  1. All right. Well, great to be with you

  2. all this morning. Um, for those of you

  3. who've been following along, we're now

  4. almost at the end of the book of

  5. Ephesians. We're going to finish right

  6. before Easter.

  7. And of course, if you've read the book

  8. of Ephesians, you know that in chapter 6

  9. is the always popular, always

  10. interesting spiritual warfare chapter.

  11. And when I use that phrase spiritual

  12. warfare or spiritual

  13. conflict with the demonic,

  14. I'm sure different things happen in

  15. different hearts around the room.

  16. It's probably good to just acknowledge

  17. at the outset that spiritual warfare in

  18. the Christian life is often engaged from

  19. the place of two equal and opposite

  20. errors. There are people who learn about

  21. spiritual warfare and it becomes this

  22. all-consuming thing that they get really

  23. into and really interested in.

  24. Everything comes down to what is the

  25. devil doing and what are the the demons

  26. doing and they see the devil and

  27. everything and everything that happens

  28. to them is the consequence of some

  29. demonic intervention in their life and

  30. as a result

  31. they never learn to grow.

  32. They never grow in spiritual maturity.

  33. They never learn to deeply repent. They

  34. never focus on becoming stronger in the

  35. spirit of God by the strength that the

  36. Lord supplies. They only ever look

  37. outside of themselves for the reasons

  38. for their struggles and their spiritual

  39. problems. That's one error. The other

  40. error is in the opposite direction to

  41. think that to be totally rationalistic

  42. about the world that there is no

  43. spiritual forces at work that there is

  44. no demonic influence happening in and

  45. around us. There is no dark forces at

  46. work seeking to oppose the works of God

  47. and the workers of God in the world.

  48. And as a result, when you look at the

  49. world through that lens, it's much

  50. easier for you to fall prey to many of

  51. these things that scripture warns us

  52. about. When you don't have your guard

  53. up, you can fail to recognize when

  54. you're being led astray by a half truth.

  55. Something that's sort of true, just not

  56. all the way true. And it can be twisted

  57. into something dark and destructive.

  58. People who don't ever think about this

  59. aren't sensitive to the subtle

  60. temptations and voices within our

  61. culture around us that accuse us or

  62. oppress us or seeks to scare us because

  63. they're never suspicious of the origin

  64. or the nature of these messages.

  65. Paul in our text today is going to

  66. refuse to participate in either one of

  67. those errors. He does not want to

  68. overstate the influence of demonic

  69. realities, but neither does he want to

  70. shy away from it.

  71. Paul does not want everything to become

  72. about your battle with dark powers at

  73. work in the world. And at the same time,

  74. he expects you to fully understand and

  75. embrace that they're a real thing that

  76. have a real effect on your actual life.

  77. And you need to be prepared to engage it

  78. by the power of God.

  79. But here's the good news about all this.

  80. This warning about spiritual well

  81. warfare

  82. does not come with a tone of fear or

  83. panic

  84. or any such thing. It comes with the

  85. assurance of hope. And that hope is the

  86. main point of my message today. Main

  87. point. All you need, all you need for

  88. spiritual warfare is yours in Christ.

  89. Everything you need to withstand the

  90. devil is yours in Christ. So stand firm.

  91. Please open your Bibles to Ephesians

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  92. chapter 6 10.

  93. If we can just take a moment, let me

  94. remind us of where we're at in the flow

  95. of thought in this letter.

  96. Over the last few months, Paul has been

  97. systematically unpacking for us what the

  98. gospel fleshed out in a human life is

  99. supposed to look like.

  100. He has helped us connect gospel

  101. realities to our desire for unity, to

  102. our pursuit of holiness. He's helped us

  103. see that the example of God in Christ

  104. shows us that we ought to live an

  105. othersoriented

  106. life focused on giving rather than

  107. receiving.

  108. We're supposed to take this attitude

  109. into our marriages, into our

  110. relationship with our parents, into our

  111. workplace.

  112. Our

  113. whole existence is meant to be directly

  114. impacted by our union with the risen

  115. Lord Jesus. And because we're united to

  116. Christ, we are to walk in love as God in

  117. Christ has loved us. We're to be full of

  118. the spirit, the spirit whom he has

  119. given, submitting to one another out of

  120. reverence to Christ.

  121. But now that he's set in order this

  122. extremely positive, this very grand,

  123. helpful vision for what life in Christ

  124. is supposed to look like, Paul is

  125. basically closing this letter by

  126. reminding us that there's more going on

  127. here than just this corporate call to

  128. holiness that we've received.

  129. There are also enemies.

  130. There are also opponents.

  131. There are creatures in places that we

  132. can't see and they are working toward

  133. our destruction.

  134. So that being said, let's now humble our

  135. minds and open our hearts for the

  136. reading of the word of God, beginning in

  137. Ephesians chapter 6:10

  138. through 18. The first part of verse 18.

  139. Finally,

  140. be strong in the Lord and in the

  141. strength of his might. Put on the whole

  142. armor of God that you may be able to

  143. stand against the schemes of the devil.

  144. For we do not wrestle against flesh and

  145. blood, but against the rulers, against

  146. the authorities, against the cosmic

  147. powers over this present darkness,

  148. against the spiritual forces of evil in

  149. the heavenly places.

  150. Therefore, take up the whole armor of

  151. God that you may be able to withstand in

  152. the evil day, and having done all to

  153. stand firm.

  154. Stand therefore, having fastened on the

  155. belt of truth, and having put on the

  156. breastplate of righteousness, and as

  157. shoes for your feet, having put on the

  158. readiness given by the gospel of peace,

  159. in all circumstances, take up the shield

  160. of faith, with which you can extinguish

  161. all the flaming darts of the evil one,

  162. and take the helmet of salvation and the

  163. sword of the spirit, which is the word

  164. of God, praying at all times in the

  165. spirit with all prayer and supplication.

  166. This is the word of God. God, help us to

  167. see things as you see them and to attend

  168. to them with the degree of focus that

  169. you find fitting for our time and place.

  170. Amen.

  171. Okay. We're going to look at three

  172. things from this text. We're going to

  173. look at the strength of spiritual

  174. warfare. We're going to look at the

  175. characters involved in spiritual

  176. warfare. We're going to close by

  177. thinking together about the armor of God

  178. for spiritual warfare. So let's start

  179. with the strength of spiritual warfare.

  180. Look down at verse 10 and 11 and

  181. consider what they're saying.

  182. First, we are told to be strong. Be

  183. strong in the Lord and the strength of

  184. his might. Second, we're told to put on

  185. the whole armor of God. And third, we're

  186. warned that we need to do these things

  187. so that we'll be able to stand against

  188. the schemes of the devil.

  189. So there are three things that Paul just

  190. takes for granted without explanation

  191. that he just assumes that you need to be

  192. profoundly aware of. The first is that

  193. we need to be stronger.

  194. What's implied there is that apart from

  195. God, you are weak.

  196. Morally weak, spiritually weak,

  197. especially weak in conflicts against the

  198. devils and his schemes.

  199. That's not an indictment of anyone

  200. specific. That is a claim about all

  201. Christians everywhere in all the

  202. surrounding regions of Ephesus and every

  203. church. This is a letter that's meant to

  204. be circulated and it's meant to be

  205. applicable across time to all Christians

  206. in all places. We're all weak in this

  207. area.

  208. Second thing, without the armor that

  209. comes from God, we will not be able to

  210. stand.

  211. So God has tools for us to work with, to

  212. defend ourselves with, and if we don't

  213. make use of them, it seems to reason we

  214. will fail. We will be exposed and

  215. vulnerable and susceptible to attack.

  216. And third,

  217. and very very important to get your head

  218. around, is there is in fact a real

  219. personal active thinking, scheming,

  220. planning devil.

  221. a devil who has actual schemes with the

  222. actual end of doing actual harm to the

  223. faith and witness of the church.

  224. So let's take all three of these one at

  225. a time. First thing I want to consider,

  226. Paul exhorts us to be strong in the Lord

  227. and the strength of his might. He

  228. doesn't tell you to make yourself

  229. stronger.

  230. Paul doesn't say you're strong so stand

  231. firm. He says the opposite. You are not

  232. strong. You need to be strengthened by

  233. the power of God. You are weak apart

  234. from God. It's like he's a vine and

  235. you're like branches that flow out of

  236. the vine. And apart from him, you can do

  237. nothing.

  238. That's the idea here.

  239. One of the first things that God often

  240. does to us in the Christian life after

  241. we convert is he exposes to us a little

  242. bit of our sin.

  243. And it often is very overwhelming in the

  244. beginning. and you're like, "Wow, I

  245. didn't realize how evil I was." And just

  246. last month was my 18-year anniversary in

  247. the Lord. And it's kind of amazing how

  248. he just keeps peeling back more layers.

  249. Um, but one of the first things he does

  250. is he he shows that to you and then

  251. goes, you know, repent of that, turn

  252. from that, walk in holiness in this

  253. area. So, I don't know what your thing

  254. is. Forgive that person who wronged you.

  255. I'm sure there's you all have your own

  256. thing. And you try.

  257. You try to do the thing he says and you

  258. fail and you try and you fail and you

  259. try and you fail

  260. and then you find yourself standing at a

  261. crossroads. How am I going to think

  262. about this? Am I going to keep looking

  263. at myself and go, "Why are you so weak?"

  264. Keep looking at myself in the mirror

  265. going, "Be stronger. What's wrong with

  266. you? Try harder."

  267. Or

  268. or

  269. I can accept God's ver verdict over me.

  270. I'm not strong

  271. and neither are you.

  272. We can turn to the one who by his power

  273. raised up Christ from the dead and say,

  274. "Well, I know you're strong. Maybe you

  275. can help me."

  276. God by his strength created the heavens

  277. and the earth.

  278. God in his power causes the me mountains

  279. to tremble and shatters the cedars of

  280. Lebanon.

  281. God by his power

  282. drives back the sea.

  283. He raises the dead

  284. through his son. He causes an entire

  285. millennia's worth of people to be made

  286. alive in Christ, alive from their death

  287. and trespasses and sins.

  288. Why would I keep looking at the mirror

  289. looking for strength in myself when God

  290. is the one who has told me that I am

  291. weak and need to be made strong in him?

  292. Why would I do that?

  293. Why would I not look to the omnipotent

  294. all powerful God who has demonstrated

  295. physically his strength in concrete

  296. history and go you make me strong.

  297. When Paul says be strong in the Lord he

  298. is referring to your union with Christ.

  299. The way that you do that is by drawing

  300. near to him by praying to him by

  301. listening to him by obeying him by

  302. asking him to strengthen you in

  303. communion with him and by repenting when

  304. you fall and coming back for grace in

  305. order to be restored.

  306. That's how you draw upon his infinite

  307. strength.

  308. This is my first big point in spiritual

  309. warfare. Strength is not going to come

  310. from you. It's just not. Strength is

  311. going to come from God. So, be strong in

  312. him and by the strength of his might.

  313. Second big point, the armor is not

  314. something that you're supposed to build.

  315. The armor is not something you're

  316. commanded to forge or construct for

  317. yourself. It's not something that you're

  318. going to go buy from a teacher somewhere

  319. for the very low price of $99.99.

  320. This is something freely given to you by

  321. God.

  322. You are called to take up this armor and

  323. use it. Put on the whole armor of God.

  324. You're told it's here for you. And it's

  325. I will describe it in a few minutes, but

  326. the point is it comes from God, not from

  327. man. You're not going to build it. It's

  328. something you're going to receive.

  329. Both the strength for the warfare and

  330. the armor for the warfare come from the

  331. almighty.

  332. And the last big point is about

  333. spiritual warfare itself.

  334. There's an actual devil with actual

  335. schemes trying to actually inflict

  336. spiritual violence on us.

  337. And this war, this battle isn't

  338. predominantly made against you as

  339. individuals, though that can happen.

  340. It's made against us. This is all in the

  341. plural.

  342. This is the devil doing war against our

  343. congregation.

  344. But let's talk about that for a few

  345. minutes.

  346. What is biblical spiritual warfare?

  347. Well, maybe not surprisingly, it's not

  348. like what you see on TV or in horror

  349. movies.

  350. The first example of spiritual warfare

  351. in scripture is in the garden of God

  352. when a serpent comes to the woman and

  353. asks, "Did God really say?

  354. Did he really say?"

  355. The first shot fired in this battle was

  356. an attempt to sew a seed of doubt

  357. about the word of God.

  358. The heart of the devil's question is,

  359. "Is God really good or is he actually

  360. holding back from you?"

  361. In the book of Zechariah,

  362. you have this courtroom scene where the

  363. high priest is clothed in filthy

  364. garments and it says, "Satan stands

  365. beside him accusing him before the

  366. throne, announcing in front of everyone

  367. all the sins of the priesthood and why

  368. they're worthy of judgment and

  369. condemnation.

  370. That's the other thing the devil does.

  371. He condemns.

  372. He enumerates all the reasons why the

  373. people and the priesthood ought to be

  374. condemned and judged before the Lord.

  375. Later on in the book of Revelation, the

  376. devil uses widescale social persecution

  377. to try and force and pressure the church

  378. to deny Christ.

  379. But much of what the devil does in this

  380. world is about deception. It's about

  381. accusation and it's about fear.

  382. This is actually how you discern the

  383. difference between the voice of God and

  384. the voice of the enemy. The voice of God

  385. always brings moral clarity.

  386. So if I'm doing something wrong, both

  387. the devil and God might say you're doing

  388. something wrong. But God will make it

  389. super clear what it is and really

  390. obvious h how I'm supposed to repent and

  391. he will show me a clear path back to the

  392. place of grace.

  393. The devil seow is confusion.

  394. The devil, the demonic wants to drive

  395. you further into darkness, further into

  396. chaos, further into a a sense of this

  397. accusation that this sin is so great I

  398. can't be forgiven. I can't be restored.

  399. He's aimed at breaking your fellowship

  400. from the Holy One.

  401. He wants to keep us afraid of being

  402. open. He wants to keep us in the fear of

  403. being rejected.

  404. The devil wants to isolate you from

  405. others and keep you from focus to to

  406. keep you focusing on your flesh and on

  407. your fear and on the deceptions that we

  408. tell ourselves.

  409. God is always seeking to bring you out

  410. of those things into light into freedom.

  411. And what I'm suggesting is that most of

  412. the way the devil does this stuff

  413. is not really by trying to scare you.

  414. If we are inattentive,

  415. we can accidentally end up taking this

  416. stuff in through the stuff we watch, the

  417. stuff we listen to.

  418. if we're not paying attention to it.

  419. We can read things and listen to things

  420. that seow doubt and fear in our

  421. relationship with God and ask cause us

  422. to ask did well maybe did he really say?

  423. It's important to understand these three

  424. things. Strength isn't going to come

  425. from you. Help is going to come from

  426. God. and you need to stand firm against

  427. a real enemy who is seeking to harm and

  428. destroy our faith. Let's now transition

  429. to the characters involved in this

  430. spiritual warfare.

  431. Paul says, "We do not for we do not

  432. wrestle against flesh and blood, but

  433. against the rulers and against

  434. authorities and against the cosmic

  435. powers over this present darkness and

  436. against the spiritual forces of evil in

  437. the heavenly places."

  438. One of the biggest mistakes that we make

  439. in our Christian walk is thinking that

  440. spiritual warfare is against other

  441. people.

  442. When Paul says it's not against flesh

  443. and blood, he means other people like

  444. you and me.

  445. One of the most miraculous things about

  446. the gospel is not that God has the power

  447. to defeat his enemies.

  448. The power to defeat enemies is real

  449. power. It's real strength. It's

  450. demonstrated in the real world all the

  451. time. But I would like to contend to you

  452. that that's not real power in God's

  453. economy. You know what real power is?

  454. Taking your enemies and transforming

  455. them into friends.

  456. That's power.

  457. The gospel can transform people who want

  458. to kill the Lord Jesus into people who

  459. are willing to die for the Lord Jesus.

  460. And because that's the true power of the

  461. gospel, our warfare is never against

  462. other people. Even people ins snared by

  463. the devil. Even people who have decided

  464. to declare me and you as their enemies.

  465. All of our enemies in this world are not

  466. to be viewed as enemy combatants.

  467. They are lost children ins snared by our

  468. true enemy. They are imagebearing

  469. children of God who are under the

  470. influence and power of the evil one.

  471. That's why Jesus tells us to love our

  472. memory our enemies and to pray for those

  473. who persecute us.

  474. Look, I understand

  475. that there are people who do wicked

  476. things in this world. There are people

  477. who do things and you look at them and

  478. you look at their actions and they are

  479. morally reprehensible and it makes you

  480. sick to your stomach. But I want you to

  481. think about something.

  482. That guy was me 18 years ago.

  483. That person, man or woman, I don't know

  484. why I said guy, but that person

  485. can be transformed like that from an

  486. enemy into a friend.

  487. That person that you're despising for

  488. how evil they are could be the next

  489. pastor of this church.

  490. I'm not joking.

  491. Stranger things have happened.

  492. You know,

  493. we don't wrestle against flesh and

  494. blood. It's it's so easy to despise

  495. people who are trapped in cycles of

  496. brokenness and bondage to sin.

  497. And I understand it,

  498. but we're not supposed to do that. Those

  499. are people who are ins snared. Those are

  500. people who need freedom and help and

  501. healing. And you possess in your mind

  502. and in your heart the message, the power

  503. that can actually save them.

  504. We don't wrestle against flesh and

  505. blood. Who do we wrestle against? We

  506. wrestle against rulers and authorities

  507. and cosmic powers and spiritual forces

  508. of evil in the heavenly places.

  509. What are all of those?

  510. The scripture is vague. It seems to

  511. imply there's like this hierarchy of

  512. demons maybe, but it's tough to take a

  513. strong view because there's just not

  514. enough information.

  515. Biblically, Satan is the the leader of

  516. this group and his lackey are enumerated

  517. here and they are almost definitely I

  518. can't say with absolute certainty but

  519. almost definitely fallen angels

  520. creatures created by God to be servants

  521. of mankind who rebelled against God with

  522. the devil and whom God judged and placed

  523. under judgment until the day of

  524. destruction.

  525. These are spiritual invisible creatures

  526. who now live under Satan's influence

  527. and make it their aim to work from the

  528. unseen realm against what God is doing

  529. in the world to try to destroy it and

  530. corrupt it.

  531. These creatures, it says, are in the

  532. heavenly places. The heavenly places

  533. probably refers not to the throne room

  534. of God, but to the spiritual realm that

  535. somehow overlaps this realm.

  536. But it's important to see here the

  537. characters involved in the battle.

  538. There's us, God's church. There are

  539. people, flesh and blood, that these dark

  540. creatures seek to use whom Paul says we

  541. are not at war with. And then there's

  542. the devil and his friends, the devil and

  543. his followers, his rulers, his powers,

  544. his forces.

  545. And finally, there's God who gives us

  546. this armor to stand firm against them.

  547. And I think it's really important and

  548. helpful to sometimes stop and remind

  549. ourselves

  550. about the asymmetrical nature of this

  551. warfare.

  552. The word asymmetrical means it's not

  553. equal. It's not two equally opposing

  554. forces and we're waiting to see who's

  555. going to win.

  556. We're standing out here a second ago and

  557. no one understood why I said this, but I

  558. was thinking about the asymmetrical

  559. power of God. And we're all praying. We

  560. finish praying and there's a roly pololy

  561. walking right in the middle of us. And I

  562. said without any context, imagine the

  563. collective power of all of us against

  564. that roly pololy.

  565. And Matt Hagen was like, "What are you

  566. about to do?" Or Matt Hoffman was like,

  567. "Don't don't do it, man."

  568. But I was thinking, you know, think

  569. about us small creatures against that

  570. smaller creature. The devil, all his

  571. minions are a creature like us.

  572. And then there's the uncreated one.

  573. powers, authorities. Sounds like a like

  574. a pretty big force, right?

  575. What's bigger? That force or the

  576. universe?

  577. That looks pretty big and pretty strong.

  578. You know what else is pretty big and

  579. pretty strong?

  580. The power required to hold galaxies

  581. together.

  582. That's pretty strong, too.

  583. That is in fact asymmetrical strength.

  584. That is power imbalance to the highest

  585. possible degree.

  586. And that power imbalance does not

  587. alleviate our need to be prepared. It

  588. doesn't deliver us from our need to

  589. withstand and stand firm against the

  590. deceptions and accusations of the devil.

  591. But is very important to keep in mind as

  592. you fight. If God is on my side, the

  593. devil cannot win. He can't. He's not

  594. strong enough. He's already been mostly

  595. defeated at the cross when Christ took

  596. from him the fear of death. He used to

  597. use the fear of death. Do this or I'll

  598. kill you. But Jesus at the cross

  599. transformed death into a door.

  600. And all he can do now with death is send

  601. me to be with the one whom my soul

  602. loves.

  603. That's all he can use death to do now.

  604. But what he can still do is lie to me.

  605. He can still discourage me. He can still

  606. try to distort the truth in my thinking

  607. and in my behavior.

  608. You know, I I read the Puritans are so

  609. interesting on spiritual warfare. They

  610. have all these pathy sayings. There was

  611. this guy, I can't remember what book it

  612. was in, but he said um did I write it

  613. down here?

  614. Darn it.

  615. He says something to the effect of like

  616. the um the devil would rather destroy

  617. your faith than your flesh.

  618. He'd rather harm your faith than your

  619. flesh. If he can harm your faith, he can

  620. get you to doubt God and he can turn

  621. that into all kinds of evil. What can he

  622. do if he hurts our flesh?

  623. Drive us closer to him?

  624. He would rather us doubt than die.

  625. If he can get you to doubt, he might be

  626. able to wreck a good thing that God is

  627. making in the world. If he causes you to

  628. die, he sends you to the one you were

  629. made for.

  630. With standing and standing firm in this

  631. text are perseverance words. They're

  632. words about not getting knocked off the

  633. way, not getting to the place where you

  634. want to quit.

  635. There going to be attempts to sew seeds

  636. of doubt and trouble your conscience

  637. with the memories of past sins. There's

  638. going to be real attempts to create

  639. discord and disunityity by appealing to

  640. our flesh, by the manipulation of our tr

  641. of the truth into something monstrous

  642. and distorted. And the call that you and

  643. I have been given is to stand firm

  644. against these things.

  645. To refuse to distrust our God because

  646. his son has died for us. to refuse to

  647. live in the shame of past sin because

  648. the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all

  649. unrighteousness.

  650. To refuse to hate our brother no matter

  651. how much our flesh wants to because

  652. Christ died for both him and us.

  653. In verses 11 and 13, we're called to put

  654. on the whole armor of God. Not part of

  655. it, not some of it, all of it.

  656. That's who's involved. You, the devil,

  657. the ones the devils would seek to use,

  658. and God himself. And this is

  659. asymmetrical warfare. Let's now close by

  660. considering what the armor actually is.

  661. Now,

  662. for those of you who grew up in church,

  663. you might have a complicated

  664. relationship with the armor of God. I'm

  665. seeing this now with my own children

  666. where they're learning children's songs

  667. about it and there's props and there's,

  668. you know, which is great. I'm glad

  669. they're learning about it. But I think

  670. you can accidentally begin to associate

  671. this with like nostalgia and kid things

  672. and lose sight of the context that this

  673. is about

  674. actual meaningful perseverance of your

  675. faith in the face of demonic assault.

  676. Where I want to start is with the

  677. observation that this armor this armor

  678. is a corporate reality.

  679. We're exhorted to do all this stuff

  680. together. All these commands that are

  681. about to be given us are all plural.

  682. It's all to you plural.

  683. That means this is something we're

  684. called to do as a group. I'm not just

  685. supposed to be concerning myself with

  686. the belt of truth, but also all of you.

  687. We together need to stand in the truth.

  688. And if we do, we together will resist

  689. the devil. This is not about any of us

  690. isolated on our own doing this apart

  691. from everyone else.

  692. That's why it's so important to be in

  693. regular fellowship with each other to,

  694. you know, there's times I was talking

  695. with someone earlier about how, you

  696. know,

  697. I know a lot. I have a lot of scripture

  698. memorized, but sometimes I'm really

  699. struggling with something and it just

  700. takes someone else outside of my own

  701. head to remind me, hey, here's what

  702. God's word says. And that completely

  703. changes my view of the of the situation

  704. and enables me to go engage it with

  705. holiness.

  706. I need that. And so do you.

  707. Now, all that being said, it's good to

  708. know what this armor is or what it

  709. represents. And maybe you'll surprise be

  710. surprised to hear, maybe you won't.

  711. Views have differed across time about

  712. how to properly interpret what the armor

  713. is.

  714. So for instance, if you go back to the

  715. very early church, guys like St.

  716. Augustine thought that to say put on the

  717. armor of God was like roughly equivalent

  718. to what Paul said earlier in Ephesians 5

  719. about putting on Christ. After all, the

  720. truth is in Christ. Righteousness is in

  721. Christ. Um all these things that are

  722. described in the armor you could say are

  723. in Christ. And so effectively what he

  724. the way that he and many others thought

  725. about it in the beginning was we are to

  726. reflect upon our union with Christ and

  727. try to let the realities of that union

  728. of that reconciliation the fact that I

  729. am now at peace with God to inform how I

  730. do everything to inform how I treat

  731. other people, how I think about myself,

  732. how I think about my work and so forth

  733. and especially in how I make war against

  734. the devil.

  735. Later on during the medieval period a

  736. guy like Thomas Aquinus would have said

  737. we ought to really think of the armor

  738. more like virtues.

  739. So we ought to be trying to become more

  740. righteous. We ought to become trying to

  741. be more faithful. We ought to be better

  742. at using the word of God. And he would

  743. have thought of it more in terms of

  744. qualities and characters that we receive

  745. by grace from God that were meant to

  746. sharpen and strengthen by the spirit's

  747. help so that we become people who are

  748. more like this.

  749. Cultivating a love for righteousness, a

  750. faithful, practical, righteous living.

  751. In other words, the armor wasn't so much

  752. about focusing on our union with Christ

  753. and everything so much as it was about

  754. his grace at work in our lives forbing

  755. these virtues.

  756. Later on, 500 years or so later during

  757. the reformation, John Calvin came along

  758. and he wanted to say that the armor of

  759. God are these spiritual realities given

  760. to us by God in the gospel for our

  761. defense against the devil.

  762. The truth, the belt of truth is

  763. doctrinal truth that guards us against

  764. Satan's lies. The breastplate of

  765. righteousness is both our justification

  766. in Christ and our sanctification by the

  767. spirit. The gospel of peace, he would

  768. say, is our assurance of our

  769. reconciliation with God. And faith, the

  770. shield of faith is our firm trust in

  771. God's promises, especially in trials.

  772. After that, the Puritans came along and

  773. they emphasized the individual

  774. application of these ideas. That was

  775. kind of their big shtick is you

  776. personally doing this.

  777. And what's interesting is I look back on

  778. all that stuff and I' I've read through

  779. it and I don't really feel like I

  780. disagree with any of any of it. It just

  781. seems to be kind of looking at a similar

  782. teaching through different lenses

  783. or at different levels. I'm not sure

  784. it's like an either or you have to pick.

  785. I think that multiple things can be

  786. going on at once here.

  787. For instance, the individual application

  788. that the Puritans would have suggested

  789. isn't really meant to be at odds with

  790. the corporate realities. It's not like

  791. they're two. It has to be one or the

  792. other. It can be both. We can work on

  793. cultivating it in ourselves and helping

  794. each other as a group put on the armor

  795. of God.

  796. these this whole gift of armor is a gift

  797. of grace

  798. and we're able to make use of it by

  799. grace.

  800. Let's think through a few practical

  801. considerations of how to do this. You've

  802. probably heard people talk about how

  803. most of this armor is defensive. belts,

  804. breastplates,

  805. armor for your feet, shields, helmets.

  806. Those are not offensive weapons. Those

  807. are given to you to protect you from

  808. being attacked.

  809. The implication of that in my mind is

  810. that you and I are not supposed to leave

  811. this room and go looking for trouble

  812. with the devil.

  813. We're not being trained for war. We're

  814. being trained for heaven. And this is

  815. about self-defense on the way there. I

  816. think is the I think

  817. we're being taught to defend ourselves.

  818. And of course, there's one obvious

  819. exception. The tool that you're given to

  820. fight back with against the enemy is

  821. God's word.

  822. And I don't think Paul means throw your

  823. Bible at him.

  824. I think Paul means memorize his promises

  825. and be prepared to use it in the day of

  826. temptation

  827. that you may be able to strike back

  828. against the devil's lies.

  829. All of us are going to face times in

  830. this world, in this life between now and

  831. glory, where you feel alone,

  832. where you feel exposed and vulnerable

  833. and helpless.

  834. And you'll be tempted to think in that

  835. moment that there's no one you can turn

  836. to, no one who will help, no one who

  837. will understand.

  838. That is a common place that the enemy

  839. strikes.

  840. You're alone.

  841. Nobody cares about you.

  842. God has forgotten you.

  843. It's really important in that day that

  844. you have a big strong gun to shoot back

  845. at him called Hebrews 13:5. That's where

    Hebrews 13:5

  846. God promises, I will never leave leave

  847. you. I will never forsake you ever.

  848. Matthew 28, I will be with you always,

  849. even to the ends of the ages. That is

  850. what God has promised. And so that is

  851. what I will believe. independent of how

  852. I feel, independent of what I'm tempted

  853. to think in my flesh, I'm going to trust

  854. the word of God more than I trust my own

  855. feelings.

  856. When you feel guilty or ashamed of your

  857. past sins,

  858. sometimes the enemy will come and heap

  859. on the coals and say, "You are the

  860. worst.

  861. You are a failure.

  862. You tried and tried and tried. I guess

  863. this is just who you are.

  864. That's how he talks.

  865. Do you recognize that voice? Have you

  866. heard that before?

  867. It's really important when that day

  868. comes that you have words in your heart

  869. like, "If we confess our sins, he is

  870. faithful and just to forgive us our sins

  871. and to cleanse us from all

  872. unrighteousness."

  873. 1 John 1:9.

    1 John 1:9

  874. It's important in that day to have words

  875. like, "You would not delight in

  876. sacrifices or I'd give them. You will

  877. not be pleased with the burnt offering.

  878. The sacrifices of God are a broken

  879. spirit, a broken and contrite heart. Oh

  880. God, you will not despise." Psalm 51:17.

    Psalms 51:17

  881. It's much harder for the devil to

  882. convince you of these things when you've

  883. memorized the places where God has

  884. literally said the opposite thing is

  885. true.

  886. It's like a weapon to shoot back with.

  887. It's really good to have some of these

  888. passages memorized for the day that real

  889. genuine evil happens when real genuine

  890. tragedy comes because it will.

  891. It's going to happen at some point.

  892. It happened at our Morgan Hill campus

  893. last year when a sweet little girl died

  894. drowning in a pool.

  895. It's really important to have the word

  896. of God ready for the kinds of

  897. temptations that an event like that

  898. could introduce into your soul.

  899. I lift up my eyes to the hills. Where

  900. does my help come from in something like

  901. this?

  902. My help comes from the Lord, the maker

  903. of heaven and earth.

  904. Who can separate us from the love of

  905. Christ?

  906. Shall tribulation like this separate us?

  907. Shall distress

  908. or persecution or famine or nakedness or

  909. sword? As it's written, we are being

  910. killed all the day long. We are regarded

  911. as sheep to be slaughtered.

  912. No. In all these things, we're more than

  913. conquerors through him who loved us. For

  914. I am sure that neither life nor death

  915. dot dot dot will be able to separate us

  916. from the love of God in Christ Jesus.

  917. That stuff is for the day of adversity.

  918. That stuff is for the evil day, Paul

  919. calls it in Ephesians 6.

  920. Those verses are weapons against the

  921. voice of deception when they come. The

  922. voice of accusation and despair in the

  923. dark days.

  924. And we're called to arm ourselves with

  925. all of these things.

  926. We're called to believe the gospel that

  927. through Christ we are made righteous.

  928. And now we are called to pursue

  929. righteous living with all of our heart.

  930. We're called to trust in Christ who is

  931. the truth who teaches us truth, helps me

  932. walk in the truth by his Holy Spirit.

  933. I'm called to put on the readiness given

  934. to me by the gospel of peace. I think

  935. that's readiness to run back to God

  936. after we fail. Readiness to draw others

  937. back to God when they fail. to strive

  938. for peace with my enemies.

  939. I am called, you are called, we are

  940. called to take up the shield of faith,

  941. that is hope in his promises.

  942. We're called to believe that they're

  943. true, and to use them to resist the

  944. vicious attacks of the enemy.

  945. We're called to take up the helmet of

  946. salvation, which is the hope we have of

  947. future glory, of resurrection, of

  948. glorification, of eternity with God.

  949. We're called to take up the sword of the

  950. spirit, which is the word of God, and to

  951. rightly understand and use it to resist

  952. the lies and deception of the enemy.

  953. And most of all, most of all, we're

  954. called to do that together

  955. as a family in the Lord, to help each

  956. other, to remind each other, to pray for

  957. each other, to call each other back when

  958. we wander away from these really

  959. important things.

  960. We have to help each other feel our

  961. connection to the anchor who is Christ

  962. who has gone in the veil before us. We

  963. have to help each other understand that

  964. we are unbreakably connected to him that

  965. he is our everything and that he's with

  966. us in everything.

  967. Paul closes with prayer. I'm going to

  968. spend a lot more time on prayer next

  969. week, but obviously you can see the text

  970. end ends in prayer. And that is the

  971. underlying practice which establishes

  972. which enables which draws our attention

  973. to our union with Christ. And it's in

  974. prayer that we are most aware of these

  975. spiritual realities. Prayer is

  976. fundamental. But I'm going to spend more

  977. time on it next week.

  978. Now having said all this,

  979. the power of spirit spiritual warfare

  980. comes from God. Two, the characters of

  981. spiritual warfare, us, the devil, those

  982. the devil uses, and God himself. And

  983. three, that the armor itself is this, I

  984. guess, theologically rich combination of

  985. things that basically summarize the

  986. fundamental duties of the Christian

  987. life. We're called to be about these

  988. things.

  989. Having said all that, it's worth noting

  990. that of all the things that Paul has

  991. called us to focus on in the letter to

  992. the Ephesians, of all the applications

  993. that he has sorted through since the

  994. beginning of chapter 4, church unity,

  995. pursuit of holiness and maturity, a

  996. desire to put off our old self as

  997. Gentiles, the desire to be one as he is

  998. one in Christ, the desire to be faithful

  999. husbands and wives, to honor our

1000. parents, to be faithful at work. At the

1001. end of that long list is spiritual

  1002. warfare.

1003. So it's important because it's on the

1004. list, but it's also the last thing on

  1005. the list.

  1006. What I'm saying is

1007. I think if you do all of that other

  1008. stuff,

1009. if you pursue unity with each other, if

1010. you try to put off your old self, you

1011. try to walk in holiness, you try to like

1012. love the people in your life, speak well

1013. to the people in your life in a way that

1014. reflects Jesus, if you forgive each

1015. other, if you put away all wrath and

1016. clamor, all that stuff that Paul's been

1017. saying, if you focus on doing that,

1018. you're going to basically be ready to

  1019. for this day.

1020. I don't think it has to necessarily be

1021. its own separate thing that you're

1022. focused on. It's important. It's on the

1023. list of important things, but it's also

1024. last on the list. And so that's kind of

1025. what I mean when I prayed in the

1026. beginning that we would focus on these

1027. things in due appropriate proportion.

  1028. It's important.

1029. It's also not the most important thing.

1030. God is the most important thing. His

1031. gospel in Christ Jesus is the most

1032. important thing. And it's amazing how by

1033. getting those things right, somehow all

  1034. this other stuff

  1035. works itself out appropriately.

1036. What I believe Paul was saying is this.

1037. All you need for spiritual warfare is

1038. yours in Christ. So stand firm. Let's

  1039. pray.
