  1. My name is Taylor. For those those of

  2. you that don't know me, I'm excited to

  3. preach today. But first, our pastors,

  4. you will notice, are not here today. And

  5. they are so sad to not be here. They

  6. were on a flight that was supposed to

  7. get in last night, but it got delayed as

  8. flights do usually. So, just want to let

  9. everybody know they are really sorry to

  10. not be here, but instead of them, you

  11. get me today. So, we'll we'll see how it

  12. goes. All right. My message today as

  13. part of our summer lean-in series is

  14. titled Walking with the Holy Spirit. And

  15. I am going to be honest, I knew, and my

  16. husband can attest to this, that I

  17. wanted to talk about the Holy Spirit for

  18. my message probably, I don't know, six

  19. or so months ago, but I was so nervous

  20. about it. Um, because it's pretty out of

  21. my element. I have preached a few times

  22. up here, but I am really used to just

  23. telling my story instead of explaining

  24. theology because in this world today, in

  25. any world, people can argue your

  26. theology, but it's really hard to argue

  27. what actually happened to you. So,

  28. telling my story is a little bit safer.

  29. Um, so usually I tell my story and then

  30. I cry. I don't usually plan that part,

  31. but it happens every time. So chasing

  32. down this topic which is deeply

  33. spiritual is a little intimidating. So

  34. I'm starting with that to preface with I

  35. don't have everything right. But I was

  36. actually thinking as I was writing this

  37. message. I don't know if I even fully

  38. understand the Holy Spirit myself and

  39. that's why I want to talk about it.

  40. Sometimes I feel weird even talking

  41. about it cuz it feels like a topic that

  42. just belongs to people who are deeply

  43. spiritual or maybe spiritual elite like

  44. pastors, worship leaders and not just

  45. like a regular old Christian girl like

  46. me. So I knew I wanted to learn more. I

  47. want to understand him more and I want

  48. to know the Holy Spirit better. So as I

  49. was preparing and learning, I started to

  50. feel less intimidated by the topic

  51. because I know I don't know everything.

  52. I was studying the Bible to this week

  53. just like any other Christian trying to

  54. figure things out. And this is not going

  55. to be me pretending to be an expert on

  56. theology. This is just an invitation for

  57. us to learn together to discover who the

  58. Holy Spirit is, what he does, and what

  59. does it look like to walk with the Holy

  60. Spirit every day. So, if we're going to

  61. walk with him, we have to start I'm

  62. going to turn the sound off on my

  63. computer first. There. Um we have to

  64. start at the beginning of understanding

  65. who the Holy Spirit is. Right? Before we

  66. can understand what someone can do for

  67. us, we have to understand who he is so

  68. that we know how to walk with him. So if

  69. you are like me, when you hear the

  70. phrase Holy Spirit, your mind might go

  71. to like an energy um or maybe just like

  72. a feeling that you get during a really

  73. intense time of worship or an intense

  74. time of prayer. But that is our first

  75. mistake. That's my first mistake as

  76. well. The Bible says the Holy Spirit is

  77. a person. My first slide is a very

  78. simple slide. Know him. The Holy Spirit

  79. is not just a power to experience. He's

  80. a person to know. Not person as in a

  81. physical body, but a person as in an

  82. entity that you can interact with, that

  83. you can have relationship with. So, if

  84. you have your Bibles, we're going to

  85. start in John. John 16:7. And I'm going

    John 16:7

  86. to set the scene for us. So this is like

  87. the last supper. Jesus is getting ready

  88. to be or he's about to be arrested. He's

  89. about to be crucified and he's with his

  90. disciples. They have been walking next

  91. to him for years at this point. They are

  92. very close to Jesus. They're intimate

  93. with him. They have immediate access to

  94. him 24/7. They even left their families

  95. because of the power that that um Jesus

  96. showed to follow him. So now Jesus is

  97. telling them, which I think is a little

  98. crazy, and I'm sure you do too, that

  99. he's going to leave them. So let me read

  100. John 16:17.

    John 16:17

  101. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth. It

  102. is to your advantage that I go away. For

  103. if I do not go away, the helper will not

  104. come to you, but if I depart, I will

  105. send him to you. So I think a lot of my

  106. confusion about the Holy Spirit is

  107. because I wasn't relating to him as a

  108. person. But in this verse, as we can

  109. see, the Holy Spirit is referred to as a

  110. hymn. And not just a hymn, but a helper

  111. or a counselor. And for me, this makes

  112. it a little bit easier to relate to the

  113. Holy Spirit. So, going back to the

  114. verse, can you imagine? We are

  115. disciples. We know Jesus so well. We

  116. have always had this immediate access to

  117. him, to his advice and his teachings.

  118. And Jesus looks at us and looks at the

  119. disciples and he says,"I

  120. telling you this is the truth. It's

  121. actually better for you if I leave." And

  122. I'm sure that they felt abandoned. I

  123. know they felt abandoned because as you

  124. go on in John, it says their um their

  125. hearts were full of grief. So Jesus

  126. tells them it's best for them that my

  127. physical body goes. Why would he say

  128. that? He says,"I will send you a helper

  129. to walk alongside of you always." He

  130. sent them his spirit that lives inside

  131. of them and is with them always. So he

  132. traded his physical body so that he's

  133. not limited to time or space or

  134. geography and we have that same access

  135. so that us and the disciples can carry

  136. his presence and his spirit. And in that

  137. verse, he says, "Not only all of that

  138. information, but he's our advantage."

  139. So, we talk a lot in church about how

  140. Jesus is always with us, but technically

  141. after his resurrection, Jesus went back

  142. to be at the right hand of the father

  143. and he's waiting. But God's spirit, his

  144. presence is within us. Our body is a

  145. temple that houses the Holy Spirit. So,

  146. let's think about that. If Jesus walked

  147. into the room today and he said, "Would

  148. you choose the Holy Spirit over sitting

  149. next to me in my physical body?" I don't

  150. think I would. I don't know about you

  151. guys. I don't think I would. But Jesus

  152. would. He said, "That's how important

  153. the Holy Spirit is. I'm choosing this

  154. for you. It's better for you. That's how

  155. big of an advantage it is." So today, I

  156. don't think a lot of us feel like that

  157. was an advantage. I think a lot of us

  158. feel confused. I don't think I'm the

  159. only one in the room that has felt a

  160. little confused about the Holy Spirit

  161. because somewhere along the way, we took

  162. this person and I think that we can make

  163. it a little bit weird. Um, we can

  164. sometimes take what was meant to bring

  165. us power and clarity and we can turn it

  166. into something that makes people want to

  167. run away or maybe makes people feel

  168. uncomfortable. And if the Holy Spirit is

  169. really our advantage, why do so many

  170. believers keep him at a distance?

  171. Usually, I think it's because somewhere

  172. along the way, we've encountered

  173. something. We've had an experience that

  174. was confusing or maybe even a little bit

  175. hurtful or exaggerated, something that

  176. might have felt disingenuine.

  177. So, my next slide is trust him. And

  178. these are my most simple slides because

  179. I want it to be simple. But trusting him

  180. means not letting broken people keep you

  181. from his presence.

  182. >> So why does it get weird? Why does it

  183. sometimes feel fake? Why does it feel

  184. sometimes like a performance? Because

  185. like anything, a good thing can become a

  186. bad thing when people distort it, right?

  187. People are as as Kayla said, pe we are a

  188. group of imperfect people. Am I right?

  189. Can I get a amen? People aren't perfect

  190. and we get it wrong. And I think that

  191. ultimately this is a tactic from the

  192. enemy because if even just one time you

  193. have an experience or a manifestation of

  194. the Holy Spirit that was clouded by

  195. broken people and maybe it felt weird,

  196. it felt a bit uncomfortable, then you

  197. don't want anything to do with him after

  198. that. Maybe you have an example. I'm

  199. sure some of you do about an experience

  200. that you've had that felt that way. I

  201. have an example I'm going to tell you

  202. about today. So maybe every time you

  203. someone mentions the Holy Spirit, you

  204. get a little nervous because you've had

  205. this experience. Back in the day when we

  206. were starting Collective Church, you can

  207. leave that slide up, Mariah. When we

  208. were starting Collective Church, we were

  209. kind of like shopping around. We were at

  210. different buildings trying to figure out

  211. where to call our home. And we had a

  212. prayer service on a Sunday. And I the

  213. the altar was like this way. There's a

  214. coffee bar here. So when you were

  215. getting coffee, you weren't facing the

  216. altar. I was facing the coffee getting

  217. coffee as one does and a woman came up

  218. behind me. She's no longer at this

  219. church or it's not relevant to the

  220. story, but she came up behind me and she

  221. started praying for me. Put her hands on

  222. me very loudly, very emotionally. Um,

  223. and I just kind of stood there cuz I was

  224. literally in the middle of getting my

  225. coffee and I didn't say much. Um, but

  226. she kept praying and she said she kept

  227. repeating herself. Um, that the Holy

  228. Spirit is telling me that you have a

  229. physical problem going on in your body.

  230. Not I don't have a perfect body, but I

  231. knew that I didn't have a physical

  232. illness going on at that time. So, I

  233. just kept quiet and I just didn't say

  234. anything. But, it kept getting more and

  235. more emotional, louder. Um, and then she

  236. said, "The Holy Spirit is telling me

  237. that you have a kidney problem." And I

  238. was like, "I don't I know I don't have a

  239. Should I get checked out? I don't know.

  240. But I didn't have a physical kidney

  241. problem and I knew it. Um, and I didn't

  242. say anything, but I knew that that maybe

  243. wasn't the Holy Spirit talking to her.

  244. Um, she kind of wanted me, it felt like

  245. she was wanting me to match her emotion,

  246. if you know what I mean, or have like an

  247. equally strong reaction, but I didn't

  248. cuz I wasn't feeling that. And she got

  249. it wrong. And and that's okay because we

  250. don't always get it right. But this was

  251. a negative experience with a person.

  252. That's not a negative experience with

  253. the Holy Spirit.

  254. Uh she was a well-meaning person who

  255. just missed it. So I have to remember

  256. this and I want us all to remember this.

  257. The Holy Spirit never gets it wrong.

  258. He's a perfect spirit, but imperfect

  259. people do. And I'm sure that there's a

  260. million stories where people have felt

  261. the Holy Spirit guiding them and got it

  262. exactly right. And it meant a lot. But

  263. one negative experience can outweigh a

  264. million positive, right? So I think when

  265. we have an experience like that, we sort

  266. of want to stay away from the topic. Um

  267. it's just like we don't we don't go over

  268. there. Uh and I have felt that way. I

  269. felt that over this past year. I'm

  270. still, you know, learning to come out of

  271. that. But I was reading this book which

  272. I recommend to all of you. Um which kind

  273. of sparked my desire to go into this

  274. message. It's called The Divine

  275. Counselor by Alex Cely. And in it she

  276. says, "You cannot do the Christian

  277. journey without acknowledging the Holy

  278. Spirit." And as a believer, he has given

  279. us an advantage by his presence within

  280. us. And I don't want to let broken

  281. people get in the way of my relationship

  282. with the Holy Spirit. So as I learn who

  283. he is and I separate those experiences

  284. stemming from people, I have to learn

  285. how do I actually walk with the Holy

  286. Spirit? How do I utilize the advantage

  287. that God has given us? So, as I learn

  288. who he is and I keep moving along, I

  289. have that's my next step. What does it

  290. look like to walk with the Holy Spirit

  291. every day? Uh, and when you hear people

  292. say things like, "I heard the Holy

  293. Spirit tell me or um like along that

  294. line, what does it do?" You sometimes

  295. think, "What does that even mean? Am I

  296. supposed to be hearing an audible voice?

  297. Am I missing something?" And I have

  298. learned over the course of studying and

  299. learning and just being a Christian that

  300. most of the time walking with the Holy

  301. Spirit is much more ordinary than

  302. dramatic experiences.

  303. Sometimes it's reading scripture and

  304. there's just one verse that will not

  305. leave you alone. Sometimes it's just a

  306. gentle conviction before you send a

  307. really angry text message. Sometimes

  308. it's being prompted to send someone an

  309. encouragement and later finding out they

  310. really, really, really needed it when

  311. you sent it. And sometimes it's just a

  312. deep peace even though your

  313. circumstances haven't changed. So

  314. walking with the Holy Spirit is about

  315. learning to recognize his voice in those

  316. ordinary moments. And that's where I

  317. think he begins to do his work. And when

  318. I think about walking with the Holy

  319. Spirit and I get to know him more, I

  320. learn about all of the different roles

  321. that he plays in order to do his work

  322. within us. So, one role that I feel like

  323. the Holy Spirit plays that's vital to

  324. our growth is as our counselor. When I

  325. think about counseling, and I'm sure

  326. many of us have been to counseling, and

  327. it's a gift from God, um I think a lot

  328. of it is about uncovering truths about

  329. ourselves and about the situations we've

  330. been through and then revealing them to

  331. us. And the Bible refers to the Holy

  332. Spirit as the spirit of truth. If we can

  333. pull up John 16, when the Spirit of

  334. truth comes, he will guide you into all

  335. the truth. For he will not speak on his

  336. own authority, but whatever he hears, he

  337. will speak, and he will declare to you

  338. the things that are to come. That's just

  339. one verse. I have one more. 1

    1 Corinthians 2:10

  340. Corinthians 2:10. These things God has

  341. revealed to us through the spirit. For

  342. the spirit searches everything, even the

  343. depths of God. So, I'm going to tell a

  344. story. I'm going to tell a personal

  345. story. I was debating, but I'm going to

  346. go for it. So, when I was in high

  347. school, I had a boyfriend of I'd

  348. honestly all through high school. It was

  349. as serious as a boyfriend in high school

  350. could get. Um, if you know what I mean.

  351. Like, he knew my family. We had all the

  352. same friends. We were very close. I did

  353. think there was a future there. Um, I

  354. was sitting in his basement watching a

  355. movie one night with him and he was not

  356. feeling well. And I just remember he had

  357. a stomach ache and he would have stomach

  358. aches like more often than a than I feel

  359. like was normal for a person. So he went

  360. to the bathroom and I don't know what

  361. had compelled me to do this but I went

  362. into his closet and sitting I told Satie

  363. I was not going to cry during my message

  364. today and I'm not. But sitting on this

  365. is 20 years ago so I shouldn't. But

  366. sitting on his shelf was drugs in his

  367. closet. not like your run-of-the-mill

  368. like uh teenagers smoking marijuana. It

  369. wasn't that type of thing. It was a lot

  370. more serious of um like items that were

  371. used to do the drugs.

  372. Um so I don't really remember what

  373. happened after that, but I do remember

  374. his mom drove me home because we're

  375. still in high school. I could barely

  376. drive. And I just felt so much shame.

  377. Okay.

  378. All right. I just felt so embarrassed. I

  379. felt shame. I felt embarrassed. I felt

  380. like how could I have trusted this

  381. person with I can't believe I'm still

  382. crying 20 years later, guys.

  383. but with with so much like I it was just

  384. I felt so disheartened and broken about

  385. it and honestly it made me question my

  386. own judgment like how could I have

  387. trusted him and why did I trust him um

  388. anyways that story as I moved on to

  389. other relationships clearly it's

  390. affected me but I think I've moved past

  391. it but I was hardened towards trusting

  392. anyone

  393. and I know that there's stories of

  394. trauma in this a million times more

  395. severe or worse than than my experience.

  396. And that's why I want to talk about

  397. this. But it just took like a lot for me

  398. after this to open up. And it wasn't

  399. just in romantic relationships. It was

  400. like anyone like it was hard for me. I

  401. felt I always felt like people would

  402. feel close to me. But I don't I didn't

  403. feel like close to them. Does that is

  404. that hitting anyone? Okay. So my even my

  405. parents, they're not here today, but

  406. they used to joke that of all of my sib

  407. of all of my siblings, there's four of

  408. us, that I was like the emotionally

  409. unavailable one. And I didn't really

  410. like think about it too deeply. I just

  411. thought that that was just me. Like that

  412. was like that's how God made me. That's

  413. part of my personality. Um it just takes

  414. me a little bit longer to trust people.

  415. And that just was how I went on through

  416. life. And I don't even think I tried to

  417. fix the problem because I didn't even

  418. understand it until probably I'm happily

  419. married now for a year, but until

  420. probably before my relationship with my

  421. now husband, I was so guarded. Um, and

  422. and as I said, it bled into other things

  423. in my life. And I couldn't tell you the

  424. moment that I was, okay, now I'm a

  425. trusting person. Now it's so easy for me

  426. to trust people. But in those quiet

  427. moments with him, he gently uncovered my

  428. fears. Uh my he revealed truth to me and

  429. he showed me how my walls were isolating

  430. me and they were keeping me from a

  431. relationship that I wanted from a

  432. relationship where there's deep intimate

  433. trust which produces a type of love I

  434. hadn't felt before. So it wasn't it just

  435. wasn't an issue for me anymore. And

  436. isn't that what a counselor does? He

  437. moves into your areas of brokenness and

  438. he shines a light on them. And he

  439. doesn't just fix them, but better yet,

  440. he shows you how to fix them and how to

  441. be free from them. He's the ultimate

  442. counselor. He knows the fibers of our

  443. being. He knows our deepest traumas, our

  444. deepest sec insecurities and secrets,

  445. the ones that we aren't even aware of,

  446. how they're affecting us still. He

  447. reveals truth. Sometimes that happens

  448. during prayer. Sometimes it's while

  449. you're reading scripture. Sometimes it's

  450. while you're driving to work and you

  451. just suddenly realize what you're

  452. carrying. But once he reveals the truth,

  453. that is not where it ends. Right? You

  454. still have to walk out your healing. And

  455. that's when human counseling comes into

  456. play. There will still be triggers.

  457. People are still going to break my

  458. trust. People are still going to

  459. disappoint me. And I can have systems in

  460. place to better handle that using these

  461. tools. And human counseling, I want to

  462. reiterate, is a gift from God and it

  463. helps us walk out our healing. It's an

  464. incredible tool to be used. But when we

  465. have the ultimate counselor who lives

  466. inside of us and knows every thought,

  467. every fear, why wouldn't we take it to

  468. him first? What a shame if we don't go

  469. to him first. The Holy Spirit often

  470. works through wise counselors, but he

  471. should never be left out of the

  472. conversation.

  473. The Holy Spirit doesn't just expose

  474. what's wrong. He reveals why. In another

  475. way, he doesn't just diagnose our

  476. wounds. He walks with us into healing.

  477. And as he reveals these truths, these

  478. truths, they lead to us. We can't stay

  479. the same once you know certain things

  480. about yourself. They lead to us

  481. changing, to him forming and ultimately

  482. transforming us. Another way that the

  483. Holy Spirit walks with us is he is our

  484. sculptor.

  485. So truth doesn't just stay truth and do

  486. nothing. It leads to transformation. It

  487. leads to us changing. In second

  488. Corinthians the Bible says, "And we all

  489. with unveiled faces reflect the Lord's

  490. glory are being transformed into his

  491. image." I love this part. With

  492. everinccreasing glory which comes from

  493. the Lord who is the spirit. And I like

  494. that this Bible I love the Bible. Don't

  495. we all? But I love that he the the Bible

  496. cho God chose this word unveiled faces.

  497. I I didn't really think much of that

  498. until I was writing my message and then

  499. when I when I put this verse on the

  500. slides, it just came to me. Unveiled

  501. faces to me means like your truest self,

  502. the self-aware selves that have been

  503. revealed all of the truths by the Holy

  504. Spirit. And as we live in this

  505. relationship with him, this back and

  506. forth communication, we watch what

  507. happens. We are being transformed. It's

  508. this complete overhaul of our entire

  509. person from the inside out to a new

  510. state of being, right? We are forming

  511. into his image to become more and more

  512. like Jesus over time. Have you ever

  513. looked back five years and you realized,

  514. I'm a kinder person than I used to be?

  515. or uh I'm slower to anger than I was 5

  516. years ago. I don't panic the way that I

  517. used to. That's the Holy Spirit. That's

  518. the byproduct of the Holy Spirit working

  519. in your life. So, how does how does the

  520. transformation come about though? I

  521. think that that was a big question for

  522. me. Um I think that we see us becoming

  523. more and more like Jesus in a lot of

  524. different ways and at a lot of different

  525. paces, right? So, we're all in a church.

  526. I'm sure that you have seen this happen

  527. and maybe even experienced this. But I

  528. think a lot of trans transformation can

  529. happen through these breakthrough

  530. moments which are these rare unplanned

  531. moments where the Holy Spirit just

  532. accelerates your transformation. And

  533. that I'm talking about like at the altar

  534. or during a moment of worship, a moment

  535. of prayer. What would normally take

  536. years is done in a moment. Um, you might

  537. be set free from addiction. You might

  538. just be set free from a pattern of

  539. thinking that you've had for years. And

  540. I believe in that. We believe in that as

  541. a church. That's why we invite people

  542. forward. Uh, we believe in this. There

  543. are many stories of this in the Bible.

  544. Um, countless. And they but they're more

  545. rare, I would say, and I think everybody

  546. would agree with that. They are more

  547. rare, but they happen. I rarely hear a

  548. breakthrough moment that has brought

  549. about deep character change. I rarely

  550. hear someone who came to the altar, had

  551. a breakthrough moment where used to be

  552. insecure and now they're no longer

  553. insecure or used to be an angry person

  554. and now they never lose their temper. I

  555. I I don't know about you, but I haven't

  556. I've heard rare stories of that, but it

  557. does happen. And I don't want to I want

  558. to be clear. I don't want to shrink your

  559. faith because it does happen. But I

  560. believe that deep character change is

  561. usually the byproduct of walking with

  562. the Holy Spirit. Slowly but surely, we

  563. are changed by walking with him through

  564. a thousand small ordinary moments.

  565. And when we think about character

  566. change, I have to think about the fruit

  567. of the spirit. The kids sing the fruit

  568. of the spirit, but and I don't I

  569. sometimes I miss a couple, but love,

  570. joy, patience, peace, gentleness,

  571. self-control.

  572. Am I missing any?

  573. Kindness, this important one. Um, these

  574. develop over time, right? It's not just

  575. a checklist of traits and it's not a

  576. list of commands. And I think that's an

  577. important distinction. the the fruit of

  578. the spirit or not say be more loving, be

  579. kinder. It's a picture of your inner

  580. disposition changing to be more like

  581. Jesus. I didn't put this verse up, but I

  582. I wanted to include it because I think

  583. it's it's it's relevant. Or maybe I did.

  584. Do we have second? Do we have Galatians

    Galatians 5:24

  585. 5:24? Okay, great. Uh and it says, "And

  586. those who belong to Christ Jesus have

  587. crucified the flesh with its passions

  588. and desires. If we live by the spirit,

  589. let us also keep in step with the

  590. spirit. So there's no commands in this

  591. verse except one thing they're telling

  592. us to do. Keep in step with the spirit.

  593. Walk in the spirit. And the byproduct

  594. will be character that looks like Jesus.

  595. You become a kind person. You become a

  596. loving person. You become joyful. You're

  597. peaceful within any circumstance. You

  598. become faithful. You become patient,

  599. gentle, kind. You are marked by

  600. self-control. These are traits that we

  601. develop. And the fruit of the spirit are

  602. evidence that someone has been walking

  603. with the Holy Spirit. So, we do have a

  604. part to do. We have to create the

  605. conditions in our lives for the Holy

  606. Spirit to do the work to change and

  607. transform us. We don't transform

  608. ourselves, right? But we do cooperate

  609. with what the spirit is doing. And

  610. transformation

  611. always leads us somewhere. We're not

  612. transforming for no reason. So we've

  613. talked about how truth leads to

  614. transformation. But where does

  615. transformation lead us? It leads us to

  616. freedom.

  617. So the third role that I feel like the

  618. Holy Spirit plays in our walk with him

  619. is freedom. He is our liberator. I

  620. didn't love that word because it felt a

  621. little formal, but I couldn't think of

  622. anything better because it's so true. He

  623. is our liberator. Truth leads to

  624. transformation which leads to freedom.

  625. The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 3:17,

    2 Corinthians 3:17

  626. "Now the Lord is the spirit, and where

  627. the spirit of the Lord is, there is

  628. freedom."

  629. The term finding freedom in the Lord, I

  630. don't know if I ever really intimately

  631. related with it to be honest or I didn't

  632. know how to explain what that meant to

  633. me. It I it's a nice term um but I don't

  634. feel like I could define how it relates

  635. to my life really because what does it

  636. mean to be free, right? Freedom to a lot

  637. of us is the ability to do whatever you

  638. want to do whenever you want to do it,

  639. right? But I think it's a lot more

  640. complicated than that. We have things

  641. that we want in this moment, our fleshly

  642. desires. Um, for instance, let's just

  643. say I want to go get a hamburger and

  644. fries after this service.

  645. With some willpower, I could probably

  646. overcome that desire and say no to what

  647. I want in the moment so that I can say

  648. yes to what I really, really want, which

  649. is to be healthy. Right? So long before

  650. this moment of temptation, I can orient

  651. my life in a way that strengthens my

  652. willpower so that I can override these

  653. things that I want to get to my deeper

  654. desires. I could like make sure I don't

  655. go down the street passing fast food or

  656. I could have a good community around me

  657. that keeps reminding Actually, I didn't

  658. have this in my message, but we're doing

  659. a step challenge with the woman.

  660. I I could, you know, have some

  661. accountability in that and I do. I could

  662. have a community that strengthens my

  663. willpower so I can get to what I really

  664. want. So in this way, freedom is not the

  665. ability to do whatever you want or to

  666. give into whatever impulse or desire

  667. that you have at that moment. That's

  668. actually more like slavery.

  669. Freedom is to want the right thing, to

  670. will the right thing, and to overcome

  671. your flesh desires to do the right

  672. thing. But here's the thing.

  673. Strengthening your willpower, learning,

  674. studying, putting the right community,

  675. being in a step challenge, all these

  676. things, changing your influence, it's

  677. never going to be enough. It'll never be

  678. enough. No matter how much willpower you

  679. have, it is never going to be enough to

  680. live like Jesus. Like our end goal is

  681. not just like a really good guy. Our end

  682. goal is Jesus. He's perfect. Willpower

  683. is not going to get you there. as small

  684. changes will help and they're doable on

  685. our willpower alone. But once you bump

  686. up against these deeply ingrained

  687. patterns that go back to generational

  688. trauma that maybe you don't even know

  689. about but your parents do or go back to

  690. addictions that maybe you feel like you

  691. were born with these deeply ingrained

  692. patterns uh and traits that are woven

  693. into who we are deep in your I don't

  694. even deep in your enog or your

  695. MyersBriggs willpower is not going to

  696. cut it for that it's essential to grow

  697. and mature we need willpower. power for

  698. that, but it's not good enough. We need

  699. access to a power that is beyond us, the

  700. Holy Spirit, in order to be transformed,

  701. in order to long for the vision that God

  702. has for us. More than we want the fast

  703. food, more than we want companionship,

  704. even if it's not the right relationship,

  705. more than we want something that's going

  706. to make us happy for an hour, but not

  707. going to make us happy later, or

  708. whatever desire it is we have at that

  709. moment. So willpower is not going to

  710. change your nature. It can modify your

  711. behavior, but it cannot transform your

  712. heart. It changes behavior, but the Holy

  713. Spirit changes your desires. And that's

  714. true freedom. True freedom comes when

  715. the Holy Spirit renews your mind. Like

  716. in Romans when it says, "Do not conform

  717. to the patterns of this world, but be

  718. transformed by the renewing of your

  719. mind." Then you will be able to test.

  720. Listen, this is scripture, not just me

  721. saying really good stuff. But then you

  722. will be able to test and to prove what

  723. God's will is, his good and pleasing and

  724. perfect will. So the Holy Spirit changes

  725. your appetites. He rewires your desires

  726. so that your mind naturally begins to

  727. crave what God craves. You don't have to

  728. force yourself to obey. You want to

  729. obey. You're not chasing after

  730. relationships that look like the last

  731. relationship that caused your trauma,

  732. that caused your patterns because your

  733. flesh desires just to not be lonely

  734. right now. You want what God wants. You

  735. want the relationship God has for you.

  736. I see a lot of new Christians um doing

  737. good things, changing their support

  738. system, changing their influence, and

  739. even changing their habits and lives.

  740. And I can tell that their strengthening

  741. their willpower, but their desires

  742. haven't changed. Their deeply ingrained

  743. patterns haven't changed. And they're

  744. still justifying their sin because we

  745. still want it. We still want it more

  746. than God's plan for us at that moment

  747. because we haven't been transformed yet.

  748. And that's why we're walking with the

  749. Holy Spirit.

  750. Corinthians 3:17 says, "The Lord is the

  751. spirit and where the spirit of the Lord

  752. is, there is freedom." And this is God's

  753. version of freedom. It's the presence of

  754. a person. It's the Holy Spirit running

  755. your mind. So you're finally be able to

  756. you're finally able to be free to be who

  757. you were made to be to want the right

  758. things. That's freedom. When your

  759. desires match up with God's desires. And

  760. why? Why do we need to be transformed?

  761. What are we doing with it? We're doing

  762. it to point to Jesus. And this one's

  763. actually pretty simple. The Holy Spirit

  764. doesn't transform us just so we are

  765. impressive Christians that people really

  766. want to be around. All of our

  767. transformation has a purpose.

  768. Transformed people become witnesses. The

  769. Holy Spirit transforms us so that we can

  770. point to Jesus.

  771. Acts 18 says, "But you will receive

  772. power when the Holy Spirit comes on you,

  773. and you will be my witnesses in

  774. Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and

  775. to the ends of the earth.

  776. So, it seems pretty simple. The whole

  777. goal is to make us better at pointing

  778. people to Jesus, to be his witness. The

  779. Holy Spirit gives us love, joy, all of

  780. the fruits of the spirit we just talked

  781. about, peace, patience, kindness,

  782. self-control, not as a badge of honor

  783. for us to brag about, but as tools to be

  784. used for him. Some days, I can promise

  785. you, you're going to need that patience.

  786. And other days, you're going to need

  787. wisdom. And other days, you're going to

  788. need healing. But to be a witness, we

  789. have to have experienced it. If you went

  790. to court and you were a witness, and you

  791. said, "Hm, I haven't I didn't see the

  792. crime." You'd probably not be a very

  793. good witness for that court, right? To

  794. be his witness, we have to witness his

  795. goodness in us. We have to witness his

  796. ability to form us and ultimately

  797. transform our lives so that we can be

  798. witnesses to others.

  799. Your neighbors don't need another person

  800. who just knows a lot of Bible verses.

  801. They need someone whose life has been

  802. changed and who has been transformed.

  803. I can't witness a freedom that I have

  804. never experienced.

  805. And I can't introduce people to someone

  806. that I don't know.

  807. So maybe today you have kept your

  808. distance from the Holy Spirit because of

  809. a confusing experience. Maybe you've

  810. been relying on your own willpower

  811. trying to become a more patient, loving,

  812. self-controlled person. Or maybe you've

  813. just never thought of the Holy Spirit as

  814. a person who actually wants to walk with

  815. you every single day.

  816. I I still don't think I understand

  817. everything about the Holy Spirit, but I

  818. know him a lot more than I did a few

  819. months ago. And isn't that like most

  820. relationships? We don't really

  821. understand someone fully until we're

  822. walking with them.

  823. We don't recognize their voice as often

  824. until we're spending time with them,

  825. listening to them. And over time, you

  826. come to know him more deeply.

  827. Learning to recognize the Holy Spirit is

  828. a lot like learning someone's voice. The

  829. more time you spend with him in

  830. scripture and in prayer, the more

  831. familiar his leading your life will

  832. become.

  833. Uh, and I think that's what the Holy

  834. Spirit is inviting me and you into. Not

  835. a perfect understanding,

  836. not even a dramatic experience today.

  837. And not trying harder to become a better

  838. Christian, but just walking with them.

  839. He wasn't leaving the disciples.

  840. He was making himself available to

  841. everyone. And we have that same access.

  842. That's our advantage.

  843. So, I don't want to do an altar call

  844. today, but I want to take one minute

  845. where we all stand up for a second and

  846. we're just going to take a minute of

  847. stillness

  848. where we

  849. we hold out our hands like you're

  850. receiving a gift and we close our eyes

  851. and we just listen.

  852. Holy Spirit, what are you saying to me

  853. today? And don't feel like you have to

  854. force it. Just be still. And if there's

  855. a scripture that comes to mind, a person

  856. that comes to mind, an area of your

  857. life, or even a conviction, just receive

  858. it.

  859. God, I thank you for loving us enough

  860. that you didn't leave us on our own.

  861. Thank you for sending the Holy Spirit to

  862. live within us, to guide us, to comfort

  863. us, and to transform us. Holy Spirit,

  864. forgive us for when we have ignored your

  865. voice, for when we've relied on our own

  866. strength or our own willpower, or if

  867. we've allowed other people's mistakes to

  868. keep us from knowing you.

  869. God, I ask you today to shape us into

  870. people that look more like you. Don't

  871. just change our behaviors, but change

  872. our desires.

  873. Change our hearts. God, teach us to love

  874. what you love, to pursue what you

  875. pursue, and to find true freedom in

  876. following you. And as we leave here

  877. today, would you remind us that you are

  878. with us, your presence is within us,

  879. God. And I pray that every morning we

  880. would wake up and our first prayer would

  881. be Holy Spirit, walk with me.

  882. Walk with me today.

  883. Amen.

  884. Hey, thanks so much for watching today's

  885. message. Our prayer is more than the

  886. words that were spoken in the message

  887. that you would remember the things that

  888. God spoke to your heart.

  889. >> Yeah. And no matter what it was that God

  890. spoke to you, I know that part of your

  891. journey is other people being in a

  903. of you.

  904. Give me.
