Guarding the Gospel | Ryan Straarup

Today, what we're gonna do as we wrap up this uh series on on cults and counterfeits.

Um, we've discussed how to recognize the true gospel um uh versus a cult or a counterfeit, or in Brad's uh way of uh doing as an 18-year-old, he discovered what the true church was compared to another true church.

Uh it was just yep, they're great churches.

And um, here's what you uh need to know is we're gonna talk through something that Orthodox Christianity is built on, and that is the creeds and why they are important.

We're gonna talk about what they are, why they exist, and focus on two of these uh creeds, and I'm gonna show you how the apostles addressed and the church addressed false teachings, teachers, and heresies.

But here's what you need to know, and if you walk out of today just knowing this, this is good.

The creeds were never written to replace or add to scripture, they were written to protect what the scripture teaches.

Amen.

Let's jump into this passage of scripture, and I'm gonna show you how we eventually arrive to uh to the creeds, and and I'm gonna show you this how this passage of scripture will lay a foundation on everything that we were about to talk about.

But I want you to notice how Jesus is promising the Holy Spirit to lead his people, to lead the apostles, and to lead the church.

We're gonna go to John 14, verse 15 to 21.

John 14:15–21

And he Jesus says this if you love me, keep my commands, and I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever, the Spirit of truth.

The world cannot accept him because it neither sees him nor knows him.

But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.

I will not leave you as orphans, I will come to you.

Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me because I live, you also will live.

On that day, you will realize that I am in my father, and you are in me, and I am in you.

Talk about a strange, odd sentence that makes no sense unless you have the spirit in you.

Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me.

The one who loves me will be loved by my father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.

Jesus, we invite you in, Holy Spirit, be with us as we get into your word today.

I pray that we will come to know you more, learn to love you more, and grow in our relationship with you in Jesus' name.

Amen.

All right, I want to walk through three quick definitions before we go to I'm gonna get a little nerdy with you.

Is that okay?

Okay, good, good, my kind of people.

All right, we're gonna walk through three definitions.

The first one is gonna be orthodoxy, the second one is going to be heresy, and the third one is going to be creeds.

So orthodoxy simply means this Orthodoxy means good teaching or right belief.

That's what orthodoxy is.

This is what the apostles taught, what they received from Jesus, and they taught and they began to hand down.

Now, of course, you may be like Ryan, there's like thousands of denominations out there.

Yes, but the core tenets of what make us believers has been passed down over generations.

So that is orthodoxy.

Now, the next word is this word gets so overused in Christian culture today.

If you ever find yourself uh looking at pastors preaching on Instagram and all that kind of stuff, and you happen to make the mistake and you tap the comments, I don't recommend that you ever do that.

But if you ever do, you'll see someone be like, This is a false teacher, this is a heresy, this person's a heretic, blah, blah, blah, blah.

Like they're they're just constantly saying all that kind of stuff.

When when really all their meaning is they go, I hold a different, I'm from a different denomination, or I have a different theology than that person is there.

It it doesn't mean that the the the pastor is denying Jesus was was truly God or anything like that.

It's just he said something that I didn't believe in and and I don't like drums in in worship, so now that that whole church is a false church.

It's something like dumb like that.

People are weird.

Stay out of the comments.

But here's what the word heresy actually means.

Heresy in Greek means to choose.

Later on, the word evolved, and it really meant that it was unorthodox, it was outside of the core tenets of the faith.

But before that, initially, the word heresy just meant to choose.

It was essentially that it wasn't someone who was misinformed.

Heretics are choosers.

Okay?

They're choosers.

It's not someone who is misinformed, it's someone who knows better, who knows what orthodox teaching is, and yet chooses to teach something outside of that.

You don't get to be accidentally a heretic, you choose to be a heretic.

And if you're in a good church, they're gonna say, Hey, can I just show you why what you said is wrong?

It doesn't mean that anything bad is gonna happen to you, but it's another thing if you've been exposed to something and you say, I willingly reject that, and I'm going to teach something else.

So, what is the creed?

The creed, uh the word creed comes from the Latin word credo, which simply means I believe.

It's the first uh line in the Apostles' Creed that we're going to look at.

That's where the word creed comes from.

It's a confession.

In fact, every church has got some sort of like um, it may not look official or something like that, but every church has got some kind of creed that's like unique to them.

And uh, and you can really go and you'll you'll find that many churches have got very, very similar uh creeds, and those are just statements of belief.

If you go to this church's website, if you go on to uh spiritchurch.co and you hit uh what we believe, you will see somewhat of an informal creed that uh that of what we believe as a church.

But back in the day, in the early church, they didn't have a website they could just go to and and look at what the creed what does the creed of this church say?

What does the beliefs of this church say?

No, what they did is they would gather phrases and and orthodox teaching, they would memorize it, and then they would begin to teach this.

Um so the creeds themselves are not scripture, but they confirm the teachers that the apostles uh uh preached, and creeds anchored the beliefs of the early church.

One of the things that uh we did early on uh with our kids is create values and an identity, somewhat of a creed, very informal.

I don't even know what it is, but I could tell you when the kids weren't acting accordingly.

Like we would say things like straw-ups are kind, straws are loving, just like fruit of the spirit kind of stuff, you know, just like good Christian kids, you know.

We're like just this is what what you are, and uh and when they were really young, we had to really correct them on what they weren't.

And we go, straws are not bullies.

I live in Utah, and uh and we we do beautiful hikes, and our hikes are kind of like intense uh at certain points.

And my daughter, she's got this uh phrase that when she starts getting nervous when she's hiking, she'll go, Mom, dad, I'm freaking out.

She's six, by the way.

I'm freaking out, and we go, we go, strips are brave, and she goes, Strirups are not brave.

Like, I'm freaking out.

She's like, and we're we're trying to basically it's a guardrail that that when our kids step out of line with our values, we can point them back to who we are.

But the difference is that these creeds are not some little stribe faith, these are core tenets that they say when you are out of this, you are out.

If you want to get into alignment with it, this is what the apostles have passed on for generations.

So, one of the first creeds outside of Scripture was the Apostles' Creed, and this creed was composed throughout the church.

It it morphed and it was a little different according to where you were and everything, but eventually they settled on what the Apostles' Creed was going to be.

And it was given as a baptismal confession.

Basically, when you were getting baptized, this was the creed that you would learn, memorize, and recite before you got baptized.

In fact, scholars say that even earlier creeds are found throughout scripture.

I'm not going to go through all of it, but in Philippians 2, verse 5 to 11, you see a creed that was added that the apostle Paul adds.

Philippians 2:5–11

He says, In your relationships with one another, having the same mindset as Christ Jesus, and then he says the creed, who being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage.

Rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.

Can you see that Paul is anchoring the church in who Jesus is?

And he's saying this, and the way it's written, they they believe they go, This is a creed, this is like a it's got a rhythm to it.

It's a confession that the church would make.

But here's the thing like when you look at like you, if you go, why do we need the creeds?

Why did they why did they write the creeds?

Well, because they didn't write the New Testament yet.

All they had at the time was the Old Testament.

All they had was an Old Testament, and they go, What are your scriptures?

It's the Old Testament, but you guys don't look like Jews, yeah, because of the resurrection.

What do you mean the resurrection?

Well, let's talk about these creeds.

This is what we believe, this is the story of how it happened.

And then the the apostles are writing letters that eventually get accepted as authoritative in the church, and they are uh they become passages uh of scripture.

But here is the creed.

One of my professors likes to call this creed load-bearing theology.

It's the apostles' creed, and it looks like this: it says, I believe in God, the Father Almighty, the creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended to hell.

On the third day, he rose again from the dead, he ascended to heaven, is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.

From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and everlasting life.

And the church said, Amen.

Amen.

Now, you, if you are any like recovering Catholic or something like that, you're like tweaked out over there, and you were like, they had the word Catholic over there.

What does that mean?

Catholic in um in I think it's Latin means universal.

So all they're saying is like the true church that is the true church at all places at all times, people that come under Jesus.

So that is the true Christian church of all times and all places.

That's what the word Catholic means.

They are not meaning Roman Catholic, just so you know.

Um, of course, Catholics will tell you that they mean Roman Catholic, but hey, um, God bless them.

Um I hope that if you're a born-again believer and you look at that creed and you can look at that and go, Yeah, I believe that.

I believe that.

Remember, the creeds were never written to replace or add to scripture, they were written to protect what the scripture teaches.

I've got four points that I want to go through.

And by the way, if you affirm that creed, next Sunday's baptism, basically you're doing like early church stuff.

You're like, hey, I can say that creed, I can, I can, I can affirm that creed, memorize that creed.

We're not gonna make you say it in front of everyone, but for sure your next step is baptism.

So I'm gonna treat this a little bit for like a classroom.

I'm gonna I'm gonna give you three points.

We're gonna dive into a little bit of history over here, and then the fourth point I really want you to listen because that point is is for you.

Okay?

You got it?

I mean it's all for you, but that one's like really for you.

Okay, so number one, point number one, counterfeit gospels are not new.

The early church debated constantly, and the early church always debated over the nature of Christ.

Almost all of the early church debates over the nature of Christ.

Now, can I tell you the first heresy that was ever preached?

Can I?

Okay, good, good, good, good.

Because if you said no, I would have, I don't know what I would have done.

Um the first heresy, the first bit of heresy related to Jesus right after the resurrection, and it actually happened on the first day that Jesus resurrected.

Let's go to Matthew 28, verse 11 to 15.

Matthew 28:11–15

Now, just before this, if you go to Matthew 28, verse 1, this is where the angel has come down, rolls the stone over bright light and everything, and the guards that were sent to protect the tomb so that the disciples didn't steal Jesus' body, they see this angel come down, roll the stone, and go into the temple.

Matthew 28:1

And it says that they fell as though they were dead men, meaning they fainted.

So they're just like, they're just like, well, like they're then they get up and we pick up in verse 11, and it says, While the women were on their way, some of the gods went into the city and reported to the chief priests everything that would happen that had happened.

They're gonna go, ha ha ha, you're not gonna believe what happened.

There were some guys that came in and they rolled a stone and everything like that, went in.

We we woke up and the body was gone.

Like that that was it.

It says this when the priests had met with the elders, they devised a plan, gave the soldiers a large sum of money, telling them, You are to say his disciples came during the night and stole him away while we were asleep.

If this report gets to the governor, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble.

So the soldiers took the money as they and did as they were instructed.

And this is the story widely circulated among the Jews to this very day.

From day one, falsehoods about Jesus have been spread.

Jesus hasn't even ascended to the right hand of the Father yet, and they're making stuff up.

And they ran with that narrative for years.

Still to this day, Orthodox Jews will say, Yeah, there was a Jesus.

There was a guy named Jesus, he was crucified.

Some people started to follow him, we don't believe he resurrected.

Same narrative that's been run.

And here's the heartbreaking thing about this passage the chief priests don't even say to the guards, we don't believe you.

They don't even say that.

In fact, it kind of feels like they're like, they could be telling the truth.

But they choose to run with a different narrative.

We know what the truth is based on your testimony, but we choose to run with a different narrative.

It's so funny that today that narrative is still being preached, that Jesus was just a good moral man, that he was crucified and that he died, but there was no resurrection.

Many play people claim to believe in this Jesus, from Islam to atheism, because if Jesus resurrects, everything changes.

Point two, the the apostles taught how to discern truth.

John dealt with many different heresies surrounding the nature of Christ throughout all of his letters and the gospel itself.

In fact, if you look at uh Genesis 1 verse 1, many of us know this passage of scripture.

Genesis 1:1

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

And then in John 1, verse 1, he says, In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the word was God.

John 1:1

And in 1 John 1, it says, Okay, don't worry, it's not one that we always remember.

But what Jesus, what John is doing in this passage of uh scripture is that he's saying, We saw him with our own eyes.

Yeah, I touched him.

We handled it, says we handled the word of truth.

He's saying, trust me, he was human.

Because what he's coming to do is he's he's uh he's attacking a heresy that was running rampant around that time called docetism.

Now, docetism essentially taught that Jesus looked human, but he wasn't truly human, he was only divine.

Like he just looked like a human, but he wasn't really a human.

And John's going, no, he was human.

I saw him, I handled him.

He was human.

He wasn't just a mere projection or anything like that.

And here is how he addresses it in 1 John 4, verse 1 to 3.

1 John 4:1–3

It says, Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

This is how you can recognize the spirit of God.

Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God.

He says, You gotta acknowledge that Jesus was a human being.

Yes, he was God, but he was a human being.

But every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God.

This is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.

So you may look and you may go, Ryan, why is that important though?

Why why is John coming after these docetists that believe that Jesus was fully doing?

Is it so bad that we just we if in fact that feels even better to me, like he's so holy in God and he just projected an image of humanity and everything, but he wasn't really human.

No.

The reason why John is coming after this is because if you don't believe that Jesus was truly flesh, you believe that he didn't truly die.

If he didn't truly die, then the saving work cannot be applied to you because something had to die when sin was committed by humanity.

And in order for that something to die, he has to be really human, which means he has to be really dead.

That's why he's coming.

He's going, if you deny the flesh, you basically deny your whole salvation, that nothing actually happened.

Isn't the Bible so cool?

So this is how the church would work.

False teachings would arise, the apostles and the church would defend the gospel, the church preserves the apostolic teaching, and then the creeds would summarize that apostolic faith.

The creeds were based on scripture, but they themselves were not scripture, they were written to protect what the scripture teaches.

Point three The church preserved truth through faithful confession.

In the early fourth century, a heresy called Arianism emerged, taught by a guy named Arius.

If there's one thing you don't want to be named after, it's going to be a heresy.

Like the guy who like invented the Philips screwdriver must have been so pumped.

Named Philip, I'm assuming.

He's like, hey, I've got a screwdriver, and the guy who invented the flat screwdriver is like, dang it.

Arianism is Arianism is the belief that Jesus, the Son of God, is the highest created being, not God himself.

We're just gonna change it just a little bit.

That's what Arian did.

And Arian was a, he was a, or Arias, he was a um, he wasn't a worship leader per se.

He was a bishop, but what he would do is he would take the his own theology and he would say that Jesus was a created being and he would put it to song and poetry.

And if we know anything about songs and poetry, we remember lyrics easily, and it began to spread like wildfire amongst the early church.

So Constantine is the emperor at the time, he just made Christianity legal 12 years, like 10 to 12 years prior to this.

And he said, he said, okay, Christianity is legal.

Before that point, there was such it was the worst persecution that the church had ever gone through, ever.

And he says he's starting to see the split in the church.

Constantine is is uh is said that, hey, Christianity is good, we're good with it, but y'all are now running different uh directions.

I'm gonna call the bishops and y'all can figure this out.

So they gather at the council of Nicaea.

Now, if you're on TikTok, they're gonna tell you the council of Nicaea invented the whole Bible, it didn't.

Don't listen to TikTok.

Oh my goodness.

Just when you see some of that stuff, well, isn't it funny that someone says something on TikTok and everyone thinks it's true?

My goodness, I'll get so heated talking about that in and of itself.

But but uh at this council, these bishops would arrive with eyes gouged out, with hands that were boiled that they couldn't use these hands, crippled, losing limbs because of the persecution that they they that they went through 12 years prior.

They used to be exiled and now they were back to go and lead their churches.

When these guys show up, they bear the scars of the Christ who was crucified, and they bear the scars of their defense of this Christ.

So when they show up, they don't show up as academics and they go, Hey, we're gonna debate a little bit over here.

They don't do that, they show up and they go, I gave my life for this thing.

I was ready to die for this gospel.

No one is going to change what the apostles have turned down.

We're going to debate, we're gonna figure this out, and eventually they debate.

Athanasius is the guy who's like heading the whole thing, and he says, Arianism is a heresy.

They they have their debates and they condemn Arianism right there, and they write the Nicene Creed.

And the Nicene Creed was developed to sh to defend the divinity of Jesus and the substance, the nature of Jesus.

That's why they invented it.

I've got some scriptures for every line that you can see how the Bible confirms.

Everything that's in the Nicene Creed.

This is the one I want you to focus on because this was.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, begotten from the Father before all ages, meaning he was not created.

God from God, light from light, true God from true God, begotten, not made.

Take that, Arius.

Of the same essence as the Father, through him all things were made.

And they go through.

And then, so prior to the Nicene Creed, the question was, who is Jesus?

After the Nicene Creed, the question is, well, who's the Holy Spirit?

And then they expand the Nicene Creed a couple years later, and they they essentially say, Hey, the Holy Spirit, based on the scriptures, the Holy Spirit is God.

They are all God in three persons, and that's where we get Trinity Trinity from.

But the Nicene Creed contains over 92 biblical allusions and quotations.

It was never intended to replace scripture, it was uh written to summarize what the scripture teaches.

So the question that we have, we wrestle with this fourth point, and that is that every generation must confess the real Jesus again.

Creeds defend the scriptures succinctly, and to be a Christian is to confer to affirm orthodox beliefs that the church has held for years.

Jesus said the gates of hell would not prevail against the church.

And yes, the church has had issues throughout its years, of course.

Because sin still runs rampant in this world.

The church has needed to be reformed, the church still needs to reform.

We should always be a reforming church.

What does reforming mean?

We go back to scripture.

We go back to scripture.

So you may be looking and you go, why should I care about the creeds?

Because of this.

Most Christians will never read Athanasius, the guy who defended the gospel against Arian.

Most Christians won't study Greek, but every Christian needs to know who Jesus is.

The creeds are gifts from the church saying we wrestled with scripture.

Here is the faith that the apostles delivered.

The reason we talk about creeds is because it protects us from counterfeits.

If someone presents a counterfeit gospel or a counterfeit religion or something like that, we could go, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.

We've got the creeds.

This is what the church has taught for centuries.

It's our responsibility to pass this on and to defend this.

So, what does this look like?

In the same way I look at my kids in the moments where they get out of out of alignment with our values as a family, and I pull them back in.

You need to get this in you.

Talk about this with your kids, parents.

Because the world is going to be pulling, and the world is going to say, Oh, did your parents tell you that?

Oh, Jesus wasn't really resurrected.

There's no evidence for that.

My friends, there is an empty tomb.

There's a lot of evidence.

Your kids' first understanding of who Jesus is will come from you.

You don't have to have every biblical answer out there or anything like that, but you need to have this in you so you can guard it against the enemy of your souls.

The key the creeds give us a shared identity.

But the enemy of our souls has an identity too, and that is deceiver.

Someone who deliberately misleads or tricks others, causing to believe them something in something that is untrue.

We could say this that the enemy is a chooser, a heretic.

I just don't want you to believe in the resurrection.

Or he can go, that's totally fine.

You can believe in the resurrection.

I just don't want you to believe that he was actually man.

Oh, you want to believe that he was man?

I just don't want you to believe that he is God.

Oh, you don't want to believe, you want to believe that he is God.

Well we'll talk about how he was promoted to being a God later on.

That's what the enemy wants to do.

Why would we walk the broken path when the truth is clearly laid out for us, defended and guarded by the generations of saints that came before us?

Our fight is for orthodoxy, right belief, good teaching, and to be faithful to the message of the apostles that the apostles uh passed on.

Because at the end of the day, the next generation needs to hold something faithful.

So we contend for the faith as a church.

The next generation needs to receive what the apostles have handed down so faithfully.

That's why the creeds matter.

So we come to the end of the series, cults and counterfeits.

How do you wrap up this whole series?

I heard a story or uh it was it was Dr.

Tim Killer who was quoting Dr.

Martin Lloyd Jones, and now you can listen to me quoting him, quoting him, and then you can quote me one time.

And he said this that the gospel is not good advice, it's good news.

In the ancient times when uh an invading army would come into a country, the king would all of a sudden uh send me uh he would send military advisors into the town, and these military advisors would go, hey, this is what you need to do.

Prepare, we're under attack.

You need to do prepare this, do this, do this, do this, and everyone runs into a panic and they start doing stuff.

But on the flip side of that, if this if this king defeated this invading army, he would send in not military advisors, he would send in heralds, messengers.

Timkella calls them good newsers, and they would go, Good news! There was an invading army, but the king defeated it.

We're good, and they go, What do we need to do?

He goes, Nothing, just live like you're free in accordance to the freedom that you've been given.

That's it, that's it.

Now, of course, Christianity, in order for us to be Christian, yes, there are things that we are going to do, but that doing comes out of a place of what I've already received.

I don't do the good stuff so that salvation happens.

I do the good stuff because the Spirit lives in me and he is refining me.

And if I'm honest with you, it is so much harder.

Every other religion and counterfeiting cult, and unfortunately, many churches, when they talk about salvation, they're gonna talk about it as advice.

Many cult uh cults out there are going to present themselves as the leader who goes, Hey, I received this new revelation.

This is what you need to do, this is the way of salvation.

You need to do this and this and this.

And Jesus goes, No, no, no, I am not showing you the way.

I am the way, I am spiritual reality that came down to you because you couldn't come up to me.

So I came down to you to be the way that you would come to know me and that you would be made right with God.

That is what it means.

And if I'm honest with you, it is terrifying to trust.

I would much rather be doing stuff because at least I could always point to what I had done.

Oh, I'm a Christian because of that, that, that, that, that.

And it's really difficult to stand and go, I've got nothing to give.

I've got nothing to give.

I've got nothing to earn, I've got nothing to work for, I've got nothing of that.

All I did is I received.

Are you being changed?

Yeah, I'm being changed, but it's not up to me, and that's tough.

That's tough.

So at the end of this series, I have got the greatest news for you.

Christ has risen from the dead, it is paid full, it is finished.

All you need to do is receive.

Can we stand to our feet?

Oh yeah.

Oh yeah, they know what time it is.

I want to give someone an opportunity to come into a relationship with Jesus.

Step into this relationship, receive salvation.

Ryan, is it that simple?

I guess it is.

Because every time we've tried to make it complicated, it just doesn't work out for us.

So, yeah, it's simple.

It's simple.

Ryan, is it easy?

I can't answer that question.

It's the hardest thing I've ever done.

But I'll tell you, I've never met someone who truly came into a relationship with Jesus who regretted it.

So I'm gonna ask that we're gonna bow our heads, close our eyes, we're gonna say this prayer out loud for the benefit of those who are coming to Jesus for the very first time.

Repeat after me, Lord Jesus, I come to you, a sinner, in need of a savior.

I turn from my sin.

Thank you for dying on the cross, for washing away my sins, for being raised to life, so that I could have life.

I choose you now.

Help me as I learn to love you, help me as I learn to follow you.

If you just prayed that prayer, giving your life over to Jesus, I'm gonna ask on the count of three that you shoot your hand in the air.

It's bold.

We are in the body.

This is a big decision that you've made, and it's the best decision you've ever made.

On the count of three, raise your hand if that's you.

One, two, three.

If that's you, raise your hand.

Come on, church, let's celebrate.

Yes, let's go, let's go! Let's go!

It's so good.

We love you, church.
