  1. Welcome to the It's Life podcast where conversations about faith meet real life.

  2. We welcome to the set today, Pastor Daniel Etheridge.

  3. He is our Hampton campus pastor.

  4. Y'all, we're a ministry of Liberty Live Church in Hampton Rhodes, Virginia.

  5. If you didn't know, and we're so glad you're here for today's topic about fasting.

  6. Are you ready?

  7. Yes.

  8. Okay.

  9. But before we jump in, we have to have a little bit of fun.

  10. Since we're talking about fasting, if you could eat just one meal the rest of your life or one restaurant, what would it be?

  11. I mean, I'm on a kick right now.

  12. And it no matter where you're watching from in the country, you have this restaurant.

  13. Oh.

  14. And I don't know if you're a fan or not, um, because I've never really been into it until now.

  15. Really?

  16. Outback steakhouse has a blooming chicken.

  17. It is the exact same thing.

  18. They put the bloomin' onion in, same batter, but fried chicken.

  19. Nice.

  20. And they have the little Aussie sauce on the side.

  21. It it's kind of my go-to right now.

  22. That does sound good.

  23. And I'm I'm a big fan.

  24. Well, since we're talking about fasting, how many Aussie chickens are you gonna get between now and the next week?

  25. Honestly, probably a few.

  26. Probably a few.

  27. That's hilarious.

  28. Our our go-to every night of the week is chicken.

  29. We just do it different ways.

  30. We do it different ways, you know, but it's it's a go-to at our house.

  31. Okay.

  32. I love it.

  33. Classic.

  34. Now that we're all hungry, are you ready to talk about fasting?

  35. All right.

  36. What is it?

  37. I think that's probably a question so many people have.

  38. You know, here at Liberty, we do 21 days of prayer every January and every August.

  39. And with that, we talk about fasting, like prayer and fasting.

  40. There's a fasting component, you know.

  41. Um, but what does that really look like?

  42. Does do we all need to fast?

  43. Uh, could we fast from different things?

  44. So just basic.

  45. What is it?

  46. What's a fast?

  47. Well, I think it's important to realize most spiritual disciplines that we have, um, many existed prior to Christ.

  48. And uh, so fasting in its most simple form is just abstaining from food.

  49. And it existed before Christ as a practice.

  50. I I think you can look at things like baptism, fasting, and actually see the Jewish root of it.

  51. And then you can see how Jesus comes and really redeems it as a practice, gives it spiritual sense and purpose.

  52. And honestly, fasting is more popular than it's ever been, I think.

  53. Right on on uh maybe in in workouts, in dieting, yeah, intermittent fasting, uh, all these things.

  54. Uh, but I I just want to get it back to its root, the simplicity of what it's meant to be.

  55. Fasting is abstaining from food for spiritual purpose.

  56. Okay.

  57. And I think that's the key distinction, right?

  58. Because honestly, if you're just abstaining from food for health reasons, which by the way, yes and amen, uh-huh.

  59. I think there's there's great research on what intermittent fasting does.

  60. I think uh you can see in all these health gurus and workout, you you can, you know, I'm clearly not into workout gurus, but you can see in all these different spheres of influence and online through social media people's interest in this topic.

  61. But if it's just for the sake of getting in shape or losing weight, friend, you're you're you're not fasting, you're dieting.

  62. Amen.

  63. You're just starving yourself or what?

  64. For physical purpose.

  65. Right, right.

  66. And and that's called a diet.

  67. Well, and they can be good.

  68. Yeah, it's interesting you say that because now that you've mentioned it, I do see like those things pop up on social media where it's like, put put in your age, and if you eat from this hour to this hour, then you'll have this shape or this shape or this shape.

  69. But isn't that just like the enemy?

  70. Like he always takes what God has intended and twists it into something worldly.

  71. Yeah, and and so really the goal of fasting, and I think the biblical root of fasting, you can see this over and over again.

  72. If you want to, if you want to go on the journey of biblical fasting, it's abstaining from food for the sake of being filled with the Spirit of God.

  73. It has to have the spiritual component.

  74. You're not just abstaining from something, you're being filled with something.

  75. Right.

  76. And something other than food.

  77. Uh, we know when we uh are hungry that in a very real way we're starving our physical flesh, our our body.

  78. Um instead of giving it its normal nutrients, we're we're now yearning for something greater, something else.

  79. And in in fasting, it's biblical fasting, beyond your physical flesh, you're trying to empty yourself of your your fleshliness, right?

  80. Of your sin, of passions that aren't of God, of pursuing the wrong things, of distractions.

  81. I I I uh think about all the time uh Papa Sam, my dad's mentor in the ministry, and and we learned so much from him growing up.

  82. He would always say the simplest things, but but he would say things like uh you only have so much capacity.

  83. You eat so much and then you're full.

  84. Right.

  85. And and he would say, as much as you're filled with the wrong things, you can never be filled with the right things.

  86. And I think the spiritual journey of fasting is about emptying yourself of the wrong things, right?

  87. Uh, of things that aren't of God, of things that are distractions from God.

  88. I think the simplest form and practice of it, and the thing we see over and over in scripture is fasting from food.

  89. From food.

  90. From food.

  91. Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, Matthew chapter four, um to be tempted, and he fasted for 40 days and 40 nights.

  92. I love that the next thing uh Matthew says in Matthew 4 is he was hungry.

  93. Like that is the purpose.

  94. You're you're emptying yourself physically, but for for a spiritual purpose and focus.

  95. Right.

  96. Okay, so talking food.

  97. Okay.

  98. A lot of times when we get into 21 days of prayer and we encourage folks to fast, we go through a whole list of different fasts you can do, right?

  99. Maybe you fast from social media, maybe you fast from just meat, maybe you fast from television or secular music or fill in the blank.

  100. So are you, would you make the argument that fasting from those other things don't have the same spiritual purpose or long-term effect?

  101. That's a great, that's a great question.

  102. So uh no, because I think the greater purpose of fasting is the spiritual component.

  103. So I think my real question is in whatever you're giving up, is it allowing you to pursue Christ in a greater capacity, greater way?

  104. This, the, the positive nature of fasting is more important.

  105. So, no, we don't have a verse that's like if you give up uh social media, you can focus on you know your walk with the Lord.

  106. Or uh, if you get away from the news cycle, your mind might be set on greater things.

  107. No, you don't have those verses, but they didn't have those things, right?

  108. Right.

  109. Um, I will say the spiritual discipline in scripture uh seems to come back to food, but but again, the greater goal is the spiritual fruit.

  110. With that said, there is something about the way God created your body that is connected to your spiritual life.

  111. And I think in many ways, the the physical is just a representation of what's happening in the spiritual.

  112. So um probably oversharing, but uh, I've been on a health journey of my own.

  113. I was struggling the last few years with some health issues.

  114. I started going through all this testing at the doctor, and they started running all these tests to figure out what was wrong.

  115. Uh I came back and between two of the uh testing cycles, I was six months apart, my numbers changed drastically.

  116. Like, wow, was gonna be diagnosed with autoimmune disease to not.

  117. And when I got there, the doctor was like, What have you changed?

  118. And I'm like, I don't really know.

  119. He said, Uh, have you done anything different?

  120. I said, you know, I've tried to eat healthier, but um I'm not that good at that.

  121. So I knew it wasn't in my heart.

  122. I knew it wasn't that.

  123. Yeah, uh he said, he he knows I'm a faster.

  124. He said, Have you been fasting?

  125. And it hit me.

  126. We went through 21 days of brand fasting.

  127. I said, Yes, absolutely.

  128. And he said, When you fast, there is something at the cellular level in your body that happens.

  129. And the first three days, bad things die off.

  130. You can go study this and look at this.

  131. I became overly fascinated with it because I realized something was happening physically that God meant in the spiritual.

  132. And on the third day, there's a turn.

  133. Doesn't that sound like the word?

  134. Three days.

  135. On the third day, there's a turn.

  136. Now, not only is your body killing off what's bad, but your body is actually generating good cells.

  137. You're coming to life.

  138. Wow.

  139. And something spiritually just I got I immediately got chills and I knew, okay, God, God made this, God designed this.

  140. Wow.

  141. Um, and I realized there is a physical component to what's happening spiritually.

  142. Um, my encouragement is if you have never gone on an actual food fast, you should do that journey.

  143. Just try it.

  144. You should do it.

  145. Um, in the Old Testament, some people get hyper focused on the Daniel fast.

  146. Um, that would be what we would call like a partial fast in some ways.

  147. Just like those are plant, right?

  148. Like from the ground, fruits, vegetables.

  149. Uh, but if you go back and read that passage, what he actually abstains from is um uh delicacies, which I think is such an interesting word, meat and wines.

  150. And I think he was really abstaining from things that people love the most.

  151. Uh interesting.

  152. So I don't know if if that passage was ever intended.

  153. If you're doing the Daniel Fast, praise God for that.

  154. I don't know if it was ever intended to just be like, okay, no, only greens, you know.

  155. Right.

  156. But um uh if God uses that, praise the Lord.

  157. But I think there was something deeper even there.

  158. He was giving up things he desired the most.

  159. Right.

  160. And things our flesh is naturally drawn to the most.

  161. And maybe that's where you need to come at your fast.

  162. What am I drawn to in my flesh the most?

  163. Maybe that's food.

  164. Uh, maybe it's a certain type of food.

  165. I'm gonna give up sweets or I'm gonna give up caffeine.

  166. Uh I mean, I'm not sure.

  167. I did that one 21 days of prayer.

  168. That's one of the hardest fasts I've ever done.

  169. In some ways, I think that was harder than a total fast.

  170. Um, my body had to go through withdrawals, headaches, all that type of stuff, um, which is the natural die-off symptoms of those first few days.

  171. Right.

  172. But um, whether it's it's food or or drink or something else in your life, I think the question is, what are you most drawn to in your flesh?

  173. And in this season of your life, can you give up the things you're drawn to most for something you're drawn to more?

  174. Can I give up things I want because I want something greater?

  175. Namely, Jesus, his word, his direction, his presence, his guidance, his peace, his joy, his fruit.

  176. So um I maybe that's a good approach for people who want to figure out what to give up in order to fast.

  177. I uh had never done a total fast until college.

  178. That was the first time in my life I did a total fast.

  179. And I had never done it for any length of time until recently.

  180. And I I just really believe uh that there are people, even listening to this podcast, that is your next step with the Lord.

  181. You've done different types of fast.

  182. What about a total fast?

  183. Could you just do water to see God?

  184. So you said just water.

  185. Does that include like juices?

  186. Could you juice or smoothies?

  187. Or we're getting real into like the nitty-gritty, you know, people always have these questions.

  188. Like of course, but then I feel like if we're asking these questions, is that part of our flesh still wanting to hold on and not really being ready to let go and completely fast?

  189. You know?

  190. Um interestingly enough, um, if you do some type of partial fast, that cellular effect in your body doesn't work.

  191. Interesting.

  192. If you're, for example, if you're putting creamer in your coffee.

  193. Right.

  194. If you're getting sugar from other sources, those because you have to be deprived of those things.

  195. Interesting.

  196. So uh in that sense, I would encourage anybody to do a three-day water fast medically that can, if you're taking medication or you know, there are reasons that you can't.

  197. That you can't.

  198. Um, but a lot of us make excuses.

  199. But three days of water, almost, almost, um uh the vast majority of people could do, uh, almost anybody uh could try that.

  200. If you have health concerns a hundred percent, like uh there are reasons that would prohibit people from doing different types of fast.

  201. Um, but also the length of time.

  202. So if you're doing three days versus seven days versus 20 days or 21 days, and there's a reason we do that number.

  203. Uh even secular science would say forming a habit takes 21 days.

  204. Takes 21 days.

  205. Um so 21 days or like biblically 40 is very significant.

  206. Um, I I think the longer you go, the more desperate you are to juice.

  207. Right.

  208. Uh, or to do some something else to give your body nutrients.

  209. Um are you even taking like vitamins or just water?

  210. Yeah.

  211. Um because sometimes I've even wondered, because you know, like those gummy vitamins, am I cheating right now and eating?

  212. Yeah, so insignificant.

  213. But yeah, I think the most important thing is you and God be on the same page.

  214. Right.

  215. If you if you and God make a plan and you're pursuing after him, and and you know that in your heart, and he knows that.

  216. Um, we don't have to get all legalistic with it.

  217. I think the beautiful thing about John the Baptist is he realized oh, the Jewish crowd, the Sadducees, the the Pharisees, the religious crowd has ruined um these spiritual practices that we were given.

  218. So he withdrew to the desert.

  219. This is not unique to John the Baptist, the Essenes, the Desert Fathers and Mothers, uh, the uh Quram community where we get Dead Sea scrolls.

  220. There were other people in that same time who were withdrawing saying, Oh, you're doing the practice, but you're missing the spiritual security.

  221. Right.

  222. And John the Baptist is very big, obviously through baptism, of um John the Baptizer, of redeeming that spiritual practice.

  223. But that's not the only one he was focused on redeeming because his disciples in Matthew 9 come to Jesus and say, Why do John's disciples fast?

  224. Uh-huh.

  225. And the Pharisees fast, but your disciples don't fast.

  226. And Jesus' answer is just so uh genuine and it obviously genuine but profound, because he says, uh, do you fast when the bridegroom is with you?

  227. You know, their wedding celebrations were would you fast?

  228. Would you mourn in the midst of a celebration?

  229. No, of course not.

  230. And what he's saying is, I'm here.

  231. They're so overwhelmed with what God's doing and and with what I'm teaching them.

  232. They don't need to fast right now.

  233. But there's a day coming when I won't be here.

  234. And he says in Matthew 9, they will fast then.

  235. He assumes everybody, every Christian is gonna do it.

  236. Why?

  237. Because in those days they'll long for him in his spirit.

  238. Wow.

  239. So even now that's what we're doing.

  240. That's what we're doing.

  241. We are we are redeeming the practice of fasting by longing for Jesus in our midst, by receiving his spirit in totality.

  242. I don't need anything like I need his spirit.

  243. I need to be filled with the fullness of his spirit.

  244. Right.

  245. So we empty ourselves of everything else, of our flesh, of our desires, of our sin.

  246. Some people, some people fast from sin.

  247. I always think this is beautiful, especially with young believers.

  248. I'm sorry, Jenny, I'm talking too much.

  249. But with with uh with young believers, they'll choose things to fast from.

  250. Like, I'm gonna fast from um getting drunk.

  251. It's like, huh.

  252. I knew a guy, a guy told me, uh, I'm gonna fast from weed.

  253. And this is what I love.

  254. The genuine practice, I'm like, yes and amen.

  255. But I knew he wasn't going back to it.

  256. You know, like you're gonna give up some things and you're never gonna want to go back.

  257. Right.

  258. Um there's a beauty at every level of entering into fasting, a brand new believer or somebody who's been doing this 40, 50, 60 years, God has more for you.

  259. Right.

  260. And in this season of fasting, he wants you to experience him at a greater level, at a greater reality.

  261. Tell us a little bit more about how you've experienced him as you fasted.

  262. Do you have like tangible story or testimony of your own experience?

  263. Probably too many to name.

  264. Honestly, probably too many to name.

  265. Um, most significantly, last year I did um 40 days for the first time.

  266. And it was it was tough.

  267. Yeah.

  268. Really, really genuinely hard for me.

  269. Um, I did it because I was desperate.

  270. I was just desperate for God.

  271. And you uh those are great moments to come into fasting.

  272. Some of you are praying for direction in life.

  273. Right.

  274. Fast.

  275. Uh some of you uh are are praying for revival and spiritual renewal.

  276. Um fast.

  277. Some of you need to overcome a besetting sin.

  278. Like the world presses you, you get angry, and you don't know why you get angry, you just get angry.

  279. It's like you need to overcome this one thing.

  280. And um Jesus uh tells the disciples, He's casting out a spirit.

  281. And the disciples come to him privately and say, uh, is this Mark?

  282. I believe this isn't Mark.

  283. Y'all look this up.

  284. It the the disciples come to him privately and say, Why couldn't why couldn't we uh why couldn't we cast that spirit out?

  285. And and Jesus said, This kind only comes out with prayer and fasting.

  286. Well, we know from our spiritual weapons they're they're not carnal, that's of the flesh.

  287. They're powerful to the pulling down of strongholds.

  288. What happens in your life when you fast is you get filled with the fullness of the spirit in a way that you're able to do and experience and see things in the spiritual realm that otherwise would not happen.

  289. So uh the most profound breakthroughs in my life over sin came during fasting.

  290. Wow.

  291. The most profound direction from God, when he's spoken in dreams and visions and through other people, came during seasons of fasting.

  292. My last 40 days was just about God, what are you doing?

  293. I just need your direction.

  294. I'm just desperate for you to do something.

  295. I don't want, I don't want to coast.

  296. And he called me to a 40-day fast.

  297. I knew he was, and I was like, I can't do this.

  298. I'm so thankful for a godly friend because I walked out of a Sunday service and this was not during 21 days of prayer, it was before.

  299. And I told AJ, God call me to a 40-day fast.

  300. There's no way.

  301. Pastor AJ.

  302. And uh he said, You can do it, and I'm doing it with you.

  303. Wow.

  304. And it gave me the I don't think I could have made it right, you know, without him doing it with me.

  305. And um I just I experienced God so I started having dreams and visions, and he started reminding me why he called me here and the direction that he had for us, and and uh, and some of you need that.

  306. And this, you know, talk about unlocking spiritual breakthrough in your life.

  307. This practice, like nothing else that I know, does that.

  308. Wow.

  309. Yeah.

  310. Yeah, it feels very like like there's this formula, right?

  311. And if you don't do this formula or I don't want to use the word magic because it's not magic, but you know what I'm saying.

  312. Like, like you said, you could only experience certain breakthroughs or visions or clear direction if you do what he's outlined to do, which is through prayer and fasting.

  313. Yeah.

  314. And really challenging yourself.

  315. I feel like that's where our flesh gets in the way is you at least I tend to think, oh, I could never do that.

  316. Right.

  317. Um, it feels impossible.

  318. Yes, right?

  319. It feels unattainable.

  320. Yeah.

  321. But it's not.

  322. No, no, not at all.

  323. And and I think you need to check your heart.

  324. And I I would because I've fasted for and not seen spiritual fruit from it.

  325. Right.

  326. And I really think there's a reality.

  327. You need to ask God to search your heart and show you what you can't see and what you don't know, because a lot of times we have secondary motivations.

  328. Yes.

  329. He has promised Jeremiah 29, 11 is what everybody quotes, but the very next two verses says, You will uh seek me and search for me with all of your heart, one of the most beautiful promises, and I will be found by you, declares the Lord.

  330. And um, I think a lot of times we fast because we want a specific answer.

  331. We fast because we want a specific outcome.

  332. We fast because we and and uh it's okay as secondary motivations to desire some of those things.

  333. But the reality is the Lord is what we desire among us.

  334. We want him.

  335. We want him above all else.

  336. And sometimes he doesn't answer like we think because he's given us the gift of himself.

  337. Sometimes he doesn't um uh do what we think he's gonna.

  338. Do because he wants us to know something of him that we would know no other way.

  339. I was just talking to a pastor today in a meeting, and he said, God took him to the words of the psalmist, I've known you through my infirmities.

  340. And so often we pray, okay, heal us, heal us.

  341. But what if God wants us to know him through sickness?

  342. Right.

  343. You know, so um I think we need to get back to a primary motivation of seeking God.

  344. I want you.

  345. I want you.

  346. And if I have you, everything else is gonna find its place, its time, its purpose, right?

  347. You know, its meaning.

  348. That's so good.

  349. That's so rich.

  350. What a great reminder.

  351. Um, what about like encouragement to someone that maybe started fasting and then like failed?

  352. You know?

  353. Um, do you just get back up and start again?

  354. Do you just call it quits?

  355. And you know, like uh after you spoke, it might have been January.

  356. Was that when you preached on the three-day like the transformation?

  357. So I had challenged myself in the next one, I was gonna at least fast that many days.

  358. And then I got sick, like sick sick, not like from fasting, just like the flu or whatever.

  359. And I was like, well, now, you know, why did I do this for?

  360. What was all the pain and suffering for?

  361. And felt like I had just wasted it.

  362. Yeah.

  363. Um, so what's your encouragement in a situation like that?

  364. Maybe somebody tries and life happens, or they just in our flesh, we just can't do it.

  365. All per all pursuit of God is positive.

  366. That's all pursuit of God.

  367. People, you think uh about even in struggling with sin issues, people are like, oh, I fail, and now none of this matters.

  368. Right.

  369. Like, no, every day you walked with the Lord matters.

  370. Every moment that you saw uh his word and his ways matter.

  371. And uh it's really funny because if you if you fail in the middle of 21 days of prayer with food, um, you're gonna have to start all over again.

  372. You're gonna be hungry again.

  373. Right, you're gonna have to pursue him again.

  374. You go through those hard days all over again.

  375. But the reality is you haven't failed.

  376. Right.

  377. Um, because you you can keep going right and you can keep pursuing him.

  378. And so I would encourage anybody.

  379. Um, if you if you feel like you failed, you've only failed if you haven't sought God.

  380. If you did all 21 days perfect, but you didn't experience God, that's the real failure.

  381. Right.

  382. And so if you have a desire to still experience God, keep going, get back up, uh, keep keep seeking him and pursuing him.

  383. And there is no failure apart from not getting the the benefit of finding him in the midst of it.

  384. The only failure is uh not to actually seek him and find him.

  385. Right.

  386. So in whatever fast you're doing, just keep seeking him.

  387. If you get sick, that's okay.

  388. What if what if he's putting you in the bed at home?

  389. And uh I I've known people that told me I was trying to I was trying to make perfect attendance at 21 days, but then I got sick.

  390. Right.

  391. That's happened to me in the middle of the 21 days of prayer.

  392. And uh one of my favorite 21 days of prayer is I got the flu and I didn't come in.

  393. Y'all don't come in.

  394. We don't we don't want to all get sick.

  395. Don't don't come in with the flu.

  396. We'll ruin this for all of us.

  397. Stay home.

  398. I stayed in bed by myself without the kids, uh, and Claire was taking care of the kids, she didn't want to get sick.

  399. And those days were the sweetest with the Lord.

  400. Right.

  401. And I realized, oh, he's answering my prayer.

  402. I was focused on perfect attendance at 21 days.

  403. Right.

  404. He was focused on me experiencing him.

  405. Yes.

  406. And so you can find him in the midst of what other people would say is failure or uh, you know, a setback or whatever.

  407. That's a good word, not just for fasting either, just for daily life.

  408. Yeah, you know, that's great.

  409. Um, as a church, we've been praying for more.

  410. Yes, more for our church, more for our people.

  411. And part of that has been a monthly fast, which is new in 2026.

  412. Yeah um, not for a whole month, but just the first Monday of every month.

  413. We've been encouraging our folks to maybe do a one-day fast.

  414. Um, what if, you know, we're in by the time this airs, late July, you may listen to it in August or later.

  415. We're halfway through the year.

  416. Is it too late to jump in?

  417. No, like do one day a month, challenge yourself.

  418. Yeah, I all of our spiritual lives is built on rhythms.

  419. And you need daily rhythms with God, you need um uh weekly time in the house of God.

  420. God established that in the Old Testament.

  421. Right.

  422. You need Sabbath rest.

  423. Uh that's hard when you're when your Sabbath day is working, like for ministry and pastors and staff, that's tough.

  424. But you need Sabbath rest.

  425. Um, and I would say just like every other spiritual rhythm calendared in your life, you need patterns of fasting.

  426. And so there's probably what that looks like yearly, right, what that looks like weekly.

  427. I'm not telling you what to do or how to do it, but um I really believe there is a continual pattern.

  428. This is what it looks like over the month, this is what it looks like over the week.

  429. Um, we just got back um recently from student camp.

  430. And on the way home, all I can think is adults need that.

  431. Oh wow.

  432. And that's why we built uh built out time in the year for spiritual renewal through 21 days of prayer.

  433. If you've never gone on that journey, this is it's the revival you need.

  434. Yes, it's the fuel for your soul.

  435. And uh it's become what our church craves season to season.

  436. And that, you know, you grow up every every summer, it's like, oh, go get revived, go get built up in the Lord, go get inspired, yeah, um, get back on track.

  437. And then we get old and we miss those spiritual rhythms.

  438. So I think fasting in 21 days is almost a camp-like revival for the house of God.

  439. Yes.

  440. How do you prepare for that?

  441. Like practically, are you eating more before you fast, or are you just doing life like normal?

  442. And then you just rip the band-aid off and jump right in.

  443. Yeah, with with um uh with food, I just do life pretty much like normal.

  444. Um with other things, it takes more preparation.

  445. Um so you know, depending on what you want to do, getting rid of uh apps on your phone, social media, um, building out time in your schedule.

  446. If you fast from everything but you don't have time with God, right, what have you done?

  447. If you're gonna give up food, then your time in the morning at breakfast should be spent with God, and your time at lunch should be spent with God, and your time at dinner should be spent with God.

  448. If you're gonna give it up, replace it with the things of Him.

  449. So my encouragement is like if you're gonna prep, prep the rhythms of your life.

  450. Choose a book of the Bible to go through, choose uh a devotional to study, uh, choose a group of friends to meet and talk, you know, to go on the journey with.

  451. Um so it's more like curating the rhythms of your life than it is necessarily like prepping your body or preparing your body.

  452. Um God's given us wisdom.

  453. And if you're if you're physically sick or you have medications that you take, uh even if you are as healthy as they come, there is wisdom in not breaking a fast with a steak because your body can't handle that or you can't digest.

  454. You gotta come back on, you know, uh soups and uh mashed potatoes.

  455. And you know, so there's practical wisdom, but as far as prepping to go into it, yeah, there's not a ton of prepping going into it.

  456. What about just like family time, even?

  457. You know, like in our house, dinner time is an important part of the day.

  458. Do you feel like you're missing out on something?

  459. How do you teach and disciple young kids in that?

  460. Like this is what's going on with in dad's life right now.

  461. Yeah, our our uh our kids don't fast while we fast, which makes you hungry, or you're prepping them food.

  462. Right.

  463. And that's good.

  464. You need to feel the hunger and the pain, the desire.

  465. Um, but it's what I just said having spiritual conversations, have intentional conversations, use the meal time to experience God.

  466. Yeah.

  467. And I love the questions we get about fasting, uh, especially from kids, from teenagers.

  468. And when they see their parents, their guardians pursuing God in that way, uh, it gives them a hunger for the things of God.

  469. I remember watching my my parents fast growing up and thinking, I'm gonna do that one day.

  470. Wow.

  471. Um, so yeah, I think that's a great way to teach them and for them to experience it.

  472. Yeah.

  473. When we talk about it in our house, you know, like what this is mom, what mom's fasting, this is what dad's fasting.

  474. Usually the kids are like, I'm gonna fast from broccoli or like bananas.

  475. No, it doesn't work like that.

  476. But it does make for great conversation, great spiritual conversations and teaching moments in your home.

  477. And you can teach a kid that you give up what means the most and what you love the most.

  478. That's what you give up.

  479. Yeah.

  480. Uh, in order to pursue God.

  481. And that is funny because you do hear that sometimes.

  482. It's like, oh, I'm giving up.

  483. It's like, is that even hard?

  484. Right?

  485. You don't love Broccoli like that.

  486. Don't tell me that.

  487. I love Brock.

  488. Right.

  489. I know.

  490. This has been so good.

  491. I'm so excited for 21 Days of Prayer.
