  1. good morning Collective

  2. church I am so excited to be here today

  3. and to talk about this if you don't know

  4. anything about me this is my favorite

  5. topic relationships and human

  6. connection and I am so so glad to be

  7. here I do feel

  8. some it feels like nervousness today and

  9. not because of my I'm nervous about the

  10. public speaking aspect it's this message

  11. is so

  12. important aside from following in the

  13. Lord and giving your life to him this

  14. marriage and our relationships with

  15. other humans is the biggest determining

  16. factor of the path that our W our life

  17. walks and there are ways to do it well

  18. and there are ways that can make it very

  19. painful um listening to this opening

  20. song talking about how we serve The God

  21. Who raises the dead that applies to our

  22. relationships because if you're in a

  23. dead relationship sh right now and you

  24. know the king who when he shows up he

  25. raises things from the dead I hope that

  26. speaks hope to you today everything I

  27. have to say I want it to be an

  28. encouragement none of this is to condemn

  29. you for anything you're experiencing

  30. right now because I believe that if

  31. you're walking in pain even if you're

  32. the one causing it there is a reason

  33. you're walking in that pain and the good

  34. news is we know the guy who makes all

  35. things new okay you might have heard

  36. marriage talked about 100 times if

  37. you've grown up in the church so my hope

  38. today is that I can give you a little

  39. different perspective because my

  40. background is a little bit different so

  41. I want to come at this from a different

  42. angle a few years ago I went and did a

  43. little bit of a job change and started

  44. getting trained in spanna therapy so I

  45. work with people in a therapeutic

  46. setting um addressing the part of our

  47. brain it's called our lyic system it's

  48. the deep deep layers of our brain that

  49. operate most by far of what we do some

  50. people refer to this as the subconscious

  51. part of your brain its job is to keep

  52. you safe and to remember everything

  53. you've ever been through and try to warn

  54. you from any of those things ever

  55. happening again and it does a very

  56. thorough job at it but sometimes it gets

  57. us stuck so I work in that capacity I uh

  58. in that have studied the science of

  59. connecting the science of how we show up

  60. in life um a few years ago I started a

  61. Tik Tok Channel strictly talking about

  62. healthy human connection and emotional

  63. intelligence and that was a few years

  64. ago so in order to get more and more

  65. content for that I had to read more and

  66. more books and I have kind of taken my

  67. my nerdiness in this subject and gone

  68. deep with it and brought it into what I

  69. talk

  70. about um and then a year ago I started a

  71. podcast specifically talking about this

  72. stuff so Neuroscience subconscious

  73. emotional intelligence that's what we're

  74. bringing to the topic of marriage today

  75. I recognize for as many faces that are

  76. in this room there's that many different

  77. kind of scenarios we have single people

  78. we have married people we have happily

  79. married people we have people stuck in

  80. painful marriages we have divorced

  81. people people on multip there maybe

  82. second marriage third marriage and I

  83. just want you to know I wish I could

  84. address all of those it's a short amount

  85. of time so I know the Holy Spirit has

  86. something for you today no matter what

  87. your story and background

  88. is all right I have have been married

  89. for 15 years to my husband Mason here

  90. and you know thank you you know the love

  91. story when we so we met in uh College

  92. thanks to my mom she's very proud of

  93. that um so we met in college and it was

  94. the love story of all love stories I

  95. thought nobody had ever been in love

  96. like my husband and I before like we had

  97. just unlock something that no one else

  98. had ever experienced I would spend hours

  99. reading my nursing uh studying for

  100. nursing tests in the stinky practice

  101. rooms of his music performance degree

  102. College rooms and I just we were in love

  103. we would stay up all night talking about

  104. our futures and our dreams and finding

  105. more out about each other and it was

  106. just a dream and then that dream led us

  107. to get married we moved to Colorado and

  108. it was just like man how did we get so

  109. lucky but then we had to be like real

  110. live adults we had to get jobs we had to

  111. pay bills um we started having kids

  112. which is a lifelong dream of ours some

  113. the best part of our life but our apathy

  114. towards each other crept in because our

  115. intentionality towards all the other

  116. stuff took

  117. over and it happened slowly over time

  118. our late nights of discovering each

  119. other and talking about what makes us

  120. excited and what hurts our feelings and

  121. what how to connect better turned into a

  122. Netflix episode in an early bedtime

  123. because the baby's going to be up in 2

  124. hours right and you're like you it's

  125. fine it's just for a season well that

  126. season was years and it was here you do

  127. dinner I'll do the diapers you do bath

  128. time I'll clean up the kitchen what time

  129. do we have to be at your mom's don't

  130. forget to bring this to the school

  131. tomorrow um you know let's spend

  132. Saturday we got to get the house cleaned

  133. we haven't cleaned this it we became

  134. task masters of our own lives and our

  135. own house and although he worked from

  136. home and we spoke all day every day we

  137. never said anything to each

  138. other for a long time nothing of

  139. substance at least not that inner stuff

  140. the stuff of like here's who I am how

  141. I'm doing and the reality was years had

  142. gone by I was not the same person as I

  143. was in college I had evolved to a mom I

  144. am a new person he was a new person but

  145. we didn't take the time to get to meet

  146. that new

  147. person so all of a sudden we found

  148. ourselves in a place that felt very

  149. lonely very

  150. scary um and not really knowing how to

  151. get out of it those conversations that

  152. you we used to have when we were in

  153. college felt very awkward and like we

  154. had forgotten how to do

  155. them and it was almost like we were

  156. trying to be at least for me trying to

  157. be go back to what we had in college

  158. what I didn't realize is we had to do

  159. something new we had to create a new

  160. relationship because we were new people

  161. now so we were ready to do that

  162. thankfully he was in it with me both of

  163. us were ready to scrap the marriage that

  164. we were currently in and build something

  165. new together that looked like going to

  166. counseling that looked like reading a

  167. lot of books that looked like practicing

  168. connecting with each other even though

  169. it felt cheesy and awkward and like uh

  170. and I just want to go to bed right it

  171. was work and I remember Mason talking to

  172. one of his friends about this who was

  173. also struggling in his marriage at the

  174. time with loneliness and disconnection

  175. and the guy said nah marriage isn't work

  176. it should just come naturally you

  177. shouldn't have to work at it if you have

  178. to work at it you must be married to the

  179. wrong

  180. person and he said look at us we're

  181. buddies we're friends we don't have to

  182. work on our friendship and Mason said I

  183. talk to you twice a

  184. week I guarantee you that if we were

  185. living in the same same house doing all

  186. of life every layer of it together we

  187. would have some stuff to work through

  188. because relationships take effort but

  189. the effort is so so worth

  190. it today I want to tell you what a Godly

  191. marriage is in case you have never seen

  192. one maybe you grew up and it was not a

  193. Godly marriage that was in your home and

  194. I want to paint that picture for you

  195. because I want you to hear the Holy

  196. Spirit say this is what I have for you

  197. this was my original design for marriage

  198. and then I want to talk about some of

  199. the biggest landmines that take those

  200. things over and kind of kill that

  201. original design for marriage that God

  202. has for

  203. us all right so perfect world

  204. scenario this is uh talking to the men

  205. the Bible does have some stuff to say

  206. about how men show up in a specifically

  207. marriage setting and Ephesians

    Ephesians 5:23

  208. 5:23 says men are called to love their

  209. bride like Christ loves the

  210. church that is a high

  211. calling like someday men the words you

  212. speak the tone of voice you use the eye

  213. contact the body language the time you

  214. give to your wife you're going to stand

  215. before your Creator and he's going to

  216. ask you how did you Steward this

  217. relationship that I gave you and the

  218. standard you're going to be held to is

  219. Christ it is a high high

  220. calling and it says that we are called

  221. To Love you're called the love like

  222. Christ well Christ laid down his life

  223. for his church he put his everything

  224. aside and laid his life down for our

  225. benefit so that we would Thrive so that

  226. we would have freedom so that we would

  227. have identity and

  228. Authority

  229. okay the Bible also says that you are

  230. the head of the home and the head of the

  231. relationship this is not talking about

  232. I'm the boss you got to do what I say

  233. when I say it because I'm the leader

  234. that has a different term that's called

  235. toxic masculinity in this day and age

  236. this kind of leadership is different

  237. than the world portrays if the world

  238. says leadership is flex make your voice

  239. loud be decisive and strong and hard but

  240. the Bible says this the kingdom we're in

  241. is an upside down kingdom it works the

  242. very opposite of how the world works

  243. and it says that when Christ

  244. came he was our

  245. servant the Bible actually says in

  246. Matthew

  247. 20 it says whoever will be great among

  248. you shall be your

  249. servant so if you're the husband in this

  250. home and you are laying your life down

  251. so that your wife can flourish so that

  252. you're creating space for her to have

  253. identity and authority and you are um um

  254. serving her with your time and your

  255. energy and your

  256. conversation you are like the the

  257. fertilizer that helps her

  258. grow and then you do the same thing for

  259. your kids you become this platform this

  260. foundation for your family on which

  261. everybody

  262. stands and it's a beautiful scenario and

  263. families flourish like this men you are

  264. strong you are resilient and you are

  265. natural leaders because God designed you

  266. that way when your leadership is in

  267. under this umbrella of

  268. servanthood it changes your family it

  269. changes our city it changes our nation

  270. imagine if our whole nation was filled

  271. with men who are looking to God

  272. accountable to him and then coming in

  273. service with all that strength and

  274. Leadership to their

  275. family the other thing about this men is

  276. that means you're the leader you go

  277. first so if your marriage is

  278. struggling if you're wife is feeling

  279. disconnected sad

  280. lonely if you're feeling stuck this

  281. isn't

  282. working and you're at a standstill wife

  283. doesn't want to say sorry you don't want

  284. to say sorry wife doesn't want to do

  285. anything different you don't want you

  286. got to go first because you're the

  287. leader Christ is looking to you to go

  288. first be brave show your family what it

  289. means to humble

  290. yourself and to walk out kindness and

  291. love even when it feels like you're

  292. putting your own desires and pride to

  293. the side

  294. okay women we have our own mandate in

  295. the Bible uh Ephesians 5 says women

  296. submit to your husbands and in Genesis

  297. it says that we were created to be his

  298. helpmate now this is his helpmate not

  299. the shove him to the side and do it for

  300. him not the ne him until he does it not

  301. to criticize him until he gets it right

  302. we are to be his helper like the person

  303. who like he was fertilizer us to grow

  304. and be the best version of ourselves we

  305. come alongside him and say hey what do

  306. you need we remind him of his identity

  307. we remind him of his authority in Christ

  308. who he is we're praying for him we're

  309. encouraging him we're reminding him who

  310. he is when he can't even remember

  311. himself like you're becoming his person

  312. his safe place so that when he goes out

  313. and does whatever it is that he's doing

  314. he knows that when he comes home he's

  315. got you and the words that you speak

  316. with your mouth are so so

  317. important there's a quote that I heard

  318. that has always stuck with me and it

  319. says every man has two men inside of him

  320. a fool and a king and the one that you

  321. speak to is the one that will

  322. emerge because women have this innate

  323. ability to create life we create life

  324. with our bodies we create life with our

  325. words and when you call out that kind of

  326. identity in the man that God has given

  327. you that that King

  328. emerges it's like you have the power to

  329. tell him who he is that is a big big

  330. calling men are strong and they are um

  331. assertive but they need someone by their

  332. side reminding them of who they are when

  333. they don't remember it for

  334. themselves when you are out in public

  335. when you are at home in private use your

  336. words to show honor and respect respect

  337. to the man that God gave

  338. you okay so another quote for you

  339. here and I'm going to switch gears

  340. because this is one of my most important

  341. points I want to tell you guys this is a

  342. GameChanger life Cher and applies to

  343. every relationship you have not just

  344. marriage intimacy so closeness the

  345. ability to feel connected with someone

  346. like they're you're ride or die is it

  347. will inevitably bring conflict

  348. right but conflict does not always bring

  349. intimacy even though it's the biggest

  350. opportunity for human

  351. connection okay so

  352. conflict is your because you're a human

  353. number one way to connect with somebody

  354. because it involves emotions and like it

  355. or not it'd be easier if it wasn't this

  356. way but emotions are the number one way

  357. in which humans connect you have to to

  358. have some sort of an emotional something

  359. going on I'm not talking about emotional

  360. Outburst I'm not talking about screaming

  361. and crying I'm talking about heart

  362. connection you have to have that to be

  363. able to connect with someone okay so I'm

  364. going to tell you why conflict is your

  365. best uh fertile ground for connection

  366. but first I'm going to tell you about

  367. the Goins okay Doctor John gotman and

  368. his wife I've got a book of theirs here

  369. that I'm going to hand out at the end of

  370. this they are like the kings and queens

  371. of relationships they've given their

  372. entire lives to studying the science of

  373. human connection if any of this

  374. intrigues you get on their website

  375. you'll get lost for hours it's such good

  376. stuff and it's all research based so

  377. they did this study that they're famous

  378. for they took thousands of couples and

  379. they watched them over two decades and

  380. what they were watching for is how they

  381. handled conflict okay it's inevitable

  382. right it's going to come up

  383. at the end of this study they were able

  384. to predict within

  385. 93.6%

  386. accuracy which couples were going to end

  387. up separating and which couples were

  388. going to stay married based off of this

  389. tell there's a tell and Dr John gotman

  390. says if this is present if these are

  391. present in your

  392. relationship is not looking you're not

  393. on a good

  394. trajectory okay uh and what he was

  395. looking for is a series of connecting

  396. behaviors or disconnecting behaviors in

  397. Conflict okay so when you are in

  398. Conflict someone's feeling triggered

  399. There's an opportunity for emotion at

  400. the surface you can have an opportunity

  401. to either connect or

  402. disconnect with your spouse with your

  403. partner at the time okay the couples who

  404. showed five connecting behaviors for

  405. every one disconnected Behavior he put

  406. them in the category of super connectors

  407. they were the people that 20 years from

  408. now they're going to be happily married

  409. with their ride or die weathered the

  410. storm got through all life through at

  411. them and they happy they did it because

  412. they they showed these this kind of

  413. honor and respect for each other even

  414. when tension was high okay the couples

  415. who showed far more disconnecting

  416. behaviors they were the ones that he

  417. could predict within 93% accuracy that

  418. that relationship was not going to make

  419. it okay and of these and I'm gonna I'm

  420. move on to another slide so if you'd

  421. like take go ahead and take a picture of

  422. this um if that's helpful for you but of

  423. those disconnecting behaviors he

  424. identified four that were the most

  425. deadly to relationships and so he

  426. decided to give them the most dramatic

  427. name possible in my opinion he called

  428. them the four henchmen of the Apocalypse

  429. the apocalypse meaning the end

  430. okay these were

  431. criticism stating your complaint about a

  432. scenario as a defect in your partner's

  433. personality this would look like you

  434. always talk about yourself you're so

  435. selfish defect in your

  436. personality um anything critical crit

  437. criticizing your behavior criticizing

  438. your intent criticizing you as a person

  439. criticizing your laziness it's

  440. it's a weed that will grow rampant if

  441. let loose the next one is contempt and

  442. he says this one is the most dangerous

  443. of all of them and it's basically just

  444. approaching your significant other your

  445. spouse as if you are better than them

  446. it's this attitude of I cannot believe

  447. you would do that what is wrong with you

  448. you are such an idiot that name calling

  449. that I am up here and you are down here

  450. okay defensiveness is the next one

  451. defensiveness in conflict is when

  452. something in you perceives that someone

  453. is trying to attack you and your

  454. instinct is to protect yourself so I'm

  455. going to take everything you say and I'm

  456. going to shove it right back at you I'm

  457. G to fight

  458. back I am going to Def excuse me deflect

  459. everything that is said to me I can't

  460. hear any kind of constructive feedback

  461. because I am protecting myself right now

  462. and then the last one

  463. stonewalling I was the queen of

  464. stonewalling I just shut everything down

  465. oh we're in a conflict no problem

  466. because this has no effect on me you

  467. can't talk to me I have nothing to say

  468. about this I'm fine I am great nothing

  469. ever hurts my feelings and I never get

  470. mad about anything so leave me alone

  471. right I hope that sounds familiar to

  472. anyone else other than just me I had to

  473. learn how to undo that training and that

  474. was very very difficult

  475. so I want you to look at this and not be

  476. discouraged I told you I'm not telling

  477. you anything today because I want you to

  478. feel guilty I want you to be encouraged

  479. there's a guy out there that spent his

  480. entire life dedicating his whole career

  481. to figuring out the four deadliest

  482. things for relationships so that we

  483. don't have to all we have to do is

  484. believe him all we have to do is take

  485. all of our energy arm in-arm with our

  486. spouse and say no matter what we are

  487. getting rid of these four things zero

  488. tolerance and when we mess up which we

  489. will cuz we're learning we're learning

  490. how to do marriage differently we are

  491. committed to just apologizing every

  492. single time oh I'm sorry I'm doing the

  493. stonewalling thing again okay give me 20

  494. minutes I need to gather my thoughts I

  495. need to cool down come back in 20

  496. minutes and let's talk about this right

  497. we're learning new skills I want you to

  498. be encouraged that somebody identified

  499. these and it's okay if they're in your

  500. relationship now because you know the

  501. God who teaches you how to do new things

  502. you know The God Who raises things from

  503. the dead and creates newness in us okay

  504. all right so let's get to why is

  505. conflict fertile ground because most of

  506. us if I was going to pull you you'd

  507. probably say uh no it's the exact

  508. opposite conflict is terrible it's

  509. lonely and frustrating I avoid it at all

  510. costs and I hate it and I get it I think

  511. the rest of the world would agree with

  512. you but what John gotman says in his

  513. book here fight right how successful

  514. couple turn conflict into

  515. connection okay so imagine this I'm

  516. going to I want you to totally change

  517. how you see conflict that's my goal okay

  518. on a random Tuesday morning when you're

  519. at home with your spouse and everybody's

  520. just getting ready for work or getting

  521. the kids out the door to school and

  522. you're in task mode there's no

  523. deep potential for connection right

  524. there because we're just doing life all

  525. the things all the emotions they're kind

  526. of tucked down deep

  527. somewhere and you can be kind and it's

  528. but it's not the fertile ground for deep

  529. connection but let's say we're in

  530. Conflict I'm feeling scared I'm feeling

  531. frustrated I'm feeling nervous anything

  532. and my emotions come to the

  533. surface which we don't always get to

  534. choose when that happens right sometimes

  535. they just come up to the

  536. surface here is an

  537. opportunity for my spouse now I could

  538. bring this fear this frustration to my

  539. spouse and he could notice it as an

  540. opportunity to connect and he could just

  541. shower me with all those connecting

  542. behaviors that was on that

  543. list imagine if I came to my spouse and

  544. I

  545. said I'm feeling just so nervous about

  546. this thing um I'm I can't settle down

  547. it's making me doubt everything and I

  548. share and I pour my heart out I get my

  549. my I get up the nerve to share something

  550. very vulnerable with him and imagine if

  551. he met me with wow I had no idea you

  552. were feeling that way thank you for

  553. telling me because I just I had no idea

  554. imagine if he like came and sat down

  555. next to me and he put his phone away and

  556. just like listened and didn't

  557. interrupt and then I explained more and

  558. he's like

  559. so are you saying this he's actively

  560. listening there's this pressure release

  561. valve in me when Mason does that for me

  562. that I'm

  563. like okay I got that off my chest and

  564. somebody like sat in the yuck with it

  565. with me and I felt safe in that

  566. moment because on top of that safety you

  567. do that enough times you start to build

  568. trust in your marriage

  569. again and then you do that enough times

  570. you start to build up that friendship

  571. side of marriage again because what

  572. Mason and I lost in those early years

  573. was our friend

  574. friendship we were we were just not

  575. connecting with each other in a way that

  576. was meaningful in a way that was strong

  577. enough to to tie us together now imagine

  578. if I got up the guts to say something

  579. super vulnerable to my spouse and I was

  580. met with oh not again you do this like

  581. once a month we have to have this

  582. conversation or he rolls his eyes or he

  583. keeps scrolling on his phone never even

  584. acknowledges that I'm

  585. talking that does the very opposite it

  586. creates a Feeling of not feeling safe

  587. and withdraw and like okay I will learn

  588. not to bring my self my inner World

  589. anything real I'll just I'm learning not

  590. to bring that to

  591. you when you paint it like that you can

  592. see why these two columns are so

  593. important in the study that the gotms

  594. did and why they are one of the biggest

  595. determining factors if a marriages last

  596. or

  597. not and I will tell you learning to do

  598. marriage with connecting behaviors

  599. honoring your spouse being there for

  600. them understanding laying yourself down

  601. so you can hear their pain you can

  602. respond to it compassionately all of

  603. this is hard work but it will become

  604. more natural for you the more you do it

  605. and if you had to look at these two

  606. columns again and if you had to guess

  607. which one do you think lines up with the

  608. voice of the Lord and which one do you

  609. think lines up with the voice of the

  610. enemy God gave us free will we get to be

  611. do marriage however ever we want to we

  612. get to show up selfishly or selflessly

  613. we get to be ruled by our anger or we

  614. get to learn Grace and

  615. compassion God will not force you to be

  616. this kind of a

  617. spouse but I'm telling you what it is

  618. also for your own benefit that you learn

  619. to become that kind of a spouse because

  620. in marriage God has a deep meaningful

  621. friendship and connection for you and

  622. you're going to miss it you're going to

  623. miss it if you're stuck

  624. the disconnecting trying to protect

  625. myself trying to make myself more

  626. powerful than you trying to make sure

  627. you don't hurt me it feels safer to be

  628. in that column but it's a lie it's

  629. isolating and it's lonely and it will

  630. only end in more pain God's way is go

  631. straight through it and yes I understand

  632. that this often takes both the husband

  633. and the wife who are willing to obey

  634. Christ in their

  635. marriage when one person is on board and

  636. the other person is not interested in

  637. obeying Christ in their marriage this

  638. Dynamic gets

  639. tricky but I want like I said to paint

  640. you the ideal so that you can see what

  641. God is capable of bringing into a

  642. marriage when both people submit to him

  643. give their lives to him and do marriage

  644. his

  645. way

  646. okay when we talk about successful

  647. conflict I'm going to touch on this just

  648. briefly 1 Corinthians 16:14 says let all

    1 Corinthians 16:14

  649. you do be done in love love that could

  650. be the end of my sermon right there if

  651. you applied that verse to everything you

  652. do every conflict you have with your SP

  653. spouse the way you greet them in the

  654. morning the way you come home after work

  655. the words you speak about them when

  656. they're not around if you just applied

  657. that verse that's it 90% of marriage

  658. issues would probably clear up right but

  659. it's the like nitty-gritty the how how

  660. do we do everything in love that's the

  661. part that takes some learning and some

  662. education so number one

  663. if you attempt if you feel a conflict

  664. coming like you can feel the storm

  665. brewing and you gear up to win I'm going

  666. to win this one I'm going to finally

  667. tell them how I feel I am going to make

  668. sure they know that I'm not going to

  669. stand for this anymore I'm going to win

  670. you've already

  671. lost because you're approaching the

  672. entire you're missing the whole thing of

  673. conflict being a point of connection

  674. okay instead I want you to seek to

  675. understand okay the conflict is brewing

  676. the emotions are up at the

  677. surface I am G to try to understand why

  678. you're so upset where are you coming

  679. from because I'm not understanding could

  680. you say that in a different way what I'm

  681. hearing you say is this is that right oh

  682. wow I had no idea John gotman says that

  683. when he talks to his wife in these

  684. scenarios he says I have a legal pad

  685. that I get out and I and I don't

  686. interrupt and I learn about her I learn

  687. learn that the thing that I was doing

  688. that I thought was blessing her is

  689. actually driving her insane and she

  690. hates it and if I would have never

  691. listened to her I would have never

  692. learned that about her he takes time to

  693. write his notes on legal

  694. paper second one is just honor God and

  695. how you speak the words that come out of

  696. your mouth are powerful if I'm the one

  697. expressing a grievance to my spouse I am

  698. responsible for saying it kindly

  699. respectfully in a way that focuses on my

  700. experience and not blames

  701. you I feel lonely when this happens I

  702. feel disrespected when this happens

  703. instead of you always

  704. right submit your tongue to the Lord

  705. take a breather before you get your

  706. heart in a good spot before you bring a

  707. grievance to your spouse be respectful

  708. you'll be held account of it accountable

  709. to it when you stand before the Lord

  710. someday when someone brings a grievance

  711. to you watch your tongue

  712. Get Your Heart Right with the Lord check

  713. in with Jesus before you respond you're

  714. going to be held accountable for your

  715. response to someone when they bring a

  716. grievance to you and then finally be

  717. careful not to let your emotions dictate

  718. your actions okay if you have spent any

  719. time around a toddler you know they have

  720. an emotion they feel an emotion it

  721. dictates their actions right there in

  722. the middle of the grocery store right

  723. they don't have a filter they don't have

  724. a delay

  725. they don't have an ability to pause and

  726. choose something different and that's

  727. developmentally appropriate but part of

  728. growing up and getting out of that

  729. childhood behavior is learning to have

  730. an emotion recognize it oh I'm feeling

  731. heated right now my heart is pounding my

  732. fists are sweaty and clenched I am

  733. feeling some

  734. feelings but

  735. pausing creating space and then choosing

  736. choosing how to respond to this person I

  737. may feel like stonewalling cuz I am mad

  738. and I don't want to talk about it and I

  739. want to shut you out because I want to

  740. punish you for how you've treated me and

  741. I want my silence to feel awkward to you

  742. but I am

  743. choosing to give myself a 10-minute

  744. breather and to come back and talk about

  745. this I might feel like everything you're

  746. saying is ridiculous and it's a waste of

  747. time and I there's no point in me

  748. listening to it but I'm going to choose

  749. because I am growing up I am an adult

  750. who is learning to handle my emotions

  751. better I'm going to choose to try harder

  752. to understand what it is that you're

  753. saying and where some of this anger is

  754. coming from and what it is you're truly

  755. trying to get across to

  756. me now all of this is easier said than

  757. done

  758. right I just painted a lot of really

  759. perfect world scenarios for you sounds

  760. really great but then you get your own

  761. emotions stirred up and you open your

  762. mouth and those four henchmen come

  763. roaring out and you're like whoa I

  764. didn't even know I was going to do that

  765. or say that like the red lights come on

  766. right and you just get triggered and I

  767. want to tell you something about this

  768. this is more where we're talking about

  769. the Neuroscience side of this there is a

  770. reason that you do that and it's not

  771. because you're a horrible person you are

  772. not a horrible

  773. person you have this part of your brain

  774. that is wired to operate in a certain

  775. way and a lot of it comes from maybe how

  776. you were

  777. raised uh things that were spoken over

  778. you as a kid the dynamic of your being

  779. able to have any kind of emotions when

  780. you were a kid with your parents a pain

  781. that you experienced with a breakup in

  782. college your brain registers those as

  783. like red flag this thing emotions

  784. relationships dangerous so we just build

  785. all the walls up right we protect oursel

  786. we get defensive because we're trying to

  787. stay safe and the thing that maybe kept

  788. you safe as a kid is now keeping you

  789. stuck as an

  790. adult okay I'm going to give you um a

  791. small example of

  792. this Susa Q okay she had a dad who just

  793. wasn't around much and when he was he'd

  794. come home he'd sit in the couch and he'd

  795. watch TV for five six hours until the

  796. night was over need to go to bed wasn't

  797. really interested in her or what her

  798. what was going on with her life and

  799. eventually when she was 10 he just up

  800. and left all together

  801. okay now she's married got her own

  802. husband got her own kids her own life

  803. great life great marriage great husband

  804. but occasionally he comes home from work

  805. and he sits on the couch for 10 or 15

  806. minutes before dinner

  807. starts and every alarm in her nervous

  808. system starts going off she freaks out

  809. you don't even care about her family

  810. what do you look at you just sitting on

  811. the couch there well I'm slaving over

  812. dinner you don't even care how hard I've

  813. worked today and this is like a side of

  814. his wife he is not used to seeing but it

  815. happens every time and I guarantee you

  816. she doesn't know why it makes her so

  817. upset but something has registered in

  818. her this visual of a man sitting on a

  819. couch equals a man who does not care

  820. about me is emotionally checked out and

  821. one day is going to leave

  822. me now that's a very specific example

  823. but I promise you if you have any kind

  824. of story in your life like that that has

  825. been unresolved that is still seeping

  826. into our relationships today okay if you

  827. had temper tantrums as a kid and you

  828. were spanked for them sent to your room

  829. punished for having emotions you very

  830. likely learned I will just not have

  831. those emotions and it solves all the

  832. problems I don't get in trouble my

  833. parents don't reject me yell at me

  834. embarrass me send send me away so I

  835. won't be sad anymore I won't be scared I

  836. won't be upset and I'll lock it all down

  837. well now you're married and your wife is

  838. sitting there your husband's sitting

  839. there saying tell me all the feelings

  840. and you're

  841. like there's something deep in you

  842. saying I'm not doing that that unhealed

  843. stuff as much as I wish it wasn't true

  844. and as much as it's hard to believe it

  845. is affecting the way we show up in our

  846. relationships

  847. today but the good news is we know who

  848. the healer is is we know the guy who

  849. brings healing to our past

  850. okay um there's a video that I'm going

  851. to show you in a little

  852. bit and I don't anticipate that you guys

  853. are going to cry when you see it but I

  854. will be honest and tell you I

  855. did and it's a very scientific video so

  856. the the reason for Tears does not make

  857. any sense besides I am a nerd about this

  858. kind of stuff but it is powerful because

  859. what I'm going to show you is a video of

  860. two brain cells connecting for the first

  861. time it's essentially a video of someone

  862. learning something

  863. new it's essentially a video of God

  864. renewing our mind he created us to have

  865. something that the Science World calls

  866. neurogenesis the ability to make

  867. completely brand new brain cells and

  868. neuroplasticity which means even if your

  869. childhood was riddled with pain and

  870. distance and emotional disconnection and

  871. you've marked red flags on all of that

  872. God has given our bodies the innate

  873. ability to renew our

  874. mind yes and our mind is the place where

  875. all these messages are speaking to us

  876. all the things that you don't even know

  877. are in the background I am worthless no

  878. one's going to stick around for me

  879. connecting with humans isn't safe my

  880. feelings are not valid

  881. [Music]

  882. uh this person is

  883. dangerous all of those programs you have

  884. running in the depths of your

  885. brain will override your conscious part

  886. of your brain until there is healing

  887. brought into those

  888. places so we got to let the Healer in

  889. God is faithful to renew our minds but

  890. we got to show up to the counseling

  891. session with him right and this might

  892. actually mean you finally go to

  893. counseling for

  894. season it might mean that you get with a

  895. trusted Christian Mentor or friend and

  896. you're like hey I've got stuff to

  897. process I've never talked about what

  898. happened in my childhood I have never

  899. acknowledged that the way that I'm

  900. acting might be because I'm trying to

  901. protect myself and I have pain that I

  902. wish wasn't there but it's been three

  903. decades and it's still there and it's

  904. not going away anytime

  905. soon but I will also tell you this is

  906. why getting in your word is so

  907. important God doesn't say get in your

  908. word because he just wants more rules

  909. for you to follow he knows that the Deep

  910. parts of your brain that are still

  911. feeling like that little child dismissed

  912. and discouraged and shamed and punished

  913. when you were a kid for just having

  914. emotions or whatever it was he knows

  915. that when you get in your word and you

  916. read I am fearfully and wonderfully made

  917. I am worth not only fighting for not

  918. only sticking around for I'm worth dying

  919. for like the king of Heaven if it was

  920. just me on this planet he would have

  921. came and died just for

  922. me and you you read this stuff this

  923. truth this shame that's been keeping you

  924. down for so long and all of a sudden you

  925. read there's no condemnation in Christ

  926. like he got he gets rid of all of it I'm

  927. not condemned and you start to think a

  928. new thought and not just in the

  929. conscious layers of your brain the

  930. subconscious part of your brain starts

  931. to rewire itself

  932. it undoes the pain and the hurt from

  933. what was spoken and done over you before

  934. you begin to believe

  935. God which means you have to stop

  936. believing the other

  937. voices and it changes the depths of your

  938. brain in such a tangible way that I can

  939. show you a video of it because we serve

  940. a God who makes all things new and we

  941. are created in his likeness which means

  942. we can make all things new

  943. we can make our marriage new we can lay

  944. down our pride serve each other in the

  945. way that Christ serves us we can force

  946. our words to submit to Christ and not

  947. let anything come out of our mouth that

  948. is critical or full of contempt or

  949. defensiveness and when we do we

  950. apologize because we're doing life

  951. differently now we don't do marriage the

  952. same way as the world

  953. does so I'm going to have you guys watch

  954. this video here are two brain cells

  955. thinking a new

  956. thought a new pathway for this thought

  957. to be formed the brain needs a pathway

  958. in order for a thought to be

  959. thought imagine this as the thought of I

  960. am worth sticking around

  961. for I'm worth fighting

  962. for I am not held down by shame anymore

  963. and like how hard the Body Works to

  964. fight for us like those those things

  965. look like they have a mind of their own

  966. and they are working hard to find each

  967. other and to connect in this new thought

  968. and then the other cool thing is in this

  969. science part of creating new thoughts

  970. this thought I'm worth fighting for I

  971. don't have to carry shame anymore

  972. because Christ washed it away it's this

  973. flimsy little Connection in your brain

  974. and it's brand new but the more you

  975. think it meaning the more you open your

  976. word the more you meet with Jesus In

  977. Worship the more you let him speak over

  978. you and you think that thought over and

  979. over and over

  980. again that thought becomes literally

  981. thicker faster for that electrical

  982. impulse to travel across and your mind

  983. is literally in the process of being

  984. made

  985. new Romans 122 my favorite verse over

  986. the last few years be transformed by the

  987. r renewing of your mind and don't you

  988. love when science matches up with what

  989. God has been telling us for thousands of

  990. years the other cool thing is the more

  991. you think that thought and the faster

  992. and thicker that that thought process

  993. gets your brain is so efficient it will

  994. recognize that these other Pathways

  995. they're just taking up room now we don't

  996. use them that often the I'm worthless I

  997. I deserve bad things to happen to me I

  998. am shameful I deserve uh people to walk

  999. away we we don't use those thoughts

1000. anymore so the brain will start to

1001. shrivel them up and eventually they can

1002. disappear altogether and your most

1003. natural state is I am a child of God I

1004. deserve to be treated well the pain that

1005. I feel deserves to be heard I can say it

1006. and I deserve it to be met with

  1007. compassion I don't carry shame around

1008. anymore because I've been forgiven by

  1009. [Music]

1010. Christ so I just leave you at that this

1011. let Christ come in let him heal let him

1012. renew your mind your spouse is a gift

1013. from God when both of you are under the

1014. submission of Christ and willing to

1015. serve each other in this way God will

1016. use your spouse to not only bring you a

1017. friend a person to do life

1018. with but also to sanctify you to teach

1019. you things about him that you haven't

1020. learned yet because when marriage gets

1021. hard and it does sometimes you learn to

1022. dig deeper into Christ you learn to draw

1023. from his love instead of your own and

  1024. it's worth the

1025. work so I'm going to have Pastor Drew

1026. come up and just pray over us and then

1027. uh I'm not going to do it publicly but

1028. at the end I've got three marriage books

1029. up here that I read in my season of

1030. learning a lot of the stuff that I'd

1031. love to hand out so whoever wants to

1032. come up to me and grab those afterwards

  1033. be great
