How many of you guys are excited to be in God's house today?

Awesome, awesome, awesome.

I really don't want to take up a lot of time, but um I want to introduce not just a good friend of mine, but someone that I appreciate and love and respect very, very much.

Uh, Pastor Sean Cooper, pastors uh Vertical Chapel Church in Kyle, Texas, which is um right near Austin.

But he's traveled to be here with us today with his lovely wife Elisa, and uh I'll let you tell a little bit more about that.

But I would just like to say how much it means to us that you guys are here.

You helped to lead us very well, and uh that means the world to us.

And uh, would you guys help me welcome Pastor Sean to the stage?

Come on.

Come on, what's up, Relay Church?

Do you love Jesus?

Come on, are you ready for the word of God today?

Well, listen, it would be amiss if I didn't take a minute just to celebrate and honor two groups of people.

Number one, uh pastors Matt and Sarah Keller, our pastors, and we're so thankful.

They lead a network called the Next Level Relational Network.

And so my wife and I get the honor and the privilege to kind of carry their heart and vision into different rooms.

And so we're so thankful that we got to meet some people along the way, and so I'm thankful that pastors have pastors, everybody.

Amen.

Because pastors need pastors, but also I want to honor your amazing people.

All right, here we go.

There's there's rules in this house, everybody.

We're all learning.

Thank you.

Aren't you thankful for your pastors?

So let me take a minute just to tell you why I want to honor them.

The Bible is very clear that those who labor in the word are worthy of double honor.

But here's what I really want you to know: it is easy to honor people who are honorable.

And it's easy for God to entrust things to people who are trustworthy.

And that is exactly who your pastors are.

And so if you're thankful for God's goodness, that he would love you so much that he would put people like this in your life to love you, serve you, pray for you, and help lead you into the deep things of God.

Come on, one, two, three, can we thank God and honor your pastors today?

We love you guys.

So thankful for what God is going to do.

Uh, listen, it would be a miss though, if I didn't introduce to you my family.

I think we got a picture on the screen.

Uh, this is my crew, everybody.

And I'm gonna start with my wife, Pastor Elisa.

She's a little holy in a little hood.

Come on, somebody.

She's sweet, but she will cut you.

You know what I mean?

She is my Puerto Rican striker, my better half.

I love her dearly.

And together we get the honor and privilege to lead Vertical Chapel, as Pastor Sean said.

We have three kiddos.

Uh, our oldest is 19.

He's here at the bottom.

His name is Leighton John.

God is calling him into full-time ministry, everybody.

So he is following God's call on his life.

And then up here at the top, laughing with me.

This is London Avery.

Uh, this is our middle.

She is a fireball for Jesus.

She is a worshiper, she is a deep well in the things of God.

And then, lastly, at the bottom there, that is our only Texas baby.

Her name is Lola Bell.

We had to give her a Texas name, hence Belle.

Come on, somebody.

And she just got water baptized two and a half months ago.

God is moving in her life.

And uh, I'm just so grateful to be here.

And I do believe that I am on assignment by God and that God has a word for us today.

And here's what I want you to do.

I know that I might be unfamiliar to you, but you are familiar with the word of God.

You are familiar with the presence of God.

So I want you to holler back today.

I want you to preach back today.

Let's get happy in church.

Come on, somebody.

Let's get excited about the word of God.

And so before we dive in, come on, let's pray one more time.

Get our hearts ready for what God wants to do in us.

So, Father, we love you.

We honor you, God.

We bless your name.

We thank you, Lord God, for your word.

We believe it's living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword.

Oh, God, we are privileged people to hear it, but we want to go beyond conviction today.

We want to meet what the Spirit of the Lord is saying with faith and obedience.

So, God, would you shape us, mold us, refine us into the image of Christ?

And right now, come on, would you make this your prayer?

God, I predecide right now.

Whatever you say, my answer is yes.

And so, Lord, even now I step out of me and I step into you.

Because I know, God, if we hear from me, we might be encouraged.

But if we can hear from you, we'll be transformed.

So, God, have your way.

We love you, we honor you, we bless you, and we ask all of this in the matchless, all-powerful, the one and only, most beautiful name of Jesus.

Come on, and if you're with me, can we give Jesus the highest praise, everybody?

Come on.

Can we give them the highest praise?

Well, the title of my message today is storyteller.

And maybe you've never actually thought about it, but God is a storyteller.

Even Jesus himself often preached in stories, we call them parables.

Maybe you've never thought about this, but Genesis all the way to Revelation is one meta-narrative story that all points to one central figure.

His name is Jesus.

He is the name above every name.

At the name of Jesus, one day every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

Amen.

And then even biblical language, Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic.

What's interesting about this particular language is it can express an entire story with a single word.

God is a storyteller.

We might enjoy facts, but we remember stories.

There is something powerful about stories that shape us, that shape our walk with God, that shape our walk as a faith community as we grow together.

Psalm 107, verse 2 says this let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story.

Psalms 107:2

God says, here's what I want for those who have been redeemed, by those who have been ransomed by the blood of Jesus, for those who have been washed and clean and purified and restored back into right relationship with my Father.

I want you to get loud about what I've done in your life.

We get excited about so many things.

Come on, we go to a place, we get some good tacos, we want to talk about the tacos.

We start baptizing chips and queso.

Glory to God, that's where the anointing is.

Come on.

We want to tell everybody about that new lunch spot.

Come on, we want to talk about football.

We want to talk about all of these things, but can I tell you we've got something way better to shout about?

It is the name that is above every name, Jesus Christ.

And we got to get excited, everybody.

We should be the most excited people on the planet.

We should be the most thankful people on the planet.

I know culture is loud.

Let the body of Christ rise up with a praise and let's drown out the noise of the enemy.

Come on, look to your neighbor and say, He's talking about you.

Come on, tell him he's talking about you.

Look to your other neighbor, the one who didn't sing well during worship, and just say, Man, I feel like this message is right for you.

This, this one.

AW Tozer says it this way: what's closest to your heart is what you talk about.

And if God is close to your heart, you will talk about him.

We talk about the things that are important to us.

And I've come from Austin, Texas to remind us that we're not simply Christians, we're not simply people that once upon a time called upon the name of Jesus and got radically saved.

No, no, he's called us to be storytellers.

And this world is desperate for the story of Jesus.

And so if you have your Bibles, turn to Psalm 40, Psalm 40.

And I just want to encourage you, bring your Bible to church.

I understand there's a little bit of fear with that because you're thinking, oh man, the pastor's gonna tell me to turn somewhere.

I'm not gonna know where it is.

I don't know if you guys know this, but there's this amazing tool at the beginning of the Bible called a table of contents.

Come on, somebody.

And we just need to squash fear and not allow the enemy to keep us away from the word of God.

Amen.

And so I'm gonna read it and we're gonna break it down together, starting in verse one.

I waited patiently for the Lord.

And he turned to me and he heard my cry, and he lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and the mire, and he set my feet up on the rock.

Notice this, and he gave me a firm place to stand.

And then he put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God, and many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in him.

God has called us to be storytellers.

But if we're gonna do that well, we need to actually understand three things.

Here's the first one if you're taking notes, write it down.

If you weren't planning to take notes, come on, everybody.

I came from Austin, Texas.

Write it down.

Here it is.

We need to understand our story.

If we're going to be storytellers of God's goodness, then we need to understand what our story is and what our story isn't.

Look again at verse one.

I waited patiently.

Come on, say patiently.

I waited patiently for the Lord, David says, and he turned to me and he heard my cry.

Come on, how many are thankful that when you were lost and broken and helpless, you called upon the name of Jesus and he heard your cry.

Okay, listen, that was the dress rehearsal.

I'm gonna ask the question again.

This time you're gonna get happy in church and excited that when you called upon the name of Jesus, he didn't give you the wrath of God, he gave you mercy and grace upon grace.

How many are thankful that when you called upon the name of Jesus, he met you with the mercy and the goodness of God.

Here's what I'm saying, church.

I can't fully know the goodness of God until I know the badness of me.

I can't fully know the good news until I ultimately know the bad news.

And David is helping us understand the bad news.

I was broken, I was lost, I was rebellious, pay attention, I did not make mistakes, I intentionally violated God's holy standard.

I said to God, I don't want you in my life, I want to build my own narrative.

Isaiah 53, 6 says this, all of us, not some of us, all of us, like sheep, have strayed away and we have left God's path to follow our own.

Yet the Lord laid on Jesus the sins of all of us.

Come on, are you thankful that Jesus became the atoning sacrifice for my sin and for your sin?

In high school, I had a best friend.

His name was Cliff Notes.

Come on, somebody.

How many of you know about him?

I didn't have time to read books this big.

Come on, give me the shortened version.

What are Cliff Notes?

Cliff Notes gives you the overarching understanding of the story without the unnecessary details.

And I just want to remind us this morning of the Cliff Notes of our lives.

Write down this first one.

Our story is part of God's story.

See, see, we're born into sin and selfishness, and we think it's our story.

And God goes, no, no, no, no.

I'm writing a story.

And I'm actually inviting you into my story, but we often think, no, no, no, we're inviting God into our story.

God goes, no, no, I'm writing a story.

I'm writing a narrative.

I am doing a work in the earth.

I am speaking things into creation, and everything that I speak into creation is to give me glory.

God is writing a story, and we are part of God's story number two.

Here it is.

We wrote chapters in our sin.

God was writing a story, and we said, God, no, no, no, no.

I want the pencil.

I don't want you to write my story.

I want to write my own story.

I want to forge my own chapters.

I want to chart out my own journey.

God, I don't need you speaking into the areas of my life.

No, no, no, no.

I've got the pencil.

And here's what I need you to understand, church.

God can't write your story if you're holding his pencil.

But by the grace of God, number three, here it is.

God is rewriting our story by his grace.

That moment where you say, okay, God, I'm done running.

I'm done trying to be in charge.

I'm done trying to control my life.

I surrender the pencil to you.

I surrender my life to you.

Now take it.

Do with it what you will.

And anywhere you tell me to go, I'll go.

And what you tell me to say, I'll say.

And what you tell me to do, I'll do.

Why?

Because I'm no longer living for my glory, I'm living for yours.

God, take it all.

And so what does it mean if those first three things are true?

And they are, write down this fourth one.

Our story then is ultimately the gospel story.

I remember when I flipped my car twice and I hit a tree and I woke up in the hospital.

I was completely hammered, a million miles away from God.

It was everything I could do to find things in the world to try to fill a void in my heart, not realizing that the shape of that void was the shape of Jesus.

And I was rebelling and I was running and I consumed so much alcohol, so much of that night, I don't even remember to this day.

All I know is somehow, somehow, I got my keys out of my buddy's jacket.

I walked three blocks.

I got into the car.

It was about a 25-minute drive home.

I made it home about three-quarters of the way.

I pass out going 140 kilometers.

I'm from Canada, everybody.

140 kilometers.

And the police say I flipped the car twice, hit a tree.

They had to cut me out with the jaws of life.

And I woke up in the hospital.

And even though I was completely intoxicated, I was also spiritually sober.

And just when I thought I was gonna get met with the wrath of God, mercy walked into that room.

And I start weeping.

I said to Jesus, Take the pencil.

There's any value in my life, if there's anything in here that can be redeemed for your glory, take it.

It's yours.

Here's what I need you to write down religion is the story of us finding God, but the gospel is the story of God finding us.

God doesn't become part of your equation, God redeems your life and makes you new.

Now your life becomes about Jesus.

We've got to understand what our story is.

Number two, write it down.

We need to embrace even the messy parts.

Come on, we all have chapters.

We we all have details, things that we wish we could suppress.

Some of us even tempted to numb, pretend like it's not there, like we want to erase it.

We're ashamed of it.

God, I don't even want that attached to my story.

And here's what I came from Austin, Texas to tell you that some of your greatest scars are some of God's greatest trophies.

There are broken places in your life, just like there were broken places in David's life, but I'm so thankful that David does not hide the broken chapters.

Look again, he lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and the mire, and he set my feet up on the rock, and he gave me a firm place to stand.

What is David doing?

David is going back to the messy chapters.

Guys, God doesn't mix words.

God is perfectly calculated in everything he says.

And David goes, Hey, I'm not gonna hide the broken chapters.

No, I'm gonna tell you he found me in the slimy pit, in the mud and the mire, aka my life was jacked up.

Do you see the three descriptions?

Oh, by the way, each of these descriptions communicates the power of the gospel.

Do you see it?

Slimy represents no matter how hard I try, I can't climb myself out.

Mud represents, no matter how hard I try, I can't make myself clean.

Mire represents no matter how hard I try, I can't get myself free.

These are the messy chapters.

And I've come to give you some good news today.

Write it down.

Messy chapters number one.

Don't need erasing.

And here's what we do we go, okay, God, I'm not gonna take the pencil back.

You keep the pencil because I surrendered that, but I'm gonna go get an eraser.

And this one is for big, big mistakes.

Come on, somebody.

And we go, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

No, no, no, no, no.

I know God's grace is sufficient, but there's some things in my past.

Oh no, no, no.

I know his mercy is made new every morning, but there are some, no, no, no, no, no.

Messy chapters don't need erasing.

Why?

Number two, write it down.

Because messy chapters don't define you.

Listen to me, sin doesn't define you, Jesus does.

That abortion doesn't define you, Jesus does.

That divorce doesn't define you, Jesus does.

That thing that you wish you could go back and do differently, even though you are powerless to go back and do it over, it does not define you, Jesus does.

Jesus is over all things, therefore, he gets the final word in all things.

Come on, if you're thankful, give Jesus the highest praise right now.

So if messy chapters don't need erasing because messy chapters don't define you, then the third is true.

Messy chapters don't conclude your story.

Oh, come on, God's still writing.

Louis Giglio says it this way: Our scars are a witness to the world.

They are part of our story.

Healed wounds are symbols that God has restored us.

This is the reason I can preach out of my brokenness.

I don't mean like that thing that I did seven years ago.

I mean that thing that I did on Tuesday.

Why is there a freedom to preach even out of my brokenness?

Because I know that my brokenness doesn't define me unless I allow it to.

I've got to understand the power of resurrection strength that lives in the inside of me, the same power that rose Christ from the grave.

I've got to understand the power of the gospel.

And some of you, listen to me, you are walking around like a victim in a war that Jesus Christ has already won.

And you are wondering, when am I gonna get free?

And Jesus is declaring over to you, it is for freedom that God has set you free.

Well, why do I feel stuck?

Because you have to learn how to walk in freedom.

There is a process, there is a transformational work of the Holy Spirit on the inside of us.

Write this down.

God turns your mess into your ministry.

Okay, I got a half of amen on that.

Listen to me.

Here's what I'm saying.

I wrote it down because I don't want to get it wrong.

I don't care if it's addiction, divorce, miscarriage, pornography, depression, uh, parenting, uh, regret, grief, cancer, doubt, resentment, pride, or prison.

You fill in the blank.

Here's what I'm telling you.

God can use your story to help someone turn a page in theirs.

God can use your experience to give wisdom to someone's situation.

God can use your past pain to heal someone's present hurt.

God can use your mistakes to keep someone else from repeating them.

I don't think you really understand today, so I'm gonna go deeper.

God can turn your mess into your ministry, God turns your misery into your message, God turns your wounds into your witness, God turns your scars into your story, God turns your regrets into your relatability, God turns your tests into testimonies, God turns your ditches into declaration, God turns your brokenness into beauty from ashes.

Some of you are redeemed and you're still trying to hide things in your past.

God says, No, no, no, the only reason you have need to hide if you don't believe you're fully restored.

Because the work I did in you is sufficient, and I want to use those things in your life to showcase how good and gracious and faithful and powerful and sufficient I am.

I want you to write this down.

Your story is beautiful because Jesus is the main character.

Because Jesus is the main character.

Okay.

I'm firing you up.

Here comes a challenge.

You are not the main story, main character of your story.

God is trying to break a selfishness off of your life.

AW Tozer says we can be sure of this, that God does not put his Holy Spirit in someone and allows him or her to live like the world.

See, when we fully understand the grace of God, we understand the cost of that type of oil.

It brings us to what the Bible says is a contrite spirit.

A contrite spirit means this.

To become entirely broken for our sin.

Not condemned, broken.

We come to a place where we realize none of this is about me.

Church isn't about me.

Worship isn't about me.

My life has actually been redeemed for one purpose.

That through this relationship that has now been restored, the power of the blood of Jesus, and the power of the Spirit of God, I can now live my life to glorify him.

And I promise you this that when you step over that threshold and you come to a place where you acknowledge that life isn't about you, but it's about the glory of God, it is then and only then will you be truly fulfilled in Christ.

If I don't believe this is true, then I won't live like it's true.

If I don't believe this is true, I can't walk in the fullness of Christ.

If I don't believe this is true, I can't walk in the power of the Holy Spirit.

If I don't believe this is true, then I can't have this peace that surpasses all understanding, guarding my heart and my mind in Christ Jesus.

If I don't believe this is true, then I will never truly know the joy that Nehemiah says, let the joy of the Lord be my strength.

If I don't believe this is true, even though I have anything that can redeem my life, sanctify my life, I will continue to look out there.

Listen to me.

The goal is not to avoid sin, the goal is to get as close to Jesus as I can possibly get.

And then when I am fulfilled in Christ, I will lose my appetite for the things of the flesh.

Come on, don't clap them like it's PGA tour.

Come on.

Go, cowboys, everybody.

It was going so well.

You talk about chucking a hand grenade in a room.

Wow.

We're gonna talk about maturity here in a minute.

Come on, we need to know our story.

We need to embrace even the messy parts.

Here's the third and final one.

We need to share it before it's too late.

Do you realize the urgency of the hour that we're living in?

Do you realize that Jesus is awakening his church for his return?

Can I ask you something?

Will you endure till the end?

Jesus says, He who endures to the end will be saved.

Jesus says, I'm coming.

Will you have enough oil in your lamp to make the journey?

I really feel a conviction in my spirit to say this.

The days of lukewarm faith are far behind us.

They will not sustain.

I can't tell you how important it is to get their covering, to get plugged into this house, to get planted into this house, to get in a group, go through freedom, take all of the steps necessary so that you have oil in your lamp.

Come on, amen.

Amen.

Here we go.

Verse 3.

He put a new song in my mouth.

Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in him.

Okay.

Notice what he says.

He put a new song where?

Interesting, because you would think it would be more churchy to say, He put it in my heart.

He put this new song in my heart.

Why my mouth?

Here's why.

God put a song of salvation in my mouth is because he intends me to share it with others.

I have a responsibility to steward this story.

And Jesus says in John 9, 4, we must quickly carry out the tasks assigned us by the one who sent us.

Why?

Night is coming, and then no one can work.

I remember one day I sent my wife and our two girls to H E B.

Come on, somebody.

H E B, let's go.

Let's go.

And I'm like, man, it's taken them a long time.

I'm trying to figure out what's going on.

And then about three hours later, they get home, and Lola, my youngest, walks in the house like this.

I'm never going to the store with mom.

Again, and I'm like, girl, what's what's going on?

She goes, Mom has to pray with everyone.

That three people, not small prayers, long prayers.

I'm like, what were you doing?

She was like, I was just staring at the cereal.

And I chuckled, but I said, Lola, you should thank God that you have a mom who understands the significance of the redemption story that she carries and the urgency of the hour that we're living in.

I pray that we would live on mission to the point where every day we would say, Holy Spirit, who can I share what you have done in my life with today?

Who can I testify to today?

So let me just tell you, Mark 16, 15 says this.

Then Jesus said to them, So whatever, wherever you go in the world, notice this, tell everyone the good news.

I want to give you five things in closing.

Number one is this faith is personal, not private.

Okay, don't please please don't just say amen.

I really want you to think about that.

It is personal.

How God met us is personal.

What God has done in our lives is personal.

He has touched broken places of us that nobody else has ever touched.

It is personal, but it's not private.

We are the light of the world, everybody.

A city on the hill cannot be hidden.

Number two, write it down.

Sharing our faith is actually a commandment.

There are two great commissions.

One in Matthew, therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I commanded you.

And then here in Mark, where God goes, hey, wherever you go, go and share the good news.

Same commission, different language.

And here's what's happened in the church today.

We've treated it like the great suggestion, not the great commission.

Oh no, God, that's for the pastors.

No, they're gonna tell people about Jesus.

Here's the problem God put the song of salvation in your mouth.

Number three, write it down.

Our mission is wherever our feet are.

Oh, that means your school, young person, that's your mission field.

Your sports team, that's your mission field.

Hey, mom and dad, your workplace, that's your mission field.

H E B in the serial aisle, come on, somebody, that's your mission field.

Number four, here's what I want you to know.

God will always do the heavy lifting.

God will always do the heavy lifting.

I think sometimes we don't want to share our story because here's the fear.

What if somebody asks me a question and I don't know how to answer?

Here's what I need you to understand is you don't have to know everything, you just need to direct them to the one who does.

Hey, I don't have all the answers.

All I know I was lost and now I'm found.

I was blind, but now I see.

Just come.

Come with me to church.

See for yourself.

God will always do the heavy lifting.

Number five, we're done.

Here's what we must remember: that only souls will matter in the end.

Listen to me.

That white picket fence, as meaningful as it is to you, it will not matter in the end.

Where people spend eternity is the only thing that matters.

Every head bow, every eye closed.

Come on, I want to give you just a minute.

I did not come all the way from Austin, Texas to play church today.

I came to deliver a word.

I'm not gonna bait and switch you, and I'm not gonna make anything overly comfortable for you.

God's not looking for fans, he's looking for followers.

Come on, if you know today that you need to get right with God, that if this were the last day you had, you know you would not be ready.

There is not oil in your lamp.

But you say, Pastor Sean, I know the Spirit of God is working on my life, and I'm done holding this pencil.

Maybe there was even a time I gave God the pencil, but I've taken it back.

But I surrender everything, and I want to get right with the Lord today.

If that's you, I want you to put your hand up and say, Pastor Sean, I'm truly giving my life to Jesus.

I see that hand.

Come on.

If your hand is up, I just want you to look at me.

I'm really proud of you.

It takes boldness to make a genuine decision to say, Jesus, take everything.

Come on, is there anybody else?

You know that maybe you've even said, I'm saved, but the fruit of Christ is not being developed in my life.

I'm not really walking in intimacy with God.

Here's what we're gonna do we're gonna pray together.

And I want you to say this out loud.

And if you're truly willing to give your life to Jesus, I want you to know you're not surrendering a moment, you're surrendering your life.

This is not an emotional thing.

This is saying, Jesus, from this day forward, I choose to follow you.

No matter the cost, no turning back.

I live now for the glory of God.

Take the pencil, write my story, and I will tell your story to the world.

Come on, everybody, would you just stand to your feet right now?

Lift your hands to the Lord.

I just want to pray that I'm done.

Come on, lift your hands to Jesus.

I want you to just take 10 seconds just to tell God thank you.

Being patient, kind, gracious.

I don't deserve it.

So, Father, I pray for those right now who are making a decision to surrender their lives to Jesus.

Lord, your word is clear that if you confess with your mouth that Christ is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

So to confess you with my mouth means I repent.

I repent, God.

I didn't make mistakes, I sinned against you.

And now I give you the pencil.

Take it.

I believe in my heart that you were raised from the grave, and I know that I need a resurrection.

If I don't believe that Jesus was raised from the grave, I can't believe He can raise me.

I know the gospel is true.

Take my life and let me live every day for that day for your glory.

In Jesus' name I pray.

And all God's people say amen.

Come on, give Jesus the highest praise.

What a word.

Wow.

If that word got to your heart, would you just say amen?

Come on.

That was such a good word.

I'm gonna be chewing on that one all week.

Let's do something before we close.

I want to invite the prayer team to join me at the front.

If you came today and you just you got something that you just need to bring to the altar, you need to have someone agree with you by faith.

I want to tell you this, it doesn't matter what the issue is, and it might just be an unspoken thing, maybe financial thing, or a relational thing, or a job thing, family thing, marriage, parent life, all the things.

Sometimes we just need to say, God, I believe you can take care of this and invite him into the middle of that situation and then watch him move.

Here's what we're gonna do as we worship before we dismiss.

I just want to invite you down to pray with the they're ready to pray.
