  1. Well, good evening through CR. I'm feeling a little bit like

  2. Britney Spears here with I've never, I've never had the

  3. privilege of fishing with one of these marks on, but it's a it's

  4. an incredible privilege. Thank you for the opportunity.

  5. Thank you to the elders, Dad, Steven and the elders.

  6. Thank you for the incredible privilege.

  7. I don't take this lightly. This is a, you know, it's a

  8. very, very holy space for me. So thank you.

  9. We have had the incredible privilege of going through

  10. Romans over the last couple of weeks.

  11. And I don't know about you, but it has probably been one of the

  12. most life changing series of my life.

  13. And the privilege to be a part of it and to see what God is

  14. doing in and through it has been, excuse me, unbelievable as

  15. I've watched young people, specifically in this service,

  16. make decisions for Christ and actually not just hear the

  17. preached word. Take it and thanks for coming.

  18. It was a cool motivational speech actually take it apply to

  19. their heart and live transformed lives and it is an unbelievable

  20. privilege to be a part of that. So I'm excited and we're going

  21. to continue. So we are in Romans 8 verse 14

    Romans 8:14–17

  22. to 17 and I'm going to be talking about sonship tonight

  23. and what it and so the title of my message is living as sons.

  24. I've had the incredible privilege of living under a

  25. father who has had an unbelievable revelation of the

  26. father heart of God. And from that space, it has

  27. created so much space for me to live in the freedom of what it

  28. means to be as a son. And so tonight is not a bunch of

  29. a bunch of steps on how we can be better sons.

  30. It's actually an invitation from God to us that we can walk into

  31. the fullness and inheritance that he has for us as sons.

  32. Is that cool? Amazing.

  33. So Romans 814 to 17 For those who are led by the Spirit of God

  34. are children of God. And the Spirit you received does

  35. not make you slaves, so that you can live in fear again.

  36. Rather the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to

  37. sonship. And by him we cry.

  38. ABBA, Father, the Spirit himself testifies with our Spirit that

  39. we are children of God. Now if we are children, then we

  40. are is is of God and Co is with Christ, if indeed we share in

  41. his sufferings in order in order that we may also share in his

  42. glory. So tonight I hope to make

  43. creative space where you guys can understand what it means to

  44. be children of God, not just in relationship and what not just

  45. in name, but in relationship, inheritance, identity and daily

  46. living and hopefully to break off the spirit of slavery and

  47. fear that grips us. Is that cool Amazing.

  48. So you know that phrase like father, like son.

  49. So say it with me, I'm a son. Say it with conviction one more

  50. time. If you've been around for any

  51. length of time, that is not a new concept that we've had here

  52. at 3 CR. And by no means am I

  53. discrediting the girls. So when I say it, girls and

  54. guys, say it with passion. I'm a son, I'm a son.

  55. Beautiful. What Paul was talking about here

  56. was actually something quite radical back in those times.

  57. The first born son got all the inheritance.

  58. And what Paul is saying is whether you're male or female,

  59. you actually have access to the inheritance that God is that God

  60. is talking about and Paul writes about here.

  61. So I've got 6 Truths of Sonship for to share with you tonight.

  62. We might not get to all of them, so don't don't worry.

  63. I'm not going to talk for too long.

  64. But the first one is No Fear. Then adoption assurance,

  65. inheritance, intimacy, and then suffering or discipline.

  66. The first, the first one is No Fear.

  67. Second adoption assurance, inheritance, intimacy and

  68. discipline. This is the invitation that God

  69. has for us and he welcome invites us into.

  70. But I understand I've said, I've said I've got an incredible

  71. relationship with my father. He has created amazing space.

  72. But I'm very aware that some of you tonight, the, the, the word

  73. father might actually be the very trouble point.

  74. It might actually be the point of contention in your heart

  75. because the word father actually comes along with abuse.

  76. It comes along with alcohol, it comes along with abandonment, it

  77. comes along with violence. And I want tonight hopefully to

  78. paint a picture of a Father in heaven, the perfect Father in

  79. heaven. My dad is not perfect.

  80. He's an incredible man, but he's not perfect.

  81. But I want to show you a picture tonight of a Father in heaven

  82. who loves you, who is gracious, who is kind, who is compassion,

  83. compassionate. He is slow to anger and

  84. abounding in love for his children.

  85. And I believe and I believe if we know who our Father is, we

  86. can walk into the fullness of who he calls us to be as His

  87. children. And in order to take hold of

  88. this series called More than Conquerors, we have to take hold

  89. of our full identity as sons. So the first one, No Fear, who

  90. here struggles with fear in their life probably say 90% of

  91. the room, fear of punishment, fear of the future, fear of

  92. failure, fear of performance, fear of man, fear of security,

  93. the list goes on and on and on. But what Paul writes about here

  94. is he, he is saying that the spirit of sonship, if we can

  95. take hold of that fear, is no longer has a grip over us.

  96. And I'm not, I'm not saying that this is some sort of prosperity

  97. gospel. If you believe in Jesus, all of

  98. a sudden your problems go away. But I am saying that the spirit

  99. of sonship, we get to walk into the freedom that God has fought

  100. for us, that actually fear doesn't have a grip over us.

  101. It doesn't hold us captive over our minds and over our hearts.

  102. We did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear.

  103. Fear is used as a weapon. Fear is the language of slavery.

  104. Love is the language of sonship. Slaves obey from obligation.

  105. Sons obey from love. The spirit of slavery says we

  106. have to earn it. The spirit of adoption says we

  107. receive it. There's nothing that you can do

  108. or say that makes you any less qualified for the love of God.

  109. It is a gift. You receive it.

  110. There's nothing we can do. It is just given to us freely.

  111. And I believe many Christians, myself included, lived as safe

  112. slaves rather than beloved sons. 2 I see it all the time.

  113. I meet with young people and they are whole gripped, gripped

  114. by the the anxiety that the world places upon them.

  115. And I'm throwing out an invitation to you, not to, to

  116. you tonight to show you that there's a Father in heaven that

  117. wants so much more for you. A little bit earlier this this

  118. year, my, my wife and I had the privilege of travelling to

  119. America. And we stayed with a couple

  120. called the Hazels, Greg and Michelle Hazel, and had an

  121. unbelievable time with them. And we went over for a

  122. conference for our kids ministry.

  123. And we just spent about 3 days with them and they just unpacked

  124. their lives and ministry and what God had called them to.

  125. And we met their daughter and the daughter name was Nicole.

  126. And she started to tell us a little bit of her story.

  127. And she's gone through a radical journey where she's experienced

  128. several miscarriages along the way and was gripped by this fear

  129. and this anxiety of actually having children.

  130. They they believed that God had put put a promise on their life

  131. for another child. But she had had about 5 or 6

  132. miscarriages in a row and was gripped by this incredible fear.

  133. And then came a moment. One day she was just sitting in

  134. her devotions and this phrase came out.

  135. Fear is not my future. You are.

  136. Sickness is not my story. You are heartbreak.

  137. Heartbreak is not my home. You are.

  138. And death is not the end. You are.

  139. And three, CR tonight I want to tell you there's a God, a Father

  140. in heaven who loves you so much that he does not want you to

  141. live in this space where fear is your future.

  142. It is not he is. He is our future and our

  143. fullness that we get to walk into.

  144. I don't know, we're joking this morning.

  145. I don't know why, but all of a sudden you get like really bad

  146. cotton mouth. There's a lot of people.

  147. The second point is that we are adopted.

  148. Jr. Packer says this adoption is the

  149. highest privilege of the gospel. The traitor is forgiven, brought

  150. in for supper, given the family name.

  151. To be right with God, the judge is a great thing, but to be

  152. loved and cared for by the Father is even greater.

  153. Where's Dash? Dash, come here.

  154. Bring me a possible This is my friend Dash.

  155. Many of you won't know this man, but I believe he is one of the

  156. heroes of our church. If you've got a kid in kids

  157. ministry, they are blessed because of this man.

  158. This man is an unbelievable gift to this church.

  159. He loves this church. He serves this church with his

  160. whole heart. But Dash has gone on a journey

  161. over the last little while and the reason I'm not, I'm not yet

  162. to embarrass him, but he is. This is one of my closest

  163. friends. Dash has gone on a journey over

  164. the last little while where he hasn't had any identification

  165. documents, none whatsoever, to the point where a few weeks ago

  166. he was declared A stateless being, which besides the fact

  167. that he stood before you, there was 0 proof that he existed.

  168. And through the kindness of this church and some men in this

  169. church, are we some incredible men in this church, they managed

  170. to get him back to Zimbabwe where he got it, he got an ID,

  171. now he's got a passport. We're here.

  172. This is a document that proves he's real.

  173. We were chatting to him today. We asked what it felt like and

  174. he held this thing. He said he held this thing in

  175. his hands. And he actually said, you know

  176. what much this thing is meaningless Yard opens doors and

  177. it gives him an opportunity to travel and I believe to step

  178. into the fullness of what God has for him.

  179. But actually he, he became a son of God way before that.

  180. His identity was so secure and who who Christ had called him to

  181. be as a son that this is an incredible gift, but it doesn't

  182. define him. Thank you.

  183. See, there's two legal terms in that.

  184. In that quote that I just read. The first one is justified and

  185. the second is adopted. So justified means we are

  186. declared righteous and made right in the eyes of God.

  187. Adopted means we are welcomed in and made secure legally.

  188. Adoption is the process that permanently and officially

  189. establishes the child the legal child of the adoptive parents,

  190. terminating the biological parents rights and

  191. responsibilities while transferring them to the

  192. adoptive parents. This grants the adoptive parents

  193. the same rights, responsibilities, and legal

  194. standings as biological parents, meaning that the child is

  195. treated in the law as if they were born to the adopted

  196. parents. We had a friend, friends of ours

  197. down in KZN, the Sanjika family. It was Elliot, Dolly, Grace.

  198. And then they adopted a little boy.

  199. When they walked into Timbalitsu, which was the

  200. orphanage that Glenridge partnered with, they saw this

  201. little boy and they picked him up and his name was Tulani,

  202. which means the quiet one. And they renamed him Elijah,

  203. which means my God is Yahweh. And we watched this little boy

  204. grow up in our in our church. And the reason they called him

  205. Tulani is because there's a thing with, with orphans, when

  206. they cry and they cry and they cry and they cry and they

  207. realize no one's coming. They just go quiet.

  208. So actually, no one knew him. They found him in a dustbin.

  209. They called him Tulani. They adopted him.

  210. And I can tell you that boy, after growing up in a home where

  211. he was fathered so well by Elliot, he was loved as if he

  212. was his own son. They raised that boy.

  213. He was full of joy. He was the personification of

  214. joy and life at his at his memorial.

  215. Unfortunately, he died a few years back at his memorial.

  216. The songs were glorious day praise and I think something

  217. else that was just a wild. It was a celebration because he

  218. that was the kind of life that he lived.

  219. But three CR I want to tell you, when you are adopted, when you

  220. say yes to Christ, your name changes.

  221. No longer you are known as the quiet one.

  222. No longer you're known as the divorcee.

  223. No longer are you known as the pornographic addict.

  224. No longer are you known as the alcoholic.

  225. No longer are you known as the drug addict.

  226. You are known as a son and a daughter of God.

  227. Our name changes because we are adopted.

  228. No longer are we sinners. No longer are we known by our

  229. old name, but our new name as sons and daughters.

  230. Charles Spurgeon says this about adoption observed concerning the

  231. first Advent, that the Lord was moving in it towards man.

  232. When the fullness of time had come, God sent His son.

  233. We moved not towards the Lord, but the Lord towards us.

  234. I do not find in a world in repentance sought after its

  235. maker. No, but the offended God

  236. Himself, in infinite compassion, broke silence and came forth to

  237. bless His enemies. See how spontaneous is the grace

  238. of God? All good things begin with Him.

  239. Adoption is intentional. God chose you, He, God chose you

  240. and I. He moved towards us in His

  241. infinite kindness. We were sinners, we deserved

  242. death, we deserved hope. But God and His kindness moved

  243. towards us and welcomed us into His family.

  244. Can I get those next the photos up please?

  245. How's that little guy? I can tell you the thrifters and

  246. the church would be loving that jersey of my dad's.

  247. My next point is intimacy. You can skip through the next

  248. few photos. There's me and my dad at my

  249. wedding day. One of the highlights of my

  250. life. I had the privilege of my dad

  251. doing my wedding. Rory might be a father figure to

  252. you. I've had the incredible

  253. privilege of having many men speaking to my life.

  254. Men like Clint and Robbie and Damien, guys that have invested

  255. into me, encouraged me, backed me, supported me in the most

  256. incredible ways. But they're not my dad.

  257. I have the privilege of calling Rory my dad.

  258. So as much as he's a father figure to you, he's my dad.

  259. And with that comes an intimacy as we cry out ABBA, Father ABBA

  260. is a very, very personal way of calling out to God.

  261. It's the same as saying dad or Papa.

  262. It's incredibly intimate. But there is a closeness that I

  263. have with this man as my father that when I'm in trouble,

  264. doesn't matter where I am or it doesn't matter what I've done,

  265. the first thing that I do is iPhone.

  266. Him. It's a privilege that I've had

  267. from many, many years. After a little boy that was me

  268. going to watch Sharks rugby. You can put the picture up

  269. again. My dad just bought season

  270. tickets. I was probably 3 years old

  271. there, but he bought season tickets to go watch the Sharks.

  272. My dad and my mom used to do it growing up.

  273. And then I came along and my mom got booted.

  274. Unfortunately for her, sorry mom, but there was a

  275. relationship that was established there.

  276. I couldn't buy the tickets. I couldn't do anything.

  277. That was the father investing in me.

  278. That has got to a point where it was so deep and so close,

  279. established over many, many, many, many years.

  280. There was another photo of me playing rugby at Lofters.

  281. I don't know if it was there, but I was actually the first

  282. dire boy to play rugby at Lofters for no other reason that

  283. I just wanted to like throw it in there.

  284. And I've also got rugby stories. Good old first team for Woody,

  285. old College Chancellor. Absolutely nothing.

  286. This is what the father says and this is not a new concept in our

  287. church. You would have heard it many

  288. times. The three greatest needs of any

  289. man, identity, affection and affirmation.

  290. This is my son whom I love with you.

  291. I'm well pleased. We have access and even if

  292. you've heard it before, I pray that tonight something will

  293. settle in your heart that when the Father looks at you, he is

  294. not an angry God waiting in heaven to hit you with a

  295. lightning bolt every time you step out of line.

  296. He is a Father that says you are my son.

  297. You are my daughter whom I love with you.

  298. I'm so well pleased. This is an incredibly radical

  299. statement. As he says, we have received a

  300. spirit of adoption as sons who we cry ABBA Father.

  301. It's a deeply relational image of God.

  302. So I ask you, do you relate to God as a distant ruler up in the

  303. clouds, or is he a father close with intimacy that is wanting in

  304. a relationship with you? Assurance is the next point.

  305. Sonship is affirmed by the Spirit.

  306. The big S speaks to my little S. The Holy Spirit speaks to my

  307. Spirit moments after the Father had spoken those words over

  308. Jesus. This is my Son whom I love with

  309. you. I'm more pleased.

  310. He heads off into the desert and immediately the devil tries to

  311. sow seeds of doubt. If you are the Son of God, God

  312. has just called him his Son and he's saying, if you are the Son

  313. of God, words that my father spoke over me for my whole life

  314. since I was a little little boy, I'm proud of you, I love you and

  315. I'm special. Does not matter what you say to

  316. me, doesn't matter how hard you try, doesn't matter how hard you

  317. convince me. You'll never change my mind on

  318. those facts. Even if he didn't say it again,

  319. I know that my dad digs me and he backs me and he thinks I'm

  320. freaking great, which is so cool.

  321. And I've had the privilege of living in that, but some of you

  322. haven't. But tonight I want to, I want to

  323. affirm that over you that this Holy Spirit is saying over to

  324. you that he loves you, that he is so proud of you and you're so

  325. special to him. My favorite, my favorite story

  326. in the Bible, story of the prodigal son.

  327. And there's a quote, a quote that I read this this week that

  328. it says the idea of, of sonship is described as the apex of

  329. creation and the goal of redemption.

  330. And the story, the story of the prodigal son, a son comes to his

  331. father and he says, give me my inheritance now.

  332. I'd wish you, I'd rather take it and go spin it now, which is

  333. basically saying, I wish you were dead.

  334. I'm going to go have a good time.

  335. He takes his inheritance and he runs out and he squanders it on

  336. prostitutes, on alcohol and wild living absolutely messes it up

  337. to the point where he ends up in a pig star eating pig's food.

  338. And he comes to this realization, even my father's

  339. slaves live better than this. Surely he can welcome me back as

  340. a slave. And so he does, builds up the

  341. courage and he decides to turn. And it says in scripture, while

  342. he was still a long way off, the father saw him.

  343. And it's this incredible picture and I've many times I've

  344. pictured it like I have the privilege of my wife's parents

  345. are farmers. My in laws are farmers.

  346. And I see these rolling hills and I can just see a father

  347. waiting, pointing while he's still a long way off.

  348. The father sees him and his runs.

  349. He runs to the son. It's the only place in the Bible

  350. where the father runs, the only place, the only time the father

  351. will run when a Sinner comes home.

  352. So the moment you decide enough with this nonsense, enough with

  353. this stuff, maybe my father can accept me.

  354. He sees you and he runs and he meets you in that place.

  355. So you see how the father is so desperate for you to come home.

  356. If you're sitting there and your heart is pounding and you're

  357. saying, oh, but you don't know the stuff that I've done, If my

  358. life had to play up on that screen, I'd want the whole to

  359. open up and swallow me whole. But I know when I made a

  360. decision to follow Christ, I was embraced.

  361. I was wrapped up in the love of the Father as he put a robe

  362. around me, as he put a ring on my finger.

  363. And what that did, the ring was a sign of inheritance.

  364. Actually, He was saying you might have squandered your

  365. inheritance out there, but here it is.

  366. You have access, full access to my inheritance.

  367. Everything that is mine is yours.

  368. We are is with Christ. We have an inheritance.

  369. And I can tell you that the Spirit speaks to our Spirit and

  370. it says you belong. Assurance comes from my comes

  371. from the identity of the Spirit, not our feelings or our

  372. performance. Satan will attack this very,

  373. very truth. If you're sons of God, if you

  374. are daughters of God. That leads me to my next point.

  375. Inheritance. If children then is is of God

  376. and filler is with Christ. I have the privilege of being

  377. married to this beautiful lady Tyler Page and we coming up on

  378. two years which is amazing. But when we started dating I

  379. phoned home and I said hey mom and dad, I think I've met my

  380. wife and they were very excited and was amazing and my mom said

  381. that's awesome boy, what do they do?

  382. I said no, her family are farmers down the South Coast and

  383. she was like oh that's so cool. Please send us a photo of what

  384. she looks like. And my dad replied and he was

  385. like, that's awesome boy. Send me a picture of the land

  386. and how big it is. Hey Lecha, it's a fifth

  387. generation Langton Fong and Paul Langton had just girls, which

  388. means after 5 generations it's going to turn into a dire farm

  389. which I'll start show on. It ends up getting the dire

  390. name. The jokes aside, when I walk

  391. onto a piece of prophecy down in the Free States or a farm down

  392. the South Coast, not because of anything I've done but just

  393. because of who I am, I find favor in the eyes of the people

  394. there. We don't just get blessings, we

  395. get God Himself. We are heirs of God.

  396. Jesus shares His inheritance with us.

  397. How insane is that? Inheritance is not just a future

  398. that's promised in heaven. We have access to it now in the

  399. peace and the joy and the hope that is promised to us.

  400. That is the stuff we get to walk into her sons and sons and

  401. daughters of God. John 14 verse 6 says this.

    John 14:6

  402. Jesus answered, I am the way, the truth and the life.

  403. No one comes to the Father except through me.

  404. By putting our faith in Jesus, we have access to the King of

  405. Kings and the Lord of Lords as our Father.

  406. I love that phrase, the scandal of grace.

  407. It's a scandal. We didn't deserve it.

  408. There's nothing that you and I could have done to deserve it.

  409. We've all fallen short. I love that picture of the arrow

  410. that my dad did a few preach a while ago, actually picking up

  411. the arrow and putting it in the bullseye.

  412. There's nothing we can do besides believe in Jesus.

  413. When we believe in Jesus, we have access to our Father in

  414. heaven. My final point, suffering and

  415. discipline, not the one that people want to hear.

  416. Hebrews 12 says this. My son, do not make lots of the

  417. Lord's discipline and do not lose his heart when he rebukes

  418. you, because the Lord disciplines the ones he loves

  419. and he chastens everyone. He accepts his son.

  420. We endure God's discipline as sons, not as slaves.

  421. Believe it or not, I didn't get the most smacks in my family the

  422. way I grew up and I've got, I've got quite a tender heart.

  423. And so when when my parents said to me, boy, we disappointed, I

  424. was wrecked. I was absolutely finished.

  425. I'd go sit in my room, I'd look out my window.

  426. It'd feel like rain was falling. I just have a real pity party

  427. because I've disappointed my parents.

  428. I can't say the same about my sister.

  429. Same home, same mom, same dad, different children.

  430. When my parents said NASA disappointed, she'd be like, why

  431. it was that NASA? Because you've done something

  432. wrong. And she's like, where's your

  433. proof? She'd be getting a smack and

  434. like tears would be coming out of Oz.

  435. And she'd turn around and be like, that's my soul.

  436. It's an unbelievable thing. But my parents have to

  437. discipline her differently. My sister is an unbelievable

  438. woman. It has raised the way my parents

  439. have raised her, has raised something incredible.

  440. I believe she could be present if she wanted to be.

  441. There's nothing she couldn't do just because she'll tell you she

  442. can do it. But it's raised an incredible

  443. young woman and my sister. But I remember when my parents

  444. were disciplining us, when my dad was disciplining me, These

  445. are the things he said. Discipline is not based on our

  446. current behavior. It's always based on our future

  447. calling. So the beautiful thing about

  448. having an interfering father is actually, he loved me so much to

  449. get involved in my stuff, to get involved in my behavior.

  450. I always knew I was loved. I always knew that there was a

  451. reason and there was a purpose for it.

  452. So 3 CR when when the father disciplines you, don't endure it

  453. as slaves, endure it as sons. He's not disciplining you now

  454. because of your current behavior.

  455. He's disciplining you because there's so much more that he has

  456. for you. There's a future and a calling

  457. that he has over your life. I believe over every single

  458. person's life, he has called you for specific reasons.

  459. And some of you are not walking in the fullness of that.

  460. And sometimes the father's going to get you and you're going to

  461. catch a little hiding. That's OK Pull yourself into

  462. community. Walk it through in community.

  463. It's good for you. Suffering doesn't disprove our

  464. sonship. It proves it.

  465. As sons and daughters, we follow Jesus both in suffering and in

  466. glory. Do not make do not let hardship

  467. doubt your identity, and do not let hardship become your

  468. identity. I've seen lots of people, they

  469. live in a season and it becomes their story and it becomes their

  470. entire personality. This hardship that you live

  471. under, the father is saying over you tonight that there is a

  472. fullness, a free full plan over your life.

  473. You need to actually break off that spirit of slavery, break

  474. off that spirit of shame and walk into the fullness of it.

  475. So hopefully tonight is not a it's not a list of where we're

  476. falling short. I can go through this thing.

  477. There's times where I miss this often I've had the most

  478. unbelievable dad and from that space, I've had an incredible

  479. understanding of who the Father is in heaven, but I still miss

  480. it. But tonight is an invitation for

  481. us 3 CR And I believe there's so much more that we can walk into.

  482. If you can understand who God has created you to be as sons,

  483. we can walk into the fullness. And I fully believe that we can

  484. change this world. Inside this room, there are

  485. people that can actually, they've got the whether they're

  486. engineers, whether they're doctors, whether they're

  487. businessmen, whether they're lawyers.

  488. I fully believe that this world can be turned on its head

  489. because of the people in this room.

  490. If we can walk into the fullness of our identity as sons of God,

  491. is that cool? Amen.

  492. Amen.
