  1. Perry, just so you know, it's Ruth, not Ruth.

  2. Two very different things. Good morning.

  3. Turn to the book of Ruth. As we saw in our new series,

  4. while you're turning there, just a bit of a disclaimer, not so

  5. much a sermon today. I don't think what I want to do

  6. would best be described as preaching, but more of painting

  7. a picture. I want to show you what and why

  8. the book of Ruth was written or what what God is after in our

  9. hearts, I believe as we go through the series.

  10. So just so you know, that's that's kind of the angle we're

  11. going to take today. A little bit different than

  12. usual. But if you haven't found it yet,

  13. it's an Old Testament. I know we're going to need it

  14. tonight with the students, but it's you have Joshua, Judges,

  15. Ruth and then one and two Samuel.

  16. Actually, there's a whole bunch of 1 and twos coming after that.

  17. So if you're still looking for it, I'll say they're not to be

  18. facetious. I'll say it because as part of

  19. the picture I want you to see today, there's actually their

  20. strategy and there's a picture being painted even in where Ruth

  21. fits into the biblical narrative.

  22. So on one side you've got Judges, then you've got Ruth and

  23. then you've got one and two Samuel.

  24. And we're going to basically be looking at this picture.

  25. Firstly, if you are in Ruth, if you turn back one page, the very

  26. last line of Judges, Judges 2125, says in those days Israel

  27. had no king and everyone did as they saw fit.

  28. This is where the story comes. Israel has no king and everyone

  29. did as they saw fit. It's a Hebrew word, Yashar.

  30. It's kind of like Disney nemesis, you know, you've got to

  31. say it with a Yashar. To Yashar means pretty much you

  32. do as you please, you do as you feel fit, or you do whatever's

  33. convenient, or you do you. So that's where we find the book

  34. of Ruth, and we're going to take a look at some of the

  35. consequences of Yashar when we live in this space.

  36. But on the other side, just past Ruth, we've got one and Two

  37. Samuel, because it's believed that Samuel actually wrote this

  38. account, went through the books, the historical books, and found

  39. the story and penned the book of Ruth.

  40. Samuel stands as his prophets and he's declaring over Yashad.

  41. The king is in the room. The king is coming, see, because

  42. on this side where there is no king, there's no Kingdom come.

  43. But over here, he says the king, he comes as a Redeemer to

  44. rescue, restore and redeem. It's a beautiful picture.

  45. And we're going to just take a look at those two this morning,

  46. kind of the bookends of the Book of Ruth.

  47. So just touching on Ruth chapter 1 and verse one, it says the

    Ruth 1 chapter mention

  48. following. So it's in the days when the

  49. judges ruled there was a famine in the land.

  50. So a man from Bethlehem and Judah, together with his wife

  51. and two sons, went to live for a while in the country of Moab.

  52. I just want to touch on that because there's a lot in there.

  53. I want to actually pick the bones of this because Samuel,

  54. who wrote it, assumes that, you know, the historical context and

  55. the backdrop to every word that he uses in one verse one.

  56. But I just want to pick out a few things there because

  57. essentially he starts, he says, in the days when the judges

  58. ruled, in other words, in the time of Yashar, you just do

  59. whatever feels good to you, whatever is convenient.

  60. You do you. At that time there was a famine

  61. in the land. So a man from Bethlehem and

  62. Judah, we find his name in the next verse.

  63. He's eliminate. He's actually a descendant of

  64. one of the Princess of Judah. Even the best of the best, he's

  65. he's known as a wealthy, well established, high reputation

  66. man. Even them how the mighty fall

  67. when he goes by Yashar, his own wisdom, his own ways and he

  68. decides to do the worst thing possible and that's he heads off

  69. to Moab. Now we don't know much about

  70. Moab, but we do find a lot in scripture about it.

  71. So if we rewind a little bit, I want to tell you a little bit

  72. about what this guy decided to do, who he decided to surround

  73. himself with what the fruit of Yashar looks like.

  74. It looks like Moab. So if we rewind a bit, Moab, you

  75. should know the name Abraham Lot.

  76. So these two guys, Abraham was the uncle of Lots and they were

  77. journeying together. Lot had a whole lot of Yashar

  78. going on in his heart because he eventually ends up in Sodom and

  79. Gomorrah. You might have heard that story,

  80. which ends up with God sending fire down and destroying the

  81. wickedness of Sodom and Gomorrah.

  82. Him and his two daughters flee to the mountains, and it seems

  83. like his daughters thought they were the only ones left alive

  84. because they had to plan some more Yashar.

  85. They caught the Yashara of their father because what they decide

  86. to do was get their dad pregnant and bear children by him because

  87. it seems to them like there's no other man and how they're going

  88. to keep the lineage going. So as much as Abraham and lots

  89. from the same descended, you know, sort of the extended

  90. family that couldn't be further apart.

  91. On the one side you've got Abraham, who is the father of

  92. Israel, that the child of promise.

  93. On this side, you've got a lot. He's the father of Moab, the

  94. child of perversion. And then comes the Book of Ruth,

  95. and we get told about a God who will wade into the most

  96. perverse, deborced, broken fruits of your and my Yashad and

  97. bring it back to redemption. Because the king is in the room.

  98. They're also known as being proud and independent.

  99. So they had their own kings, they had their own armies, they

  100. had their own worship ceremonies and their own gods.

  101. Doesn't sound familiar to you unless I say we have our own

  102. genders, our own marriage parameters, our own permissions

  103. when it comes to sex. See what the Bible says about a

  104. Moab mindset is there is a way that seems right to man, but

  105. it's end is the way of death. And that is the end when it

  106. comes to Moab. Not only for eliminate but for

  107. the Moabites. So at their highest of hearts,

  108. they worship their God with child sacrifice.

  109. That should be a stench to us, right?

  110. It should have been a stench to eliminate.

  111. But still he takes his entire family there to have children,

  112. grandchildren there. Now, we don't have youth child

  113. sacrifice or do we? When I was leading youth, my

  114. wife and I had the privilege of leading youth in three CR many,

  115. many years ago. And I remember one story I

  116. remember hearing about one of the guys, I think it was in

  117. grade 10 or 11 at the stage and his parents both got happened to

  118. get promotions. They were working in, in Joburg.

  119. They both got promotions and it demanded more of them as

  120. businessmen and women. So they hatched a plan, Yashar,

  121. they decided they're going to hire, rent themselves out a

  122. little flat in Joburg. And then they'll come back on

  123. weekends to be with their children.

  124. But during the week they're going to be there.

  125. But of course, you know, it's never just week.

  126. It becomes weekends, it becomes public holidays.

  127. And he ended up living on his own in a home with a credit

  128. card. Talk about child sacrifice.

  129. You know what that guy got up to the, you know, the mess and the

  130. stuff that we had to draw out and care for and counsel.

  131. I don't know if you know this. I discovered this yesterday.

  132. I was on my back listening to a podcast.

  133. I heard that apparently, according to recent statistics,

  134. I don't know if you know, Australia has banned social

  135. media for children under the age of 16.

  136. You know where it comes from. It comes from a study that was

  137. done where they found that if parents, if you give your child

  138. a smart device, a cell phone or a tablet or something from the

  139. age of five to look up, you know, to entertain themselves.

  140. Why? Because, well, it's convenient.

  141. Yes, you are. If they get given a smart device

  142. at the age of 5, by the age of 20 there is a 50% chance that

  143. they will have suicidal ideation for the rest of their lives.

  144. The fruits of Yashar. Ah, yeah, but you don't

  145. understand the high pressure. OK, but the king is in the room

  146. and Ruth points us to one that comes to rescue and redeem and

  147. intercept and maybe bring you to church on a Sunday so you can

  148. hear the statistic and take that out of your little kids hand,

  149. give it back to them when they can buy their own relentless

  150. military conflict. This was another one of the

  151. things, one of the things that they were well known for

  152. actually, the quotas. They had a willingness to resort

  153. to extreme measures. The Moabites.

  154. It was sort of you guys are the bad guys.

  155. The Moabites, Yeah, they had a willingness to resort to any

  156. measure, sort of guerrilla warfare, kind of think Middle

  157. East today. That was the Moabites then.

  158. And the lemon left decides, no, that's a great place to take my

  159. family. I mean, we are talking fear,

  160. oppression, opposition, No growth, no fruitfulness,

  161. Baroness. Everything gets destroyed.

  162. Have you, have you seen the photos, the results of the

  163. oppression of the Hamas? Have you seen the aerial photos

  164. of the decimation? Think Moabites.

  165. That's where it leads his family.

  166. Maybe. Maybe you look at your life,

  167. some of the decisions you made, the fruit of some of the

  168. decisions you made. Maybe it looks like that.

  169. Today I have the privilege of introducing you to someone who

  170. walks in midst the ruins and brings restoration and

  171. redemption. They're also known as being a

  172. seductive and corrupting people. We're going to going to have

  173. some good news just now, but for now, seductive and corrupting.

  174. I won't say much except that houses for a question will

  175. always take you further than you wanted to go, keep you longer

  176. than you wanted to stay, and demand more from you than you

  177. wanted to pay. Sin will always take you further

  178. than you wanted to go, keep you longer than you wanted to stay,

  179. and demand more from you than you wanted to pay.

  180. Elimelech paid with his life and his sons lives, but that line

  181. there says keep you longer than you wanted to stay in.

  182. My Bible says that in verse 2, it says that Elimelech went for

  183. a while. They stayed in Moab for a while.

  184. Some say they sojourned there. I went to look.

  185. I'm like, what is it? Yeah.

  186. What? What does it mean to to sojourn

  187. or to spend a little while in Moab?

  188. And it says Hebrew word translated into English simply

  189. means abide. He decided to abide in Moab.

  190. I don't know if you've heard that word before in a biblical

  191. context. John 15 abide in me, and I in

  192. you see, that's what Yashar does, our earthly wisdom, where

  193. there is no king, there's no Kingdom come.

  194. You do you, and this is the fruit.

  195. Why on earth would he do this, knowing all of that?

  196. And he did. Plus he had all the counsel and

  197. godly wisdom, and he had the elders of Bethlehem that could

  198. have said, but what are you doing?

  199. I see you packing where you're going.

  200. Why would he do this one word? In the days when the judges

  201. ruled, this is Ruth 11, there was a famine.

  202. Famine exposes the Yashar in our hearts.

  203. So you got famine in business. You do a little bit of a Yashad.

  204. This seems like a great idea. He seems quite successful and

  205. I'll bring him on board as a partner.

  206. And he single handedly has decimated your business.

  207. There's famine in your business and you think, well, that's a

  208. great brand. I want to associate myself with

  209. that brand. And you give them some equity

  210. and you dilute your company that you spent decades working on.

  211. Famine. Well, you got famine in your

  212. personal life, relationships, Single Ladies.

  213. And he looks OK You're getting a little old.

  214. And so you, you're Shar. And you're sitting there in the

  215. car, clap a cop, you know, overlooking the city.

  216. And his hand starts going a little higher above the knee

  217. than than you used to. And he says, baby, we were meant

  218. to be together. Now you have a baby and you're

  219. still not together. Famine You're Shar Moab.

  220. Maybe in your marriage. Famine, you know, she likes me,

  221. but I don't know if she loves me.

  222. And so now you have a work girlfriend or boyfriend.

  223. Is there's a way that seems good to a man, but it's end is death,

  224. even in ministry. And I put this here because I

  225. really genuinely believe someone needs to hear this.

  226. Even in ministry, Famine in ministry.

  227. You called, or maybe you were in ministry and then there's a

  228. famine and it just seems like there's no fruit.

  229. And so you decide, well, this is a great partnership, but you

  230. find that actually you're not walking a road with a brother,

  231. you're walking a road with a cousin.

  232. And a cousin here is a Moabite offspring.

  233. And then there's further famine. Carry the shirt, his shadows and

  234. burdens of guilt. So this, this is this is what's

  235. happening on this side. This is where we begin.

  236. This is where the story actually takes root.

  237. So Samuel, all these years later, is sitting on this side

  238. and going like, OK, there's a fruitfulness here.

  239. How did that start? And he leans over into the time

  240. of judges, and he finds a story. And he brings us the story.

  241. Born in a place of famine. Maybe you're in famine, you

  242. know, if you are. I mean, there's genuinely,

  243. there's no judgment. There's kind of the more I

  244. looked in Scripture, the more I found like, that is the way of

  245. man. We just run off the famine.

  246. I mean, take a look at this Genesis, Abraham, Tom of famine,

  247. where does he go? Egypt.

  248. Here's a son, Isaac, Tom of famine, where does he go?

  249. The Philistines. I mean, neither of these are

  250. good friends of the Israelite people.

  251. Elimelech, Tama famine, where does he go?

  252. Moab and then second Samuel 21 Tama famine.

  253. But David sought the face of the Lord.

  254. It's such a small difference. On the one side, it's Yashar, my

  255. wisdom, my ways, whatever is convenient, even if I'm taking

  256. shortcuts on this side. In that famine, I run to the

  257. Redeemer and the rest, as they say, is history.

  258. And what's amazing is on this side is this picture that gets

  259. painted is of something that we're unfamiliar with, but it's

  260. like it's called a kinsman Redeemer.

  261. I want to tell you just a little bit about that.

  262. So a kinsman Redeemer was ordained by by God.

  263. He put it in Scripture so that his people would represent him

  264. as a kinsman Redeemer. It was meant to be a

  265. foreshadowing of Jesus who comes further on through the

  266. narrative, but a powerful foreshadowing of the redemptive

  267. work that Jesus does in our lives.

  268. So I don't know what translation of the Bible you're reading in.

  269. Sometimes it says kinsman Redeemer, which is a funny word

  270. or or a guardian Redeemer. My favorite is covenant Redeemer

  271. because that's really is what it's about.

  272. But it's it's kind of like a redundant because to redeem

  273. means to you're obligated to fulfill promises and covenants.

  274. So it's kind of like you're saying on this side, what we

  275. come up against or the reason why we found in spite of the

  276. famine, the reason why we found a fruitfulness.

  277. Well, someone came on the scene who was a covenant Redeemer, a

  278. covenant covenanter. And it's a funny word to see how

  279. they're trying to translate it because it's like they're trying

  280. to stuff into this single word so much of who God is as a

  281. Redeemer because essentially he's saying, you will be my

  282. representative. You'll be a very foreshadow of

  283. Jesus who's coming. So they they stuffing in the

  284. fact that he's going to rescue, he's going to redeem, but he's

  285. not only going to make a covenant, he's going to keep the

  286. covenant on your behalf. And there is so much power in

  287. this single person, earthy human bleeds when he's got so much

  288. power in a kinsman Redeemer in biblical history that that say

  289. because of this, and this is a human foreshadowing the heavenly

  290. Father so much power in it. They say there's the single

  291. reason why the Babylonian Empire came and went, the Persian

  292. Empire came and went, the Greco Roman Empire came and went.

  293. But the people of Israel weathered those storms because

  294. in and amongst them we're wandering these kinsmen

  295. redeemers. You know, you might be thinking

  296. my marriage is going to come and go.

  297. My business seems to be my children come up.

  298. There's no hope. I don't see how.

  299. The only hope we have is that there's a kinsman Redeemer

  300. wandering in our midst. And the beautiful thing is, the

  301. last thing I want to say about this guy is that he was

  302. obligated to redeem to the uttermost.

  303. I don't know. If you remember in Romans

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  304. chapter 8, we discovered Jesus who says I've come that you

  305. might have life and life to the full Zoe life.

  306. And that Zoe, life means nothing missing, nothing broken,

  307. redeemed to the uttermost. So it doesn't matter how

  308. blistered and broken the fruit of your Yashar has produced,

  309. there is one who says journey with me through the story and I

  310. will redeem to the uttermost. Now that's wonderful when the

  311. pastor says that. But what does your past say

  312. about that? Yeah, that's all.

  313. That's great. Yeah, I know.

  314. Lovely. You and your your pastor's wife,

  315. you know, bless you. But me, I have the marks to show

  316. for my past. I'm living in ruins.

  317. Could he even redeem me? I'll answer that question with a

  318. story I heard the ghost of a shadow of a whisper of a

  319. redemption story that I thought, like, that's too good to be

  320. true. So I asked someone if I could

  321. sit with them and find out for myself, you know, because I'm

  322. incredibly faith and, you know, positive as a person.

  323. I put my cynical investigative journalism to work.

  324. And I sat them down. I was, I want to hear the story

  325. you tell me. And what I heard was astounding.

  326. So this couple did coffee this week.

  327. Been together for 21 years and they start telling me this

  328. story, they said but the last few years and here are the words

  329. that they used in the last few years.

  330. We got distracted, career driven, selfish, independence of

  331. one another. And while they're talking, I'm

  332. thinking I've genuinely got goosebumps.

  333. I'm like, that's the language of Moab.

  334. And then they said eventually we just became too busy for church.

  335. And she said this was our undoing.

  336. We ended up. With deep emptiness that this is

  337. the result of Yassar, the fruit of Yassar.

  338. It's an emptiness depression. And eventually last year they

  339. got divorced. So she moves us going to pursue

  340. making money, owning it as a businesswoman.

  341. He stays put with his own home, own life.

  342. Off we go. Thank you very much.

  343. Moab famine. Except there was 1 complication,

  344. one little problem. They thought maybe a problem.

  345. You would think maybe a problem. All part of God's plan.

  346. They'd had a child together. And I don't know what the

  347. paperwork is, I didn't ask. But I could imagine when the

  348. lawyers were sitting and writing it out, you know, it's like, OK,

  349. on these weekends you and on these weekends you, and then

  350. you've got to drive across and drop off and take to school.

  351. And so they just figured, you know, with all this mess, the

  352. easiest way to handle all of these particulars is we just

  353. come to church together. And so they did.

  354. They'd come daughter and toe. And they said during the week,

  355. it's like lawyers letters hating on each other, right?

  356. And then they come on a Sunday and they sit lifting holy hands.

  357. You see, because I don't know if you know this, but when you walk

  358. into the building our steps on straight, we got crooked steps

  359. because you are welcome to come in all your crooked Moabites

  360. wisdom here. God will straighten, rescue,

  361. restore and redeem. Not at home.

  362. That was key. So they started coming into

  363. church every single Sunday because they needed to do this

  364. whole transfer whatever thing every Sunday set on the word

  365. every Sunday. And then he discovered and

  366. trying to get rid of all evidence that they ever lived

  367. together. He discovered a primary school

  368. Bible and I don't know how, but it seems to have taken a photo

  369. and sent it to her. Like, do you want this or can I

  370. burn it? And she responded like, this is

  371. private and it's personal. And he's like, I've got a

  372. response. So he took another photo and

  373. sent it. And then he decided actually I'm

  374. going to find a verse because what she would do is she would

  375. write, this is a primary school Bible, right?

  376. What God was saying next to that verse.

  377. And so he would send it to her. Started as a dig, but she says,

  378. I kid you not, it's like God came into this man's heart and

  379. changed him and he just started walking the walk and that's when

  380. my heart began to soften, She says he was walking the walk,

  381. but the Redeemer was in the room.

  382. You won't believe what happened next.

  383. They started having Bible study together.

  384. Now that's crazy, but just wait, there's more.

  385. They weren't living together, so they would make a cup of coffee,

  386. video call and have a Bible study together every morning.

  387. But there's more that did that at 4 AMI know, right?

  388. I'm not. You don't have to tell me.

  389. That's like, I don't think I've ever had a quiet time with my

  390. wife, he said. We've been together 21 years

  391. now. We've never done that in our

  392. whole entire relationship. I said 4:00 AM.

  393. But have you lost your mind? He said.

  394. This, I don't know, I just felt God needed me on my knees.

  395. Carriers in Moab, God gets him on his knees.

  396. Then Fast forward a few weeks, months, we start our series on

  397. Ecclesiastes and there's one that we preached on God's time

  398. and place, that God's purposes unfold at the intersection of

  399. his time and place. I don't know if we can get it on

  400. camera, but there was 1 cross in front of our sound desk.

  401. We had crosses all over the place.

  402. But at the end of the service, she had gone out because she was

  403. like cunning me, any corporal. She was chatting to a friend,

  404. she says, actually putting on sunglasses, trying to hide the

  405. tears. And she said I want out.

  406. And her friend said to her, there is such a thing as

  407. redemption. And a few minutes later, her ex

  408. came around, grabbed her by the hand and said, come, we're doing

  409. this. Walked her back.

  410. And then they stood on that cross and all this hit was rude.

  411. We're in Moab properly. But if you can walk into the

  412. room, if you can redeem, would you do that?

  413. Fast forward a little bit. Lots of pray, lots of patience,

  414. lots of coffee dates, lots of discussions.

  415. And on the 23rd of August 2025, she moved back in.

  416. And then the first day home, he proposed and she said yes, but

  417. there's more, there's more. Wait, wait, wait.

  418. You know how he proposed? Having quiet time.

  419. So this is where redemption started.

  420. This is where redemption will continue.

  421. He said, will you be my wife again?

  422. And she said yes, but here's more.

  423. They're here today. Can the engaged couples stand

  424. for us? But there's more.

  425. Remember I said I just wanted to present a picture of what Ruth

  426. is all about. You know, she gets married in

  427. the end. So I'm going to ask the engaged

  428. couple to make their way down to the cross and we're going to let

  429. them get married. Can I ask that you stay

  430. standing? Can we honor what God is doing

  431. in the picture that He wants to present during the series by

  432. just remaining standing for this moment?

  433. We'll have it on camera so you'll be able to see Eugene

  434. over to you. Thank you for allowing us into

  435. your story. It's absolutely, absolutely mind

  436. blowing. So, Viand Mikaela, it's our

  437. privilege to lead you into the vows, and this is holy ground.

  438. I want you to know many, many, many, many, many marriages I

  439. touched here this morning because of your obedience.

  440. Thank you. So would you face one another?

  441. Please To you, Vian Albert from Vaik, declare that as far as you

  442. know, there's no lawful impediment to your proposed

  443. marriage to Michaela von Vaik here present, and that you call

  444. all of us to witness that you take her as your only lawful

  445. wife. What is your answer?

  446. I do, yes. Do you, Michaela von Vaik,

  447. declare that as far as you know, there's no lawful impediment to

  448. your proposed marriage to Vian Albert from Vaikya present, and

  450. him as your only lawful husband? What is your answer?

  455. live? What is your answer?

  456. Yes, Michaela. Will you take Fian to be your

  457. husband? Do you promise that you will

  498. Wow and. Now it gives me the remarkable

  499. privilege to declare that Vien, Albert von Weich and Michaela

  500. von Weich, here present, have been lawfully married.

  501. You may kiss your bride. Why do you stretch on your hands

  502. as we pray blessing over them? So, Father, may you bless them,

  503. May you keep them. May you make your face shine

  504. upon them, May you turn your face towards them.
