  1. Amen. Amen.

  2. Amen. How you all doing?

  3. It's my yearly preach. Welcome.

  4. You made it must be prophetic for you to be here this morning.

  5. It's so wonderful. We are continuing our journey

  6. through Romans 8. Woop woop.

  7. What is the title of the series More than Conquerors?

  8. It's on the screen more than Conquerors, and we would be

  9. amiss if we walked away from this series without having

  10. freedom, without having life, and without having the Holy

  11. Spirit having done something very deep within our hearts.

  12. A few years ago we were planning a trip to the States and Sophia

  13. was barely 2 years old. And as one does when 1 travels

  14. with a toddler and a mother-in-law, you need to be

  15. well prepared, am I right? You know, making sure that you

  16. have your visas booked. Snacks.

  17. Thanks Jess. I'm glad that you were there or

  18. gave me some advice. You weren't there but anyway and

  19. made sure that you got all the right milk for the for the long

  20. plane trip, the right seats booked everything I get.

  21. And just when it felt like that we were really got everything

  22. together. I had this moment of absolute

  23. panic. I don't know if you ever have

  24. one of those where you're like feels like your insides are

  25. about to fall out. And it came when I saw this

  26. announcement on TV. Department of Home Affairs

  27. changes the rules. Children can no longer travel on

  28. the abridged birth certificate. You need the unabridged birth

  29. certificate. Does it?

  30. Do any of you remember that it was the great unabridged

  31. abridged birth certificate debacle of 2015?

  32. And basically, panic, fear immediately went home.

  33. Which one do we have? Guess one.

  34. Guess which one we had? The wrong one, not the right

  35. one. So in that moment of panic, I

  36. did what every God fearing head of the home would do in a

  37. situation like that. I turned to Google.

  38. What does unabridged mean? OK, on on for court.

  39. On for court on for court, court.

  40. I speak Afrikaans with a German accent.

  41. A full version complete. It contains all the details.

  42. OK cool. What?

  43. What's the difference between an unabridged and an abridged birth

  44. certificate? OK cool, cool, got that.

  45. Where? Where can I get an unabridged

  46. birth certificate? At your nearest Home Affairs

  47. office. Which Home Affairs office in

  48. Pretoria has the shortest queues?

  49. And at that moment, I'm sure there was something wrong with

  50. Google because all that had returned to me were these, like,

  51. laughing emojis, roll on the floor laughing.

  52. I don't know, you know. So off I went to Pretoria vest.

  53. Pretoria vest, because I thought not too many people there

  54. requiring an unabridged birth certificate to travel to the

  55. States. I was sorely mistaken and went

  56. to the mania and asked the Massa Blief Kanek on for court.

  57. Herbert a certificate and they said please stand in this queue

  58. that starts outside of the building.

  59. At the end of the day, we got it and we're able to travel.

  60. You see, the abridged birth certificate was never outlawed.

  61. It never. It was still a legal document.

  62. You just couldn't travel on it. And how often do we live with an

  63. unabridged, with an abridged version of the gospel?

  64. You see, my heavenly abridged birth certificate says this.

  65. I'm born again. Sins are forgiven, no

  66. condemnation. Citizen of heaven, full stop.

  67. And I'll see you all in heaven and we can all go home now and

  68. we can end the message because it's completely true.

  69. But God says, and Romans reminds us and says, hang on, hang on a

  70. minute. What about this life?

  71. What about the next 203040506070 years?

  72. I need you to travel. I need you to go on this

  73. adventure with me. I need you to reclaim this

  74. promised land that I have said I have for you.

  75. I need you to carry the unabridged version of the

  76. gospel. And the unabridged version is

  77. this born again, sins forgiven. And I have given you the Holy

  78. Spirit. I have given you the Holy Spirit

  79. so that you can travel, you can go, you can be guarded, you can

  80. be LED. The gospel doesn't just release

  81. us from our past sins. It has the power to transform

  82. our present. It has the power to transform

  83. our present. The gospel isn't just salvation,

  84. it's sanctification. It's a daily journey of

  85. reclaiming our inheritance. It's more than just repentance.

  86. It includes daily conviction and guidance for this life, for this

  87. journey that we are on. We need the full version.

  88. We need to travel. We need the Holy Spirit.

  89. Amen. Amen.

  90. And then we get to this little speed hump.

  91. I like to call it bloop. That's my speed up.

  92. Sound. Speed up.

  93. Sound like it. Damien Bloop.

  94. Love it. And when you're driving along

  95. and then bloop and the speed up is this comes in verse #5 of

  96. Romans where it says you have the Holy Spirit, you've been

  97. born again. But I'm going to let you in a

  98. little secret. You still need to choose.

  99. Do you follow the Holy Spirit? Would you follow your sinful

  100. nature? Let's read Romans 8, five to

  101. seven. Those who live according to

  102. their sinful nature have the mind set on what that nature

  103. desires, but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have

  104. the mind set on what the Spirit desires.

  105. The mind governed by sin is death, but the mind governed by

  106. the Spirit is life and peace. And Paul is saying this.

  107. Paul is saying you've got a choice.

  108. Either allow your minds, every decision you make, every

  109. conversation you have, your hopes, your dreams, your play,

  110. your work, your emotions, everything that takes place here

  111. on earth. You can choose whether that is

  112. governed by the Holy Spirit or by sin.

  113. And he takes it one step further and he says this, He predicts

  114. our future. He says if you allow the Spirit

  115. to lead you and guide you, it'll lead to life and peace, but if

  116. you allow sin in your sinful nature to guide you, it'll lead

  117. to death. So three points, 3 points and

  118. then we can go and enjoy our Sunday roast.

  119. I have a roast waiting for me at home. 1st, a warning, what

  120. happens when you follow our sinful nature?

  121. Second, a charge you can do this moment from the book of Romans.

  122. And lastly, a reminder of our glorious future and glorious

  123. inheritance. So first, the warning.

  124. And the warning is this, that despite being born again and

  125. despite having the Holy Spirit in US, we all still sin and our

  126. desire to sin and our tendency to sin doesn't miraculously

  127. float away. And it's been with us since the

  128. fall of man. And nothing describes this

  129. better. Then when God says to Cain just

  130. before he is about to commit murder and kill his brother, God

  131. says to him, Sin is crouching at your door.

  132. It desires to have you. Sin is crouching at your door.

  133. It desires to have you. Sounds like a horror movie, and

  134. it is. And Paul, the apostle Paul, a

  135. few thousand years later, the writer of most of the New

  136. Testament, in a chapter before chapter 8, Chapter 7, he has

  137. this incredibly honest moment about his own personal journey

  138. with sin. And he says these things.

  139. He says, sin seizing the opportunity, produced in me

  140. every covetous desire. Sin sprang to life and I died.

  141. Sin, seizing the opportunity again deceived me.

  142. And then he gets to this place where I just love it.

  143. It's the most honest appraisal of all of our lives, where he

  144. goes. I don't understand it.

  145. Because what I want to do, I don't do.

  146. What I don't want to do I do. And I hate.

  147. I hate what I do. I hate the sin that I do.

  148. Oh what a wretched man I am who will save me but for the grace

  149. of God. Even Paul struggled daily with

  150. sin, and sin is always crouching at the door and it always

  151. desires to have you. But it usually starts small.

  152. Usually starts small. Picture this Monday morning,

  153. firing off a few e-mails as one does and somebody walks past,

  154. catches your eye. Oh, she looks nice.

  155. She's making some coffee. I think I'm going to go and make

  156. some coffee. Coffee is good.

  157. I like coffee. And up you get.

  158. And something inside you says, hang on, don't go there, don't

  159. open that door. So you go and make some coffee.

  160. Hi, my name's Andy. Ah, Kristen, lovely to meet you.

  161. You new here, Kristen? Ah, HR fantastic.

  162. I remember your CV. Your CV coming across my desk.

  163. Yes, that's me. I'm Andy, the CEO, the big

  164. cheese. She laughed at my joke that felt

  165. good. No one laughs at my jokes at

  166. home anymore and the door is just a little bit open.

  167. Fast forward and you guys are enjoying each other's company

  168. and the chats are great and the coffee is great and you know,

  169. soon you guys are making coffee together and having lunch

  170. together because you know, there's no point in you bringing

  171. lunch and she bringing lunch. You may as well share lunch

  172. because you guys just enjoying it so much together.

  173. And my goodness, you know what, you guys have so much in common,

  174. Hey. And I mean, besides the fact

  175. that she does CrossFit and you and I into high rocks.

  176. But I mean, there's a small differences that that that we

  177. can get over, you know, but there's none of this drama, none

  178. of the drama that I have at home.

  179. There's no school runs, you know, and she's always so well

  180. put together. And soon people are calling her

  181. your work wife door just a little bit more open.

  182. And you begin to create this narrative in your mind that this

  183. person, you're so much better than the person you have at

  184. home. Wouldn't it be nice?

  185. Wouldn't it be nice? You see, thin is subtle.

  186. It's crouches at the door. It's knocking.

  187. You don't go from one day happily married to your fear.

  188. It eats away at the boundary lines until there are none left.

  189. And God is saying run, run, run from it.

  190. My child, this is not real. This is not 25 years of

  191. gravitas. This is not 25 years of

  192. companionship. This is a counterfeit.

  193. Your work wife is not real. She hasn't smelt your poo in the

  194. morning. She hasn't had to look after you

  195. whilst you've had your man flu. She hasn't had to spend time

  196. with your weird family and still agree.

  197. OK, we'll do Christmas with them again.

  198. She hasn't been there during your highest highs and she

  199. hasn't been there during your deepest lows.

  200. Your work wife is not real. It's not a real relationship.

  201. And I can be bold with this example because as I've shared

  202. before, this was me. So I can say stop it.

  203. You see, the problem with sin is that it always starts small, but

  204. in the end it leads to death. So let me introduce to you Andy

  205. and Kristen. So for those of you who don't

  206. know who this is, this is Meet Andy and Kristen.

  207. This was taken at a Coldplay concert when the KISS Cam was

  208. scanning around and found this happy couple.

  209. And immediately when the camera zoomed in on them, they hid in

  210. shame. They absolutely went first, like

  211. happy and then just ran away from the camera.

  212. And Chris Martin, the lead singer of Coldplay, he actually

  213. said this. Either they're having an affair

  214. or they're just very shy in front of the entire stadium.

  215. And he was the CEO and Kristen was the HR director.

  216. Both of them have lost their jobs.

  217. Both of them are getting divorced.

  218. Sin always leads to death. So now for the good news.

  219. Now for the charge. Verse 9.

  220. You, however, are not controlled by your sinful nature, but by

  221. the Spirit. You are not controlled by your

  222. sinful nature, but by the Spirit.

  223. And Paul having gone through, taken us through a journey and

  224. said, listen, I have battle every single day with sin.

  225. But guess what? I'm born again and I don't live

  226. in condemnation And God's given me his Holy Spirit and I still

  227. do what I what I'm trying not to do, but I want to be controlled

  228. by the Spirit. He then declares it over our

  229. lives and said, guess what guys, you are not controlled by your

  230. sinful nature. You've got the Holy Spirit

  231. inside of you. And the same power that raised

  232. Jesus from the dead now lives inside of us and gives life to

  233. these mortal, to our mortal bodies.

  234. Amen. And God is saying, I've watched

  235. you. I've watched you, man, for

  236. thousands of years. You've tried to get this thing

  237. right on your own, but it hasn't worked.

  238. So I have put my spirit inside you so that I can be with you

  239. all the time, all the time, every moment of every single

  240. day. I am with you.

  241. And the Holy Spirit is called our helper.

  242. He's called our comforter, He's called our counselor, He's

  243. called our advocate. He's called our God.

  244. And you will receive power, dynamite power, when the Holy

  245. Spirit comes on you. He is our powerful helper.

  246. He is our powerful counselor. He is our powerful advocate.

  247. He is our powerful God and he is that still small voice that each

  248. and every moment of every day is speaking to us and constantly

  249. saying, do this, don't do that. That's not a good idea.

  250. That that that they will lead to death.

  251. No, no. But.

  252. But this year, this is life here.

  253. His life. Can you see?

  254. Can you just try? He's directing.

  255. He's putting people in your path.

  256. He's bringing you a part of this community, giving you pictures.

  257. When you read, the word becomes illuminated.

  258. Something jumps out and you go, yes, that talks.

  259. That talks to me and he's that still small voice that said to

  260. Andy, I know Andy, I know what you're thinking.

  261. I know you think that this evening is going to be 1 filled

  262. with music and joy, but it'll lead to death.

  263. I love this poem by Ella Wilcox. It says this one ship drives

  264. east and the other drives W with the self same winds that blow.

  265. It's the set of the sails and not the gales which tells us the

  266. way to go. It's the set of the sails, not

  267. the gales, but tells us the way to go.

  268. It's not what the world throws at us.

  269. It's not the temptation that we will face.

  270. It's not our upbringing. It's not where we were born.

  271. It's how we set our sails. Is it to sin that leads to

  272. death? Or is it to the Holy Spirit that

  273. leads to life and peace and comfort and joy and deliverance?

  274. Lastly, our glorious inheritance, our glorious

  275. future. So even at this point you might

  276. be saying that's all fantastic, thank you, Kai, feeling

  277. encouraged, feeling built up. But you know, that wholesome

  278. example in the beginning that was a little extreme.

  279. It was a little wild, you know, crouching at the door, horror

  280. movie kind of stuff. You know, I'm not like Andy.

  281. I've got things under control, you know?

  282. So I'm going to, I know what I'll do.

  283. I'm going to dabble, you know, a little bit of the flesh and then

  284. a little bit of the Holy Spirit. Actually, you know what I've

  285. thought about it. I'm going to be clever about

  286. this. I am going to use the Holy

  287. Spirit. And this is clever thinking of

  288. people. Listen carefully Now.

  289. I'm going to use the Holy Spirit for the big decisions.

  290. Hey, hey, am I right? Hey, the big ones, like, like,

  291. should I take this new job? Holy Spirit, lead me, guide me.

  292. But, you know, Friday nights, you know, with the guys and

  293. girls at work, that's OK. You know, just to have a few too

  294. many drinks. But Lord, lead me and guide me

  295. at work. Or who am I going to marry?

  296. That's a big one, huh, Lord? Proverbs 31 wife.

  297. One that knits her flax. What and sells it something like

  298. that Lord, that one yes, you know that could be a good

  299. industrious, but you know it's OK to look.

  300. No touch. You can look, but don't touch.

  301. The trouble with dabbling is that you begin to tear pieces

  302. out of your inheritance. I remember sitting in Rory's

  303. office and Sam and I were on the verge of divorce, and he drew

  304. this big circle on the whiteboard.

  305. He said, you know, this is the inheritance that God has given

  306. you and Sam, but you've allowed sin.

  307. You've allowed the enemy to chop large chunks of territory out of

  308. it. And now you wonder why you live

  309. in this constrained, tiny, depressed, hurt, painful land

  310. that you think is living. There's only one difference, one

  311. difference between the unabridged and the abridged

  312. birth certificate. The unabridged birth certificate

  313. contains the details of the Father and His Spirit.

  314. Big S is speaking to my spirit, little S and saying this is my

  315. son, this is my daughter, whom I love with you.

  316. I am well pleased. This is my son, this is my

  317. daughter. And if we are sons and if we are

  318. daughters of the most I, then we are heirs.

  319. And if we are heirs, then we have an inheritance.

  320. And the Holy Spirit inside of us cries out, says ABBA.

  321. Father, that's who you are. I know that I am a son,

  322. therefore I'm no longer. I am no longer a slave to sin.

  323. I am no longer to be controlled by my sinful nature.

  324. I am a son and you've made me an heir and therefore I have this

  325. inheritance. Holy Spirit, lead me, guide me

  326. every single day, Talk to me, whisper to me, put people in my

  327. path that I can walk it out and live in the fullness, in the

  328. life and in the peace that you've called me to.

  329. One ship drives east and the other drives W with the self.

  330. Same winds that blow. It's the set of the sails and

  331. not the gales that tells us which way to go.

  332. Amen.
