Teach us to Pray - Part 1

So let me read your little verse of Scripture before we put

anything up on the board. Read your little verse of

Scripture. We are learning how to pray.

None of us have arrived. None of us are.

The Bible says don't Babble. Like men on street corners that

you look like you, super spiritual.

I don't think any of us have arrived at the point where we

can say we are heavenly prayers. None of us are there.

None of us have. Actually, none of us have

arrived. There, but I'll tell.

You this the power of prayer changes the world and the secret

of the Christian life is pray. And the problem is that the

majority of us are not regular prayers.

We we, we get on with our life and we are not utilizing this

great privilege called pray. This is what it says in, in, in

Revelation 8. You don't have to turn there.

I'll just read it to you. It says when he opened the 7th

seal there was. Silence in heaven for about half

an hour and I saw the seven angels who stand before God and

to them were given 7 trumpets another.

Angel, who had a golden censor, came and stood.

At the altar. He was given.

Much incense to offer with the prayers of all the Saints.

On the golden altar before the throne, the smoke of the

incense. It's the thing that those.

Bishops carry down the that, that, that, that, that, that

censor with the, with the. Smoke.

The smoke of the incense, together with the prayers of the

Saints, went up before God. From the angel's hand you

imagine that this rich smell with the prayers of all the

Saints. Then the Angel took the sensor

filled. With fire from the altar and he.

Hold it on the earth. And they came, peals of Thunder,

rumblings, flashes of lightning, and an earthquake.

Prayers are movers and shakers. When we pray, things change.

Amen. Things change.

This, friends. This.

Is a 1983 Honda XR200R speedometer made?

By the Nippon Business in. Japan and I have a 1983 Honda

XR200R which I spent 300 hours paying.

My dad off he bought. It for 3000, Rand in 1983 and I

had to work for 300 hours, 10 Rand an hour as a petrol station

attendant in order and so this bike is in absolutely pristine

condition and I had it. Fixed up and get.

All the paint. And when they fixed it up.

This thing was stolen because this thing you can't find and so

for. Five years I've gone to every

website on motorbikes all over the world to try and find.

This thing. I've prayed, I've cried, I have

tried to bribe, I have almost stolen, I have looked at and the

only thing that stops you is I know God will catch me, but I've

seen. Them and think about just.

Whipped it like that. It did.

Nobody would even know and I've got a hold.

Of companies and I've. Written to Honda and Japan and

they say we don't. Supply parts that are 40 years

old. And so I thought, well.

The only thing I can do is I can pray.

To our Father who. Art in heaven and I pray.

Somewhere he's going to. Send down a peal of Thunder and

something's going to shake and whoever's got.

This stuck in the. Garage, It's going to come

unshaken. It's going to come to me.

But there was nothing. And so I.

Prayed and prayed and prayed and said God.

Are you deaf? We are.

You, Lord God, I need. This Lord, I need it.

This is just a trivial, useless piece of equipment that deals

with my unusual nature that if it doesn't, I'd rather give my

bike away than drive it without a speedometer.

I lost the pen now that I'm praying for that one as well.

I have a whole. Collection.

They're cheap, they're only ¥250, but I've got a whole

collection. I've collected them over 20

years but the green ones gone and they stop making it I feel.

Like giving the whole collection.

Away. 20 years of. Collection because every time I.

Look at them. I think it doesn't look right,

but this morning I. Took my collection, I said O

our. Father who art in heaven.

Hallowed be your name for just stupid trivial things like pens.

And then I was driving to court to go and be a witness.

And I know some of you know this story, but I was driving to

court along Lynwood Road and along Lynwood Rd. there's

another Rd. Called Dire.

Road not named after me. I wish it was, but every time I

go there I'm reminded there was somebody of my forefathers and

every time I go past Dire Rd. I think.

I'm driving past Dire Rd. And then just passed Dire Rd.

I see an antique shop and I feel God say inside that antique shop

is this thing I've never heard. God speak to I wish.

He would. I feel like I no, I don't

deserve it. I'm only joking as I went to

court for seven hours and we witnesses and all those things.

I don't worry. I wasn't on the dock.

I was the the advocate told me I wasn't dressed properly.

And you know me and my advocates, it's an ongoing

journey and God bless you. I don't know how you can, but

God bless you anyway. And so we.

We were driving, I was. Driving back and I went past

Linwood Rd. and Dyer. I thought I remember that so so

I did AU turn and and I went into the shop and I said hi, my

name is Rory. Said hello Rory, I'm Chris.

I said Chris, what do you do? He said I'm a property developer

and we got talking about property and he loves antiques.

I said Chris, the strangest thing happened.

I drove past your shop. I've got a 1983 200, he said.

Yo, the one with the. Blue seat and the yellow side

go. I said, yo, you remember that

182, it was black and white and then 84 they put the twin

carbon, he said. When they put the twin carbon

they completely messed it up. I said yo they're not the same.

I said Chris I need this but he said hey Rory, those things are

like hens teeth. I said but Chris can you help

me? He said I'll try.

And the week lady phoned me said, hey, I found one for you,

but it's broken. I think, oh, I'd rather have a

broken one there than nothing. But but, but our Father who art

in heaven, I mean, surely God, you're not going to give me a

broken speeder. And then when I went to

Australia, begin here, he phoned me.

He said, hey Roy, you won't believe it.

I found one. That's an absolutely perfect

working condition. You see, friends, when we pray,

we're trying to ask God to. Come by his power.

Into the Russian Ukrainian war. And we can also ask him trivial

things like speedometers and pens and the restoration of your

marriage and your children to come back to God and for God to

give you a scripture that you can find the dignity of

employment. And for God to supernaturally

intersect your path with somebody that can give you

advice and help you out. And tell a man in Bedford View

to come to a church in Pretoria, E because there's a black girl

who didn't have a dad who could help her up in any possible way

and have access to some kind of finance so that the little girl

that she's given birth to can travel in a safeguard.

It's the same God that can do this, can do that.

And as Nico will preach as he as we shared lunch together on

Friday, he doesn't tell a story without relating it to a

scripture and one of the scriptures.

I've never forgotten, Nico, when you were lying in your bed

overseas and your business was under deep pressure and COVID

had affected every single part of your business and you're

reading Psalm 107, it says we were at our wit's.

End. Remember, you taught me we were

at our wit's end. But we cried out to God and he

answered, I want to tell you, friends, that the God of heaven,

when you see. Heaven in the.

Bible. It's not some far off distance

place. Heaven is actually all around us

and God is just waiting by his hand to reach into us.

And so we live with this incredible mystery.

Between the sovereignty of God and the prayers of men, they

will. God is sovereign.

Everything will happen. But God somehow uses our

prayers. And so I want to.

Matthew 6 · chapter mention

6. I won't preach long.

I just want you to catch the heart of it.

This then is how you should pray Matthew 6 verse.

Now this then is how you should. Pray.

And and you know, the longer you serve God.

The harder it is to. Admit that you don't have a

prayer life. It's like the longer you've

served God, the harder it is to admit that you don't know your

way around the Bible. This is not some kind of hotshot

spiritual centre. This is just a family having a

go at serving God, making mistakes, falling.

You know when my kids. Fell off when they were learning

to walk. I didn't smash their faces in, I

didn't beat them up and say don't fall down.

I just picked them up and I dusted them off and I loved them

until they stopped crying and I said have another go.

They would walk and stumble and fall and I'd pick them up again

and I'd have another go and, and then they started running.

And then, and then I've got this whole range of children from 27

to 16 and, and what I expect of my 27 year old son, I don't

expect of my 16 year old son because they're on different

journeys. They've got different levels of

maturity and inside of this auditorium we've got all sorts

of different levels of maturity. You think, well, there must be a

standard. No, there's not a standard.

When he taught them to pray, he said this is the standard.

Our Father say our Father, so. So that takes away all sovereign

God, Lord Almighty. Holy.

God, all of those things are beautiful and we can address God

with all those things, but when he taught us to pray, He bought

it down to a relational level where you and I act like sons

and daughters of a really good God.

The problem with that, as we did on Tuesday, when you ask people

about their dad, some of them said my hero, a legend,

unbelievable, generous, kind, loving, strong, but others said

alcoholic, disappointing, absent and so, so we.

Come to. Pray.

And we've got all these earthly perspectives of our own fathers.

That's why I've got Lawrence up here, because Lawrence is this.

Picture of this really rugged, strong, successful.

Man. But actually, when he walked

down the aisle, there was this. Tenderness inside of him.

And the words that came out of mouth were this beauty.

And I realized the accessibility that that beautiful girl had

with her dad was what we tried to convey as we learn how to

pray together and so God. Has to bypass.

Our earthly understanding of Father in order that we can get

and so God sends his son Jesus and the Bible says.

If you have seen me. You have seen the Father.

So he comes and says here's here's what it looks like.

I don't, I don't know what it looked like for you, but here's

what it looks like on earth. If you've seen Jesus, you've

seen the Father, and then the Son goes back to the Father and

he says actually to make this thing real.

I'm going to pour my Holy Spirit.

Into your heart and. By the Spirit.

Of God, you're going to cry, ABBA Father.

So actually we can. Bypass all the earthly.

Stuff we can. Bypass it all.

How are we going to do it, Rory? Well, we're going to do it like

this, Damien. Is going to wait on God because

Damien chooses who leads the meetings so.

Damien's going to wait. On God and he's going to pray

and he's going to say our. Father who art in heaven.

Hallowed be your name on Sunday. Father God, we have to.

Speak and represent. You to the group of.

People that are going. To come from all over the

country. So, Father, who do you?

Think should lead the meeting on Sunday and then Damien sees when

SMS he. Says hey raw.

I was thinking about Maggie leading the meeting.

What do you think? I said, hey, it's not my

responsibility. That's your responsibility,

Damien. He said.

I think. Maggie should lead the meeting

and then he sends an SMS. Hey Maggie, do you think you

Because we've got a baby. That we share and somebody.

And then and then God has to speak through praise our Father

art in heaven to a guy called Gideon.

Father's Day. So there's a guy called Rory who

actually he loves the. Father, heart of God, so let's

go there on Father's Day. And God starts to.

Put the pieces together because. Somehow he needs a car to go

from the CEO. Of.

A car company. To one of his daughters.

And God starts to. Put the whole thing together

through Damien. Who's asking God who should?

Lead the meeting. And so who's the hearer is it?

The guy who came from Bedford View.

Is it there's a? Girl who's leading the meeting?

Or is it just some guy who just happens to get onto?

His knees and instead. Of going through a roster.

System thinks, I wonder. By God's grace, you should leave

the meeting today. And you've got to.

Know that in every supernatural. If every supernatural.

Crossing of the. T and dotting of the.

I behind. That is the hand of God who is

trying to break. Into our world, and heaven is

not. Far away.

It's not some unreachable place. It's close by.

It's close by. Amen.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.

This, this is not a prayer. We just our Father art in

heaven, hallowed be your name, your Kingdom come.

You will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us today Our Daily Bread and forgive us our sins as we

forgive those who sin against us and deliver us from evil.

It's not a formula that you go through in 3 minutes.

It is a model that we can spend the next 30 years of our lives

trying to understand the depths and diversity of what God is

trying to teach us. And, and it says our Father, I

don't want to pray it alone. I want to pray it with people

who are prepared to give up their Tuesday nights and come

and sit with me. When I sat here on Tuesday

night. There was a man who left the

church 20 years ago, 20 years ago he left the church and

because of a wedding that we did in this church, because of a

family that don't believe in Christmas.

Because we had a. Christmas tree.

A man came to see me and said, I don't believe in Christmas tree.

I said I don't care what you believe in.

If you date one of our girls, you come here, China, I'll stick

the tree up your nostrils. Do you really?

Think I am going to fight about a Christmas tree?

I couldn't give a hoot about a Christmas tree, seriously.

But because of that, because of that Christmas tree, a boy, a

young man, decided to come here to honor his fiance and here he

learnt about God and at his wedding day, one of the guests

said. If that's how you.

Preach, then I'll come to church, he said.

But I'm only going to come to your church once, so that's good

enough for God. When he came once, he said I'll

come a second time, and then he said I might come back a third

time. I said really?

And on our staff, we've got a girl who's been crying out to

God to get married. It's one of the desires of their

heart. Every single.

Day of my life I pray for every one of our staff members by name

I get on my knees and I'll say our Father who art in heaven

hallowed be your name I've. Prayed for that girl for.

Years to meet a man and the dad that I met at a wedding who

happened to come to church, bought his son.

And when his son came to church, he saw the girl and the girl is

now his girlfriend. And when he came to me, instead

of some earthly thing like saying hey, I'm watching you

because it's one of our girls, I started to weep.

I said you are an answer to pray.

But the man who's not come for the 5th or the 6th.

Time on. Tuesday was sitting about there

where that Lady is with the green jersey.

He was sitting on the carpet with his hands like this on the

floor for an hour as we prayed. Our Father, let's say it, our

Father, our Father who art in heaven, who art in heaven,

hallowed be your name. And we have got no idea when

those prayers go to God with the smoke of the sensor.

When those prayers go to God and he starts slowing down, Thunder

and lightning and pills and earthquakes and rumblings and

shakings, we've got no idea what God is doing.

I want to tell you instead of coming to church with lacquer

clothes, we should come with crash helmets and seatbelts.

Thinking when we start praying, it's like TNT gets released

inside of this place and the power of God becomes absolutely

uncontrollable. And we will start to see

miracles taking place that we've never even dreamt of.

If you can put the quote up, I read this quote, it says the

Lord. 'S prayer covers the world of

everyday trifles. Seriously, God.

Seriously, Rory, are you going to spend time praying?

For a jolly speedometer of a 1983 motorbike, yes I am.

Why? Because God is in the detail of

my life and He knows. Some of you are ADD and some of

you are He knows. The Lord's Prayer covers the

world of everyday trifles and universal history, the world

with its hours. Of joy and bottomless anguish.

The world of citizens and soldiers.

The world of monotonous routine. My boss again and sudden.

Terrible catastrophe. The world of carefree children

and the problems that can shatter grown men, all contained

in this incredible thing called the Lord's Prayer.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your Kingdom come,

your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give. Us today, Our Daily Bread.

Forgive us our debts as we also have forgiven our debtors and

lead us not. Into temptation.

But deliver us from the evil one, for instance.

You just have to. All I'm asking over this next

month is to just read it and read it.

Not like our father Aknehal. Just read it.

And what is God? He's he's trying to teach us

about himself. He wants us to know what he's

like. Then he wants us to know.

What the Kingdom looks like and what pleases him.

His will, not my will. His will not my will.

His will, not my will. We see it with Jesus the whole

way through His. Life We see Jesus at 12 years

old, he's in the he's in the temple and his mum and dad leave

and they come back and they angry and say hey.

You've caused enormous stress because we left and we left you

behind and it's taken us two days to find you.

Where are you? He says I'm busy with my

father's will, I'm busy with my father's business.

And then the disciples go and get food.

And in John chapter four, they go and get food and and they

come back and they say you must eat because you haven't.

Eaten, he said. I have.

Food, you know, not of my food is to do the will of the Father

and we and we realized that actually the whole thing that

that that that shaped Jesus life was the.

Will of the Father. And he's busy preaching and his.

Mother and brothers are outside and they come and say your

mother and your brothers because they want to go and rescue him

from doing his stuff and. He says your mother.

And brothers. Are outside, he says.

These are my mother and brothers, the ones who do the

will of the father. And then we see this amazing

wrestle that Jesus has in the Garden of Gethsemane, where he's

crying. Out and he's sweating blood.

And I feel like I'm one of those guys in the Garden of Gethsemane

that every time Jesus goes to pray, I just fall asleep.

That's what I feel like. Sometimes that Jesus.

Comes back and they fast asleep and he's in this unbelievable

wrestle between his will and his father's will.

He says, Father, please, please Father, take this will from me.

Please take this cup from me. I can't go through this thing,

Lord God, because all evil, all sin has come and sacrificed the

obedience to God's will and we all live self-centered lives

that benefit ourselves alone. And Jesus in this unbelievable

tug and says, Father, please take this cup.

From me but not my will be done your will and it's a.

Mess if he wins back. The will of God for you and I so

that when we wait upon him, Nico's bought these unbelievable

properties all over the country, but one of them he bought in

Santon. He said it was a good deal, but

it wasn't a God deal. It was a good deal, but it

wasn't a God deal. And we learn as we pray and we

wrestle and we say with people and we, we learn what the will

of God looks like and then we can ask him some questions.

But Lord God, I need, I need resource for this.

I need bread not, not for 25 years, just for one day, 24

hours. I learn how to trust God.

And some of us need more bread than others and some of us need

less bread than others. But we but we learn how to tap

into the provision of God. Give me today my daily bread and

and forgive our sins. We learn.

We learn about grace because I want to tell you it doesn't

matter who you are. And it's one of the things we

forget when we don't pray is that is that people must give me

grace, but I mustn't give them grace back.

No friends, I'm a Sinner that needs forgiveness.

I'm not talking about justification.

I don't have to keep if I don't forget yourselves.

It's not my my salvation at stake.

It's my daily walk with people. It's my attitude and I and I tap

into grace as I pray and lead me not into temptation, but deliver

me from the evil one. For instance, I left hearted,

beers put down. We got in our car.

I'm studying the Lord's Prayer, studying the Lord's Prayer.

We we got in the car, my wife and I, about 8:45 on Friday

evening. I said, God, we know if you go

that way from Hardy Best, but damn, that road is not safe

because it goes through an area and it says hijackings.

And everybody said to me, now you turn right, you turn left,

you go towards. Brits.

You get on the 511 and the 511 takes you onto the N 4 and I

said, Heavenly Father, please protect us from the evil 1.

It's very dark for the 511 turns onto the N4 and when we got on

the N4 about 200 meters down the N4 there was there was lots

flashing and we saw a security van do AU turn and dust

everything dust coming back to the and we got home and my wife

turned on her traffic thing and it says hijacking sparking

reported on the R 511 and the N four at 9 O clock.

We're living in a tough country. There are two options you can

pack up and go to Perth or wherever you want to go or we

can tap into the Lord's Prayer because most of us can't leave

here. We don't have an option and so

we have to ask God. He says my prayer is not that

you take them out of the world. My prayer is that you protect

them from the from the evil 1. So put the put the other display

up the next one. This thing is how you should.

Pray. Let's say together our Father in

heaven, hallowed be. Let's emphasize whatever it's

emphasized, let's emphasize it. So let's read it together, one

shot. Our Father in heaven, hallowed

be your name, your Kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it

is in heaven. Give us today Our Daily Bread.

Forgive us US our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver.

The first thing that prayer does is it absolutely reorientates

our lives where yours becomes more important than us and most

people are US focused. Our Father art in heaven.

I need a job. Our Father in art in heaven.

Fix my marriage. Our Father and art in heaven.

My kids are on. No, just you need to reorientate

your life. We are not here to exist for

ourselves. We're here to honour God.

We're here to honour God. Amen.

So let's say it again. Our Father who art in heaven

hallowed be your name. You've got to learn about the

name of God. Friends when I had a brain

operation always say this, at least somebody can go to court

and say they've seen it. But I remember, I remember going

to Durban. I remember going to Durban and

sitting with a who are the guys who do brain surgery?

I know. I'm just asking you the thing

of, you know, the brain doctor, I, I went to this brain doctor,

neurosurgeon and I sat in his office.

When I sat there, it just didn't feel right.

This didn't feel right. And So what I did is I just

asked a whole lot of people. They say there's a guy in

Merrittsburg who's got a good name.

He's got a good name. They're doctors in this building

today. You can't get into them for two

or three months because they've got good, they've got good

reputations, they've got good what they're studying and what

they do and over a course of they've developed good names.

It happened last week as a doctor, I saw him walking just

now operates. I won't tell you what hospital

he operates in, but last week a young man walked onto this

property whose parents were in the church for many, many, many

years and he was completely disorientated.

No money, no income, no it just, he was disorientated.

And we felt we needed to orientate him with an amount of

money just so that he could just settle himself.

So we gave him the gift within a couple of hours.

This doctor SMS was on Saturday last week, Saturday afternoon.

Sunday morning we get a message to say I've put money into the

three CR bank account. I'm going into an operation now

because I need to operate. But actually I'm going to pay

for the coffees for the next two Sundays. 1500 cappuccinos.

What? What's is God's will for him to

be a pastor? No, God's will for him to be a

doctor. But God wants access to his

money so that he can extend the Kingdom of God in a coffee shop

so that people who don't know how the whole thing works will

arrive there when they think, oh, who are you, God?

And Humber says there's a free coffee.

Well, I don't know where Dave is.

Where's Dave Salias? Where you, Dave?

You normally sit here. You're sitting there.

You've moved. We don't do that in three CI.

You are in Dave's chair, Lawrence.

He's also a Big Oak. Simon, Dave's brother, is a

scientist and lecturer at Oxford University in England or

Cambridge University or one of the universities in England.

And he says this stuff here with church stuff is a lot of

gobbledygook. So I just bought him to church

anyway and he thought, I'm going to go and hang around with 2500

gobbledygook guys. And he was sitting there and I

was preaching on the Father heart of God and I said you,

Sir, you Sir, you Sir don't know about my Father in heaven.

And because his father on earth was dodgy, he started to weep.

And all his scientific brain got completely because our Father

who art in heaven, you see, he's got a name.

And the reason I never had my operation in Durban and I went

to Merrittsburg is because that doctor had a name.

His name was Errol Ackerman. When before I went into the

hospital, his nurse came to see me.

He said Mr. Dyer, I was 21 years old, about to have my brain

opened up. He said, Mr. Dyer, can I tell

you about Doctor Errol Ackerman's hands?

I said, yes, please, ma'am. She said, I've been working with

him for 20 years. She said his hands, he never

used to shake your hand in case he hurt it, in case some came in

and and squeezed it too hard. And he had an incredible

business. I came from Harry Smith.

He had this incredible name amongst all the Harry Smith

people. And I remember one of my friends

went in for a back operation. He went in and he said Doctor

Ackerman, my back. He said the problem is not your

back, so your problem is your front.

He said fix your front up, your back will sort itself out.

I don't need to operate. Says your back can't carry that

big, heavy thing in the front. And the nurse said to me said,

you know, Mr. Dyer, one of the highlights of my life, I said,

what man? She said there was a time when

we were operating deep inside of somebody's brain and Doctor

Ackerman didn't know what to do. And he put down his utensils and

he opened his hands, the hands that he wouldn't shake anybody's

hands with. And he said, Heavenly Father,

guide me, guide me. You see, this prayer, friends,

is relational. This prayer is spiritual.

This prayer guides, this prayer provides this prayer looks

after. And she said, I want to tell

you, you're about to go into the safest hands that you could ever

go into. Why?

Because he had a good name. The anaesthetist was his wife,

Doctor Mustard. And one day I was standing at

the front of the tent. Yeah.

And I met a man. He just walked in.

I said, how you serve? My name is Rory.

He said, hi, Rory. I'm.

I said, what do you do, Sir? He said what?

What do you mean what I do? I said, what do you do for a

living? He said I'm an anaesthetist.

I said I actually had an anaesthetist once.

Her name was Doctor Mustard. He said yes, that's my sister.

You see, friends, somewhere between the choice of doctors

and the choice of Sundays and where you go to church and, and,

and the shops that you have coffee at is this father who's

putting it all together. So whether you're going to court

or bringing your brother from England, who's the father is

busy putting this whole thing together.

He just needs us to put a bit of time aside to pray.

It's hard to pray. We always want to fall asleep.

We're always busy. We're tired at the end of the

day, but we're calling the church to pray.

Our Father who art in heaven, will you break into the

situations of the people on the earth?

Will you give me, Lord God, that green pen?

And also, would you get people saved on Sunday?

And those who are on drugs, would you set them free?

Mighty God, would you take my prayers and would you throw down

the sensor that? Causes an earthquake and a.

Shattering Lord God and. Breaks powers over people.

Because your will, when I look at it, Lord God, is to create

and to multiply and to bless. Lord God, that's what you said

to Abraham. I will bless you and you'll be a

blessing. And when I pray to you, God,

will you give me words that I can be a blessing to people,

Lord God? And the whole book of.

Exodus, Lord God, is about liberty.

Let my people go so that they might worship me.

Lord God, that when people sit under our ministry and under our
