  1. good

  2. morning I know it's already been said

  3. but Happy New Year um I'm up here just

  4. to introduce us for those of you you who

  5. don't know we are the chus Tina and

  6. Martin and we have the great PIV

  7. privilege of serving in the Spanish

  8. speaking

  9. Ministry yes yes as well as as of this

  10. month we're also helping to serve and

  11. support the South and they have

  12. graciously welcomed us so thank you

  13. thank you thank you for

  14. that but I wanted just to take a moment

  15. to encourage all of us to be here

  16. now um I don't know about you but

  17. hearing about the fires and other things

  18. that are happening in our lives has been

  19. a little

  20. overwhelming and for me going to sleep

  21. last night all I thought about was all

  22. the things I had to do today and the

  23. rest of the week and then waking up this

  24. morning all I thought about was all

  25. things I have to do after service and so

  26. sometimes coming in on a Sunday when it

  27. should be a day of rest and worship can

  28. feel very busy and hectic and then if

  29. you're like me and you're parent and you

  30. have two little ones you're trying to

  31. get out of the house it's even more but

  32. I want to encourage you like I said to

  33. be here now God's word going to be spoke

  34. spoken um Marine will be teaching and

  35. preaching which I'm excited to hear but

  36. of course as less about him and more

  37. about God and what he will be saying to

  38. each of us where we are currently in our

  39. life and in our season so take a breath

  40. with me if you

  41. will and be here and be ready to embrace

  42. what God will say to you and how he will

  43. lead you not only today but through the

  44. rest of this week and aort to the rest

  45. of our lives so happy New Year here's

  46. Mar all

  47. right you guys hear me well good morning

  48. please turn your Bibles to John chapter

    John 15 chapter mention

  49. 15 I do want want to say a special shout

  50. out uh to our translators who are

  51. translating in Korean and in Spanish

  52. it's great to be part of a church uh we

  53. are one church with three languages uh

  54. and as we come together we have

  55. translation like this but the rest of

  56. the month uh we honor language uh God

  57. does not call us to assimilate but

  58. honors and speaks to us in our native

  59. languages and so to be able to have a

  60. Spanish and a Korean in um church and

  61. service in those languages is quite a

  62. privilege and a blessing

  63. amen John chapter 15 I have a question

    John 15 chapter mention

  64. for you as we get started has this ever

  65. happened to you someone you trust in

  66. know well tells you something about

  67. another person that you also trust and

  68. know well but what this person tells you

  69. about that person doesn't really sound

  70. like that person at

  71. all has that ever happened to you can

  72. you raise your hand has that happened to

  73. you it's a mess

  74. right this happened to me reading the

  75. Gospel of

  76. John

  77. for us in the Spanish Ministry we spent

  78. two years in the Gospel of John and so

  79. we have 40 different lessons in the

  80. Gospel of John 40 different Sundays

  81. between 203

  82. 2023 and 202

  83. 24 and as I'm reading you know trying to

  84. stay ahead of where we are in the church

  85. and so I've been read you know there's

  86. kind of a pattern that I have read the

  87. entire gospel one time get five or six

  88. different commentaries from different

  89. sources spend at least two three hours a

  90. week diving into each chapter

  91. understanding the big picture I mean

  92. it's just been beautiful it's been great

  93. but as I got to chapter 15

  94. I had that experience based on that

  95. question Jesus did not sound like he has

  96. been sounding from chapter 1 to chapter

  97. 14 and I just couldn't shake it and I

  98. kept reading and I'm like why is this

  99. why is there a why is there a knot in my

  100. stomach when I read

  101. John chapter

    John 15 chapter mention

  102. 15 and so I took a deep dive and I want

  103. to you know walk us through that deep

  104. dive of John 15 here today

  105. amen and so as I said you know we spent

  106. all this time in the Gospel of John and

  107. I I'll share some thoughts and some

  108. themes in the Gospel of John but first I

  109. want to be able to

  110. read John

  111. 15 let's see how you hear it and how you

  112. feel about it verse

  113. one Jesus says I am the True Vine

  114. and my father is the gardener he cuts

  115. off every branch in me that bears no

  116. fruit while every branch that does not

  117. bear fruit he

  118. prunes so that it will be more

  119. fruitful you are already clean because

  120. of the word I have spoken to you remain

  121. in me as I also remain in you no Branch

  122. can bear fruit by itself it must remain

  123. in the vine neither can you bear fruit

  124. unless you remain in me I am the vine

  125. you are the branches if you remain in me

  126. and I in you you will bear much fruit

  127. apart from me you can do nothing if you

  128. do not remain in me you are like a

  129. branch that is thrown away and Withers

  130. such branches are picked up thrown into

  131. the fire and burned if you remain in me

  132. and my words remain in you ask whatever

  133. you wish and it will be done for you

  134. this is to my father's Glory that you

  135. bear much

  136. fruit showing yourselves to be my

  137. disciples and there's more but we'll

  138. stop there so again we've all had that

  139. experience right someone we know and

  140. trust tells us something about someone

  141. else we know and trust us but what this

  142. person is telling us about this person

  143. doesn't really sound like that's them

  144. again that happened to me I'm reading

  145. John chapter

    John 1 chapter mention

  146. 1-4 and when I get to chapter

  147. 15 I kind of hit a

  148. wall and up comes this

  149. image of a God that I should be afraid

  150. of because if I'm not close to this God

  151. he's going to cut me

  152. off but if I'm close to this God God and

  153. I bear fruit now watch out now he's

  154. going to prune you so you can bear even

  155. more

  156. fruit that's how I was reading it that's

  157. how I was interpreted I think that's how

  158. we have heard it I would even venture to

  159. say that's how we've taught

  160. it and so it made no sense maybe I'm

  161. alone here maybe you can

  162. relate then we were we were having a

  163. zoom call and those meetings always go

  164. great

  165. and so we're in a zoom call and you know

  166. it's it was the beginning of the year of

  167. I think it was last year or so and so we

  168. read this passage wanting to be

  169. encouraging wanting to make the points

  170. of remaining in God and abiding in God

  171. abide means delighting in God but we

  172. just all of us sort of just felt like we

  173. couldn't get past this

  174. imagery of watch out with God watch out

  175. with this

  176. Gardener because if you're not

  177. behaving he's gonna cut you off and not

  178. just that tossed you into the

  179. fire to get

  180. burned and that doesn't make sense that

  181. does not sound like God because God in j

  182. John Chapter 13 has told us I have come

    John 13 chapter mention

  183. to save the world not to condemn

  184. the

  185. world and so today it is my

  186. hope to circle around this theme of

  187. trusting in God by looking into this

  188. picture and hopefully we

  189. restore this

  190. passage and we can cast off the image of

  191. a god who's out to cut and to pruned

  192. just so you can

  193. produce and restore the true meaning of

  194. this passage message The God Who in

  195. chapter 14 says I give you my peace who

  196. here he says I give you my love and I

  197. give you my joy and if you're familiar

  198. with the fruits of the spirit those are

  199. the first three The God Who says I love

  200. you remain in me because I Delight in

  201. you Delight in me as I Delight in you

  202. the god who's not looking for us to be

  203. performative but the god who's looking

  204. to form us into his

  205. likeness so today our task is to restore

  206. John chapter for 15 and the correct

  207. imagery so we have a lot a little bit of

  208. work to do

  209. amen so let's start with this theme of

  210. The Gospel of John and then we'll come

  211. back and dive deep into the meaning of

  212. these words in John chapter 15 so let me

    John 15 chapter mention

  213. tell you about the Gospel of John a

  214. little bit there's a ton of questions in

  215. the Gospel of John in fact Jesus asked

  216. about 52 questions and so there's a

  217. theme about

  218. questions but the first human question

  219. is Jesus is walking and there's two of

  220. John the Baptist disciples who have just

  221. been told look the Lamb of God who takes

  222. away the sin of the world and so they're

  223. following

  224. Jesus and so they don't initiate because

  225. they're too shy God turns around God

  226. initiates and they

  227. say where are you

  228. staying and that is the first human

  229. question God where are you you see the

  230. Gospel of John is written in a way where

  231. on the surface it makes perfect sense

  232. it's very clear but it's intended that

  233. way to invite you to a deeper meaning

  234. because when the gospel of joh John says

  235. that these disciples asked Jesus hey

  236. where are you staying on the surface

  237. where are you staying and if you read

  238. the gospel that sounds kind of like an

  239. awkward

  240. question but the deeper meaning is it's

  241. what the gospel is trying to answer

  242. where is God

  243. located where is God because it just

  244. told us that the word has become flesh

  245. that God has made his dwelling among us

  246. and that's not the arrival of God

  247. because that would imply that God was

  248. absent it is the revelation of God that

  249. God reveals godself in human

  250. flesh and so now the question is where

  251. is God and so this theme of location

  252. continues

  253. because Jesus goes and speaks to this

  254. man named Nathaniel and Nathaniel is

  255. Prejudice he probably inherited but he's

  256. like

  257. Nazareth north of sea just kidding so he

  258. says not that Nazareth what can come

  259. from there well Jesus is from

  260. there right and again this idea of

  261. location God isn't supposed to work in

  262. that

  263. area

  264. right and

  265. so Jesus says you're going to see great

  266. things in fact you're going to see

  267. the angels of

  268. God

  269. ascending and descending did you get

  270. that Jesus doesn't say you're going to

  271. see the Angels

  272. descending and ascending Jesus says

  273. you're going to see the Angels

  274. ascending and descend because the

  275. beginning of the commute of the Angels

  276. is the god the presence of God and so if

  277. the angels are ascending and descending

  278. where is God here

  279. and then Jesus goes to the temple the

  280. historical site of the presence of God

  281. and what does he do he flips the tables

  282. I just bought this one I'm not going to

  283. toss it we have to be financially

  284. responsible and so he flips the

  285. tables and in there he describes he

  286. drove out cattle and doves doves

  287. represents what the holy SP Spirit what

  288. is God doing in the temple leaving the

  289. temple God says you have turned this

  290. place into a market it is no longer the

  291. house of God and again this question if

  292. this is not the house of God then where

  293. is the house of God leading us to

  294. chapter 14 in my father's house are many

  295. rooms and we're going to get to

  296. that but this idea where is God because

  297. if we're going to trust in God we got to

  298. identify where God is

  299. and God is not an absent or distant

  300. God God is a living present and active

  301. God

  302. restoring the Brokenness of the

  303. world in our

  304. lives and so the disciples say man

  305. they're reminded later Zeal for his

  306. house will consume me I think there is

  307. also a big misunderstanding there we

  308. tend to think Z for his house will

  309. consume me that God was filled with

  310. righteous

  311. [Music]

  312. anger and that can justify us feeling

  313. like we can have

  314. that but perhaps Zeal for his house will

  315. consume me was not a Zeal the god that

  316. Jesus has but it was the Temple Police

  317. the leadership the guards that they were

  318. zealous to the point of

  319. violence so Zeal for your house will

  320. consume me they wanted to protect and

  321. control and domesticate God to the point

  322. that they executed God to want to keep

  323. their

  324. status a lot of that going

  325. around and so then Jesus interacts with

  326. the Samaritan woman in chapter 4 and

  327. she's over associating the presence of

  328. God in the mountain of her people and

  329. God says nope that's not the place of

  330. God but neither is the Jewish Mountain

  331. Mountain there's going to be a third

  332. Mountain where all people will be able

  333. to Worship in spirit and in truth do you

  334. see this theme of with the location of

  335. God and we can skip over to John chapter

    John 10 chapter mention

  336. 10 the Good Shepherd where it's

  337. describing Jesus walking his people out

  338. of the temple system that is outdated

  339. broken corrupt no longer the place of

  340. God and the Good Shepherd knows his

  341. flock they know him he knows them by

  342. name they listen to to his voice he's

  343. the shepherd he's the door he's the gate

  344. he's and so he brings them into a new

  345. location where God is present so that

  346. they are no

  347. longer

  348. confined to that Temple system that is

  349. no longer about God but it's a

  350. market and God walks them over because

  351. God Is With Us leading us God's over

  352. always moving God's

  353. people things come to an end and that's

  354. no long that doesn't necessarily be a

  355. bad thing God's good and faithful and he

  356. moves us to the new

  357. things you see

  358. that and then the resurrection my

  359. favorite character in The Gospel of John

  360. Mary Magdalene she runs to the

  361. resurrected Lord and has on the surface

  362. kind of an awkward interaction Jesus

  363. says don't hold on to me

  364. right I have not yet ascended to the

  365. father and I think it's implying that

  366. Mary Magdalene was so Overjoyed that

  367. Jesus is back that she thought things

  368. were going to be the same before the

  369. cross and we tend to do that as human in

  370. our human nature we tend to want to go

  371. back to the past and relive the good old

  372. days and sometimes we don't discern

  373. discern that the present Living God is

  374. doing something new are you with me

  375. right

  376. here and so God is always doing

  377. something new moving

  378. us but God is always living present and

  379. active and then Jesus gets into this dis

  380. discourse of the kind of it's called

  381. kind of the farewell discourse from

  382. chapter 13 till about chapter 18 or 17

  383. and he begins to say I am returning to

  384. the father and we understand that as

  385. he's

  386. leaving and I think that's a dominant

  387. image that is hurting our Christianity

  388. our faith how we interpret scripture how

  389. we uh view God and how we see ourselves

  390. think about how important all those

  391. things are and I think there's this

  392. ongoing imagination where we feel like

  393. God

  394. left he ascended he

  395. left but but he left me with a

  396. mission to fulfill the mission he was

  397. not able to complete and now it's up to

  398. me to save the world for the absent God

  399. who one day will

  400. return and when we live that way after a

  401. decade or two you're just burned out

  402. because you can't carry on what is

  403. God's but that's a wrong and God never

  404. left God is a living present God and so

  405. when Jesus talks about the Ascension

  406. he's not t or departure that sounds like

  407. leaving that doesn't that is not what it

  408. means what it means is departure and

  409. Ascension is God this is us this is

  410. Earth and here's Jesus and we we see him

  411. departure and Ascension means a return

  412. to invisibility but still

  413. present and so our God in his Ascension

  414. and departure justes did not leave he he

  415. just now

  416. invisible and why is that important

  417. because the word became flesh the

  418. Incarnation is super important but the

  419. Incarnation is limited to a geographical

  420. location and to a historical time you

  421. get that Jesus was bound to a

  422. geographical location and time but in

  423. taking the Cross and in the pouring out

  424. of God s the Holy Spirit God is now

  425. present in all at all times in all

  426. places so where is your god brothers and

  427. sisters we can trust in the living

  428. present and

  429. active

  430. God so when I read John 15 I'm like why

  431. do I feel

  432. scared because I think what has happened

  433. generally

  434. speaking is I think we have read most of

  435. the Bible with predetermined

  436. answers and it no longer surprises many

  437. of us it no longer encourages I was

  438. there I confess I was bored reading the

  439. gospels I felt like I already knew what

  440. they were I felt like I already knew

  441. what they said that sounds so arrogant

  442. like I didn't say this out loud because

  443. I would have felt like private that's

  444. how I felt so I would just skip through

  445. them

  446. but the gospels are so unique all four

  447. of them are very different and distinct

  448. for a purpose I know some of us are

  449. great fans of the show the show The

  450. Chosen I've never seen an episode I hear

  451. great things about it I am not saying

  452. you shouldn't I'm just letting you know

  453. making a point here that the go The

  454. Chosen seems to just blend all

  455. four that's cool I'm sure it's really

  456. encouraging keep watching it this is the

  457. abundance of God there's a lot of

  458. goodness out

  459. there but just note the gospels were

  460. intended to be distinct for a reason not

  461. to be

  462. Blended because every gospel is written

  463. for a unique audience going through

  464. something unique and

  465. different it's intended that way so that

  466. every church and every generation has an

  467. interaction with the living and present

  468. God through the gospels so we can ask

  469. ourselves as a region in OC what gospel

  470. world are we in in our local Ministries

  471. what gospel world are we in for the

  472. South o sea we have discerned that we

  473. are in the gospel of Mark and we're

  474. going to be walking with Jesus in The

  475. Gospel of

  476. Mark I say all that to

  477. say let's learn or

  478. reread the gospels without predetermined

  479. answers I think John 15 sometimes sounds

  480. harsh to many of us because it has been

  481. influenced with ancient stones from

  482. interpreters preachers like me who go to

  483. that passage to warn you to

  484. behave otherwise you're going to get cut

  485. off and to be humble and sacrificial

  486. because if you're bearing fruit God's

  487. going to keep pruning you because what

  488. matters is the fruit

  489. which is ironic because it's the

  490. opposite of what Jesus is saying the

  491. goal is remaining and yes bearing fruit

  492. that when you're accompanied by God but

  493. again let's put some pieces together if

  494. we believe God left and is absent and is

  495. up to us to do the work how are you

  496. going to bear fruit how are you going to

  497. remain in

  498. God but if God is living present and

  499. active and in Mission yes we need to be

  500. connected with God yes God calls us to

  501. Bear good fruit because he's wor working

  502. in our lives he's working in the lives

  503. of our family members of our classmates

  504. of our schools of our communities and so

  505. we need to learn how to join what God is

  506. doing God is in

  507. mission right and so when we share our

  508. hope and our faith and our perspective

  509. and our convictions and our lives with

  510. others we're not the teachers to show

  511. them what we're partners with them

  512. helping them discern what is God up to

  513. in your life

  514. and then it becomes a conversation about

  515. God and hey let me show you these

  516. scriptures that may give you some

  517. answers to what God might be up to you

  518. see what I'm saying there is a healthier

  519. better way that is more God centered and

  520. there's a lot of work that we got to do

  521. for that we can get into another time

  522. and

  523. finally why does this passage sound so

  524. complicated and scary it's a lot of

  525. times taken out of

  526. context

  527. right and here's for the second and

  528. third decade students there's a

  529. mistranslation In this passage okay

  530. there's many not going to explain all

  531. the translations and all that but here

  532. it

  533. goes the NIV says he cuts off every

  534. branch in me that bears no fruit while

  535. every branch that does not fruit he

  536. prunes so that it will be even more

  537. fruitful cut

  538. off is an an accurate

  539. translation in most of our

  540. Bibles all right this is why it's

  541. important to get dive in and study and

  542. all these different

  543. things that

  544. word shouldn't say cut off it should say

  545. lift up take away carry or clean it's

  546. the word Arrow I you know my my Greek

  547. has a Spanish

  548. accent okay so John uses this era

  549. multiple times and it never means cut

  550. off let me give you some

  551. examples in John chapter 1 Behold the

    John 1 chapter mention

  552. Lamb of God who takes away who lifts up

  553. the sin of the world John 21:16 take

    John 21:16

  554. these things away stop making my

  555. father's house into a Market or trade

  556. Jesus said to him get up when he's

  557. talking to the paralytic take your mat

  558. and walk lift

  559. up you see

  560. that John 10:18 no one takes from me but

    John 10:18

  561. I lay down my life on my own accord by

  562. the way Jesus was joyfully taking the

  563. Cross in John chapter 10 in in the

    John 10 chapter mention

  564. Gospel of John every branch in me that

  565. bears no fruit he takes up takes away so

  566. let's see this let's change the

  567. translation oh by the

  568. way if we want to argue no it means cut

  569. off actually John knows how to write cut

  570. off in the Greek he uses it in John

    John 18:10

  571. 18:10 then Simon Peter who had a sword

  572. drew it and struck the servants priests

  573. cutting off and yet that's not the word

  574. that's used in John chapter 15

    John 15 chapter mention

  575. verse ah by the way Peter was not aiming

  576. for the ear he was aiming for the throat

  577. this man was a believer in God but still

  578. had violence that's why Jesus had to

  579. come and appear to him and restore him

  580. because he believed in God but he was

  581. still about violence like the temple

  582. system that's a whole other sermon right

  583. there but I guess you got a free one

  584. happy New Year and so John knows how to

  585. write cut

  586. off so let's adjust

  587. it I am the True Vine and my father is

  588. the gardener he lifts

  589. up every branch in

  590. me that bears no fruit well every branch

  591. that does bear fruit he prunes so that

  592. it will be even more

  593. fruitful so God The Gardener the vine

  594. dresser he's not out looking let's see

  595. if you measure up now you're getting

  596. cut but he's looking hey you're ill

  597. spiritually you're

  598. disconnected you're spiritually

  599. blind you are

  600. hard-hearted cynical and

  601. critical you have just gone you've been

  602. going through the motions for so

  603. long God's not upset with you at that

  604. and he's not going to cut you off what

  605. is he going to do he's going to lift you

  606. up let's talk

  607. about Vines here so in those days in

  608. that gen in that era there's not a whole

  609. lot of wood if you go to you know

  610. Wineries and all that here you see all

  611. the the woods in and kind of the vines

  612. on the top because you don't want those

  613. branches to touch the floor because if

  614. they stay remain in the floor for a long

  615. time they start growing

  616. roots and now you're connected to the

  617. vine but you're connect you have your

  618. own roots

  619. you see what I'm saying so they didn't

  620. use wood what they would do is they

  621. would get rocks a lot of rocks in the

  622. Middle East and so you lift up those

  623. branches that were ill and you place

  624. them on a rock something like this I

  625. hope I don't get electrocuted or burn

  626. the place down right now you put a rock

  627. under it there because it's ill so it

  628. can so we can get

  629. sunlight so it doesn't develop other

  630. Roots but it stays connected to the

  631. root so that it gets

  632. nutrients so that it can

  633. remain because God is God who wants to

  634. save the world not condemn the

  635. world and so as that work took place I

  636. can now read John

  637. 15 it's still convicting it's inspiring

  638. but it's not threatening me and giving

  639. me an image that is not true or accurate

  640. to the character and actions of the

  641. living present

  642. [Applause]

  643. God and so if God lifts up every branch

  644. that bears no fruit when we are ill and

  645. when we become those things and we will

  646. and we have been and we will again that

  647. I just described the faithful good God

  648. lifts us

  649. up now we must respond to that lifting

  650. up we must choose to be lifted

  651. up we must choose to get the help to get

  652. the correction to get the you know to

  653. remain connected to

  654. God and then later it describes right if

  655. you are if you do get disconnected you

  656. die off that's not God not's doing

  657. that's our

  658. doing that's the consequences of our

  659. decision so we have a healthy

  660. relationship and image of God and we

  661. have a healthy responsibility of

  662. ourselves that's a good

  663. match that's good Christianity right

  664. there but if you choose to be

  665. disconnected yeah the Bible describes

  666. you die off and it says you are picked

  667. up and thrown into the fire but please

  668. note it does not say God picks you up

  669. and throws you into a fire if you read

  670. it in the context it's just

  671. consequential that's not of God's doing

  672. so it's not God who cuts you off and

  673. it's not God who toss tosses you into

  674. the fire so can we please not have that

  675. kind of image of God because that's not

  676. true to

  677. scripture so fear and threats should not

  678. be the way we motivate one

  679. another but helping us see

  680. the presence of the Living

  681. God the activity of the Living God the

  682. unfailing love of the Living God and it

  683. is truly our responsibility to respond

  684. and be faithful and loyal to the God who

  685. loves us and so the God is the gardener

  686. the vine dresser he carries each branch

  687. that's ill he lifts them to receive

  688. sunlight and nutrients lifts them to

  689. avoid competing Roots he lifts them to

  690. ensure a thriving connection with the

  691. vine producing healthy fruit and some of

  692. that fruit is Jesus gives us his peace

  693. there's no anxiety worry because when we

  694. start fearing you start making bad

  695. decisions you start trying to take your

  696. back your life back and try to control

  697. outcomes and you become someone you were

  698. not created to be

  699. God says I give you my love because if

  700. we're not connected and believe that God

  701. loves us we end up looking for love in

  702. all these different places and meaning

  703. and belonging in all these different

  704. places that only leave us more scarred

  705. and

  706. hurt but if we allow God to love

  707. us then we can bear that fruit and God

  708. says I give you

  709. my

  710. joy all all of that is fruits of the

  711. spirit that come about from us Abiding

  712. delighting and remaining and being

  713. connected with

  714. God and again this is not just I'm just

  715. receiving no it's

  716. participating it's participating because

  717. God that fruit is what that fruit is for

  718. the sake of others to feed to strengthen

  719. to encourage to invite others

  720. it's not selfs serving it's outward

  721. Focus not with you as the Savior and the

  722. protagonist but with God leading the

  723. way so I think today we R read this

  724. passage and maybe the entire Gospel of

  725. John with fresh eyes we were discovered

  726. a more accurate meaning and we released

  727. anxious tones that other others have

  728. imposed on passages like this let's

  729. approach John 15 with a deeper

  730. understanding of of God's character may

  731. we cultivate a healthier image of God

  732. honoring the scriptures especially the

  733. gospels may we allow God to continue

  734. transforming how we see God how we see

  735. ourselves and others he who has ears let

  736. let him hear the word of the Lord here's

  737. my

  738. [Applause]

  739. wife well um I wanted to just help guide

  740. us as we go into communion right now

  741. we're GNA have a few moments to have a

  742. time of reflection and thank you my for

  743. all the things that you've shared um

  744. this year will be my 25th year of being

  745. a Christian and similar to what Martin

  746. said about himself after reading God's

  747. word every day for decades you can

  748. sometimes be a little disillusioned or

  749. at least I was about what I read and

  750. with these pre- determined answers of

  751. what God is saying and many times going

  752. to God's word trying to find out what do

  753. I need today versus all letting versus

  754. allowing God's word to take me and these

  755. last few years of going deeper into

  756. God's word reading God's word slower

  757. trying to learn and be present in what

  758. God is trying to reveal has literally

  759. been

  760. life-changing and even reading passages

  761. like we read today it may be one passage

  762. but reading it and being present and

  763. asking God to take us versus us taking

  764. god um can really change our the way

  765. that we re read God's word so we have

  766. three questions up here and I'm going to

  767. read them

  768. what's so the first one is what

  769. surprised you the most from today's

  770. lesson study and

  771. why and we like to ask this question

  772. because God is always working and

  773. sometimes there's something that

  774. surprises you that you never thought of

  775. you never considered right

  776. second if we truly believe that God is

  777. living present and active in our lives

  778. and the

  779. world how does that reshape the way we

  780. connect with God person

  781. personally as a church and how we share

  782. about God with

  783. others and lastly number three how does

  784. the contrast between cut off and lift up

  785. in John 15 deepen your understanding of

  786. God's actions and

  787. character why is it important to

  788. understand the difference between these

  789. two images and how does it influence how

  790. you will sorry how we perceive God's

  791. work in our lives so a practice that we

  792. like to do is take a moment a few

  793. moments and with someone near you around

  794. you you don't need to get up answer just

  795. one of these

  796. questions so someone next to you someone

  797. across from you someone behind someone

  798. with someone behind you answer one of

  799. these questions and then we'll have time

  800. to pray for communion so I'll give you

  801. about three minutes four minutes thank

  802. you
