  1. We're [clears throat] continuing on in

  2. this series about heaven.

  3. And in some sense, this is a virtually

  4. impossible task. Depending on how you

  5. interpret First Corinthians chapter 2,

    1 Corinthians 2 chapter mention

  6. the stuff that we're trying to talk

  7. about is such that no eye has seen, no

  8. ear has heard, what has not entered into

  9. the mind or the heart of human beings

  10. that which God has prepared for us. and

  11. we're trying to talk about that.

  12. It's going to be very very difficult.

  13. But God has given us clues to pay

  14. attention to. And if we're not paying

  15. attention to those clues, we might we

  16. might miss out or misunderstand what it

  17. is that God has prepared for us. And

  18. speaking about being oblivious with

  19. clues, when it comes with regards to the

  20. ways of romance in the heart, I am

  21. oblivious when it comes to clues.

  22. So

  23. many many years ago

  24. before Alyssa and I were married, we

  25. were in a band together and there was a

  26. season in the during the band's career

  27. where we were we would go to her

  28. apartment to do songwriting sessions.

  29. We'd have her guitars out and we all the

  30. all the band members would be at her

  31. apartment and she'd come and serve

  32. coffee for everybody and we just go

  33. about our day. Okay,

  34. fast forward in the future a few years

  35. later. I found out after we were married

  36. that she was flirting with me, but I

  37. didn't notice. Uh, apparently her

  38. friends would tease her that she'd

  39. spending a little extra time putting on

  40. the makeup, spending a little extra time

  41. picking out the right outfit. Uh, making

  42. sure that the coffee I had was going to

  43. be a really good cup of coffee.

  44. Unfortunately, back then, uh, in my

  45. mid20s, I hated coffee, unlike now. Uh

  46. but all of this flirting activity wof be

  47. I didn't notice the clues. I'm very bad

  48. at noticing such clues. I was oblivious.

  49. I think when it comes to thinking about

  50. the life of the world to come, God has

  51. given us clues, but we might just be as

  52. equally oblivious to those clues. And so

  53. you see even Christians have an almost

  54. cartoon picture of what the life of the

  55. world to come is going to be like. It

  56. can be as overly simplistic as images

  57. that are popular in culture, such as

  58. people sitting on clouds playing harps.

  59. Or I often times meet lots of Christians

  60. who do think that the life of the world

  61. to come is where we're going to be in

  62. some disembodied state forever. And as

  63. you hopefully heard two weeks ago from

  64. Pastor Elliott when he was here, that

  65. you have been disabused of that notion.

  66. When we go after death to be at home

  67. with the Lord and we are away from our

  68. bodies, that is a way station, a

  69. temporary stopping point. That is not

  70. the final end. And yet, lots of

  71. Christians I meet say, "Well, I can't

  72. wait to get rid of my body and get away

  73. from this world and go escape forever."

  74. In fact, I've heard worship songs that

  75. talk [snorts] exactly in that kind of

  76. way. We're going to abandon this world

  77. behind in our bodies and go live out

  78. there. That is not the language of

  79. scripture and the teaching of Christ.

  80. And so hopefully we can start paying

  81. better attention to the clues that God

  82. has actually given to us so that we can

  83. expect the right kind of things. And so

  84. if we're going to stay close to biblical

  85. language,

  86. sometimes heaven is not the most

  87. appropriate term. It's a perfectly good

  88. term to use. Heaven is a great term.

  89. It's a biblical term. One difficulty

  90. though is that the word heaven is

  91. ambiguous and it's used ambiguously in

  92. the Bible too. Sometimes the word heaven

  93. just means the skies, the stuff up

  94. there. Sometimes the Bible uses the word

  95. heaven to talk about the unique presence

  96. of God where God is located. And so

  97. heaven then becomes the language of

  98. referring to the source of power and

  99. presence and all goodness because that

  100. is where God is located. So this

  101. ambiguity of heaven makes it kind of

  102. tricky. If we're going to stay closer to

  103. biblical language and we want to talk

  104. about the life of the world to come, it

  105. would be better for us to use terms such

  106. as resurrection

  107. and new heaven and new earth. And last

  108. week, Jason spent some time talking

  109. about resurrection. that what we should

  110. expect is when the Lord returns, these

  111. mortal bodies will be raised

  112. imperishable. We are meant to have these

  113. bodies forever. This exact one, but

  114. radically transformed, renewed, just as

  115. Jesus's body that went into the tomb was

  116. the one that came out of the tomb, but

  117. radically transformed. So this body one

  118. day after death will be raised. So

  119. resurrection is a big theme for the life

  120. of the world to come. but the other is

  121. new heaven and new earth. And that's

  122. what I'd like to talk to you about this

  123. morning. So, if you have your Bibles,

  124. please turn to Revelation chapter 21.

    Revelation 21 chapter mention

  125. We're going to be reading verses 1-4.

  126. And our goal isn't to unpack all that

  127. Revelation has to say. We're not going

  128. through our normal series. Right now,

  129. we've been going through the book of

  130. Ecclesiastes. So, that if we were going

  131. through the book of Revelation, there'd

  132. be a lot more to say. But what I'm

  133. hoping to do is just paint a picture for

  134. you with regards to what we should

  135. expect the new heaven and the new earth

  136. to be like and then what that means for

  137. us practically right now. So Revelation

  138. 21:es

  139. 1-4,

  140. a reading from the book of Revelation.

  141. Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth.

  142. For the first heaven and the first earth

  143. had passed away, and the sea was no

  144. more.

  145. And I saw the holy city, New Jerusalem,

  146. coming down out of heaven from God,

  147. prepared as a bride adorned for her

  148. husband.

  149. And I heard a loud voice from the

  150. throne, saying, "Behold,

  151. the dwelling place of God is with man.

  152. He will dwell with them and they will be

  153. his people and God himself will be with

  154. them as their God.

  155. He will wipe away every tear from their

  156. eyes and death shall be no more. Neither

  157. shall there be mourning nor crying nor

  158. pain anymore.

  159. For the former things have passed away.

  160. the word of the Lord.

  161. As I've been meditating on this passage

  162. and this theme for the last month, what

  163. I believe God has been teaching me and I

  164. hope he teaches you this morning is that

  165. the Lord will renew the earth and make

  166. his home with us. God's project is a

  167. renewal project

  168. to restore, renovate the world and to

  169. make his home here with us. And so I

  170. want to ask several questions. The first

  171. question is what should we expect the

  172. life of the world to come to be like?

  173. This renewed world. What should we

  174. expect that to be like? And then I want

  175. to ask some practical questions. What

  176. does that tell us about the kind of

  177. story we're in? And what does it tell us

  178. about the point of life? Where

  179. everything is headed to? What's the

  180. trajectory of life? So let's first start

  181. with the first question. What should we

  182. expect the life of the world to come uh

  183. to come to be like this renewed world?

  184. So look again at verse one. He sees this

  185. vision of new heaven and new earth

  186. because he sees the first earth, the

  187. first heaven and the first earth having

  188. passed away. What's this language of

  189. first heaven and first earth? Well,

  190. where did you hear that kind of

  191. language? It should make everyone go all

  192. the way back to Genesis when God created

  193. the heaven and the earth where the

  194. heaven is all the stuff up there, the

  195. skies and above and the earth is the

  196. land down here. In some ways, you could

  197. think of the entire Bible as the story

  198. of creation

  199. to new creation and everything that is

  200. God that God is doing to get us from

  201. creation to new creation. And when we

  202. put our minds back to creation, what

  203. should we think of? What are we told?

  204. Sometimes it's easy for us to talk about

  205. how powerful God is. All powerful, all

  206. knowing. What's the first thing that you

  207. learn about God if you read the Bible

  208. from cover to cover? that he is a

  209. creative artist. He creates the world

  210. and he saw that it was good and

  211. beautiful.

  212. We are supposed to think of creation not

  213. as some dump, some trash bin that we

  214. want to leave behind, but God's creative

  215. activity that is good and beautiful. But

  216. almost as quickly as God creates and

  217. designs something so wonderful does he

  218. make us to have dominion to be his

  219. representatives and ambassadors on this

  220. world that we end up mcking and marring

  221. the world. We stain it and defile it. It

  222. has become tainted by what we have done

  223. or to use the language of the fall. We

  224. have corrupted ourselves and this world.

  225. And what do we know about us then? We

  226. who have corrupted spirits and bodies

  227. that even so death comes. Death becomes

  228. the consequence of what we've done to

  229. ourselves and to this world. Now the

  230. good news of Jesus Christ is that he has

  231. take care. He has taken care of sin and

  232. death. But you ever notice you're all

  233. still going to die?

  234. You're all unless Christ returns as

  235. Jason talked about, we're all dead.

  236. What is I thought Jesus took care of

  237. death. Well, he did not stop death from

  238. occurring. His defeat of death isn't to

  239. make death go away, but to take the

  240. sting away from death. As we read in 1

  241. Corinthians 15, the power of death, it

  242. has no more power over us. We can almost

  243. mock it. We can almost turn it into a

  244. friend. mock it the way that we might

  245. mock friends. It has turned from enemy

  246. to a kind of friend. But this too,

  247. because it's been infected by sin, has

  248. to die. Similarly too, it looks like the

  249. world itself infected by sin has to die.

  250. Last week, Pastor Jason read from second

    2 Peter 3 chapter mention

  251. Peter chapter 3 and he used this image

  252. of the heavenly bodies burning up.

  253. And we have to pay attention to clues. I

  254. don't think we're used to that kind of

  255. language. In Peter's time, there would

  256. have been various schools of thought.

  257. And one of these schools would have said

  258. at the end of the age, everything's

  259. going to burn up and then it's going to

  260. cycle all over again. Now, Peter does

  261. not believe that. He doesn't believe

  262. everything just repeats on cycle, burns

  263. up and and starts all over again. But

  264. he's using a familiar image of

  265. everything burning up as a kind of

  266. metaphor for the world's death. Because

  267. because we use metaphors, too. I

  268. remember when I was young, I didn't

  269. understand the expression kick the

  270. bucket. And I'm sure that if we use that

  271. expression to Peter, he would have been

  272. very mystified by what we mean by kick

  273. the bucket. So, we have to be careful

  274. with the clues. He's saying the world in

  275. itself has to die in the way that our

  276. bodies have to die because it too has

  277. been infected by sin. But what happens

  278. when the world dies and its infection

  279. dies with it? Well, read this very

  280. interesting clause in verse one. And the

  281. sea was no more.

  282. I first came upon that passage in

  283. college

  284. and I I should have been reading my

  285. Bible at a much younger age even though

  286. I was attending church, but I'd never

  287. read this passage. And I remember in my

  288. early 20s being mystified and a little

  289. sad because I had moved to Southern

  290. California. I was just learning how to

  291. surf. And then I thought, "Oh no, in

  292. heaven there are no more beaches." What

  293. a what a terrible place. How could this

  294. be paradise if you taken away the

  295. beaches?

  296. Let's pay attention to clues. That's not

  297. what it's saying. We have to go back and

  298. understand

  299. how they're understanding these symbols

  300. and images. So, clue clue finding time.

  301. Don't be like me when it comes to

  302. romance. Let's pay attention to the

  303. clues. What do we know about the sea?

  304. Well, he's contrasting it from the

  305. heaven. Why? It's not as though God is

  306. literally higher up there. It's not as

  307. though if you climb Mount Everest,

  308. you're closer to God. Or if you fly on a

  309. plane, you're closer to God. Why would

  310. they use the image of the skies and the

  311. space out there as an image for God's

  312. presence? Because when we look up in the

  313. skies and we see all of the heavenly

  314. bodies, what do we notice? Perfect

  315. order. It it virtually never deviates.

  316. Everything happens in accordance to a

  317. perfect system.

  318. And then in the ancient world, they look

  319. out at the sea and what do they notice?

  320. Chaos. The sea is a symbol of the

  321. chaotic. It can look clear and then

  322. within 15 minutes you could have a

  323. devastating storm that can capsize the

  324. ship. So the sea becomes this image of

  325. chaos. If you pay attention also to the

  326. Old Testament, there's another

  327. connotation that the sea has. It is the

  328. source of threats and enemies. If you're

  329. an Israelite, a member of God's people,

  330. and you see people coming from ships,

  331. often times you have military power

  332. coming to take over. So sea, a bad

  333. place, political power. But if you also

  334. read in the Old Testament and the New

  335. Testament, the sea is also an image of

  336. the enemies that are spiritual,

  337. of demonic forces and threats. And if

  338. you pay attention to the gospels,

  339. especially in the gospel of Mark, and

  340. when Jesus demonstrates power over the

  341. sea, and you see what has happened

  342. before and after in that gospel, you'll

  343. see that their image of the sea was this

  344. is the place where threats and enemies

  345. arise. So, in this depiction where it

  346. says there's no more sea, it's not

  347. saying bye-bye ocean, bye-bye beaches.

  348. What it's telling us is that the chaos

  349. that seems to pervade and rule our world

  350. will be no more. And the sources of

  351. enemies and threats will be no more. In

  352. fact, if you pay attention to

  353. Revelation, the immediate chapter before

  354. in Revelation 20, what happens to all

  355. the great enemies, Satan and death?

  356. They're all vanquished.

  357. That is the image of what is passing

  358. away. Then what does John, the author of

  359. Revelation, see? He beholds a new heaven

  360. and a new earth. He sees a new world

  361. taking its place. Now, we got to be

  362. very, very careful because I think some

  363. Christians have also misunderstood this.

  364. And part of the problem is that word

  365. new.

  366. It does not mean a distinct thing. So,

  367. let me give you an example of what I

  368. mean by new as a distinct thing. I have

  369. a copy of Dante's Divine Comedy and

  370. starting to tear because I've had it for

  371. about 25 years. And so when I was in

  372. North Carolina and I was in in the

  373. airport, I bought a new copy. It's a

  374. different copy. I can hold both copies.

  375. One is dusty, dirty. It's it's it's

  376. ripping apart. And the other one is

  377. fresh and shiny, but there's two of

  378. them. There is a word that John could

  379. have used to mean new. In that sense, he

  380. doesn't use that word. He uses another

  381. word for new because he's trying to use

  382. the understanding from Isaiah chapter 65

    Isaiah 65 chapter mention

  383. and 66 which is where we get the

  384. language of new heaven and new earth

  385. about something being renewed or

  386. restored. You you understand that

  387. meaning of new is a very very common

  388. thing. Uh John Wood likes to restore

  389. cars. He's like check out the new car

  390. and he takes some old junky car. He

  391. radically renovates it, repairs it, and

  392. then its quality is so much better. Or

  393. maybe a better example, the Shribers

  394. just remodeled their home. And what was

  395. really cool is when they invited us over

  396. for uh to party at the new house, they

  397. had pictures of the old house and the

  398. new house. Now, is it the same house?

  399. Yes, it's the same house, but it's been

  400. so restored that it's almost

  401. unrecognizable.

  402. That is the language of new heaven and

  403. new earth. It's the same world, the same

  404. heaven and earth. It's this, but its

  405. quality has radically transformed. It

  406. has been restored and renovated almost

  407. to the point of being unrecognizable.

  408. In fact, the first fruits of new

  409. creation is Jesus's resurrected body.

  410. And what do we notice there? It's the

  411. same body. The same body that went into

  412. the tomb is the same body that went out

  413. of the tomb. But it was also so

  414. radically transformed that some of his

  415. friends and intimate partners had a hard

  416. time recognizing who he was. If if if

  417. you look at the old pictures of the

  418. Shriber's home, almost unrecognizable to

  419. the new one, but it's the same one.

  420. That's the language of new heaven and

  421. new earth. It is this place but

  422. radically renovated and restored.

  423. And that's really all I can say with any

  424. confidence about what the life of the

  425. world to come has be like. So we we

  426. could call it quits and be done. But if

  427. you know me, we're about to go for

  428. another 3 hours. So um

  429. honestly, there's not much more I can

  430. say other than it will be this place but

  431. radically transformed and glorified,

  432. renovated and restored.

  433. But we can have clues

  434. in Romans chapter 8.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  435. It likens creation as a pregnant woman.

  436. Creation is groaning with birth pains

  437. waiting for the revelation.

  438. Do you ever There are things for the

  439. fetus in the womb that make no sense

  440. when you're in the womb, but make a lot

  441. of sense when you're out of the womb.

  442. Because that fetus has hands and feet

  443. and eyes and a mouth. It's not using

  444. anything. It's not using any of those in

  445. the womb, but all of that is in

  446. preparation for what's to come outside

  447. of the womb. So, similarly, there are

  448. probably things here right now that

  449. don't make sense why we're doing them or

  450. what they're for, but when the life of

  451. the world to come arrives, we'll go,

  452. "Oh, I see. That is what that was for."

  453. And while I don't know exactly what will

  454. remain and what those things will be, I

  455. do know one thing, and Jason alluded to

  456. it last week, and it's something that I

  457. think we just hear as Christians, but is

  458. actually insane if you think about it.

  459. The one activity I know that we'll all

  460. be doing is we're going to be reigning

  461. with Christ.

  462. Christ has appointed us to rule and

  463. reign with him forever. Again, you've

  464. heard that language. She like whatever

  465. church do do you hear how crazy that is?

  466. Scott, it's my turn to pick on Scott,

  467. right? Uh Scott is a tremendously good

  468. elder for our church. I entrust him with

  469. all the important things of West Hills,

  470. but to entrust him with everything for

  471. our world. The whole world. Are you

  472. crazy? Jacqueline is an amazing

  473. administrator. Trust her with all of our

  474. church ministry uh organizational stuff.

  475. But to administer the whole world, like

  476. that's insane.

  477. Jason Trap wrote me in for president,

  478. you know, in a ride and he actually

  479. wrote my name in, right? So, I've

  480. actually had somebody vote for me for

  481. president. Do you know how badly I would

  482. ruin our country if I were actually

  483. president? And yet, God has destined you

  484. and me to reign with Christ forever.

  485. What happened when Adam was supposed to

  486. reign? He destroyed the world. What's

  487. the difference? This time we reign with

  488. the new Adam, the second Adam. The

  489. critical expression there is with

  490. Christ.

  491. But once you have that, you see what

  492. intense role God is preparing for you

  493. and for me to reign with him forever

  494. more. And I'll come back to that. But

  495. now I want to ask some practical

  496. questions. What does this tell us about

  497. the kind of story we live in? So now

  498. read verse two.

  499. And I saw the holy city, New Jerusalem,

  500. coming down out of heaven from God,

  501. prepared as a bride adorned for her

  502. husband.

  503. If we were studying Revelation, it'd be

  504. so fun to talk about why it's the new

  505. Jerusalem. After all, Jerusalem is the

  506. place where God established his monarchy

  507. with King David. It's the place where

  508. the temple was built and the Holy of

  509. Holies was there and God brought his

  510. presence. It's the place where Christ

  511. became king in the irony of his

  512. crucifixion and his resurrection.

  513. There's so many cool reasons. And

  514. because I'm a professor, I can't help

  515. it. I I have to assign homework. If if

  516. you read the description of the New

  517. Jerusalem and the dimensions and then

  518. you go and you read the description of

  519. the dimensions of the Holy of Holies,

  520. it's the same. I'll just leave it at

  521. that for you to go think about for

  522. yourself. So many cool things that we

  523. could be spending our time talking about

  524. why it's the new Jerusalem. Here's the

  525. one thing I want us to walk away from as

  526. we think about this.

  527. that the kind of story that we're all

  528. living in

  529. is a comedy in the Shakespearean sense.

  530. For Shakespeare, how do you know you're

  531. in a tragedy? Everything ends in and

  532. thank you, Arwin. Death. How do you know

  533. you end in a comedy? You end in a

  534. wedding.

  535. And Shakespeare's greatest tale, The

  536. Winter's Tale, is both tragedy and

  537. comedy, where it appears like there's

  538. death. and what you end up is having a

  539. resurrection and a wedding. And that is

  540. the kind of world that we are told we

  541. live in. And it's hard to believe

  542. because if I just use my eyes and I open

  543. up the news, what does it look like? The

  544. more I read about what's happening, the

  545. border of China and Nepal, the more I

  546. see of the political chaos both within

  547. and without. And when we hear story

  548. after personal story of people suffering

  549. in our church, if you're young enough

  550. and you you're sheltered and protected

  551. enough, you might have more goods than

  552. bads. Live long enough and the bads will

  553. outweigh the good, as everybody old

  554. enough here can attest to.

  555. The tragedies will seem like it

  556. outweighs and wins out. that if you just

  557. go with what you see and what you're

  558. experiencing, you think we're in

  559. a tragic play. What Revelation teaches

  560. us is that we're in a comedy and God has

  561. destined us for a wedding. And again,

  562. we've heard of marriage and wedding. And

  563. in Revelation, there's the marriage of

  564. the lamb. I I want you to understand

  565. just how insane that is. There are some

  566. things I believe because I think I can

  567. reason my way to them. And there's some

  568. things I wouldn't believe unless a

  569. reliable source told me. I I think I

  570. might believe there's something like a

  571. God through reason.

  572. What I would not believe through my own

  573. reason is that perfect being would want

  574. to marry us after we did to him and to

  575. his creation what we did.

  576. Because what do we do after God creates

  577. creation? He creates us and intends us

  578. to be with him forever. We were God's

  579. betrothed and he created for us a house

  580. to live in. And what did we do?

  581. We played the harlot and invited

  582. strangers in to defile us and to defile

  583. the house.

  584. And if that language is harsh, it is the

  585. language of scripture.

  586. We played the harlot who brought in and

  587. made us unclean.

  588. We died about with other suitors and

  589. made us gross and yucky. And then we

  590. allowed them to trash the place and we

  591. partied up and trashed the house with

  592. it.

  593. What God should have done

  594. is said to hell with you

  595. and to be done with it. The insane thing

  596. is that God comes to the harlot and

  597. says, "I still want to marry you. I can

  598. make you clean."

  599. Our world and our story is a comedy. No

  600. matter what tragedy has befallen you,

  601. if you think you are so gross and yucky

  602. because of your addictions

  603. to substances, to pornography, to

  604. deviant sexual activities, to greed and

  605. theft, and you think, well, I'm too far

  606. gone. The mystery of the fact that we

  607. live in a comedy is that God wants to

  608. marry you, to be intimate with you, to

  609. bring you into his household, and to

  610. wash you. I would not believe it unless

  611. there were a reliable source who told

  612. me, and I thanks be to God, that God has

  613. been that reliable source to tell us

  614. that he wants to do that for us.

  615. There's not that there's nobody so far

  616. gone

  617. that it's too late for them as long as

  618. they have breath. God is trying to bring

  619. you into his me into his household. And

  620. of course, the one bride is the church.

  621. But he's inviting us to be members of

  622. that one church to marry us to be with

  623. him forever. That is insane. And if we

  624. just take that for granted because we

  625. grew up in the church hearing it, then

  626. we are missing out on the beauty of the

  627. story that nobody is too far gone.

  628. So that Christ does not do everything in

  629. his power to be with them because he

  630. loves them that much. He loves you that

  631. much no matter what you've done. What

  632. kind of story are you in? You are not in

  633. a tragedy. Do not if the devil tries to

  634. tell you, "Well, you're too broken and

  635. you're too far gone. God wants nothing

  636. to do with you." That is the lie from

  637. the devil. What we know is that God

  638. wants you to wash you, to clean you, and

  639. to make you his very own.

  640. Third,

  641. where does this tell us everything is

  642. headed to? What's the point of all of

  643. this? Read now verse three.

  644. And I heard a loud voice from the throne

  645. saying, "Behold,

  646. the dwelling place of God is with man.

  647. He will dwell with them and they will be

  648. his people and God himself will be with

  649. them as their God.

  650. God is coming here to make this his

  651. home.

  652. Think about how crazy that is.

  653. Suppose God is the homeowner who comes

  654. to marry his betrothed, who's defiled,

  655. who's been defiled, and says, "Ne,

  656. nevertheless, I still want you and want

  657. to marry you, but in this house, ew.

  658. What you've done in this house, gross.

  659. Let's go find a new place." That is not

  660. what God does. God says, "I want to take

  661. this house that I built for you,

  662. and I will renew it. I will restore it.

  663. I will renovate it and make it my home.

  664. And that's what God does. And this isn't

  665. just something that's been sneak attack

  666. at the very end of all things. He has

  667. been trying to break into the house that

  668. is his own. He's not literally breaking

  669. in. He has been creeping in and fixing

  670. it up and showing what it can be like.

  671. It goes all the way back to the Old

  672. Testament, almost as early perhaps, we

  673. might say, as Jacob's vision when he

  674. sees the latter and he sees heaven and

  675. earth coming together. We see it when

  676. God shows up as a pillar of cloud or

  677. fire guiding his people and landing on

  678. the tabernacle. We see it when they

  679. create the temple and God comes to be

  680. with his people in the Holy of Holies.

  681. And we see it most fully in the person

  682. of Jesus. When God and humans are united

  683. in him, humanity and divinity in him,

  684. heaven and earth, [snorts] the point of

  685. contact in him. And then he finally does

  686. what none of us could do, which by his

  687. perfect life, his atoning sacrificial

  688. death, and his resurrection, he can pay

  689. what we could not pay to reconcile us

  690. back to the father so that we need not

  691. be cast out. God has been in this

  692. project of renewal from the very

  693. beginning, culminating in the person of

  694. Jesus. And that renewal project is still

  695. ongoing and will finish when Christ

  696. returns. And the house will be made new.

  697. The house that has all the mold and the

  698. cockroaches and all the excrement and

  699. the filth that we had done to defile the

  700. place. God is tearing down walls

  701. and he is building something new here so

  702. that we can live with him forever.

  703. And when that day comes,

  704. notice the effects. Read verse four.

  705. He will wipe away every tear from their

  706. eyes, and death shall be no more.

  707. Neither shall there be mourning, nor

  708. crying, nor pain anymore,

  709. for the former things

  710. have passed away.

  711. What a world when the house stops having

  712. mold and cockroaches.

  713. Cockroaches. I'm using metaphorically. I

  714. don't know why God has cockroaches in

  715. his creation. But all the gross things

  716. of the world that we have brought in to

  717. destroy and wreck the house, God will do

  718. away with those things and make the

  719. house new, and all of the gross yucky

  720. things gone.

  721. A day will come when cancer will be no

  722. more, when dementia will be no more. I

  723. am gripping on tightly to the fact that

  724. my grandmother, who has dementia, still

  725. remembers my name, but nothing else. She

  726. has no memories of us hanging out long

  727. time ago. Just my name. And I am holding

  728. on for dear life to that one thing. A

  729. day will come when even her mind will be

  730. restored.

  731. A day when all of the heartache and the

  732. brokenness that we have wrought in this

  733. world and in ourselves will be done away

  734. with and it will all be made new.

  735. And then we can sing the last enemy to

  736. be conquered is death.

  737. No more death, no more separation. Union

  738. with God and fellowship with each other.

  739. I want to think now about how thinking

  740. of the new heaven and the new earth

  741. transforms how we should live right now.

  742. And here's one hopefully very obvious

  743. [sighs and gasps]

  744. obvious implication.

  745. We should neither disdain this world

  746. nor overly cherish it.

  747. I think those are the twin temptations

  748. that new heaven and new earth can

  749. prevent us. I think some people again

  750. disdain this world. This world is

  751. pathetic. I can't wait to get rid of

  752. this body. I can't wait to get out of

  753. this place. It's just a trash dump, a

  754. bin for burning. Let's leave. That is

  755. not how scripture talks about that.

  756. While this home def very much is in

  757. disarray, the mold

  758. is spread through all the walls, this is

  759. still home. And God is doing his renewal

  760. project and he wants us here and this

  761. will one day be his ultimate home where

  762. we will live with him forever.

  763. So we cannot disdain this world, but we

  764. cannot overly cherish things of this

  765. world either

  766. because it will be renewed. The

  767. renovation will happen. Maybe you're

  768. overly attached to this wall because

  769. it's my wall. But maybe the renovation

  770. project requires that you knock down

  771. that wall. And if you overly cherish

  772. that wall, it will hurt. It is idolatry.

  773. I don't know why marriage is not to come

  774. in the life of the world to come. We are

  775. not married in the life of the world to

  776. come. And that's sad. That's very, very

  777. sad. If you want to cling on and overly

  778. cherish to the goods of this world, the

  779. wall was good at the time. Now it must

  780. be knocked down. Marriage must go.

  781. But what will come will be even better.

  782. God promises us that what will be what

  783. will come will be better. It's like the

  784. fetus in the womb who doesn't want to

  785. leave because it was so warm and snuggly

  786. and cozy inside of mommy. But the world

  787. out here is so much better. You can

  788. actually use your hands and feet. You

  789. can actually use your mouth and your

  790. eyes. The world to come will be so much

  791. better. Don't overly cherish the goods

  792. that are here for now but will go.

  793. It's just Cheetos. My My kids love

  794. Cheetos.

  795. And God is saying, "But I have filet

  796. minan waiting for you." And we lament

  797. when God takes the Cheetos. God has

  798. something even better in store for you.

  799. Do not overly cherish the things of this

  800. world. Here's the second thing that I

  801. think we can learn in light of the new

  802. heaven and the new earth.

  803. The tasks you perform in this life

  804. is helping you prepare to reign with

  805. Christ forever.

  806. That radically elevates and makes all of

  807. your work much more significant than you

  808. might realize.

  809. If you're a student, don't bother with

  810. grades. Grades are is is one of the most

  811. foolish things ever invented in

  812. education.

  813. Why should you study?

  814. Because I actually think studying

  815. transforms you, draws you, makes you

  816. more like God, and prepares you for what

  817. he has in store for you by cultivating

  818. your character into Christlikkeness.

  819. I won't get into it now, but I am

  820. convinced if you study physics and you

  821. study literature and you study history,

  822. you study logic, it is doing something

  823. to you in preparation to reign with

  824. Christ. So stop caring about getting the

  825. right grade and think this is all in

  826. preparation for what I will do with

  827. Christ in the life of the world to come.

  828. If you're working

  829. to make ends meet to meet the quarterly

  830. goals to make your employer happy so

  831. that you acquire more promotions or get

  832. more prestige. What a foolish task

  833. when God is using all of those

  834. activities, if they're good, to prepare

  835. you to reign with him forever.

  836. There seems to be sometimes for some

  837. people no glory in changing diapers and

  838. sweeping the floor. My kids hate

  839. sweeping the floor. And yet every task

  840. we perform

  841. if we give it up for Christ can be in

  842. preparation for our reigning task with

  843. him forever more. This is why Paul says

  844. in 1 Corinthians 15:58, "Therefore,

    1 Corinthians 15:58

  845. brothers and sisters, be steadfast,

  846. immovable, always abounding in the work

  847. of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord

  848. your labor is not in vain."

  849. And I think sometimes you're like, well,

  850. what's working the Lord? Oh, that's that

  851. must be what pastors do. No, if you go

  852. to Paul's language, the work of the Lord

  853. is the act of offering and sacrifice.

  854. sacrifice.

  855. Now, what do we learn in the New

  856. Testament? We don't just engage in

  857. animal sacrifice. We don't engage in it

  858. at all. The New Testament talked about

  859. the sacrifice of praise.

  860. Some of the times in the New Testament,

  861. it talks about prayer as a kind of

  862. sacrifice and offering. And ultimately,

  863. we know in Romans 12, we offer our

  864. living bodies as a sacrifice, holy and

  865. acceptable to God. That means everything

  866. you do can be a sacrifice, an offering

  867. to God by which God is preparing you

  868. for reigning with him forever more. And

  869. I want to finish with this final

  870. implication.

  871. If you really believe, and I think you

  872. have every reason to believe because

  873. it's coming from reliable source, and

  874. it's not me. I'm not that reliable

  875. source. But you believe that God intends

  876. to marry you to make you as a member of

  877. his bride and wants to restore the home

  878. so that you can live in there and admin

  879. administer in there. Be the image God

  880. bear. Be the one who has dominion with

  881. Christ over the earth forever. If you

  882. really believe that, then hopefully, as

  883. I've been trying to say over and over

  884. again, nobody is too far gone that

  885. Christ doesn't want to come to you. The

  886. biggest gap

  887. relationally was God and humans and

  888. Jesus bridged that gap.

  889. Every other separation is a smaller gap

  890. than that. If God can bridge the biggest

  891. gap, every other gap can be bridged.

  892. What do we do then as people still

  893. living in the first heaven and first

  894. earth awaiting the new heaven and new

  895. earth is we are recognizing Christ's

  896. renewal project which is also a re

  897. reconciliation project. We are members

  898. of the ministry of reconciliation. If

  899. God can reconcile humanity to his very

  900. self then we need to be doing what

  901. Christ does and reconciling first and

  902. foremost brothers and sisters in the

  903. church to each other. Why are we

  904. fighting amongst ourselves when the

  905. world will know that we are disciples by

  906. our love for one another?

  907. If there is a brother and a sister in

  908. Christ to whom we are not reconciled,

  909. well, what do we read in Matthew 5? What

  910. are you waiting for?

  911. It's not as though it's going to get

  912. reconciled right away. I don't know. I

  913. don't know when Christ will return and

  914. renew the world. I don't know. But as

  915. followers of Jesus who believe in the

  916. new heaven and new earth, we believe

  917. reconciliation can happen and he can do

  918. it. And so pray.

  919. Pray. And then if there are people in

  920. your lives that need to be reconciled to

  921. God, do not give hope. As long as you

  922. have breath and as long as they have

  923. breath, we will be engaged in the task

  924. of reconciliation to bring them back to

  925. God. And we can't do it. Our task is not

  926. to convert anybody. That's what the Holy

  927. Spirit does. Our task is merely to

  928. proclaim and demonstrate the good news

  929. of Jesus that nobody is so far gone that

  930. Christ would abandon them. He would

  931. leave the 99 to save the one. And so I

  932. hope that as you consider the life of

  933. the world to come, we are people of

  934. hope, believing in a God who reconciles,

  935. a God who renews our bodies and the

  936. world, and who plans to make his home

  937. here with you and me. Let's pray.
