Dale McDonald: Welcome to Atlin Family Church. I'm so happy you joined me today. I'm going to be most likely sipping from one of my favorite cups, Atlin BC. So I hope that by now you know that it's pretty informal around our cabin and in our church. so if you haven't grabbed your your beverage, you better hurry. So Again, I'm so happy you connected with me today. if you don't know, I'm Pastor Dale and with Atlin Family Church and today I'm gonna be teaching on what I believe to be the number one source or reason for hesitation that we sometimes face. It's it can cause lack of progress, as far as experiencing life goals, maybe our aspirations for life. most importantly though. God's direction for our life. so I do hope that you stick with me to the end. It could be a little longer, may end up being a two part series. We'll see. we'll just leave it in the Lord's hand. So I do want to start with prayer because all the messages are important, we really want to bring God into everything we do. including our teaching. So I just begin with Father, we thank you for every person that will hear this message today, tomorrow and into the future. And Father we pray that the words that you have given me would be planted into their heart, would cause faith to come and that the growth would come, that the hearers of the word your word would then be able to act on it, would see progress, would see the the strength that you provide to them from your word. And and Lord, we just give you all the glory, we give you the honor for everything that we do as a Christian. Lord, we know that you only want the best for us. That your love is why you did Everything you did for us, even dying on the cross. And so Father, as we take your word, we believe your word, we plant it into our heart, we speak it out our mouth, we expect to see your word come to pass in our life. And we give you all the thanks and the glory for that, Father. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen. Amen. So getting back to the message, the number one obstacle or reason. That most of us have experienced when facing an opportunity, I believe, at least once. but unfortunately for some it might be many times. It might be worse yet, a continual life cycle. And that's what I'm really hoping this message will break that. You know, when we see something that's happening over and over and over, hopefully we ask ourselves the question, why? What what am I doing wrong? What can I do different to stop that cycle? And then, you know, going forward, we walk in that new experience. That's our goal, right? To get started, I have a question for you. If I could remove the one thing that has held you back or delayed your dreams, would you want to discover what that is? I know I certainly would, especially when I if I have clear direction from God. I've prayed, He's given me the wisdom, and there's still something that's causing me to hesitate or worse yet, stall. I'd want to know what that is. Don't you? So can I get real with you? I'm gonna anyway. No one can remove the source or the reasons that have held you back, or in this case the reason that's held you back. No one can do that. Not your spouse, not your best friend, not your pastor. Ouch, pastors. I can't remove that one thing. That has been holding you back. Here it is. You are the only person that can effectively deal with this debilitating force in your life. I'm gonna say it again. You are the only person that can effectively deal with the debilitating force in your life. If you're taking notes, I would write that one down. And from the title of this message, you've already figured it out most likely. Is fear holding you back? You may already know that it's not a new revelation to you that you've dealt with this. That's okay. There's always more we can learn, and then we can lessen the effect of fear in our life. I really encourage you to watch this video to get a full understanding of why we hesitate in life and more importantly what we can do to keep moving forward. Are you with me? So today let's address the fear factor. Okay. we all deal with the fear factor to some extent. But depending on the scope of our knowledge, or even our past experiences related to the current situation or decision or opportunity that we're currently facing, it'll be different for each of us. The awareness of fear to some degree will be the same with each of us. But here's the key. How we deal with it will set us apart from one another. I'm hoping with today's message you get some tools as to set you apart so that you become a leader, an influence to those that are around you when they're dealing with fear. So on that thought or that image that I just gave you, who we hang out with and their influence in our lives, their personalities perhaps, our pre previous experience can come into play, our training, through our lifetime, they can all be significant factors when dealing with fear. And for most Christians, a big one is our faith maturity. You know, what level are we in the knowledge of God's word, the Bible? So all of these factors combined will determine the effect of fear on each of us when we're facing a situation. It'll also have an influence concerning the fear factor, as I've mentioned. And as a result, we'll all move forward at a varied pace or not at all. That's that's what we're working to to avoid, right? We want to keep moving with the things of God and what He's told us to do. but unfortunately the fact is some people when they face fear, they'll actually retreat. They'll lose ground. They'll move backwards. And, you know, when concerning their life progress or development and it's all based on the perceived situation or decision they're facing and how fear is influencing that whole situation. So today I want to start or continue with my definition of fear. So first of all, you may not know it, fear is a spirit. We see that in the Word of God. Fear will cause a universal human reaction, including some or all of these bodily responses. Emotional swing, flood of aroused feelings, aroused awareness, and often an involuntary. physical body reaction triggered by the thought or of a manifestation of a perceived immediate or future threat or danger in all forms. real or imagined. I'm gonna read that again. That that is a lot. So again this is my definition. Fear is a spirit. You've got to keep that That in mind front and center. and this is according to the Word of God. fear will cause a universal human reaction, including some or all of these bodily responses, an emotional swing or flood of aroused feelings, aroused awareness of your situation and surroundings. I just added that one. And often an involuntary physical body relax reaction, hair raising. Well, my hair doesn't raise the back of my neck. You can figure that one out. But you know, you'll feel it. and it's all triggered by the thought of can start up here in our mind, or the actual manifestation of a perceived immediate or future threat or danger of all forms, like whether it's bodily harm, loss of material things or loss of life. Lots of loved ones, all of the above. And here's the thing it can be real or imagined. So it's a pretty big door for Satan to work in our lives when we don'tdealwith fear and we if we're not operating in faith. it really does matter. So my question to you would be when life happens, or you know, say you face an unexpected situation or a challenge, Have you experienced fear? have you sensed fear? Has you know that come come you know, it's hard to explain, but in that moment, I I believe all of us have at some point or another. you may not put the weight on it that others do, or it may you may not allow it to affect what's going on in your outside world, but inside I believe we all face it at some point in our lives and quite often actually. So when you sense fear, when it like say when an opportunity arises or you face a sometimes it's a major decision. especially if you don't have all the information. So those are all opportunities to all of a sudden, fear is there. You have to deal with it. So I think If you answer honestly yes, then I believe this message will give you insight and more importantly, strategy when you face fear in the future. Does that sound like something you're looking for? I hope so. but you know Th just to set the situation up, the structure for this teaching. So maybe your prayer has been that you want change for some aspect of your life. But as soon as the excitement of change or possibility comes, fear comes. And you know what? That's a normal experience or reaction. It's unfortunately it's a human condition that we all deal with. And you know For example, maybe it's going to college or getting married. If you're married, then maybe the decision to have children that can be a big one. Maybe it's a career change or an advancement or maybe moving to a new living location. maybe it's whether you should check out that new church in town. And yeah, even God type decisions, or I put it God ordained opportunities that would be a blessing to you, you may still Have to deal with fear. That's the reality. I would say, actually, I would say God's prompting can bring the most opportunity to deal with fear. It seems, I don't know if you notice this, but it seems God's plan for our life is often a stretch for us. Right? often these the steps He's asking us to take. we're we're not always comfortable with that, you know? And that's good. That's because he wants the very best for us. we need to stretch. We need to grow in him. And that's that's a key there. It's not us doing the steps, it's him working through us so that we're enabled to take those steps. Right? So getting back in our message, now that we know what fear is. Where does fear come from and what causes it? you know, we need to be aware of all of it. And I'll actually I'll rephrase the question. Who causes fear? Remember I mentioned the word of God states fear is a spirit. Our enemy the devil, I'll give him this. He's very good at deception. He's very good at lies, at reminding us of our past failures. And it's you know what, as I mentioned before, it's an open door To Satan to introduce fear into our minds. If wait, this is it, if we dwell on the negative thoughts up here, or you know the perhaps a perceived danger or the the threat, it gives opportunity for the thought to grow and can lead to paralysis. So the battle is up here, it's in our mind. Are we gonna dwell on the lie? that he's put in our mind, or are we gonna dwell on and meditate on theword which is the truth of the situation? We have a choice to make. It's up to us. And like I'd mentioned, it can actually if we do dwell on the negative and the lies that he puts it into our mind, it can cause paralysis. We can just freeze. We can do do nothing which it can be over time can still be deadly to the plan of God for our lives. So keep that in mind. So, some examples of fear that can hinder or affect progress in our life. there can be the fear of failure. That can be a big one for some. The fear of our own limitations affecting the outcome. The fear of repeating previous missed opportunities. That's where he's putting r you know, reminding us of our past failures. The fear of disappointment or embarrassment if your or others' expectations are not met. another a lot of people struggle with. The fear of what others will think or say, the fear of not being accepted or liked, the fear of letting your loved ones down based on your performance. Action or decision. And there again, keeping in mind it's God working through you. It's not up to you for the outcome. Yeah, I heard saying once, the duty is ours, the results are God's. If you're taking notes, you could write that down. And I didn't come up with that. I can't remember who I it I got it from, so I can't give proper credit, but it's a good one. So You know, getting back to some of my examples, the fear of not knowing how it'll all work out. And a lot of times we don't have all the answers. Sometimes we have to take that step in faith, and then more knowledge will come, more awareness. yeah, that's why they call it faith. the fear of loss of control. the fear of or based on vain imaginations. Notice the repeating anchor or weight that we carry when we're contemplating change. you know, and it's the same for whether it's a situation or decision. The anchor is fear. So if you're taking notes, fear is an anchor in life Faith is our sail. So one will hold you back and one will carry you forward towards your your destination. So very important to get the tools and the knowledge so that you can take control when you're making that decision. Do I listen to the lies? Do I listen to God's wisdom and apply my faith to that? We're in the middle. We're the ones that are in control. One will hold you back like an anchor and the other will set you towards your destination. unfortunately I'd mentioned before, fear can paralyze even the strongest people. You know, they their personality they may come across really strong, but certain situations will just paralyze them. They'll stop. they do have control over it. That's that's the thing. We we see it in the word, it's very plain. So here again, if you're making notes, don't let fear stop you you may have to write that down and keep it in front of you. But that's the key. Don't let it stop you. you may say, it's easy for you to say you're not me. And it's true, I'm not you. But Trust me, I've struggled with fear in the past, like I'd mentioned, we all do. I still can struggle with fear if my guard is down. I've been building my faith over my lifetime, but it doesn't matter what level of faith you are, you still need to be aware of fear and know how to deal with it. Now it does get easier over time as we build our faith and know the source. so that's something to look forward to. If you're not there yet, you can be. God's word is amazing in helping us in every area that we're weak as a human. Some people go through life with a continual cycle. God speaks, fear comes, and the result, as I've mentioned, is no action or paralysis on their part. The the blessing suggestion, you know, when we hear God and we know what's from God, if we never take a step to receive it due to fear, you know, we typically we come up with excuses, and they may be different excuses, but they are that's all they are. Ultimately it is fear that is the substance or the reason that we've had those hesitations. Okay, now we know fear is why we hesitate or don't move forward. we know who fear is from or what fear is. How about we get into the word and see what God has to say on the topic? So if you're making notes or taking notes, born again Christians can have the confidence to take the next step, even if we do not have all the answers. I'll even add, often we won't have all the answers. God gives us something to do, something to to work on in our lives. We don't know the whys, but as we step into it, it we'll become more aware of that. And True Christians are created to be led by God. We're to pray in our understanding, and that just means what we know about the situation or the future, and we're to pray in the spirit, and that's when we pray in the spirit in tongues, that's praying God's perfect will for the decision or the situation. And I always encourage people, you know, first of all, this is a starting point, seek his wisdom and never rely on our own. I mean, that should be a given, but I do want to say that. God is smarter than every one of us put together. So, you know, some some decisions, you know, it it may not make any natural sense. Some decisions are small and that's okay. God gives us the opportunity to make mistakes and we may pray and not actually hear clear direction. But Most often with God, some decisions will not make any sense to our natural mind. We're going to go, was that God? Did you know, did we hear him right? until we take the step. That's what he's asking. You know, he'll give us information as mentioned, and we take that step, and then we'll start to see the outcome of that decision. That process will often take dealing with fear, as I'd mentioned. So as a reminder, I'll also add that this message today, it's on dealing with fear. I'm referring primarily to Christians that are seeking God's best for their lives. If you're not a Christian, unfortunately you do not have the access to the gift of authority over evil spirits that we have once we're born again. You'll still sense fear, but you'll lack the power to deal with it. So, you know, that's I do I just need to put that in there. Christians and non-Christians, we deal with fear differently. if you have any questions about what I just said or any part of this or any message from Atlin Family Church, I encourage you to connect through our website, alinfamilyChurch dot ca. Lord love hearing from our local or online family of followers. So let's go back to the message. Remember earlier I'd mentioned that you are the only person that can deal with fear in your life. our friends and family can help, but that's only if they're strong in their faith. And they know how to deal with fear. If they happen to be in fear, then they're only gonna hinder our walk in the Lord. As a Christian, you can decide whether fear will rule or faith will rule in your life. Referring to my previous example, will the anchor hold you back or will you sail where the word of God takes you? And another way I'd like to put it this way. It's like pouring water on a fire. The more water that's applied to the fire, the less the fire can exist. The more faith applied to the situation, the less fear can exist. I hope you see that. Remember, fear comes from Satan, the devil, and he is our enemy. So once we know and recognize the source of fear, we can deal with it. Or deal with him. That's a better way to put it. we see this in John ten. I'll read the New Living Translation. The thief's purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. Notice it's saying steal and, kill and. It's all the above. Like he that's his whole job title. But it goes on to say, and this is Jesus speaking, my purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life. Love it. And I I personally believe, you can argue with me on this if you want. I believe that a rich and satisfying life is knowing who you are in Christ and the tools he offers us as Christians. If we know that, then doesn't matter what life throws at us, right? We have the tools, we know who we are, and we're gonna get through it. Right? So if you're taking notes again. You ready? Faith in the Word of God is the antidote to conquer fear. Read it again. Faith in the Word of God is the antidote to conquer fear. I'll put it this way. an example. It's like when we when we recognize fear and we learn to block it, it's it's like blocking a spam caller. We've we've all been spammed on our cell phones. once you block the number, it's no longer a distraction. It out of sight, out of mind. Christian faith in God and his promises removes And blocks fear from our lives. we need to always be growing in faith so that we have that tool, that we have the the word inside of us for the day that we need it. Because we will. And you know what? The good news is you've already taken a step to remove fear from your life just by hearing this message. so I guess I could ask you, are you feeling fearless? I've said this before in other messages, but in Christ we're superheroes. We can do everything that he said we can do in the word. as we develop our faith we put the cape on, right? So, every time we hear about God's love, his promises, his protection, his son Jesus, his word and his plan for our life, faith comes. And we see that in Romans ten seventeen of the New Living Translation. So faith comes from hearing. That is hearing the good news about Christ. So when we hesitate to move forward or take that step in life because of fear. It's not the fear we need to focus on, it is the faith that we need to focus on. You see that? One replaces or I I'd like to say completely dispels the other. Faith will completely overpower and we need to get to that place any fear in our life. Right? Satan is a defeated foe. So we need to be the one that is putting him where he needs to be. and the Bible says, under our feet. And so I cannot encourage you enough to talk faith, not fear, from this point on in your life. Amen. you know, God's word, it's a total record of his love, his provision all towards us. It's a free gift, but it's all received by faith. I'd like to read Hebrews eleven six of the New Living Translation. It is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that He rewards those who sincerely seek Him. Wow. I'm gonna read and now in Hebrews eleven one out of the New King James Version now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. always love that one. And in same scripture, New Living Translation. Faith shows the reality of what we hope for. It is the evidence ofthingswe cannot see. So as we build our faith, we can put that substance, we can put that evidence of the truth against the fear. It's it's written, it's the word of God. We need to practice it, we need to get used to getting in our heart, saying it out of our mouth, and renewing our mind so that That becomes the reality and not the fear. I read that same verse in Hebrews 11 1 out of the Amplified Classic Version because it amplifies it. Now faith is the assurance, the confirmation, the title deed of the things we hope for, being proof of things we do not see, the conviction of their reality, faith perceiving as real fact. what is not revealed to the senses. So our faith goes so much further than what we can perceive in the natural faith is what we apply to an unknown future, if if I can say it that way. So when God speaks to our spirit about a new career, or maybe self-improvement suggestion, I have found a supernatural peace will always accompany that message. That's kind of a test. You hear something new, do you have peace with it? Even if peace and then fear. peace will accompany anything that God gives us. He gives us a supernatural aspect of peace with that. I believe one reason is because God is love and in God there is no fear. The reality is it doesn't matter whether it's a written word or the spoken word of God. Either one, Satan comes immediately to steal it, according to the word. His primary method of operation is fear and deception. So, you know, he'll bring that sense that we all sense, and then he'll lie to us. And then that creates the thoughts in our mind, like I'd mentioned earlier, that he would really like us to dwell on. And we we just have to realize that and Stop those thoughts immediately. So if you're taking notes again. Satan's power is given to him based on our willingness to yield to fear. Or on our ignorance of God's word to know that we can resist. He's hoping that we don't know that. He's hoping that he can continue to rock our world. That's and he's got all the time to do it. that's why it's so important to really get a grasp of the fear factor and how to deal with it. we see in Mark Chapter four, verse fifteen, I'll read it of the New Living. We see how quickly really that Satan does his job. We think, well, you know, if we kinda ignore it, it might go away. Well, as we read here. When they hear so that's at the moment that we hear the word, Satan comes immediately and take to take away the word that was sown in their hearts. So that's pretty quickly, that immediately. So remember, fear is the spirit of the enemy and it's based on deception. He is the father of lies according to the word. and fear grows when we dwell on it. If we meditate on it, we think about the thoughts that Satan's introduced into our minds, it will grow. Likewise, if we meditate, embrace and think about the the word of God, faith will grow. And faith is based on the truth, so when we know the truth, fear has no power in our lives. The word of God is the truth, capital T, capital T. and when we apply it to every decision, every situation, every opportunity we face, when we take that time to invest into our lives, to know the truth of God's word, it's like having a fully charged battery. ifyouare into these electric vehicles now. Okay, just imagine You got it plugged in, it's fully charged, it's ready anytime we need it. Or old school, it's a full tank of fuel, ready to go at any time. That's our faith. And that's where we need to be. if we wait for the time that we need it when a situation is upon us, it can be too late to really have that extra power that we need. you know, to suddenly go to the word. I always suggest you do, regardless, but it's just so much better to be precharged. and we're actually instructed in the word to resist fear. We have we have a part to play. Satan I found Satan isn't stopped with passive faith. faith is an action word. We have a part to play. We must apply and enforce it. Enforce God's word because that's where the authority comes. And I suggest verbally say it out loud and as often as required. sometimes it's not that Satan forgets, it's just that he's very persistent. So as we say it, he hears it, but so do we. So You know, we that's part of renewing our mind. It's part of getting those words out to affect our world around us. So another question I have for you, does fear seem like a mountain at times in your life? It has for me. It's like, wow, here we go again. but we're instructed in the word to speak to that mountain. I've mentioned it, I've touched on it, our words matter. Jesus tells us that it's very clear in the word that that mountain before us, and you can apply that to whatever that may be. It's just something bigger. Or it seems bigger than we are. Like, how do we get up around this, over this, whatever it is? But keep in mind we don't command people, but we can command the spirit that's working through people. Especially if it affects our life in an ungodly way. I want to get that point out again. We can and we should and we're instructed to actively resist fear. We have the authority. We have the authority in the name of Jesus as Christians to use his name, to use his word, and to speak to our mountain. Fear must be spoken to. And commanded to stand down, cease in our thoughts, and in our life. I mean it may sound a little strange when you first start doing this and hear it yourself, but that's what we're told and instructed in the word. We are to speak. Speak to the mountain, speak to fear, put it in its place, put him in his place. And we see this in Mark eleven twenty two and twenty four. And I'll read in the New Living Translation. When Jesus said to his disciples, Have faith in God. I tell you the truth. You can say to this mountain, mayyou be lifted up and thrown into the sea. And it'll happen. But you must really believe it'll happen and have no doubt in your heart. That's talking about a strong faith. And going on in twenty four, I tell you, you can pray for anything. And if you believe that you received it, it will be yours. Wow. And remember, that's Jesus speaking. I encourage you, look it up in the Bible. Anytime Jesus speaks to us, we should pay attention. So, again, resisting fear is by speaking the word of God. And I'll put in louder than the thoughts of our mind, when we speak faith. God's word out loud in Jesus' name our spiritual enemy must flee. We see it in the Word. in Second Corinthians ten, verses three through four, New Living Translation, we are human, but we don't wage war as humans do. We use God's mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments. Remember I mentioned the lies in our brain that He puts in there? They're false arguments, and we use the Word of God to break those down. I'm hoping you're getting this. That's my prayer. I can't say it enough. We can resist Satan. we need to resist him and the fear that he tries to bring on us or into our lives. And another example we can see in first John four, verses sixteen through eighteen, New Living Translation. We know how much God loves us. And we put our trust in his love. God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them. And as we live in God, our love grows more perfect. So we will not be afraid of the day of judgment. But we can face Him with confidence because we live like Jesus here in the world. There's a key. Jesus spoke. Every time the enemy tried to tempt him or tried to trick him, he always said, It is written. And here we see it in the word, we can have confidence because we live like Jesus here in the world. So reading on in verse eighteen, Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear. And Christ is within us. He is perfect love. We can. if you're taking notes, put that in capital capital C, capital A, capital N. We can stand firm against the enemy because we see it in the word. Another example, first Peter Chapter five verses five through nine New Living Translation God opposes the proud, but he gives grace to the humble. So humble yourselves unto the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor. Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you. Stay alert, watch out for the great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion. It doesn't say that he is a roaring lion. He pretends to be one. Reading on, he's looking for someone to devour. So verse nine, stand firm against him, be strong in your faith. So, you know, again, the devil's looking for someone with weak faith, without faith, someone who really doesn't know the power of being in Christ. That's who he's looking for. Don't let it be you. As children of the Most High Christ Jesus, we have the power to resist the enemy. And we can be confident in every step we take in the plan of God for our lives as we grow our faith. another scripture I'd like to read is 2 Timothy chapter 1 verse 7. I'm gonna read out of the Amplified Classic version. for God did not give us a spirit of timidity, of cowardice, of craven or cringing or fawning fear. But he has given us a spirit of power and love and calm. And well balanced mind and discipline and self-control. Well balanced mind. That may seem foreign to you know if you've been struggling with fear, because that's where, again, that's where the battle is. We can have a well balanced mind as we grow our faith. And we can say again with confidence, the Lord is my helper, so I will not have fear. You see that in the word God has said, I will never fail you, I will never abandon you. So we can have that confidence. The Lord is my helper, I will have no fear. What can your people do to me? That's Hebrews thirteen, five through six, New Living Translation. Notice that it says, What can your people do to me? Did you see that? You know, look again. Our enemy Satan is a spirit. God is a spirit. Both work through people in the realm that we live on, you know, Earth, as we know it. so here it is. I want you to see this. Don't be surprised if people are involved in vain imaginations that initiate fear. And that's just basically ideas or thoughts that cause that open door for fear to come. Satan will work through anyone that's willing, anyone that's caught off guard. Your thoughts can magnify fear if you face it alone. That's exactly what the enemy would like, is to get you off by yourself. So this I wanna put it out there. Atlin Family Church is here for you. Doesn't matter what you're going through, you know, at times we all need a friend, right? so just wanna put this in right now. Let us know if you have any questions about this or any other message really online that we've put out. on Atlin Family Church Engaged Faith.
