  2. today is Monday of Holy Week and we'll

  3. be looking at Mark 11 which is about the

  4. fig tree and the temple jesus's

  5. interaction with the fig fig tree

  6. bookends his actions in the temple and

  7. scholars call this a Markin sandwich

  8. which is a literary device seen

  9. throughout Mark that has two unrelated

  10. stories one story bookending the other

  11. to shed significance on the middle story

  12. listen to Mark 11 12 on the next day

  13. when they left Bethany he became hungry

  14. seeing from a distance a fig tree and

  15. leaf he went to see if perhaps he could

  16. find anything on it and when he came to

  17. it he found nothing but leaves for it

  18. was not the season for figs and he said

  19. to it "May no one ever eat fruit from

  20. you again." And his disciples were

  21. listening then they came to Jerusalem

  22. and he entered the temple area and began

  23. to drive out those who were selling and

  24. buying on the temple grounds and he

  25. overturned the temples of the money

  26. changers and the seats of those who were

  27. selling doves and he would not allow

  28. anyone to carry merchandise through the

  29. temple grounds and he began to teach and

  30. say to them "Is it not written my house

  31. will be called a house of prayer for all

  32. the nations but you have made it a den

  33. of

  34. robbers?" And the chief priests and the

  35. scribes heard this and they began

  36. seeking how to put him to death for they

  37. were afraid of him because all the crowd

  38. was astonished at his teaching and

  39. whenever evening came they would leave

  40. the

  41. city as they were passing by in the

  42. morning they saw the fig tree withered

  43. from the roots up and being reminded

  44. Peter said to him "Rabbi look the fig

  45. tree you cursed has withered." And Jesus

  46. answered and said to them "Have faith in

  47. God truly I say to you whoever says to

  48. this mountain "Be taken up and thrown

  49. into the sea," and does not doubt in his

  50. heart but believes that what he says is

  51. going to happen it will be granted to

  52. him therefore I say to you all things

  53. for which you pray and ask believe that

  54. you have received them and they will be

  55. granted to you and whenever you stand

  56. praying forgive if you have anything

  57. against anyone so that your father who

  58. is in heaven will also forgive you your

  59. offenses but if you do not forgive

  60. neither will your father who is in

  61. heaven forgive your

  62. offenses this passage begins and ends

  63. with the fig tree which on its surface

  64. is a curious story which makes Jesus

  65. look odd and cranky why look for figs at

  66. a season why take your frustration out

  67. on a plant if Jesus was hungry he could

  68. have manifested figs on the tree so what

  69. is the significance of the story jesus

  70. was behaving like an old school prophet

  71. creating a symbolic reenactment of God's

  72. judgment like Ezekiel who God told to

  73. lay on his side for 390 days to quote

  74. "bear the sins of Israel."

  75. Jesus performed this same kind of

  76. prophetic symbolism and we can make

  77. sense of it by looking at Micah 6

  78. and7 in Micah

    Micah 6:2

  79. 6:2 it says "Listen you mountains to the

  80. indictment by the Lord because the Lord

  81. has a case against his people."

  82. God then goes on to mention the Exodus

  83. and how he saved Israel over and over on

  84. their journey to the promised land then

  85. God poses a question what does this

  86. righteous God expect in return in verse

  87. seven and 8 it says "Does the Lord take

  88. pleasure in thousands of rams in 10,000

  89. rivers of oil he has told you mortal one

  90. what is good to do justice to love

  91. kindness and to walk humbly with your

  92. God he then spends the rest of the

  93. chapter describing the injustice the

  94. violence and the idolatry of Israel all

  95. of which was deserving of punishment

  96. then in Micah 7 there is this theme of

  97. the prophet looking for fruit and

  98. finding only

  99. fruitlessness the prophet Micah says in

  100. verse one "Woe to me for I am like

  101. harvest of summer fruit like gleanings

  102. of grapes there is not a cluster of

  103. grapes left to eat nor an early fig

  104. which I

  105. crave." Notice that last line not an

  106. early fig which I crave you can hear the

  107. echo of the early fig of Micah in Mark

  108. 11 mark uniquely points out that it was

  109. not the season for figs but since the

  110. tree had leaves it was possible for

  111. there to be fruit on it like the prophet

  112. Micah Jesus was hungry for righteousness

  113. and looking for the fruit of it in the

  114. temple and he was looking for it in his

  115. own timing jesus came to the temple late

  116. in the day so late in fact that he

  117. turned around and left possibly

  118. signifying that it was too late to

  119. reform the temple and pass time for God

  120. to pass judgment on it as he did in

  121. Micah

  122. 6 well the next day Jesus finds a tree

  123. in a fruitless condition and curses the

  124. tree the King James version preserves an

  125. interesting detail from the Greek it

  126. says "And Jesus answered applees in

  127. Greek and said unto it no man eat fruit

  128. of thee hereafter forever." It's as if

  129. the leaves on the tree communicated

  130. fruitfulness but in fact wasn't fruitful

  131. so Jesus responded to the tree with

  132. judgment and the disciples heard

  133. it after cursing the tree Jesus enters

  134. the city and goes to the temple he

  135. drives out the money changers and

  136. merchants he stops vessels from being

  137. carried through the temple grounds and

  138. overturns tables and seats of those who

  139. were selling doves which was the

  140. sacrificial animal for the very poor

  141. this is commonly referred to as Jesus

  142. cleansing the temple but was it a

  143. cleansing why would Jesus cleanse

  144. something that he himself was replacing

  145. and knew would would be destroyed

  146. it was more of a disruption than a

  147. cleansing this is what he did he stopped

  148. the normal operations of the temple

  149. money changers helped pilgrims exchange

  150. their money to pay the required temple

  151. tax merchants sold unblenmished animals

  152. for sacrifices the vessels or

  153. merchandise around the temple with

  154. sacrificial elements

  155. jesus explained why he stopped all of

  156. this necessary activity in Mark 11:17

    Mark 11:17

  157. jesus quotes from Isaiah and Jeremiah

  158. and says "Is it not written my house

  159. will be called a house of prayer for all

  160. the nations but you have made it a den

  161. of robbers." The first reference is to

  162. Isaiah 56 where God invites foreigners

  163. to come worship in his house of prayer

  164. and in the same breath God promises to

  165. quote "gather the dispersed of

  166. Israel." The second temple was meant to

  167. bring restoration to Israel and to fill

  168. their purpose as a people of being a

  169. light to the

  170. nations but that is not what was

  171. happening jesus's two main critiques of

  172. religion in Israel is that it was

  173. hypocritical and exclusionary and

  174. because of that their religion wasn't

  175. bearing fruit instead of the temple

  176. being the center of God's justice and

  177. mercy Jesus described it as a den of

  178. robbers and that's the reference to

  179. Jeremiah 7 where the Lord issues a

  180. powerful condemnation against

  181. hypocrisy in Jeremiah 7:8-11 it says

    Jeremiah 7:8–11

  182. "Behold you are trusting in deceptive

  183. words to no avail will you steal murder

  184. commit adultery swear falsely offer

  185. sacrifices to ball and follow other gods

  186. that you have not known then come and

  187. stand before me in this house which is

  188. called by my name and say "We are saved

  189. so that you may do all these

  190. abominations has this house which is

  191. called by my name become a den of

  192. robbers in your sight behold I myself

  193. have seen it declares the Lord jeremiah

  194. 11 ends with a declaration that due to

  195. the lack of justice and righteousness in

  196. Israel it says the land will become a

  197. sight of ruin so imagine this the crowds

  198. had celebrated Jesus their as their king

  199. the day before and now he was applying

  200. the condemnation of Jeremiah 7 to the

  201. temple and to the people and that's why

  202. the priests and scribes responded to

  203. Jesus by plotting to kill him jesus was

  204. calling out their complacency and

  205. corruption the scholar Timothy Gambas

  206. points out in his commentary on Mark

  207. that the temple had come to represent

  208. the tragedy that God's people had taken

  209. perverse comfort in their identity as

  210. God's people to excuse their

  211. disobedience this hypocrisy was holding

  212. Israel back from fulfilling its vocation

  213. of being a light to the nations instead

  214. of the temple becoming a symbol of God's

  215. free invitation of mercy and worship it

  216. was the place organized around excluding

  217. all outsiders and foreigners remember in

  218. Acts 21 when Paul was arrested in

  219. Jerusalem his opponents had seen him

  220. walking around the city with an Ephesian

  221. and so they accused him of bringing

  222. Greeks into the temple grounds that's

  223. just an example of how the temple was

  224. not fulfilling its purpose and Jesus

  225. condemned it just like he condemned the

  226. fig tree and if this point was not clear

  227. enough the next

  228. morning Jesus and the disciples passed

  229. by the fig tree again and see it

  230. withered from the roots up and Jesus

  231. told them "Have faith in God truly I

  232. tell you whoever says to this mountain

  233. "Be taken up and thrown into the sea,"

  234. and does not doubt in his heart but

  235. believes that what he says is going to

  236. happen it will be granted to him

  237. remember how we looked at Micah 7 to

  238. hear the echo of early figs that Jesus

  239. was looking for in a tree full of

  240. leaves micah 6 and 7 is about God's

  241. judgment on Israel's sin but the second

  242. half of Micah 7 describes God's desire

  243. and vision of mercy and restoration for

  244. Israel micah 7:18 says "He does not

    Micah 7:18

  245. retain his anger forever because he

  246. delights in mercy he will again take

  247. pity on us he will trample on our

  248. wrongdoings yes you will cast all their

  249. sins into the depths of the sea."

  250. So what does Jesus mean by having faith

  251. to throw a mountain into the sea he had

  252. just cursed the temple and condemned it

  253. the place where the people flock to

  254. experience God's mercy and forgiveness

  255. without the temple and the place where

  256. God lives with his people how would they

  257. have hope and

  258. reconciliation jesus encourages them to

  259. have faith pray and not doubt god is

  260. willing to cast all their sins into the

  261. depths of the sea because he is faithful

  262. and he delights in

  263. mercy god is willing to bring communal

  264. restoration to his people judgment in

  265. the prophetic tradition is always follow

  266. is always followed by the hope of

  267. renewal but renewal comes with an

  268. obligation to please God and obey him

  269. jesus was using this living parable of

  270. the fig tree to point to an end of one

  271. thing and the beginning of another he

  272. replaced the temple as the center of

  273. forgiveness and replaced it with the

  274. community of disciples who would embody

  275. God's mercy and that's why the apostle

  276. Paul later describes the church as the

  277. new temple and house of God's

  278. spirit jesus said "Whenever you stand

  279. praying forgive." That's a high calling

  280. it points to what it means to be a

  281. community of righteousness i think it's

  282. immature and worldly to look at what

  283. Jesus did in the temple and think we are

  284. excused to be aggressive and overbearing

  285. with our convictions christians get into

  286. a lot of trouble for that instead

  287. disciplehip in in the New Testament is

  288. defined by humility gentleness and

  289. kindness let your gentleness be evident

  290. to all

  291. and people have said to me "Jesus was a

  292. real man because he turned over tables

  293. when he needed to." But that's not the

  294. lesson here the point of this passage is

  295. that we are not to hide our sins behind

  296. our religion and behind our identity as

  297. a church member when Jesus entered the

  298. temple he saw priests using the temple

  299. system to enrich themselves juxtaposed

  300. with the poor thronging to merchant

  301. tables to buy the cheapest animal they

  302. could to participate in atonement

  303. rituals he also saw a compromising

  304. alliance with empire as the chief

  305. priests were collaborators with

  306. Rome you know as followers of Christ we

  307. have to be aware of these things as well

  308. nationalism or political idolatry and

  309. the deceitfulness of wealth those things

  310. choke out the word and make us

  311. unfruitful again the point of Jesus

  312. disrupting the temple is not to show

  313. that we need to forcibly advance the

  314. kingdom push over tables and whip people

  315. if necessary the point is that true

  316. religion does not neglect the practice

  317. of mercy in our daily lives which is why

  318. Jesus emphasizes forgiveness at the end

  319. of this passage we're not just supposed

  320. to seek God's mercy but be God's mercy

  321. in the world because Jesus sees those

  322. two things as inseparably

  323. linked we can recognize in church

  324. history how cursed it is for communities

  325. to rely on the status of being

  326. recipients of God n God's mercy but not

  327. givers of it so in this passage Jesus is

  328. laying down the standard of maturity

  329. before his disciples and he is of course

  330. not expecting immediate and complete

  331. transformation because that's not how

  332. character works we are blessed in Christ

  333. and grow into our blessings when I think

  334. of the concept of blessing as the

  335. opposite of being cursed like the fig

  336. tree was cursed I think of Psalms 1 and

  337. it talks about how the blessed person

  338. delights in God's law and meditates on

  339. it day and night

  340. they are like a tree planted by a stream

  341. that yields its fruit in season and

  342. whose leaf never

  343. withers and that's an interesting image

  344. to see alongside the withered fig tree

  345. jesus wants us to be blessed and

  346. fruitful he has no desire to curse his

  347. community of saints because God is our

  348. father and we are his chosen and his

  349. beloved and his spirit lives in the

  350. church we have freely available to us

  351. God's presence mercy forgiveness God's

  352. joy his delight and his wisdom and if we

  353. pray for those things we should believe

  354. as if we have already received them

  355. because in fact they are abundantly

  356. available to us in Christ Jesus our Lord

  357. one thing you can meditate on today is

  358. what are some spiritual mountains in our

  359. community that seem too big to move out

  360. of the way jesus is providing us a

  361. prophetic message because he wants us to

  362. have hope we can pray to God about what

  363. we need more hope for

  364. today amen
