  1. uh so today we've been going through a

  2. series called Relationships by Design

  3. and uh we I I I wanted to continue this

  4. on just a little bit longer uh because

  5. there's a couple things that I I believe

  6. that the Lord wants to speak into our

  7. relationships today and uh here at

  8. Collective and really it comes from uh

  9. the

  10. reality that when you look at

  11. marriage marriage is the the peak of the

  12. difficulty of

  13. relationships and the peak of the the

  14. enjoyment and fulfillment of

  15. relationship right the greatest strength

  16. in Heights in beautiful things is found

  17. in marriage and the greatest

  18. difficulties is found in marriage for

  19. most people you will say who has hurt

  20. you the most

  21. the most it's probably for most people

  22. it's probably a

  23. spouse because we give the deepest

  24. access who has fulfilled you the

  25. most also probably

  26. spouse because there's this when when

  27. when someone else comes up and speaks uh

  28. speaks against me or says something

  29. about me that uh they're like hey yeah

  30. that you like I don't know you're just

  31. not really my my cup of tea you're kind

  32. of too much for me whatever like I'll be

  33. like okay cool do your thing bro if my

  34. wife was to say that to me oh I'd be

  35. destroyed right right like it's just

  36. it's totally radically different but

  37. here's the problem marriage especially

  38. in America is

  39. failing now if you look at the stats

  40. here's the good

  41. news divorce rates are

  42. dropping they actually have been

  43. dropping but the marriage rates are

  44. plummeting see we're choosing instead of

  45. marriage we're not getting divorces

  46. because we're never getting

  47. married and so it's impossible to track

  48. this the the the what about these

  49. long-term fully committed relationships

  50. that end up not working out well here's

  51. the problem because that is disappearing

  52. so also we see commitment is

  53. disappearing and it gives us this this

  54. perspective of marriage that then now we

  55. get all these different you talk about

  56. marriage and for some people it's a good

  57. thing for some people it's a bad thing

  58. for some it is it's whether it's wanted

  59. whether it's not wanted whether it's

  60. seen as totally unnecessary or whether

  61. it's seen as a tra a atic

  62. experience either either because of you

  63. seeing your parents marriage or because

  64. of a marriage that you've been

  65. through we have totally different

  66. perspectives on this and this is why

  67. we're asking these questions and I've

  68. got a lot of questions I'm going to be

  69. hitting on but I want to encourage you

  70. guys we got another week you can still

  71. text in questions for uh about

  72. relationships if it didn't get hit on

  73. last week we did our panel and how did

  74. our panel members do

  75. wasn't that

  76. incredible man it was just like bomb

  77. after bomb after bomb was being dropped

  78. it was like whoa you can build so much

  79. off of these little pieces of wisdom and

  80. if we sit on that it'll transform us uh

  81. but what I want to do is I want to make

  82. sure that at Collective our

  83. relationships are designed after God and

  84. uh so I've got I've got a couple more

  85. books that I want to hand out uh and

  86. both are by a gentleman named Gary

  87. Thomas and one is called the sacred

  88. search it's all about dating it's all

  89. about and here's the idea it says what

  90. if it's not about who you marry what if

  91. it's not about finding the one the one

  92. out of the 8.1 billion people out there

  93. that I am compatible with what if it's

  94. not about who you marry but

  95. why and then

  96. then sacred marriage this is once you've

  97. stepped into marriage it says what have

  98. God designed marriage to make us holy

  99. even more than to make us happy and I

  100. want to give these books away uh if

  101. you're a reader or if you want to dive

  102. into this who wants who wants come on

  103. come on over here we go I got you sacred

  104. search right here and then sacred

  105. marriage who wants sacred

  106. marriage right here there you go take

  107. it got you there you go come on can we

  108. give a hand for those who are investing

  109. in Mar marage and relationships and

  110. doing it the right way so uh I'm going

  111. to jump right in we have today's today's

  112. message is called marriage agreements

  113. because in marriage in any

  114. relationship we we come with these

  115. expectations and these agreements that

  116. we've made whether we know it or not

  117. that's the problem often times in in

  118. marriage and in relationships we carry

  119. expectations that we've never actually

  120. communicated and once I get to

  121. communicating them I'm like actually I'm

  122. just now realizing I held that

  123. expectation as I'm saying it like yes

  124. that is something that I thought was

  125. going to be reciprocal here I thought

  126. when I went to work that you knew that

  127. it meant I loved

  128. you and when I come home and I'm like

  129. hey I've been loving you all day long

  130. babe right like I need a break now any

  131. guys relate to this right like hey I've

  132. been I've been showing you I've been

  133. working so hard I've been trying to

  134. bring in and and the and the bride is

  135. like I haven't seen you what do you mean

  136. you've loved me I you haven't talked to

  137. me you I didn't even know if You'

  138. thought about me right like what in the

  139. world what do you mean you've been

  140. showing me love all day long well that's

  141. the expectation right and the reality is

  142. is that we've got we've got these

  143. expectations that we don't always even

  144. realize we have and the problem with

  145. marriage many times Tim Keller hits on

  146. this really well in his book called the

  147. meaning of

  148. marriage and in this book he talks about

  149. two different marriage

  150. agreements that you can make two

  151. different ways that you can have a

  152. mutual agreement of

  153. marriage and of relationship in general

  154. and in a first world Western

  155. culture in a nation that is all about

  156. capital ISM and like all about like you

  157. go to work so you can make money and so

  158. you can help your company to make money

  159. and everything every relationship that

  160. we have is this first relationship and

  161. it is called a

  162. consumer

  163. relationship it's a consumer we love

  164. consuming we love it and when we we step

  165. into marriage with this same perspective

  166. of

  167. I'm going to bring this to the table you

  168. are going to bring this to the table and

  169. this is our consumer agreement this is

  170. the problem one of the questions that we

  171. had sent in this hits directly on the

  172. head of this issue here's the question

  173. it says why is the try it before you buy

  174. it why is that approach to marriage so

  175. wrong when we are actually told to be

  176. wise

  177. to be

  178. Discerning and to be

  179. knowledgeable I love this

  180. question because it's actually rooted

  181. it's got some it's got some biblical

  182. roots of like how do I hold these two

  183. perspectives how do I hold these a lot

  184. of times when you hear this try it

  185. before you buy it perspective you hear

  186. right like I'm never going to go to the

  187. store and pick out a pair of shoes

  188. without try bu them on first I'm never

  189. going to pick out a car without taking

  190. it for a test drive I'm never going to

  191. buy a house without doing a walkth

  192. through and checking it out and looking

  193. at that right and we get this

  194. perspective of

  195. marriage and specifically we're going to

  196. be we're going to be diving whenever

  197. we're talking about relationships and

  198. whenever we're talking about marriage

  199. we're going to be a little bit I I want

  200. to be a little bit unfiltered here so if

  201. you need to take kids into kids church

  202. because we're going to be talking about

  203. all of it

  204. uh but but when when we're talking about

  205. this of like I want to explore every

  206. area of marriage and make sure that we

  207. have everything covered so make sure

  208. that we're sexually compatible to make

  209. sure that that that like things work out

  210. the whole

  211. idea what of of of consumerism fails in

  212. marriage we were never that that idea

  213. works out out in our minds it makes

  214. sense it's logical until you see a

  215. couple different things first of all you

  216. see that let's look at the

  217. stats what

  218. [Music]

  219. happens what happens if you choose to go

  220. let's try it before we buy it and people

  221. do you know that studies of tested

  222. marriages that lived together before

  223. marriage and marriages that abstained

  224. and marriages that chose to move in

  225. together before their wedding date saw

  226. the in the reality the results were

  227. marriages that moved in together before

  228. their wedding

  229. date saw over an a 50% increase in

  230. divorce and that's starting at a 50%

  231. divorce

  232. rate we're really hurting our chances

  233. why is that reason says it's wise it's

  234. Discerning it's knowledgeable I know

  235. what I'm stepping into with this

  236. commitment now why is it why why is that

  237. actually what happens also it shows that

  238. these marriages have a lower lower

  239. satisfaction lower dedication and lower

  240. confidence in the relationship along

  241. with an increase of negative

  242. communication and proness for

  243. divorce why is

  244. this well first ultimately always comes

  245. down to design

  246. God's design for marriage it says let

  247. the marriage bed be kept holy set

  248. apart different right like we've got to

  249. we've got to make this thing the

  250. marriage bed is totally different than

  251. than anything else and I am I'm not

  252. going to let anybody or anything enter

  253. stop me and cut into the relationship

  254. that I have or I'm going to have as a

  255. single person I'm saving that marriage B

  256. for my wedding

  257. night I'm saving it because my know

  258. right

  259. now is going to help to determine my

  260. nose

  261. later because then later I'm now married

  262. to one person out of 8.1 billion

  263. people and here's the problem when I get

  264. a consumer

  265. relationship and I said try it before

  266. you buy it here's my question for you

  267. if you're comparing your marriage to

  268. trying on

  269. shoes what happens when your shoes wear

  270. out what happens when the car breaks

  271. down I've heard it

  272. said right that that dating is the free

  273. trial like moving in together it's like

  274. the free trial before you get the annual

  275. subscription right here's the problem

  276. with that let's say you are offered an

  277. app that you love and you find it really

  278. helpful and you go this is great and

  279. they have a free trial how long does the

  280. free trial go

  281. indefinitely and then after it's $100 a

  282. month but you can just use everything no

  283. ads like just you get the full app

  284. experience without any of the commitment

  285. you want to know what's going to happen

  286. no one's going to buy the app and the

  287. whole thing is going to

  288. fail because the app's going to shut

  289. down is going to end up not working

  290. because they have nobody on the other

  291. side of it allowing it to work the

  292. Covenant can't work like that and so

  293. when we step in and we go hey I want to

  294. make sure that we are

  295. exchanging of goods as best as possible

  296. you scratch my back I scratch your back

  297. you're lonely I'm lonely you've got like

  298. you you kind of like some of the same

  299. things that I like I kind of like some

  300. of that like perfect let's go let's

  301. let's make sure we are as compatible as

  302. possible and then let's just get into

  303. this agreement in this

  304. contract but what

  305. happens when the

  306. contract what happens when what happens

  307. when I I've got a contract with someone

  308. and the supplier suddenly runs out of

  309. supplies

  310. the contract's broken what happens in a

  311. marriage that's built on a contract and

  312. the person steps into a terrible season

  313. and they're not able to give in the same

  314. way that they were able to give before

  315. and then that is why Mar secular

  316. marriage counselors have no real great

  317. answer for

  318. divorce yeah it it looks like you guys

  319. kind of just drifted it looks like you

  320. guys have

  321. changed things are just not how they

  322. were yeah end it they're not providing

  323. for you what you thought and hoped that

  324. they would provide for

  325. you and so therefore this contract that

  326. you've had as

  327. consumers it's

  328. broken they didn't meet their end of the

  329. deal you didn't meet your end of the

  330. deal and so now we can just cut this

  331. whole thing

  332. out you see this it's the it the the

  333. consumer relationship if I've got a uh

  334. if if if I go to a grocery store and

  335. they suddenly stop having the stuff that

  336. I want I'm going to find myself a new

  337. grocery store cuz who is the ultimate

  338. end in a consumer

  339. relationship

  340. me now there's a totally different

  341. perspective in

  342. Christ and the end is never

  343. me the end is always him

  344. and it's a laying down of self here's

  345. the problem we've got we don't need a

  346. consumer marriage we've got consumer

  347. relationships all around

  348. us if you start failing at your job you

  349. will and should get

  350. fired right that's the

  351. contract you produce this if you don't

  352. produce that they won't produce the

  353. payment that they were giving to you

  354. that's how it should

  355. work if someone shows up to do my

  356. electrical work at my house and they

  357. don't do it the contract's

  358. broken in the same way friendships often

  359. operate on a contract right like hey

  360. we've got a lot of similarities we are

  361. we work together we've got a lot of

  362. things that we like about each other but

  363. it's as soon as some of those things

  364. start changing friendships just kind of

  365. drift it just kind of starts to

  366. end and there's something inside of us

  367. that's just like I don't like

  368. that I get fired from a job and it's

  369. more than just oh I don't have the

  370. income anymore it's like I just feel

  371. used right like I'm just a commodity

  372. yes yes literally the contract I sign

  373. says I am a commodity that you can use

  374. if you pay me now here's the

  375. difference marriage has to be

  376. different marriage has to be

  377. different Covenant is the other option

  378. you got a contract you got a consumer

  379. relationship marriage was designed as a

  380. covenant scripture says the

  381. two shall become one so that they are no

  382. longer two individuals but they are now

  383. one and here's the difference a

  384. covenant a covenant is different than a

  385. contract in that a covenant is formal

  386. binding promise where both parties

  387. pledge their entire

  388. selves to one

  389. another rather than just an exchange of

  390. goods or services and a contract you get

  391. my 9 to 5 and I got a lunch hour in

  392. between that's mine you get this

  393. specific skill set that I

  394. have you pay me here's our exchange of

  395. goods I've got a

  396. contract now a covenant is a

  397. spiritual not just a natural it's a

  398. spiritual commitment purposed to create

  399. a shared

  400. Bond it's primarily relational while a

  401. contract is transactional commitment

  402. focused on specific terms and

  403. exchanges

  404. marriage cannot operate on a contractual

  405. relationship marriage cannot operate

  406. with the constant thought of what have

  407. you done for me

  408. lately but here's the problem

  409. we have so little understanding of

  410. Covenant

  411. relationships marriage is seen as a

  412. contract as a as a consumer relationship

  413. all around in the world here we so we

  414. don't see very many Covenant

  415. relationships here's one relationship

  416. that we see that we perceive in kind of

  417. a covenant type of way it's

  418. parenting right I get sick of my kid and

  419. I'm like okay done we're broken up right

  420. right it doesn't work like that there's

  421. still a there's still a problem and and

  422. a shaming and unacceptance of that

  423. within our society because we recognize

  424. that the relationship is even more

  425. important than the individual in that in

  426. that situation now what happens when you

  427. choose a covenant relationship from

  428. parent to child but a consumer

  429. relationship from the husband and wife

  430. that's when you've got something

  431. broken that's when it's going to end in

  432. divorce that's when you find that you

  433. are more in love with and committed to

  434. your children than you are to each other

  435. and the foundation that you that your

  436. children had is

  437. broken because

  438. well they just weren't doing it for me

  439. anymore we've kind of fallen out of love

  440. we've kind of drifted away from each

  441. other and secular counseling says Yep

  442. looks like you have here's how to do so

  443. here's how to end it

  444. cordially now as a believer in marriage

  445. and looking at the difference in in what

  446. the world says marriage is in the

  447. Covenant I'm always I'm for for as long

  448. as possible I'm going to be fighting for

  449. a marriage to work we're going to say

  450. you've drifted apart let's learn how to

  451. swim back together let's learn how to

  452. forgive let's learn how to Humble

  453. ourselves let's learn how to keep no

  454. record of wrongs let's learn how to

  455. align with righteousness and with love

  456. see

  457. marriage is a reflection of our

  458. relationship with

  459. God we are we understand marriage in in

  460. in a consumer relationship but then we

  461. want God full unending Covenant towards

  462. us as we regularly break our covenant

  463. towards

  464. him and then we get offended when this

  465. marriage covenant and agreement that

  466. we've made isn't upheld in a small

  467. degree from our

  468. partner we go whoa that's

  469. offensive yes it

  470. is here's your opportunity to learn

  471. Grace and go hey divorce is not my goal

  472. and so when we set this Foundation when

  473. we set a foundation as a consumer

  474. relationship we have to intentionally

  475. transition this we have to intentionally

  476. change it from hey we've been kind of

  477. operating in the here's what you have to

  478. offer here's what I have to offer and

  479. we're not doing it in a

  480. Oneness and I want us to know this both

  481. if you're single

  482. if you're married if you're divorced I

  483. want us all to operate with this like

  484. with this understanding of this is how I

  485. date this is the way that I'm pursuing

  486. marriage this is the way that I'm

  487. pursuing that relationship maybe I'm

  488. going to be single forever and this is

  489. going to be something that is a is an

  490. understanding and actually a better

  491. understanding of our relationship to

  492. Christ he is the

  493. bridegroom we are the

  494. bride he is the one

  495. who we get to go to and say hey I know

  496. that we've made this agreement and I

  497. know that I failed a thousand times and

  498. I thank you for the grace because you've

  499. given a covenant to me as the perfect

  500. side making way for the imperfect to be

  501. able to be in relationship it's not just

  502. a

  503. contract that's our problem when we

  504. think of relation when we think of of

  505. our relationship with God and going to

  506. church and stuff like that just simply

  507. as

  508. salvation it's our consumer mindset

  509. again if I do this I get a ticket to

  510. Heaven if I don't I don't get my ticket

  511. to

  512. Heaven I've built this consumer

  513. relationship not a covenant not a a a

  514. blending of of souls Jesus says I and

  515. the father are one and I want you to

  516. experience this same Oneness with him

  517. it's all about this personal bond

  518. together that's what heaven on Earth

  519. looks like that's this whole thing like

  520. the whole idea is not get a heaven get

  521. to heaven get free ticket to heaven

  522. right like no the whole idea is this

  523. deep Covenant blood sacrificed

  524. relationship with him and I get to

  525. experience a little bit of that through

  526. my marriage here so that's why marriage

  527. is such a spiritual and legal

  528. thing that's why here's here's another

  529. question we had it says why is it so

  530. profound what is so profound about

  531. relational intimacy and sex that leaves

  532. us longing so deeply after a breakup or

  533. after a

  534. divorce the reality is is that we are

  535. both physical and Spiritual

  536. Beings and when we try to make marriage

  537. just a legal contractual agreement we

  538. miss the whole idea of what's actually

  539. happening that there is a spiritual

  540. Oneness that is occurring

  541. occurring into Unity that continues to

  542. be brought together in

  543. Christ and we are not just setting a

  544. natural contract we are submitting to a

  545. spiritual

  546. Covenant and so when it when we break up

  547. when the divorce

  548. happens the two have become

  549. one and if I take two cups of water and

  550. I pour it into one bottle of water and

  551. then I try to split it back up into two

  552. cups of water I'm not going to be

  553. getting the exact same thing returned

  554. and back back in both I'm going to be

  555. getting a blend of both and there's

  556. going to be a tearing there's going to

  557. be a ripping there's going to be a

  558. painful thing my very Soul disagrees

  559. with it and it's it's it's terrible it's

  560. painful no one ever steps into marriage

  561. going I can't wait

  562. till debt does us

  563. part

  564. right I really hope that we stay married

  565. for three years the first year is really

  566. hard the second year is bearable and the

  567. third year we hate each other want to

  568. kill each other and we're done I really

  569. hope it's like three years of misery and

  570. uh then we get a divorce that's what

  571. that like no one desires that on their

  572. wedding

  573. day no one wants that that's never the

  574. goal

  575. and so this this this deep spiritual

  576. bond is torn and it's broken and it

  577. hurts to our very

  578. core that's also why why adultery is is

  579. why adultery is more than just a legal

  580. thing we can go and we can get a legal

  581. divorce but scripture says even if

  582. you've got a legal divorce and then you

  583. go and you get remarried that that's

  584. actually considered adultery cuz

  585. spiritually speaking in the heavenlies

  586. the reality is that there's still still

  587. a spiritual Oneness going on and the

  588. contract is actually not getting broken

  589. spiritually until that adultery

  590. happens and that's that's that's why

  591. it's such a spiritual thing 1

  592. Corinthians 6 18-20 talks about

  593. this and it talks about it talks about

  594. how how sexual sin is

  595. different it says

  596. flee run away from sexual

  597. immorality can we pull the can we pull

  598. the passage up on the screen here 1

    1 Corinthians 6:1

  599. Corinthians 6:1 18-20 flee from sexual

  600. immorality all other sins a person

  601. commits are outside of the body but

  602. whoever sins sexually sins against their

  603. own body don't you know your body is a

  604. temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you

  605. who you have received from God

  606. you are not your

  607. own you are bought at a price a

  608. hefty high price of the body of Christ

  609. himself therefore honor God with your

  610. bodies we say all sin is the same

  611. scripture says there's there's an EXT

  612. there's an

  613. extra pain and grievance that it gives

  614. to the heart of God when we sin

  615. sexually it actually is he he sees it

  616. different because it's not just a sin

  617. against God it's not just a sin against

  618. someone else but it's a sin against the

  619. very Temple that he has given

  620. me it's a it's a different type of

  621. grievance that it gives to God and this

  622. is this is this is when we get in a

  623. covenant relationship here's here's a

  624. really good question that we had brought

  625. in it says what do you

  626. do if this calls back to Laura's message

  627. two weeks ago what do you do if you are

  628. doing all the connecting behaviors and

  629. your spouse

  630. isn't well in a consumer relationship

  631. what do you

  632. do I'm doing my part and I'm bringing it

  633. to the table right you're not doing your

  634. part and you're not bringing it to the

  635. table what does that mean the contract

  636. is void broken done we can tear that

  637. sucker up check the date on it I'm going

  638. to tear it up I'm going to send it back

  639. back to you torn up and you're going to

  640. see that I have done my part and you

  641. have

  642. failed as a

  643. covenant that is reflective of my

  644. relationship with Christ

  645. himself transforms the way I see it

  646. because here's what's going

  647. on here's what's going on inside

  648. questions behind questions like

  649. this there's a little bit of our flesh

  650. and what is it saying it's saying I want

  651. revenge I want to be rude I want to

  652. fight back I want to hit back I want to

  653. attack their sensitivities that only I

  654. know where they are I want to stop

  655. having to show so much

  656. grace and what is

  657. that that's I don't want to be as

  658. Christlike as I feel like I have to be

  659. in this

  660. relationship but if my relationship is

  661. intended not just for me to be to

  662. consume and to get and to receive as

  663. much as possible then actually what if

  664. the relationship is a revelation of my

  665. own sickness in my own heart that

  666. reveals I don't actually want Jesus and

  667. I don't want godliness as much as I

  668. think I do I only want it when it

  669. benefits

  670. me and now I've got this problem and I

  671. go ah I feel like I'm giving and they

  672. are

  673. not look at the

  674. score oh I got to keep no record of

  675. wrong I'm not in this I'm not in this

  676. for keeping score with my spouse I'm in

  677. this for chasing after my

  678. God but that doesn't negate the fact

  679. that a covenant is supposed to be two

  680. ways it's binding and it's supposed to

  681. be two ways and so you have to to have

  682. sit down have the conversation this is

  683. how I'd guide you to have that

  684. conversation if this is your situation

  685. whoever texted this in if this is your

  686. situation I want you to do this I want

  687. you to sit down with your spouse and say

  688. Hey I want to go through this series I

  689. want to go through this book that was

  690. recommended in the series I want to go

  691. through this stuff together and maybe

  692. you're not able to have the conversation

  693. right away maybe there's too much

  694. tension going on and so instead go

  695. separately watch the messages separately

  696. write down your notes take tons of notes

  697. as much pause it take a whole bunch of

  698. notes Journal about it all the things

  699. that that means to you and then when you

  700. are getting ready we're going to come

  701. back together and we're going to discuss

  702. it right before then go back through

  703. your

  704. notes and everything that says you don't

  705. you haven't why don't you cross it

  706. out everything that said says I need to

  707. I should I will

  708. start highlight

  709. it and guess what your spouse is

  710. probably going to totally miss the giant

  711. big obvious one that's like I don't I

  712. don't need all those other things I just

  713. need like I need this thing why don't

  714. you see that let's walk in the journey

  715. together we can continue this

  716. relationship on again but the whole idea

  717. is I'm going to look and I'm going to

  718. let my heart be exposed to Christ we're

  719. going to step into Christian Counseling

  720. we're going to step into into

  721. relationship and into communication

  722. together where I go hey here's the

  723. reality when you say these things to

  724. me I recognize it's not you're that you

  725. that's the enemy it's my heart that's

  726. the

  727. enemy because I hear I don't love you

  728. anymore what I hear is you're not worthy

  729. what I hear is is is I'm not good enough

  730. what I hear is these things and I my my

  731. heart is so sensitive and I'm so weak

  732. and I'm in in this area and and I need

  733. to lean tighter to the Covenant with the

  734. Lord in

  735. this because our goal in marriage is to

  736. model after Christ's Covenant with us a

  737. Christ centered Covenant you want to

  738. know what it looks

  739. like if we can get the uh keyboardist up

  740. here

  741. come on

  742. up what I want to what I want to

  743. highlight here is when God sets a

  744. covenant with

  745. man he has two different types of

  746. covenants

  747. one says this is what I'm going to do

  748. this is what you're going to do and he

  749. says if you follow me I will make your

  750. land fruitful I will make sure that you

  751. are that that no enemy that comes

  752. against you will ever Prosper I will

  753. make sure that all this stuff happens

  754. it's going to be Grace if you reject me

  755. I don't care how much you water your

  756. agriculture Community it will not

  757. produce and if you reject me the enemies

  758. and the people surrounding you are going

  759. to conquer you and he sets a covenant

  760. like that but that's but that's these

  761. like temporal national government

  762. like covenants that he makes and then he

  763. makes a higher Covenant he does this

  764. with

  765. Abraham he does this

  766. uh with with Jesus he reaffirms

  767. this and what happens is is with

  768. Abraham that he steps out of his tent

  769. and he sees God show up and he takes

  770. this sacrifice and he splits it in half

  771. and it says that God walks through the

  772. sacrifice now what happened

  773. traditionally in those days is when two

  774. kings would make an agreement they would

  775. make a sacrifice they would split it and

  776. they both would walk through hand in

  777. hand together saying we are going to do

  778. our parts in this

  779. agreement What God

  780. Says is I'm going to do my

  781. part and you're going to fail at your

  782. part but I uphold my

  783. part I'm the one who does the

  784. work Jesus says we we recognize our sin

  785. separates us from the life of God so the

  786. consequences of sin is death and he says

  787. I will do my part

  788. you you'll be incredibly

  789. imperfect and just do your best to keep

  790. humbly submitting to me again and again

  791. every time you

  792. fail that's what I'm supposed to be

  793. modeling

  794. that's the actual design that

  795. marriage is written

  796. after that's why it's such a grievance

  797. Jesus says you are permitted to get a

  798. divorce you are permitted but it's just

  799. not the design it's not the goal it's

  800. not the heart the whole thing is a

  801. picture of my relationship with you and

  802. all the offenses that you feel like you

  803. have carried in that I've got a thousand

  804. more

  805. so if we can stand up in here what I

  806. want to do is I've got I've got a

  807. marriage a new marriage covenant

  808. here because I believe that

  809. marriage if we've made the wrong

  810. agreement in our

  811. marriage if we've made the wrong

  812. agreement or maybe you're just like I

  813. want to make sure that I remember this

  814. for when I start dating for when I get

  815. married for when I get engaged something

  816. like that if you're like man I need to

  817. remember this so that I don't set this I

  818. give you give typ of scratching each

  819. other's back type of situation maybe

  820. that's what you want but I've got a new

  821. marriage covenant here and it's just

  822. designed off of what we see within

  823. scripture and I've got if we can get if

  824. we can get the ushers to just spread

  825. these out I got four different piles

  826. here we can just spread them out around

  827. here so that you can come up and grab

  828. these but here's here's what the the

  829. marriage covenant can we get it pulled

  830. up on the

  831. screen and this is the agreement it says

  832. we commit

  833. we commit to us do we have

  834. that do we have the marriage covenant

  835. can we get that thrown up on the screen

  836. here we go we commit to us for as long

  837. as we

  838. live pacing ahead in our

  839. trials and rejoicing together in our

  840. successes we will pursue Unity even in

  841. the face of disagreement

  842. and we will choose

  843. love over

  844. winning remember that as soon as you

  845. start competing and who wins the battle

  846. who wins the argument you've already

  847. [Music]

  848. lost with our whole

  849. selves we

  850. promise

  851. Mutual Selfless Love unconditional love

  852. and lifelong commitment

  853. for the glory of God and the

  854. discipleship of each

  855. other for the glory of

  856. God and the discipleship of each

  857. other so that my marriage my

  858. relationship is not just about me

  859. getting what I want but us becoming who

  860. he's

  861. designed

  862. that is our

  863. covenant that is our commitment

  864. and if I want that then I say no to the

  865. things that I need to say no to in

  866. marriage and in

  867. dating and in

  868. preparation so that I can say yes to the

  869. greatest

  870. yes so that I can say I'm going to I'm

  871. going to shape this Covenant and we're

  872. not going to just agree on a contract we

  873. are going to stand firm on an agreement

  874. that is through the Lord and the Lord's

  875. eyes and it's his witness and then I

  876. want you to take this I want you to pray

  877. it over yourselves I want you to do it

  878. regularly I want you to do it frequently

  879. because one time one sermon it ain't

  880. going to cut it dive into this pray this

  881. every single week and here's the thing

  882. if you've got a spouse that's not a

  883. Believer or does not engag with this

  884. there's only one

  885. line there's only one line that we

  886. promise Mutual Selfless

  887. Love everything else you can just

  888. replace we with I

  889. commit to us for as long as I live I'll

  890. Pace ahead in our trials and rejoice

  891. together in our successes I will pursue

  892. unity in the face of disagreement and I

  893. will choose love over winning with my

  894. whole self I promise Selfless Love and

  895. lifelong commitment even if my spouse

  896. may not be able to promise the same

  897. Christlike love because they've never

  898. received the Christlike love you want to

  899. know who's going to be the Revelation

  900. Giver of Christlike like

  901. love there's no one better than

  902. you for the glory of God and the

  903. discipleship of each other it still

  904. stands the Covenant still

  905. stands and you can set this Covenant and

  906. you can put it in stone and you can say

  907. I'm making this agreement and I want to

  908. I I want to invite you guys up if you

  909. haven't taken from it already I want to

  910. invite you up to do that and I want to

  911. pray over our relationships I want to

  912. pray over our marriages and I want to

  913. pray and and if if you

  914. are if you're going man I want I want to

  915. make this Covenant whether you are

  916. married or whether you're like I'm

  917. setting my future marriage on a covenant

  918. like

  919. this I'm setting it on this Foundation

  920. if that's you I just want you I want you

  921. to offer your sacrifice to the Lord and

  922. go okay God it's all you he's already

  923. paid the price you can grab it and I

  924. want you to hold the Covenant up and I

  925. want you to give it to God and I want us

  926. to pray together we can close our eyes

  927. here throw your hands in the air if

  928. that's

  929. you say God we commit to this God I give

  930. it all to you Lord May our marriages in

  931. this room go ahead in your own words be

  932. praying to God in your own words be

  933. praying to him Lord I pray that the

  934. marriages in this room would be

  935. reflective of more than just an exchange

  936. of

  937. goods I pray it'd be more than just an

  938. change of services I pray this would be

  939. a Divine

  940. Covenant where we choose Grace like we

  941. have received Lord I pray for the

  942. marriages that are in this room that are

  943. struggling I pray for the marriages that

  944. are in this room that are Hollow I pray

  945. for the marriages that are in this room

  946. that are just

  947. existing Lord I pray that there would be

  948. life found in you in these marriages I

  949. pray that you would restore intim iny I

  950. pray you would restore a love for each

  951. other and that it would be rooted in a

  952. love for Christ and Lord I pray that as

  953. we submit to you that we would find that

  954. marriage is not just

  955. endurable not just

  956. enjoyable but the greatest most

  957. fulfilling thing that we experience

  958. human to human on this

  959. Earth Lord I believe for a higher

  960. calling of marriage in this place Lord I

  961. pray over the marriages that are not

  962. yet that can establish a covenant can

  963. establish a

  964. promise before it's ever even said that

  965. we would look for people who are not

  966. just going to meet a need that we feel

  967. like we have but people that will align

  968. with a Divine

  969. [Music]

  970. Covenant Lord I pray for marriages that

  971. are more in love with you than each

  972. other

  973. other I pray for marriages that are

  974. united because they chase after

  975. you and therefore chase after each

  976. other and God I

  977. pray that through that that our homes

  978. would be changed that our children would

  979. be blessed and that generation to

  980. generation to generation we will have

  981. established a covenant that can be

  982. modeled that can be followed and that

  983. our children and Our Generations would

  984. be able able to say I get what selfless

  985. Covenant looks like cuz I saw it in my

  986. mom and dad cuz I saw it in the areas

  987. where

  988. I I saw how much weakness there

  989. was yet the love was greater Lord I pray

  990. your love is

  991. greater in the mighty name of Jesus we

  992. pray

  993. amen and I want to say real quick before

  994. we finish up here you can come on up but

  995. I I

  996. this Covenant that the Lord has it's a

  997. marriage covenant it's a promise but

  998. it's it's actually

  999. established in

1000. Christ and if you've never aligned if

1001. you've never had that moment where you

1002. go man that's the type of Covenant that

1003. I want of giving my whole self to Christ

1004. and to The God Who gave his whole self

  1005. for

1006. me I want you to know that you're not

1007. alone in that and I want to meet you up

1008. here at the prayer bear if you need

1009. prayer or if you want to say I'm going

1010. to give my life to Jesus for the first

1011. time ever for the first time in a long

1012. time I want to meet you up

1013. here because your life is about to be

1014. changed and because this the way that we

1015. respond to this can't be done alone and

1016. it has to be done together and I want to

1017. help walk with you and give you some

1018. guidance and give you some some tips if

1019. you need a Bible I love to give it to

1020. you over here so please meet me if

  1021. that's you saying I want to establish a

1022. covenant with God would you meet me

1023. right over here for the rest of us come

1024. on can we give a hand to the word of the

1025. Lord let's give him some praise

  1026. amen amen

1027. amen I love that concept Pastor Drew of

  1028. contracts being incompatible with

1029. marriage you guys can all have a seat if

1030. you'd like to take a seat here um in

1031. software the way code is written is a

1032. bunch of if then statements okay if this

  1033. happens then that

1034. happens and a lot of times in marriage

1035. there's a lot of if then statements that

  1036. get written

1037. right if you are kind to me I will be

1038. kind to you MH if you are not giving to

1039. me then I will not be giving to

1040. you uh but one of the things that's

1041. interesting is there's this just a tiny

1042. little shift in the if then statement

1043. that turns it from a contract into a

1044. covenant and it's this if you are kind

1045. to me I will still love you if you are

1046. not kind to me I will still love you if

1047. you give to me I will give to you if you

1048. do not give to me I will still give to

1049. you and you know this was modeled uh in

1050. 2 Timothy 2:13 it says say even if we

    2 Timothy 2:13

  1051. are

  1052. faithless he remains

1053. faithful why it says because he cannot

1054. disown himself okay so when a spouse is

1055. not doing something for you or is doing

  1056. something

  1057. negative it's actually disowning

1058. yourself to respond in like manner okay

1059. but it's honoring who who Christ is in

1060. you to remain loving no matter what and

1061. when you approach it that way all your

1062. relationships your marriage just turns

1063. into one big spiritual practice of being

1064. formed more and more and more and more

1065. into the image of Christ yeah and it

1066. kind of doesn't even matter what happens

1067. on the other side because as David said

1068. the Lord is my shepherd I don't need a

1069. thing I shall not want there's nothing

1070. else that needs to be added to just

1071. Christ alone and that's the good news of

1072. Jesus is that just Christ alone for you

  1073. is enough for

1074. everything including your marriage no

1075. matter what state it's in mhm yeah
