  4. up here.

  5. Amen. Come on. Is God good?

  6. >> I love what he's doing. This is do we do

  7. we I don't know if it's always apparent

  8. how incredibly

  9. odd what is happening here is how

  10. incredibly uncommon it is in our world

  11. and how incredibly grateful I am for

  12. that that we get to experience here not

  13. only the presence of God not only the

  14. ministry of what he's doing but we've

  15. got a whole bunch of people in this room

  16. worshiping wholeheartedly

  17. seeking the Lord,

  18. weeping, praising, shouting, jumping

  19. because not of who we are but what he

  20. has done for us. Come on, can we give a

  21. hand for the Lord? Let's go.

  22. I find Jesus says uh when when a a an a

  23. a previously adulterous woman, a a a

  24. demon-possessed woman and was freed and

  25. comes over and anoints his feet and

  26. cries over his feet and washes them with

  27. his hair. And people are like, "What's

  28. going on? This is weird. What is

  29. happening?" And he says, "You have no

  30. clue what she is experiencing because

  31. you think you've got it all together."

  32. and maybe you need to be forgiven of a

  33. little bit. She recognizes how much she

  34. has to be forgiven of and so therefore

  35. her worship is extravagant.

  36. If you see people around you and you're

  37. like, I'm not sure exactly what's going

  38. on with them. Maybe you're new here.

  39. Maybe you're just like, what what is

  40. going on? Is that a personality thing?

  41. Is there something happening? I want to

  42. tell you that you are surrounded by

  43. people who recognize the incredible

  44. love of Jesus and what it has done to

  45. save us. And if you're grateful for what

  46. he's done for you, come on. I want to

  47. hear it this morning. Let's go. Let's

  48. go.

  49. He's changing lives all the time. I'm so

  50. grateful. Uh just incredibly that that

  51. he would it just it astounds me that

  52. he'd do this. But um one of the one of

  53. the things in this season of life, we

  54. got three kids and they are a blast. Uh

  55. one of this in this season of life, one

  56. of my favorite things that I get to do

  57. is I got to coach my kids in sports. And

  58. uh one I I am uh uh I help out a little

  59. bit, not much with with baseball. He's

  60. outgrown me. He's too good for that. Uh

  61. but then with soccer and with my

  62. daughter in softball, uh I get to help

  63. out. And one of the interesting things

  64. that I found out uh as I started

  65. coaching, I went to coach Zion in his

  66. first soccer game this year and uh I

  67. people, multiple people actually his

  68. first couple soccer games came up and

  69. made a comment that I had totally

  70. forgotten about and uh they said, "Hey,

  71. going to be a good game." Yeah. Yeah.

  72. you're going to get carded again.

  73. And I got to confess,

  74. last season,

  75. multiple times I got a card. I got a

  76. yellow card from the referee and I

  77. wasn't even officially a coach.

  78. And and I want to clarify, I'm not an

  79. I'm not like I'm not like that dad,

  80. right? Like, what are you doing? Get

  81. over there. You got to be back. I'm

  82. like, I'm not that. I am You may have

  83. noticed I'm passionate. I'm energetic.

  84. I'm like eternally optimistically that

  85. way and I don't always realize the

  86. boundaries. I don't know all the rules

  87. of soccer and certainly not all the

  88. rules of coaching soccer. And so there's

  89. been a couple times I uh I I crossed

  90. into the enemy's territory. I I I walked

  91. across the other uh where where the the

  92. other coach was and I just walked over

  93. to the other side and I was trying to

  94. coach one of my kids over there. Yellow

  95. card. You can't do that. You're stealing

  96. their signals. I was like this is fourth

  97. grade, bro.

  98. I was not prepared for that. I was not

  99. Oh, thank you, Russ. Uh, and and then

  100. the the other time I was I was coaching

  101. the goalie back behind the goal and I

  102. was like, "You got to It's his first

  103. time." And I was like, "You got to watch

  104. it when the ball's coming up. You got to

  105. go up there. You got to come back at

  106. this time. You got to slide over this

  107. way." And another yellow card. And I've

  108. got I've got carded more times than I

  109. would like to admit as a soccer coach.

  110. And uh now I didn't even realize that.

  111. That was the past, right? Amen. It was

  112. gone. It was done. That was all last

  113. season. And first thing that one of the

  114. parents said to me is talking about how

  115. am I going to get carded this game and I

  116. haven't praised the Lord. I haven't yet.

  117. So I'm learning.

  118. But I think some of us view the Lord

  119. this way. I think a lot of times we see

  120. God as like the referee of life that's

  121. just watching us and waiting and he's

  122. got a he's got a card in his pocket and

  123. he's waiting and he's like, "Oh, that's

  124. a mistake. We got a yellow card." Yeah.

  125. And if you don't know much about soccer,

  126. there's two you get you get a you get a

  127. warning, the yellow card, and then you

  128. get a red card or and sometimes if

  129. you're real bad, if you're real stupid,

  130. I've had those times as well. Uh but uh

  131. but you'll get a you'll get a red card

  132. right away. Luckily, I haven't got a red

  133. card coaching my kid. Amen. So, I'm

  134. grateful for that. That would be

  135. embarrassing. I'm not sure what I'd

  136. supposed to be do. Like, go sit in the

  137. car for the last 20 minutes of the game.

  138. like I don't know exactly what they tell

  139. me to do, but I'd be kicked off the

  140. field. When you get a red card, you're

  141. gone. You got to leave the premises,

  142. right? It's getting teed up in

  143. basketball. Get out of here. Right? That

  144. that idea. And so I I think we view God

  145. that way where we're like, "Okay, oh,

  146. you made a mistake. Here's your one

  147. warning. Here's your yellow card.

  148. Oh, you messed up bad.

  149. You've messed up big.

  150. You messed up so bad. I'm I'm red car.

  151. You have been rejected. You have been

  152. disqualified.

  153. You are no longer allowed to play in

  154. this game of church. You can't do that

  155. anymore. Go home.

  156. A lot of times I think we view God this

  157. way.

  158. And it can't be further from the truth.

  159. As we're going through this series,

  160. we've been talking about how death is

  161. defeated. And and what we're talking

  162. about today is that we are not

  163. disqualified.

  164. And Jesus wants to restore you after

  165. your sin.

  166. And this is this is part as we've been

  167. covering in death defeated. We've been

  168. talking about how uh Jesus turns death

  169. to life. He turns the mundane into

  170. mission. He turns pain into purpose. And

  171. if you haven't caught these messages

  172. last week, we talked about pain and

  173. hurts and scars. And if you missed that,

  174. please, I want to encourage you guys,

  175. go, you can watch it online. Maybe you

  176. need to have it ministered to your soul

  177. again. It's one of those things that I

  178. got to have the Lord heal me again and

  179. again and again. Uh, but I I believe I

  180. just believe down to the the depths of

  181. me that church should be the safest

  182. place to admit our pain and not be

  183. defined by it.

  184. >> Right?

  185. And so today, what I want to talk about

  186. actually the topic that we're hitting on

  187. is if you were to if you were to do a

  188. study in the New Testament on what did

  189. the resurrection of Jesus destroy

  190. mo like what what is it what does it

  191. highlight the most? What does the New

  192. Testament highlight more than anything

  193. else? It doesn't talk about it it

  194. destroys the mundane as much. It doesn't

  195. talk about it destroys this the the the

  196. story of pain and the hurt. Yes, all

  197. that is. But actually, the number one

  198. thing that scripture talks about is it

  199. destroys sin. That's what we're talking

  200. about today. Talking about sin, about

  201. how sin does not disqualify us and how

  202. God wants to restore us. But what I want

  203. to do is I want to get some awkward

  204. pride out of the way. Right? It's easy

  205. in a message to go, "Amen. I'm gonna I'm

  206. gonna amen that one real loud for the

  207. person beside me. They needed that." Oh,

  208. Pastor Drew, that was good. That person

  209. up there looks like they really

  210. That was for them. I'm going to Amen.

  211. So, the kids, they didn't look like they

  212. were paying attention. I think they're I

  213. think they're scrolling on their phone.

  214. Amen. That was so good. That was so

  215. good. Right. Like we're we're trying to

  216. signal to other people and we'll amen

  217. for someone else. But I got a question

  218. for us. Who in this room is a sinner?

  219. >> All right. You better get your hand up.

  220. You better get your hand up. Who's a

  221. sinner? All right. Who in this room is

  222. is is qualified

  223. has has been good enough by their own

  224. works to be able to get into heaven. Get

  225. your hand down. Get your hand down. No.

  226. No. No. Right. That is not any of us.

  227. Who in this room has sin in your past

  228. that you go, I am not proud of that.

  229. Come on. Right. who has sinned in your

  230. past that you're like, I just try to

  231. keep it hidden as much as possible

  232. because I I I got stuff behind me. I got

  233. stuff in my past that I don't like.

  234. There's a reality that a lot of times

  235. when we think about ourselves and when

  236. we think about where we're at right now,

  237. we often think, I've been redarted.

  238. I've been disqualified.

  239. I'm not one of those people that Jesus

  240. goes after. I'm not one of those churchy

  241. people. I'm not one of those like

  242. shiny smile on all the time Christians

  243. that got all the right words and say all

  244. the nice things and and and when they

  245. serve people like all all that I I just

  246. that's not me. I haven't been that way.

  247. And we pass it off as if we have been

  248. disqualified because of our past,

  249. because of our current attitude or

  250. things that we call our as ourselves,

  251. our identity and our personality. When

  252. in reality, some of those things may be

  253. you. Some of those things may just need

  254. to change, but they can't change without

  255. a savior.

  256. And I think one of the best pictures of

  257. how to handle my own sin and my

  258. sinfulness actually comes after the

  259. resurrection as Jesus meets with Peter

  260. for the first recorded meeting that

  261. Peter has with Jesus after he denies

  262. him.

  263. Keep in mind the last conversation that

  264. this is a summary of the last

  265. conversations that they had, right? Do

  266. you love me? Yes, I love you. I love you

  267. so much. I would never reject you. I'd

  268. never deny you. Everyone else may may

  269. give you up, but I will never. Peter

  270. declares, "I will never I would die for

  271. you." And then he says, "Okay, great.

  272. Thank you. Let's come over to this

  273. garden. Let's pray together. Just stay

  274. awake and pray. That's all I ask." Falls

  275. asleep.

  276. Falls asleep again. Falls asleep again.

  277. And then when when Jesus is getting

  278. arrested, they all run away. And then

  279. Peter, not only does he not confess

  280. Jesus as his Lord, denies him three

  281. times over and watches Jesus be murdered

  282. brutally on a cross.

  283. And then

  284. it's almost like it's worse for Peter

  285. that Jesus rises again

  286. and he's like, I gotta come face to face

  287. with him.

  288. I gota now this is this is interesting

  289. what we see in in the response

  290. of how Jesus restores Peter. This is in

  291. John 21. In fact, today we're going to

  292. be in two different passages. If you got

  293. a paper Bible, this will help keep a

  294. finger over in Romans chapter 5

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  295. through8. And then we're going to be

  296. focusing today on the story in John

    John 21 chapter mention

  297. chapter 21. John 21:1 if you got a

    John 21:1

  298. digital Bible. Uh you can't do that as

  299. easily. So, uh that's fine. But open up

  300. to John 21. That's where we're going to

  301. start. Start. Uh we can't go through all

  302. of Romans 5 through8. That's a big

  303. that's four chapters. We can't go

  304. through that. But I want to encourage

  305. you guys. John 21 talks about what

  306. happens. Romans 5 through8 talks about

  307. how it's made possible.

  308. Please, I want to encourage you guys.

  309. Would you go home and read? Just make a

  310. note. Make a bookmark in your phone on

  311. your Bible Romans 5 through8 and start

  312. reading through that. It's hard to read

  313. Romans and not actually study Romans. So

  314. it will be as you read it and you go, I

  315. have no clue what that just said. That

  316. is really hard. That's actually the

  317. purpose of Romans to read a passage and

  318. go, I'm going have to reread that and

  319. reread it again and again and again. And

  320. what's going to happen is it starts to

  321. get inside of you and it starts to

  322. really build life inside. And I I'm I

  323. may read there's some passages that I'm

  324. like I'll read the sentence. I'll read

  325. the sentence again. I'll go back and

  326. I'll read before and I'll kind of skim

  327. over what comes after and then I'll read

  328. the passage again and okay, now it's

  329. starting to come alive. Now I'm starting

  330. to understand it. And the cool thing

  331. about Romans is you don't have to have

  332. like a deep knowledge of the Old

  333. Testament and all this like theology

  334. stuff in order to get it. But it does

  335. take a little bit of digging. So it

  336. becomes your own. And it's really so I

  337. want to encourage you guys read Romans 5

  338. through8 on your own. We're going to

  339. skim through some verses around there.

  340. But this is what happens. Uh Jesus, this

  341. is the third time he appears to his

  342. disciples. It's a little over a week

  343. after the resurrection and says later

  344. Jesus appeared again to the disciples

  345. beside the Sea of Galilee. And this is

  346. how it happened. Several of the

  347. disciples were there. Simon Peter,

  348. Thomas nicknamed the twin, Nathaniel

  349. from Canaan and Galilee, the sons of

  350. Zebedee and two other disciples. Simon

  351. Peter said, "I'm going fishing."

  352. That's important. Bookmark that. I'm

  353. going fishing. He says, "We'll come

  354. too." They all said, "So they went out

  355. in the boat, but they caught nothing.

  356. All night. And at dawn, Jesus was

  357. standing on the beach, but the disciples

  358. couldn't see who he was." So this is

  359. what I want to real quick. Well, I'm I'm

  360. gonna I'm gonna keep going before I get

  361. ahead of myself. Let's keep going. Verse

  362. five. He called out, "Fellows, have you

  363. caught any fish? Any any guys that like

  364. to fish? Any people like to fish? Guys,

  365. ladies, come on. There you go. When

  366. you're having a bad fishing day, how

  367. great does it feel when it says, "Hey,

  368. the fish biting."

  369. >> No, bro. Actually, no. They're not at

  370. all. Terribly. No. I haven't caught a

  371. single thing. Huh? Well, that's just

  372. you. All right. Like, I don't know what

  373. they're thinking. It's a shame. You

  374. don't You don't like to admit that. No,

  375. we haven't caught anything. Thanks for

  376. asking. Then he said, "Why don't you

  377. throw your net out to the other side of

  378. the boat, the right hand side?" Now,

  379. that's usually where some of the the

  380. ores would be kept. And so, it was they

  381. wouldn't always throw the net. It

  382. usually was over on the left side of the

  383. boat. And so, they did and they okay,

  384. we'll try it out. And they couldn't haul

  385. in the net because there were so many

  386. fish in it. Then the disciple Jesus

  387. loved, that's John who wrote this book,

  388. John said to Peter, "It's the Lord." And

  389. when Simon Peter heard that it was the

  390. Lord, he put on his tunic for he'd

  391. stripped for work. He'd have like a

  392. little like skirt like uh loin cloth

  393. kind of thing on and that's not

  394. appropriate to go greet someone in. So

  395. he throws on his tunic, jumps into the

  396. water and heads to shore.

  397. Now this is there there's a couple

  398. things in here that I want to highlight.

  399. First of all, uh we talked about this a

  400. little bit. talked about the beginning

  401. of this passage two weeks ago. When the

  402. disciples go back, they're about 60 to

  403. 75 miles north of where they last saw

  404. Jesus in Jerusalem. They've gone back

  405. home. It takes a very intentional trip

  406. to go up to Galilee from Jerusalem. This

  407. was not an accident. They are going back

  408. and then Peter says, "I'm going

  409. fishing."

  410. Peter says that he wants to go back to

  411. the old things. God's never never never

  412. never ever go back. Once you've

  413. experienced the father, once you

  414. experience his love, once you experience

  415. his grace, you can't live the same. You

  416. can't walk the same. You can't operate

  417. the same. In fact, what ends up

  418. happening is similar to what you see

  419. here. That you'll toil, you'll work all

  420. night long and catch nothing. you'll

  421. find that everything I'm I think I'm

  422. doing the right things. I'm trying and

  423. yet the fulfillment's not there. I'm

  424. working. I'm laboring and yet there's no

  425. fruit in it. That's that's life. when

  426. I've tasted it and then I try to go back

  427. and I try to do life the same way I've

  428. always done it. That will be the most

  429. hollow experience you can have when

  430. you're when you've once tasted the light

  431. in the life of Christ.

  432. But what's interesting here is uh if you

  433. if you study there's a lot of

  434. theologians and a lot of scholars and I

  435. I I didn't even realize this just as I

  436. was studying this passage and then I

  437. realized that a lot of people agree with

  438. me that when Simon can we go back to 1

  439. through 4 can we get that? Uh when Simon

  440. says, "I'm going to go fishing,"

  441. what he's doing is he's inviting the

  442. other disciples to come back to the old

  443. life with him.

  444. And there's a couple different things

  445. that happens that makes me realize not

  446. only this, but also how Jesus talks to

  447. Simon and and uh in in the verses follow

  448. that but but then also how the angel at

  449. the tomb

  450. talks about the disciples and the angel

  451. at the tomb says go and tell all of

  452. Jesus's disciples that he is risen. also

  453. tell Peter

  454. there's now a separation

  455. that's happened and I think what happens

  456. is Peter has denied

  457. the commission that Jesus gave to him

  458. not his love for Jesus not his his

  459. belief in Jesus Peter didn't stop

  460. believing in Jesus but I do think he

  461. stopped believing in himself myself.

  462. I've tried.

  463. I did that. I went all in. I failed so

  464. hardcore. I gave the public affirmation.

  465. I would never in front of all his

  466. friends. I love you more than all of

  467. these folks. In front of them, he stands

  468. up that boldly. I'd give my life for

  469. you. Public affirmation in an extremely

  470. public failure.

  471. rejecting Jesus three times before the

  472. sun had risen that next morning.

  473. And he

  474. by his own selfassessment

  475. disqualified himself.

  476. I did that. I tried. Jesus himself said,

  477. "If you deny me before man, I will deny

  478. you before the father. I know what

  479. happens. I know what I did. I am no

  480. longer one of those guys. I'm no longer

  481. one of the disciples. I have received

  482. the red card. I know it. I can feel it.

  483. I'm done. But I still love him.

  484. I still believe. I just I've

  485. disqualified myself.

  486. This is

  487. this is how so many of us live. In fact,

  488. it's the it's the reason why so many

  489. people will live say, "I'm a believer.

  490. I'm a follower of Jesus." And yet for

  491. for 10, 20, 30, 40, 60, 70 years, we

  492. will live the exact same way

  493. as the world that is not following

  494. Jesus. And be amazed, why is my life not

  495. changing? And be amazed, why does

  496. nothing feel different? Why do I still

  497. feel in bondage? Why do I still feel

  498. stuck? Why do I still feel like there's

  499. not a freedom in where like in in this

  500. life? is abundant life. And a lot of

  501. times that's a result of I'm trying I'm

  502. I'm saying I'm following Jesus, but I'm

  503. trying to live like someone who doesn't.

  504. And it's going to kill you. It's going

  505. to destroy you because

  506. Jesus

  507. Jesus doesn't want to reject you. He

  508. wants to restore you. And that's what we

  509. see next in

  510. in John 21:15.

    John 21:15

  511. It says what happened what happened next

  512. after Peter goes on land. Jesus is like,

  513. "Help your help help the dudes bring the

  514. fish in, man. You're a little bit too a

  515. little too excited. Help him." So he

  516. helps him bring it in. They cook some

  517. fish up. They have some breakfast

  518. together. And so then it says, "After

  519. breakfast, Jesus asked Simon Peter,

  520. Simon, in front of the other guys, son

  521. of John, do you love me more than

  522. these?"

  523. Now, this is curious because

  524. in this, in order to understand this

  525. passage, you got to dive into the

  526. original language, the Greek that it was

  527. written in. So, I'm going to give you

  528. guys a little bit of insight into that.

  529. Uh, but there's no like noun that it's

  530. highlighting here. Do you love me more

  531. than these?

  532. And I think the reason is is because

  533. there's supposed to be a little bit of

  534. ambiguity here.

  535. Now, what is he referring to? The only

  536. two the only two things that we know

  537. that they're surrounded by is Peter's

  538. surrounded by his disciples, by his

  539. other by by the friends, and he's

  540. surrounded by the fish and the nets and

  541. the boats and all of that stuff. I think

  542. I think Jesus probably was going, "Do

  543. you love me more than these? Do you love

  544. me more than the than than the fishing?

  545. Do you love me more than that old

  546. calling?

  547. Do you know that fishing was actually it

  548. was a decent job? And so it was it it

  549. was do you love me more than maybe the

  550. wealth that you could get from this

  551. role?

  552. Do you love me more than the things of

  553. this world?

  554. But I think the other double on tandra

  555. that Jesus is doing here

  556. is do you love me more than these

  557. disciples?

  558. Not saying do you love me more than you

  559. love the disciples, but do you love me

  560. more than the disciples love me?

  561. Calling back to that that same thing

  562. that Peter had said.

  563. And the word that he uses here, there's

  564. a few different Greek words for the word

  565. love. And Jesus says, "Do you agapa? Do

  566. you agape?" And what that word means is

  567. agape is this like intentional

  568. decision, committed unconditional love,

  569. right? Like I I'm not changing. I've

  570. made the decision. That's the type of

  571. love that we're called to in marriage.

  572. Not ju not not just to uh to feel the

  573. butterflies at all times. The the agape

  574. love. you're not going to feel

  575. butterflies your entire whatever however

  576. long till death do its part in marriage.

  577. So the reality is is I've got to make a

  578. decision and I've got to be committed.

  579. >> I've got to I got to make sure that this

  580. is something that I've made as a choice

  581. now and I'm deciding it every morning

  582. every day for the rest of my life. And

  583. Jesus says do you agape me?

  584. Yes, Lord. Peter replied, you know I

  585. fileo you. He uses a different word for

  586. love. What this fileo means is it means

  587. kind of like a a friendship, but like

  588. it's this deep affection love. It's it's

  589. kind of the more emotional side of it.

  590. It's the I I care. I love you. Um and

  591. and almost like he's saying clearly my

  592. love commitment

  593. is terrible.

  594. So yes, Lord, I fileo you. I have a deep

  595. affection for you, but my commitment is

  596. lacking.

  597. I have shown that.

  598. And then Jesus says, "Then feed my

  599. lambs." And he and he begins to

  600. introduce this recommissioning of Peter.

  601. Feed my lambs. Be a shepherd. Care for.

  602. Give the gospel to the children of the

  603. faith. Right? Feed my lambs. Jesus told

  604. him. Then Jesus repeated the question.

  605. Simon son of John, do you agape me?

  606. Yes, Lord. Peter said, you know, I fileo

  607. you.

  608. I do. I love you, but I can't love you

  609. to the level of love that you love me.

  610. I've witnessed that. I found that.

  611. Then take care of my sheep. Jesus said a

  612. third time. He asked him, "Simon, son of

  613. John, do you agileo

  614. me?"

  615. Peter was hurt that Jesus asked the

  616. question a third time. And Jesus is now

  617. pulling that back to the level of love

  618. that Peter is capable of.

  619. He says, "Lord, you know everything. You

  620. know that I fileo you." Jesus said,

  621. "Then feed my sheep." And later next

  622. verse it says then Jesus told him follow

  623. me

  624. and he restores the whole the whole

  625. heart of Jesus

  626. after the resurrection we see that

  627. there's that what Jesus reveals when he

  628. meets us in the midst of our sin and the

  629. first thing is that his resurrection

  630. breaks sin's authority

  631. >> see I don't think when Jesus is saying

  632. do you fileo me the last time he's not

  633. saying Listen, your your imperfect love,

  634. you just got to stick with it where it's

  635. at, right? I think what he's saying is,

  636. I'll take what you can currently give

  637. me.

  638. I'm calling you higher.

  639. I'm calling you to agape love.

  640. But if that's all that you have right

  641. now, I'm meeting you where you are at.

  642. Keep in mind, Jesus appeared to them at

  643. the Sea of Galilee. Jesus is the one

  644. pursuing them. Jesus is the one pursuing

  645. Peter when Peter's been the one that

  646. rejected Jesus. And now he says, "I must

  647. have been rejected. I must have been

  648. disqualified because of the way that I

  649. rejected." But here's the reality. Jesus

  650. shows that his resurrection breaks sin's

  651. authority.

  652. Jesus denied Peter. Sorry, Peter denied

  653. Jesus three times. Jesus restores Peter

  654. three times over. again and again and

  655. again to the fullness of your failure.

  656. He wants to restore you.

  657. >> Amen.

  658. >> This is why your sin, it's amazing

  659. because sin when when when we talk about

  660. how sin is broken, how sin is powerless

  661. to Jesus, the reality is is that one of

  662. the things that sin does is sin

  663. separates us from God and it makes us so

  664. that we do not have access to him

  665. because he's perfect. He created the

  666. design of all this and sin is missing

  667. the mark. And so when I am imperfect,

  668. when I miss the mark, when I do things

  669. that misaligned with the design that he

  670. has, now I'm no longer perfect. I'm

  671. automatically naturally separated from

  672. him because of my sin.

  673. And what it does is it produces death

  674. inside of me.

  675. And it it creates this this stain on me.

  676. Yet

  677. in Jesus,

  678. he says, "Your sin

  679. actually becomes your testimony." He

  680. wants to restore it so that you come to

  681. him. You give it to him. You give your

  682. mess to him. your sinfulness, your all

  683. the all the ugly the things that only he

  684. knows.

  685. You give that to him and he says, "I'm

  686. building a testimony out of this.

  687. >> I will restore you to the level of your

  688. failure

  689. to the level that you have rejected me.

  690. I actually want to restore you." This is

  691. this is what's crazy because Romans 5:8

    Romans 5:8

  692. says God demonstrates his love

  693. for us. How does he show his love to us

  694. is that while we were still sinners,

  695. Christ died for us. Do not think for a

  696. second

  697. that you got to first clean some crap up

  698. before you come to Jesus. Do not think

  699. for a second that you got to fix a

  700. couple things and then you're good

  701. enough to step into church. Don't think

  702. about it for a second. Sometimes people

  703. go, "I got to get a little bit of

  704. restoration before I come and approach

  705. someone and and and talk about my sin

  706. and talk about my mistake." But because

  707. I've already started to do this and I've

  708. already got some restoration. Jesus

  709. wants you right now.

  710. He wants you so desperately right now in

  711. the midst of it to come to him while we

  712. were still sinners. He died for us.

  713. Jesus resurrection frees us from the

  714. power of sin. Romans 6:14 says it this

    Romans 6:14

  715. way. Sin will have no dominion, no

  716. power, no authority over you since you

  717. are not under law. But now you are under

  718. grace.

  719. See Jesus Jesus sacrifice it paves the

  720. road that grace rides in on.

  721. It's it's incredible. His so his

  722. resurrection is revealing this

  723. powerlessness of sin. Romans 6 1-4 says

  724. it this way. What shall we say then? If

  725. I've got all this grace from God, if

  726. that's this good thing, should should I

  727. go on sinning so that grace may continue

  728. to increase? If he if my sin just

  729. becomes a story, becomes a testimony,

  730. why don't I just like keep building my

  731. testimony, right? I can live the way I

  732. want. No,

  733. we are those who have died to sin. How

  734. can we live in it any longer? There's

  735. two options with sin, two products of

  736. sin, two responses. It'll either kill me

  737. or I got to die to it.

  738. >> Those are the only things that I can do.

  739. I've got to die because it's not I got

  740. to overcome it. It's not I got to work

  741. beyond it. It's not I got to outdo my

  742. dirty with my clean. It's not got to be

  743. better good than I am being bad. It's

  744. I've got to die to that. There's a part

  745. of me that needs to be killed,

  746. needs to be crucified. I need to I need

  747. to destroy that thing. Or don't you know

  748. verse three, don't you know that all of

  749. us who were baptized into Christ Jesus

  750. were baptized into his death? We were

  751. therefore buried with him through

  752. baptism into death in order that just as

  753. Christ was raised from the dead through

  754. glory of the father we too may live a

  755. new life. This is what baptism is guys.

  756. It's just a couple what three weeks I

  757. think it is until we have our baptism

  758. Sunday. I want to we we got new life

  759. Sunday. Please I want to encourage us if

  760. you have made the decision

  761. in your in when when you can make your

  762. own in your valitional life. I can make

  763. my own decision. It's not my parents

  764. making the decision for me because I'm a

  765. kid. It's not anybody else baptizing me

  766. when I was a baby. If you've never been

  767. baptized, that's what this passage is

  768. talking about. Dying to your old self.

  769. Give it up. Put it in the grave. And

  770. it's the public declaration of that.

  771. That's why we see baptism as both it's

  772. both as a result of my own decision. So

  773. it's not it's we don't see baptism ever.

  774. We don't see infant baptism ever in

  775. scripture. And so I don't I don't I

  776. don't I mean we could get into the

  777. church history as to where that came

  778. from, but uh what we do here, what we

  779. see, we practice what we see in the

  780. word. And I'm not going to build on it.

  781. I'm not going to put anybody else's word

  782. above what I see in the word. And so

  783. this is what we see. We see baptism

  784. dedications for a child. I will dedicate

  785. them. I will give them to the Lord. And

  786. I'll say, I will raise this child

  787. according to the ways of the Lord. And I

  788. give this child. I pray that Lord, you

  789. would hold this child in your hands. And

  790. I pray that you would lead this child

  791. their entire life. And that someday they

  792. will make that same decision that I have

  793. made. And that's where baptism is. It's

  794. I have made the decision. I have decided

  795. to follow Jesus. I have died. I've been

  796. buried. And that's why we do baptism.

  797. Not a little sprinkling. You've been

  798. buried. Baptizo lit the Greek word

  799. literally means to submerge. It's been

  800. you it's been interpreted in in certain

  801. context. The best word to interpret it

  802. is to drown to die under the water. This

  803. submission I'm buried in the grave.

  804. Baptism is both a burial and a birth at

  805. the same time. I am baptized and then

  806. I'm given new life in him. I've died to

  807. my old self. There's a new life. We got

  808. a QR code. If you want, if you got

  809. questions about baptism, if you've never

  810. made the decision to get baptized, but

  811. you've made the decision that I want to

  812. follow Jesus, or you're curious about

  813. that, we want to invite you into that.

  814. Would you scan this QR code so that you

  815. can jump in? We're going to have a

  816. conversation about and and and I'll I'll

  817. chat with you. Hey, what do we need?

  818. What questions do you have about

  819. baptism? Are you ready? Are we ready?

  820. Because this is a public declaration of

  821. a private reality. And I pray, I

  822. believe, I know there's people in this

  823. room that God is leading you into this.

  824. Would you respond

  825. when we're called? How when when people

  826. say to Peter, "How do I respond to the

  827. gospel of Jesus?" Later, Peter says,

  828. "You repent," which is what we're

  829. talking about today. It's turning from

  830. my old ways, and then you be baptized.

  831. Those are your responses. And so we see

  832. here, I I got to I got to keep this

  833. rolling because this is this is what

  834. what I find is so powerful. The second

  835. thing that we see from the resurrection

  836. is not that just it it breaks sin's

  837. authority. It's not that just uh uh that

  838. but it's also that grace. There we go.

  839. Thank you. Grace makes sin okay. Doesn't

  840. make sin okay. It makes new life

  841. possible.

  842. I think when we think about sin, we got

  843. to understand what it is.

  844. Jesus doesn't look at us and say,

  845. "You're sinning, therefore you're bad."

  846. Sin doesn't make you bad. It makes you

  847. dead.

  848. Sin separates me from God. God is the

  849. carrier of life.

  850. What do I get when I'm separated from

  851. life? Death is the only option. What do

  852. I get when I'm separated from love,

  853. hate, wrath? What do I get when I'm

  854. separated from grace, judgment, my

  855. decision?

  856. It's not that God's not God's not

  857. waiting to pull this red card out. He's

  858. waiting to restore you. He's desperately

  859. waiting. Is it's And so I got to take

  860. here's the thing I find we got to take

  861. our sin more seriously. Our sin is more

  862. severe than we yet even know. It is

  863. causing it has us caught in this trap of

  864. death that I cannot escape on my own.

  865. has me standing on one side of a

  866. millionmile chasm and God standing on

  867. the other side. And I cannot bridge that

  868. on my own. I got to take my sin

  869. seriously.

  870. But we see here,

  871. I love this.

  872. I want to I want to I want to jump into

  873. this. Romans 6:11 says, "Count

    Romans 6:11

  874. yourselves dead to sin."

  875. Count yourselves dead to sin and alive

  876. in God in Christ Jesus. Do not let sin

  877. reign in your mortal body so that you

  878. obey its evil desires. I got to treat it

  879. seriously. I got to I got to come

  880. forward in this thing. I don't try to

  881. abuse God's grace. I try to get rid of

  882. this thing. I try to die to this thing

  883. every day. Do not offer part of your sin

  884. yourself as sin as an instrument of

  885. wickedness, but rather offer yourselves

  886. to God as those who have been brought

  887. from death to life. Offer every part of

  888. yourself to him as an instrument of

  889. righteousness. For sin no longer can be

  890. your master. It has been overcome

  891. because you are not under the law. You

  892. are not under performance. There's no

  893. red card and yellow card waiting over

  894. you. You are under grace. And so this is

  895. this is where I want to get into the

  896. last point. His grace is greater.

  897. This is this is the most powerful thing

  898. about this. I guys, I want you to look

  899. at the two the two miracles of Jesus

  900. catching the fish or or of Jesus having

  901. the disciples catch the fish. And both

  902. times he says, "Try again." And then

  903. they get this enormous catch of fish.

  904. They recognize something miraculous just

  905. happened. And there's two different two

  906. different times that this happens. This

  907. happens right when he's about to call

  908. the disciples. Peter being one of those

  909. first disciples. And he says, "Come

  910. follow me and I will make you fishers of

  911. men." The second is after Peter has

  912. rejected Jesus. Jesus has risen again.

  913. Now Peter has to come face to face with

  914. a guy who died for him and he couldn't

  915. even give a positive word for him.

  916. Peter's sin was greater

  917. the second time that the miracle

  918. happened.

  919. And we see the first time, how does

  920. Peter respond? Matthew or Luke 5'8. When

  921. Simon Peter saw that this man was

  922. supernatural, when saw who who who Jesus

  923. was, he fell at Jesus' knees and he

  924. says, "Get away.

  925. Leave." Can you imagine that? Leave me.

  926. I'm a sinful man. I see my sin. I see

  927. that you're good. And it's the response

  928. that many of the times we have. We see

  929. our sin. I see his glory. I see his

  930. righteousness. And I say, "Get away. Get

  931. away. Please. I'm pushing you away.

  932. Please back away. I am not the person

  933. that you want. I am not the type of

  934. person that you need. I am a wretched

  935. wretched sinner. Don't Don't come near

  936. me, please." And we try to hold him at

  937. at arms length. But here's the thing.

  938. Then Jesus spends three years with Peter

  939. and Peter sees not just his power, not

  940. just his authority, but he sees his

  941. love. What happens the second time that

  942. he recognizes who Jesus is? Miraculous

  943. catch of fish. And then we see in John

    John 21:7

  944. 21:7 that John, the disciple Jesus love

  945. said to Peter, "It's Jesus."

  946. Peter heard that it was the Lord, threw

  947. on his tunic, jumped in the water, and

  948. he runs to Jesus,

  949. not because his sin was not even

  950. greater, but because he recognized the

  951. incredible love of Jesus that when I see

  952. his love, when I see his grace, I must

  953. come to him in my sin.

  954. Would you can we stand up? I want to ask

  955. for us to respond the same way because

  956. the the one who had heard I don't know

  957. how many times Jesus gave the parable of

  958. the prodigal son in front of Peter but

  959. he heard the story again and again and

  960. yet now the prodigal the one who had

  961. heard the story of the prodigal son was

  962. now returning

  963. was the child returning to their master

  964. to their savior

  965. and this is the response because I got

  966. to recognize that My sin is more severe

  967. than I think it is,

  968. but his grace is greater than I realize

  969. it is.

  970. And it's in that place that I want to

  971. encourage you. You got two options here.

  972. You're coming face to face with the

  973. father. You're coming face to face with

  974. the savior.

  975. Which Peter are you going to model?

  976. The Peter that turned Jesus away said,

  977. "Please leave me." And rejected him.

  978. Or the Peter that after the rejection

  979. sees the incredible love of Jesus

  980. and runs to him with everything in his

  981. heart, jumps out of the boat, swims

  982. across the sea so he can get to his

  983. savior and fall at his feet. And in

  984. saying instead of saying leave me, he

  985. says help me.

  986. And then that is the that is the only

  987. way. If Peter runs to Jesus, he's

  988. restored. If he runs away, he misses it.

  989. And he will never be the Peter that we

  990. know him to be.

  991. He would be the the the disciple that

  992. was just a little bit better than Judas.

  993. And yet he runs to Jesus. Will you run?

  994. So, I got a couple things

  995. I want to see. Grace is found at the

  996. altar. Grace, the altar is a place where

  997. they'd bring their sacrifice where

  998. they'd say, "I I I I'm bringing my

  999. sacrifice to you. My lamb, my my grain,

1000. my whatever offering and I bring it."

1001. Now, Jesus said in in Romans talks in

1002. Romans chapter 12 is, "I'm going to be a

    Romans 12 chapter mention

1003. living sacrifice. I'm going to live. I'm

1004. not going to I'm not literally

1005. physically dying, but I'm going to be a

1006. living sacrifice that lives on the

1007. altar. Lives on a place of regularly

1008. killing the things inside of me that

  1009. need to die.

1010. Grace is found at that altar at the feet

1011. of Jesus. So what I want to ask is I

  1012. want to invite us.

  1013. And Jesus is here.

  1014. He sees your sin

1015. more clearly than you even see your own

  1016. sin.

  1017. I say, "I'm a wretched man." And he

1018. says, "You actually have no idea.

1019. The things even the things that you

1020. thought were good, you're actually doing

  1021. in the wrong way.

1022. And yet, I want you. I love you. I

1023. desire you. I'm calling you and ready to

  1024. restore you.

1025. So if I if you've seen Jesus as the as

1026. the giver of red cards

1027. who wants to reject you, he wants to

1028. restore you. And what I want to do is I

1029. just want to invite would you

  1030. would you respond?

1031. Run to Jesus. Run to the feet of Jesus

1032. and come up here. We're calling this the

  1033. altar.

1034. There's nothing special about these

1035. tiles up here, but there is something

1036. special about physically responding. If

1037. that's you, would you come on up and

1038. say, "I need to run to Jesus. I need to

1039. run to him in all my imperfection. I

1040. need to run to him in all my mess. I'm

1041. going to choose after whatever else I

1042. may have done at whatever whatever sin."

1043. Remember, we already all admitted it. We

1044. already are all in the exact same boat

1045. of the person that has rejected Jesus

1046. and desperately needs him. If you go,

1047. I'm coming to the feet of the father

1048. right now for the first time ever, for

1049. the first time in a long time, or maybe

1050. just I need to I need to repent. And

1051. what repentance is is is I'm I've been

1052. walking my own way. I've been doing my

1053. own thing. And instead, I'm going to

  1054. turn.

1055. I don't have it all figured out. I'm not

1056. way over there. There's other people who

1057. I feel like are spiritually in a

1058. different place than I am, but I'm just

1059. going to turn. I'm just going to face

1060. him, and I'm going to start my journey

1061. of walking towards him. That's this

1062. repentance. If that's you, would could

1063. we get could we get some of our prayer

1064. team to come up here first? And as our

1065. prayer team comes on up, you can come up

1066. and respond as well. Come on up. And I

1067. want to ask for us if you need to

1068. respond, if you need to repent, if you

1069. need to turn from your old ways, if you

1070. need to say, "Jesus, I give you my mess.

1071. I give you my sin. I give you my my

1072. pain, my issues, my dirtiness, all of

1073. it. Would you meet me with your grace?"

1074. He wants to meet you. Come on up. Come

1075. on up. And I want to pray, heavenly

1076. father, in the name of Jesus, I pray as

1077. I as I we lift you up right here in this

1078. place. I pray God that you would so

  1079. establish your love here.

1080. That our sin is not the cause of

1081. rejection. You have defeated the power

1082. of sin. It no longer separates us from

1083. you. It now draws us toward you. And so,

1084. Father God, would we respond with a

1085. genuine, humble, broken repentance as

1086. you restore us? God, I pray for those

1087. who are here that need to respond still.

1088. That need to respond still

  1089. to say, "Yes,

1090. I will give my mess to Jesus."

1091. Would we make the decision in all of our

1092. shame and all of our sin and all of our

  1093. guilt?

1094. Would we make the decision to run to the

1095. cross instead of running away from it?

1096. And may that become our habit. May that

  1097. become our lifestyle.

1098. In the mighty name of Jesus,

1099. in the mighty name of Jesus, I pray your

1100. victory. I pray you would turn these

  1101. sins into a testimony.

1102. God, I pray you would turn this

  1103. sinfulness into righteousness.

1104. I pray that you would show those who

1105. think they are disqualified that you are

1106. about to restore them. That they are not

  1107. rejected,

1108. but you want to build

  1109. a new life

1110. and we give it to you. We lay it at the

1111. altar. all of our sin, all of our mess.

1112. In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray.

  1113. Amen.

1114. Amen. What I want to do real quick,

1115. your your response here, we we're going

1116. to we're going to let them continue to

1117. do ministry here. What I want to what I

1118. want to do is I want to ask there's not

1119. a single person in here that doesn't

1120. have sin, that doesn't have guilt, that

1121. doesn't have that that that need to run

1122. to the father. And so what I want to ask

1123. is before you leave, can you do

1124. something a little bit uncomfortable

1125. and find someone that can that you can

1126. go to and you can give a little

  1127. confession and say, "Hey, here's here's

1128. where here's the what I'm dealing with

1129. and what I want to say. Someone talks to

1130. you about sin, you meet them as best as

1131. you can like Jesus, okay? You meet him

  1132. with grace.

1133. And we're what we're going to do is is

1134. then we can actually battle with each

1135. other. You don't have to do this alone.

1136. Find some accountability. And then what

1137. do we do together? We turn towards the

  1138. father.

1139. >> Together we go to him. Together we fall

1140. at his feet. And I will intercede. I

1141. will pray with you. I will I will

1142. minister with you at the feet of Jesus.

1143. I encourage you, find someone before you

1144. leave who can walk with you in the

  1145. journey

1146. to becoming more like him every single

  1147. day.

1148. >> Can we give a hand for the word of the

  1149. Lord? Amen.

1150. >> Hey, thanks so much for watching today's

1151. message. Our prayer is more than the

1152. words that were spoken in the message

1153. that you would remember the things that

1154. God spoke to your heart.

1155. >> Yeah. And no matter what it was that God

1156. spoke to you, I know that part of your

1157. journey is other people being in a
