  1. The Lord is my

  2. shall not

  3. lead me by

  4. my fears are gone. Though I walk through

  5. the valley

  6. of the shadow of death, I know you are

  7. with me, my father,

  8. my friend.

  9. Your goodness and mercy

  10. will follow me all of my days.

  11. I know by yourers

  12. I'm safe.

  13. Amen. Come on. Who's glad to be here

  14. today?

  15. Oh man, what an incredible I just I I

  16. love what God's doing already here. Uh,

  17. I I believe I just I believe that

  18. there's steps of faith that the Lord has

  19. that he is offering in this room. I

  20. think we see that through the worship. I

  21. think we see that through the word that

  22. that Taylor gave. I love I love I hate

  23. but I love getting placed in a po in in

  24. a position where I go, "God, if you

  25. don't show up, I don't know how this is

  26. going to happen." because he always

  27. shows up in just incredible incredible

  28. ways. And uh we we've been we just had

  29. if you're on our team, if you serve on a

  30. team here, can I hear from you real

  31. quick? Let me hear it. Let's go. We just

  32. had a team night on uh on Friday. Here

  33. we go. And this is our events team that

  34. put it on and designed it all. Can we

  35. get a hand for our events team?

  36. We had a blast getting to highlight and

  37. celebrate all the things that God is

  38. doing and how he is using the multi the

  39. collective of everybody's efforts to be

  40. able to bring about a divine result. We

  41. talked about how we are changing

  42. eternity together. But we're in this

  43. series called the good shepherd and

  44. we're going through Psalm 23

  45. uh as we are as we're preparing for

  46. Easter. And I don't want us to forget as

  47. we're preparing for Easter, I don't want

  48. us to forget the the way that I believe

  49. when you look at how Jesus prepares and

  50. as how how he begins to prepare for what

  51. he knows is coming on the crucifixion

  52. and he begins this journey heading down

  53. to Jerusalem from Galilee. He gets the

  54. mount of transfiguration and then he

  55. begins to head down through uh to to

  56. Jerusalem and it's this beautiful

  57. journey. But what I see is that more

  58. than anything else, more than more than

  59. kick fasting, he does fast. More than

  60. praying, he does pray. But the thing

  61. that I find that marks him most on his

  62. journey is his mission. that he's

  63. incredibly on mission and you see the

  64. every conversation and he stirs up these

  65. these moments with people and we see

  66. that and I want to partner I want to

  67. prepare for Easter in the same way

  68. that's why we have our love into the

  69. light keychain challenge and if you

  70. haven't jumped into it we are three

  71. weeks away this is a perfect opportunity

  72. our love to the light keychain challenge

  73. is our challenge for us to find someone

  74. one person that I will pray for every

  75. single day that they are far from the

  76. Lord but close to me and that my I would

  77. grow in the Lord's heart for this

  78. person. Can we get the the love in the

  79. light challenge uh keychain challenge

  80. slide up? We got find someone who I can

  81. pray for every single day who I can love

  82. them intentionally. I am intentionally

  83. givingever to them. I'm being

  84. sacrificial. whatever it may be. I'm

  85. buying them lunch. I'm buying them

  86. coffee. And whatever it may be, I'm just

  87. intentionally trying to love them and

  88. then I can share my story. We got a few

  89. weeks left to share your God's story

  90. with them. Hey, my pastor said that I

  91. had to do this before Easter. Uh would

  92. you mind if I share a little bit about

  93. just what God's done in my life? And you

  94. don't have to agree with it or anything.

  95. Just like he's making me stupid. is

  96. ridiculous. I can't believe he's doing

  97. this. Right? You can totally blame me.

  98. But what I want for these people, I want

  99. for our ones to find to to just

  100. experience the deep deep love that Jesus

  101. has for them

  102. that can only be truly seen in certain

  103. aspects through the body of Christ,

  104. through his ambassadors.

  105. And it is an honor because every single

  106. one of us were someone's one at one

  107. point.

  108. every single one of us are standing in

  109. the place that we stand because of the

  110. prayers of someone else. So I want to

  111. invite us to see that same mission that

  112. we see in the life of Jesus as we

  113. prepare and then our goal is to have

  114. everybody walk in with a friend with

  115. someone who is in need of the message of

  116. Jesus which is all of us right but to to

  117. walk in on Easter Sunday with a friend

  118. that we can share in this testimony

  119. together. when we do that. And if you

  120. got questions on this, uh it was like

  121. three weeks ago I shared a message that

  122. got dives in deeper. You can go on to

  123. collective omaha.comwatch

  124. and see the love into the light message

  125. there. But we're going to dive in

  126. because we got a ton. I just I feel so

  127. much faith for this service today, for

  128. this message. Uh, if you guys can open

  129. up, if you want to open up in your

  130. Bibles, if you guys got your own Psalm

  131. 23 memorization challenge, and then

  132. let's stand up. As we're beginning every

  133. single Sunday, every single message in

  134. this series, we are going to stand. We

  135. are going to read the word of God

  136. together. And uh, we as as we work on

  137. memorizing

  138. Psalm 23 together. Okay. So, let's pray.

  139. Let's read this together. The Lord is my

  140. shepherd. I shall not want. He makes me

  141. lie down in green pastures. He leads me

  142. beside still waters. He restores my

  143. soul. He leads me in paths of

  144. righteousness for his name's sake. Even

  145. though I walk through the valley of the

  146. shadow of death, I will fear no evil,

  147. for you are with me. Your rod and your

  148. staff, they comfort me. You prepare a

  149. table before me. In the presence of my

  150. enemies, you anoint my head with oil. My

  151. cup overflows.

  152. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow

  153. me all the days of my life, and I shall

  154. dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

  155. Amen. Amen. Come on, you can be seated.

  156. The Lord is good. He's got good things.

  157. We've talked about this uh this series.

  158. We've talked about God is the good

  159. shepherd and we are the not so great

  160. sheep, right? Anybody relate to that? A

  161. couple weeks ago, we talked about how

  162. sheep to to be compared to a sheep is

  163. not a compliment. Uh sheep are not

  164. particularly smart. They are certainly

  165. not self- sustaining. They are in

  166. desperate need of a leader to be able to

  167. lead them or they will die and or kill

  168. themselves. It is terrible. And so, but

  169. last week we talked about how when we

  170. follow the leading of the good shepherd,

  171. we experience green pastures and still

  172. waters. And there's incredible blessing

  173. in the presence of the Lord. Who can

  174. attest to that? Seeing the blessing that

  175. comes from following the Lord. Come on,

  176. we got some witnesses in here. I love

  177. it. And so it's so great to hear that

  178. when I follow Jesus, life is so easy.

  179. Nothing but green pastures and still

  180. waters.

  181. That cry right there. Yes, you got it. I

  182. don't know whose baby that was, but that

  183. was on Q. That is Yeah, thank you. There

  184. you go. We got Santi coming over here.

  185. Let's go. Making a show here. So here

  186. here's the here here's the whole idea

  187. though I believe that the great that

  188. that how you can describe life walking

  189. with the good shepherd as full of green

  190. pastures and full of still waters. It is

  191. also marked by the some of the deepest

  192. darkest valleys because we are in a

  193. world that is depraved, that is broken,

  194. that is full of sin, that is full of

  195. death.

  196. And it does not the whole goal is not

  197. follow me and your life is easy. That's

  198. not what Jesus is saying. Otherwise, I'm

  199. not following him. I'm following

  200. comfort.

  201. And so we see today what we're going to

  202. be talking us about about is going

  203. through the valley

  204. where we begin in verses four and five

  205. and he leads me beside still waters and

  206. makes me lie down in green pastures.

  207. then leads into this. Even though I walk

  208. through the valley

  209. of the shadow

  210. of death,

  211. I will fear no evil for you are with me.

  212. Later verse five, it says right after

  213. this, it says, "You prepare a table

  214. before me in the presence of my

  215. enemies."

  216. These are these are the this is the I

  217. got to hold with both hands my walk with

  218. Christ. That some seasons are deeply

  219. difficult valley seasons,

  220. deeply dark night of the soul type of

  221. seasons that are so hard where I feel

  222. like I'm surrounded by enemies. Like I

  223. feel I'm surrounded by obstacles that I

  224. don't know how to get through. These are

  225. the hardest seasons. And here's the

  226. message I want us to walk through. I

  227. want us to understand that in these

  228. seasons, what this psalm attests to and

  229. what many of us in this room can attest

  230. to and I want all of us to be able to

  231. stand on is that the Lord's presence is

  232. our greatest hope in the hardest

  233. seasons.

  234. Sometimes

  235. when I hear this,

  236. when I go, I'm walking through the

  237. valley of the shadow of death.

  238. Someone responds with, "Oh, but God's

  239. with you."

  240. Sometimes it's like I think that what

  241. what are you saying? I just got like

  242. this this pillow to squeeze, right? Like

  243. as I'm like, "That doesn't help me. I

  244. don't What does that even mean? God is

  245. with me in this. How do I walk through

  246. this season? It's an incredibly Now, now

  247. this is the the amazing thing about this

  248. is if you look up this psalm, Psalm 23,

  249. it actually

  250. it reveals this this first thing that we

  251. find in the presence of God because

  252. there's special things not just not just

  253. that I'm not alone, though having by my

  254. side is infinitely insanely incredible.

  255. But he actually provides certain things

  256. as we walk through the deepest darkest

  257. valley. He actually gives us some

  258. things. And we see this first of all uh

  259. there's a there's a poetic term called a

  260. kayazm. If you're familiar with a

  261. kayazm, it it is a it's where the poem

  262. is kind of it peaks and then it returns

  263. and it ties into its previous statements

  264. that it has before. And it's this Psalm

  265. 23 is a kayazm. It's this it's this

  266. beautiful artistic guys. There's so much

  267. to dive into this. We're just scratching

  268. the surface of the depth of Psalm 23 for

  269. five weeks. We're just scratching the

  270. surface. This is one of those things

  271. that I wish we could dive into and talk

  272. about how the first point talks about

  273. God's dominion and satisfaction in him.

  274. Second is his blessing and his

  275. provision. Third is his peace and

  276. shalom. Fourth is his uh he leads me in

  277. paths of righteousness. That's his

  278. protection.

  279. Then we see even though I walk through

  280. the valley of the shadow of death, this

  281. is his divine comfort. And you see that

  282. correlated with your rod and your staff.

  283. say, "Comfort me." And then, but it

  284. peaks right here with this line. I will

  285. fear no evil, for you are with me.

  286. And what this means is that this is the

  287. climactic point in the poem. This is not

  288. one that continues to build up and has a

  289. big climactic point right at the very

  290. end and then summarizes it up with a

  291. period, right? Like this is this is it.

  292. This is the WHOLE POINT OF PSALM 23. I

  293. will fear no evil

  294. for you are with me.

  295. This is one of the most just

  296. extraordinary

  297. revelations that we can have and we're

  298. going to a lot of what we're talking

  299. about is actually going to feed into

  300. this. But this is also reveals the very

  301. first thing that we see when we find in

  302. the hardest seasons God's presence

  303. provides a few things. The first thing

  304. is God's presence provides a freedom

  305. from fear. He removes all fear.

  306. The presence of the shepherd.

  307. We talked about this a little bit last

  308. week. How sheep won't lie down

  309. unless they have all these discomforts,

  310. all these fears, all these issues

  311. relieved.

  312. And sometimes the most timid sheep will

  313. never lie down unless they are within

  314. their gate or

  315. near the shepherd.

  316. The shepherd, the presence of the

  317. shepherd removes

  318. all fear because I know if there's

  319. something that I don't see, the shepherd

  320. sees it. And he's got me. He's with me.

  321. He's led me to great places before. and

  322. he's going to continue to guide me in

  323. this season as well. When we're talking

  324. about the this whole idea of that God's

  325. presence in the deep valley seasons that

  326. God is with us and therefore I have no

  327. fear

  328. because I know that there's something on

  329. the other side of the valley. Amen.

  330. because I've seen him lead me before.

  331. Maybe you haven't. If you're young and

  332. you're walking through some of your

  333. first hard seasons, this is the season

  334. that you get to discover for some of the

  335. first times how God walks you through

  336. the valleys. Not just in the valley, but

  337. through it. And you'll see his

  338. faithfulness. This is why what we're

  339. actually going to be talking In a couple

  340. weeks for Easter, we're going to be

  341. talking about death defeated. And we've

  342. got this the the whole series. This is

  343. what we're it's it's that there is hope

  344. past the hopelessness.

  345. There is light past the darkness. There

  346. is a victory that happens even after the

  347. greatest defeat of death comes. And what

  348. does it look like to stand on the other

  349. side of the valley? Is a big is is a

  350. comparable way to be able to describe

  351. what we're talking about in this series.

  352. So, I want to encourage you guys if you

  353. know of anybody that's like, man, they

  354. could use this that they could see

  355. where's the hope in their situation,

  356. where's the hope in the plan that God

  357. has for them, this is a season, this is

  358. this Easter series is going to be

  359. powerful and deeply impactful, I

  360. believe, for many, many people. And I

  361. believe that there's people in your life

  362. that need this

  363. and that they may not even be your one,

  364. but you may be the person that gives

  365. them the hope of the invitation into

  366. something that that extends beyond their

  367. current season and their current

  368. reality.

  369. So this is so when when we talk about

  370. fear in the valley, the valley is it

  371. it's this incredibly difficult place. In

  372. fact, the word valley uh the Hebrew word

  373. for this is it's not if we can get a

  374. little nerdy. It's not just this like uh

  375. can we can we pull up the title slide

  376. the the through the valley slide. It's

  377. it actually this is a valley but the

  378. specific Hebrew word for this is not

  379. something like this that's like this

  380. lush let's set up towns in this

  381. beautiful mountainous valley area but it

  382. looks can we get the other valley

  383. picture? This is actually a more

  384. accurate picture of what this valley,

  385. this deep chasm, ravine, thin, dark,

  386. shadowy, full of caves on all sides.

  387. Valley.

  388. It this is the type of valley. The

  389. specific word that it's referring to is

  390. a is one that has dangers all around.

  391. There are the the the types of fears and

  392. problems are are uh like you got caves,

  393. you got bandits, you got cougars, you

  394. got all this stuff. But here's the

  395. reality is that I don't have to fear any

  396. of it.

  397. Absolutely any of it.

  398. Because I know the shepherd

  399. is with me.

  400. I want to I want to get deeper into this

  401. in in just a little bit, but

  402. but it's kind of like when I'm with my

  403. kids

  404. and suddenly something

  405. scary happens. A dog's barking at them

  406. and they're not so sure what the intent

  407. of the dog is. Uh or I'm I'm out there

  408. swimming in a pool and they're nervous

  409. and they're like, I'm not sure. I don't

  410. want to go out to the deep end. I don't

  411. want to go. I I I'm nervous about what's

  412. happening. And as soon as I get near

  413. them or they will hide behind me or they

  414. will come up close to me, it's like

  415. suddenly the deep water's not scary

  416. anymore, right?

  417. Suddenly, my daughter is the most like

  418. this out of anybody. She she is so like

  419. frightened, AFRAID, SCARED. I CAN'T BE

  420. LEFT ALONE. BUT IF MORGAN and I are just

  421. near her, she is fearless. She is a

  422. feisty firecracker, right? Like she is

  423. ready to take on absolutely anything.

  424. But man, the second that she thinks that

  425. her mom or dad or that adult or a leader

  426. is not near her, it's incredibly

  427. frightening.

  428. She has this fearlessness that we get

  429. when we're with our good shepherd.

  430. That is the that's the type of

  431. fearlessness

  432. that you get when my kids jump off of a

  433. off of a a landing into the pool and

  434. they would never do that on their own,

  435. but their dad is waiting for them with

  436. open arms.

  437. It's this it's this beautiful place of

  438. going, man, when I recognize the

  439. presence of the shepherd, the fear just

  440. leaves. It begins to subside and

  441. disappear. So we see first of all, the

  442. first thing that the Lord does is his in

  443. in our hardest seasons, God's presence

  444. removes fear.

  445. Then the second is we see that he

  446. strengthens through the journey. His

  447. presence is more than just comfort. He

  448. actually strengthens. And this is this

  449. is that deep dark valley pit that is

  450. incredibly hard, incredibly difficult.

  451. But in our lives, I want us to

  452. understand what a valley season is.

  453. When King David says, "Even though I

  454. walk through the valley of the shadow of

  455. death," what he's not talking about is

  456. he's not talking about, "Oh, my boss, he

  457. just said this about I got this coworker

  458. that talks against me or uh you don't

  459. understand. I yesterday I stubbed my

  460. toe, broke my nail, had a flat tire, and

  461. ran out of gas on the way home, right?

  462. Like this is the valley season for me.

  463. No, that's not the valley season, right?

  464. That's a bad day. I'll give it to you.

  465. That's a hard day. That's no fun. The

  466. deep dark valley seasons are those

  467. seasons that you walk through the you go

  468. these cliffs these things around me are

  469. too high.

  470. They're too big. They're too much.

  471. I feel like if I get a glimpse of hope,

  472. can we pull up that valley picture? That

  473. deep valley picture. If I get a glimpse

  474. of hope, if I see the sun at all, it's

  475. like just for feels so short and then

  476. I'm stuck in the shadows again. and I'm

  477. stuck in the, "Oh man, I thought maybe

  478. that would work out and it didn't." It's

  479. the seasons of I just got that diagnosis

  480. that I never thought I would or again

  481. that I never thought I would have to

  482. deal with. It's the seasons

  483. of I've I have turmoil in my

  484. relationships and the ones closest to me

  485. and I don't know how to reconcile and

  486. make right to this and it it breaks me.

  487. It's the seasons of my marriage is

  488. falling apart or my marriage did fall

  489. apart and now I don't know what to do

  490. with myself. It's the seasons of deep

  491. depression. It's the seasons of I I have

  492. I have no clue how I'm going to make it

  493. and I have no clue how I made it last

  494. month. I have no clue how I'm going to

  495. make it this month. I have no

  496. financially I'm just I'm stuck. I'm

  497. strapped. I'm lost. I'm hope it's it's

  498. it's beyond me. It's this deep dark

  499. valley. And when I think about this,

  500. I think about I think about what David

  501. went through when he was writing, "Even

  502. though I walk through the valley of the

  503. shadow of death."

  504. See, he's a shepherd that gets

  505. valleys. He gets valley seasons. But

  506. this is why I believe that this this had

  507. to be read. This had to be written by

  508. David a little bit later in life. It may

  509. have been written by him when he was in

  510. the valley season

  511. when he was a shepherd boy.

  512. And then he gets anointed and gets a

  513. calling that he never asked for to

  514. become king. He begins to serve in the

  515. palace house. He served and he lived in

  516. his father's house and then he gets to

  517. serve in the king's house in the palace

  518. until the king goes, "You are now my

  519. enemy." And David who fought and

  520. conquered and risked his life for this

  521. king now is getting spears thrown at

  522. him. He has to run away. He who lived in

  523. his father's house in the king's house

  524. now lives in a cave with with a whole

  525. bunch of other people running because

  526. either they're running from convictions,

  527. they're running from debt collectors,

  528. they're running whatever it may be, they

  529. are no longer welcome in their hometown.

  530. And he's with all these misfits, all

  531. these problem makers, all these

  532. troublemakers. And this is where he

  533. finds himself in a place where

  534. everything is lost. The one person that

  535. the the worst person in the entire

  536. kingdom, to hate you, wants him dead and

  537. is literally hunting him.

  538. Even though I walk through the valley of

  539. the shadow of death, when I think about

  540. what the valley season looks like, I'll

  541. think about just last weekend, uh going

  542. to the funeral of my uncle, my favorite

  543. uncle, my dad's oldest brother. And when

  544. I think about the valley of the shadow

  545. of death, I think his what he went

  546. through is very similar to what what I

  547. look at is just unfair.

  548. He is he was a professor at Nebraska

  549. Christian College. Before that, he was a

  550. professor at UNL who's voted multiple

  551. times to be the student's favorite

  552. professor. He taught English. He he was

  553. a deep uh deep thinker. He was a deep

  554. writer. He w and and he was a deeply

  555. inspired evangelist. Everybody he talked

  556. to, he had to share about this

  557. incredible joy and hope and love that he

  558. found. He would hike, he would run, he

  559. would he would hike 14,000 foot

  560. mountains. Not even joking. He'd hit

  561. that peak probably 20 times a year. He

  562. is just in it. He's one of the most

  563. physically fit people I've ever met. He

  564. would He runs minimum seven miles a day.

  565. He is and just extraordinary. And then

  566. he gets diagnosed with throat cancer

  567. after not having smoking a day in his

  568. life.

  569. And what it does is at first they say,

  570. "Hey, what we're going to have to do is

  571. we're going to have to we're gonna have

  572. to do partial partial removing of your

  573. vocal cords."

  574. He's a preacher at a small town for 24

  575. years in Iowa of a small church that

  576. ranged at its biggest about 40

  577. to about five people

  578. in this range. And he would preach

  579. faithfully. And one of the first things

  580. that this cancer did is it removed his

  581. ability to project.

  582. And he's stuck. this whisper and he

  583. can't talk,

  584. but he keeps on going. You would not

  585. believe it. In this picture at the

  586. right, you may not be able to see that

  587. he's actually got in his throat the the

  588. laryangetomy and he's he's at the top of

  589. a mountain and they say, "You probably

  590. won't be able to go for long walks, let

  591. alone runs." And here he is at the top

  592. of a mountain saying, "I'm it's not

  593. going to stop me." He's this incredible

  594. fighter. As it continues to go, it then

  595. takes away his energy and he's not able

  596. to run. It then takes away his uh his

  597. his his disciplehip and he's not able to

  598. communicate at all. And he meets with

  599. all these people and he and he knows

  600. that this is a disease. This is a cancer

  601. that he is just trying to slow. He knows

  602. where it's going. He knows exactly where

  603. he and and never once I ever talked with

  604. him, that I ever prayed with him. Never

  605. once did he not carry this joy like he's

  606. ready to shout

  607. and he could barely speak. Many times he

  608. can't. He just and he writes like this

  609. with excitement and then he'd go home

  610. and he'd sleep for 23 hours a day. And

  611. he's going through this valley of this

  612. shadow of death. And I don't know how he

  613. does it. I do not believe that I carried

  614. the strength within me that he carried

  615. in this way. And he has everything being

  616. stripped, ALL THE GOOD THINGS being

  617. stripped away from him.

  618. And he still carries this joy, still

  619. carries this strength

  620. even though he walks through the valley

  621. of the shadow that is leading directly

  622. towards death.

  623. And modeled this in a way

  624. that I don't even know if I can strive

  625. to

  626. just in an incredibly

  627. humble,

  628. joyfilled way, the spirit strengthened

  629. him.

  630. See, I find that the the hard times a

  631. lot of times we think, man, my season is

  632. really hard. Where's God?

  633. And we ask these questions and the

  634. reality is that hard times don't mean

  635. God's absence. They unlock his presence.

  636. It wasn't until he had all these he

  637. says, "I feel like a robot. I'm just

  638. stuck with all this stuff. I've got I

  639. got ports. I got I got stuff in my my

  640. for my feeding tube. I got stuff in my

  641. throat. I got like all this stuff going

  642. on. I'm always hooked up to something."

  643. And it wasn't until that season that he

  644. began this practice of 40 days in the

  645. wilderness straight just spending time

  646. with the Lord.

  647. See, there's an unlocking of the

  648. presence of God that happens. In fact,

  649. this is why Psalm 34:18 says, "The Lord

    Psalms 34:18

  650. is near. He is most near to the

  651. brokenhearted.

  652. His

  653. presence is so much more real

  654. when I'm in the hardest season. Some of

  655. the closest times I've ever felt with

  656. the Lord are not in the pinnacle moments

  657. when everything's going right and the

  658. worship's hitting just right. Oh, I love

  659. it. I love when that's happening. But

  660. some of the times when I needed his

  661. presence the most is when I felt it the

  662. most. The times and for a year and a

  663. half of depression and suicidal thoughts

  664. and And I'm I'm laying I remember laying

  665. in the middle of this nowhere and just

  666. stuck in the snow and screaming at God.

  667. And I didn't hear anything,

  668. but he was there.

  669. There's the times where I I I feel a

  670. level of rejection and fear and attack

  671. and he whispers to me, "I've been in

  672. this pit with you.

  673. I've been deeper in this than you yet

  674. are, and I will walk you out of this

  675. valley, too. It's those seasons

  676. that I've never experienced the presence

  677. of God quite like it. People in

  678. persecuted countries, martyrs describe

  679. and they write in their journals about

  680. they almost crave

  681. the next time that they get beaten for

  682. their faith because

  683. there's never a more a more nearer time

  684. that they have with the Lord.

  685. It's this deep

  686. deep sense of his presence where he

  687. strengthens us. And then we see number

  688. three, he provides all peace and joy.

  689. And he just, this is, this is where it's

  690. crazy. It says, you prepare a table

  691. before me in the presence of my enemies.

  692. In the presence of my enemies. This is

  693. crazy. There's no there's no I've left

  694. the valley.

  695. In the valley,

  696. I dine with the Lord

  697. in the presence

  698. surrounded by opposition,

  699. surrounded by enemies, in the midst of

  700. your struggle, he has a blessing and a

  701. provision for you. In the midst of it,

  702. this is great because the thing I love

  703. about this, if we can pull up uh pro

  704. Psalm 23, four and five, if we can pull

  705. up that slide. The mil the amazing thing

  706. about this is that we don't see never do

  707. you ever see a coinciding with eating

  708. and fearfulness.

  709. When you ever see an animal if if you

  710. that that is chewing chomping on

  711. something and then it gets afraid. What

  712. does it do? First thing it does is drop

  713. it and then it runs. Never in my life

  714. have I ever been like, "Oh, I think

  715. someone's following me. I could really

  716. use a McRib right now." Never in my life

  717. have I done that. Never in my life have

  718. I been like, "Holy smokes, the doctor

  719. just said what? Let's go grab ourselves

  720. a chicken sandwich." Right? I don't.

  721. That's not what it is. Because the whole

  722. idea is I'm in this survival mode. I get

  723. caught in this place. And so if I am

  724. dining with the Lord and the presence of

  725. my enemies, do you know what level of

  726. fearlessness that takes? Do you know

  727. what level of It's not just a removal of

  728. fear. It's a presence of joy. It's a

  729. presence of peace. It's a place where

  730. I'm like I'm sitting here and I'm eating

  731. and I'm like waving to those who are

  732. trying to attack me over there. I don't

  733. LIKE YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND. DO YOU KNOW

  734. WHO'S WITH ME AT this table? Do you know

  735. who backs me up? Do you know who goes

  736. before me? Do you know who led me into

  737. this valley and is going to walk me

  738. right out of this valley? I don't have

  739. anything to fear.

  740. is this place of peace and of joy. And I

  741. I can't even I can't even describe how

  742. good it is that the presence of God,

  743. what he brings in these hard times. You

  744. prepare a table before me in the

  745. presence of my enemies.

  746. And then we see

  747. we see lastly it said that that in the

  748. hardest seasons God's presence removes

  749. fear strengthens us provides peace and

  750. joy and saves us. Remember

  751. this says

  752. yay though I walk through the valley of

  753. the shadow of death. The hardest,

  754. darkest seasons are never forever.

  755. Even for Uncle Bob, Dr. Bob,

  756. his His season did not end in defeat.

  757. Our seasons are about walking through

  758. these valleys. God. Here, here's one of

  759. the most

  760. it's difficult theology

  761. to believe that God heals, to believe

  762. that God saves, to believe that God

  763. rescues. Because I'll tell you, it's a

  764. lot easier. It's so much easier to just

  765. say, "He doesn't do that anymore." That

  766. was kind of his thing in in when Jesus

  767. was walking around and to initiate his

  768. church. It was a lot that was kind of

  769. what he did back then. He doesn't really

  770. do that anymore. Don't hope for it.

  771. Don't wait. Just like let him strengthen

  772. you. But here's the crazy thing. I live

  773. I have I I have I I live with the

  774. blessing of carrying my daughter because

  775. of the miracles of Christ. I live with

  776. the blessing of my own life because of

  777. the miracles of Christ. There are those

  778. in this room that are only here that

  779. your heart is beating only because of

  780. the miracles of Christ. He does rescue

  781. us. And I will cling to that and I will

  782. ask for that AND I WILL SAY LORD PLEASE

  783. SAVE ME DIVINELY rescue me out of this

  784. deep dark valley. And I believe I

  785. believe counseling is so important. I

  786. believe that that therapy is so

  787. valuable. I believe all this stuff. BUT

  788. MAN, SOMETIMES A couple minutes of deep

  789. prayer with the Lord can absolutely

  790. change it all. I I believe this in the

  791. deepest part of my being because I've

  792. seen it. I've experienced this. He saves

  793. us.

  794. So what that means

  795. is my revelation of his salvation

  796. only comes within the context of the

  797. dark valleys.

  798. Salvation means to save.

  799. I have no idea of what salvation means

  800. if I don't have an idea of what it means

  801. to be in desperate need of being saved,

  802. of being lost, of being stuck in a place

  803. that's beyond me, that's bigger than me,

  804. that I can't get out of on my own. This

  805. is why we cannot view, do not mistake

  806. hard seasons for bad seasons.

  807. Romans 8:28 says, "We know that in all

    Romans 8:28

  808. things, God works for the good of those

  809. who love him, who have been called

  810. according to his purpose."

  811. This is what I want us to know as we

  812. stand up in here. I want us to stand up,

  813. stand in faith, stand on the Lord.

  814. Here's what I want us to know. Salvation

  815. is not found only once you've got out of

  816. the valley. Salvation is not provision

  817. isn't given only on the mountain top.

  818. It's right where you are.

  819. It's right where you are. In fact, if

  820. you look at the at a picture of a

  821. valley, can we pull that up one more

  822. time? The deep valley, the deep ravine,

  823. where is the life in this picture?

  824. We see it. The only green you can see is

  825. right at the base. Things don't grow on

  826. the mountain tops.

  827. We grow in the valley seasons. We get to

  828. know the Lord in the valley seasons. We

  829. love the mountain peaks, but that's not

  830. where I find I'm growing. And so after

  831. that, he may be leading me through

  832. another valley, another hard thing. It's

  833. crazy because shepherds would do this

  834. every single year. They'd take their

  835. flock out of the pasture that they're

  836. used to and they'd say, "We're going to

  837. walk up in the heat of the summer. We're

  838. going to begin to so that we avoid that

  839. with all your thick wool. We're going to

  840. walk up." And for weeks,

  841. sometimes months on end, they would walk

  842. up into these mountainous areas where

  843. it's full of fresh, lush pastures.

  844. But the only way you get to the mountain

  845. top is not by climbing the cliffs. You

  846. must walk through the valleys. The

  847. valleys are the path that leads you

  848. right there if you want to get there.

  849. There's no mountain without a valley.

  850. There's no mountaintop experience

  851. without a valley. There's no salvation

  852. without a need to be saved. We must walk

  853. through the valley. at CNN at the

  854. conference Tay was just talking about.

  855. I'm gonna steal the line from JJ and and

  856. tweak it a little bit for this. It's not

  857. in the valley. It's not first the valley

  858. then the promise. It's in the valley

  859. there is the promise. In the valley and

  860. the promise and I can live on that right

  861. here. There is a sustenance that he

  862. wants to give you. You may say, "But I'm

  863. surrounded by my enemies. You don't

  864. understand. hard it is. You didn't

  865. understand this valley season that I'm

  866. in. Even though I walk through the

  867. valley of the shadow of death, I fear no

  868. evil. You've prepared a table before me.

  869. You have a banquet in front of me. Even

  870. though I'm surrounded by my enemies,

  871. this is where I'm going to stand. Can we

  872. pull up I want to pull up the kayasm one

  873. more time. The poem. If you are a

  874. grammar, if you're a grammar geek, this

  875. poem, this song may bother you,

  876. but if you notice, it's very intentional

  877. because it speaks in two different

  878. persons.

  879. He makes me lie down.

  880. He over there restores my soul. He over

  881. there leads me in paths of righteousness

  882. for his name's sake. At the peak of it,

  883. we shift into the first person. I get to

  884. know Christ in the valley season. Even

  885. though I walk through the valley, I know

  886. you are with me. And then it begins to

  887. transition. NOW I KNOW THE LORD. I FEAR

  888. no evil because he it's not just this

  889. aloof creator that I got to heard about

  890. hear about my whole LIFE GROWING UP. NOW

  891. I KNOW YOU and I speak with you. And

  892. it's this deep intimate relationship

  893. that only comes because I walked through

  894. the valley of the shadow of death and

  895. found out that that is exactly where he

  896. was found.

  897. That is exactly where I find him.

  898. This is why Psalm 27:1 David writes

    Psalms 27:1

  899. later in a different poem. He says, "The

  900. Lord is my light and my salvation. Who

  901. should I fear?

  902. The Lord is the stronghold of my life.

  903. Who should I be afraid of?

  904. See, the presence of the shepherd

  905. completely removes all fear.

  906. And I want to take this second here

  907. because it's in the valley that we that

  908. we meet Jesus. Jesus himself walked

  909. through the valley. In fact, if you look

  910. at

  911. a map

  912. of where Jesus was on the night that he

  913. was betrayed, and he's on this mountain,

  914. Mount of Olives in what's called the

  915. Garden of Gethsemane. And what he he got

  916. arrested and you'll never guess where

  917. they led him through a valley.

  918. They led him through the kindred valley

  919. and that became their pathway to lead

  920. him to his trials

  921. into his crucifixion.

  922. Jesus knows the valley.

  923. Jesus is in the valley. He's deeper in

  924. the pit than you've ever been. And

  925. that's not comparison thing. That's a

  926. freeing thing. He says, "I will walk you

  927. out of this valley.

  928. There is a hope and a salvation found

  929. even in the valley."

  930. So what I want to ask I want to ask

  931. right here I just I believe that if

  932. we're going to be a part of have real

  933. connection with God real relationship

  934. with others and real impact in the world

  935. and it's going to take some real people

  936. which demands authenticity

  937. and vulnerability

  938. and so that means what how how we

  939. express that here is I want to offer an

  940. opportunity right now

  941. whether you feel like you're walking

  942. through the darkest valley or the

  943. easiest or or you're like, "Ah, it's not

  944. that it feels hard for me, but it's

  945. probably not that hard. It's not it's

  946. not your uncle's story. It's not the

  947. story that I heard over here." But you

  948. may say, "This is this is a valley." If

  949. you're walking in a valley season, could

  950. could I just have you throw your hand up

  951. real quick? Come on, I see it. Come on,

  952. keep your hand up. Keep your hand up.

  953. You're not alone. Come on. I see it. I

  954. see you. You're not alone. Can we our

  955. prayer team. Keep them up. Keep them up.

  956. Prayer team, can we start and get our

  957. leaders? If you're a team lead or a

  958. point person, can you gather around some

  959. of these people? And I want to make sure

  960. that we can get people praying over. You

  961. are not alone. Keep your hand up. Keep

  962. your hand up. This is vulnerability.

  963. This is where victory comes. This is

  964. where it comes. Come on, everybody.

  965. Gather around. Yes. Come on. Keep it

  966. going. And then if you're around them

  967. and you got a prayer to lead all the way

  968. over there, you can put a hand on their

  969. shoulder. You can pray for them. I want

  970. to encourage you. And I want to pray

  971. right now that we would see, can we get

  972. the four points up right now? I want to

  973. pray, begin to pray these things that

  974. God's presence would be felt, that we

  975. would see that all fear is removed in

  976. the mighty name of Jesus. We I believe

  977. that in this valley, Lord, you will

  978. remove fear. It is not the end. It is

  979. not hopeless. It is not a broken

  980. situation. Lord, it's an opportunity for

  981. your restoration in the mighty name of

  982. Jesus. Lord, I pray for those who are

  983. walking

  984. in a place that they cannot walk

  985. themselves. It is too big. It is too

  986. hard. Would you strengthen? Would their

  987. weakness become your strength? Father

  988. God, I pray that in this place as they

  989. are surrounded by enemies, as they're

  990. surrounded by fear, Lord, would they

  991. find peace? Would they find joy? Would

  992. they find sustenance? Would they find

  993. that you have already prepared a

  994. blessing for them right there? Father

  995. God, I do pray. I pray, Father God,

  996. would you save? I I declare miracles in

  997. this place right now. I declare miracles

  998. in this place, Lord. I pray that there

  999. would be a divine healing hand in this

1000. room. Lord, break off depression. Break

1001. off sickness. There is no cancer that is

1002. greater than your name. And so we

1003. declare the name of Jesus over here over

  1004. the diagnosis,

1005. over the chronic issues, over the

1006. relationships that are broken. Lord, I

1007. pray would you save us? Would you bring

  1008. about a salvation and a healing and a

1009. divine revelation of your spirit?

1010. Holy Spirit, we ask for you. We ask for

1011. you to do what we cannot and walk us and

1012. lead us through this valley.

  1013. Hallelujah.

1014. Just keep praying. Just keep praying.

1015. Just keep praying. God's moving right

  1016. here. Keep it going.

1017. This is not a time to rush through.

1018. This is not a time

1019. to try to put walls up.

1020. This is a moment of brokenness. This is

1021. a moment of value. This is the moment of

1022. vulnerability. This is the moment when

  1023. God draws near

1024. to your broken heart. And I can't

1025. pretend that it's all put together and

1026. hope that I get that nearness. No, it's

1027. the cracks that he fills.

1028. Heavenly Father, I pray your presence

1029. over each person in this room. Heavenly

1030. Father, I pray your grace over every

  1031. valley season.

1032. Lord, that we may look ahead and we may

1033. see that this valley is not forever. We

1034. may look ahead and we may see that

  1035. you've got a mountain ahead, but you've

1036. got provision. You got blessing right

1037. here. You've got an answer right now.

1038. Mighty God, would you please? Would you

  1039. please

1040. I want to before we close out here, I

  1041. want to say

1042. I just want to take just a second here.

1043. There is R. Russ came up to me and I

1044. want to honor your guys' time. Uh, and

1045. so what I want to do is I want to

1046. provide an opportunity for you. Russ,

1047. the Lord put a word on his heart and

1048. it's this testimony of trusting God in

1049. the deeper waters. I believe that

1050. there's people in this room that that

1051. word is for. I believe that there's

1052. those of you in this room who God's

1053. saying, "Come on. I want you to go all

1054. in with me." Whether you're in the

1055. valley season or whether that doesn't

1056. even relate to where you're at right

1057. now. And he's saying, "Come. Come on.

1058. Don't just dip your toe in the water. Go

1059. all in." He's got a testimony. Russ has

1060. got a testimony for this. If that's you,

1061. would you meet Russ at the prayer

  1062. banner? Don't miss it. I believe he's

1063. got a blessing for a few people in this

1064. room that he's got through his

1065. testimony, through what God's worked in

1066. him. I believe his word is for some of

1067. you in this room. Find him over there as

1068. we get ready to praise the Lord and step

1069. out living in the blessing even in the

1070. valley. Amen. Can we give a hand for the

1071. word of the Lord? Amen. Come on.
