  452. Him? To be different means we do everything we

  453. can to not let a root of bitterness grow in us.

  454. And sometimes for me that means I am praying

  455. to the Lord hourly. to help me forgive. Because

  456. once a day isn't enough. It means we have to

  457. take our thoughts captive, not let them escape

  458. or cause more damage. It is unbelievably difficult

  459. at times to love like Christ because it goes

  460. against our flesh. I mean, we saw that with Jesus

  461. in the garden. Father, let this cup pass for

  462. me. His flesh didn't want it. But then he says,

  463. but not my will, but yours be done. Jesus modeled

  464. it for us. God, I want to be angry. I'm justified

  465. in my feelings because of how I was treated.

  466. I deserve to be vindicated. But the challenge

  467. is when you feel those things that you pray,

  468. not my will, but yours. I'm going to love them

  469. anyway. I'm going to forgive them even though

  470. they don't deserve it because the truth is I

  471. don't deserve the forgiveness the Lord has given

  472. me. How are you loving? How are you showing the

  473. love of Christ to those around you? If somebody

  474. were to look at your life, And look at how you

  475. treat others. Would they say, oh, I want to be

  476. a part of that? How do they do that? How do they

  477. forgive that scenario? How do they forgive that

  478. action? How do they continue to have a relationship

  479. with that individual because of what they said

  480. or did? Our lives should reflect the love that

  481. God has for us. So you want to know where you

  482. are in your salvation? The question you have

  483. to ask is, how do I love? How do I love? So what

  484. a great way to end our service this morning as

  485. we take communion. We're gonna invite the elders

  486. and deacons to come forward. Because we're going

  487. to remember the love that was shown to us on

  488. the cross. that while we were still sinners,

  489. Christ died for us. I need you to hear that verse.

  490. While we were still sinners, Christ died for

  491. us. Not when we were perfect, then he died for

  492. us. Not when we got our act together, then he

  493. died for us. While we were still sinners in the

  494. middle of our mess, he laid down his life for

  495. us. And because of that, that should reflect

  496. to the relationships around us. So when our flesh

  497. says I want to hold a grudge, when our flesh

  498. says I want to give a dirty look, when our flesh

  499. says I want to gossip about them or bash them,

  500. we ask the Holy Spirit of God to change our hearts

  501. and help us love the way He loves. And so these

  502. gentlemen are going to pass out our communion

  503. this morning. If you're new and you've proclaimed

  504. faith in Jesus, he is your savior, we invite

  505. you to the table. We invite you to participate

  506. with us. As these trays get passed in front of

  507. you, there's two cups stacked on each other.

  508. Grab them both and then just kind of hold onto

  509. them and we'll take them here in a second. If

  510. you're gluten -free, we have that option as well.

  511. But as you hold the... symbolic body and blood

  512. of Christ. Will you ask yourself, will you pray

  513. to him? God, am I reflecting your sacrifice well?

  514. Am I reflecting your love well? Thank you for
