  1. man thank you

  2. guys These are moments I love Can we get

  3. Yeah you can go ahead and bring you can

  4. bring the bring the table on up Uh I'm

  5. Pastor Drew I'm the lead pastor here and

  6. I uh you guys are in for a treat I'm not

  7. actually the one preaching today Uh but

  8. I want to give honor a little bit before

  9. uh but before Theo comes on up Uh Theo

  10. is a longtime mentor of mine and he's

  11. got a message that he's going to be

  12. bringing today and uh and and I'm really

  13. I'm I'm just so grateful I'm so grateful

  14. for you Theo I'm grateful for when I was

  15. a freshman in

  16. college He he he he took me under his

  17. wing right after I don't even know if

  18. you know about this Right after I faced

  19. like a a big ministry rejection that

  20. that like I needed like I I I needed

  21. time to recover from Theo took me under

  22. his wing and uh and and I learned so

  23. much about the heart of God and the

  24. heart of ministry and and he's been a

  25. mentor and I've kind of just we we've

  26. kept in contact and then he became a a

  27. member on our management board as we get

  28. started and we need people pastors

  29. people that I trust from the outside

  30. that can help lead collective church and

  31. lead me as we are trying to get this

  32. thing going in an honorable righteous

  33. good way And I believe I need to come

  34. under a covering as well And so he came

  35. on there and then and and then when he

  36. had a transition in his life he and his

  37. family go we want to start coming here

  38. to collective And I think that shows a

  39. little something of what God's doing

  40. here Something that's really special Uh

  41. and he has got incredible wisdom and uh

  42. and and he and his family are going to

  43. be moving in like a month to uh to to

  44. Colorado for a ministry opportunity for

  45. Chelsea's got a his wife's got a

  46. ministry opportunity down there and I

  47. really want I I was like fighting I know

  48. it's a crazy season for you and I really

  49. want for us to be able to hear from him

  50. So please can you grab out your notes

  51. Open up your notes Open up your Bibles

  52. Let's get ready God's got something good

  53. listen to the words and to the spirit

  54. that Theo carries Can we give a hand for

  55. Theo

  56. Amen Well thank you Drew Um it's crazy

  57. Uh when I went to college I

  58. literally smoked my last bowl of weed

  59. jumped in my car and went to Bible

  60. college

  61. it Now um God is good and uh I had been

  62. in Bible college for a semester and then

  63. I came back and um I I didn't have a

  64. place to go back to like I my family

  65. wasn't close or connected and I was like

  66. well if I go back and I hang out with

  67. the people that I knew before what am I

  68. going to do So I just stayed at college

  69. over

  70. Christmas and I don't know if Drew and

  71. Mason if you remember this Uh you guys

  72. invited me to come have Christmas dinner

  73. with you which was incredible because

  74. they were at the college and so uh in a

  75. way uh your family has been uh more of a

  76. blessing to me than you even know And uh

  77. moving to Colorado is not something that

  78. we thought was on our radar We got a

  79. random phone call in December from a

  80. former intern of Chelsea's that said

  81. "Hey uh our department head is leaving

  82. Do you do you want to apply God told me

  83. to call you." And next thing you know uh

  84. we're selling our house and moving to

  85. Colorado Um and it's amazing how God

  86. works And right now the story that I am

  87. working on in my

  88. life is how do I say yes to a call that

  89. I didn't see coming that I didn't know

  90. was in my life And now uh my and my wife

  91. gets to do her dream job in her dream

  92. location the place that she was born And

  93. it's incredible how God has opened all

  94. that up and we're navigating like how do

  95. we how do we do all of that How do we

  96. say goodbye How do we uh move How do we

  97. handle the stress How do we get all the

  98. pieces as we're moving nine hours away

  99. And I am

  100. excited about how I get to share God's

  101. story through that whole process from

  102. the moment like when I was dragging my

  103. feet so hard on this like I was not like

  104. I was like I don't know I don't know And

  105. I knew like she was on the phone and I

  106. was like "Crap we're moving to

  107. Colorado." Like I can't I kind of just

  108. knew like God was doing something And so

  109. after we went down there I we

  110. um I was dragging my feet and I decided

  111. you know what I I need to commit to this

  112. because Chelsea was ready So I went up

  113. to our room She was folding clothes on

  114. the bed and I said "Babe I I think we um

  115. I think you need to sign the offer

  116. letter and we need to go to Colorado."

  117. And I said "Can we pray together?" We

  118. prayed together And within 10 m it was

  119. between 10 to 20 minutes I'm on the

  120. couch Kai's in the shower Chelsea's at

  121. the kitchen table Nobody except for us

  122. and God knows we're going to sign that

  123. letter and send it off and she gets a

  124. message from the executive pastor saying

  125. "Hey if you accept we'll cover your

  126. moving

  127. costs." God yeah amen There's I got like

  128. five more stories of what God has done

  129. but I don't have time to tell you them

  130. all But I'm excited because I just

  131. constantly see God working And the more

  132. we open ourselves up to him every day

  133. the more he seems to step in

  134. And I think in the midst of this series

  135. love uh living worthy of your story

  136. That's what I want to talk about today

  137. But love people into the light Uh our

  138. stories are are powerful It's a

  139. testimony of what God is doing And

  140. stories they inspire me and move me in

  141. in ways that just other things don't

  142. And I remember I had the unique

  143. opportunity to go into people's homes

  144. for a water restoration company and I'd

  145. help them put their homes back together

  146. when it would flood or catch fire It's

  147. pretty special to walk with somebody

  148. through that And one day I got to go

  149. into um this lady's house I'm gonna call

  150. her

  151. Shelly She was an older lady She didn't

  152. understand everything She's like "Can

  153. you just like sit down with me and walk

  154. through all of this I just want to make

  155. sure I'm not getting ripped off and I

  156. understand everything that's going to

  157. happen in my home So I do that and I'm

  158. talking with her and I notice she has an

  159. accent and I was like "So so that's a is

  160. that a European accent Like what is

  161. that?" And she goes "Oh it's French." I

  162. was like "A French How'd you end up in

  163. Omaha Nebraska?" Obviously military

  164. connection right It's in Belleview And

  165. she says "I met my

  166. husband after World War

  167. II." And I was like Wait a second That

  168. means French France World War II And I I

  169. let her talk a little bit She was uh

  170. after World War II a ski guide in the

  171. Swiss Alps and her husband was from the

  172. States and was stationed in Germany and

  173. took a week-long vacation and she was

  174. one of the ski guides and that's how

  175. they met and then they got married and

  176. moved to Omaha and then they had a bunch

  177. of kids and a family and it was just

  178. kind of cool to hear that story And I

  179. said "So you you were in France during

  180. World War II." And she said "Theo when I

  181. was seven years old Nazi

  182. Germany occupied and invaded my hometown

  183. From the time I was 7 to 11 years old we

  184. lived under their thumb of uh of

  185. occupancy." And she and the way she

  186. talked about it was just different I was

  187. just I was moved I was like "How do you

  188. go through something like that How do

  189. you live through that And I was also

  190. moved because that story when she's

  191. gone that story's kind of gone with her

  192. So I spent the next 15 20 minutes

  193. talking to her about life and about

  194. faith and family and all that stuff and

  195. just soaking up what I could And it

  196. inspired me to hear how she overcame

  197. that how she lived in light of that

  198. And stories do

  199. that Every single one of us in this room

  200. has a story that is powerful It may not

  201. be I survived Nazi

  202. occupation and it may not be I did this

  203. on the way to Bible college Uh but it's

  204. something that God has done in your life

  205. And when you begin to express

  206. that it

  207. inspires and changes lives And I want to

  208. ask you what is your

  209. story What has God done in your

  210. life that could shape someone else's

  211. life And it doesn't have to be crazy It

  212. doesn't have to be big

  213. I think there are more people in this

  214. room that need to know what it's like to

  215. grow up in the church and to find your

  216. own faith and to stay faithful to Jesus

  217. while going to

  218. college I think there are people in this

  219. room that need to know how you stayed

  220. faithful and handled when your parents

  221. got a divorce I think people in this

  222. room need to know what it's like uh to

  223. live through the loss of a family member

  224. and know that God is not uh avoiding or

  225. punishing you Right There are so many

  226. things and the way you have walked with

  227. God through those circumstances can show

  228. others how they ought to and how they

  229. can walk with God And there's stories

  230. that everyone needs to hear Stories are

  231. powerful

  232. See who were you before

  233. Jesus How did you meet Jesus And what

  234. has he done And if you can sum that up

  235. in two minutes or five minutes or 10

  236. minutes like you should who were you

  237. before Jesus What did he do in your life

  238. How are you different now And if you can

  239. just talk about that in two minutes five

  240. minutes it's powerful

  241. through work I do a lot of network

  242. marketing which just means I hang out

  243. with a lot of people get to know them

  244. and we send business around And so I'm

  245. in a lot of different groups or a lot of

  246. different uh uh open houses or events

  247. where just ton of people talking in the

  248. room And I get to often present at those

  249. types of

  250. things And I decided early on that well

  251. I was a pastor for 20 years I probably

  252. just need to get that out of the way So

  253. I just tell people my story I kind of

  254. would get up in these things and I'd say

  255. I do two truths and a lie And the two

  256. truths were I've been arrested seven

  257. times and I was a pastor for 20

  258. years And like it's like what are we

  259. doing here Who is this guy You know and

  260. it and it's like don't worry I've

  261. changed right I was I was arrested a

  262. long time ago then became a pastor for

  263. 20 years But people want to

  264. know is he

  265. real Because when you start talking

  266. about Jesus when you start telling

  267. people about what he's done in your life

  268. or who he saved or how he saved you they

  269. want to know is that authentic Is it

  270. real

  271. And it it kind of puts put pressure on

  272. me because I knew then that if there

  273. were people in the room that had a faith

  274. story that they would be drawn to me and

  275. I could possibly minister to them And I

  276. got some cool stories that come out of

  277. that And also it puts pressure on me

  278. because now uh when I'm out on the golf

  279. course at a golf scramble where

  280. everybody's getting absolutely hammered

  281. I have to control

  282. myself right It's

  283. pressure And so I do I live in a way

  284. that is worthy of my

  285. story right Do I live in a way that

  286. speaks to what Jesus has done in my life

  287. and wants to continue to do And and when

  288. I think of your story and and whatever

  289. that might be do you live in a way that

  290. when people were to hear that story and

  291. then see your daily life they would go

  292. "Wow that's why that story matters

  293. And I want to challenge us to do two

  294. things today Two big things that one is

  295. are you living worthy of your story

  296. That's my first question for you And my

  297. second question is a little more

  298. difficult Are you using your story to

  299. call people to follow

  300. Jesus Because it's not just about living

  301. your story and living worthy of your

  302. story At some point the church has to

  303. become people that call others to join

  304. them on that

  305. journey So are you living worthy of your

  306. story I love what the Apostle Paul

  307. writes to the church at Ephesus Uh if if

  308. you're not familiar with the book of

  309. Ephesians Paul is writing to the church

  310. when he's in prison He helped plant the

  311. church Now he's in Rome He's in jail And

  312. he's trying to tell them how to live in

  313. the first three chapters are this

  314. incredible picture of God's blessing in

  315. our life Like when you accept Jesus and

  316. and receive the forgiveness that comes

  317. freely through his grace and the work on

  318. the cross you you are adopted into

  319. sunships You're given every spiritual

  320. blessing in Christ Like there's it's

  321. amazing You should read it I I sometimes

  322. just go back to Ephesians to remind

  323. myself that God has given me everything

  324. I need And then he gets to chapter 4 and

  325. this is what he says Verse one and two

  326. As a prisoner for the Lord then I urge

  327. you to live a life worthy of the calling

  328. you have received Be completely humble

  329. and gentle Be patient bearing with one

  330. another in love And it's funny the next

  331. few verses he's going to talk about the

  332. church building each other up and

  333. supporting each other And so he's like

  334. "Hey hey you want to live worthy of your

  335. story Start by bearing with one another

  336. in love as part of the

  337. church It's going to be messy because

  338. we're

  339. messy." And he he's trying to encourage

  340. the church to live a life worthy of that

  341. calling And in verses uh 17-2 and I just

  342. want to read some of this because I I

  343. don't know it's powerful to me He says

  344. this So I tell you this and insist on it

  345. in the Lord that you must no longer live

  346. as the Gentiles do in the futility of

  347. their thinking They are darkened in

  348. their understanding and separated from

  349. the life of God because of the ignorance

  350. that is in them due to the hardening of

  351. their hearts Having lost all sensitivity

  352. they have given themselves over to

  353. sensuality so as to indulge in every

  354. kind of impurity And they are full of

  355. greed That however is not the way of

  356. life you learned when you heard about

  357. Christ and were taught in him accordance

  358. with the truth that is in Jesus

  359. You were taught with regard to the

  360. former way of your life to put off the

  361. old self which is being corrupted by its

  362. deceitful desires to be made new in the

  363. attitude of your minds and to put on the

  364. new self created to be like God in true

  365. righteousness and holiness Therefore

  366. each of you must put off falsehood and

  367. speak truthfully to your neighbor For

  368. all we are all members of one

  369. body And he's saying "Guys we understand

  370. that Jesus didn't die on the

  371. cross for you to stay the

  372. same Jesus died on the cross to forgive

  373. you for your sins so that you could be

  374. transformed and part of the kingdom of

  375. heaven." The message that Jesus preached

  376. every town he went into was "Repent for

  377. the kingdom of heaven is at hand turn

  378. away from your old life and step into my

  379. kingdom into a new life that I have for

  380. you And the power of the gospel is that

  381. you don't have to do that alone because

  382. he says "I'm going to give you the Holy

  383. Spirit to help you do

  384. it right I'm just not going to leave you

  385. out there to carry the weight and the

  386. burden

  387. yourself

  388. but but your life ought to be

  389. different."

  390. Ephesians 5:1 says

    Ephesians 5:1

  391. this "Follow God's example therefore as

  392. dearly loved children and walk in the

  393. way of love just as Christ loved us and

  394. gave himself up for us as a fragrant

  395. offering and a sacrifice to God." And I

  396. hope that you took to heart a few weeks

  397. ago when when Drew was calling us to

  398. love our

  399. one to to find a to pray for them and

  400. then find a way to express love that

  401. really really impacts

  402. them Live a life of

  403. love But sometimes I think in America we

  404. we take the gospel message and say love

  405. is love is all you need Right What's the

  406. song How do you do I can't sing like

  407. Drew and Morgan Um no Drew got up here

  408. to sing the other day other week and I

  409. was like my goodness what can't he do

  410. But because he was I was like who how

  411. can you sing like that Anyway uh but um

  412. but he says this this is what Paul goes

  413. on to say But among you there must not

  414. be even a hint of sexual immorality or

  415. any kind of impurity or of greed because

  416. these are improper for God's holy people

  417. Nor should there be obscinity foolish

  418. talk or coarse joking which are out of

  419. place but rather

  420. thanksgiving For of this you can be sure

  421. no

  422. immoral impure or greedy person such a

  423. person is an

  424. idoltor has any inheritance in the

  425. kingdom of Christ and of God

  426. And Jesus didn't

  427. just die so that we could stay the same

  428. He called us to into a life of

  429. love and a life of

  430. holiness where our words and our deeds

  431. and the things we do and the way we

  432. treat people all

  433. matter And living worthy of your

  434. story when you encounter Jesus and you

  435. surrender to him is about being

  436. transformed day after day after day And

  437. are you living worthy of his

  438. sacrifice And I don't know that most of

  439. us are like come to church on a Sunday

  440. and then go out and just do whatever

  441. like it's a free-for-all and like this

  442. is our time to repent wash ourselves

  443. clean and go back out for a party I

  444. don't think that's most the people in

  445. the room I think most people struggle

  446. with the daytoday consistency that

  447. becomes a slow

  448. creep Uh back in 2019

  449. um I just I I could not stay where I was

  450. a pastor at any longer And I we almost

  451. moved to California We interviewed all

  452. over and I ended up moving to a church

  453. just down the road from here It was a

  454. small struggling church plant And we

  455. were there for about eight months and

  456. COVID hit And like we thought like man

  457. we're putting the wheels back on the bus

  458. We're getting this thing going Like it's

  459. starting to heal People are getting

  460. healthy Like we're not as wounded as we

  461. were when I got here And it felt like

  462. God was really really moving And then CO

  463. hit and we had one of the best years

  464. we've ever had It it but 2021 came

  465. around and I was just

  466. tired I was uh struck like it was just a

  467. tough tough year And then we found out

  468. some medical things in our family and it

  469. just kind of took like our my emotional

  470. health for sure

  471. uh down to like nothing And I remember

  472. sitting there thinking I don't want to

  473. help another person through their

  474. problems as a pastor because I don't

  475. even know how to help myself through

  476. those problems That's where I was as a

  477. pastor I was like dude I don't I don't

  478. even I don't I can't do this But I I

  479. didn't know how to step away without

  480. being a

  481. failure And um I grabbed lunch with a

  482. friend And we sat down at a Chipotle and

  483. I was telling him about what was going

  484. on He says "Theo I God wants me to tell

  485. you about

  486. Elijah." Said "Elijah went and was fed

  487. by raven ravens and let God minister to

  488. him." And then there was a drought and

  489. for three years he took care of a widow

  490. and her son and nobody else He says "You

  491. can still be faithful to God's calling

  492. if you're not a pastor but let God heal

  493. you and you worry about your family

  494. right

  495. now guys That was like three years

  496. ago and and I just can't tell you how

  497. crazy that it it was the way God works

  498. because I needed that But then like we

  499. stepped away from ministry and we visit

  500. started visiting churches trying to

  501. figure out where we'd settle down and

  502. about a year

  503. later we weren't visiting churches as

  504. often Uh and sometime I I don't know I

  505. think there are times where we would go

  506. a month without going to church towards

  507. the end of it

  508. and and we still prayed every night

  509. together as a family We still did all

  510. the things that we would do but me and

  511. Chelsea looked at each other and we're

  512. like you know if we don't start going

  513. back to

  514. church I'm not sure if we're going to

  515. keep going to

  516. church I was a pastor for 20 years and

  517. it was easy for me to get out of the

  518. habit of that commitment once I started

  519. down that

  520. path And and I think that all of our

  521. lives When life gets difficult when life

  522. gets hard when your life gets rocked

  523. when there's a challenge or an upheaval

  524. it's easy for us to walk away from the

  525. thing that we know we need most which is

  526. Jesus in our lives in the presence of

  527. the church community to walk with us and

  528. support us And and for us it was like it

  529. it wasn't like we were in danger of

  530. walking away from Jesus but I can tell

  531. you that I talk with people every single

  532. week who say "I just got out of the

  533. habit of going." Oh yeah I was a worship

  534. leader but I don't really go to church

  535. anymore Oh yeah We go on We just have a

  536. lot of sports stuff so you know with

  537. baseball and all that we just don't make

  538. it out a whole lot So we maybe go once a

  539. month get over there And and I wish it

  540. was a abnormal

  541. conversation but I I'm literally running

  542. through the names of people who have

  543. walked away and aren't living out their

  544. faith in any way shape or form And it

  545. just happened slowly over time And I

  546. think Jesus has a challenge for us

  547. He speaks to his disciples and he tells

  548. them something that if we were to

  549. practice it would confront that problem

  550. It would challenge us in disciplehip and

  551. in life And this is what he says in Luke

    Luke 9:21

  552. 9:21 And for context the Apostle Peter

  553. has just proclaimed that Jesus is the

  554. Messiah that God has sent to save the

  555. world Peter has just proclaimed that

  556. It's kind of the first time that anybody

  557. has fully expressed it And this is

  558. Jesus's response He says it says Jesus

  559. strictly warned them not to tell

  560. anyone And he said "The Son of Man must

  561. suffer many things and be rejected by

  562. the elders the chief priests and the

  563. teachers of the law and he must be

  564. killed and on the third day raised to

  565. life."

  566. Then he said to them all "Whoever wants

  567. to be my disciple must deny themselves

  568. and take up their cross daily and follow

  569. me For whoever wants to save their life

  570. will lose it but whoever loses their

  571. life for me will save it What good is it

  572. for someone to gain the whole world and

  573. that lose or forfeit their very self

  574. Whoever is ashamed of me in my words the

  575. son of man will be ashamed of them when

  576. he comes in his glory and in the glory

  577. of the father and the holy angels Truly

  578. I tell you some who are standing here

  579. will not taste death before death before

  580. they see the kingdom of

  581. God And Jesus says "Here is my purpose

  582. I am coming to fulfill God's will which

  583. is to die on the cross be buried and

  584. raised from the dead in three days That

  585. is my cross That is my burden That is

  586. God's plan And he says if you want to be

  587. my

  588. disciples if you want to you must deny

  589. yourself They must deny themselves And

  590. it's like wait a second wait a second

  591. You're saying that some at some point

  592. Jesus the desires of my heart are going

  593. to conflict

  594. with your desires for

  595. me and you want me then to deny

  596. myself Okay that's what it means to be a

  597. disciple But he but he doesn't stop

  598. there He says you they need to take up

  599. their

  600. cross They need to take up their

  601. cross Not Jesus's

  602. cross Jesus's cross was the

  603. cross but it was God's

  604. plan Your cross my cross is God's plan

  605. for our

  606. life And Jesus is saying if you want to

  607. be my disciple not only do you deny

  608. yourself but you pick up my plan for

  609. your life

  610. every single day submitting to that

  611. plan and then you

  612. follow me That means you learn from me

  613. You can walk in my

  614. footsteps That you can do what I do That

  615. you can go where I go That you can be

  616. with me where I am at You follow him

  617. wherever he leads And if you can do that

  618. on a daily

  619. basis if you can do that on a daily

  620. basis pick up your cross deny yourself

  621. when push comes to shove you will begin

  622. to become more and more and more and

  623. more like Jesus every single day And I'm

  624. not saying you're not going to fail I'm

  625. not saying you have to be perfect I'm

  626. not saying there's not going to be

  627. conflict or tension But I'm saying that

  628. if you can try

  629. that your life will be transformed in

  630. incredible ways Right Um it means that

  631. when you get into a fight at church

  632. you're not just going to leave the

  633. church It It means that when somebody

  634. calls out your sin you're not just going

  635. to run away You're going to evaluate it

  636. It means that you'll actually take time

  637. to pray and talk to Jesus and see what's

  638. said in his word and get into biblical

  639. community right Like you're you'll jump

  640. into that

  641. It means that when you're engaged or

  642. dating that you're going to set

  643. appropriate boundaries while waiting to

  644. get married I know that's crazy but

  645. Jesus desire is for you to wait until

  646. you're married to have

  647. sex It means that you'll actually

  648. compare your life to the teachings of

  649. Jesus and then try to adjust

  650. Jesus says "Deny yourself take up your

  651. cross and follow me." And here's what

  652. happens when you start doing that The

  653. fruit in your life will be exponential

  654. You will start to see things happening

  655. in you And people will start to notice

  656. The people around you will go "Why are

  657. they different Why are they good Why are

  658. they kind Why do they love in the way

  659. that they do?" Uh I was driving a van

  660. full of teenagers once back from a

  661. concert and before the concert we

  662. stopped at an A&W and a Taco Bell Bad

  663. decision And I and

  664. I So we're on the way back and one of

  665. the kids had too much soda and candy as

  666. well And we're about halfway

  667. back got another 20 minutes and he just

  668. hurls everywhere in the 15 passenger

  669. church

  670. van Um it was bad Like we pull over like

  671. you know you're hoping that worst case

  672. other kids don't start throwing up or

  673. whatever And we you know we handled it

  674. all And one of them said to me uh one

  675. there were three siblings there One of

  676. them whose parents have gone to church

  677. and they were in the church because the

  678. parents gone to

  679. church said "Wow if that would have

  680. happened my dad would have flipped out

  681. and like made us walk home How come you

  682. aren't angry at us right now?" And I was

  683. just blown away that there was that

  684. identification that that like "Oh you're

  685. treating me differently than how I

  686. expect to be treated."

  687. what is and I and I got to love and

  688. disciple that family in a lot of awesome

  689. ways But my point is is that your

  690. friends are going to see Your family's

  691. going to

  692. see Your kids are going to see If you

  693. have kids one of your deepest desires is

  694. probably that they would come and follow

  695. Jesus

  696. I hope that my life is so worthy of the

  697. gospel the way I live that my son sees

  698. that and says "I want to

  699. follow Jesus like my dad follows Jesus."

  700. And that can happen when

  701. you die to yourself

  702. daily And so here's my my challenge As

  703. you start to live like this you're going

  704. to earn the right to call people to

  705. follow

  706. Jesus I say that again If you start to

  707. live like this if you live worthy of

  708. your story you will get the opportunity

  709. to call people to follow Jesus because

  710. you'll share your story You'll testify

  711. to it and they'll say "This is real."

  712. And at some point somebody might

  713. actually ask you the question "I want to

  714. follow Jesus What do I

  715. do?" What if somebody asked you that

  716. today What would you do What would you

  717. say

  718. Do you feel equipped to answer that

  719. question

  720. Anyone It it that is a little bit

  721. intimidating isn't it You'd like I I

  722. call Pastor

  723. Drew Hey this this person wants to

  724. follow like how do they actually respond

  725. to the cross of

  726. Christ Like what do we do And I I my

  727. hope

  728. is

  729. church that as you

  730. grow as a pastor of 20 years the vast

  731. majority of the people that sat under my

  732. pastorship lacked the confidence to lead

  733. somebody to Jesus That they the extent

  734. of their faith of inviting somebody to

  735. follow Jesus was inviting them to church

  736. And I love that as a starting point but

  737. I want you to realize that God wants you

  738. to entrust you with the purpose of

  739. inviting and calling people to follow

  740. Jesus And so I'm going to read a couple

  741. of things And I want to show you the

  742. biblical response Check out Romans

  743. 10 says this If you declare with your

  744. mouth Jesus is Lord and believe in your

  745. heart that God raised him from the dead

  746. you will be saved For it is with your

  747. heart that you believe and are justified

  748. and it's with your mouth that you

  749. profess your faith and are saved And as

  750. scripture says anyone who believes in

  751. him will never be put to shame For there

  752. is no difference between Jew and Gentile

  753. The same Lord is Lord of all and richly

  754. blesses all who call on him For everyone

  755. who calls on the name of the Lord will

  756. be saved Now check this out How can they

  757. then call on the one they have not

  758. believed in And how can they believe in

  759. the one of whom they have not heard And

  760. how can they hear without someone

  761. preaching to them And how can anyone

  762. preach unless they are sent Is it as it

  763. is written how beautiful are the feet of

  764. those who bring good news And God is

  765. sending you And he's saying I want you

  766. to be people that don't just live worthy

  767. of the calling but you start to speak

  768. and be the voice of God in people's

  769. lives Can I get the salvation line up

  770. there I love this line because we get so

  771. hung up on like when is somebody saved

  772. And I want to suggest to you that Jesus

  773. wasn't calling us to salvation He was

  774. calling us to disciplehip in his kingdom

  775. That that Jesus wanted to seek and save

  776. the lost but not for the sake of

  777. salvation It was so that you could be

  778. united with him forever in heaven Right

  779. It's about so much

  780. more than just getting saved

  781. And so salvation we like to nail it down

  782. to a

  783. point in our culture I I I would I want

  784. to nail it down to disciplehip and maybe

  785. step away from that fixed point and say

  786. guys every time in the scripture when

  787. people

  788. believe and follow Jesus there's really

  789. five things that happen almost

  790. simultaneously

  791. The first is they

  792. believe They believe in Jesus Not just

  793. like ah Jesus is real Like no Jesus

  794. actually died on the cross for my sins

  795. and God raised him from the dead and he

  796. is who he said he is And so I have to do

  797. some I have to respond to that And so I

  798. choose to confess him as Lord and repent

  799. of my sins And and really as you are

  800. walking in life to follow Jesus means

  801. that at some point you he changes your

  802. heart in a way that you go I don't want

  803. to walk towards hell and live for myself

  804. I want to now repent of my sins and

  805. start living for him And so I'm going to

  806. start pursuing him I'm going to start

  807. following him I am going to become

  808. obedient to

  809. him And and for some reason we take

  810. communion which is one of these the

  811. sacraments where we remember the

  812. sacrifice of Jesus The other thing that

  813. Jesus

  814. prescribed for people to do as part of

  815. their surrendering was to be united with

  816. Christ into his death burial and

  817. resurrection through baptism

  818. It's just a a part of the process that

  819. how do you turn you you believe in Jesus

  820. You confess him as Lord You repent of

  821. your sins You unite with him in baptism

  822. And then you live in

  823. obedience because you now have a deposit

  824. guaranteeing your inheritance for

  825. salvation And you live following after

  826. him And so if somebody comes to you and

  827. says "How do you follow Jesus?" You say

  828. "Well what do you think about you What

  829. do you believe about him?" And if they

  830. believe that Jesus died on the cross for

  831. their sins and God raised him from the

  832. dead and that he is who he says he is

  833. then you could say "Then you just need

  834. to repent of your sins confess him as

  835. Lord and I you should step into baptism

  836. so you can see what it's like to

  837. identify with the death burial and

  838. resurrection of Jesus And then I am

  839. going to help you walk in obedience."

  840. that I hope is your response And I I

  841. want to read a passage of scripture to

  842. you because it's u I love the same guy

  843. who wrote Romans 10 that you're saved if

  844. you believe and you confess wrote this

  845. in Philippians 2 Therefore my dear

  846. friends as you have always obeyed not

  847. only in my presence but now much more in

  848. my absence continue to work out your

  849. salvation with fear and trembling

  850. For it is God who works in you to will

  851. and to act in order to fulfill his good

  852. purpose And that passage has kind of

  853. always freaked me out Work out my

  854. salvation I'm not saved through work

  855. because I can never do enough to save

  856. myself But Jesus is working in me

  857. And that sounds a whole lot like if you

  858. deny

  859. yourself take up your cross daily and

  860. follow me you can be my

  861. disciple That's what Philippians 2 looks

  862. like It's saying "Hey once you step in

  863. now it is time to deny yourself take up

  864. your cross and follow me." And for some

  865. in this room you've done that But there

  866. are I'm certain there are people in this

  867. room who have not repented of their sins

  868. who who have looked at uh the cross of

  869. Christ and said "This is amazing I'm

  870. interested but I don't know if I'm ready

  871. yet to make that commitment." And so

  872. this

  873. morning I want to challenge you to live

  874. worthy of your story And if you have not

  875. started that journey or that Jesus is in

  876. the middle of snatching you from the

  877. flames of hell to bring you into his

  878. kingdom I want to encourage you I'm

  879. going to pray and then I think Drew are

  880. we going to have you come up or are you

  881. going to go Okay Drew will come up and

  882. and I want to encourage you to engage in

  883. that because God wants to write an

  884. incredible story in your life of hope

  885. and of joy and of peace in his kingdom

  886. God you are good Thank you for saving us

  887. We didn't deserve it We can't earn it

  888. but you've called us to

  889. it And so God would you help us to live

  890. as we submit to you and we go to take up

  891. our cross I pray that it wouldn't be us

  892. doing it on our own accord but that you

  893. through the power of your spirit would

  894. enable it in

  895. us That you would transform us in Jesus

  896. name

  897. Amen Can we stand

  898. up This is a moment I want to give a

  899. moment of an opportunity to

  900. respond a chance for us to

  901. because that was an incredible sermon

  902. but the greatest sermon of all time

  903. doesn't hold doesn't doesn't do anything

  904. if we do nothing

  905. I've got to

  906. respond to my faith I got to respond to

  907. what God is doing what he is stirring

  908. And this is your moment And I want to

  909. give you guys that opportunity right

  910. here to look at uh one maybe it's just

  911. taking these notes of like how do I how

  912. how confidently can I actually lead

  913. someone into confess of your believe in

  914. Jesus Confess of your sins Repent of

  915. your ways Turn of your ways Turn towards

  916. him Be baptized into the death burial

  917. and resurrection of Christ and then live

  918. a life worthy of that calling And and

  919. some of that may even be I want to

  920. challenge us We've got Can we get our

  921. our challenges that we have for this

  922. series we've said we want you guys to

  923. pray with your pray for your one Then we

  924. want you guys to love your one Then we

  925. want you guys to just listen Ask

  926. stories Just ask for them to hear I I

  927. want to hear your story and then look at

  928. the moments for you to be able to share

  929. your story and to be able to share the

  930. gospel So share with your one your

  931. testimony Some of you guys took up that

  932. challenge and and and now this week I

  933. want you to I want you to go to that

  934. same person and say "Hey they they they

  935. said "I got to I now I got to share

  936. these things with you and and like this

  937. is this is what it looks like Can you

  938. just pretend that you're like interested

  939. in Jesus for a second?" like I'm trying

  940. to I'm trying to if if I was to walk

  941. someone through this would that make

  942. sense to you So I want to give that as

  943. as one of these

  944. challenges Walking someone into what

  945. does it look like to

  946. actually actually turn from our old

  947. ways And then what I want to do right

  948. here there's an opportunity right now

  949. And if you fall in one of these five

  950. convictions where you go I am choosing

  951. right now I'm gonna believe in

  952. Jesus I'm gonna believe in him for the

  953. first time Not just that he existed as a

  954. historical person That is that that that

  955. is just true There there's not very many

  956. people that deny that and and those who

  957. do are pretty ignorant There there's but

  958. it's a believing in him as the son of

  959. God as the Messiah and that he died

  960. buried and was resurrected again for the

  961. sake of our sins to have salvation and

  962. to have this beautiful eternal life with

  963. Christ and with with the father And then

  964. so I I believe if that's

  965. you maybe you are in the category of I

  966. I'm I got to

  967. confess I got to confess to maybe

  968. someone in this room or I'm going to

  969. just confess I'm just going to start and

  970. I'm going to confess to the Lord some

  971. mess some sin some dirt some sinfulness

  972. that I know I've got in my life that I

  973. need to confess I need to get this off

  974. And confession oh guys it's so much more

  975. powerful than just speaking something Oh

  976. it releases the power that it has over

  977. you And then you can repent Maybe you're

  978. going "Hey I've confessed it I've

  979. admitted it but I need help with this

  980. repentance thing I need to turn and I

  981. need to start following Christ and I'm

  982. just going to that's my new focus." And

  983. maybe maybe it is I need to get baptized

  984. And I don't know if you can find the

  985. baptism slide but we've actually got

  986. baptisms in like five weeks We're going

  987. to be doing baptisms And I want to

  988. invite you if you've never been baptized

  989. as an adult to make a decision and say

  990. "I'm going to meet Christ in the death

  991. burial and resurrection and I'm going to

  992. I'm going to obey in that." But if

  993. you've got in and and then five number

  994. five live in obedience Live a life

  995. worthy of the calling and the story that

  996. God has for you If you're in any of

  997. those

  998. categories I want to invite you to come

  999. down If we can have our prayer team as

1000. well come and our prayer team can meet

1001. you prayer team come And if you are in

1002. that category go ahead and come on down

1003. as well If you say "I need to either

1004. confess I need to repent I need to live

  1005. in obedience I need to uh I I I I need

1006. to be baptized and I need to figure out

1007. what that response is." Go ahead Come on

1008. forward I see you guys Come on You're

1009. not alone You're not alone And if you

1010. know that the person next to you that

1011. God's doing something in their heart and

1012. you need to grab their hand and walk

1013. forward with them go ahead and walk

1014. forward with them But this is the

1015. opportunity to take some boldness and to

1016. take some faithful steps towards him And

1017. big things are happening here guys Come

1018. on As you respond come on Can we give a

1019. hand Can we give a hand to what God's

1020. doing in this room We got people
